Every year my birthday has been a disaster and this year has been no different. 

Between fighting supernatural creatures to me figuring out I am in love with my best friend, Liam, today could not be more stressful.

At school it seems as though nobody remembers it is my birthday and I don’t know if it should bother me or not. Having low expectations means I have little chance of being disappointed, but what am I supposed to feel when even my low expectations aren’t met?

As if on cue Liam yells at me from down the hall, “Happy Birthday, Y/N!�� I of course laugh. 

“Thank you, Liam!” I shouted back while walking to him.

“So any big plans tonight, Birthday Girl?” he places his arm around my shoulder.

“Wait. Hold on! Put this on.” He chuckles and hands me a blind fold.

that’s no moon (...theory)

you know I was going to put this under a jump after a nice little thing about how while I don’t like conspiracy theories this is harmless and I don’t want to yuck any yums but after this video included a clip that was like HERE’S AN UNEXPLAINED FLOATING OBJECT IN THE ASTRAL SEA. LAST WEEK WE SAW A MYSTERIOUS CITY IN THE ASTRAL SEA. and not only did not address it but completely attributed it to something else that does not even make sense, fuck that.

1. The astral plane/sea is not outer space. This whole theory falls apart the instant you are aware that the astral sea is in a different dimension and space is the thing outside of the planet’s atmosphere within the same dimension. When you look up at the sky in real life, and you see the moon do you genuinely think it’s in a different reality? Actually don’t answer that. If you do I don’t want to know.

After that I mean there’s nothing else to say, but I will, and I did put a jump so that I ruin this theory but don’t ruin your dash. You’re welcome.

2. The Gith are not unique to spelljammer, a specific setting for 2e. They’re in the 5e monster manual but have existed in D&D from the first edition; the lore of them being astral plane pirates was there pretty much from the start. The existence of Gith in a 5e D&D game merely means the DM has read the monster manual.

3. I cannot muster the strength to go through every half-assed reference to the moon that a competent editor could have covered in a quarter of the time but:

Circle of the Moon is from the PHB and it’s just a druid circle, the moon indicating the form-changing, wild shape side of druids vs. the more traditional, environmentally-based, and spell-oriented circle of the land. Keyleth was a circle of the moon druid too, which Marisha said at one point was because circle of the moon gains the ability to shape into elementals.

The moon is often associated in most real-world mythologies with the feminine aspect, with change, with night time, with secrecy, with fate, and, particularly relevant to this video, with the ocean (see: season 1 finale of Avatar the Last Airbender, also the existence of tides on the REAL EARTH like I cannot stress this enough, Catha and Ruidis are fictional but please tell me you have some basic knowledge of what a moon is).

Tolkien frequently associated elves with moonlight, starlight, and nighttime.

Sehanine Moonweaver is just part of normal forgotten realms lore that was folded into the Dawn War pantheon which in turn is what Matt used for the pantheon in Critical Role (+ Sarenrae from the Pathfinder canon, because funnily enough you can take lore from something without the entire source becoming canon immediately).

A moon-touched sword is a common magical item (Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, page 138).

4. All the stuff about Molaesmyr and the sword seems more like links between the Blooming Grove and Molaesmyr (both being blessed by Melora and Corellon, both being in the Savilirwood). Additionally, Molaesmyr is one of the few cities that survived the calamity before later falling to the blight that sounds much like the blight that came to the Blooming Grove and was notably an elven city which meant it was more likely to include worshippers of the moon goddess Sehanine, a deity who is, and I cannot stress this enough, stated in the video to be primarily an elven deity. It is not weird that a researcher of the moon would be like “yeah I look for information about the moon in one of the few locations on this continent that did not fall during a nearly world-ending event, full of people who worshipped the moon goddess.” I mean it’s no mysterious astral blip you’re completely ignoring, but you know when people are saying something on a podcast that’s extremely wrong and you know the answer and you’re just screaming in your car? This video was that, but for over 51 minutes, like there were so many dots ripe to be connected and instead you made me watch a clip of an anime in the sancitity of my own house.

5. Further occam’s razor notes: the parent of a toddler/CEO of a company/working actor/person with ADHD being on their phone briefly during a D&D game and then getting off their phone and paying attention? goodness me! what other strange rituals have you observed in your travels? Oh, the artwork of a world that’s explicitly stated to have two moons depicts two moons? wild. Asking a weird question on the spot of someone who once played a character who tried to murder santa got you a troll-like response? wow. better read into that.

6. Okay I’ll stop being sarcastic for a full 15 seconds to note that the height of half-orcs is “between 5 and 7 feet tall”; Fjord is well within that range and in fact towards the top of it; if you’ve been imagining him shorter than Yasha, that’s a you problem (unless you are imagining Yasha as like 6′6″, which is also not canonical but I have transferred my annoyance about Yasha’s height over to this garbage video so like, do what you want). Yeah he’s on the smaller side but within normal size ranges; this could just mean his human parent was short and skinny, or his orc parent was short and skinny for an orc, or his non-orc parent was actually elven, or that one parent was a half-orc and one was human, or that someone who grew up in an orphanage was malnourished and never got super buff. I mean, Yasha and Reani are both aasimar and don’t exactly look alike. I’m 5′5″ and when I see a 6′8″ person I don’t ask them if they’re from space.

Really, in addition to not making some glaringly obvious and far more valid connections the thing that grinds my gears here is that this video, despite editing that I found illogical and frustrating, did compile a good deal of moon and space (and astral plane, which is not the same as space, I will keep saying this) lore. It is worth considering that there are magical meteors! Ruidis really is, in Exandrian lore, alleged to have connections to the betrayer gods! I’d love for someone with two brain cells to rub together and a basic understanding of logical fallacies to take a crack at what’s going on there! But instead I got this. I mean it’s not  even a tin foil hat, it’s like, crumpled tin foil covered in the moldy remains of bad takeout pizza that someone put on their head.

Claiming The Prince’s Heart

Sunlight beams through fleece clouds, filtering its rays through the thickets of yellowing canopy, and shining down on the blanket of red leaves coating the forest floor. A torrent of a river is not too far off, streaming water that was so clear and reflective that you could make the stars out in them. Accompanied by her own heavy steps, and the prince’s behind her. It’s been awhile since I’ve gotten to come out here, I’ll have to make sure to give him my thanks. Of course..

“Dame Vivi,” She turns, head bowed, smiling. Unable to help the pull of her lip, it wasn’t every day that she got to see her highness. Especially not like this. With his hands clasped tightly together and eyes darting around every which way, a hint of rosiness blossoming in his cheek- whether it was from the mild chill or his utter delight on being let outside for once- well, it wouldn’t have made a difference. “Thank you for accompanying me out here today. I promise that it has left me with nothing less than gratitude and ecstasy, I will make sure you are rewarded handsomely for your sacrifice-”

“Your highness, with all due respect,” 

“Yes?” He continues to smile, but now it is almost perfect, a replication of a doll. 

“You dont have to address my like other nobles, your highness.” 

Arthur noticably deflated. His prim and proper smile dropping with a sigh and he sags forward, “Thank the good heavens.. I was wondering when you’d give me the go ahead..” He mumbles, pressing his fingers into his cheeks and forcibly massaging them. The ache must have been unbearable! Vivi snorts into her palm- accidentally bumping her nose in too far.

“You know, you don’t have to wait for me,” she explains, and part of her wonders how many times he has, but with a flick of her wrist, and grabbing his attention, she adds, “you could just begin to address me casually as soon as we step out.”

