Do you have any advice for someone looking to get into video editing or just try and figure it out? It’s always seemed kinda fun to me, and I want to know if there’s any beginners resources you have :3

In terms of beginner's software, I'm not sure what's out there now. I got my start on Windows Movie Maker, which is now, unfortunately, discontinued, with a much shittier version available to Windows users.

I do know there are a lot of free apps on Mobile, and a quick YouTube or engine search (Google or Firefox) for free software should get you some options.

From there, clear editing advice is all gonna come down to which software you choose to go with, but I do have a few pointers that apply to most, if not all editing to get you started!

1) Audio levels, if you can view them, should stay in the green and yellow zones. Not all software has this option, but some will show you how loud a particular bit of audio is at any given time, represented with several green rectangles, one or two yellow, and a red. If the audio is in the red, that means it's "peaking" and will be too loud.

The reason you wanna look at the visual rather than listen by ear is so that it sounds the same on any device. If you set it depending on how loud you laptop/phone is, then it might be too loud or too soft when you export the final video.

2) If you can, use multiple tracks to edit! Tracks are the lines you drag and drop videos/pictures and audio in. Unless the software only supports one track for each (or even a combined track for both), you can stack clips on top of each other to make timing cuts easier, help with synchronizing with audio, and so much more.

3) If you have the audio and the visuals separated onto two tracks, see if you can't find some kind of tell to make sure they are synced. In films, this is what the clapper is for, the clapper being the board with the striped design on top that they let fall, which makes that loud SMACK! sound before the action starts. It's to help with editing! 🎬

You don't necessarily need a clapper, as something like a snap of the fingers, clap, hit, ect, ANYTHING that makes a loud, definitive noise will suit this purpose. As long as the noise lines up with the frame where contact is made, it'll be synced.

4) Have all your shots laid out in front of you. This is for films moreso than YouTube videos, but if you need to cut between multiple shots, knowing what each of them are beforehand (and which takes you're keeping) is essential to making editing go a lot smoother. I've seen editors who will print out each scene and each shot WITHIN that scene, paste that on their wall, and reference that while editing. That was back in the '70s though, so you may not need to go THAT far, but it never hurts either.

5) If you can, have someone taking notes as you film. This is especially useful for filmmaking. For each shot, have someone sit with the director and write down how each take went-what lines got fumbled, when cut was called early, when takes are good, ECT. This helps GREATLY in editing and will make life SO much easier.

6) Just edit, edit, edit. Doing lots of projects is the one sure-fire way to get good at it. Any software will work to start, but once you know you wanna take it up a notch, already having prior experience will help you get settled in with all the new, flashy features a lot easier.

7) DONT USE ADOBE PRODUCTS. I DONT CARE IF THEYRE "INDUSTRY STANDARD," THEYRE EXPENSIVE AND BAD AND NOT WORTH IT. I personally use Filmora 9, but I've also used Sony Vegas, which is also good. There are other options, don't be fooled.

my process for making edits usually looks something like this:

scroll through my spotify playlists to find a song that has a verse/chorus i think i can use for an edit

screenrecord,,,, so many matches/interviews/backstage segments,,, (i think i have over 3 hours of content screen recorded on my phone >_<)

put all of this in to capcut! it's a free app and if you have a tiktok account you can pair them and use your saved audios for your edits!!

move the videos around, make cuts in them, adjusting exposure, contrast, etc.

adding text/transitions/filters!

it usually takes me about 3 hours on average to make an edit, but the screenrecording and finding songs can take just as long hahahdhdhs

there are a lot of tutorials on yt and tiktok for making edits in capcut! it's much easier imo than some of the payed editing softwares

if we get in to the technical stuff i make sure than my phone is already horizontal before i start screen recording, i don't know if its a samsung thing or if all phones do this but if you start screen recordning while your phone is vertical the video will just be really small and that is a bitch to edit (the videos quality will be HORRENDOUS). i also record ALL videos with sound (not mic), you never know when you might need a sound clip from a specific match! when im done with my edit i export it in 1080p and 30 or 50fps (depending on if i have a lot of quick transitions or not). dont bother with 2k/4k, tumblr doesnt seem to be able to handle that lmao. i also always (try to remember to) use a watermark, a lot of people steal edits (specifically on tiktok). on tumblr i have almost all of my edits in a 4:3 format (easiest format to use imo when importing screen recordings since they are often in a 16:9, while not making the video super slim), while on tiktok i used either 1:1 or 9:16!

hope this is somewhat helpful to anyone wanting to start editing!! its really fun (although it has rotted my brain a bit since everytime i hear a song now i make an edit in my head...)! capcut really is a good app for beginner editors aswell, it has a lot of features that are pretty easy to get a hang of!

