y'all know how in the Adventure English dub episode 9, Gabumon takes off his fur to keep Matt warm and he very memorably says "naked Digimon"?
They cut that line out of the Discotek blu-ray release. The line is just not there. I listened to the scene a dozen times and it's just gone. they fucking censored the show that was already pretty censored! I don't know if the version they received was already like that or if it was a choice Discotek made, but it's pretty damn annoying
#digimon#Digimon english dub#is the word 'naked' THAT offensive to people who are buying Digimon on home media over 20 years after it aired on TV????#like what was the thought process here?#did they think mostly preschoolers are watching these blu-rays?#did they think preschoolers will be scandalized by Gabumon saying the word 'naked'?#while not even showing him actually being naked?#even though he's a Digimon who can't actually BE naked???#like WHAT???#i have the old DVD releases from 2012 and I wonder if it was cut out there too#and discotek just received it like that#SOMEONE made this idiotic decision

so I've gotten into symphogear because of your post about the space shuttle crash clip a while ago, and I was wondering: you mention in your tags that 'this' translation is really good and better than whatever was before. What translation should I be going with when watching the symphogear anime? Watched the first season and really enjoyed it, but pondering if there's a best way to go about watching the rest. Google is unhelpful because all I find are fandom infighting about things I don't yet have context for...
this is the best ask I have ever received, I’m glad I can ruin someone else’s brain with that clip. So, yeah, someone may (will) disagree, but the most recent retranslation on the Blu-ray release by Discotek is my personal favorite translation. Partially because a friend of mine worked on it, but i just like it on its own merits even outside of that. The translators are super big Symphogear fans and it just shows in how they understand the characters, how they talk about each other, and how to convey that dynamic through subtitles. They also subtitle the song lyrics in color-coded lines for each singer, which rules, because sometimes “who is singing what line” is very relevant for the storytelling!!! They also make sure any arc phrases like “Don’t give up on living” are consistent and clear which sometimes was very lost in the original translation and sometimes muddied scenes.
i know the re-release goes all the way to the end, but I’m not fully sure if the new translation does too. I may need to check up on that. Sorry if you’re reading this, translator friend, I haven’t kept up with your work and am a bad friend
#also if you’re wondering where to find it to actually watch it I just pirated it lmao#unhelpful answer on that one but#I know you can find the actual blu rays themselves on RiteStuf. may it rest in peace soon#Symphogear

My Review of Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan
A random guy being struck in the head with a spiked-bat and having his entire skull swiped away in a bloody mess. You’d think I would have picked this up in 2007 when I picked up a punch of other absurd animes like Super Milk Chan. But time does make fools out of all of us. And because the randomizer is being a dick to me currently, I’m now stuck with this ridiculous mess. A student who disappears and no one noticed a thing. The class rep randomly turns into a monkey. Another boy randomly turns into a Shiba Inu. The male protagonist gets half of his skull sliced off and is magically better five seconds later (and the last one happens numerous times throughout the series).
That my friends, is the magic of Dokuro-Chan! Dokuro Mitsukai is an angel sent to the past to take care of a problem that will shape the very future. She was sent to kill a high school boy named Sakura Kusakabe. And before I continue the synopsis, I think this is the first time I’ve ever heard of a boy with the name “Sakura”. Amazing! Anyways, the reason why Sakura has a hit by angels in the future is because in the future, Sakura will come up with a way to stop females from developing at the age of 12 and these women stay like that forever. So imagine if a 67 year old girl looks like a 10 year old! Wow, that’s…oh so illegal! That is just raising the Lolita-fetish by 3000%! Well, Dokuro has taken a liking to Sakura and thinks she can find a way around this without killing him. However, other angels like Sabato Mihashigo and Dokuro’s sister Zakuro think he needs to be destroyed. And every episode we watch as this boy gets whacked eight ways from Sunday! Yeah, this anime is balls-to-the-wall out there, filled with poop jokes, panty-shots, crude humor, and absurdity on Pop Team Epic levels. BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: So back in the day, this anime was carried by Media Blasters and given an English dub. Now Media Blasters is still around! It’s just that a lot of their older animes have died off and it’s up to other companies to give it a good home. So now Discotek licensed it. The dub has many recognizable voices who thankfully went on to do better things like Wendee Lee, Mela Lee, Laura Bailey, and Johnny Yong Bosch. But again, you have to start somewhere in this business!
