Dry for now, but things could get a bit ‘scarier’ towards Halloween! Atlanta, TX Forecast: October 19th, 2018

It has been messy over the past several weeks across the ArkLaTex. Due to all of the heavy rain over the past two months, we have gone from having an extreme drought, to not having a drought at all!

This weekend, we’re going to be a bit warmer than what we have been over the last week! Rain and clouds will be completely gone on Saturday. If you don’t have outdoor plans, make some. We will be in the upper 70’s, with winds out of the west-northwest. The image below shows a high-pressure system centered to our south and west. This will allow a cooler breeze to blow into our area. I would definitely recommend opening your windows this weekend!

This weekend is going to be picture-perfect. Along with the warmer temperatures, we will also remain dry! If you are Trick-or-Treating this weekend, the weather will definitely be a treat. Below, the latest run of the GFS shows that we remain dry through the ENTIRE weekend! This is a sight for sore eyes! Don’t get too comfortable with it! More rain is headed back into northeast Texas next week.

The warmer weather is going to linger into the first half of the work week next week. As we go overnight Tuesday, our next weather system begins to move into the Four State Region. A cold front will approach our area from the northwest. This will increases our rain chances from Tuesday night through Wednesday evening. A future projection of the radar image from the EMCWF below shows a line of showers and storms moving through during the morning hours on Wednesday, October 31st. As of now, a severe weather outbreak is not expected. However, this time of year is when we usually start to see more severe weather impact our areas. I do expect that we could see some gusty winds, heavy rainfall in heavier storms, in addition to thunder and lightning. Most of the rain should move out by the evening hours! However, it wouldn’t hurt to bring the umbrella along just in case a rogue shower lingers behind!

After this front passes, we will begin to cool off once again. This time of year, our highs our usually in the lower 70’s, with our lows in the lower 50’s and upper 40’s. Thursday, highs will drop by a good 5 to 10 degrees across the area. On Friday, we will struggle to make it into the upper 50’s! Saturday morning will be the coldest morning of the season so far! Looking at the model below, many of us in Cass County will drop down into the 30’s! This is still about a week out, so just exactly how cold we get could change.

The image below is more of an extended outlook at our temperatures and precipitation. It looks like we are going to start November off a little on the wet and chilly side. This also alludes that we will have an unsettled pattern, meaning more weather systems moving through our area. This could also mean an increase in severe weather.

Severe weather season lasts year-round. Here in the south, we see an increase in severe weather from late October through December. As our pattern become more unsettled, the potential to see severe weather increases. Now would not be a bad time to figure out a safety plan for you and your family for when severe weather does move your way! Also be sure that you have some way to receive severe weather alerts on your mobile devices!

So here is my forecast for Atlanta Texas for the next 7 Days.

Saturday (10/27): Saturday will be a picture-perfect day across the region. We will remain sunny, with just a passing cloud or two in the morning. We will top out at 78 degrees on Saturday, with winds out of the west between 8 to 12 MPH. Our overnight low will get down to 57 degrees.

Sunday (10/28): Sunday will be identical to Saturday. With sunny skies, we will top out at a warm 82 degrees, with winds shifting out of the southwest between 8 to 12 MPH. Sunday night will be a little warmer, with a low of 61 degrees.

Monday (10/29): We will remain warm for Monday, topping out at 80 degrees! We will have a few passing clouds throughout the day, but our rain chances will remain at 0%. Winds will be out of the south-southwest between 15 to 20 MPH, with a few higher gusts between 25 and 30 MPH. Overnight temperatures will drop down to 62 degrees.

Tuesday (10/30): Clouds will increase throughout the day on Tuesday. That will not keep our high temperature from reaching 80 degrees once again on Tuesday. Rain chances will increase throughout the day. Scattered showers and storms become more numerous Tuesday night. Temperatures overnight will drop down to 65 degrees.

Wednesday Halloween! (10/31): Rain will stick around throughout the day on Wednesday. We will see anywhere between 0.50” and 1.00” between Tuesday night and Wednesday night. Due to the rain, we will be cooler at a high of 72. Winds could be gusty in heavier showers and storms, but they will shift from the southwest to the west-northwest between 8 to 12 MPH. Wednesday night will remain cloudy for trick-or-treating, but the rain should be gone for the most part. We will drop down to 60 overnight.

Thursday (11/01): Thursday will be nearly 10 degrees cooler! We will top out at 63 degrees, becoming partly sunny later in the day. Winds will be out of the west between 4 to 8 MPH. Skies will become partly cloudy overnight as we bottom out near 43 degrees.

Friday (11/02): On Friday, we will struggle to hit our high of 60 degrees. We will remain mostly sunny with variable winds around 5 MPH. We could see a stray shower or storm as our next storm system approaches. Our overnight low on Friday will drop down to 38.

LHR Affects Ravencoin HASHRATE On This 3080 Ti?

