Every Single Issue I Have With S*lki (Itâs Not Just The Selfcest)
Here goes. I threatened to post this a few days ago and never did, but I just saw a s*lki stan Twitter account claim that Loki caring about Sylvie more than the whole multiverse was a Good And Romantic thing and it pushed me over the fucking edge, so now you all have to read this. Iâve divided it into categories cause thereâs just THAT much.
OOC Bullshit
⢠First and foremost, no amount of mental gymnastics you do will ever make me believe that this specific Loki- the one that just invaded New York, that just came off a year of Thanos Torture, that just got done being influenced by the sceptre, that was literally in the middle of a crisis already, and then on top of that went through all the trauma of Ep 1- would even be worried about a romantic relationship. That would be the furthest thing from his mind. Go back and watch how he acted in Avengers- you think that guy would abandon his previous mission to become a snivelling simp for a girl heâd just met 3 days prior? Yeah, thereâs no universe in which that makes sense.
⢠âItâs very in character for Loki to fall in love with himself lololol-â NO, itâs literally not. Out of all the characters in the mcu, I donât think I can think of anyone that genuinely hates themselves more than Loki. He even referred to all his other male variants as âmonstersâ and said meeting them was âa nightmareâ in this series. Heâs got so much self-loathing, plus the fact that he genuinely thinks himself to be an evil backstabbing scourge- so thereâs no evidence at all suggesting that he would ever develop a fondness for, or even be inclined to trust, another version of himself, after only knowing them for 3 days.
⢠Building on that, the whole concept of Loki falling in love with a version of himself just feeds into the annoying ass misconception that heâs a narcissist. No matter which way you stack it, heâs not. If youâre referring to NPD, he doesnât fit the criteria, and if youâre saying ânarcissistâ just as a slang term meaning âselfish and arrogantâ, that still doesnât accurately describe him. But when creators like Waldron and Herron do things like having him fall in love with himself, it makes it so much easier for casual viewers to think that he is.
Shitty LGBT Rep
⢠Itâs kinda sus that Lokiâs are allegedly genderfluid and yet the only female-presenting variant we see (and apparently the only female-presenting variant there is, cause the male Lokiâs all seemed unfamiliar with the concept) is treated as some kind of mind-bogglingly special paradox. Also very sus that, out of all the Loki variants, the one our Loki falls in love with just so happens to be the only female one. What a coincidence.
⢠The fact that the creators of the show went around bragging about Lokiâs bisexuality and Marvel purposefully (lbr) allowed stories about Loki possibly having a male love interest to circulate, specifically enticing queer viewers to watch the show (you know, the definition of queerbaiting), and then instead of having a male love interest (Loki was the first queer main character, so it was the perfect opportunity) they gave us *gestures to this dumpster fire* this⌠itâs just a middle finger to LGBT fans. The fact that they would rather have this relationship with all its myriad of problems than have a gay relationship is justâŚâŚ. Very telling.
⢠While him being with a woman obviously doesnât refute his bisexuality, the fact that they showed/talked about him being interested in 3 different women (flight attendant, Sylvie, Sif) and never even hinted at him being attracted to a man, definitely makes it seem like they were trying to cover up his bisexuality to smooth things over with the more homophobic viewers. You know? Itâs like âI know youâre pissed that we sorta confirmed Loki as bi, so we promise weâll never mention it again! Or even hint at it! As a matter of fact, weâll give him lots of female lovies and make him seem as straight as possible! Thatâll take your mind off of that horrible crumb of queer rep, right? Please please please keep giving us your money!!!â
⢠Aside from all the other issues, at its core, the biggest reason why I think Iâm so irritated with s*lki is that it took one of the most interesting, complex, and diverse characters in cinema atm and squished him into a tired ass unnecessary heteronormative subplotâŚ. Like literally every. single. other. protagonist. ever. Loki is such a unique character, and itâs so so so incredibly disappointing that they stuck him into that same boring cookie cutter romance that happens to every other character in every other movie Iâve ever seen. Itâs a disservice, and itâs honestly just not compelling or entertaining at all.
Thematic Issues Galore
⢠His arc didnât need a romance. With anyone. It was unnecessary and it didnât make sense plot-wise. In fact, one of the reasons he was my fav prior to this was because he was the only big-name mcu character whose story wasnât muddied-up by a romance that didnât need to be there. So much for that.
⢠He wasnât emotionally ready for a romantic relationship with anyone. Hell, just a genuine friendship wouldâve been pushing it for him at this point. He was in such a bad state that any relationship he got into wouldâve been toxic and unhealthy for both him and the other person, and it doesnât make sense why the writers would want to put him in one when there were so many cons and essentially no pros (other than âUwu arenât they cute togetherâ).