And I do find it funny that voice actress Mela Lee makes a call back to this particular anime. When Lee was in Durarara, she said the signature line Dokuro says and hearing her in this makes me giggle. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from. JAPANESE CAST: *Dokuro is played by Saeko Chiba (known for Nagihiko on Shugo Chara, Nina on Code Geass, Miu on NANA, Azmaria on Chrono Crusade, Ruby on Rosario to Vampire, and Neko Musume on xxxHOLiC Kei) *Sakura is played by Reiko Takagi (known for Tadase on Shugo Chara, Holly on Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Part 2, Su on Love Hina, and Young Bon on Blue Exorcist) ENGLISH CAST: *Dokuro is played by Wendee Lee (known for Faye on Cowboy Bebop, Konata on Lucky Star, Kirigakure on Blue Exorcist, Yoruichi on Bleach, Yui on Fushigi Yugi, Moegi on Naruto, and Haruhi Suzumiya) *Sakura is played by Johnny Yong Bosch (known for Ichigo on Bleach, Lelouch on Code Geass, Makoto on Free!, Izaya on Durarara, Artemis on Sailor Moon redub, Koizumi on Haruhi Suzumiya, and Yukio on Blue Exorcist) SHIPPING: So it’s obvious that Sakura has eyes for Shizuki, a random girl in his class. But she’ll never express her feelings. At the end of several episodes, she has this face of disappointment given towards Sakura. Probably because the mood is always broken by one Dokuro-chan!
Dokuro seems to like Sakura as she hasn’t tried to kill him and made it stick. Every time she would destroy his body, she would always repair it. Any other angel with the mission of killing Sakura would have laid waste to this kid by the end of episode one. But Dokuro doesn’t want to do so as she likes Sakura. Hell, she defied orders from her superiors, including her younger sister to be with this guy. However, she wouldn’t hesitate killing him for accidentally copping a feel! GUILTY PLEASURE: Pipiru piru piru pipiru pi
…I like the OP theme… I’m officially going to Hell for saying that. ENDING: Well this series is only 4 episodes (or eight 13-minute episodes). Each episode is filled with angel-laced crack and several times an episode we watch as Sakura is disembodied by a spiked-bat. You know, usual shit for an anime like this! So the final episode has Dokuro wanting to start her own club at the school. And hearing Wendee Lee as Dokuro, I am immediately having vivid nightmares of the S.O.S. brigade when she’s talking about joining a club. Much to my dismay, it’s so much worse…for Sakura! Well all that fun and frivolity comes to a sudden stop when the school is visited by Dokuro’s baby sister, Zaruko.
WHO IS NINE YEARS OLD?! DA FUCK, JAPAN?! Because Dokuro broke protocol by not doing away with Sakura like her original mission indicated, she was to immediately go back with her sister and receive a penalty for her crimes. Meanwhile, everything on earth will go back to normal and no one will remember any of this mess. But Dokuro doesn’t want to leave because she loves living with Sakura. Now Sakura has a decision to make. He can either have Dokuro leave and never come back or continue having a loli angel live in his closet and decapitate him every other day. Sakura chooses the latter. But Zaruko ends up taking her away…only for Dokuro to escape. She ends up returning back to Sakura’s room and when he came back thinking things were going to go back to boring life as normal, he’s decapitated. Aw, so abnormality wins in the end!
