On January 7th 1661, six ‘grave makers’ were paid £18 Scots for ‘raising’ the "mangled torso" of James Graham, Marquess of Montrose.
The Great Montrose, as he was known by his supporters, was renowned for his tactical genius on the battlefield during the civil wars that cost King Charles I both crown and head. Although Montrose would die as a royalist he first entered the lists in the 1630s’ as part of the Covenanters who were resisting Charles I attempts to impose a religious governance on Scotland, which according to legend was kicked of by Edinburgh’s Jenny Geddes in St Giles Cathedral.
Montrose as Covenanter was a moderate and afetr the Bishops War he became a leading exponent of the pro-reconciliation faction, bitterly opposed by the chief of the Campbell clan, who Graham distrusted, and rightly so.
The two became the opposing poles for the ensuing civil war in Scotland, at once a local clan war that would end up involving Ireland and England. Although Montrose, now King Charles’s lieutenant-general in Scotland, could hold his own on the battle fields he cherry picked skilfully using the hills and Glens to his advantage, as other great generals, Wallace and Bruce had centuries before.
Grahams luck came to an end when he was betrayed, taken to Edinburgh and exxecuted for treason in May 1650, while his limbs were distributed for exhibition in Glasgow, Stirling, Perth and Aberdeen. A family member arranged for Montrose’s heart to be removed surreptitiously from his torso after its burial and to be sent – after embalming – to his son in the Netherlands
After the restoration of Charles II in 1660 prompted the king to turn the tables on the Covenanters. In an upsurge of Royalist popular sentiment, Montrose was rehabilitated in a public ceremony in which his mangled corpse was disinterred and reunited with his head, heart and limbs, all of which were recalled from their various locations. In 1661, he was given a splendid funeral and reburied in St. Giles’ Cathedral, where his tomb can be viewed today, and more often than not, you will see a floral tribute to the man, such is the regard he is still held in.

Meet the sisters who purchased Woodland Plantation
Twins Jo and Joy Banners purchased the home where their ancestors were enslaved, which was also the location of Ameria’s largest slave revolt.
youtube
Growing up in Louisiana, in the bayous of the Mississippi River, identical twins Jocynita "Jo" Banner and Joyceia "Joy" Banner always heard stories from their grandmother Grace, who would tell them about their enslaved ancestors and their history of fighting back at the very plantation the two women now own.
"I know that she is really proud," Jo Banner said, referring to her grandmother. "She just served as this vessel to connect us to an energy that is informing and providing us the sustenance of what we need now for this fight."
The Banner twins are the founders of The Descendants Project, a nonprofit that fights for historic and cultural preservation for descendants of enslaved people. It was through their nonprofit that they bought Woodland Plantation, the birthplace of the 1811 slave revolt.
Raised on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, the twins were steeped in the tales of their grandmother, who recounted the harrowing events of the 1811 revolt known as the 1811 German Coast Uprising.
Often overshadowed in historical narratives, the rebellion saw the brave resistance of Charles Deslondes, two other leaders known as Kook and Quamana, along with approximately 25 others who sought freedom amidst the brutal oppression of slavery. They attacked on Epiphany Sunday. After injuring Manuel Andry and killing his son Gilbert, they armed themselves with more weapons and military uniforms.
The revolters walked through plantations on the east bank of the Mississippi River, along the River Road, and down the German Coast—through what is now St. John the Baptist, St. Charles, and Jefferson parishes— in an attempt to conquer the city of New Orleans, gathering as many as 500 more freedom seekers along the way. It became America’s largest “slave revolt”. By the end of the January 1811 rebellion, the white planters had brutally beheaded more than 100 enslaved men, put the rebels’ heads on spikes, and displayed them for 40 miles along River Road, from the center of New Orleans deep into plantation country. (Watch this video from CrashCourse with host Clint Smith III)
According to Britannica, “Even though the government and whites tried to minimize the uprising, surviving rebels and others passed down the stories, and Deslondes, Kook, and Quamana became legends among the enslaved people and their descendants.
Some 213 years later, Jo and Joy Banner became the newest owners -- and first Black owners -- of the historic Woodland Plantation site. It's the second plantation they've bought through the Descendants Project, the first being the Many Waters Plantation in Wallace, Louisiana.
The sisters said they purchase these lands to preserve their history -- they call it defensive buying. But they're also fighting for the freedom and protection of the historic homelands of their enslaved ancestors from industrial companies they claim are polluting the area, compromising the health of the land and the local population, a predominantly Black community.
