The holidays have passed so it's time to yap critically about Veilguard some more.
So. I like to project themes and meanings on Dragon Age stories that weren't even necessarily intentionally put there by the writers. And how well Dragon Age used to lend itself to that favorite pastime of mine, was, I think, one of its main strengths.
Hear me out.
Dragon Age is a game, and a game is not a book. A Dragon Age narrative is not done being written until you the player play through it and fill in the blanks. And you don't just play a role, as in define the player character and make choices for them. Through the interplay between your character and the world, trough the influence you have on the world and the people in it, you pick out the themes and meanings that your very own Dragon Age narrative explores and expresses.
It used to be a damn fantasy writer simulator. No wonder it inspired so much creativity.
Some of it was intentional, and some, probably, not. Some, but far from all of it was due to the infamous Dragon Age Grey Morality(TM).
(Where that Grey Morality(TM) was executed well, and where not is a separate conversation, and that conversation has very much been had, extensively, over the past ten years. I'm not getting into that here.)
Most of this effect, however, relied on the simple fact that Dragon Age never presumed to tell you what the correct themes and meanings of a Dragon Age story were. (Yes, you could arrive at some really unfortunate themes and meanings with the story building blocks given to you, yes, I know. But you never had to.)
You were asked questions (Yes, some of them were stupid questions). But if you were in any way interested in thinking about the messy source material presented to you, you immediately arrived at questions even deeper than the writers ever intended to ask, and weren't some of them just fascinating.
Veilguard, I feel, almost stopped asking questions. Worse, when it does try to ask them, it tells you what the answers are supposed mean. Literally. In a tooltip (!) in the interface (!!). There's a correct way to read Dragon Age now, somehow.
I'd say the most egregious example of this shift is Rook's unquestionable heroism.
We, Dragon Age and I, used to ponder the meaning of being celebrated as the hero, regardless of what kind of person you really were. Or the futility of trying to be the hero when all the societal systems work against you. Or the terror of being the hero, when you're suddenly forced to become a whole societal system yourself. My Dragon Age protagonists had a really sad and shitty time being protagonists. 'Twas good for their souls.
Enter Veilguard and Rook.
You start the game and you're introduced to Rook, the game's hero. You are repeatedly reassured that you're the hero, and Were Chosen For Reason. You can attempt to express doubt about maybe having made the situation worse, and you're immediately assured by your companions that you shouldn't. "You got this Rook", the game repeatedly says. (It's thankless work, fixing the world, Solas shares, but Solas is from a different game and probably didn't get the memo.) Everyone is actually super thankful to Rook, even the people you left to be blighted, you're a universally good influence, after all, and you couldn't be two places at once, any reasonable person understands. You're doing your best. Don't you worry, your best will be enough.
Oh, and just in case you're still having doubts, Rook, all your antagonists are mindless and/or power-hungry fools, and, like, elfy Thanos. It is objectively correct to oppose them. By doing so you're not just saving people but helping the world move past the violence of the past and into a brighter safer future.
Honestly, I don't think I have ever played a game that went to such lengths to assure you you're the Good Guy here. I've never played Marvel games though, are they like that? Is this why…
This is getting too long. So I'll sum it up as best I can.
Veilguard isn't juvenile in meaning, not really. In tone, yes, in meaning, for the most part, no. It does tackle some heavy stuff. But Veilguard knows what exactly it means to say and it will beat you over the head with its message, until you know it too.
And that, to me, for a Dragon Age story, is just sad.

Last Binderary book is DONE!!!! This is the incredible Maybe sprout wings, by @moorishflower.
This post is going to be a doozy, so gonna just skip straight to the cut!
INTERIOR
INTRODUCTION
I really wanted to model this bind after my own copy of the Odyssey, (which is all highlighted and bookmarked and annotated to hell from my Great Text courses in undergrad ehe, so this bind was such a fun trip down memory lane!). But beyond just the cover/general aesthetic, I also wanted to give the book a similar feel to these kinds of editions of classics--there's usually an introduction, translation notes, and other supplementary materials, right? Like, a physical manifestation of the work of many, many people, all having conversations with one another across time and space.
So that's what I did! I wrote a short introduction (I will also probably post it to my AO3/my blog as well, in the name of preservation etc. etc.) and began reaching out to folks in the fandom who I knew had created art and meta for the fic. The result? 18k words of analysis, comments, and meta, and nearly twenty pages of art!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this is what I love most about this bind, I think! This book is the work of several people--truly a collaborative work by the fandom--all of whom I will now be shamelessly calling out below :D
CHAPTER HEADER ART
First and foremost, this book would not be what it is without the gorgeous header art by @fancy-rock-dove! Thank you so much Dove for letting include your work, and for being so supportive and kind these past few weeks about this bind <3 You in particular have contributed so much to this book (which I will be getting more into in the next section ehe), and I'm so psyched I get to hold your art and words, too!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
NOTES ON THE TEXT
This section was divided into four parts: Asks and Answers, Meta, Selected Comments, and Chapter Heading Art: Process
Tumblr media
For Asks and Answers, I trawled Heather's blog for meta she had written in response to questions and other meta about the fic. Asks came from @fancy-rock-dove, @quillingwords, @kulapti, and myself! (I THINK I got all of them--tumblr's search function is finnicky even on its best days, so so sorry if I missed something T_T) I first got hooked into reading this fic because of one of these asks, so I'm very fond of this section in particular :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For Meta, I included two wonderful essays written by @pastrypuppy (also known as @kulapti) about Hob as an author figure and the Disrupted Fisher King narrative in MSW. Her analyses were so fascinating and I just had to include them in the book! (And thank you as well for your permission, friend!) (also hello fellow Renegade comrade 🫡)
Tumblr media
For Selected Comments, I owe everything to (once again :3) @fancy-rock-dove, whose insights are the epitome of transformative fandom at work. I'd look for their comments after I read every chapter to see what their takes were on this or that element of the story, and every single time I would go "!!!!! I didn't even realize!!!" or "OOOOOOOH I hadn't thought of that!!" It was like being in a lecture hall and always whipping your head around when one of your classmates raised their hand, because you knew they were going to say something fascinating that you hadn't considered before.
Aside from one of my own comments, Dove's comments make up the entirety of this section (for which I owe you my life--your long-form responses to fics are a gift to this world) but GOSH was it also so much fun going through the comments section while typesetting and seeing all the keyboard smashing, yelling, and crying from the other commenters. Communal nature of storytelling and ongoing meaning-making of fanfiction, babey!
Tumblr media
And finally for Chapter Heading Art: Process: once again Dove coming in clutch with some wonderful insights into the design of each of the chapter heading art pieces! This kind of stuff is honestly my favorite: meta about art for a fic which is, in turn, a transformation of an existing story (not even to mention that The Sandman is its own kind of fanfiction of existing mythologies and histories)--I just!! Think it's all really, really neat :'D (for more coherent/polished thoughts on this pls see my introduction asjdfkls)
Tumblr media
ART
The art gallery!!! A million thanks to @fishfingersandscarves, @honeyseller, @jazzpsych, @doctor-rainbowfoxey, and (HI AGAIN DOVE) @fancy-rock-dove for granting me permission to include all of your beautiful pieces!
As usual for artworks in my binds, I printed each piece out on specialty photo paper to really make the colors pop, then sewed each page separately to the text block! Behold, everyone's beautiful beautiful pieces!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The art gallery also satisfies the certain "oooh shiny" part of my brain that always activates when I see pictures in a book, so am also very fond of this section :3
CONSTRUCTION
And now on to the nitty gritty stuff! I used the German Bradel binding technique again, my second time using it. Even though it's more complicated than the case bind, I really love how it gives you the full board space for the cover designs (~it's free real estate~). Keep it a secret but I kiiiiiiind of made a small goof in the last few steps (I did the turn-ins a step too early and so had to paste an extra sheet of cardstock to secure the spine to the boards, whoopsie), but it's a pretty small difference, aesthetically speaking, so it wasn't the end of the world XD
Edges are once again fake gilded, but this time I tried something new with the colors! I did two layers of acrylic paint--one watered down shade of red for the base, then one metallic gold on top of that. I really like the red/gold effect! I'll have to keep experimenting with this kind of layering:
Tumblr media
ALSO. Y'ALL! I think I'm finally getting the hang of endbands!!! Many thanks to the folks at Renegade who hosted all the endband workshops last month--I'm still working through them, but even the few sessions I've seen have been TREMENDOUSLY helpful. I learned that tension is Very Important, as well as thread thickness, so I tried doubling my thread and keeping a Very Close Eye on how I was holding the threads while doing the beads. And behold! I still have a ways to go (and one day I would LOVE to do the fancier designs), but I'm v happy with the progress I've made so far!
Tumblr media
And finally the covers!! ARCHIVAL MOD PODGE MY BELOVED. I printed on the same matte presentation paper that I used for the art, then did several coats of archival matte mod podge + a pass of gloss mod podge over the title strip to make it ~shiny~. Then once those had dried and I'd adhered them to the boards, I sprayed two layers of matte clear acrylic sealer (also mod podge!) to finish it off. I had some issues with the paper tearing when I handled it before it was fully dry, but luckily the blemishes were small enough that it was easy to do spot corrections with my black acrylic paint. And now I know to be more patient next time LOL
(some non-photoshoot shots that show the shine a little better!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
FINAL THOUGHTS
Tumblr media
I had a lot of thoughts while I was binding this book--about Sandman fandom, about Dreamling fandom, about the Odyssey, about storytelling, about fanbinding, about Binderary, about Renegade, about my friends--but really what came to mind the most was gratitude!
Simply put, I'm so grateful to everyone I've met both in this fandom and throughout the years I've been active online--this is SO fun, y'all. It's so much fun to love stories together--to talk about them, to write them, and of course to bind them! I hope I've adequately conveyed that gratitude.
But of course, this book would not exist without the wonderful words of @moorishflower. Heather, thank you so, SO much for sharing your stories, thoughts, and time with us--it is always a happier, better day when I get an email notif from you and when I see you on my dash. I love your work so much, and I'm so happy I finally get to put it on my shelf! So thank you so much again, for everything <3
and OKAY THAT'S IT FROM ME FOLKS!!!!! Binderary 2023 is officially a wrap! I had SUCH a blast--will probably write up a reflection post on it uhhhh after I take a very long nap ajslkdfjslk _(:3」∠)_
all my love! <3