SEASON TWO: Why is Dokuro’s hair teal-colored now? Oh who the fuck cares? It’s only two episodes! It’s just more random shenanigans. Only now, you’ve got both Dokuro and Zakuro living with Sakura. What else do I have to say, the final two episodes were just more of the same with Sakura being impaled every couple of minutes or so, Sakura striking out with Shizuki, and getting in all sorts of trouble caused by Dokuro. We even get a meaningless cameo from Sabato’s mother who tries to take her daughter back to their time but gives up by the end of the episode. And then mentions something about Dokuro being related to…oh who the fuck cares?! Finally we end up with a bizarre Valentine’s episode. And the series really doesn’t end on any kind of note. It’s just the final episode with no real conclusion and ended like any other regular episode. It’s been 12 years since this anime ever saw the light of day and let’s keep it that way. What the hell did I just watch?
Seriously, this show is just balls-to-the-wall insane. And this is the same person who found some sort of sense and sanity in watching something like Excel Saga. This is like if Super Milk Chan and Puni Puni Poemi had sex and this show was the product of that mess. And then you just fill it with the most absurd things in the world like people being decapitated, panty shots, side-boobs, nip-slips, poop jokes, diarrhea jokes, crude jokes, random cameos from Kim Jong Il and George W. Bush, and random students turning into real life animals (including a baboon, giraffe, and shiba inu). It was all quite insane. Only, AND ONLY IF you are feeling extra curious that I would recommend stumbling upon and watch this. If you’re not a fan of blood, I wouldn’t recommend it. I know the blood-shed that’s used is mostly supposed to be funny (I guess?), but there’s a lot of it. The animation is nothing too special. The comedy is kinda hit-and-miss with me. Then again, there are only 6 episodes and if you’re bored, go ahead and watch this. Okay, now that this nightmare is over, what’s the next anime I’m watching in this category? Nozomi Entertainment/Discotek/Shit made before Fall 1986, and go!
Marmalade Boy! Oh good, I’m always in the mood for a cute shoujo anime. Medea, it’s also surprise incest! Wait, WHAT?! DAMMIT 2019!

“Lupin, i have one more thing to ask of you. Let me have your name. Let me be Mrs. Lupin. It's not for the tabloids, I'm being serious. No matter how far away you are, all you have to do is hear the name Mrs. Lupin, and you'll know it's me. It'll be our own secret code. I want you to see it, Lupin. To watch me grow into a...good woman. I need to grow up into someone you can't live without.“
- Rebecca Rossellini, Lupin the Third (Ep. 26)
The Toonami Trending Rundown for January 20-21, 2018. It’s a night of ends and new beginnings as among other moments, Dragon Ball Super begins the Future Trunks saga, while Asta gets recruited by the Black Bulls, and of course, we reach the thrilling conclusion of Lupin the Third: Part IV.
On Twitter, Toonami would trend as with every show during their respective East Coast airings, as well Hunter x Hunter and Outlaw Star as well during their respective West Coast airings. Lupin The Third in particular trended both US and Worldwide, making sure it completed its current run on a high note. Meanwhile on Tumblr, Toonami would also trend as with Dragon Ball Super, DBZ, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and Hunter x Hunter.
This week’s feature was a game review of Animal Crossing Pocket Camp for the iOS and Android, as one of Nintendo’s first forays into conventional mobile devices. Interestingly enough, this was the first time Toonami has ever reviewed a game released on mobile devices, and was also reviewed by Dana Swanson, the voice of SARA, herself. It received a 7.5 out of 10 score.
youtube
As we begin seeing the English dub of the Future Trunks saga, those who watched ahead to where the sub is currently at will know that Toei has announced that the finale of the Universe Survival Saga, set to end in late March will serve as the series finale for Super. While this chapter of Dragon Ball will soon reach its conclusion, this most likely won’t be the end of the franchise, as Toei is presently hard at work producing the 20th feature film as well as mapping the franchise’s general path going forward, to say nothing about the manga, video games, and various other content for the future. Toei has hinted a potential continuation of the anime series down the line, so we’ll see what happens in the months and years ahead. Of course, we still have 84 episodes left to go until Toonami itself reaches that point, so this could allow the dub to catch up in time for the potential sequel, depending on how long this hiatus is among various other factors. Regardless of what happens, it’s been a great ride so far to see Dragon Ball continuing to shine both inside and outside Toonami’s scope, and I’m personally very confident on what the future of this great anime franchise is ahead.