“And let the other guards and ad-advisors think you’re a seduc-ductress in disguise?” Arthur crosses his arms, nodding his head back to the castle with a bitterness clouding his eyes, Vivi only laughed more, “Nah, I’ll pass.”

“Haha! How funny. To think!” Taking a step forward, Vivi takes his wrist and holds it up, pulling him into her, leading him into a twirl, “The one dame they have been sending you out with every season is the one slowly undoing all of their precious work!” His disdain melts away, and he falls with her elegantly- he must have learned the dance recently. Vivi lets go of Arthur and drapes herself dramatically against a nearby tree, feigning despair, “Oh, the tragedy!”

A hand flashes out before her, and despite the anxiety Vivi could feel from its slacked position a dazzling warmth dancing across his face instead, “The Greeks will have a thrill recounting our t-tales.”

“Our downfalls,” She takes his, pulling him into the clearing.

Bad idea, Arthur’s eyes dart in every which direction, “O-our triumphs,” before his expression shifts and- 

“Into the great fall of the Hidorian kingdom!” They sing in usion, before Arthur bursts into a fit of cackling giggles, muffled by his own hand slapping a hand over his mouth. Raising her eyebrow, Vivi couldn’t help but laugh as well. But what made him this hysterical..? Dread? Is a war on the way?

“Well, i’m glad to hear you’re still in good spirits, your highness..” Standing straight, she returns to his side and places a hand on his shoulder- ignoring how he stiffens, “But you don’t usually joke about .. that. Is something up? Everything going alright with your healer?”

A shallow breath, and he stands straight. Any amount of cheeriness they just had vanished in an instant. “… Ah, yeah, it’s fine..” Frowning, Vivi crosses her arms, able to tell by the shudder in Arthurs shoulders that there was bound to be more. Swinging around- far too exaggerated than one would ever assume of a prince, his voice spills out of his mouth faster than he thought, “Well! things are-! Uh They are k-kinda difficult! But-! But, it’ll be alright in the end. No- nothing.. Will fall or- be destroyed or- or .. anything!”

“Hm.” Arthur freezes in his place, eyes wide and lit like candle flames, tucking her hands behind her back, Vivi leans forward barely an inch, “I won’t push if you desire, but what do you mean? Surely something must be wrong for you to talk about the end of our name.” Slowly approaching him, Vivi watches his shoulders ride up into his ears and his eyes dart from the trees, the grass and finally back to her. As if worried that someone else will hear. 

Cringing, Arthur bites his lip, “Well… I- we… “ In the distance a twig snaps- most likely from a squirrel- but Arthur jolts hard and jumps into a ridiculously panicked pose, eyes wide and eyebrows furrowed together, breath rapid. 

“Your highness,” he flinches again, gaze shifting one last time before realization dawned on him… how ludicrous he was being. “This… you cannot speak a word of this to anyone. Understand?” 

With a nod, Vivi lets her arms cross and her eyes soften- hopefully lending an ounce of peace to Arthur. 

“We-we..  figured I am still a hopeless romantic,” A rush of blood filling his cheeks, averting his gaze, “The priestess worries I’ve been .. st-struck by cupid’s arrow, and considering the curse… I… “ Arms folding, he clutches the fabric tightly and gnaws on his lip- hard enough to be noticeable, and Vivi resists the urge to warn him against it.

But the fear that noticeably coursed through his body. Hard shadows reflecting that onto the otherwise vibrant scenery around them. A cold wind slamming into them at the same time. For good reason too.

That wouldn’t stop her. Moving closer, Vivi resists the urge to take him by the shoulders and hold him close in a hug, “Yes? Did someone catch your eye?” 

Arthur pauses, eyeing her carefully. His eyebrows furrowed together and for half a second his lip quivered. 

Before his smile- lacking anything real- returns and his shoulders sink, “You can say that, Dame Vivi. Hopefully in the coming years, it won’t be an issue anymore.”

“Why’s that?”

Arthur tilts his head, “You ask a lot, don’t you?”

“When I hear any news concerning my prince and my kingdom, I must know every detail. To quell my aching heart.” Her heart was racing, slamming against her chest. Whatever fear she felt wouldn’t find its way onto her face, however. Not when he was already under this stress. 

He didn’t relax. Instead the artificial structure of his posture and expression had become especially more fabricated. “A witch is on his way to the kingdom tonight. Do you by chance recall the name, Lewis Pepper?”

“Lewis Pepper of Paradiso. A promising Witch who stumbled upon the kingdom at the age of five. Possessing the great prowess of a Shaman- able to communicate and control the unknown realm with minor complication. A prodigy who had been taken in by the monks to properly train and learn.” Vivi recites, spouting off the information like it was her own name. Of course she would know his name. All Knights and Dames are required to learn the names and attributes of all known magic users- whether affiliated with religion or not. 

Magic never fails, and its power of the three realms is even more so. But harnessable by human beings? Humans who are driven to madness over a single thought and possessing ambitions beyond themselves? 

Leaving those of that nature unchecked is a death sentence. Everyone knew this.

Arthur tilts his head, “I’m pleased, then I won’t have to give another explanation. Tonight, he will be arriving here, and we will be performing a ritual. One that will hopefully cure me of this dreaded hex.”

“What-!” Vivi gasps. Mouth hanging open, several thoughts jumbling up and smacking together in a buzzing train of thought, “But-!…” Questions are about to fly, but Arthurs expression shifts from empty kindness and content to a look that a testy tyrant would wear. Daring her. Vivi grinds her teeth, takes a short breath, and straightens up, “Ahem, my dearest apologies your highness. That is excellent news, and I am delighted to hear it. However, I do have concerns.”

“And what would those concerns be?” 

Taking a deep breath, Vivi looks him in the eyes, and doesn’t flinch when she meets Arthur’s face again, “I mean no disrespect, but hasn’t previous attempts at this exact thing been a failure? Not only that, but you must be aware of his… condition.”

“Whatever do you mean?” 

“Reverend Pepper isn’t completely human.”

Arthur’s eyes widen for hardly a second, before he closes his eyes and nods, “We are well aware of his inhumane status. In fact, during the ritual, several more priests and witches- all under our own name- will be overlooking the rituals. As well as a charge of Dames and Knights.”

She hums, and her shoulders sag, nodding as her mind begins to drift, picturing the worst case scenarios, “Of course. I can only imagine that there would be ample security.”

“Dame Vivi.” 

She straightens up again.

“Would you like to join the onlookers tonight?” 

Heart stillen, Vivi gulps. 

“I would feel much safer with you present.” 

A carriage rolls across the dirt path - its wheels filled with creaking and its occupants spoke silent chatterings with hushed whispers - slowly approaches the secret entrance to the grand Hidorian palace. A sheltered and hidden part of the castle, where no civilian should be able to locate and travel inside without the consultant of the guards and council. 

Now, a great gathering of guards, priests and scribes were settled around its gate. The great councils and advisors of the king and the prince stood tall. Lacking care for how their fine robes draped against the ground and was stained by its dirt. Of course, none would dare mention it in the presence of the King and the Prince. 

Those two stood in the front and center of the gathering, watching the carriage roll through without a sound. 

Arthur shuffles in his spot, fists tightly pressed to his hips. Beads of sweat threaten to slide down his cheek as his anxiety grows with each creak of those wheels. Lip pulled in a nervous frown, Arthur spares the king a look, “Your majesty-”

“That isn’t my name, Arthur.” 

Uncle. Arthur spares his uncle a look, and he coughs back the urge to mention how that was inappropriate. But then again- who was going to tell them how to address one another? “Fine- Lance, uh-” As the words come out, it became abundantly clear that he didn’t have a single clue on what to ask the shorter man- who now peers over to him with an eyebrow raised, which was in itself very reminiscent of how he looked much earlier in life when his brother was king and he was a simple black smith who didn’t take anything from anyone and-

“Arthur.” 