Okay but seriously your edits are such an inspiration to me. Like I see them and I’m like holy shit I want to do that. The thing is I’m not an artist, so it makes it scary to think about just jumping into doing edits without any art skills. Or photoshop skills.

tbh making edits is such a good way to learn and experiment with photoshop (or any other drawing/editing software really) i'd say its perfect for beginners, because you already have a base (that being your screenshot) and its just, perfect for practice, whether you are an artist or not. also everyone starts skill-less so dont be afraid to jump into it without knowing a thing. i started posting in 2018 (back on gunthermunch the 1st) without knowing NOTHING about photoshop i just kept editing and learning constantly.

so yeah, dont be afraid to start learning, no one starts doing perfect immaculate stuff i swear!

Of course!! I am in the same situation as you actually. I used to draw a lot in middle school (2010-2012) but my depression worsened during high school and in college, I’d only draw as a distraction, never seeking to study or improve. I decided to get back this year, since I decided drawing was the only thing I could see myself doing professionally. I felt very lost, because how do you get back? How do you know what’s your actual, current, art skill? What are your weaknesses? Your strong points?

Gesture Gesture drawing is a method of capturing figures in exaggerated poses, usually drawn quickly. Digital Media Digital art is how everyone’s been doing art these days. It doesn’t matter if you’re doing with your phone or your computer. I don’t do art on my phone, I know the most used app is mediabang for android and procreate for apple, and I think anyone who is able to do art with their finger is very skilled. If you are like me and prefer doing art on your computer, you probably have your tablet. If not, well you should have. Not having a tablet is not an option if you want to get better at art ^^’ Best tablet for beginners in 2020. Or you can just buy an old used one, if it still works, and you are a beginner, a small intuos is all you need. When talking about softwares, the three big ones I see people using are: Photoshop, Clip Paint Studio and Paint Tool Sai. The best one is CPS, but I find Sai easier to navigate, but CPS is extremely complete and I hope to be able to master it someday. CPS Tutorials. I don’t have much to say about photoshop, people use it mostly because they’ve been using it forever lol I divide my digital painting process in steps: Sketch/Lineart/Color Blocking/Shading/Blending/Color correction. Sketch is the basics, draw your idea. Lineart is to clean your sketch. Color Blocking is to color your drawing one color, so it’s easier to work in it. Shading is to understand where the lighting sources are coming from and apply them. Blending is to blend the colors of your drawing with brushes. Color correction is when I use filters of hue/saturation and others to make the drawing more appealing. Hi, saw your very helpful reblog with free adobe replacement programs and i just thought you might be able to help me with a simular problem. I work just fine with iMovie for video editing, but i dont have apple anymore..I have tried and failed to find a replacement for it for windows...The free ones ive tried cant handle speeding up long clips (for making speedpaints) which is the one thing i need to do pretty much (and picture overlays). Maybe you or someone seeing this could help? :)

Hi! I hope that post was helpful to you but the real credit goes to this twitter and the original tumblr poster, I just took some time to write down the image and locate the links. I have had similar problems with recording videos, so I figured out I could give you a hand and share the software I know. If you are still trying to find other options, let me know and I’ll do some more digging, but those are the most popular tools around for free. There are a few others that I have tried, but they either weren’t very intuitive, or couldn’t handle big videos, or I had to use third-party software to convert the video formats I wanted to use. I also ommited all the paid ones, like Vegas and Adobe Premiere.

Windows Movie Maker is usually the first one people try but, unfortunately, have been discontinued. It is very easy to use. You can download it here, here or here (all verified).

Windows comes with a replacement called Video Editor, if you search that term on your windows search bar you’ll find it. You don’t need to download or install anything.

Movavi Video Editor comes in two flavors: the free version and the plus. I have recently bought a license for the plus version via steam and I have been enjoying it a lot! You can download the free version here. And this is the link for the steam version.

Openshot is considered one the best video editor for beginners and is also cross-platform and open source, meaning it is 100% free. Download here. 

Lightworks is also a very good video editor, one of the most traditional ones available and was used in some blockbusters too! Download here . It has an optional pro version

Shotcut is a very powerful tool as well, with many resources out of the bat. Download here

Davinci Resolve was one of the software in the original post and is still a very versatile editor. Download here.