And speaking of DBS, for those wanting to get more of your Dragon Ball fix, Arc System Works and Bandai Namco have just released the newest video game fighter to the franchise, Dragon Ball FighterZ, presently available on all major platforms except for the Switch.
To commemorate Lupin’s finale, Jose Argumedo and Discotek had another Q&A periscope livestream with several of the show’s staff and voice actors including Richard Epcar (co director and voice of Jigen), Ellyn Stern (co director and voice of several minor characters), Lex Lang (the voice of Goemon), Michelle Ruff (the voice of Fujiko), and Doug Erholtz (the voice of Zenigata).
Ever since Monkey Punch began publishing the original manga in 1967, Lupin the Third has grown to be a very illustrious media franchise, with numerous manga, anime, anime films and OVAs and the like released over the decades. Back in 2003, Adult Swim in its early days aired 26 episodes of Part 2, though episode 3 was skipped over for content issues, and the remaining 129 episodes of part 2 never aired for various reasons. While Lupin’s legacy among long time Adult Swim viewers and Toonami Faithful isn’t as large as some of Toonami and Adult Swim’s other highly acclaimed and well requested classics, the series still is pretty well regarded among fans and the Toonami crew to this day, and it perhaps comes as no surprise that Lupin was looked into to make a comeback to the better cartoon show, especially with the series having a renaissance on the Japanese TV scene.
In 2016, Toonami attempted to bring Lupin back with The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, following the end of Michiko and Hatchin’s run (both series were directed by Sayo Yamamoto, whom would also go on to create Yuri on Ice) however issues regarding nudity (ie. too many boobies to censor) would have required Toonami to heavily chop the show’s content into bits barring objections from the network and advertisers, forcing them to choose an encore run of Samurai Champloo instead. While Toonami found a way to air the likes of Black Lagoon, Hellsing, Kill la Kill, and soon episode 23 of Outlaw Star with as little edits as they could to appease the network and advertisers in that regard, Toonami decided that that the amount of censoring needed that time around just wasn’t worth it.
But Toonami and Lupin fans would not give up, as over a year later, Lupin would eventually find its way back onto Adult Swim, as Toonami partnered up with Discotek to bring in the newest edition of the main Lupin series in part IV, the first acquisition for Toonami from Discotek and the first from TMS since 2003. While Discotek has been around since 2005, considering that they mainly focus on classic titles and underrated gems, including helping to bring IGPX DVDs back into production, and it wasn’t until 2016 with Lupin that they started producing dubs, its not a surprise that this company was under the radar from many fans and perhaps even the Toonami crew as an acquisition partner for so long. Then again, classics and underrated gems are sometimes just what Toonami needs.
One of the earliest hints that this was going to occur was when Jason released a poll to gauge interest on shorter shows like Tokyo Ghoul, Mob Psycho 100, and Lupin potentially airing on the block. While industry politics among other factors between Toonami and the distributors have unfortunately dashed Mob’s Toonami hopes for now, Tokyo Ghoul would get its shot on March, while Lupin would finally make its return on June 17, 2017 as Toonami premiered the English Dub premiere of Part IV.
26 episodes of Lupin and his crew doing what they do best and avoiding Zenigata to do so, finding love with Rebecca, and solving the mystery of Leonardo Di Vinci, and now this season is in the books. During Part IV’s run, the hashtag #LupinThe3rd trended in the US during all but 2 weeks of its run as well as worldwide during the season finale. The show did not produce any character trends or trended on tumblr during its run.