⢠Sylvieâs character in general was unnecessary and Lokiâs character was robbed just by her being there. The whole show became about her post-Ep 2. They spent most of the time giving her backstory, building her up, telling us how awesome she is, trying to convince us to like her, etc when what they really needed to be doing was building Loki up- cause I gotta say, if I had to describe TVA!Loki in a few words, they would be Flat, Boring, and Weak.
⢠The romance overtakes the plot. They spend time portraying their supposed connection that couldâve been spent adding depth and complexity to literally any of the characters. They make the big Nexus Event them giving each other googly eyes on Lamentis when it couldâve been so many other way more profound things that speak to the fundamental nature of Lokiâs. They have the climax of the finale be âoh no she betrayed him to kill He Who Remainsâ when it couldâve been something way more compelling (Loki having a moral crisis over whether or not to kill HWR, Loki contemplating the state of the multiverse and weighing the pros and cons of freedom vs order, Loki looking into some What If situations and getting emotional about what couldâve been regarding his family, Loki realising the gravity of HWRâs offer and finally coming to terms with how important he is to the universal cycle, etc etc). The entire plot suffered in favour of a romance that half of us didnât even want.
⢠It essentially reduced all of Lokiâs potential character growth down to âHe did it for his crush.â He seemed to at least have some motivations of his own in Ep 1-2 (feeble as they were) but after Sylvie showed up in Ep 3, literally every action he took was just him being a simp for her. Why did he lie in the interrogation? To try to protect Sylvie. Why did he fight the minutemen and Timekeepers? To survive kinda, but mostly cause it was important to Sylvie. Why did he get pruned? Cause he got distracted trying to confess his crush to Sylvie. Why did he try to get out of The Void? Cause he thought Sylvie needed him. Why did he stay in The Void? Cause Sylvie was staying. Why did he try to enchant Alioth? Cause Sylvie told him to. Why did the multiverse get cracked open, leading to an infinite number of Kangs waging war on all of existence? Cause Loki didnât wanna hurt Sylvie in their fight at the Citadel and then get distracted by her kissing him. Itâs uninteresting and honestly pretty embarrassing.
⢠Throughout their ârelationship arcâ the writers do their absolute damndest to convince us that we should like Sylvie more than Loki. And you know what? Itâs the most hypocritical shit Iâve ever seen. They preach and preach about how Sylvieâs life has been so difficult/we should feel bad for her/she had it so bad/poor poor sylvie/she had it SO much worse than pampered prince LokiâŚ. But then they never even touch on any of Lokiâs trauma of hardships (the ones that have been ignored for literally 3 movies now). They frame Sylvie as a good person and a Freedom Fighter after she spent literal decades/centuries mass-murdering brainwashed TVA agents and showing exactly zero remorse for itâŚ.. but then they make it their mission to constantly remind us that Loki is a terrible person and constantly put him in situations where heâs forced to acknowledge his wrongdoings/show remorse/admit to how âevilâ he is for being a mass murderer for like 2 years. They show him on-screen having a wider range of powers than her, and perpetuate his whole shtick of being a âmaster manipulatorâ or whateverâŚ.. But then they make Sylvie âthe brawnâ more competent, intelligent, and physically capable than him. Tell me how itâs a good thing for a ship to be so narratively biased toward one character.
Missed Opportunities
⢠If they absolutely had to have a romance subplot, then they couldâve paired Loki with one of the characters that have already been established OR one of the characters that were a big part of the whole TVA storyline anyway. It wouldâve been so interesting if theyâd revealed that Loki had a history with some of the players from previous films (Sif and Fandral both come to mind). It also wouldâve been really interesting if theyâd given Loki a love interest that actually had some allegiance to the TVA as a whole (Mobius maybe, but not necessarily. It also couldâve been Renslayer or B-15). Hell, imo it wouldâve been cool if theyâd followed through with that âSee you again somedayâ line that he said to the flight attendant in Ep 1. ALL of these characters have way more chemistry with him than Sylvie, and they were also already relevant to the plot without wasting half the show to give background info on them.
⢠If they absolutely had to have a hetero-presenting love story involving an enchantress-type figure, then thereâs a whole Enchantress (Amora) that was actually Lokiâs love interest in the comics. Plus, fans have been screaming for Amora to appear in the mcu for years. Plus, Tom literally pitched an Amora/Loki storyline way back in 2012-13. Also, Lorelei (another enchantress) is also one of Lokiâs love interests in the comics, and she already exists in the mcu (she was on Agents of SHIELD). There were several different established characters for them to choose from. Creating a whole knew amalgamation of a character and going with the âsheâs a Loki variantâ storyline was just completely unnecessary and made no sense.
