In the wake of the IA situation, I've seen a lot more posts circulating about using your local library and I just. Sigh
#i dont know whether these people are thinking of Big City libraries#or their local is the most well stocked most accommodating library known to man#but my library consists of mostly kids books and ww2 skinned romance lites and james patterson thrillers#if youre lucky theres some pop history books on the tiny shelf in the back#oh also the opening times? 0930 to 1700 of course. yknow. when most ppl are at work :)#oh except sunday. when were just closed ;)#trying to get the library to bring in a specific book? sorry that'll be nine months and we'll send it to the library#in booksbury-upon-tyne which will cost you a £30 round train ticket (if the trains are running ;)) and a three hour journey#(cause were swr and life is a fucking nightmare)#im not doing that for a book im not even sure will be relevant to what im looking for yknow#i guess what im saying is that while i love the concept of libraries#they havent really evolved with the times. theyve been what theyve been for a millenia#and the intellectual value they were built to provide hasnt kept up with the funds theyre actually allocated#now i will say these are kinda complaints specific to me cause im not the biggest fiction reader#and if i am theyre mainly classics so my gripe is more with the proviso of non fiction books#and the variety of them which is incredibly narrow#and i dont drive so the intersection of this with the hellscape that is south englands public transport network also sucks dick and balls#like i realise the library provides a lot of necessary resources for older people and kids and those without internet access etc.#but that does leave a large swathe of people with little to no reason or time to visit the library yknow.#i dont blame the library workers of course but i also dont think its the visitors (customers?) fault#that there isnt a great incentive for them to visit#especially since i have found most of my fave nonfiction books in second hand stores#which would have either cost £80 new or would have been locked ina university library out of reach of the common folk#whatever. ramble ramble yada yada. ev complains again whats new

We got a DVD player from goodwill for like 2 bucks so that we can watch dvds from the library in town this is a fucking game changer I'm so excited
#We got two classic who serials season one of quantum leap and the Martian movie#Going through a scifi era right now (as if I'm not always in a scifi era)#Also got some dvds from goodwill cause they were like a buck each#AND I found a book I read in middle school but forgot the name of that I'd been thinking about for years!#Not The Book that's been haunting me but it's up there#AND a new antique from the used book store#Also I found out the family that runs our used book store is also from Houston?#I got trapped in Old Southern Man conversation with the guy at the counter#Afterwards Jen told me my accent jumped out during the conversation and took like ten minutes to fade back to my normal speech which is#Interesting. I know my accent gets thicker when I talk to other southerners I wonder if there's any linguistics papers on that. Probably.#Downside to the goodwill dvd player is she doesn't have a remote so we gotta figure that out#I thought we could use the buttons on the DVD player itself but she only has. Two buttons.#The weird thing about growing up broke in the 2000s is that we jumped straight from VHS to Netflix#And I only ever watched dvds on like. My cousins ps2 or whatever. And the portable DVD player I got for Christmas one year#Our local library also has Nintendo switch games to borrow go to your library bro they kick ass

#thinking of dinosaurs and troodontids were my favorite dinosaurs as a child#when younger i had a real full troodontid tooth fossil that meant a lot to me#for a time we lived within a few kilometers of hadrosaur sites and troodontid sites#while wider general area had many sites of recovery for the big celebrities like tyrannosaur and multiple dromaeosaurs#at that time troodontids were kinda infamous for i think the depiction in some childrens field guides and dino books#which depicted like a fantasy speculative humanoid troodontid based on 1980s model at Canadian Museum of Nature in ottawa#anyway would visit a small local paleo center a lot and woman in her 70s or 80s ran the counter of their center and rock shop#one day she asked me what my fave dino was and i said troodon so she pulled out the tooth and just gifted it to me#in little black case size of ring box with padding and transparent plastic viewing cover kinda like laminate for displaying a trading card#tooth got stolen from out my vehicle while giving some people a ride while at university before i got too poor for tuition#later during first year of pandemic owner of my storage unit died and new property owners threw away everything i ever owned#i was homeless anyway lost job due to early pandemic closures and had to allocate any money to insulin and other prescrip meds#but wouldve found a way to save my things if the new owners had contacted me#they threw out photoalbums y backpacking gear y books y musical instruments y clothes y artwork y camera y all family keepsakes#and all childhood treasures like souvenirs and gifts and school awards and writing portfolios and all the little memories#which i was always sentimental about as child#from earliest age my room looked like a natural history museum with plants and maps and library of field guides#and rocks and field trip keepsakes and all kinds of little animal figurines and mother had painted room in forest greens and browns#to feel like a forest and among the succulent plants and a globe sat the troodon tooth#parents passed when i was a child#never near any family and were always moving never got to settle into proper stable place then father passed after long sad illness#and mother put in so much effort but she passed few years later and i could not take care of myself or my remaining material possessions#and so im still quite hurt having nothing whatsoever remaining of my childhood or school friends or mother or life generally#and when trying to process grief my thoughts often come back to the troodontid tooth as a focal point a distillation of what was lost#even when young i knew it was advised not to become too connected to material physical possessions#but still there are some small little trinkets in our lives that seem to hold so much meaning and i tortured myself for losing that tooth#thinking about troodon reminds me of childhood