For those wanting to check out more Lupin in the interim, Discotek has been hard at work producing and re-releasing Blu-rays and DVDs of Lupin’s previous installments and several films, so feel free to check those out. And of course, this won’t be end of Lupin as TMS and Telecom Animation Film are presently working on a part V to the franchise, set to premiere in Japan this upcoming April as Lupin and the gang travel to France, the home of Lupin’s grandfather. The sub will be simulcasted on Crunchyroll and Hulu.
No word yet if and when Discotek will be tasked to dub the new season or if Toonami will pick up this new installment down the line, but we’ll see what happens. As I would say with every potential show and every successful Toonami show looking to return for a continuation, if you wish to see Lupin return for Part V and perhaps beyond, keep supporting the show by legal means and to send your show recommendations to Toonami's Facebook and Tumblr message boxes as well as letting Discotek know in their respective outlets.
youtube
Regardless of what happens, Lupin’s return was quite a fun ride for both fans watching since Adult Swim’s early days (and perhaps even before then) and the new fans it gained along the way, and I’m sure I can speak for every fan that we’re all looking forward to what adventures Lupin and the crew will be taking in the future. So until then, Arrivederci, Lupin, and hope to see you again soon.
As previously mentioned, there was a show that was originally supposed to replace Lupin on the schedule, but unfortunately Toonami and the distributors ran into some legal issues preventing a broadcast, delaying the show announcement and premiere to a future date. We’ll keep you posted on when it does happen as well as any other incoming shows in the year to come, but in the meantime, Space Dandy will be having an encore run beginning tonight at 2:30 am, while Naruto Shippuden and Outlaw Star also move up to 1:30 and 2 am respectively in the interim. Until then, see you again next week and stay dandy, baby.

4/19/2019, 3:30PM: Time to Unwind
As I stepped out of the interview room once again, I felt a small sense of relief. Finally, I had some time to kick back relax! I quickly hurried downstairs to a place that I probably shouldn’t be heading, knowing myself: The Dealer’s Room.
Inside, I scanned the many booths, which were packed with merchandise. DVDs, Blu-Rays, toys, video games, art books! Whatever you were looking for, there was a good chance that you’d find it here.
Well… for the most part.
I quickly learned that there are two reliable ways to make a dealer balk. “Would you happen to have anything from Sakura Wars?” I asked one, and received a look of utter bewilderment. Time and again, this happened as I sought out more merchandise from the twenty-three-year-old series.
Of course, this didn’t bring anywhere near as many odd looks as my inquiries for specifically bad anime.
“Why… would you want that?” one vendor asked in confusion, their head tilting just a bit before I explained the fun of Bad Anime Night. Once they clued in, they seemed eager to show the usual favorites: Garzey’s Wing, Photon, Darkside Blues… all promising, all glorious trash. Still, they weren’t exactly titles that tickled my dark side.
Funny enough, it was Discotek Media’s booth that proved to be the source for a new title that was bad enough to make audiences weep and wail as they ran for the exits. A cruel smirk played across my lips, as the vendor and her partner chatted on which shows would be bad enough to be considered bad for you. The partner piped up a moment later, saying “I hope you don’t mind losing friends over this one,” as he handed over a copy of Karate Master. I couldn’t help but smile brightly as I responded with “If they are still my friends at the end of the night, I’m doing it wrong!”
Afterwards, it was time to find some, well… good stuff. And find it, I did, as I scooped up titles that somehow eluded my collection. K-On!, Squid Girl, Case Closed, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid… I quickly found my bag filled to bursting with a cavalcade of modern classics.