a no3d i chill x3 rtx 3080 ti and yeah this graphics card is quite interesting and anyways in this video we're gonna be trying out the ethereum hash rate ravencoin and ergo and we're gonna see how it's gonna fare in terms of power consumption and uh yeah all that stuff i have a separate power supply to see how much the gpu is taking so we're going to see how that all goes within this video hopefully you guys enjoy and i'll also update the hash rate spreadsheet that i have on google docs so link down below you guys may have saw the video where i already tested out a 3080ti founders edition and so i got a bunch of those hashrates already thank you to techshinji he is another youtuber who let me remote in to test that 3080ti so link down below to tech shinji's channel thank you so much man but anyways guys in this video i received this i chill x3 3080 ti from mineshop.eu and it looks like they got a couple of gpus for sale on their website as we speak looks like they have a 30 80 amp holo for sale i'm not quite sure if that's lhr or non-lhr but guys go check them out link down below mineshop.eu thank you so much all right so before i plug in the gpu i just want to show you guys something when i unboxed it the no3d they said here the product is not designed for crypto mining we reserve the right to void the warranty if there's any damage associated with this application no3d so i found that to be pretty funny it was the anti-static bag around this card and i just had to laugh and i posted it on instagram and a bunch of you guys laughed as well but anyways let me just flip it around here so you guys can see what else is going on with this graphics card it's just it's quite interesting there's a lot going on and uh i'll show you something in a sec here but i'm just showing you the back side of it so you guys can see what this gpu is all about and there's the two eight pins for power and here is the io this thing is extremely heavy it's it's quite amazing and i know this is gonna be lit up in terms of the rgb or the light bar as you guys can see on the box that looks pretty cool and then it also came with this like plastic insert that goes onto the back here i guess this is going to be lit up in terms of there must be rgb on the back here and then i had to screw it in and so there's another insert here it's just clear without the x3 marking so i thought that was pretty interesting pretty interesting anyways guys without further ado let me go ahead i'm going to plug it into my test mining rig here i have two 360s right now so i'm going to remove both and we're going to put the 3080ti on a gpu risers.com riser brand spanking new and also on a hp server psu this is from parallel miner using a 1200 watt psu going into a kilowatt meter that you guys can see right there all right so you guys will see the 3080 ti on there right now oh all right so it's been about about a week now i've been playing around with this 3080 ti and i've been kind of just scratching my head figuring out why i cannot get 80 mega hash or more on this 380 ti specifically and i will show you guys my results right now it's it's pretty sporadic between like 68 69 mega hash to like 73 mega hash and here are my settings so let me just talk with you all and what i've figured out with this card specifically and i know a lot of others have gotten different results out there with the 3080 ti and so here are the settings that i was able to achieve no matter what i did doing minus like 502 you know plus 100 or even like you know going from 100 to 200 300 400 500 600 and so on in terms of the memory as i was going higher in the memory i was losing mega hash alright so i don't know if that happened to you guys but let me know down below what 3080 ti that you guys have and let me know what settings you did in order to achieve whatever mega hash that you are able to get on your 3080 ti and i just want to show you like the id in terms of the tech power app it shows 2208 so i think that's the normal id for this you know this model of 38dti so you know we got we can get 71 now it's only been running for about 30 minutes now but you can look at my also memory temperatures which is 88 degrees celsius so that's totally fine and i'm using the latest version of nb miner 39.2 with the nvidia driver 471. 11 okay and no matter what i've tried so now i'm getting 73 now but then it's gonna go back to like 69 68 mega hash it just goes all over the place so there you go i i've tried even like if i go back to stock actually before i do that i want to show you the power consumption we are at the gpu or at the wall it says it's like you know 298 306 it jumps around but in the software it shows 267 okay or for what i'm able to achieve now if i just put everything back to stock okay and now also if i bring up the fan back up because i don't want it to get too hot so at the stock power now uh yeah it's going to change a bit i want to know from you all like if you guys have tested out the latest version of the nb miner with the dash lhr or even without it because i know nv miner now can do the lhr unlock without adding the dash lhr in the batch file okay so yeah that's something let me know down below what you guys get in terms of the mega hash but yeah maybe specifically this no3d i chill x3 which is really cool by the way i don't know what you guys think about this cooler but man it's got interesting rgb lighting on the back here with the little plastic piece i showed you guys earlier it looks like i can change this out if i wanted but i think i like the x3 logo one on it and then it's got the i chill light bar at the top which seems pretty cool but otherwise i don't really care about that i care about the the silicon i guess on this gpu specifically and i'm curious to know if maybe if there is a possibly another revision of the lhr as i think this 380 ti is maybe really recent in terms of manufacturing and okay so anyways just to show you guys 72 mega hash we got up there at about 267 watts and this is at 100 power this is just stock okay with 80 fan and you can see at the wall nothing has really changed we are still at 300 and around 300 watts for this gpu so i don't know what's going on maybe you guys can let me know if there's anything else i can try i did try doing ddu okay on this whole machine in windows i got rid of the nvidia driver installed brand new i did that reinstalled msi afterburner i even tried the latest nvidia driver just to see if that would unlock it maybe even more but no that didn't help at all i i don't know if i'm doing something wrong i tried dash lhr 68 lhr 69 lhr 70. I even tried 71 72 and so on just to see if i could get any better results and like i said earlier i tried all the different numbers in terms of the core in terms of the memory it seems like as i was getting higher memory it was getting worse mega hash so yeah i i just want to know like this is a really interesting card and i've seen people get 80. and there's someone on my discord that was able to get 85 on an evga for the win 3 edition card so i don't know what's up with that i don't know if that has a specific maybe different lhr method from the manufacturer but i want to know from you guys in terms of the brands in terms of the model in terms of the overclocks that you guys are able to use on your 3080ti let me know down below hopefully that will help others out there and yeah i've seen all different types of reports of different hash rates for these 38 dtis and yeah i'm just totally confused as to why this one whatever settings i try to do it just