He swallows back the urge to whine, forcing his gaze back to the carriage. He can almost see the outline of the Witch through the sun kissed tarps- and god did he look massive. Arthurs shoulders sank along with his heart and finally his brain spits out something, “Just- just nervous. I- ahem, I worry if this ritual will work, or if there will be any spies within their group or-” 

“There is no need to worry, your highness.” A priestess takes a step beside him, and her comforting presence does nothing to take away the unease on his shoulders. He meets her gaze, and it’s obvious she feels the same. It’s been this way ever since their last.. meeting. Blond hair in tight coils against her scalp, and her look of worry even more prominent, Madam Chloe continues, “According to the advisors, only Reverend Pepper will be present during the ritual.” 

“And his companions will not be coming forth into the castle.” An advisor- Duet- mentions from behind him. Arthur spares them a glance, and instead of the usual look of stoic content, there was twinges of worry lacing their features. Much like the rest of the Knights and Dames, as well as the priests and nuns and … everyone. 

It did nothing to ease the stress in his shoulders, but it wasn’t like it wasn’t expected. It was always this way. Arthur reminds himself, switching his attention back to the carriage, which finally stopped. Its Coach man lifting the door that held the key to his own salvation. 

Stepping out, was truly a monster of a man. Dressed in dark robes and wooly hair pulled back in a conservative manner, and glassy purple eyes shifting to meet his gaze. This time Arthur couldn’t even begin to process the sheer magnitude of him. Not only that but how… terrifying it was to be in his presence. He’s heard many times of what this man looks like, how tall he is, and how strong he is due to his inhuman nature. Except now it was real, and it was triple his expectation. 

But despite that, somehow, Reverend Pepper had… such a gentleness to his eye. A calm smile and his presence seemed to exude peace. All despite being a witch. Arthur gulps back his anxiety, straightening up, and looks him in the eye. 

“Welcome, Reverend Pepper. We are humbled to make your acquaintance. Was the trip smooth and stress free.” 

Pepper, chuckling the smallest bit, nods, “It was delightful to take in the scenery of your kingdom your majesty. It truly is the city of gold. However, if I may, you do not refer to me by that title. Lewis will do.” 

Arthur’s throat tightened, nodding a bit too quickly, “Lewis, of course. Please call me Arthur.” He takes a step forward and holds out his hand, suddenly overly aware of his actions when several eyes pin to his back, both from his side and Lewis’s. 

One must never knowingly take the hands of a caster, for they may be able to grab your soul through your hand and make you their servant. The lesson repeats in his head seven times before he noticed Lewis tilting his head, amused. 

“My, I didn’t take you for someone so trusting,” Lewis says, thoughtfully watching him and- to much of the horror of everyone else- takes Arthur’s hand firmly, “Thank you for allowing me the pleasure to help you, your highness. I will not fail you.”

As the King, Prince, and Witch spoke to one another, the tense and active air growing more screwed up and yet relaxed with the easy conversation. Neither the king nor Arthur paying the frightful bunches any mind. 

Madam Chloe feels a presence beside her, and eyes boring into her. Whether or not Duet wanted to speak to her, she didn’t turn her head to him. Keeping her hands clasped together and her eyes trained on every movement the prince made. 

Finally, a low whisper, “Do they seem untrustworthy to you, Madam Chloe?”

“No,” she admits, swallowing her tongue back, her fists tighten, “no, the chances of him doing anything is slim. I promise.” Nothing emitted from the man to show otherwise. No malice, no hatred, and all metallic clinks and trinkets within his robes weren’t the angry and swift voice of fallen victims, but instead a smooth, calming voice of a healer. And yet, her stomach twists and folds into knots, and Duet seemed to notice. If they were the only ones present, there’s a chance they would have placed a hand on her shoulder. Her mouth burned, but she kept her teeth ground shut. 

Duet must have heard it too, because they turn to her and watch her twitchy movements. They sigh, and turn to the King and Prince. “Your majesty, your highness.” The two turn back to him, King Lance’s expression unreadably gruff and Prince Arthur’s so obviously panicked. From behind them, Reverend Pepper leaned forward with interest- as well as everyone else. Duet continues on, “Madam Chloe and I need a moment to discuss some important matters. With your permission, may we take our leave?” 

King Lance stares at them fixedly, appearing uncaring for a single moment until it occurs to Madam Chloe just how much he seemed to debate that thought in his head. A glint being her only hint, and the rest being the grueling sensation of his aura. Tearing into her like paper. 

Do not lash out. She reminds herself, hiding her twisting fists out of sight. Only able to hope that he wouldn’t suspect anything from the two. 

“Granted,” The king says, snapping Chloe out of her spur and her eyes widen a fraction before she reminds herself to stay calm, unwavering. “Take one of the Dames or Knights with you.” 

Duet holds up a hand, “Your majesty, that wouldn’t be necessary-” 

“Take one with you. For security measures.” King Lance repeats, and this time they both knew that defying him further would end up with them in their deathbeds. Bowing their head, Duet nods.

“Of course, your Majesty. Please forgive my ignorance.” 

Chloe lifts her head more, tearing her gaze away from the king, and landing on the prince. Arthur. Who stared at her, with so much fear hidden in his eyes, fear and terror. 

I’m sorry, Arthur. 

A knight walks up to them, “Shall we be on our way?” he asks, and Chloe doesn’t respond, allowing her eyes to downcast, guilt welling up in her throat like glue. 

“Of course.”

A woman was shackled to the wall. Her feet shackles as well. Her head hung low, and she didn’t move much besides for her gentle breathing- attempting to not breathe in too harshly and activate her sinuses. These dungeons were far too dirty to have breathable air. A harsh stench of a decaying body reached her nose, as well as the freely spoken words of the guards and knights of who to alert. 

”We failed to keep this one alive, what should we explain to the Captain?”

”Explain that it was the magician. It appears they casted a spell on themselves to ease them into Death’s embrace.”

The first knight scoffs, or laughs, she couldn’t tell. ”A coward’s way out, I tell you. Can’t even die with dignity.”

She cared to disagree, searching through the murky depths of her own vision to take in her own clothes. Stained with blood, powder, and losing the glow of protection she casted onto herself. Soon, she’s going to become hungry, and shrivel up in pain, wishing for anything to eat. If the Hidorian kingdom was like any other. They would leave her to starve. Or, perhaps keep her hanging onto life for as long as possible, to get answers, to show her origin, to- 

Heavy clicks fills her ears, and the knights who were posted fell silent. The scrap of metal gliding against metal alluding to the possibility that they were bowing in respect. ”Advisor Duet, It is a pleasure to see you here.”

”As well as to you. I have heard reports of a new magician dressed in green being locked away in here. May I see her?” Her blond hair falls in front of her eyes as she peers down to her stained clothes- meant to blend in with the nature around her. How could they possibly think it’s strictly green?

”Y-yes! Fo-forgive us for the conditions of her cellar, we-.. We didn’t have enough room to hold her in a prope-”

”There is no need to explain to me, I know that it isn’t customary to bring prisoners to proper rooms when one had just perished. Besides, she is in need of cleansing and washing, isn’t she?”

 The knights are silent for a second, ”Y-yes, she is still covered in… magic. D-Duet! Shall we accompany you? To ensure she doesn’t pull a nasty trick-”

A laugh, low and gentle, ”That will not be necessary. Her cellar is close, am I wrong? You do not need to follow after me then. At the very least, feel free to escort me to her. I do not want to keep her waiting.” The smug tone only brought a look of a shriveled man with a snarky grin across their face. She could spit. Spit in their face for all she cared.