With my itch to spend thoroughly scratched, I figured it was time to visit an old friend. I made my way to the Science Fiction Continuum booth, where Brian T. Price was working. Price is somewhat of an icon for the convention, as he hosts Totally Subversive Toons and Bad Anime, Bad! Every year to great fanfare. When I stopped by, there was a brief lull in the customer flow. I popped over and we began to chat. As we talked, it became increasingly clear that Price was planning something big for the tenth anniversary of Bad Anime, Bad! I wasn’t sure what at that point, but I was expecting a truly magnificent train wreck, which would make the crowd giggle and recoil at the same time.
Our meeting didn’t last too long, though, as the booth began to grow busy again. We said our farewells, and returned to our normal routines.
Well, as normal as Anime Boston gets, anyway.
4/19/2019, 4:45PM: Dinner and a Demo
By quarter of five, I had gotten my shop on, and decided to hurry out of the hall before I decided to buy something I’d regret, like that Sakura Shinguji cel priced at $200. With MIYAVI’s concert just over an hour away, it felt like the best course of action would be to grab a bite to eat. With dinner on my mind, I made a hasty trek to Eataly’s La Pizza & La Pasta.
“Party of one,” I said to the hostess, who directed me to the bar. As I took my seat, the barkeeper prepared a glass of water, as well as a serving of bread and olive oil. It was a lovely beginning to the meal, with the pillowy bread acting as a delectable sponge for the fragrant oil. It’s a simple treat that I’ll never not crave from time to time.
As the bartender circled back, I placed an order for a simple Margherita pizza. I pulled out my phone and began to go over the day’s biggest news developments. I breathed a small sigh of relief, noticing that the news coming from both Anime Boston and Sakura Con was fairly light this time around.
Within a few minutes, the server came around with my pizza. It’s a simple dish: San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil, served on a wood-fired crust. Still, as the saying goes, simple is often best.
The sweetness of the tomatoes played beautifully with the slightly bitter char on the crust, which helped to accent the creaminess of the cheese. The basil offered a nice fragrant note that helped to really elevate the entire dish to perfection. I smiled a little as I savored each bite, just losing myself in the moment of a delightful, relaxing meal during a busy weekend.
I checked my phone as I stepped out of Eataly, noticing that I had a message from a colleague who was hanging out in the Panelists’ room. I swiped over to my clock: 5:25 PM. Plenty of time.
I quickly trekked back into the Hynes, toward the room. I paused for a moment when I arrived, remarking at how quiet everything was inside. It took a moment, but I clued in to two gentlemen were seated and chatting: BH Pierce and YouTuber Professor Otaku.
We exchanged greetings, and got to talking shop. First, we discussed our plans for the weekend, though the conversation quickly moved toward Big Eyes, Small Brains. We discussed the fundamentals behind the game’s systems and the world, as they peeked at a preview copy of the book. Sadly, time was running short for all of us, as Professor Otaku had a panel coming up, Pierce had to prep for his own panel that evening, and I had to make my way toward the auditorium for MIYAVI’s concert.
We said a quick farewell, as we parted ways. Though our meeting was brief, it was great to meet a few more folks in this lively community.

4/19/2019, 8:30PM, An Annual Tradition
As MIYAVI left the stage, the room was left eagerly chattering, their ears still ringing from the aural experience that just occurred. For me, though, the night was still young. I wanted to check out one final panel for the evening. Seth, meanwhile, was heading for a screening of Lupin The Third: The Mystery of Mamo.
We parted ways once more, each to take on our tasks for the evening. Before anything, though, I had to see to a little tradition of mine.
Every year, since Anime Boston has been in the Hynes, I’ve made it a point to close off my first night with a particular treat from Au Bon Pain. I can’t let a year pass without enjoying one of their chocolate croissants.
I scurried out of the convention center, my bad growing heavy around my shoulder, as I stole my way to the familiar yellow storefront that waited just outside. I hurried to the pasty case, where I found the treat was seeking. I plucked one from its resting place, and hurried to the counter, where I ordered an iced coffee, paid the clerk, and found a place to sit.