cannot get to the number that i've seen other people get all right so anyways let me know what you guys think i now want to try ergo and ravencoin so let's do ergo first i'll be right back all right we are mining ergo some of you guys were wondering maybe what the power consumption is of the motherboard and the power supply for the motherboard ssd ram cpu all that it's drawing about 21 20 20 watts right now okay and now we're mining ergo on this 3080 ti we're using about 327 watts at the wall i think this hp server psu is maybe not as efficient at the lower levels of power consumption maybe more towards 50 then we'll get more efficiency there but anyways i want to show you guys the ergo hash rate that i can achieve on this 3080 ti 272.5 mega hash on the auto lycos algorithm and the power consumption according to the software says 289 watts and then the memory temperature that some of you may want to know is about 82 degrees celsius so that's pretty good at 80 fan my ambient temperature right now where i am doing this video is it's pretty cool so this the temperature the memory temperature is on this 380ti it's not bad but i'm assuming once it gets hotter i guess during the summer time and now that fall is coming uh you know i won't know and until it gets hotter during the day but anyways that's the ergo hash rate i mean that's really good honestly i'm gonna take the ethereum hash rate the ergo hash rate and the raven coin hash rate in a second here and see what is the most profitable algorithm on this 380 ti that we achieved today okay and here are my overclock settings just in case some people are curious i was able to do 83 power limit minus 100 on the core and plus 1370 on the memory and 80 fan and that is the mega hash that i'm able to achieve on this card all right guys let's do ravencoin all right i have reason to believe that the no3d i chill x3 3080 ti is also like further lhred and maybe they figured out on the ravencoin algorithm kapow because i know for a fact that these 380 ti's are supposed to get above 50 megahash at stock power limit all right and you can see here i just put plus 150 core zero memory i'll show you guys something funny in a second here to show that when i add more memory the mega hash will start going lower so let me just show you guys that right now let me show you the initial power consumption 328 watts and the tdp of this thing is supposed to be 350 watts so isn't it theoretically supposed to be taking up the full power consumption now i wonder if the lhr is already activated because you can see here the tdp is uh 83.9 83 tdp right now even though i have the 100 power limit set and i have tried uninstalling afterburner clean install twice now with a clean install of the driver as well i did ddu and everything and this gpu cannot get above i can't get past 43 or 44 mega hash on this thing so let me just show you guys something let me put this up to let's just say 1000 memory just a moderate 1000 okay we're going to hit check i'm not going to change anything else and i want to show you guys here the i guess the memory controller load it was at a hundred okay it was at 100 before but when i just changed it to a thousand it's now down to about 87 percent now we're gonna see the hash rate drop all right we were at like 43. 44 now we're going to 42 and 42.8 and it's continuing to go lower 42.67 so like do you guys think that this card is lhred like further on ravencoin is it just me or am i going crazy because i don't know from from what i've been seeing out there i've been seeing that this card is supposed to get about 50 to like 56 mega hash mining ravencoin on a 3080 ti so has no 3d figured out a lhr version like number five or something like just i don't know what's going on this is really weird we're getting limited on mining raven coin on this gpu so we weren't getting limited it seems on ergo you guys saw that earlier right on ergo and then of course on ethereum we were getting limited but i wasn't able to achieve the you know the 80 plus mega hash and i was actually reading online there's other people here that tested the uh the i chill x3 right here okay the inno 3d rtx 3080 i chill x4 actually not the x3 x4 but the same brand no 3d and you can see here that they were only able to achieve about 58 mega hash and uh doing the dash lhr 68 okay and actually if we scroll down they say at the end here they say here note that your results may vary depending on their gpu model overclocking settings and temperatures i mean i've said that before and our case our rtx 3080ti should be getting 82 mega hash but our base hash rate was only around 42 which then improved to 62 after the lhr 68 update so you see that they talk about even 82 mega hash but their inno 3d was only able to get up to about 62 and then i was able to only get it to about 73 max and it was always fluctuating between you know 68 69 to 73. So i think this inno 3d brand they figured out how to like limit ravencoin on this gpu on the 3080 ti i want to know what you guys think let me know if any of you have this no3d model specifically and maybe like another chinese brand perhaps like a gain word card that maybe those also have the lhr maybe just like a further revision of the light hash rate lock on these cards for different algorithms now maybe it's not just ethereum now it's ravencore am i just going crazy i want to know what you guys think down below please post your results of you know what brand gpu you have what overclock settings you guys use power limits memory core clock fan speed what have you but the most important thing is to also put down the model which you guys have a 3080 ti and please let me know what results you guys can get let's say on ethereum ravencoin as well and ergo so that you know other people can see this as well if people are watching this and reading the comments it should help those that are maybe wanting to buy these gpus so would i buy this ino 3d i chill x3 3080ti no at this point no because it looks like in my experience limited on mining ravencoin so actually if i just go back to like 100 memory and gonna hit plus there we should theoretically then see the hash rate start to rise okay so yeah like we're getting limited here and also the memory controller went back up to a hundred all right it was uh it was uh at 80 something 88 87 before you guys can see here but now i just changed it and now the mega hash is going back up alright so tell me are we not limited or lhred on this 3080 ti on ravencoin very strange very strange anyways i just want to end off with profitability here i have the raven coin auto lycos and ethereum entered in here in terms of the hash rate that i can achieve on this 3080 ti i'm gonna hit calculate there and we're gonna go down and it says ergo is the most profitable on this and no 3d 3080 ti and then ethereum is the next one at uh looks like 40 cents 30 cents less than ergo and then ravencoin is a little bit further down at about another dollar less it seems okay anyways guys let me know your thoughts about this no3d 3080 ti and if you guys have seen similar results that i have and i know there are many varying 3080 ti results out there but yeah i've been testing this card for a very long time now and i've tried many different things to make sure that i'm like doing this right and correct and i'm not going crazy it feels like i'm going crazy let me know what you guys think down below i appreciate you all let me know your thoughts i'll see you guys in the next video have a good one and peace out Read the full article

