valentin doesn’t remember how they got here, his mind too lost in the fog of too much vodka and the heady warmth of the bar’s dim, golden light. one moment, he’d been laughing with spencer, the next, they're stumbling down a quiet, empty street, his arm firmly around her shoulders, steadying her as the ground seemed to tilt beneath her feet. the male feels every unsteady step like a jolt through his own body, his arm tightening around her instinctively, as if he could anchor her to him, to this moment. his pulse drums beneath his skin, though he masks it with a low, amused rumble. “you’re drunk,” he murmured, his lips close to her ear, and he swears he can feel her shiver at the sound. “and you said you could keep up with me.” his words hang in the air for little less than a second before she starts protesting, words tumbling out too quickly, betraying her inebriation. but the way she’s leaning into him, her weight pressed against his side, says otherwise. she trips over her own feet, and valentin is there, he's always there, catching her, pulling her closer. for a moment, she’s so close he can feel her breath against his neck, warm and quick. his french cologne lingers in the air between them — smoky cedarwood and something else. he feels her cling to him, her slender digits curling into his shirt, and his large palm slides to her waist, his own digits warm against the thin fabric of her dress. he knows he shouldn’t enjoy this as much as he does. “sure you can,” he commented softly, his lips quirking into a familiar, knowing smile. for years, they’ve danced around this — whatever this is. friends, sure, but there’s always been something else simmering beneath the surface. a touch too long. a look held just a moment too intimately. something neither of them has ever had the courage to name, too afraid of what might happen if they did. the male feels his heart pounding against his ribs, his thoughts swirling just as much as the liquor running steadily in his veins. he’s wanted to say something for a while now, but he’s always stopped himself. now, with her leaning into him, her long dark cascade of hair brushing against his cheek and her brown hues a little unfocused but still so full of that familiar spark, he wonders if maybe tonight is the night. “ i think i'm in love with you, you know, ” the male confessed, his voice soft, almost drowned by the night. “ i feel like you see me in a way no one else does, it's like everyone looks at me and just sees the fame, this whole … persona i've built around myself, ” he pauses, hazy blues glancing down to meet her familiar gaze. “ but you, you see me. ” as the words escape his lips, his heart is a wild, unsteady thing in his chest. he feels caught in that suspended moment where everything hangs in the balance, where he could either laugh it off or lean in and kiss her like he’s wanted to for years. and for a moment, the brunette glanced back at him, her eyes wide, probably searching his features for any hint of the joke she half-expected this to be. “ you won't remember this in the morning,” he finds himself commenting with a faint chuckle as he shakes his head. “ and if you do, pretend you don't. ”
