I just had to leave a HP advertising server because my site allows "problematic" content like letting people play minor characters, and narratives including racism, sexism, transphobia and homophobia (probably others, but I left so fast I didn't get a good look).

Now, the main reason people don't like minor characters in RP is a really stupid anti-shipping argument, and it deserves a post all of its own, so I'm going to gloss over it for the moment. Suffice to say that I think if you're creating a server for sites based on children's media, disallowing child characters is a bad move.

However, I also think that if you're setting up an advertising directory for a series that we all agree is steeped in bigotry, it's a bad idea to blanket ban sites that allow people to roleplay the bigotry that is already present in the series.

It's also not problematic to depict things that exist in real life in fiction.

In fact, the original meaning of the word problematic in a social justice context was to acknowledge institutional bias without laying blame on individuals. And I want to say that it's more problematic in that sense to try to erase all narratives involving bigotry from a site because what happens when you do that is your narratives that are supposed to be morally pure will show up your biases. Glaringly.

This has happened to me on every site I've been on that had a rule like that, and it happens because nobody is unproblematic. It's an impossible standard.

At least if you are allowed to RP characters who have flaws, you can portray those flaws consciously and with sensitivity.

He needed to talk the soldier talk, and he does: complimenting his fellow soldiers' dominations of their vessels and "keeping them" all these years.

Yikes, I'm not sure he'd engage in that kind of "angel bro talk" with Sam and Dean present. It's like they're talking about their cars.

Cas is here with one goal in mind, to get intel. He resolves to be cool-headed.

And Cas resolves to put up with it. For the sake of strategy and intel.

But then Dean charges in, and this is the face of an angel "losing face" and alllllll his negotiation power:

Sam and Dean have unwittingly taken away his ability for locker-room talk.

And then, things go to Hell. Ishim gets mad.

With a lap-full of Dean, Cas tries to salvage what little trust he had: "I only brought Sam and Dean."

And Dean, in Ishim's eyes, starts "mouthing off" and "getting cute." He hates it.

(I think Ishim reads them, and he's jealous about it, to be honest. Cas was everything Ishim wanted to be as a soldier, and Cas's humans truly love him.)

And Ishim continues his insults, which has the effect of successfully drawing Dean AND Sam into an argument as they defend Cas.

Cas tries to give Sam a BIG hint.

And then... Cas loses the discussion. Ishim closes up and decides NOT to play ball. Ishim redirects, "I have a safe house nearby."

This is a face of, "fuck you guys. Look what you did. You've made him shut down AND he's demanding I move the conversation to a 'safe place.'"

And a safe place like that is safer for ISHIM but not for Cas. It's not the outcome Cas wanted. He wanted to get to the meat of things: intel.

And he wanted to do it in a public place with backup.

Now that I look, I think... I think yes, he's certainly touched to have their support, but in the moment, his annoyance is winning out.

This has the vibes of, "Don't make things needlessly complicated, as you humans tend to do."

And Ishim wipes the floor with them.

This and what happens with Ramiel in Stuck in the Middle with You are two of Cas's worst moments. I think they're huge parts of what triggers his lone wolfism at the end of this season.

hi, love! i’m write fics and i’m white and i try to leave things out of my fics like readers cheeks being red or running fingers through her hair, things like that, i was just curious if you had any tips on what else i could to do make my writing as inclusive as possible and avoid anything that’s white-coded

one thing i try to do is mention the head a lot or open action. i have my moments of slip ups to, my fics aren't white coded but i mention fingers through hair sometimes (because for me it was possible, just painful as heck cause he was ripping through my curls when his fingers got stuck in my fuzzball and now it's possible due to my hairstyle but i have to watch myself there) and to mitigate that, i mention playing with hair, cupping the back of your head, stroking your hair─because this doesn't imply the hair is a certain texture─and you can follow that one up with reader shaking their hair out to keep it from being flat and smashed down, because now we're including readers with thick hair, braids, locs, pixie cuts, wolf cuts, pretty manes of curls, beautiful 'fros, etc.

when you wanna maybe imagine your reader with an updo, imply the reader's hair is just out of their face and out of the way. that can just mean they've put it back, be it in a ponytail, slicked back, with a bandana, etc. but my trick is to not be descriptive. i once tried that with an outfit while writing a fic and one of my friends proofing it for me said they liked to imagine the outfit themselves and i realized i didnt need to go super into depth about my reader's physical appearance because their imagination was gonna do alllllll the reader inserting, i just had to make sure to not include any major descriptors which snap them out of it. so i stopped being super descriptive regarding appearance.

yes, saying "Your long hair had enough tangles in it to resemble a well put together rat's nest", is more Shakespearean─per say─but if you say "Your hair was a complete and utter wreck you'd have to spend an entire episode of Games of Thrones to fix to your satisfaction" you don't state the texture or length of the hair but you imply it's bad enough to take a while to maintain and trust me─your readers are gonna imagine their worst nightmare all on their own and what they want the outcome to be.

i focused more on the reader's actions and emotions more than squeezing in some blushing moments or physical descriptions. eddie just said something heartwarming that she never imagined in her wildest dreams he'd say to her? why have her blush when she could feel like her knees were going to give in while simultaneously feeling as though she could defy gravity, disregard the very laws of physics and float on air?

that's just what I do though, anyone else have more advice for our pal????