"In addition to preserving that culture and aiming to get more recognition for that culture, we also do our best to protect the descendant communities, which are our descendant communities who are also fighting against a lot of environmental injustice, a lot of environmental racism," Jo Banner said.
Woodland Plantation is located on an 85-mile stretch of land along the Mississippi known as "Cancer Alley." Running from north of Baton Rouge to south of New Orleans, the area is surrounded by almost 200 industrial facilities releasing emissions linked to cancer in the region. Woodland itself is located in the most concentrated stretch, known as the "chemical corridor." Residents in this area have a 95% higher risk of cancer due to air pollution compared to the rest of the country, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
The EPA announced last month that it was calling for the plants in this area to reduce toxic emissions linked to cancer.
In January, the international non-governmental organization Human Rights Watch singled out the state of Louisiana and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, saying they had failed for decades to protect locals from industrial pollution and uphold federal safety standards, making the region the largest concentration of fossil fuel and petrochemical facilities in the western hemisphere.
About 20 minutes away from Woodland in Wallace, situated in St. John the Baptist Parish — and still in Cancer Alley — the Banner twins are also in a legal battle to stop a grain export facility from being built near their home and the Descendants Project headquarters. Read the full article here.

🎵 *Cue John Legend’s “All Of Me”*🎵
It was a beautiful ceremony, I’ll give her that.
The bride’s name is Sophia Wallace, or rather Sophia Lovett as of 30 minutes ago. She’s my step-cousin, niece of the darling step-mother. There’s a lot of history there. I’ll fill you in later. The groom … well you met Charlie already.
While the newlyweds finish their first dance, I’ll get you introduced.
Tumblr media
Here’s Suzanne Wallace, Sophia’s older sister. Not much to say about her. The two of them moved in with my step mom and I after my father passed away last year. No one knows the full story as to why they’re here, but the theory is to mooch off the fortune my father left behind.
Suzanne was actually supposed to get married a couple years back but the fiance left her for Suzie’s yoga instructor. The real stinger with that story is that Suzanne’s fiance only ever met the yoga instructor because she forced him to join a few classes before the wedding. Since he left, Suzanne has sworn off commitment. She dates around and sees a few guys now and again but she tries to cycle through before any emotions creep up. Drives my step-mom mad.
Tumblr media
“SELENA!” speak of the devil. “You said you ended this charade.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You look like a mess. Are you the reason the ceremony started 15 minutes late? Were you with Charles?”
well shit.

Hello, witches! Since I’m always harping on about learning your history and checking your sources, I thought I’d help folks get a head start by compiling some source material.
To that end, I’ve started a Dropbox folder with a stash of historical texts on witchcraft, magic, and related topics. Nearly everything I’ve managed to find so far is public domain (thank you Project Gutenberg), with the exception of a very thorough herbal grimoire I found online some years ago and a book of witchcraft from the 1970s that appears to be out of print.
I will be continuing in this vein with future texts that I find. Everything will be public domain or cited to the source that it came from, in PDF format. I will NOT be including PDFs of any book currently in circulation with a copyright linked to a living author or estate. The point of this folder is that everything in it should be free for sharing and open use as research materials.
Below is the initial list of titles. I tried to include as many as I could find, with a focus on some oft-cited classics. I will be adding new texts as I find them.