Now, with the 'Nightmare before Christmas' event fast approaching, how does it feel to know that there's a high chance of your old Oc coming to life? What was his name again? Ah yes, Jinx Skelton I think. Old follower here 👋
Even though I have to be honest I doubt we'll get any new characters this Halloween. I mean wouldn't it be strange for them to release new characters every Halloween? First it was Rollo then Fellow and now again? I doubt it honestly. Besides the thought of seeing a bishounen Jack Skeleton scares me. I love seeing new characters but at times point I'd rather have more information about the mysterious 4-year students.
[Referencing this post!]
Tumblr media
THE WAY I FELT LIKE I GOT SHOT BY SEBEK'S UM WHEN I READ MY OLD OC'S NAME 🤡 A ZILLION WATTS OF LIGHTNING ARE COURSING THROUGH MY VEINS... . ..... .... ......... . .. . ........ . . . .... .. . . .
I think I first came up with Jinx like 4 years ago??? And the last time I drew him was like... 2 years ago?? BUT WOW, IT'S BEEN SO LONG SINCE I'VE THOUGHT ABOUT MY FAVORITE SPOOKY CHILD 😭 I'm so flattered that you remembered him, Anon!! (For those of you without any context, here's a fan art of him as well as my own design!)
adhbadoyqerqwvypnad I'm excited to see what TWST's interpretation of Jack Skellington might be! (I'm sure Yana and team's design would blow mine out of the water, lol) If they end up introducing a twisted!Oogie though, I might just bring Jinx back just to interact with him 👀
I'm not sure if I'm following what you're saying about the possibility of new characters though...? We may have had only Rollo and Fellow so far, but it seems to me that TWST has found a winning formula and an excuse to pump out a new limited SSR card every Halloween meaning more money for them. I don't get why they would backtrack now and do a whole event themed around a Disney property but NOT introduce a new character they can make bank on come next year. The first two Halloween events weren't themed, so it makes sense that no new character was introduced. Because this upcoming one is so blatantly going to be Nightmare Before Christmas-themed, I think it's all but guaranteed that we'll see a new face. adugkvqwodivqdi I JUST WONDER... WILL THE THIRST FOR THE NEW CHARACTER EXCEED THE THIRST OF FELLOWIVES??? Especially considering that the regular Jack Skellington is already a Tumblr sexyman????? Only time will tell...
I understand the anticipation for fourth year student lore, but I don't know that a Halloween event of all things would be good timing to make them relevant? So far, we only know that they temporarily return to campus for cultural fairs, in which NRC demonstrates the fruits of its labor to the general public. The fourth years would probably be better reserved for another kind of event or even later in the main story.

The more I think on it, the more I believe Wild Robot is arguably the perfect Dreamworks' movie for myself.
Roz & Brightbill feeling like outsiders to their respective origins really sells the weight of how truly lost and lonely both are in their pursuit of understanding what to make of it all. Their dynamic being brought together through heartbreaking misfortune is immensely profound. Makes me reflect upon what own my mother went through trying to fit in with her family, but never could. Just as I have always been insecure about trying to figure out my own place, when she brought me into this world and a big family. In retrospect, we both felt "defective" for our own reasons.
Usually, I don't cry often at movies, or anything for that matter, but their internal struggle of acting like a natural mother & son drives a knife through my heart in the best manner. A surreal mirror of my own life struggling to feel okay with being myself. Further reinforcing how much I love my mother went above and beyond to give me a life of happiness, in spite of whatever bumps in the road happened.
Tumblr media
"The accident that killed your family saved you. Funny how life works...?"
The Wild Robot's biggest feat, if not one of many, is managing to make all the denizens of this island not feel insanely mean spirited. It is more so capturing that harsh aspect of nature's morbid atmosphere. In this regard, those chances of Brightbill making it as the runt of that litter were practically nonexistent without Roz's unexpected arrival. He likely would've been either killed by nature's intense elements, a lurking predator of some kind, or end with his biological mother giving up on helping him learn to fly. It served to emphasize nature's survival instincts, in contrast to Roz's evolving compassion for Brightbill. No one else wanted to help the poor kid out because all they saw was dead meat, more or less. Even Fink, despite warming up to Brightbill, wanted to eat him right off the bat after coming across his egg.
Brightbill's weak wings weren't psychically capable in achieving normal flight, much less even a full on migration. However, Roz's determination allowed him to be able to survive from winter, just like the rest of his species. It's the beauty of showing kindness, even to those who may or not like you that can inspire emotional growth. Learning to stay optimistic in an unforgiving environment can bring out the best surprises from places you'd least expect it.
Tumblr media
"This is my migration. And when it is time I promise I will find my way home."
The Wild Robot's heavily endearing lesson about kindness persevering makes its ending feel entirely earned. The animals don't just get along with each other right off the bat. Almost dying from that terrible winter storm was a serious wake up call they can't rely on being by themselves forever. Survival instincts or not, it's about opening yourself up to the possibility of trusting and relying upon genuine emotions. Much like Brightbill's entire character was learning to accept Roz did genuinely care for his well being as his mother. Tragedy may have created their situation, but it doesn't define whatever comes next in building a heartfelt connection.
Honestly, it's why I believe The Wild Robot is among Dreamworks' very finest stories they've animated to life. Taking basic ideas spicing them up to feel more emotionally introspective about ourselves. Hell, I'd probably place at it the very top of my number one spot in my favorite Dreamworks' content. It seriously affected me in ways I didn't expect. A bold statement to be sure, but that alone should be a damn great enough reason, as far as I'm concerned.
A simple story about parenthood can do wonders. Especially when it's executed in this caliber of writing. Chris Sanders and his team are legends in their own making.