Yessss I love it. Cold air is a blessing.

For coffee, I put a ton of creamer in. Tea is just a no for me.

Yes! A bonsai, a couple cacti, and an aloe vera.

8 - what artistic medium do you use to express your feelings?

Does writing count??? I’m not very artistic 😅 but I consider myself a decent writer and poet. I feel like words are the easiest way to explain yourself so others can understand you better. It’s specific. Painting and drawing, etc. are also good too of course, I’m just not any good at them 😂 and I feel like they’re a bit more questionable. They have different meanings to people. But that’s what allows people to connect over them; seeing different viewpoints of the same thing. It kind of shows what type of person you are.

My side or my back. I can’t do stomach 😂 it’s just too uncomfortable for me.

Hm. I don’t really know. I guess Neptune or Uranus??? They’re pretty.

TBH I don’t even know who my best friend is anymore lately Well it would probably be a bit of a mess 😂 but messy in an organized way??? We’re pretty tidy people, at least when it comes to our rooms, but we (or I, at least) am still a little bit cluttery. I think it would look nice. Not necessarily modern, but just kind of homely.

Spaghetti & meatballs OR chicken alfredo. Probably spaghetti and meatballs though.

God they just brought it up today. I swear I’m not as stupid as they make me seem though!!!!! So one time at lunch (like YEARS ago) they were talking about sports and I wasn’t really paying attention (because I’m not a sports person) and they asked me something and I think I said, “I’m not into baseball.” And of course with my luck they were talking about football. So :)))) There are always exaggerations about how I must think a homerun is in basketball, etc.

20 - what’s your favorite eye color?

I mean…it doesn’t really matter to me?? I don’t like thinking about eyes which you already know, so I’ve never really considered a favorite eye color. But I hateeeee the colored contacts people wear, especially when they wear two different colors (one of my friend’s ex-boyfriends used to wear one silver and one bright green one and it was hideous). Anyway, if I had to choose a color, I guess I’d say brown. It’s under-appreciated sometimes 🙂

22 - are you a morning person?

It fluctuates. Sometimes I am, sometimes I’m not. Especially if the reason I’m waking up is to go to something I don’t want to do, then I am NOT a morning person at all.

Honestly, probably not. I just really don’t trust people to keep their lips zipped or to not judge me.

My oldest pair of shoes rn are probably the ones I’m wearing (or at least they look the oldest since I wear them pretty much daily). They’re black and white cheetah print converse, with cheetah eyes on the side. They’re super comfortable.

Both are nice, but I like sunsets better. It’s the end of the day, time to rest, and it just looks cooler imo. More fiery.

In all honesty, I don’t think so. I get scared easily, but I wouldn’t say I’ve been truly terrified.

Another thing: my brother doesn’t flush the toilet :)))) and that drives me insane. Another one: people who spit on you when they talk. People in band who, rather than not playing on the parts they don’t know and working on them later, just play whatever they want and mess everyone up. People who don’t put things back where they found them. People who nitpick every little thing about something that someone else did. I could just keep going on.

I’m just gonna choose the ring I wear all the time. I got it at the fair, it was only $12 😂 it doesn’t really hold much meaning, I just like having it so I can fidget with it when I’m nervous or something.

I’m on the fence actually 😕 it’s not like I hate them with a burning passion or anything but I think they’re kinda milking it for all it’s worth at this point, which usually happens with movies.

3 white walls and a light bluish tealish wall (with a border of music notes in silver paint on the teal wall). I got to redecorate my room a couple years ago for my birthday and I love the color blue but I didn’t want something that would darken the room (although I keep my curtains mostly closed lol). The music notes were from a piece I played that year in the school band, it was my favorite.

I’m a procrastinator but I do get good grades 😁 I’ve never had an -A or lower. And I’m kind of a teacher’s pet 😂

I can’t really think of any specific ones (???? maybe I’m just being dumb ????) but I do like the idea of them.

Ehhh, I’m not exactly an art buff, so idk what to say. I think that as long as it carries emotion and makes the viewer feel something or think of something, then it must be pretty good. The style doesn’t define what story it tells, it just helps set the mood.

I haven’t really traveled so I’m gonna have to skip this 😶

The past. I’d like to do some things differently. Be a better person. Make myself become a better person and have better habits. The future can still be changed but my past is set in stone. The Beatles. Almost every song they ever put out was great. They became the biggest influencers on music in the last century and they did it in just a few years. Most musicians work their whole lives to have an ounce of the influence and raw talent each of them had. Plus they had an incredible effect on culture, notably helping facilitate the change that came from youth for the first time having enough money to buy what they wanted, not what they got from older people. The youth got to decide what they wanted and they wanted the Beatles. Not just the music but their fashion, art, movies and so on.

It's a pun on "a face in the crowd" which is a saying about being unknown and hidden in plain sight and I felt like this applied to my experience with being asexual. Also I typed "ace" into a pun generating website.

My greatest weakness is fast food. My greatest strength is n/a I'm weak as hell.

Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands

Day 80 - Airlie Beach

The overnight bus to Airlie beach was a long one – clocking in at 12 hours, with stops in Townsville, Mackay, Aye and Bowen. I rolled into the beach town mid afternoon, and crashed immediately upon arrival to my hostel. Fresh after a few hours of shut-eye, I finally set off to explore Airlie Beach. This relaxed resort town is on the coast of Queensland, and is the gateway to the nearby Whitsunday Islands. The town was fully decorated for Christmas in tropics style - which in most cases involved a Santa with a surfboard and boardshorts!

Christmas Down Under!

The main street of Airlie Beach was packed full of swim stores, patios, and dozens of tour desks. I grabbed fish and chips at Boatys and wandered along the shoreline to Abel Point Marina, the departure point for most of the sailboats into the Coral Sea. The scenery around me was spectacular, with hundreds of white sailboats bobbing on the brilliant turquoise waters of the bay. As the sun began to go down, I meandered back to my hostel, stopping to grab groceries for the next few days, and pick up some Vegemite to send home to Canada! (A favourite product of my family – what happens when you have an Australian grandmother!)

In the evening, I made friends with a few girls from Holland and Amsterdam at my hostel, and we ended up winning the hostel’s trivia night. Sitting on the outdoor patio enjoying our prize – a free bottle of champagne! – we chatted late into the evening, with gentle tropical breeze from the nearby ocean rustling the ceiling of palms above us.

Day 81-82 – Airlie Beach

I spent the following two days in Airlie Beach relaxing and enjoying this picturesque town, and planning for the next legs of my trip. In the mornings, I became a regular at Sidewalk Café, a beachside coffee house, where I took advantage of their strong Wifi and (equally strong!) coffee and do my research for Tasmania, Melbourne and Sydney. As it got progressively hotter and humid in the afternoons, I would head to the nearby manmade lagoon, located next to the ocean, for a refreshing dip. As it was still stinger season in Queensland, swimming in the ocean was not an option in Airlie beach without wearing a stinger suit.