A Collection of Rare and Curious Tracts on Witchcraft and the Second Sight, by David Webster (1820)
A History of Witchcraft in England from 1558 to 1718, by Wallace Notestein (1909)
British Goblins, Welsh Folk-lore, Fairy Mythology, Legends and Traditions, by Wirt Sikes (1880)
Curiosities of Superstition, by W. H. Davenport Adams (1882)
Daemonologie, by King James I/VI (1597)
Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry, Edited and Selected by W. B. Yeats (1888)
Irish Witchcraft and Demonology, by St. John Drelincourt Seymour (1913)
La Sorcière, or The Witch of the Middle Ages, by Jules Michelet (1863)
Lives of the Necromancers, by William Godwin (1834)
Magic and Fetishism, by Alfred C. Haddon (1906)
Magic and Witchcraft, by Anonymous (1852)
Modern Magic, by M. Schele de Vere (1873)
Plant Lore, Legends, and Lyrics, by Richard Folkard (1884)
Practical Psychomancy and Crystal Gazing, by William Walker Atkinson (1908)
The Devil in Britain and America, by John Ashton (1896)
The Discoverie of Witchcraft, by Reginald Scot (1594, 1886 reprint)
The Extremely Large Herbal Grimoire (date unknown, internet publication)
The Golden Bough : A Study of Magic and Religion, by Sir James George Frazer (1890)
The Illustrated Key to the Tarot, by L.W. de Laurence (1918)
The Magic of the Horse-shoe, by Robert Means Lawrence (1898)
The Mysteries of All Nations, by James Grant (1880)
The Mystery and Romance of Alchemy and Pharmacy, by Charles John Samuel Thompson (1897)
The Superstitions of Witchcraft, by Howard Williams (1865)
The Witchcraft Delusion in Colonial Connecticut by John M. Taylor (1908)
The Wonders of the Invisible World, by Cotton Mather and A Farther Account of the Tryals of the New-England Witches, by Increase Mather (1693, 1862 reprint)
Witch Stories, by E. Lynn (Elizabeth Lynn) Linton (1861)
Witch, Warlock, And Magician, by W. H. Davenport Adams (1889)
Witchcraft & Second Sight in the Highlands & Islands of Scotland, by John Gregorson Campbell (1902)
Witches' Potions & Spells, ed. by Kathryn Paulsen (1971)
Disclaimer: Please keep in mind that these texts are (with few exceptions) more than a century old, and may contain depictions, references, or language that are outdated and inappropriate. The point of including these documents is to provide access to historical texts for research and reference. Inclusion in the collection does not equal unconditional agreement with or wholesale approval of the contents.
Take everything with a grain of salt and remember to do your due diligence!
Happy Witching!   -Bree

Some things I want desperately to exist in the world, in no particular order
Tales from the Loop season 2
Stranger Things season 4
A musical adaptation of This is How You Lose the Time War
A TV show based on Radical Face’s Family Tree albums
Urban fantasy TV show based on the works of Charles de Lint
A super hard-driving cover of Joshua Radin’s “Someone Else’s Life,” but with, like, actual build and musical dynamics
In the fanfic department:
So much more M-rated Zachary/Dorian (The Starless Sea)
Same for Sabriel/Touchstone (Sabriel/The Old Kingdom)
Charles Wallace Murry as an adult (honestly how long until Wrinkle in Time enters the public domain and someone can just write this book?)
Arthurian legend college AU
X-Files: Kurt Crawford. Duane Barry backstory. Kersh POV (especially around the times of “Tithonus” and “The Truth”). Arthur Dales. Skinner/Frohike friendship. Samantha’s journal between her return and her death.

Michael Leavy’s Stream is a nostalgic love letter to slasher horror that blends old-school scares with a modern edge. With a powerhouse ensemble of horror icons, including Danielle Harris, Tony Todd, Jeffrey Combs, and David Howard Thornton, the film promises gore, tension, and inventive kills—elements that should delight fans of the genre. Yet, despite its high ambitions and genre pedigree, Stream doesn’t quite escape the pitfalls of disjointed storytelling and overstuffed ideas, making it more of a mixed bag than a horror classic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fE2xsAN43bI Premise: The film’s premise is immediately captivating, setting the stage at a remote hotel where the Keenan family, already fraying at the edges due to their daughter's rebellious behavior, finds themselves trapped in a nightmare orchestrated by a group of masked killers. The live-streaming element, where the murders are broadcast to eager viewers bidding on the players, injects a fresh take on the familiar slasher formula, echoing the voyeuristic horror of films like Hostel and The Purge. The concept of a killer game being streamed for profit resonates with the modern era, tapping into fears about technology’s dark side. However, this is where the movie’s cracks start to show. While the setup is effective, Stream stumbles with its pacing. The film tries to juggle multiple plot threads simultaneously, introducing various masked killers (dubbed "players") with differing personalities and methods, while also exploring the dynamics of the Keenan family, retired officer Dave Burnham, and hotel manager Mr. Lockwood (Jeffrey Combs). The sheer number of characters and subplots often detracts from the film’s focus, leading to a fragmented narrative that can feel overwhelming and hard to follow. Performances: One of Stream's most significant strengths is its cast of horror legends. Jeffrey Combs as Mr. Lockwood delivers a wonderfully sinister performance, embodying a character that’s equal parts creepy and calculating. He brings gravitas to every scene he’s in, giving the film a much-needed anchor amidst the chaos. Charles Edwin Powell’s portrayal