”Of course, Duet. We will be you to her right now.” Her arms and muscles stiffen, clenching her eyes shut, she takes a deep breath- despite the rot filling her lungs- and holds it. Steeling herself for anything. 

”Glorious.”

Three sets of footsteps, one considerably softer than the others, traverse the dim and dirty halls to her cellar. Sure enough, three silhouettes appear in front of the bars. She didn’t lift her head. Able to feel their gaze on her, locking her in place. 

“You two may disperse now. I will handle all proceedings coming forth.” The smug voice, low and nasally, ripples through the cellar just in time for one of the grated doors to open. Much to the displeasure of the two knights, but she can imagine that Duet simply waved them off, because in the next few minutes, the two knights leave. All that was left was Duet, herself, and the dingy cellar. The chains holding her grind together awkwardly. 

For a second, there’s only silence. 

“Well, hello there, young lady. Or would you rather I refer to you differently?” 

Her jaw clenches and tightens, lungs feeling full, tight, ready to burst, and without her own input, she’s looking up at them. Cheeks full of air that squeezed past her lips. They quirk an eyebrow, twisting their head. 

Despite the darkness shrouding them both, it was clear they were smiling- but if it was for contentness or asserting, she couldn’t tell. “I wonder what you’re doing that for? Mind to release your breath and explain it to me. I’m eager to learn.” 

She doesn’t. Chest tight and instead sucking in more breath. 

“Ah, I see. You don’t want to speak to me, do you?”

Her wrists pull, blood pumping. 

Their smile drops, and they nod solemnly, “Understood. Well, I will make my case quickly for you then. If you wish to ask for clarification, I would advise you to open your mouth, or show the feistiness you possessed earlier during your capture.” 

Shit, that’s right, it dawns onto her again, and her eyebrows furrowing together from discomfort. She had been screaming earlier, as dames and guards overwhelm her, pin her to the ground in the library. Snatching her tools and forcing her into submission. All in front of the Prince she was trying so hard to take down. It wasn’t her fault-! Him becoming king would result in the end of the world-! No one would allow that- Duet takes a step forward, eyes training into hers, and in retaliation she squeezes them shut. 

“Rest assured, I have done everything in my power to find a way to ensure your safety, young lady. However, the king is far more stubborn than you are, and he doesn’t typically take much mercy to magicians and sorcerers such as yourself.” Duet hums a bit to themself, “As you can perhaps imagine why. The use of magic to manipulate the supernatural is a skill that is feared by many, especially since magic never fails. You understand why the use of magic is highly regulated and in some cases, entirely outlawed, correct?” 

They wait for a few seconds, their smiles returning, “It’s because a magician, such as yourself, assassinated the rulers of various empires and kingdoms around us. Including our previous ruler, who single handedly brought our kingdom to its golden age. Your presence, your assassination of our prince, is nothing but proof that those laws are neceassary.” 

She knew, she’s always known. FIguring out magic was hard enough as it is, but with the restrictions, its only more demanding of its user. Her lungs started to burn.

“You are to be executed by dawn, do you know that?” 

It slams into her, like a brick. Any remnant of calm shatters like glass and she gasps. Choking, sputtering, gasping for air as her head spins. Executed? Why- Duet takes a step back to dodge the spit flying from her mouth. 

“For attempted assassination of our next ruler. Surely, you would have understood that when you came into our kingdoms’ courts and violated our most sacred rules.” The smugness returned, she was in his court, and as far as she knew, there was little she could do. She peers up at him, desperation lacing her oxygen deprived brain, begging. She couldn’t tell if Duet was pitying her at that moment. “But, this isn’t the first time a magic user has entered our kingdom. And you will quickly learn that it is due to myself that they’re still here.”

What..? 

“We have a Dame who is quite famous for her work, and I know that she uses magic. It is in her blood, able to summon and borrow power from a god among animals that has sworn itself to her family. It took a long while to convince the King to allow her, but because of her good image, her new found status, it was easier to convince him to allow you a chance.”

She blinks up at him, confused, and mouth hanging agape with questions and worries she couldn’t begin to fathom. 

“The prince is quite nervous, and is in need of a priest to help him rest his worries, and figure out how to live his life with a hex plaguing him. I figured, who would be better to help him than a magician turned priestess.”

“A … a priestess..? Me…?”

“Of course. Living a life of celibacy, honor and honesty. All in exchange for not perishing tomorrow. How does that sound?” 

“F… fuck you!” She spits, grinding her teeth as rage fills her skin and boils out of her ears, surely her expression was akin to death itself, but Duet seemed entirely unphased. “I won’t do shit for you! I’d rather watch this kingdom burn to the ground with every monster in it-!” Her voice fell silent. She blinks, eyebrows furrowing as her mouth hangs open, starting to move but nothing coming out. A painful, stretched feeling overtaking her vocal chords and leaving her throat raw and strained. She tried to scream, but it only worsened the pain. 

“I wouldn’t recommend you continue, miss,” Duet says, his tone harsh and cold, uncaring, “regardless if you live for another century under the oaths of a god or die at a cross made of bones, the only tongue you will speak is truth.” Each word felt like a knife, slicing into her slowly, forcing her body to still and numb, “Only one secret will die with you, the secret of this spell, and your inability to resist the burn of hidden words on your tongue. It’ll feel much more like a hot coal in your teeth the longer you hold it back.” 

Her body shivers, crying out as her voice suddenly comes back, stinging tears falling from her eyes as her body sags and her mouth starts to burn. 

“Now,” Duet says silently, “why don’t you start with your name?”

Her stomach and arms lurch, heart pounding and nearly jumping out of her chest, up her throat and onto the floor. Before she trembles, and letters connect and fall out before she can stop them- try to.

“Ch-chloe..” 

“Madam Chloe,” Duet watches her knowingly, noticing how her arms shook and the way her jaw clenches and almost smiling. God she could rip that fucking face off of their skull if she could. Chloe’s mind screams, fists tighter than ever before. Her body has never contained so much anger, hatred, and regret than it has right now. Before being captured she could scream and fight her heart out, but priesthood was a very different ballgame. And it’s one that is filled with bitterness and fury beyond anyone’s comprehension. Even more so now that her lungs are filled with ash and the ember of a tongue has grown worse. 

But a secret isn’t a secret when it’s given to her. 

“Prince Arthur has fallen in love.” 

“Your highness,” Lewis’s voice finds him through the swarming ocean of madness and confusion, bringing his mind back to the candle lit room, and to the heavy chain around his neck. The weight of it pulling his neck down, and reminding him of how small he felt in the circle. Arthur opens his eyes to confirm if he was still there. Maybe to see if his daydream was real. 

Of course it wasn’t real. Arthurs brain reminds him, staring down at the chalk covering the floor around him, the blood red glow of the candles casting hard shadows everywhere, Lewis isn’t here to help you escape, Arthur. He’s here to cure you. Why would you even think that up in the first place? His shoulders tense up like his stomach- soured and sucked in so much it was painful, and he swallows back harshly, shooing away the wishes clouding his head more and more. 

Arthur clenches his eyes shut and allows the resulting thunder of his muscles attempt at clearing his thoughts. And when the lingering whispers of hope refused to stop, his logic bellowed. He wouldn’t ever ride away on a horse, clutching the hand of his dame and- and certainly not following the lead of this kind and gentle Witch. The grassy plains and the warm sky was nothing but a fantasy that he desperately wished to crawl away in. Maybe if he prayed hard enough, Lewis would hear and grant his worries and pull him out of that depraved room and from those begging eyes. He didn’t need to look to see those sharp gazes boring into him. Hell, Arthurs surprised he doesn’t have scars from the piercing stares- they nearly burned into his skin!