How did you get into making music... and do you have any tips on starting out

i started out bc back in 2018 (i think. could have started earlier too) i was working on a visual novel which i lost interest in over time but i did end up making some music for it after looking up how to use the first free daw i could find which was lmms (i would recommend it for beginners bc it is very easy to work with, i just personally have had a LOT of issues with it lately to the point where i havent been able to use it at all so im looking for something else rn). 

i already had a ton of experience with music, im a classically trained guitarist, i played very seriously from like age 8 to 16/17, i kind of stopped playing as much afterwards (kind of abrubtly, will not get into it on here) but like i Know music, i have played with other people plenty of times too and id like to think i have a good sense for it so that definitely helped for me personally.

so when i got into producing at first i was basically making background music but i was very inspired by the electronic artists i was getting into at the time too so it ended up somewhere in between

i like watched a lot of youtube tutorials and messed around w the software and stuff until i just figured out how to do what i wanted to do and then when i gave up on the project i kinda stopped doing music for a while.

then last year i really wanted to get back into music, i downloaded lmms again, watched a few more videos, and went back to making music but much louder stuff this time. which is still the wave im on rn, im just currently moving towards a different daw (probably going w fl studio, got an unexpected extra student this month so might even buy a legal copy bc i tend to mess up pirating LOL) 

as for tips definitely dont underestimate how many videos you can find online explaining stuff for basically any daw (and some lessons can be used for all of them), also play around with stuff in the software, even if you dont think you’ll need it if you find out how it works you’ll realize there are uses for it that would help you you didnt even think of ^-^ also have fun, making any type of art is supposed to be fun for you

All About RP Icons For Beginners by Birdy

Hi OP, I’m not sure how experienced you are with all the nonsense surrounding the making and using of RP icons, so I’m gonna come at it as though you don’t have any experience with it at all and I’m sorry if that’s too simplified for you, but also if I’m gonna write many paragraphs about one topic I may as well make it accessible for as many people as possible ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This post goes into what tools are out there for the popular methods of finding/making RP icons in the first half and my personal methodology for choosing and using them in my RP for the second half. This is a very surface level answer to the question and is not meant to be an in depth tutorial for the more labor intensive aspects of the process, but if you guys want more information and can’t find it elsewhere, please ask and I'll know what I should be talking about next. 

Also I’m also contractually obligated to mention to the masses that I do take commissions both for the drawing of RP icons and the service of capping, cutting, recoloring, and framing canon icons. Sometimes I even post batches of canon character icons for free on this blog so like,,,,, hit me up if you want. But!! You don’t need me, you can absolutely do all of it yourself!!  I go into the broad strokes below.

Question 1: “How do you get icons?” 

This is kind of a broad question and the answer depends on what your needs are. The right answer for you is gonna live in one of two camps 

Find some that already exist that are free to use

Make them yourself / commission somebody else to make them for you. 

What you'll choose is gonna depend a lot on your character first and foremost.  The big determining factor in most cases is whether or not the face you want has been in anything you can take pictures of. 

If you have a canon character who exists in visible media--

--you're in luck! The chances of you finding some resources that exist already is higher when you have a canon character who is in at least a few pieces of media. OP asked about Pearl from Steven Universe, and she's a great example of a character with a lot of resources. Searching for rp icons of a popular character will often yield packs of icons on Tumblr, Dreamwidth, Livejournal, etc. Most of these will be completely free to use or have very reasonable conditions for use (like credit the person who made them for example.)  It's often a good first step to see what preexisting resources are available to you even if you still plan on making your own icons. 

If you have an OC or a character that's not all that popular--

--you're gonna fall into the second camp. If you want icons, you have to have them made. So what are your options?

Help! My character appears in no media! What are my options?

If your character appears in no media you're in a tough spot. Different people approach this problem in different ways. 

Face Claims

One option you have is to choose a face claim to represent your character. In roleplay a face claim or ‘FC’ is a person or character whose appearance you use for the physical description of your character. I personally am not big on doing this, I prefer drawn icons and I tend to RP as animated characters, but some people really like using celebrities and stuff to represent their characters.  When I was playing Angus McDonald he hadn't appeared in any visual media yet, so I sometimes used Bryce Clyde Jenkins as the face claim for certain types of threads.  

If you're somebody who likes to use face claims there are loads of resources out there for finding the perfect one, including here on tumblr. Try searching up RP Faceclaim Directory and playing around with some of the ones that pop up.