edits i made in 2024 ✨
thanks for tagging me krish @i-got-the-feels [x] ♥ am also trying to incorporate the tumblr top ten posts into this bc i don't want to do that as it is, so thank you for tagging me into that antania @riggerbison [x] and zey @fadelsburger [x] ♥
Post your most popular and/or favorite edit/gifset for each month (it’s okay to skip months!)
tagging: @forcebook @thamepo @chezlalune @ruanbaijie @luna-lina @srnileforme @wanderlust-in-my-soul no pressure and if you've done this or something like this already, please send it my way or tag me into the post's replies! i'd love to look at everybody's creations and give them some love :')
JANUARY: morkday + holding hands [x]
Tumblr media
the most popular and tbh my personal favorite was this morkday edit i made based on a quote that is from the damn city of bones (2007) by cassandra clare. i didn't know that back when this quote punched me in the face and made me think about it for a couple of days but i honestly laughed when i finally googled it... worked out very well tho! i love hand symbolism, especially in last twilight, and the golden colors are lovely for them ♥ i also ended up loving the last image in this set even if i first struggled with the composition.
this was my number 1 post on my tumblr top ten.
(also gotta add that it still feels insane that last twilight was still going on in 2024... it feels like it was ages ago. i barely remember most of it anymore, probably bc of the heartbreak and trauma. i'm a changed person in january 2025)
rest of the months under the cut bc i ramble!
FEBRUARY: valentine's day vice versa rewatch [x]
Tumblr media
my best decision for last year was to rewatch both my school president and vice versa during the time before valentine's day. it healed me, held me gently, filled me with love and warmth. am happy that the set i made after that to show love, once again, for the romance show and soulmates couple of all time was both my most popular and personal fave ♥ i love how the set turned out and how the colors work in this. i will forever be thankful to vice versa for its colors and overall brilliance.
this was my number 8 post on my tumblr top ten.
MARCH: 23.5 episode 3 [x]
Tumblr media
it's a close call between several of my 23.5 episode edits but this happens to be the most popular one during this month. i never finished 23.5 which somehow saddens me, but towards the end, i just lost interest, and so this edit series was also left unfinished. i liked the concept tho and loved playing with the colors each week!
tribute to mork methas [x]
Tumblr media
personal favorite cannot be any other edit than this bc i put all my heart into creating it. i am still so angry about what last twilight did to mork as a character; how all his trauma and pain was pushed aside, how the story never gave him the space and time he needed, how on top of all else they managed to butcher this amazing man. i don't even want to look at him in episode 12 bc i cannot recognize mork there. he is no that person, at least not to me. mork my beloved, i wish the writers didn't hate you so much </3
(btw i have this whole explanation/essay written under this post in my drafts. it's mostly me sharing in detail the thought process behind me making this edit and going through the several elements in it. if anyone is curious, i can post it, just holler haha)
APRIL: us / thamepo pilot crossover [x] [x]
Tumblr media
the most popular edit for this month deserves to be the edit i made for the us pilot that was revealed during gmmtv 2024 part 2. i am still very excited to see the show itself and follow their filming journey occasionally on twt. i am just soooo ready to break my heart over the tragic lesbians woven together with strings of comfort, self-discovery, and heart ache.
this was my number 2 post on my tumblr top ten.
Tumblr media
i picked the thamepo sister set as my personal fave bc i cannot separate these two. it was fun to connect them together and switch around the dialogues we hear in these pilots bc they just worked. they had very similar vibes and both talked about somewhat forbidden love. no wonder am currently so into thamepo (i hope it stays that way, am done with all the disappointment i've experienced with shows lately).
this was my number 4 post on my tumblr top ten.
MAY: 23.5 episode 9 [x]
Tumblr media
the most popular set of the month. not much else to comment. i love the shot of ciize in this one, she's so cute :(
puentalay k-i-s-s-i-n-g [x]
Tumblr media
my favorite for this month! a very impulsive edit that happened solely bc this ear worm of a song (that puen would def listen to) wouldn't leave me alone. it's silly, it's fun, it's cute, it's sexy, it's passionate. it's everything i could ask for! i honestly had a ton of fun with this edit despite having to edit a bazillion (26) separate images for this. the fact that those images are mostly of puentalay kisses makes it worth it.
JUNE: we are episode 12 [x] / 11 [x]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
during summer, i was deep in my we are era. i honestly loved each set i made for the series bc for the longest time, i've wanted to make sets like this. i had my struggles with some of them but they all worked out in the end! episode 12 was the most popular one and episode 11 is just my personal favorite bc i love the purple + hints of yellow/golden -combo.
JULY: we are final episode [x]
Tumblr media
to honor this show and all its relationships, from romantic to platonic, i decided on a rainbow set. it worked super well and i am happy it was so popular ^^ i miss this whole bunch and the amazing summer we had together. (sorry about the quality of this screenshot, the set is too long to fit it on my screen hhh)
this was my number 10 post on my tumblr top ten.
morkday + pvris songs [x]
Tumblr media
probably my favorite set i've made this year overall. my whole year was defined by pvris's music (my spotify top artist) and it felt appropriate to link it together with morkday (and puentalay). i love the layout of this set, the colors, the noise. getting into the lyrics and choosing fitting parts for each image was the best part. my favorite image in the set is the last one that i started from while creating this set. i love the background image for that so much. another one i like is the green one for anywhere but here, bc of the image itself but also bc of the song and its message.
AUGUST: we are couples [x]
Tumblr media
due to traveling around a lot in august and being exhausted from that, i didn't create much. but i am extremely happy with this set that is both the most popular and my personal favorite! everything about this one just worked out. i feel like it really summarizes all of these couples and shows their different sides.
as a fun fact, i have to say that i never put too much thought into choosing the animals for each couple, other than picking the bird for chainpun (for obvious reasons). cat for phumpeem came through peem more than phum who is very dog coded to me. instead, dog (or wolf?) ended up with tanfang bc of tan's puppy-like nature. qtoey getting the bunny feels like a stroke of genius given to me during the making of this set bc looking at it now, it's perfect. they have that sweetness and energy in them i connect with rabbits.
SEPTEMBER: sanvee + moon phases [x]
Tumblr media
ok i might have lied in the july part bc this might be my overall favorite edit i made in 2024. creating it was a battle tho, and i felt like screaming for the best part of the process bc nothing felt like it was working out and i had a ton of problems while figuring out the aesthetic and the typo and the texts. but it all came together better than i ever expected and i just love this set now. i was happy to see ppl liked this too, so this is the most popular edit of this month.
(oab)plawan + hurt by sleeping at last [x]
Tumblr media
it's hard to pick a favorite for this month – despite the sanvee edit already being my obvious FavoriteTM – bc i also love my set for miss mhon (day's mother) [x] that let me went my frustration towards her and my puen x phum parallels set [x] that makes me feel wrong in the head. but i loved this love doesn't have long beans a crazy amount compared to how short and silly that show was. there's just something about oab and plawan - about sailub and pon. they dragged me deep into places with this show and this edit is my ode to that. it was fun to make in its simplicity, i love the colors in it, and pon as plawan is just too pretty (especially when he cries).
OCTOBER: pluto episode 1 [x]
Tumblr media
considering how popular pluto has been and how desperate we all are for gls, am not surprised this set is the most popular one for this month. tbh all my pluto edits have been doing quite well in my standards. i love making these so am just happy you guys like looking at them ♥
pit babe pairs + cartomancy [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]
Tumblr media
never thought 2024 had a sudden pit babe obsession in its sleeve for me but i decided to embrace it. they've talked that the second season would start airing in april, after boys' journey s2 has ended most likely, and i am so very normal about all thi. i've fallen in love with all these boys, both the characters (more than i already was) and the actors, and this edit series only made everything worse. i haven't spent this much time researching things for an edit in a while and i just loved all the analysis i got to do. the process had its ups and downs but overall, i have to say i had a blast.
(picture chosen purely bc i vibed with this kim picture today, tho the kentakim edit might also be my favorite in the set bc the yellow is so good)
NOVEMBER: pluto episode 4 [x]
Tumblr media
absolutely deserves to be the most popular set of this month! it's also my personal favorite out of all the edits i've made for pluto. the colors for this one just worked super well and the scenes are perfect, too. let's see how the series ends in two days, i hope i manage to find some fitting colors for the last episode, too :'D
this was my number 6 post on my tumblr top ten.
DECEMBER: yuanyi + you can love him, but you can't keep him [x]
Tumblr media
the most popular set and also my favorite of this month, all bc i've gone down the rabbit hole with fangs of fortune. i spent an embarrassing amount of time making this set with all its details; starting from screenshotting the whole damn show and then picking the pictures for this edit from the over 400 images i got, to drawing the golden lines by myself on my drawing tablet so i got them just like i wanted. i shall be making so many more edits for this show, be warned.
this was my number 7 post on my tumblr top ten.
top 10 posts of 2024 then are:
morkday + hands (381 notes)
us pilot (295 notes)
last twilight episode 11 (285 notes)
thamepo pilot (283 notes)
jimmysea for starry magazine (271 notes)
pluto episode 4 (252 notes)
yuanyi + you can love him (231 notes)
vice versa rewatch 2024 (222 notes)
last twilight episode 10 (211 notes)
we are final episode (207 notes)
(you can check your top ten posts here)
it was fun to look back into my year in edits like this and see how i've gone through so many phases in 12 months. i cannot even recognize the person i was in around, let's say, last february. or during summer. it's insane how the night changes or however that thing goes.
thank you if you read this far, and if you've liked my creations or left nice tags under them, i thank you even more! it's an honor to be creating to everybody here and i am grateful that others keep enabling me even when i usually create for myself and maybe two other ppl. it is very important to me tho that i get to be part of this amazing community and don't need to just yell into the void by myself ♥