A throat clears, “Your highness,” and Arthur’s attention snaps up to Lewis, who somehow still looked peaceful even with the deranged lighting. He smiles warmly, taking Arthurs left hand- which was a trembling, shaking fist- and slowly painting on the symbols against the top. The coldness of the paint made him flinch. Lewis didn’t say anything, “You seem more nervous than before, is this bothering you?” 

“Y-you could say that.” Arthur mumbles, glaring at the hand in Lewis’s grasp and trying to will it to stop shaking as much as it did, but his words only seemed to worsen it. Much to his surprise, Lewis gently begins to massage his palm and wrist, and Arthur’s heart jumps into his throat. 

“It is understandable, Arthur.” Lewis murmurs, words already beginning to soothe him, “These types of procedures do bring out the worst of the imagination.” His eyes flicker up, a small grin dancing on his lips- or was it the light? Arthur blinks rapidly but before he could try and look and check, Lewis was done, and shuffling back to his original spot.

His heart raced, whatever it was. Arthur couldn’t even begin to wonder why the smallest look was sending his brain spiralling. Control yourself, Lewis is just- just trying to comfort you! Nothing more!

Yeah. Yeah, that’s it. Just-just keep reminding yourself of that, okay? Okay.

As soon as he was back in his proper place, Lewis sat up straight and nodded to his right. There was two persons there sat behind two large drums, and upon his signal, they slammed their mallets against it. It’s beat so loud, Arthur could feel it in every part of his body. His mind going numb, and Lewis began to explain,=.

“Tonight, I will draw this curse out from your body and into the amulet you bare now.” His voice was different, commanding, fierce, “Whatever demon is held in your soul, Arthur Kingsmen, it will be gone by dawn’s end.”

Y/N’s mother continues her reign of terror, and we get some NSFW with Freddie and the reader in this one (because jesus, who wouldn’t need some form of stress relief after the last chapter. I should know, I wrote it!) It is pretty explicit though, so if that isn’t your thing, just a warning!

It seemed all too long for Freddie to clean up and make sure your mother was settled, and you nearly leapt into his arms when he finally came into the bedroom.

“Thank you,” you murmured. “Thank you, thank you, thank you, I’ll never be able to thank you enough for all of this. You shouldn’t even be having to deal with her. I’m so sorry.” 

He hushed you. “She’s on the couch now, resting. Probably not asleep yet, but quiet, at least.” 

You giggled. “It’s a miracle.” 

“It is!” 

“I owe Rog one,” you sighed. “A big one. If he’s ever in mortal danger, maybe I could come close to paying him back.” 

“You know he didn’t mind helping, or he wouldn’t have stayed,” Freddie said, quiet, mindful of your mother being so close. “And I’m willing to bet he will have his mother call here to speak to her tomorrow, so that should be interesting. We’ll have to make popcorn for that show.” 

“Oh god,” you muttered, and flopped back on the bed while he undressed. “She’s radioactive or something. She gets near, and it spreads to everyone. Why?” 

“Misery loves company,” he said. “I’m going to go get ready. You alright in here, alone?” 

“You think she might try and sneak in or something?” 

He shrugged. “I wouldn’t put it past her.” 

You groaned, and turned over onto your stomach to mutter wordlessly into the mattress. 

“I’ll be right back,” he whispered, and you tried to relax as he left. 

There were at least the sounds to focus on. His soft footfalls in the hall, the sound of the faucet in the bathroom. The little bits of humming that floated on the air, sometimes from current Queen songs, other things that you didn’t recognize but figured you might hear on the next album.

You weren’t exactly sleepy by the time he got back, but you were relaxed enough to be breathing normally. 

He joined you on the bed, a hand resting gently on your back. “You want to go get ready? I’ll be ready to jump out there, in case she tries to ambush you.” 

“How on earth did this turn into a war?” you sighed. “Or was it always one?” 

“She seems to make a lot of things feel like one,” Freddie replied. “I mean, going off my two experiences with her so far, and what you’d told me about her before. First impressions aren’t always accurate, of course, but this one seems to be.” 

 You nodded. “I need to brush my teeth.” 

“Dash out there, get it done, and dash back,” Freddie advised. “I’ll catch her if she gets up and tries to bother you. Ready?” 

You giggled despite yourself. He had a way of making it almost fun. “Ready.”

You did just as he said, and quietly darted down the hall to the bathroom. It was difficult, but you tried to listen for any sounds of movement over the sound of the faucet as you readied yourself for bed. Just as you thought it was safe, you heard a creak from the sofa.

You opened the door to find her standing there, but Freddie was already out of the bedroom, in a pair of lounge sweatpants and his satin robe, untied and fluttering as he moved. 

“Is there something you need? We can get it for you, whatever it is,” he said. “Glass of water, midnight snack-” 

“No,” she interrupted. “I just...wanted to make a request.” 

“Oh,” he said. “Well then. What can we help you with?” 

“I ask only that, if you two...do anything...in bed tonight, that you be mindful of the noise,” she replied to him, but her eyes were locked on yours. “When you were back at home, it occasionally got...well. Creaks of the bed, and things like that. No one wants to hear that.” 

You watched Freddie’s Adam’s Apple bob as he swallowed, his lips pursed. You had a feeling you knew what he wanted to say, that this was his damned flat and he’d make all the damned noise in bed he wanted (an opinion you agreed with completely), but instead, he sighed. 

“We’ll be mindful. As we tried to be then, as well.” 

“Practice makes perfect, I suppose,” she tutted. “Just so long as it doesn’t wake me up.” 

You could see in Freddie’s eyes the plan he wanted to enact, and that frankly, you wanted to as well. To fuck as hard and as loudly as you could, so that you’d wake not just her, but the neighbors and half the block as well if you did it right. 

But again, he showed restraint. “We wouldn’t want that. Sleep well. Y/N, shall we away?” 

You eagerly took his hand and walked with him to the bedroom, shutting the door to it behind you, and locking it. 

You both dropped to the bed with exasperated sighs. 

“She is...so tiring,” Freddie muttered, covering his face with his hands. “How on earth have you lived with her your entire life, without help to deal with her?” 

“I don’t know, I guess,” you admitted. “You can get used to anything, if you never know any different.” 

“Well, you know different now,” Freddie said. “And if I have my way, you will never have to get used to that, to her, ever again.” 

“Tomorrow, we get her to a hotel,” you said.

“Exactly,” he nodded. “I cannot believe I’m saying this, but I’m almost too tired to fuck.” 

“Aww,” you said softly. “That’s a shame. I was hoping to fuck you into the bed, hard enough that we both forget tonight even happened.” 

“I said almost,” Freddie grinned, and carefully rolled over on top of you, moving to pull off and toss aside his robe. “Oh, but we mustn’t wake her.” 

You giggled at his sarcasm. “Oh, we absolutely can’t. We’re only fucking in our flat, after all.” 

He smiled so warmly at you then, that it melted you delightfully, his head resting against your chest, deep brown eyes staring happily into yours. “We are. Does that mean...I mean, should I tell John-” 

“To let the other tenants do whatever they want, because I’ve already got a flat to stay in?” you interrupted softly. “Yeah. If you’ll have me, I want to be here, with you.” 

You could feel his joy in his kiss, in the grinding of his hips against yours, how his hands traced their way around your body. 