No, but my parents had an interesting way of naming my sister and me. If we were boys my mom got to name is, girls and my dad got to name us.

A couple days ago, I think. I cry a lot. 😅

Only of the animal variety! I actually got surgically sterilized last year because I am very happy in my role as aunt and cat mom. 💖

If knitting were a professional sport I'd be an Olympian.

How nice they are. Not in the way that they might be mean, but that they might be too nice. If someone's too nice I don't trust them.

Always a happy ending! I actually can't tolerate scary movies at all.

I'm a very good knitter! And I think I'm an alright crocheter, but that's a much newer endeavor for me.

Oh no, I'm absolutely not trusting...well. Any sources, actually, until the play is frozen in December. Plays are known to cut and add back full scenes and roles in their preview period. Who knows if the show that runs on Nov. 17th will be the show that runs on Dec. 13th? Certainly not I.

I actually wouldn't be too surprised if TFS gets somewhat Ship-Of-Theseus'd by the time December comes, especially with all the last minute character swapping on the casting page. It's sus as hell, and I don't trust any of them (except Kate) farther than I can throw them.

The funny thing about previews, too, is that they aren't professionally reviewed. Shows don't get reviewed for real until they're frozen...so I wouldn't be wholly surprised if we got limited/inaccurate press surrounding it all.

If the previews make redditors mad, though, then we know we've won. It's funny, too, knowing that that mindset re: Henry has carried over to tumblr in a major way, to the point where I've seen a lot of users talking about how Henry's definitely going to be this evil manipulative force in TFS. Like okay, believe what you want, but if/when you (general) are mad that the teenage boy is just a teenage boy who craves love like anyone else...well. Reflect on that.

As soon as Em and I have seen the show, we'll be sure to tell you alllllll about it. I know Em is seeing two previews, and I'm seeing one preview and one frozen showing. So! If they swap last minute, I'll be able to tell you for certain.

People saying that Harry kissing and flirting with men just proves how monogamous Larry are and how much they trust each other. That kissing others while being monogamous is completely normal. I don't know any monogamous couples who are fine with that, hence why they're monogamous in the first place. I'm even seeing Larries say that the more men Harry kisses the more straight he is because he's just comfortable being affectionate with friends (meanwhile we've never seen him like this with women). Big yikes. Imagine dismissing someone's sexuality that he's been expressing for 12+ years because he isn't doing what you want him to. That just makes me so angry. I don't know how long you've been around as I haven't been following you for long but something really silly that has given me doubt to whether Harry and Louis are strictly monogamous is that I get the impression that Harry has a preference for older men, like a decade or so older, and Louis doesn't fit that. During 1D Harry was around older men all the time and the majority of men he has shown interest in have been much older. Not much has changed since then, he still seems drawn to them. Anyway, it just interests me.

One of my very fave things is seeing the whiplash of it all, like, omg, [insert name] is so JEALOUS, he'd never ALLOW this, etc etc., fast-forward to one month later, after alllllll kinds of public shit, let's create this whole wormhole of they're poly but monogamous. Whut. It's literally okay to say they fuck other people or that they broke up! It's messy as hell! And more importantly, it's not your mess to navigate, so let them be!

this website is way more in love with tropes and vague outlines of characters than they are the execution of characters. i love a final girl, i love a stoner, i love a reluctant father figure. but you gotta develop your characters beyond what they are. example! every six months or so, the rpc (at large) remembers they can make ocs who are celebrities. they fall in love with the glamour and glitz and scandalous ship potential of actor ocs and then realize that they gotta actually write and stay writing. blogs are abandoned very soon after. like clockwork this happens over and over while My Actress OC is off to the side and, well... not in that same sphere of hollow energy! i'm proud of my character and i would love it if people who got excited about celebrity ocs cared about writing enough to say the same

i love crossovers. i love aus. a couple years ago a trend went around of making brand new blogs which transported one canon character into a different canon universe. a character from stranger things in the scream universe, a character from friends in the fear street universe, so on and so on. potentially fun concepts that were not followed up on with any writing or real justification, but for some reason garnered immediate praise as if any heavy lifting was done. enough time has passed that i'm gonna say that was fucking stupid. a real low point for this website's creativity

i trust people who don't use icons way more than i do people who do. trust them with my character, that is. icons can be great and i use them on my other blogs, but with mara specifically i strive for her to be seen for more than graphics or a (lack of) faceclaim. writing > anything supplementary you can create on photoshop and if you disagree why are you here and not, like, deviantart

On the car note: the more computers are in a car, the less I trust it. I really, really don't like the amount of control manufacturers are trying to keep over products that have already been sold, and I don't like the way they're being used to sneak subscription models into them. I don't like that in some cases, manufacturers can brick the car remotely. I hate alllllll of that shit.