Ultrakill Review: Turn Back Now
"Better late than never ammiright chat"
Ultrakill is one of the best shooter games I've ever played. I'm am no expert on shooters, I've played a good amount. I hate "tatical" shooters, which is why shooters like Valorant have repulsed me, whereas games like Fortnite and Team Fortress 2 have been my addiction. Heck, even in 2016, I liked Overwatch (obviously not anymore), but there was a time. Because "tactical" shooters just equate to camping around in one place waiting for someone to fight you, and doing anything energetic or running around the place is severely discouraged and games like those actively avoid rewarding players for risky play.
Tumblr media
Tactical Shooters Suck, Ultrakill isn't one
Games like Team Fortress 2 and Fortnite are so insanely fun to me because those are shooters that ENCOURAGE you to fight people and have a risky playstyle, while giving players the option to camp, it moreso discourages it and grinding through entire lobbies feels just so satisfying. That being said, you can probably guess that Ultrakill would easily be something I would fall in love with, and you'd be perfectly correct on that. Ultrakill is everything I love about shooters, with 0 of the problems. Heck, this may be even my favorite shooter. While I'm not particularly good at the game, it is so insanely fun, and dying in the game always feels like my fun and not some sort of unbalanced enemy or really weird game design choice.
Combat
Of course, the game isn't finished and has 2 more chapters out of its 9 chapters, but those last 2 chapters could be awful, and I still would love the game. I have most of the game here. I could just ignore those last 2 chapters (again, assuming it's bad, which is highly unlikely). One of the reasons that it's unlikely is due to the games great combat system, I criticize games for cheap combat a lot, if you're making an action game, you need some good combat, and it takes a lot to impress me on that department. Ultrakill did just that. Impress me. It has a wide variety of weapons to choose from, and every level of the game's somehow feels designed around those weapons. There are so many different enemies, each with their own unique weaknesses, good play and risky movement where you utilize all the tools at your desposal is rewarded with style points, just seeing that "ULTRAKILL" combo sign hits different.
Tumblr media
Movement
Ultrakill, while simple in terms of how you can move around the map, is really fun and gets the job well. In the beauty of its simplicity, you can perform lots of cool tricks that made me feel like an edgy teen all over again. Again, the style point system works well and constantly dashing to the goal in a short period of time while making sure to kill all the enemies and doing it all in a style is a pretty daunting and time consuming yet fun goal to achieve for all levels. Not a single level in Ultrakill kept me bored aside from the secret missions. And yes, the movement is somewhat simple in Ultrakill, and while I have seen that there is cool stuff you can do, I can't help but feel that I wish there's a bit more that could be done to improve the game's movement and add more to it while not taking away from its simplicity.
Presentation
We're in an era where people yield nostolgia to things like the N64, and PS1, but honestly, I'd compare this games graphics to Doom, that's despite the fact that the game goes out of its way to tell you that it's inspired by PS1 graphics. The game also goes out of its way to make its creatures disgusting and egregious to look it, really conveying hell's warfare to you well. The game does a great job at conveying some of the story through its environment. enviormental storytelling is always a great way of helping to tell a game story. The music is also great, the chaotic nature of the game just blended perfectly with the music style of Breakcore, I would not pick any other genre of music for a game of the kind, especially the boss themes, that's when the game really locks in. But, I will say, while all the enviorments do a great job of distinguishing each other while keeping the games disturbing feel, that can't be said for gluttony. It honestly was a bit too gross to look at, but apparently, the games developer stated that won't be of concern since he's planning on redesigning it, which I'm looking forward to.
Tumblr media
Verdict
Ultrakill is one of, if not the best, shooter video games that I have ever played and pushes the genre of indie shooters to major new heights. I'm excited to see the game's story end, and I'll continue to replay the hell out of it for the future, it's one of the most addicting experiences I've ever had the pleasure of, you should turn back now because this game will throw you into a loop which you won't be able to escape, trying to break through that mess is crazy.

Sergey synthesizes up a treat for Lea on this special day.
...Yeah I didn't have time or any ideas to make an actually good celebration piece (could you tell?) so please enjoy this shitpost. Don't feel too bad for her though; the True Ending is under the cut:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But seriously,
Happy 6th Anniversary to one of the games ever!
I initially played Crosscode back in 2020 and while I did enjoy it, I feel like replaying it again this year has given me a newfound appreciation for the game and let me take in more of the story/gameplay details I glossed over the first time (and of course I played the DLC this time around, so getting a more gratifying conclusion was a plus).
It may not be my personal "Game of All Time" but after my 2nd playthrough its definitely high up on my list of favorite games, and I enjoyed it to the point where I've had the brainrot for it for pretty much the whole year so far. Honestly the fact that I want to give some other games a chance is the only thing that's held me back from jumping straight into new game plus.
And of course this time around I've gotten (at least somewhat) involved with the fandom. It's small, but honestly I think that made it much more approachable (for me at least). And I feel like I've gotten a lot more comfy with doing fanart in general thanks to this game and the community, and gushing about the game and shitposting has been good fun, so I just wanted to say I appreciate all of y'all 😄
So uh... yeah. That's kinda it. Kinda surprised this game is only 6 years old :/. Also I'd normally say PLAY CROSSCODE but I'm pretty everyone read this probably already soooo... PLAY IT AGAIN!!
(I swear I'll draw some actually good art again at some point).

