I... I want to revamp my sword posts, but I feel woefully inadequate. I was halfway through rewriting the educational Teppi adventures to make them clearer and address the actually steps of smithing a sword, but... but I am unworthy, I am too awed by the material.
But holy Oyakata-sama, I am a bit of a tatara otaku and I want to transmit my knowledge and fascination so bad.
Suffice to say for the moment that tatara, the traditional method of smelting iron in Japan--and the only method which can produce the steel used in Japanese swords--is defined by it's use of iron sand and charcoal.
The scale of how much of both is required is humbling. This, children, is how sword babies are made.
Which is to say, the Swordsmith Village would have been full of people who know charcoal well--what types of wood to use, how thoroughly to burn it for smelting versus for use in smithing, how to care for a forest so that you can raise it as a slowly renewable resource... that's to say nothing of control of the fires, which they'd be just as attuned to as Tanjiro is.
I want to imagine that at least in that aspect, Tanjiro talks shop with them, and someday brings them gift charcoal.
Things making me sad this morning:
1. People don’t know, love, and appreciate Japanese swords enough. Yes, they are cool, but can you even fathom the extent of why? Have you even tried?
2. That we didn't see Nezuko go berserk at least one more time
3. How closely related the production of charcoal is to the production of swords. You cannot have Nichirin-to without sunlight, yes, but you also can't have them without lots and lots of charcoal. As fellow fireworkers, Tanjiro would be able to relate to the swordsmiths at a core level. They would of course appreciate him for this, too. It is beautiful and not appreciated enough.
4. Poor Giyuu thinking Tanjiro is dead and the very next instant having to try to chop his head, yikes--
5. It can be so hard to transmit love and appreciation for swords. So much of it is still mysterious to me. WHY DO I NOT KNOW AS MUCH AS AN EXPERT WOULD, WHY
6. Charcoal as well is so underappreciated and I likewise cannot fully grasp it, aaaaaahhhhhh