⢠They completely robbed us of a Chaos Twins dynamic. Had they handled Sylvie better and not forced her and Loki to smooch, the two of them couldâve had a really really complex and interesting sibling relationship. Loki couldâve stepped into Thorâs shoes and sort of used that new role to gain some self importance, and Sylvie couldâve finally had somebody to look out for her/teach her magic/be there for her. It wouldâve been very aesthetically pleasing, the vibes wouldâve been out of this world, it wouldâve been way more profound than this bs, and frankly it wouldâve been much more entertaining to watch.
⢠Lokiâs relationship (read: obsession) with Sylvie completely overshadows all Lokiâs other relationships in the show. Loki and Mobius were literally the focal point of the series in Ep 1-2, but after Sylvie showed up in Ep 3, they barely had any interactions with each other, and Mobius pretty much faded to the background entirely. Loki had the beginnings of a pretty interesting antagonistic relationship with Renslayer (with her wanting him pruned, then arguing with Mobius that he couldnât be trusted), but after Sylvie showed up the dynamic shifted to focus on the history between her and Ravonna. Loki and B-15 started off very badly and openly disliked each other throughout Ep 1-2, and then in the end of Ep 2, Loki showed a little bit of concern for her when she was possessed, hinting that they might be inching toward a reconciliation- especially considering how obvious it was that Loki was gonna uncover the TVAâs sins eventually. There was so much potential for him to be the one to give her her memories back and convince her to change sides, but no, of course that honor went to Sylvie. In fact, after Sylvie showed up, Loki and B-15 never even spoke to each other again.
Various S*lki Fails
⢠If they were trying to convince us that this affection was mutual, they completely failed. Thereâs nothing Iâve seen that even hints at Sylvie feeling the same way about Loki that he does about her. At most, Iâd say she has a slight endearment to him. She finds him likeable and sheâs grudgingly fond of him, but she definitely isnât in love with the guy. Maybe she thinks heâs cute and hopes that he gets out of this mess alright, but her mission obviously comes before him- whereas, itâs been confirmed multiple times that Loki cares about her above anything else. She doesnât trust him, she looks at him like heâs an incompetent fool half the time, she shows little to no reaction during most of his confession moments, and she kissed him as a means to distract him so that she could get him out of her way. Look, all Iâm saying is, when you get into a relationship where one of you is way more invested than the other, it never ends well.
⢠This goes without saying for a lot of us, but the selfcest is just straight up odd and cringey. If youâre cool with that sort of thing, fine! People can ship what they want! But donât pretend itâs not at least a little bit uncomfortable. Yes, I know theyâre not technically siblings so itâs not technically incest, and theyâre also not technically the exact same person, but theyâre similar enough that it makes things weird. And yes I know selfcest canât happen in real life, so thereâs no way to judge it morally, but neither can most of the other stuff that happens in these shows/movies (the Snap, Loki destroying jotunheim, superhero with powers being held accountable, mind control) and yet we still find ways to judge their morality, because they all mirror real-world events. (The snap= genocide; Loki destroying Jotunheim= bombing other countries; superhero accountability= weapons accountability; mind control= grooming and coercion). And lbr the closest real-world mirror to two versions of the same person (who may or may not share DNA, family, backgrounds, physical and emotion characteristics) being romantically involved with one another is incest. And you can be ok with that if you want- thatâs your prerogative- but donât get pissy just cause a lot of us are squicked out by it.
⢠The whole mirror metaphor (learning self love via each other) thing just fell completely flat. First of all, having Loki learn to love himself by looking at someone who mirrors him did not, in any way shape or form, require them to be romantically involved. But they were. Of course. Secondly, the creators have contradicted themselves so many times on whether Loki and Sylvie are the same or not, that it doesnât even really register to the viewer that the mirroring thing was what they were going for. Finally, Loki and Sylvie are shown to have so little in common- and to have only the most bare minimum of similarities personality-wise- that it doesnât even make sense that Loki would âlearn to love himself through loving herâ. Like? Theyâre nothing alike. So how would he make the connection that he himself is actually pretty cool, based on her alone? Thereâs virtually nothing in her that reflects him.
⢠I know the objective of the entire show was to convince us of how awesome and unique Sylvie is, but honestly her relationship with Loki just did the opposite. A hallmark of a Mary Sue is having her constantly upstage the male lead, and then having him instantly fall madly in love with her anyway. And thatâs.. exactly what happened here. Everything theyâre doing to try to force her character to be more stan-able is really just forcing her to look more like their self-insert OC. Which is exactly what she is. It wouldâve been so much more satisfying if she didnât have to try so hard to look cool, if they didnât have to try so hard to make her backstory tear-inducing, if they didnât have to turn our protagonist into a snivelling simp just to prove how incredible she supposedly is. Very much #GirlBoss energy and we all know how performative and cheap that is.