“Is that a yes?” you laughed when he stopped for a breath. 

“Of course it is,” he smiled. “Bonus, you know she’ll just die when she finds this out.”

“Will be off when they need to be,” Freddie replied. “We’ve got you to take care of first.”

He lifted his head up, and grinned. “There’s just no keeping you quiet, is there?”

“God! Not that, not here! Do not bring her in here, this is a sacred place!”

He nodded, and stood to finish undressing. “How do you want it?” 

“Can I turn over, and just lay prone? I don’t think that’ll make too much noise with the bed,” you replied.

“That too,” you admitted. “But I also really don’t want her knocking on the door while we’re in the middle of this.” 

“Fair enough,” Freddie said. “I don’t either.” 

“Condoms are in my bag,” you said as you rolled onto your stomach, shoving a pillow under your hips for decent leverage. 

“Got it,” Freddie said, and you heard him rustling through your still not-totally-unpacked luggage until he found them. 

There was a sound outside the bedroom door, and you both froze.

“I love you, but I swear to god, if your mother is listening to us fuck,” Freddie whispered.

“I know,” you whispered back, turning to watch the door so he could focus on putting on the condom. “I think we’re okay though. If she’s out there, at least she isn’t trying to get in.” 

“Darling, you really need to raise your standards there,” Freddie said, and gestured for you to turn back again.

“As long as I’m there with you, I don’t care where we end up,” you sighed.

“Not there,” you laughed quietly. “Anywhere but there.” 

There was a sound again outside of the door, and he grumbled. 

“I swear, she’s out there. She’s listening for us! Go to bed, for fuck’s sake!” 

“Let’s give her something to hear then,” you said, as the sound of footsteps near the door came through it clearly, again. 

He slipped out of you, and you whined the feeling, but quickly stood and tossed the pillow to the floor so he could lay back on the bed, even though your legs were jelly. 

You slipped him back inside of you carefully as you straddled him, and smirked as the mattress creaked with the motion.

“This is a little bit evil, you know that?” he grinned.

The mattress let out a groan of its own, and you fought back a laugh as the footsteps outside the door pattered quickly away.

You struggled to keep quiet as you came, grinding against him as hard as you could without risk of hurting him (though you still had a feeling you might leave a bruise or two on his hip bones.) He did his best as well, kissing you and moaning into your mouth as he shuddered, his cock pulsating inside of you. 

You both rested for a moment like that, kissing hard as you came back down. 

Suddenly, from just outside the bedroom door you heard it: a scandalized “Oh goodness!” and footsteps running away again.

“I didn’t even hear her come back over,” you whispered.

“You were busy with more important things,” Freddie smiled, pressing another kiss to your lips before he let you move off of him, groaning as he slipped out of you. “I hate that she’s here, but I love fucking like that.” 

“Spite fucking?” 

“I don’t know if that’s the exact right thing to call it, but sure, let’s go with that for now,” he replied. “Do we have a towel in here? I don’t want to have to walk past her to clean up.” 

“We do, thankfully,” you said, and tossed it over to him. “You first, then me.” 

After you were both cleaned up, the condom tossed away, you flopped back into bed, boneless.

“Maybe she’ll be gone when we wake up,” you pondered. “That would be too good to be true though, wouldn’t it?” 

He snuggled against you. “Probably. But we can always hope. And if she isn’t, she will be after we set her up with a hotel.” 

“And then we can fuck as loudly as we want,” you yawned. 

He nodded, his breathing slowed, and you could tell he was already essentially asleep. 

That was one other thing you could spitefully enjoy too. You and Freddie sleeping deeply and happily together, while she slept fitfully on the couch, likely horrified at the fact that you had dared to let your ‘bedroom activities’ make any noise at all.

You woke to the rapping of a fist on the bedroom door, and sighed. 

“Hi, Mum. We’ll be up in a minute!” 

“It’s nearly noon!” she shouted through the door. “If you hadn’t stayed up so late...” 

Freddie grumbled as he woke, rubbing at his eyes. “Did she seriously just admit to hearing us fuck, and being awake for all that?” 

“I think she did,” you groaned. “Jesus.” 

“Maybe she’ll volunteer to go to a hotel,” Freddie said, yawning as he rolled out of bed. 

“I hope so,” you said. “You would think, after last night...” 

You pulled on your pajama pants, and stumbled out of the room with a yawn.

“Oh! Y/N! A shirt, for goodness’ sake!” your mother nearly shouted. 

“Why?” Freddie asked as he popped around you, his own chest bare, the sweatpants from last night slung low on his hips. You could see just a hint of the bruises at his hip bones, and you couldn’t help but giggle at the sight. 

“This isn’t funny!” your mother whined. “You know I don’t like...looking at them. Put on a shirt, please.” 

Freddie frowned, and turned to look at your bare chest. “I’m missing something.” 

Your mother rolled her eyes, and pointed as exaggeratedly as it seemed she could manage. “Those...scars.” 

“Oh, these?” Freddie said, and came back up behind you, wrapping you in a hug, his fingers tracing your scars delicately. “I don’t see anything wrong with them. They’ve healed well, and even if they hadn’t, who cares? Y/N is gorgeous no matter what.” 

She seemed shocked into silence, and picked up her travel bag of toiletries from her suitcase before stomping off into the bathroom. 

“Good start to the day,” you sighed. 

“Could have been worse,” Freddie said, gently kissing your neck before leading you into the kitchen. “Breakfast?” 

“I don’t think I can stomach anything,” you muttered. 

“You should eat something,” Freddie said. “Anything.” 

“Thank you, darling,” you replied. “But I really don’t think I can.” 

He nodded. “Later, maybe. After-” 

The door to the bathroom opened, and he leaned close to you and whispered. “After we’ve dropped her off at a hotel.” 

“Well,” your mother said as she started to fuss through her luggage for a change of clothes. “What are we going to do today?” 

Before either of you could answer, the phone rang. 

Freddie jumped to answer it, only to lean back out of the bedroom as soon as he had. “Y/N, we’re needed. Something quite serious.” 

His tone was worried, but that worry on his face didn’t quite reach his eyes. Something was up. 

He darted back in to finish the call, and was back out a moment later, all in a rush towards your mother. “We’ll need to get ready, straight away. We’ll have just enough time to drop you off at a hotel; there’s one only ten minutes from us.” 

“I-” 

“You understand,” he interrupted her. “Tour preparation problems, the whole thing could be shot if we don’t get over there and help.” 

In her eyes, you could see an argument brewing, but instead she started to rifle though through her clothes, apparently to dress. 

You wanted desperately to ask him exactly what was going on, but knew that to let on that this was at all unusual might break whatever plan was in place. And this had to be a scheme of some sort; you suspected Roger. 

But it worked. She packed in a panicked rush, and let you and Freddie shepherd her out of the flat after you were both dressed and ready yourselves. 

“This is nicer than his apartment,” your mother remarked as you watched Freddie check her in, handing over the money for at least a week-long stay as if it were nothing. 

You had a hundred and one angry responses to that, but held them back. “...I’m just glad you like it, Mum. You’ll be able to rest, figure out if you want to explore the city some while we’re fixing  whatever’s gone wrong.” 

“And then you’ll come back to spend the evening with me,” she said, a fact, not a question or request. 

Before you could reply, Freddie was back. “Here’s your key. You go on and settle in, and of course, you can call us later if you need anything.” 

“Well, actually-” 

“We’ll call you later if you don’t call us, to check up on you,” Freddie said cheerfully as he led you to the door of the hotel. Under his breath, he whispered, “Come on, Y/N, don’t give her another moment, or we’ll never get away!” 