Now, the year was complete for me. Au bon Pain’s chocolate croissants are a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. These sweet treats are flaky, tender, filled with chocolate, and coated in powdered sugar. With each bite, I could feel the weariness of the day starting to leave me. Sweet chocolate mixed with the bitter coffee, to produce a flavor that is nothing short of heavenly, in my books.
Alas, like most pleasures, it was fleeting. A few minutes later, I found myself finishing the last bite, my eyes again set toward the towering structure that awaited just outside.

Note: We covered this event in-detail in a standalone feature, so feel free to check that out for the details! For now, enjoy a few photos.
4/19/2019, 10:00PM, The End of the Evening
I couldn’t help but take a moment to watch in awe, as the packed room calmly filed out into the hallways. Deep down, I had to know that folks would be active even now, but it never ceased to amaze me at just how many there were every year. I let out a small smile and hoisted up my bag. It was time to get some work in for the evening. I slunk back to the Sheraton, and made my way to the elevator, then to my cozy, fourteenth-floor room. The weariness of the day finally hit me, as I collapsed into dead weight on my bed. I lazily went through the daily news reports, which had been arriving from friends and colleagues alike through the day, and got to work. It wouldn’t be long after that, though, that sleep would claim me.
As the clock struck one, consciousness eluded me. It was time to get some rest, for tomorrow would bring about a few moments that I’d never forget.
Anime Boston 2019 Travelogue, 4/18/2019 (Evening): Sound and Fury 4/19/2019, 3:30PM: Time to Unwind As I stepped out of the interview room once again, I felt a small sense of relief.

During the later months of 2007 they began to have significant marital problems, resulting in Mr. Montgomery being charged with misdemeanor domestic violence. Ms. The buffet costs just $12.75 at lunch and $16.75 at dinner. The Granddaddy of Super Robots Returns with Mazinger Z/Infinity
It's no exaggeration to say that Go Nagai's Mazinger Z made history in 1972. The mecha series created tropes we now take for granted in our giant robot entertainment, starting with the very simple act of actually putting the pilot inside the robot instead of giving them a remote control or making them hang on for dear life. This, plus the creation of the now-common "Rocket Punch" attack, singlehandedly ushered in the era of Super Robots in mecha anime.
It's safe to say that without the big black iron castle in the sky, modern mecha entertainment as we know it -- from Gundam and Evangelion to Gurren Lagann and even Pacific Rim -- would not exist.
This is all very impressive, but it also means Mazinger Z/Infinity had a massive task before it: returning to the genre it created after 45 years of evolution, and integrating itself into what the super robot style has become while still maintaining its heart. The Mazinger franchise has seen several remakes and reimaginings over the years, safe in their own Alternate Universe bubbles... but Infinity is an official sequel. And, to that end, it had to be done right or not at all.
The Return
Mazinger Z/Infinity picks up where the original 1970s franchise left off, thanks to a brief montage of scenes from the original series created to place the story in the modern day. It's been ten years since Dr. Hell and his army of strange (and occasionally highly culturally ill-advised) generals were defeated. In the decade since, photon power is fueling the world, Sayaka Yumi has taken over her father's company, and Koji Kabuto has left his hot-blooded days behind to become a scientist.
Then comes the discovery of a lifetime: an enormous Mazin, so big that Mazinger Z could pilot it. And inside, a mysterious glowing girl named Lisa. (Because let's face it, one of the big changes to mecha anime is that it now has to include a Mysterious Glowing Girl.)
Meanwhile, kikaiju (mecha-beasts or robeasts in other localizations) are back -- like, big time. Not just our main two Doublas and Garada. Like, they're all back. All the garbage tier ones, too. Yep, even the Santa robot with the missile-launching whip. They're all there. And Dr. Hell is back with them, along with Baron Ashura and Count Brocken.
What they're all doing here now is a mystery, but it seems tied to the new, giant Mazin. Called "Infinity" by the lab, the giant robot seems to have otherworldly powers. But no one is quite sure what they are... only that, once they are unleashed, the world as we know it could end.