3tanniversary survey audio answers: ep. 1 | transcript below the cut
[ 241107 ] Hey everyone and welcome to episode one of 3 years with 3tan audio replies.
The first question we have - again, the question is "if you were given time to sit down and talk with me as the author, what would you want to talk about and or do?" First person - it is anonymous - they said, "I'd probably ask for writing advice and want all the details of how you came up with 3tan and also talk about life and whatnot."
That's awesome. I mean, I, I love talking about life, love talking about pretty much anything. I'm a yapper (laughs) sometimes and sometimes I just sit there and listen. It really depends.
But! How I came up with 3tan, I mean. I get this one quite a lot, but it started when I took inspiration from one of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite fanfics. But I definitely wanted to put my own spin on it, right? Like I was definitely not going to copy it entirely because we all know (laughs) that's a no-no, but I did want to reimagine it and put my own little.. tangerine in it (laughs) and then imagine it with Yoongi. But also throwing in that brother's best friend trope because I wanted to explore that with him in general.
And honestly from there it took a life of its own. Completely took a life of its own, nothing else is even remotely close to what that original fanfic was about and they really did take on their own personalities, they all took on their own environment, everything just started - just started flowing. And of course from there I left it as open-ended as possible, that way if these characters decided to come back to me with more, they had more to say, then I was down with it.
And then the second question is, "how do you write your characters' emotions and descriptions so well? I'm very curious about that. Every time I read your [stories] I can feel the emotions deep in my soul and it makes me feel like I'm part of the story as a reader." That is amazing feedback. Thank you.
As far as writing characters' emotions and descriptions, I think I'd have to draw this out, but. Essentially, like let's say you're shooting a movie scene. You have a lead or you have two leads, whatever, right? But then you also have a director, but then you also have camera operators, most likely more than one, and you're switching between those two.
I'm. I put myself in every position. So one moment, I'm the main lead. One moment I'm a camera operator on their right, and then the second - and the next moment - I'm the director looking at everything.
That's why there's so many cuts, I would say. So many beats, those small paragraphs, because everything is like a snapshot basically. And that's how I go about my descriptions.
And then as far as emotions, I'm in it. Like I am in that scene, whatever it is with these people. And it's tough. It really is.
And I know other writers out there will know exactly what i'm talking about. You take on these emotions too when you're writing them. You're attached to them, and it does a number on you, it really does.
That's why.. That's why we definitely need breaks after working on a piece and even posting the piece. Like you got all those emotions on paper and you're releasing it to the world for everyone to see and it's nerve-racking, but it's rewarding at the same time when people really connect with it.
So, yeah!

Ok I gotta come out and say it. I envy you. Like, to a painful extent. The amount of people you get interested in your characters, how you're incredibly skilled in both visual art AND writing, how readers your fics have. I absolutely adore your work, but seeing it fills me with so much envy it's honestly ridiculous.
Did you deal with similar feelings towards other creators when you started writing fic by any chance? If so, how did you deal with those feelings? I feel genuinely stuck feeling worthless about my fics. I'm not as verbose with my language despite over 10 years of writing under my belt and it seems as though my plots don't interest people as much either. So I feel like there's just nothing of worth about any of my work.
I know that this is a lot to dump on you, but I felt like I would burst keeping this all in. Much love to you and I hope you have a wonderful New Year!
Hey there my friend, I've been sitting with this all day trying to decide how I want to answer you. I genuinely appreciate your honesty, because I know this is a familiar feeling for a lot of people, myself included.
I remember when I first rejoined Tumblr in early 2019, desperately trying to find anyone to talk to about TES, I would look at all these blogs gettings asks about their OCs like they were little celebrities and feel envy and longing. Now, when these feelings start to bubble up, I force myself to take a break from sharing my work, be it art or writing, if only to remind myself why I'm creating it and who I'm creating it for: myself. I know it sounds cheesy, and I probably sound like a broken record, but genuinely I just do this because it's bursting out of my skull. But I won't lie and say the engagement and the support doesn't have a big impact on my motivation. I love sharing with people and getting an enthusiastic response.
I think something people might not realize, or maybe they just forget, is that I used to write a lot of smut. Like...a lot of smut. (I still do). Hahaha and it doesn't get a lot of comments or engagement, but it does draw a lot of eyes. Once my smut stories started taking on heavier plotlines, a comment I'd get a lot was "came for the porn, stayed for the plot." And I wasn't writing smut because I thought it would get me an audience, I was just horny LMAO. But it encouraged me to branch out and experiment with the types of stories I was telling.
Anyways, art is another big part of it, yes. But that also didn't get a lot of engagement in the beginning, and my skills were rusty as hell. I was getting maybe 15 notes on here, 30 likes on instagram. But that didn't really matter to me, I was just insane with inspiration. I'd reach out to people and ask to do art trades, got ghosted a lot, made some good friends, (some people who are still my good friends to this day!). But it took a lot of risks, and I made a lot of accidental enemies and learned a lot of hard lessons. But having visuals to go with the stories I'm writing is like advertisement in its own way. I'm just lucky enough to hyperfixate on this shit like it's my lifeblood. I've always obsessively drawn my favorite characters, ever since I was a wee bab. Long before social media was a factor or the words "content creator" even existed.
And I think that's what it all comes back to. Above all else, do what you do with unbridled joy. If someone else finds joy alongside you, all the better! Even if it's just one person. Take risks, make friends, make enemies, draw that blorbo unapologetically and with wild abandon. Love what you create, even when it's bad. Even when it makes you cringe years later, don't delete it. Even when people try to find every reason to hate what you do and who you are. Don't stop.
Every act of creation is bringing something into the world that didn't exist before you made it. And that alone gives it worth.
Happy New Year!

Saw the first ep of Dead Cells Imortalis
Honestly i easily get excited with things. Especially this one. But oh man do i have a lot of things to say and im trying to hold it back 😭
So its blabbin' time.. (spoilers first ep)
Yknow, this feels like those game trailers that does exposition of the introduction of the plot of it... But slightly extended. And it just leaves it underwhelming.
The pace is very quick (possibly budget issue who knows). I dont think i got enough time for Laure's character introduction. She felt like shes just.. there?? (I guess shes literally lore expositor 😭)
I'm kind of ok with Bobby, because they left him as he is, or how i always thought of him. Still an apathetic jerk who has a death wish (WOOO LOVE THAT IN IMMORTAL CHARACTERS MY FAVORITE SOUP ✨✨)
The part where Bobby and Laure started to work as a team only got told through a narration voice over. (Ig with background visuals) So not much back and forth between characters :( Till the end..
Love Bobby's little dialogue at the end (i love how much of a jerk he is screw me), but it felt like its too early for that. Well, knowing how short these series would be i guess they would cut a few things. And i guess that was needed for Laure to strike a deal with him.
And honestly, with how bare and simple the story is so far, it is still possible to have Bobby mute. There are other shows that had already done that. The game itself did. And with the first episode, I could still see it work with him not saying a word.
Laure tells him the deal. Bobby nods and gives a thumbs up.
Laure witnessed him walking away when guard said she'd kill her if he leaves.
Laure calls him out. He turns to her smirking, and continues to walk away. Laure calls him a liar.
YKNOW HOW FUN THAT WOULD BE??!?! JUST HIM MAKING SILLY GUESTURES?!?!??
(i swear i am so tempted to rewrite the whole ep with him mute)
I guess except for that whole Bobby dialogue at the end (and maybe the lead up to the death deal)?? But perhaps the show can express that more in later episodes??
All in all, i guess im a bit frustrated. Because I really do see the potential, and the potential makes me very excited over it. But thats just that: potential. I love Laure's conflict with her own religion and i love how she weighs on what's important to her in the moment. I love how Bobby doesnt care about anything much, because all he sees is that familiar hell and wanting to see a way out. But almost half of it seemed to be resolved in the first ep.
I'd honestly take those short, whimsical silly nature of the game trailers. If they've kept the old artstyle, i woudnt have mind if it was shorter or lesser episodes. But if theyre gonna keep this new style and make a lore heavy story out of it, at least maybe commit to it?
Perhaps im just jumping to conclusions right now since it's just the first episode, and im just fresh out of it. I've only seen it twice. So my only hope was they expand on these characters rather than just plot tools to keep the show going,.. or maybe im asking too much lol.
TL;DR.
First ep impression:
Pace way too quick. Not much character build. Guessing on budget issue. Love the idea, but a bit poorly executed.
Anyways thats probably it... Some thoughts i might keep for later.
And i just wanna say i screamed giddily at this image...