of Roy Keenan, the desperate father trying to protect his family, is grounded and relatable, providing a touch of humanity in a film full of carnage. Tim Reid as Dave Burnham, a retired police officer with a murky past, adds an air of mystery and unpredictability. The supporting cast of killers, especially David Howard Thornton (best known for his role as Art the Clown in Terrifier), provides an eclectic mix of terror. Thornton’s physicality and menacing presence are a standout, contributing to some of the film’s more brutal and creative kills. Underused actors: Unfortunately, despite these strong performances, not all the characters are given enough room to breathe. Dee Wallace’s Linda Spring and Danielle Harris’s role feel underutilized, with their potential for more significant contributions to the narrative left untapped. The Keenan family dynamic, while emotionally charged, gets sidelined by the film’s insistence on showcasing the gore and spectacle of the live-streamed murders. Bloody carnage galore: For fans of practical effects and gnarly kills, Stream doesn’t disappoint. The film revels in its slasher roots, with an array of gruesome deaths that are sure to make even the most seasoned horror aficionados squirm. Michael Leavy’s direction shines in the film’s set pieces, with tension building around every corner as the masked killers hunt their prey in increasingly inventive and violent ways. From power drills to hatchets, the kills are creative, bloody, and brutal, reminiscent of 80s slasher fare but with a modern polish. The film’s use of masks, each player having a distinct persona, adds a layer of intrigue to the proceedings. The enigmatic Player One, the sibling duo Player Two and Player Three, and the hulking Player Four all bring their own styles of mayhem, each with their unique visual identity. While this variety adds flavor to the violence, it also muddies the waters when it comes to coherence, as the film struggles to keep all these moving parts organized. Claustrophia and color: Leavy and his team excel in creating a sense of claustrophobia and dread within the confines of the hotel. The setting, reminiscent of classic horror locales like the Overlook Hotel from The Shining, works well as an isolated battleground for the Keenan family’s survival. The dimly lit hallways, strategically placed cameras, and the looming presence of the masked killers contribute to the overall atmosphere of unease. The film’s color palette and use of shadows further evoke a retro feel, grounding it in the aesthetic of 70s and 80s horror. Where Stream falters, however, is in its reliance on the “live-stream” gimmick. While the idea of killers being auctioned to the highest bidder and broadcast to an audience is clever, the execution feels underdeveloped. The film doesn’t fully explore the implications of this voyeuristic setup, and the focus on the bidding war element feels more like a distraction than a central theme. A more in-depth exploration of the audience’s role and their sadistic desires could have added thematic weight to the film. Overall: Stream delivers on its promise of a bloody good time, with enough gore, tension, and memorable performances to satisfy die-hard slasher fans. Its blend of retro and modern horror elements, coupled with its talented cast, makes it a fun ride through the bloody corridors of the hotel. However, its lack of narrative focus, underdeveloped subplots, and a barrage of characters and ideas prevent it from reaching the heights of the slasher greats it draws inspiration from. For those seeking a nostalgic, gore-filled throwback with some inventive twists, Stream will hit the right notes. But for those craving a tighter, more coherent story with emotional depth, it may feel more like a missed opportunity. Still, Michael Leavy’s film is a testament to the enduring appeal of the slasher genre, even if it doesn’t fully escape the traps it sets for itself.

The Valancourt Book of Victorian Christmas Ghost Stories: Volume Four, edited by Christopher Philippo, Valancourt Books, 2020. Info: valancourtbooks.com.
A Valancourt Yuletide tradition returns, this time with rare 19th-century tales from U.S. newspapers and magazines. The Christmas ghost story tradition is usually associated with Charles Dickens and Victorian England, but-apparently unknown to historians and scholars-Christmas ghost stories were extremely widespread and popular in 19th-century America as well, frequently appearing in newspapers and magazines during the holiday season. From legends of old New Orleans and strange happenings on the plains of Iowa and the Dakota Territory to weird doings in early Puerto Rico and ghostly events in Gold Rush-era San Francisco, the tales collected here reveal a forgotten Christmas ghost story tradition in a bygone America that is both familiar and oddly foreign. This collection features eighteen stories and nine poems, including entries by women and African American writers, plus extra bonus material and an introduction by Christopher Philippo. “He turned and beheld a low black figure, with a body no higher than his knees, with a prodigious head, in the brow of which was set a single eye of green flame like a shining emerald, and with hands and arms of supernatural length.” — J. H. Ingraham, “The Green Huntsman; or, The Haunted Villa” “The latch lifted, the door swung open-and then-my God! what a spectacle! Through the open door there stepped a figure, not of Mrs. Hayden, not of her corpse, not of death, but a thousand times more horrible, a thing of corruption, decay, of worms and rottenness.” — Anonymous, “Worse than a Ghost Story”