The lagoon was a lovely place to spend an afternoon – between dips in the many pools, I would read my book, lie in the sun, do some yoga, and listen to music. My friend Rosa from Amsterdam would come and join me in the afternoons. It was a pretty lovely place to spend a few days!

Day 83 – Whitsunday Islands

With a small bag packed for my next two days of sailing, I headed to Abel Point Marina in the morning to board Freight Train, a former racing sailboat in the famous Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. An annual event that has taken place since 1945, this sailing race is considered to be among the most challenging yacht races in the world. The Freight Train won this race in 1983, and later retired from racing. The boat has since been retrofitted with stacked berths and a galley kitchen to take passengers out into the Whitsunday Islands.

As we set out on to the sparkling coral sea, our jovial and sarcastic Aussie skipper Kevin introduced us to the crew and gave us a briefing about the boat. We had a full sailing, complete with 3 crew and 18 passengers – who were mostly Germans, Americans, Spaniards and Austrians! The boat was not large, and the below deck area was designed for communal living, with small berths built into the side of the boat hull. This was not a problem in the least, as our group got along splendidly, relaxing above deck with our feet dangling off the side of the sailboat, and listening to music under the blue sky.

Kevin and his crew hoisted the sails as we approached open water, cutting the power to the motor. The wind whipped through our hair as we sailed towards the Whitsundays, occasionally seeing dolphins spashing in distance. The Whitsundays are a group of 74 magnificent Islands in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef, most of which are uninhabited and part of a national park. The shores of these islands are lined with sparking white beaches, and have impressive coral gardens hidden beneath the turquoise waters offshore.

Whitsunday Islands

We first anchored in a sheltered bay off Hook Island, and prepared for our snorkelling adventure in the fringing reef around the island, complete with gearing up in stinger suits! Large colourful reef fish circled our sailboat as we bobbed along the surface, occasionally diving down for a closer look at the reef. After such an immersive diving course less than a week ago, it was a bit of an adjustment to return to snorkelling – though the beauty of these coral gardens and unique fish was stunning at any depth.

After checking out a few other snorkel sites, each with coral gardens and marine wildlife just as stunning as the last, we finally arrived at our mooring for the night at a quiet cove off Border Island. After more swimming and diving off the boat, we finally brought the goon out of the cooler! “Goon” is what Aussies call cheap boxed wine, and it has a bit of a mixed reputation in the country. Although it is a backpacker staple, it is also known to be a notoriously bad wine – and often a recipe for a hangover! “Slap the Goon” is also a famous tradition of backpackers throughout Australia, a fact that did not take me long to learn! For a reason that remains unknown to me to this day, it is customary to slap the bag of goon before having a drink, a tradition that our sailing crew readily attempted - with much hilarity!

We ended the day with a delicious dinner prepared by our crew, which we ate on the boat deck, watching the sun go down over the Whitsunday Islands.

Day 84 – Whitsunday Islands and Whitehaven Beach

We woke up early in the morning to set sail to Whitehaven Beach, the iconic white sand beach that the Whitsunday Islands are best known for. Riding large ocean swells between Border Island and Tongue Bay, our skipper Kevin got us to help with hoisting sails, rigging and steering (a surprisingly effective way to keep us from getting seasick, as I had already felt a bit nauseous when walking below deck that morning!).

Tongue Bay, Whitsunday Islands

As we sailed towards our next anchorage point, a few pounding rainstorms quickly came and went, lasting for no more than 15 minutes before returning to clear blue sky. I personally found these brief downpours to be a welcome reprieve from the scorching heat of the Whitsundays – with the strong sun beating down on us and reflecting back off the water. The UV index in Queensland is very high, and it was easy to get sunburnt even if we were wearing sunscreen with over 50 SPF!

Dropping anchor at Tongue Bay, a picturesque cove off of Whitsunday Island, we shuttled over the mainland to begin our short hike up to Hill Inlet Lookout. As we walked, kookaburras cackled overhead, swooping to and from the hoop pines and cedar trees. Looking into the scrubby bush alongside the path, we were also lucky to catch a glimpse of a goana, a large lizard native to Queensland.

The Hill Inlet Lookout was simply spectacular, providing us with an excellent overlook of the swirling white sands below, streaked and mixed with the turquoise waters of the coral sea, which rise and fall with the tide. The pure white sand of Whitehaven Beach is made almost completely of silica, which has been brought to the beach by sea currents over millions of years. This silica sand is so fine that we were warned to be very careful with our cameras, as it is very easy for small particles to get into lenses and actually break them!

Whitehaven Beach

Descending from Hill Inlet Lookout to North Whitehaven beach, we walked towards the water, the fine white sand squeaking beneath our feet! In Hill Inlet, the waters are very shallow and protected by the tide and sandy beach. Because of the unique geography of this inlet, baby lemon sharks and baby stingrays can often be seen swimming through the shallow waters. Wading near the shore, a few swam within only a few meters of our feet!

After hanging out on the beach and swimming in Hill Inlet for a few hours, we returned to our sailboat for lunch, before gradually beginning the voyage back to Airlie Beach. The wind carried us to one final dive site on our return trip, where old cars were sunk offshore in 1965. Surprisingly, this was done intentionally to encourage coral growth and provide a habitat for reef fish. It was fascinating snorkelling in this beautiful coral garden, as you could still faintly make out the shapes of cars, buried deep under the coral. We spent the rest of our afternoon relaxing on the sailboat as we returned to port. Back on dry land, our group headed to Beaches bar in town, with free drinks courtesy of our hilarious skipper Kevin!

Day 85 - Airlie Beach to Brisbane

I finished my final morning in Airlie Beach with another visit to Sidewalk Cafe and the lagoon, before catching an airport shuttle to Proserpine airport, a tiny bush airport that only has 2 departures per day. I boarded a short flight to Brisbane, where I would be taking a connecting flight the following day to Hobart, Tasmania. I was looking forward to staying with the Mulcahys in Tasmania – long-time friends of my family, after my sister and their daughter Alice did a school exchange over 11 years earlier!