Your post about favorite 'get together' scene made me think about CL and TWR and I love both honestly. Both scenes feel like a culmination, like it's something that was building up for so long and now it's the moment of truth so to speak, in both it's james who takes this step, although they are so different as characters, they are in different places in their lives in general and relationship wise. And i love how in both narratives its a release, freeing of something that sat on the tip of the tounge for so long, but also in different ways. In twr this scene is like putting all the pieces of the puzzle into place, all the 'clues' we (as readers and as lily) were wondering about, and him saying, no, I meant it, that thing I said was the truth, that was me actually taking care of you, not as an act. And in CL it's a release of all this energy, of taking that step, of him being ready and brave enough to realize, to act on these feelings and to speak about them without beating himself up so much, and for Lily too being ready to finally listen to what he has to say and not run away from it (although she tried). And it's the space they both probably weren't able to fill in (james had a bit more growth to do here) before the events of the fic. And I just love how in both instances it feels very natural and just goes to show how good of a writer you are honestly🖤
So sorry for this stream of consciousness, I'm just so excited for the finale of CL, and i love twr so much, so I guess i had to gush over it a little 😅
Well your gushing sent me down a TWR spiral if I'm honest lmao. There really are some fun parallels between the two stories, and how both seem to have one of those "oh thank fuck" moments, though I'd argue that in TWR that line comes from James, and in the CL universe that would come from Lily. There is a similar moment of relief for James in both stories, but in some ways CL James showed much more restraint than TWR James, who was literally at the end of his rope when Lily finally stopped running away from him and actually Talked About Things. Lol so now I'm the one rambling, but all this to say thank you for this message, it made my day to receive it and renewed my love for TWR! Especially twr James who is the swooniest in my incredibly unbiased opinion 🙃

Writerly Questionaire tag!
@saturnine-saturneight, @the-golden-comet and @fortunatetragedy all tagged me for this questionaire! Also thanks to @davycoquette for the original meme!
About You
When did you start writing?
I remember writing a story for a first grade assignment when I was 4-5 and really enjoying it. They gave us little booklets that were just like construction paper cut into shapes with lined paper inside to write on. I didn't really start writing as a hobby until I was about 10, writing naruto fanfic.
Are the genres/themes you enjoy reading different from the ones you write?
I tend to write what I like to read! I like nonfiction on occasion which I definitely can write, I just don't do it very often.
Is there an author (or just a fellow writer!) you want to emulate, or one to whom you’re often compared?
No one has ever compared me to an author ever, lmfao, but there are some writers here on writeblr that I've got an eye on, with prose that fucking slaps. I haven't actually sat down and read their stuff yet for the most part, because my life has been crazy but from the excerpts I see on tumblr I'm like. Yes. That. That's great. How do they do that. shout out to @cowboybrunch, @fortunatetragedy and @davycoquette!
Can you tell me a little about your writing space(s)?
90% of the time I write in my messy ass bed my fitted sheet refuses to stay on. The other 10% I'm wandering to other places in the house.
What’s your most effective way to muster up some muse?
Write or die sometimes brute forces it out of me. Otherwise, brainstorming with a sounding board, answering some asks or tag games, or rereading my old stuff can all help me out here.
Did the place(s) you grew up in influence the people and places you write about?
I mean. Probably! I definitely do that thing where I'll picture the layout of a building as a building I'm familiar with. I've written a lot of apartments that look suspiciously like my grandparent's old house.
Are there any recurring themes in your writing, and if so, do they surprise you at all?
Yeah almost definitely lmfao. I keep noticing patterns after the fact. I have been circling the idea of dead worlds for one, and what it takes to survive there a couple times now. It's less obvious in project Cannibalism, but it's honestly still there.
Your Characters
Would you please tell me about your current favorite character? (Current WIP, past WIP, never used, etc.)
My current obsession is definitely Ravi, who is a dnd character, a larp character, and the main character of my Summer League OCT rounds. They started off as a gnome alchemist who is like just a back alley drug dealer when they got stuck in Barovia in a Curse of Strahd campaign. (Currently the only member of the original party still alive and aiming to keep it that way) I changed them to be a halfling when writing them for the OCT on a whim because it feels like a more grounded fantasy race to draw from without having to explain too much thanks to Lord of the Rings and its enduring cultural legacy. I've been greatly enjoying the process of writing, essentially, an incredibly traumatized character embark on a life or death venture among people who have no idea what the stakes are for them, exploring how badly adapted some of those defense mechanisms are for a regular ass place and how other people would view them, and how they would get there in the first place. I'd put them in my mouth and chew on them
Which of your characters would you be friends with in real life?
I can be a pretty sensitive person who prefers straightforward communication and positivity, so every single one of my horrible little prickly assholes is out. And that's a category I really enjoy writing so that's almost all of them lmfaoooo. I'd probably be friends with Wakma though. Wakma's cool.
Which characters would you dislike the most if you met them?
I wouldn't be able to stand Mala. She's consistently unpleasant and horrible to the people around her and I would not be able to let it roll off or just hit back like Rakani does.
Tell me about the process of coming up with your characters?
I like to develop characters in response to aspects I find interesting about the worldbuilding, or around a concept I want to explore. Sometimes they come about because there's a role in a story I need to fill. Wakma, for example, mostly came about because I knew Rakani absolutely needed a friend who didn't come from the Suyan hierarchy, and I already had this really cool idea about nomadic airship traders so I made him a diplomat from that culture, and then developed more of his character as I wrote him and decided what was important to the story.
Do you notice any reoccurring themes/traits in your characters?
Traumatized little goblins, people who aren't acceptable victims, who lash out and behave in unacceptable ways.
How do you picture your characters?
I do draw, so I do have pictures of what characters look like sometimes, but sometimes they're just blobs and I decide along the way what they look like. I do try to be deliberate about it though, because diversity in race and body types rarely just happens to me. It's something I work towards and am purposefully deliberate about.
Your Writing
What’s your reason for writing?
I wanna and no one's stopped me yet.
Is there a specific comment or type of comment you find particularly motivating coming from your readers?
i love it when someone points at something I did specifically about what about it they vibed with or excited them.
How do you want to be thought of by those who read your work?
Just don't look at me and expect my characters please.
What do you feel is your greatest strength as a writer?
Clarity.
What have you been frequently told your greatest writing strength is by others?
Well I think people have cried about my writing a lot, so it's quite emotional. I'm always very pleased when someone says I've hit on a level of some emotional realism.
How do you feel about your own writing?
I have great, creative ideas, but the execution could use a little work. I think my writing is pretty plain and worksmanlike, and that's like fine.
If you were the last person on earth and knew your writing would never be read by another human, would you still write?
This does absolutely open up a whole ass can of worms. jamie's right, how am i surviving here, if im subsidence farming I don't think I'd have the time and energy for writing. But like, I don't think I would if I knew I'd never have an audience. Even a small audience of one would be reason enough to write but if it's just me I might not.
When you write, are you influenced by what others might enjoy reading, or do you write purely what you enjoy?
I don't care what other people want when I'm writing. I only care when I'm editing lmfao.
i have not kept track of who has answered this or not so I'm just going to leave this open to anyone who wants this!!