Ten (and 45) Years Later
There is one minor "problem" (in Big Air Quotes) with Infinity, in that it requires some degree of prior knowledge. It's not a reboot or a retelling, of which we've had (and will continue to have) many. The "Previously On..." segment of the movie is only as long as Ichiro Mizuki's performance of the TV-length opening, and even that is made up primarily of out-of-context clips. So if you're looking to this as a gateway for Mazinger viewing, that's probably not the way to go.
Fortunately, we're in a good position now, where multiple versions of the Mazinger story are readily and legally available. The clearest and completest way to approach Infinity is having watched all of the original Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger... which, long as they are and as full of filler as they are, is an understandably massive task just for one two-hour feature. Fortunately, familiarity with Tranzor Z or Super Robot Wars, plus some willingness to be along for the ride, will get you there.
As it's a typical Mazinger Z story (just cranked up to 11), it won't be completely inaccessible to new viewers. But much of the B story -- Tetsuya and Jun's relationship, Koji and Sayaka's non-relationship, and so on -- will feel under-explained. Long-time viewers will be well aware of their interpersonal soap operas, though, and more than likely happy to see something actually done about them.
On the plus side, the film is littered with treats for well-versed fans: brief cameos from connected works, the return of the under-appreciated Misato from the original series, a nod to a well-loved character lost during the series, and a few really weird sight gags.
Mastering Infinity
Sumire Uesaka's turn as Lisa, the requisite McGuffin Girl, will likely divide audiences. Purists may be put off as she's a decidedly new element and no efforts are made to disguise her as anything else. But the decision to keep her presence from forcing an awkward love triangle -- and, in fact, making her instrumental to getting Koji to do something about his feelings for Sayaka -- makes her a fun and welcome presence if you immerse yourself in the film. Her personal Rule of Cool scene is, additionally, frankly gorgeous.
The new cast does an amazing job of making you completely forget that they're a new cast. A keen ear may catch Romi Park as half of Baron Ashura or Kappei Yamaguchi as Boss's sidekick Mucha, but the vocal likenesses are so on target that that won't be your main concern at any point.
Too, the art style is gorgeous -- clearly with the earmarks of Nagai's character designs, but with a slick new look that makes the characters shine on a big screen.
We Love Giant Robots
In Fathom Events' pre-show clips, the creators of Infinity made it clear that the name of this game is "Entertainment." There's a story, and there's emotion, and there's a payoff (especially if you're a long-term fan). But at its heart, Mazinger Z/Infinity is about watching robots beat up other robots.
The rogues' gallery of kikaiju have received a major 21st century facelift, making even the most dubious-looking design far more dangerous than its 1970s form. Whether it's Koji beating up a robeast with another robeast or Z and Infinity facing off in a battle of Gainaxian proportions, the battle sequences are just lovely. Wild and experimental camera angles accentuate what must have been a huge amount of "what-if" brainstorming, as our heroes' robots use and combine every attack in their arsenal to turn familiar attacks into surprise moves.
Really, that is what we're here for: the edge-of-your-seat moment as you watch a bigger, bolder, better version of the robot fights you grew up loving. The action direction was clearly done with love and creativity, and is frankly mind-blowing. The plot, as nice as it is, could easily be addressed in a typical half-hour episode... and that's all right. No one watches Mazinger Z for plot twists. We watch it to heroes save the day with as much mechanical carnage as possible.
In Conclusion
Mazinger Z/Infinity is everything a big screen super robot movie ought to be: loud, action-packed, ridiculously over-the-top, and with a heart full of burning blood. The plot can be as basic and straightforward as you like -- and at the end of everything, the whole explosive mess is really just about a relationship between two people -- as long as it has those elements at its core. Infinity is all that it ought to be, and the huge-yet-tidy ending we never knew we were waiting for.