DARIUS

Darius is laughing as they step out into the sunshine. It’s a wonderfully mild day; his leather jacket isn’t too warm, but he would also probably be fine without it. It only elevates his mood, stepping out into such pleasant weather.

“It wasn’t that bad! I swear, the only person who I got in serious trouble was that desk clerk, and he should’ve been fired anyway, the way he was talking to you. I work in the service industry, I wouldn’t want someone like that talking to my patrons. We did them a favor. Picking fights in the middle of his shift. I doubt he would’ve even wanted to come back, the scare he had. Erik looks like a breeze could tip him over, and it probably could, but he’s strong when he’s mad. That’s like, probably the closest you can get to fighting a zombie in real life, and it’s probably a lot less fun than TV makes it seem. But anyway. I just told them that nobody was around to help when a patron got injured. That’s a big liability for them, they’ll probably calm down when they figure out that we’re not going to sue them or something,” he says, shrugging it off. “When you work in service, you know how to freak out people in service. It sucks to have to do it, but it’s just one of those things, you know?”

And it is that simple to him- he has been dealing with Erik’s messes for years, and covering some things is what comes with the territory. He doesn’t think about it anymore. And talking about Erik himself- it’s hard to differentiate talking to Christine and talking to Khan, or even to Erik. There is a certain joking language between them when they’re talking casually- especially between him and Erik- and it’s not as though he talks about Erik to anyone outside of that group. It seems normal to him, to be casual about the fact that Erik’s deformity exists and is frightening, however much Erik has worked to avoid talking about it with her.

The pace he sets is brisk- he’s eager to get to the metro, and his mind has already moved on to the day ahead. He glances at her often to be certain that she’s keeping up- Khan has complained before that he walks faster than most people jog when he has a place to be.

CHRISTINE

Christine gladly lets herself be swept forward on the tide of her friend’s laughter, her nerves soothed by the warm sun and Darius’ equally-bright tone. She’s only half listening as he cheerfully rattles off his criticisms of the hotel staff, content to keep pace at his side and offer the occasional nod or smile of her own in response; it’s clear that he doesn’t suspect anything about her conversation with the clerk, much less the contents of her purse. She cradles the purse close to her side as they walk, Mama’s warnings of pickpockets still ringing in her mind, but her feet nonetheless feel lighter as they work to match Darius’ spirited stride. She can find some other opportunity to discretely switch out the money; until then, she’ll just be careful.

They move quickly up the street, following the path she’s taken so many times already—in the direction of the restaurant and Erik’s house, and, beyond, the cafe where Darius had taken her last week; the metro station, as well: she recalls him pointing it out to her when they’d passed it on their way to lunch that day. With a rush of nervous excitement, she tries to remember how many coins she has in her wallet; from what she’d seen of the ticket machines at the airport, a €100 note won’t be of any more use to her on the metro than it would have been in the little shop back home.

Before she can come to any conclusion, she’s interrupted by the half of her brain that is still listening to Darius—jarred suddenly back to awareness by an utterly incongruous string of words.

For a moment, Christine simply isn’t sure that she’s *heard* him correctly; but, no, she *had*.

Then, she nearly laughs at the absurd specificity of the comparison he’s chosen to make.

True, being pinned against the wall of a dark alley by a tall and furious man in a mask would *have* to be a frightening experience, maybe even like facing some supernatural being—but what part of it would have *anything* in common with an encounter with a z—

Christine is grateful for the quick pace, keeping her a step or two behind Darius—that he doesn’t catch the sudden twist of understanding in her brow, or the queasy shock that briefly flares in her large, pale eyes.

For his part, Darius seems entirely at ease, continuing to ramble on as though he hadn’t said anything out of the ordinary. And…maybe he *hadn’t*; it’s a disconcerting concept to her, that someone could so flippantly make such a comparison—even more disconcerting than the thought that the comparison might be an *accurate* one.

As Darius turns back to check on her again, trailing a question and a commiserating smile, *she* has questions of her own.

Questions that she can’t *begin* to bring herself to ask.

“Haha, yeah,” she says with a nod, her eyes quickly snapping back to the path ahead of them. “Maybe I should remember that if I do end up having any more trouble: try putting myself in their shoes; being a hotel clerk can’t be that much different from being a cashier.”

DARIUS

“You’ll have plenty of practice dealing with other service people today,” Darius says cheerfully. “First things first, we have a goal- I was thinking we’d go to the Forum des Halles, I don’t think we need to go to luxury boutiques necessarily to get some basic clothes. It is fun to go in those crazy expensive places, though, and it’s close to the Louvre, a bit of a tourist area but a nice place to walk around. We can get lunch and everything.”

He checks the street, and gestures for Christine to cross with him; he half-jogs his way to the iron sign just a little bit down the cross-street, the entrance to the metro.

“I already have a pass sorted out, and you may as well get a carnet, ten rides, I’m sure you’ll use them. Not all today, but eventually.”

The air gets cooler as they descend into the station, which is dim compared to the sunlight outside, despite its rows of fluorescent lights. A row of ticket vending machines lines one wall, and on the other wall there is a kiosk with a bored-looking man flipping through a magazine inside. The man looks up as they enter, and nods at Darius in recognition.

“I come through here almost every day at some point, and this attendant always seems to be here,” he says. “I can help with French if you’d rather talk to a person than use a machine. A carnet is 14.50, so it’s cheaper than buying tickets individually.”

He is utterly unaware of Christine’s predicament with large bills- it just doesn’t register to him, though it does make sense, her being a traveler. It is not uncommon for tourists to show up with large bills, and splitting them is not typically easy, with the majority of smaller stores rejecting them. He carries small bills, himself- he’s used to life in the city, and it has slipped his mind, how difficult it was converting all of his money to the euro when they had moved.