AO3 Year End Roundup 2024
Thank you for the tag, @crackinglamb!
Tagging: @farfromdaylight @dreadfutures @rosella-writes @myreia and anyone else who hasn't been tagged yet and wants to do this!
Words posted: 15,777
Additional Words Written: A little over 100k by the looks of it! I had at least a little of what I posted this year written in 2023, so I don't have an exact number.
Grand total of words: 121,950
Fandoms: It's been an FFXIV year! I posted my first XIV fic in February and my most recent one this month.
Works: 5
Highest Kudos: At present, it's the one from February, In Thine Arms, Ere Long, with 55.
Highest Hit Oneshot: Same as the above, with 534.
New Things I Tried: I don't think I've written phone sex before? Honestly, it's all been pretty thoroughly in my wheelhouse.
Fic I Spent the Most Time On: Without a doubt, Harsh Light, Ariane's post-Heavensward fic. I have hope of having it and its companion fic, Gentle Dark, finished and posted in 2025!
Fic I Spent the Least Time On: I'd guess Of the Depths was probably the fastest write.
Favorite Thing I Wrote: Of the ones I've posted, I think The Pursuit of Idle Pleasures is my favorite. The Starlight fic was fun too! but I just so dearly love writing Urianger's POV. Of the unposted work there is much of Harsh Light and Gentle Dark that I am proud of and excited to share, though there's a lot of work yet to do.
Favorite Thing I Read: @myreia's Divergence of the Heart (Aymeric/WoL, Thancred/WoL, Thancred/Hilda, 53K, rated E) was a really standout read for me this year. A beautifully-written fic about two of my favorite things--complicated relationships, and the Warrior of Light having a bad time in Ishgard--this story moved me in a variety of ways and has lingered with me long after I finished reading! Highly recommend.
Something I Finished: I finished five one-shots! Also a first draft of a nearly 60k longfic.
Miscellaneous Highlights: I'll give a highlight to my Starlight fic, No Sweeter Gift, started last winter and left unfinished until I returned to it this month. I'm not sorry I let it sit for a year; I think I have a much stronger grasp of both Ariane's voice and Urianger's now, and was able to make it what I wanted it to be! (Also, I've learned a lot about gpose, and it was a lot of fun doing some shots to go along with the fic.)
Writing Goals for 2025: Finish and post Harsh Light and Gentle Dark. Beyond that, I got where the wind takes me. When I set goals for a whole year, they almost always end up either not realistic or not mattering to me by the end of the year because something else seized my attention, so I'm just not going to worry about it.
Final Thoughts: I considered 2023 to be kind of a rough year for writing, and I feel like I came back pretty strong in 2024. Not just in raw word count, though that's definitely a part of it (I wrote about 40k in 2023). While I am sorry last year lost me so much momentum on the Dragon Age longfic that's currently sitting on the shelf, I cannot be sorry for having fallen so hard into FFXIV, because it truly did so much to revive my energy for writing and help me find the joy in it again.
Also, it's been fun writing so much smutfic again! In recent years I've kind of struggled with writing sex scenes, not for any conscious reason or inhibition, but I'd just start something and then get bored with it quickly and move onto something else. Perhaps falling so deep into a new ship has revived my inspiration! Whatever the reason, that's been most of what I've posted this year, and it's been a blast!
I am really looking forward to sharing more of Ariane's story as it comes together! There's also a lesson I'm hoping to take from how much fun I had writing this year, and that's that not everything has to be a longfic. I did make a lot of longfic progress this year; it's the vast majority of what I wrote, and I'm very happy with the numbers. Nonetheless, I think periodically writing a one-shot has really helped with keeping my energy up. I think I've had a bit of a problem in recent years with putting too much pressure on myself to turn every idea into a Big Story, and squirreling ideas away to use in some theoretically longfic later instead of just developing them into a perfectly workable short story today.
I do love writing longfic, and I'm pretty good at motivating myself through those long first drafts, but nonetheless... sometimes you just forget what it feels like to finish something. Also when a fic can take months or even years to finish, it keeps me living with this perpetual terror that I won't be able to sustain the interest long enough to finish the thing before my fixation moves on to something else... and leaves me feeling guilty and sad when that does happen and a big project needs to go on the shelf, unfinished and largely unseen. I love writing, and I love writing fanfiction because there's no reason to do it but love, love of the source material and love of the characters and love of the community and love of writing itself. But there are moments when that feeling starts to creep in that I'm making it a job for myself, and I don't want to do that.
It's caused me to give some more thought to how I want to structure future work, Ariane's stories in particular, because while there's lots more I want to write about her, not all of it needs to be a longfic. Most probably doesn't, in fact. Harsh Light did and does, but I already knew that the next thing (chronologically) was going to be more a series of vignettes than one long story. The big question will be how I want to write about Shadowbringers. I know broadly what I want to write about in Shadowbringers, and it's such an important part of Ariane's story that for a long time I felt like it had to be a longfic... but seeing as it pretty closely follows canon other than the ship stuff, I don't think making it a longfic would bring enough new to the table to justify how much canon I would have to straight-up rehash. (Even in the current draft of Harsh Light, there are a few points where I'm struggling with this--I think I probably need to give myself permission to pare certain canon events down to a summary or a passing mention where I don't actually have much new to say about them.) So now, I'm considering that maybe it doesn't need to be a longfic at all! Maybe simply writing the vital moments and letting the reader's memory of canon events carry the rest is enough. Furthermore, I'm pretty sure anything I want to write about Endwalker and Dawntrail can be done in one-shots.
And realizing that... honestly, it's very freeing. In addition to lifting a lot of the pressure I tend to put on myself, it also means I don't need to write everything in order; I don't need to be constantly plowing forward chronologically with no breaks. If I want to work on some Shadowbringers fic while I'm finishing Gentle Dark I can do that. I don't have to look at my character's story as a massive, daunting project that will take years to finish, but rather as a well of possibility that I can dip into whenever I want, and wherever chronologically I want, and I can leave and work on other things and come back whenever I want, and it's okay.
2024 in general was a lot about freeing myself from other people's expectations. So maybe the next step is considering the expectations I set for myself. I want to keep writing, and fanfiction in particular, a joy. I may always want to write long stories in some capacity, but I think right now opening myself to writing more short ones has been very good for me and something to embrace in the coming year.