*inhales*.....................DEEP SIGH
#i'm exhausted#i have a job interview this week which i should be grateful for but i'm still so unsure about what i want in life#and i'm so scared of making wrong choices like i'm terrified#and the company seems kind of conservative in its structures and culture i mean apparently there are low hierarchies but#they make their whole deal about 'family' and then there are almost only men working there which is like ughhh like the ratio is ridiculous#and the thing is i found another job offer at my local library and i would just so love to work there!!!! i will definitely apply this week#i'm just scared that i'll do well enough during the interview that they will actually want ti hire me and then i can't say no#bc i didn't even expect them to reach out to me in the first place so i guess my application was better than i thought#so now im'm debating whether i should take the chance or sabotage the interview so that i get to try really hard for#the application for the library job instead#i sound ridiculous being upset that an employer is showing interest in me like what a privilege to be able to turn that down#at the same time. like thankfully there is financial support from the government so i'm safe in that regard atm but it's really not much#and i also don't want to be in this state of unemployment for too long#and yet...i want to just spend my days doing something worthwhile? maybe i should just be grateful that i have the privilege to choose betw#different jobs and try to take advantage of that fact and opt for the offers that speak to me rather than cry about it#god i'm so stressed this is my first time in life where i can't rest assured that the upcoming years will follow the same routine#like how it was when i entered uni like i just knew 'alright i'll be studying for at least 5 years and then we'll see' and now#it's like i don't know what i'll be doing next month or in half a year or next year or in five years#the uncertainty. killing me. that's how i know i grew up way too protected cause i break under the slightest inconvenience god#alright crying rant over from now on i'll be growing up for real 👍#personal

fighting for my life to locate a pdf of the prose lancelot bc i so desperately need to confirm this quote i found that, to paraphrase (dramatically), describes lancelot as having giant tits.
#to be specific#‘his chest was such that one so broad and full and well developed could not be found in any other body’#there is more but i’m not going to try to fit that in my tags thx#reddit tells me a digital copy does not exist#which is. heartbreaking#bc my local library hates all my academic journies and has NOTHING#and my nearest bookstore charges on average 3693463936 dollars for a single shitty paperback#w love to the bookstore but also. not with love to the bookstore DROP YOUR PRICES#arthuriana#arthurian legend#hello crying out does anyone have a copy and the ability to show me this quote

Literally begging everyone - especially if you write, especially for a deadline - to read Green Onions by Akutagawa Ryuunosuke if you are able to.
You will thank me for this. It's been two days since I read it and I cannot stop giggling.
#actually i would recommend any of his short stories i've read so far#i found a copy of them at my local library which was very unexpected!#and most of them are quite somber and detached#they really do feel like old folktales or myths which is lovely and they're all quite nuanced#anyways green onions is just as nuanced but it is by far the exception in terms of tone and narration and it kinda took me out#japanese literature#akutagawa ryunosuke#storyrambles#there's a message to it there if you dig into it like all his other stories#it is also an eternal mood

I’m having thoughts about Lady Macbeth and god help me if i cannot find the version of the film I am thinking of because I will start biting
#specifically i'm talking about the 2010 version lol#my mom had me watch it years ago and i remember very little#but i am currently experiencing mild brainrot from finishing Harlots a bit ago#and i found out that the reason I vaugely recognized the actress is in fact because I had seen her before#And now i wanna see what the films vibes are cause Macbeth is fun#and also because i am very gay for unhinged womenTM so like several winning combos that i am so normal about#I have had zero luck with various internet sources#but apparently one of the libraries loosely connected with my local one has a dvd copy so I can potentially do an interlibrary loan#because while i am very gay i refuse to pay money to watch something once online instead of owning it unless there is good reason

#my art#bby please call me back#im serious#i will install that rfid system FOR YOU if youll just get back to me#YES this is about the library again#i wasnt kidding last time when i said “forgotten” and “underfunded”. my sweet baby girl still has a paper catalog#my most preciousestt of all darling princesses refuses to join the broader county library system and hasnt received a major update#or even maintenance in like ten years#her power strips are from radio shack#she got her very first queer book three months ago#her health and psychology books are so wildly out of date that they encourage electrosconvulsive therapy as a good and recommended thing#that you should seek out if you are someone who wants help with an addiction#her book on local diners was written in 2011#(over half of said diners did not survive lockdown and a second edition of this book was never written) (as of jan 2024)#her astronomy books are from 2008#i found one that mentions planet x#as in the body that we would later call pluto#as in this book is from the 30s#as in this thing should really be in the archive and not in between the one from 2008 and the one from 2014#...#i can fix her.