DIY RP Icons

The other option you have is to create those icons from scratch. Draw them yourself based on icons you like or commission an artist to draw some for you.   If you can't draw yourself, I've seen some people get really creative with this. Some people create their character in the sims, dollmakers, or their favorite RPG and then take screenshots of that to use for icons.  There's also no law that says every icon you use has to be your character's face. When I was writing a trashy mermaid AU I got a lot of mileage out of icons that depicted harbor and oceanic scenes with no actual faces. Get creative, go nuts, have fun.

Icons Aren’t That Important

The other thing to remember that icons are not a must in many RP circles. It's perfectly possible to have a great time and write cool stuff without any pictures at all. Depending on your platform of choice there are probably also other interesting ways you can make your posts unique to you by formatting the text or using symbols or emojis or otherwise denoting your personal style in text.

Help! My character appears in lots of media! How do I make icons?

Again, there are a million and one answers to this question and it really depends on what tools are available to you and what your preferences are. This section is not a tutorial but it will outline some of the options you can look into.

The icon making process is typically in 2 stages-- stage 1: get all your images of your character, and stage 2: edit all of those images into icons.  

If you have access to the source material, any version of Photoshop, and software that automates the collection screencaps from video (KM Player, VLC, etc) you're pretty much gucci. You're gonna have no problem getting loads of nice icons in a reasonably short amount of time and there are a million different tutorials on how to use those things whichever way you prefer. 

If you don't have access to those things you still have options. 

You can still screencap things manually, and you can screencap in batches by holding down the windows key and pressing PrtSc any time you want to save an image. They should be saving to >pictures>screenshots unless you’ve set things up differently. It’s a good way to take a lot of screenshots without stopping in between.

( EDIT / UPDATE: to say that if you use automation for taking screencaps remember to turn that shit off when you’re not using because it oh mylanta it WILL continue to take images without you realizing. Figured out where all my disk space has been going with this rookie mistake, thanks OP)

Additionally, PhotoScape X is a really great little tool for windows and mac that I've never seen anybody talk about, but I use it sometimes and it's totally free with the exception of a few paid features I’ve never once needed or wanted. This program is not as efficient as using Photoshop but it has presets for cropping images easily as well as batch editing options for some basic borders and color retouching.  While it’s not as powerful as Photoshop, you can get a lot done with it reasonably quickly compared to other choices. You can also take and edit snips of anything on your screen with it, which is really really useful if you don’t have access to the video or image files you would need on your hard drive for other version of this process.  The program looks like this:

Also, not to be like a minimalist about it, but you can also just fucken use Microsoft Paint or whatever you have. Like, whatever, there’s no law. You graphics dont have to be comlpex or deep fried. Half of my icons have been made or edited in paint at some point. It wont be as fast as some of these other methods but a lot of us aren't out here making icons in batches of 100 at a time. 

Anything that you can use to make smallish images of your characters face will work to make icons.

Question 2: “How do you make your icons ‘work’ in posts?”

I'm a little confused on what you mean by "make them work" so I'm gonna cover my bases here. I'm assuming what you're getting at is a sort of sense of cohesion in the icons I use, or having the "right" expression for the scene I'm writing. Either that or them not stretching and looking weird thanks to tumblr. I’ll get to both of those.

And before I go into my own rationale for icon choices I feel I should point out that a lot of people who aren't me do successfully manufacture cohesion out of their images by doing fun stylistic things like recoloring their images all the same way or putting cute borders and stuff around them or making them fun shapes, and that's totally something you can learn how to do if it interests you.  I do this for icons commissioned by other people and I’m not against talking about how to do those things, but I don’t really bother with them for my own icons all that much. That stuff is all fun and it’s a neat thing you could get into that can make your icons all look really nice together.

BUT ANYWAY --

Since the character you asked about is Pearl, I’m going to focus on her. Nearly all of my Pearl icons are completely unedited and a lot of the credit I would have to give regarding icon quality goes to Pearl herself and the consistently good lighting that the show uses. I don’t have a huge need for editing or color retouching beyond making memes or whatever other goofy things I might be getting up to. Pearl is extremely expressive compared to other characters I have written and since she's in nearly every episode, I've managed to collect…

...oh god, that’s too many icons.

You can use any size you want for RP icons but the most common is 100x100 or 150x150 pixels.  Any smaller than that and the image gets to be difficult to read and work with in my opinion. That doesn’t stop people, of course, but I’m elderly and need glasses now, so no tiny icons for me.  On that note, I rarely see RP icons larger than 300x300. Any larger than that it tends to get bulky and be in the way of other people’s comfortable internet browsing experience, especially on mobile.  Of course, these are just my suggestions. What you choose will ultimately be up to you, but somewhere in that 100 to 300 px range is pretty safe.