CHRISTINE

“I, um—I trust your recommendation,” Christine says as she follows Darius across the street, smiling against the nervousness that bubbles at the top of her excitement. “You’re the expert!”

There’s no reason for her to worry about their shopping trip. Even…even if they *were* to end up at some expensive boutique, Erik *had* given her the money in large part with the intention that she should spend it on clothes: would it really be *bad*, to use it to buy something nice for herself? Perhaps just one nice new jacket, to replace the one that she sacrificed to wrap Erik’s wounded arm; there’s more she needs, shirts and jeans and definitely at least one pair of shoes—but if she can find *those* someplace cheap enough, it will all balance out. Maybe.

But what would Darius think, if he saw her buy something expensive?—if he sees the money *at all*, when she’s already told him that she doesn’t have any? Why should he take on the inconvenience of letting her work in his restaurant, hardly able to speak to any of the other employees, when she has hundreds of already-undeserved euro in her wallet?

Before she can face the issue of what might or might not happen at any of the shops, though, she first has to actually *get* there.

“Oh, um…” she says, glancing from Darius to the attendant and then back to the bank of ticket machines; a sign affixed to the nearest confirms her suspicion that they won’t accept large bills, “I think that…"

She knows she doesn’t have more than ten euro in coins, let alone €14.50. Her bank card has enough, but she’s tried her best to preserve it for emergencies. What is the alternative, though? Trying to get change from the man in the kiosk? If she asks Darius to translate, he’ll obviously find out about the money, but *refusing* his help might made him suspicious; either way, there’s no guarantee that the attendant would even be *able* to make change for her.

"It…would probably be better for you to show me how to use the machine; if I ever get stuck, I can probably talk to the attendant well enough to figure things out—but there won’t always be someone here to teach me how these things work,” she says, giving Darius a grateful smile as she gestures towards the row of machines.

As she swipes her card a minute or two later, Christine bites at the inside of her lip, refusing to let herself consider whether it might have been wiser to buy a few coins’ worth of single tickets.

DARIUS

Painfully unaware of Christine’s internal struggle, Darius agrees cheerfully and gives a wave to the desk attendant as he moves over to the machines. “It’s really pretty simple,” he says. “No Swedish language option, but the French is very basic- your French is getting better- here…”

He walks her through the steps of purchasing a pass, pointing to buttons but having her push them herself. He wants her to be able to do it on her own, after all, if she needs to. He digs his own pass out of his wallet, and shows her how to pass through the gate, inserting the ticket and taking it when it pops out on top, throwing in that it’s best to do it quickly- the metro is quiet at the moment, but when foot traffic is heavy, Parisians will get cranky stuck behind someone slow.

A train is pulling in just as they emerge into the tunnel, and Darius ushers her on, clearly pleased with their luck.

“No wait at all. It’s always nice when that happens,” he comments as the doors slide shut behind them. There are seats free, only a few people scattered around in the car, but he’d rather stand right now, and he wraps one hand around a pole, bracing himself for when the train starts.

He finds himself looking around at each passenger in the car with unusual scrutiny; one woman notices and averts her eyes, frowning. It doesn’t even occur to him what he’s looking at them for, until he remembers. He hasn’t ridden the metro since a few days ago, and the memory of Khan’s argument is fresh in his mind- it would be so unlikely to run into those people again, with the thousands that use the metro every day, but it’s still in the back of his mind to look for them.

And it doesn’t just have to be them. He knows that there are others in Paris who share similar sentiments, and he angles his eyes back at the ground at the thought. He should do everything in his power to blend in. He doesn’t want to cause trouble, especially with Christine- but the very thought that he could cause trouble by just being on the train ignites frustration in the back of his mind that he struggles to suppress. It isn’t fair, but he has to push down whatever feelings he has about it. It wouldn’t be right to put it all on Christine. Today is meant for her to see the city. It’s meant for them both to have a good time. He glances to the side and forces a crooked smile as the train jumps to a start.

“You’ll know the whole system well before long,” he says. “It becomes second nature. I got used to it fast enough. It wasn’t even that long ago. I’m sure you will, too.”

CHRISTINE

Back when they’d lived in Gothenburg, when she and Mama had often ridden the trams together, Christine would have counted herself lucky to see such an empty car; now, she ignores the open seats, her hand taking the space beneath Darius’ on the metal support pole. He is her guide here, her example of how to be a Parisian, and it’s in her best interest to follow his lead; the way she staggers at the sudden lurching motion of the train is a reminder of how far she has left to go.

She answers his encouragement with a dubious laugh, “Maybe!”, her elbow winding itself more firmly around the pole. “I lived in my old city for five years, and still had to check the map every time I wanted to go somewhere.” Moving to a smaller town hadn’t been *all* bad, in the end.

Outside, the dark tunnel walls flash past the windows, lit by the flicker of the occasional emergency light. An unpleasant shiver works up Christine’s back at the belated realisation that they’re underground; vaguely, she wonders how deep.

“And of course, with the tram, if you get on the wrong line, you can at least *see* where you’re going."

She has to catch herself again as the train unexpectedly—to *her*, at least—grinds to a halt, pausing to let on more passengers before continuing along the route to the Forum des Halles.

”*And* when you’re *stopping*,“ she adds, her warm laugh melting away the brief chill.

DARIUS

Darius smiles faintly at her as she staggers back and forth- there had certainly been a time when he’d done that on the metro, as well.

“You begin to learn when it’s going to stop,” he says. “Though you’re right, it would be nice to be above ground- it can be gloomy down here. It doesn’t have the same heat underground, though, that it did in my city. People think it gets hot in the summer around here- I swear, that’s one thing I’ll never get used to. The weather. It’s even colder in Sweden, isn’t it? The friend I write to, in Stockholm- he told me that it doesn’t really go above 20 that often. I mean, Tehran isn’t the desert that some people picture, but it gets much hotter than that.”

He’s quiet for a moment, bracing himself as the metro grinds to a halt again. He can feel people looking, curious about what language they’re speaking, but he doesn’t meet any of their eyes- just looks down at Christine as a couple passengers shuffle off, and a few more shuffle on.