“Do I get to know what’s wrong now?” you asked as you left the hotel, breaking into a light jog to catch up to him as he hailed a cab. 

“You’ll see,” he replied. “But I can tell you where we’re going.” 

“The studio, or some sort of headquarters?” 

He shook his head. “Brian’s.” 

“You know that doesn’t clear this up in the slightest, right?” 

“I know,” he grinned. “But does it matter right now?” 

“You know...it doesn’t,” you found yourself smiling. “It’s a break from her, and that sounds wonderful.”

Edmund Marlcaster rode silently through the dark of the night, the only light being the one from the full moon above him and the only noise was the sound of roofs hitting against the pebbles on the road.

He took a leisure pace, his carriage had suffered an accident on his way to Grovershire a few days ago, and his ribs still felt sore. In fact, if the destination was not so close and the tone of the request was not so urgent, he might had declined.

“Mr Marlcaster,” Theresa had said, on occasion of his father’s wake. “I understand you might not be at your best condition, given all that happened to you those last few days, but my father is becoming impatient about our wedding.”

“Miss Sutton, do you not realize I am burying my father or you simply does not care?!” He asked, on an uncharacteristic harsh tone. She usually tires him, but his response is always cool disinterest.

She, in turn, sighs. “I know, Mr Marlcaster, and I understand. However, it took all of my persuasion to keep him from coming here himself to hand you a demand. If you could only… talk to him, explain that during your closed mourning, it would not be proper for your family to hold a marriage celebration…”

He had to concede that the woman had a point. It was so rare he had to take note of it.

“I cannot travel long distance.” He responded. “I am still unwell from my accident.”

“I understand. That is why I had required of Mr Sinclaire the use of Ledford Park for an evening next week. I am sure I can convince my father to come, and it is not so far as in to be extenuating for you.” She said, and turning into pleading eyes, she continues, “Please, Mr Marlcaster. It is of utmost importance.”

How could he decline such a simple request from his fiancée? To meet her at Ledford Park for an evening. The young man may not care much for Miss Sutton, but he had to admit she was a dotting, loving woman; he owed her at least some deference.

So, he complied. He had the groom saddle him a stable ride and departed through the three-mile road that separated Edgewater from Ledford Park.

Upon arrival, he notes there were three footmen waiting for him at the entrance, what was most unusual. Edmund may not have had many an opportunity to interact with Mr Sinclaire, but he never appeared to be one for such gestures of grandeur.

It must be Miss Sutton’s idea, he dismissed quietly.

As two footmen care for his horse, the third asks to be followed, as his master awaits for him at the study.

When he reaches the room, and the footman disappears, is that he notices it was all a carefully engineered set-up. There were three people inside that room, and neither one of them was Mr Sinclaire or Mr Sutton.

“Good evening, Edmund.” His stepsister greets, smiling wickedly from the chair behind the bureau. “Nice of you to join us.”

“Miss Sutton, what is the meaning of this?!” He barks at his fiancée. “Where is your father?”

The young woman glared in response. “Mind your tongue, Mr Marlcaster! Believe me, I wanted to do much worse. You ought to thank your sister for that deceiving you is the least I am due.”

“Edmund, please.” Miss Daly tries to reason with him, from the right-arm side of her mistress. “Just listen to what Susan has to say. I promise you, it is not something bad.”

What was particularly striking about Briar is that she was not wearing her uniform, but she also did not seemed to be wearing anything a servant might on their holy days. No, instead she wore a royal blue dress, highly embroidered and decorated.

It was so fancy that, if not for the perfect measurements on her figure, she would have swore it was a loan or a donation from Lady Susan.

“It seems it is you I have to blame for this whole spectacle.” He glares, furious, at the natural daughter of his stepfather. “Very well, then. What is that so important that you have to tell me, Miss Beauchamp?”

She smiles like a lioness closing on her prey. “Edmund, please. We are supposed to be family. You can call me Susan.”

“Miss Beauchamp, please.” He growled.

“Very well, as you wish.” She smirked, stood up and walked around the Bureau, in a pensive fashion. “Tell me, Edmund, do you know where the Parana River is located?”

He huffed. “No, and I do not see how that relates to anything.”

“I am getting there, I am getting there.” She smirked and then pointed a map hung on the side of the study. “It is in southern America, between the old colonies of Portugal and Spain, up the estuary of Rio de la Plata.”

Susan walks around the bureau once more and sits back on the chair. “Say, Edmund, would you not mind to take a seat? This would be much easier on both of us.”

As if on cue, and perhaps exactly like that, Miss Daly sat on one of the chairs in front of Susan, while Miss Sutton retained her sneering post on the left corner of the study.

Feeling the tiredness of his ribcage, he begrudgingly complied with a chair next to Briar.

“As I was saying, some nine hundred miles from the mouth of Rio de la Plata, up the Parana River, lays a small village named Encarnación, at the Intendancy of Paraguay. Lovely place, I am told.” She smirked once again, probably out of her own inner joke. “A few years back, I have you hear, their ruler decided to outlaw marriages between any two locally-born Whites. Their men often marry Indians. Isn’t this so very curious?”

“Very.” He grunts. “Again, what does any of this have to do with any of us being here?”

“You see, Edmund, my mother and I were not completely destitute, she could amass some savings out of a lifetime of work. That, coupled with a generous loan from Mr Sinclaire, was just enough to buy a sizeable chunk of land, just outside Encarnación.”

“I see. Are you sailing to the New World, then?” He questions, a tone of hope on his voice.

“Not really.” She responds. “You see, I never hated you. If anything, I pitied you. A mother who did not care for you, a stepfather who would take more to a daughter he never seen before than the son he raised from age five. The only person who loved you, and whom you loved in return, was dead and buried.

“Furthermore, you have no tact for business or administration. You were positively lost with the legers at Edgewater under the watchful eye of the Earl, now that you are alone, you would absolutely wreck the books. And if you did think I would not notice your infatuation with my maid, you are more naïve than I thought.”

Briar chooses that moment to interlock her fingers on his and to smile kindly at him.

“Given our situation regarding the Earl’s last will, and your mother’s delusions, I am here to offer you a way out, so to speak.” She opens a drawer and fetches a few papers. “There is a ship that sails from Liverpool in a fortnight, headed towards Buenos Aires. From there, it is a three-day journey upstream to Encarnación.”

“Susan wants you to leave.” Theresa blurts out, and, under the intense glare of the aforementioned woman, retracts with a, “Pardon me.”

“While I would not put it in quite those terms, yes.” A pause for effect. “I do believe it is mutually beneficial for you to immigrate to Paraguay.”

He looks at the woman dispassionately and then chuckles loudly. “Are you insane, woman?”

“Edmund, please.” Briar holds his hand tightly. “Think carefully. More than once you complained to me your unwillingness to inherit Edgewater. Lady Susan is offering you a way to back off from it, and still have a comfortable lifestyle.”

“Yes, but in Paraguay.” He stresses the word, as if it is poisonous. “How can I trust that this is not a plot to take me away from the country long enough to usurp Edgewater from under me?”

For the disdain for the land, Briar takes her hand away, as if terribly hurt. Edmund notices it, but does not understand why.

“Well, Edmund, I chose Paraguay because it was the most suitable place for you and Miss Daly to live together as a lawfully-wedded couple. There would be no man to bat an eye to it there, of this, I am certain. In here, though…” She trails off.

“The British are harsh with those of different skin colours, and even more so of those who collude with them. If you doubt me, I can have Mr Harper to come here and attest to it. However, if you so desire, I am sure we can find something here in England to your tastes.”