Hello.....If you don't mind me asking, can I ask, what are your top 7 favorite media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series/etc) and your top 10 favorite (fictional) characters from any media? Why do you love them all? Sorry if you've answered this questions before......
Interesting specific.......
7 media huh?
SLC Punk - live action movie from the 90s about Punks in Salt Lake City during the 80s. As a trans person that grew up in Arizona in a region populated by a ton of Mormons I sorta related to it kinda and nowadays I feel like it's actually a really funny, really scary, and really beautiful movie that gets overlooked a lot.
The Shining by Stephen King (book) - it's not my favorite horror novel and it's not my favorite Stephen King novel, but it was the book that got me to enjoy horror. The story is so scary and good, the characters are fleshed out, and there's a whole underlying dialogue about abuse and alcoholism that's very scary. Which is part of why I don't like the movie, cuz the movie adaption (erases the usefulness of the titular "Shining") sorta erases the personal story about alcoholism and abuse. And, it's definitely there still, it focuses more of its efforts on just being a spooky haunted hotel, it's style over substance to me. The connection of the personal and horror made me sort of see the true story telling value of the genre, and now I'm like. In love with horror.
Inside Mari by Shuzo Oshimi (manga) - the best way to explain this is, what if Freaky Friday were more of a psychological horror. Reading Inside Mari has been a very important thing to me as an adult, I sorta see myself in it and there's so much trans emotions in this (there's a whole thing that Oshimi is probably trans), this work is so dear to me I refuse to read to watch other people's take or interpretations, which sounds bad but I just want my special thing that I interpret my way to be interpreted my own way. It's amazing and I love it. All of Oshimi's work has hit me in a personal place.
Wandering Son by Takako Shimura (manga) - one of the first portrayals of a trans person I saw in manga, and honestly still one of the best. There's a lot of criticisms we could give it, but I love it and I related to it so much. It was nice to see a story follow such a young trans girl (and boy) and see them grow. Probably part of why I decided to finally identify as trans.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 3: Rebellion (anime movie) - this one is largely just emotional stuff that's coincidental. The original Madoka tv show (and thus first two movies) were great but I never thought it was perfect, but Rebellion emotionally murdered me and as everything else mentioned, it felt so relatable. Came out in a very important time frame for bonding when my husband, so I got to see it in theaters with him (twice technically, we went a second time with a friend) plus I got to see it with another friend (three times total) hehe. It's just like, a very big date for my husband and I, I remember it perfectly down to what I had for dinner (my first bowl of professional made ramen lmao). The movie just, really hit, and the circumstances around seeing it were just really important to me.
Lateralus by Tool (album) - I'm sure some people are gonna be like "whaaaa how edgy loser" or whatever about this. But Lateralus was an important album for me cuz it introduced me to larger intellectual concepts I'd never considered before, made me really fall in love with that brand of music, and was one of those things I would put on repeat when I felt very depressed (read: dysphoric). I know the members have sorta grown into shitty people (namely Maynard) but this album is just very important to me.
I'm just going to say The Green Knight (movie), there's a lot I want to put here, especially a lot about Arthurian literature, but I think the best way to just, placeholder all the Arthurian shit I'm obsessed with. The Green Knight is a fantastic adaptation that's incredibly beautiful and well acted. Love it.
tbh w/ you I don't wanna do characters rn so if you swing back by later I might.

Time for my Qi Rong fic semi-masterpost, AKA all the fics I've read that have characterized and delved into Qi Rong's character in a way very few TGCF fans do. Consider this a Qi Rong bible if you will. None of these are in any particular order, these are just fanfics I fell in love with through Qi Rong's characterization. 1. My Nuisance by FallLover
Honestly an amazing fic with amazing Qi Rong characterization. He may not be part of the main pairing in this one, but the comparisons between Yin Yu and Qi Rong are absolutely beautiful and delve into both characters' motivations and ideas post-canon. It also acknowledges Qi Rong's hatred brought by betrayal and his self-harming tendencies. Honestly an amazing fic, even in QuanYin isn't your cup of tea, specifically for the amazing characterization. 2. When the Sun Comes Up I'll be There With You by lordydoo
Once again, amazing Qi Rong characterization, and also provides some much needed Guzi stuff. It may be Qiurong, but most of the fic is Qi Rong-centric as he navigates a new life. The story's realistic while still retaining the original novel's character motivations. Qi Rong is insanely well written in this fic, and you can tell the author put a lot of thought into his backstory and reasons he is the way he is. Also, Xuan Ji wingwoman. We love girlbosses.
3. A Lesson in Sans-Serif by pearliegloom
Honestly I could write an entire other post about this one fic, it's my personal favorite. Besides being accurate characterization, I'm an absolute sucker for Qi Rong goofy times. Qi Rong says fuck abusive parents in this fic and honestly he's just so iconic. This one doesn't delve that deep into Qi Rong's backstory or anything, but goddamn we really need funny Qi Rong-centric fics.
4. To Change is in a Human's Nature, But a God's? by Vexxed_Imp
Another rare long Qi Rong-centric fics. Sorry for the amount of Qiurong here, but I think all my Qi Rong fans would know how hard it is to find Qi Rong fics outside of a ship context. In this one, Qi Rong ascends to godhood and deals with god stuff. Honestly it's very entertaining and a great long read with a great premise. I wish there were more "Qi Rong becomes a calamity/god fics" but just like his fans, there are very few. Honestly, even if you're not a Qi Rong fan, this fic's great for building up Heavenly Official characters and the general vibes of heaven.
5. Pretext by foxflowering
First, only, and last NSFW entry on this post. This fic's short, but it really made me fall in love with stinky lesbian Qi Rong. I was gonna keep this list SFW only, but this fic deserved a spot on the masterpost based on its sheer chaotic energy. Reading this fic made me feel like Qi Rong was a girl I passed by in high school or something. She's written extremely realistically to the point it was uncanny. If you love urself some stinky fem Qi Rong, this is probably the fic for you.
Alright, that's it for now. I'd include more, but good Qi Rong-centric fics are extremely hard to find, especially if it does not include a ship. Feel free to reblog with more fics, I just wanted to list these five for any Qi Rong enjoyer who's having a hard time telling which fanfic is actually Qi Rong-centric and which fic is a Hualian fic with Qi Rong cussing in the background. Have fun!

Veilguard feels like the mission statement was, "What if we made Dragon Age: Origins but in a way that's more like Mass Effect 2?"
You've got the six different backgrounds alongside different races you can choose from that all influence your character's experience in NPC interactions.
But the story structure is more centered on companion-centric or faction-centric storylines for each character or faction. Davrin is a Grey Warden and he has a storyline going on for him and what he's about, but also the Grey Wardens have a separate Grey Warden faction questline for what's happening in their neck of the woods.
All of which runs alongside the main plot and ties into the main plot in certain ways, but are also distinctly separate bottle stories unto themselves. Bottles that become slightly more interesting if you happen to share your background with that particular faction or character.
Which I honestly think was a neat way to go about it. Bringing back the background origins is something the fandom's wanted for a while now, and there's worse games to take inspiration from than Mass Effect 2.
Veilguard has a lot of jank. It feels exactly like a game that took ten years to finish. It's unpolished, you can feel the influence of multiple different directions in it, and it shows its ass sometimes.
One of my "favorite" moments in the game is when you're faced with an authority figure in the seat of his power, surrounded by his loyal followers, who has been nothing but aggressively unreasonable towards you since you met him. And the game asks if you want to:
1 - Talk him down with reason and logic. 2 - Fucking beat his ass with violence.
If you choose #2, there's not. Like. A combat challenge to overcome. There's no big, difficult boss fight to face him in. You punch him one time, he goes right down, and now we're doing things your way. That's it. That's all it took.
If you choose #1, there's no labyrinthine maze of dialogue options you have to navigate in order to finally get through to this guy. Your character goes "Quit being a dick!" and he instantly sees reason and comes around.
This stands out because a separate portion of the game requires you to navigate a labyrinthine maze of dialogue options, and any mistake will result in a brutally punishing boss fight you're probably under-leveled for. That is a thing in the game.
But it's not a thing here. Whatever you pick, this man will be effortlessly solved. You're only being asked to choose which cutscene you want to watch. Does your character vanquish him violently or diplomatically? Which is better for your personal roleplay?
The people who designed that section of the game are clearly not the people who designed this section of the game. Veilguard shows its trouble development history.
But on the whole, I'd nonetheless say it's good. I wish it were better but I still enjoy what it does and have had a good time with it.
It doesn't do a very good job of meeting the expectations for a Bioware game; The player's opportunities to influence events and solve things the way they want them solved are reserved solely for the Big Meaningful Choice moments. The little choices, the small decisions you make in the sidequests or in a given conversation tree that add minor ripples to the fabric of the story, those aren't there for Veilguard.
Most of the quests are your basic, "Go to the place and kill the bad guys," tier stuff with none of the immersive elements that Bioware games usually employ.
But for what it is, Veilguard has a neat story, likable characters, and solid gameplay to carry through. I hope the team currently at Bioware can use it as a base to learn more about what works, what doesn't, and what the audience wants out of a Bioware entry.