“I felt really homesick here at first,” he admits. “Little things like the weather can do that. There are still days when I feel sad about it. And Khan- he never adjusted to being here at all. I guess- I know it’s intimidating. But if you ever need any help, we at least understand how difficult it can be, becoming a part of this city. It’s a confusing place, a lot of the time.”

He doesn’t mean to dampen the mood- it pushes back his own feelings of self-doubt to express his willingness, and ability, to help her. He glances at the map as the train begins moving again, and it seems that the next stop is theirs. They are already standing, and already close enough to the doors to exit quickly, so he only makes a mental note to get off once the doors open again.

CHRISTINE

How fortunate has she been, to have found friends who can offer her *understanding* as well as knowledge? Looking up into Darius’ warm brown eyes, she’s struck by the desire to thank him again—to jump once more into the losing battle against the frustrating inadequacies of letters and grammar, to try to find some *words* that might express her appreciation and gratitude; but if there’s one thing that her time in Paris has *already* taught Christine, it’s that words *aren’t* always necessary. She contents herself with replying to him silently—a nod of agreement, and a soft, commiserating smile.

She can’t say that the understanding is fully mutual, though: while she undoubtedly misses Mama, true *homesickness* has yet to strike. The feeling itself is one that is all too familiar to her—the way it causes the heart to ache with each beat, like the wings of a flagging bird unable to find its way back to its nest—but, thinking back on the small city that she came to Paris from, it’s hard to imagine *ever* feeling such longing for the place. She’d never wanted to live there in the first place; had worked *so hard* to get the chance to *leave*. If she’s ever had a *home* to miss, it wasn’t that little cluster of brick and concrete buildings.

A question, born of pure and guileless curiosity, slips free before Christine can think better of it:

“Why did you leave Tehran?”

Of course, no sooner have the words been spoken than her brain reminds her of a rather obvious answer.

“I mean—” she cuts in before he can respond, her voice tight in contrast to the softness with which she’d asked the question, “I know you both came here with Erik, but—”

But…?

Darius watches expectantly; she shifts her grip on the metal post, her gaze darting back to the flickering window again as she struggles to distill what it is that she actually wants to *know*.

“I…we were always moving around when I was little,” Christine says finally, her tone uncertain as she glances at her friend again, “For years, we never stayed in the same place. I’m used to it—to this; to being somewhere different. But you— Of course you wanted to help Erik—and it wasn’t all *good* there— But… How could—?” she shakes her head, tilting her face towards the window again to hide her ashamed blush, “I’m not making any sense, I’m sorry.”

DARIUS

It seems odd to speak about such a personal thing in public- if it were anyone else, he may have shied away from the topic, but despite the eyes on them, Darius knows that nobody in the car can understand what they’re saying. It gives him a sense of privacy and security, but still- he glances at the advertisements plastered on the walls for a moment, unable to trust that the stab of darkness he feels in his heart won’t show itself plainly on his face. He doesn’t think the question is inappropriate, but there is so much weight to it. More weight than he can possibly convey to her in a brief conversation on a train. For once, he measures his words before he speaks. There is so much history to go over to really explain. “It’s funny, really,” he says. “Living somewhere as active and brilliant as Tehran- and it felt like a ghost town half the time. We couldn’t stay there. Khan couldn’t stay there. I mean, losing my father was the worst thing that’s ever happened to me. But that’s how nature is- everyone says it, I guess, but it’s different for a parent to bury their child. It’s just not right. There were just too many old memories there. There was too much that couldn’t be left behind. We’d been talking about a new place meaning a new start before Khan ever met Erik. We weren’t thinking of France, but it made the most sense when he entered the picture.” Darius shrugs his jacket tighter around his shoulders and looks down at Christine. “I guess- a place being home doesn’t make it good for you to be there. And a place being good doesn’t make it home, either. But I’m sure you know that already, having moved your whole life.” He fades into silence, wrapping his hand around the pole to steady himself as he stares out the window and hopes that the answer is sufficient. It’s not everything, of course. He knows that the pain of losing a loved one isn’t anything new to her, and for that very reason, isn’t certain that he wants to stay on the topic too long. Honesty is important to him, though. If he wants her to open up to him, he is determined that he will do the same for her (perhaps too much, sometimes). He watches lights flicker by to keep his mind busy, away from the memory of all of the grief that pushed them away from their home country. The present is what’s important- it has to be.

CHRISTINE

Rather than assuaging her curiosity, Darius’ reply only stirs the dust from older questions, half-buried at the back of her mind; Christine only nods quietly, letting the conversation cede to the rumbling of the rails beneath their feet. Her father had always shied away when she’d asked about why he had taken them away from Skatelöv; she should have known better than to pose a similar question to someone else.

Yet, as the train gently sways around a curve in its track, there’s a part of her brain that persists in *wondering*.

As little attachment as she’d had to the various houses and towns and hotel rooms that she’d grown up in—as little as she could give any of them the title of ’home’—there’d always been a lingering comfort in the familiarity of those places: in knowing that the ones she’d loved had breathed that air; walked those floors; shared that same space with her, however fleetingly. To her, *leaving* those things has always seemed like just one more loss—an ever-present aftershock to tragedy, the ground crumbling away beneath her when she’d already fallen to her knees.

She can’t wrap her mind around what it would be like to be torn from a real *home*—much less to *choose* to leave such a place.

Even as she has done her best to push certain memories from her mind, her heart has fought to cling to the traces of *before*—as if, could she only hold onto enough pieces, she could pretend that nothing had changed.

But the decision had never been in her hands, and staying was never an option.

“I’m…glad you’re here now, anyway,” she says awkwardly after a few moments, her eyes darting only briefly upward, “And that you’re happy here.” Just then, the squealing of brakes slices through the muffled roar of the train, and Christine gratefully turns her attention towards remaining on her feet.