Such a statement made the grinds on his mind to swirl. Edmund did not think about the complications arising from Briar’s skin tone. He was still stuck on those related to her position as a maid and his status as an engaged man.

Furthermore, while he did feel a great deal more strongly about Briar than he did for Miss Sutton, or any other woman, for that matter, he was still unsure about whether he wishes to actually marry her.

“As for whether you can trust me, I am willing to make a concession. The current owner of the estate I am proposing is a business associate of mine, a Frenchman who lived in Paraguay for many years.” She continues, off-handedly. “He has agreed to guide you through your journey from Buenos Aires, to show you the estate. You need only to sign your claim to Edgewater to me if it is all to your liking.”

“What about my mother?” He asks. Wretched or not, he still had a duty towards the woman.

Susan shrugs. “I do not care what you do with her. Leave her here, send for her after you settle, take her with you in the ship. Just be certain she will have no home with me.”

It was to be expected, he considered, seeing how strained is the relationship between his mother, his step-grandmother and his stepsister.

Despite Susan’s assurances, however, he was still very insecure about it all.

“That being said, the ship goes off in fourteen days. While my offer leaves with it, I am sure you can afford a few days to think about it, dear brother of mine.” Susan says, detecting the doubt on his features. “The farmstead is not attached to a marriage to Miss Daly, as well, though I believe it to be in good taste, considering your night-time activities.”

“Very well.” Edmund breathes out. “I will consider your offer.”

The brunette nods. “It is all correct. Miss Daly will be awaiting for you with your tickets and the name of my associate at Ranelagh Place in Liverpool. You needn’t to speak to me about it any further, but I am willing to respond to any further doubts you have. Miss Daly shall relate to me whether you made the deadline or not.

“There is one thing I ask of you, and it is of utmost importance. Do not speak to your mother about my offer. I am trusting you, but I do not trust Henrietta.” Susan glares at the mention of the name. “If I know you consulted with her, I will be interpreting it as a refusal of my generosity.”

“Sure, seems reasonable.” He agreed.

“The major domo shall show you out.” The woman points to the door and he left with no further words.

Later that night, when Briar and Theresa had already left for Liverpool, Susan sat alone at the study with the master of the house.

“Do you think Mr Marlcaster will take it?” Ernest comments, thoughtful. “The deal, I mean.”

Susan hums her affirmative. “I suppose he will. He desires a fight for Edgewater just about as much as I do. He knows he has no talent for administering an estate of such nature, and he has been blessed with the lack of desire for it as well. The Paraguayan farm I offer him is much more manageable.”

The esquire smiles. “In any case, it was generous of you to offer.”

“Eh.” She shrugs. “I know how much value Edgewater holds, monetary and emotionally-wise. If a few hundred pounds and the loss of a handmaid is enough to keep it, then I say it was mighty cheap.”

...is this ironic? Do you think?...

It’s 5.37am and someone’s alarm is going off. Too early to get up without being groggy all day and shattered by 8pm. Too late to go back to sleep. So it’s blog time...

I’ve got a few gems to share. I’ll tell you about our little supermarket visit another day. It involves me saying to the kids ‘you can go find yourself something to eat in the park if you would like’. One came back with a Dairylea Lunchables. Fair enough. The other came back with a chilled twelve inch pepperoni pizza. Couldn’t quite eat it in the park (I’m good but not that good), but he pretty much demolished it all as soon as it hit his plate for tea.

Anyway, irony. I have a nerve in my face that can play up, and when it does so, it hurts. It’s pretty angry with me at the minute. It’s also my own fault because I was anxious (still am I guess) about the kids returning to school. When I worry I gnaw on my gum, grind my teeth and my jaw gets really tense. So it’s kinda the perfect storm. Why is it that if we cut ourselves we don’t feel the need to keep prodding the wound to see if it’s still there, and check if it still hurts. But with mouth/tooth pain, we feel the need to explore with our tongue every five minutes. So I stuck my tongue in the drop zone of pain and had to hold on to the kitchen worktop because it knocked me backwards. I’m not going to keep banging on, but it hurt too badly for tears. 

Don��t worry. Help is on the way. And I also have my medicine. 

Hang on. Need to put the kettle on again. 5.37am start, remember. The alarm’s still going of, by the way.  Brrrrriiiiiing briiiiinnnnnggggg briiinnnnnnggg. At least I think it’s still going, and it’s not just stuck in my head like Stressed Out by Twenty One Pilots. I wake up at night with that playing in me.

Right, so, yes, I have medicine for this nerve issue. Which, of course, I don’t like to take. But this was getting serious. So I opened my little medicine cupboard and located my meds. And that was when the packaging bit me.

There was blood. I had cut my thumb on the packaging of the tablets that make things not hurt anymore. The thing that takes away the pain had caused me pain. I am typing this with an animal themed plaster around my thumb. But my face doesn’t hurt. 

Is that ironic? Do you think?

Can I also add at this point I’m using a good quality mouthwash just in case, and am wondering, at which point am I able to taste anything other that mouthwash?

Still with me? Here’s another ironic situation. It involves this old boy.

Wook at the fwuffy wickle puppy dog. 

A few months ago we noticed our four-legged friend was charging around the garden on, erm, three legs. We ran out to him, checked his leg, and he just stood there and let us. Nothing seemed to hurt him, so we let Otis hobble on his merry way and crossed our fingers really tightly that he’d just landed on it funny as he tore around the grounds. 

Happily, the situation resolved itself, and normal service was resumed.

But I still mentioned it to the vet when Otis had his annual MOT and service. 

The vet checked Otis over and suggested a joint supplement would help him out. He also told us that he would usually recommend weight loss, but that wasn’t necessary in Otis’ case. 

Well, has there ever been a prouder puppy dog? He jumped into his travel box in the boot more sprightly than ever before, and reminded us all the way home that he was a jolly good weight for a Labrador. He’d probably start going on about it again now, but he’s fast asleep. At least someone can sleep through this alarm which, FYI, is still whirring away.

Off we trundled to the pet shop to buy some finest oil for doggy joints. 

Tea time rolls around. We get out his Labrador specific kibble, mix in a drizzle of this oil and set it down. Big wet nose dives straight in and demolishes the lot at speed. His second human comes home. Otis starts licking his lips. Human assumes dog has not been fed, gets out his Labrador specific kibble, mixes in a drizzle of oil and sets it down. Dog gobbles it up in record time. Returns to first human licking his lips. I am forgetful. ‘Have I not fed you?’ I ask. He’s not forthcoming with an answer, but wanders to his bowl. You see where this is going. 

Otis is quite unusual for a Lab, in that he won’t always eat his food straight away, or even at all. He is sometimes quite happy to have his breakfast in the middle of the afternoon, and his tea (very noisily) in the middle of the night. It’s our fault, I guess, for leaving it out when he was a puppy. He got used to eating whenever he fancied. 

So, essentially, Otis retained his trim form by fussy eating, charging three/four legged around the garden, and by daily walkies as far as he fancied. 

Now he cannot get his meals in him fast enough because he loves his oil for his doggy joints. So he’s probably going to put on weight. Which will not help his joints. 

Now isn’t that irony? Have I got that concept correct?

I’ll wind this up in a sec, stay with me here. 

The obvious answer would be to let him go on longer walks. But this eats into my time, and means my runs can’t really get any longer. This is unfortunate because a) I have a half marathon coming up, and b) I need to run further and faster because I, myself, have four excess pounds of weight that I need to shift but cannot. It is going nowhere people. This is just one massively vicious circle, no? 

Ahhh, 7am. You know what? I think that alarm may have stopped....