⢠The entire thing was too rushed, there was too little build-up, and it was nowhere near believable. As stated above, itâs ridiculously unlikely that Loki would canonically even be interested in Sylvie, and this show did nothing to explain why he was. He just suddenly was. There was nothing they showed us as viewers that would justify a guy as closed-off and preoccupied as Loki falling head-over-heels for a girl he just met. Their was no explanation, no big revelation, no reasoning, it just⌠kinda happened. And Iâm also severely skeptical of any love story that has the characters go in this deep after only 3 45-minute episodes of exposition.
Iâm sure thereâs other stuff, so if anyone thinks of anything, let me know and Iâll be more than happy to add it. Tagging @janetsnakehole02 @raifenlf @natures-marvel and @brightredsunset800 for expressing interest. This is all your faults.

---------------------------------------------------
You had met Aelin sometime after the war. She had been wandering around town a couple days after the coronation, smiling at children and waving at the elderly, observing the way the town was slowly filling again, people returning home now it was safe. There werenât many people about however, it just being seven in the morning.
She had walked past a shop then. It was small and rickety, the door barely on its hinges as a girl fought with it, swearing like a sailor.
âDo you need some help?â she asked, moving to stand beside the girl. You screamed instantly, jumping out of your skin at her sudden appearance, having not heard anyone coming due to how absorbed you were in your job. Aelin screamed when you screamed, and it left the two of you staring at each other with wide eyes before you fell apart in fits of laughter.
You stood from where you had bent to clutch your stomach, wiping tears from your eyes as you calmed down.
âJeez you fucking gave me a heart attack,â you laughed as she apologised, still giggling behind her hand. You then turned, hands on your hips as you glared at the door of your shop.
âRude men should be put down,â you muttered and Aelin was laughing again.
âThat I can get behind,â she said as you opened it, giving up on fixing it completely, Aelin gasping when she saw the inside.
âYou have a bookshop!â she exclaimed, and you laughed.
âHad, now I just have dusty books and a broken door. It was my motherâs beforeâŚâ you trailed off and Aelin put a hand on your shoulder.
âIâm sorry,â she said, and you shrugged.
âItâs fine, it was ages ago anyway,â you stepped further into the shop, going to the large window up front and tugging of the white sheet that obscured it from light. âHowever, this shop isnât dead yet so might as well get it done.â
Aelin looked around the shop, the paper on the walls was peeling, the paint on the shelves cracked and the books covered in a fine layer of dust. âDamn, where do we start?â she asked, rolling up her sleeves and grinning at you when you whirled around, frowning at her.
âDoesnât the queen have better things to do?â you asked, and she shrugged, laughing at your bewildered expression.
âIâm sure my husband will cope.â You gave her an unsure look at that, and she laughed, âHeâs competent.â
âIf you say so.â
âIf you knew I was queen you really have no fear of authority do you?â she asked as you started pulling books down and pilling them onto the sheet you just pulled off the window.
âRespect is earned, plus youâre the one who made me shit myself.â She laughed again, smiling widely, and helping you take down more books as she realised this was the most she had laughed since the war ended.
--
The worked all day. First removing the books and putting them upstairs in the rundown apartment you lived in, filled with plants, blankets, and somehow even more books. Next the repainted the shelves, setting them outside to dry while they re-wallpapered the walls and cleaned the floor until it was shining.
When the sky got darker you swore as you realised neither of you had eaten all day, going up to your new friend and asking her what she wanted for dinner.
âI make really good pasta,â you had suggested, and she had nodded enthusiastically as you went upstairs to your apartment, drinking wine as you cooked together. As you ate on the floor, drinking yet another bottle of wine, this time straight from the bottle Aelin asked about your past.
You assured her it was relatively normal, asides from the whole âevil tyrant thingâ as you put it. You talked together for hours, going back downstairs, and bringing the now dry, sage green shelves back in and putting all the books away, setting them in categories.
Hours later Aelin decided to go home, not wanting to worry so much and she opened the still broken door, the both of you laughing as you realised you had forgotten a pretty integral part.
âHey, you could just name the shop, âthe broken doorâ,â she suggested, and you smiled.
âThat would work.â
--
When Aelin got home she was met with a concerned Rowan, asking where she had been all day.
She smiled at him, pausing before answering, âI think I have a new best friend.â
Rowan frowned at that, âAnd what brings you to that conclusion?â
âToday was the first time Iâve laughed sinceâŚâ she trailed off as silence fell at the thought of their past few months, Rowan then bringing her in for a hug.
âYou know this means I have to meet her too then,â
âNope my best friend get your own.â She shoved him playfully, falling asleep next to him that night with a smile on her face.
--
They went to see you the next morning and Aelin laughed when she saw your dishevelled state.
âDid you sleep?â she asked when she walked into the shop and found signs put up and plants dotted around the room as you sat on the floor, drinking a coffee that smelt so strong she almost gagged, much preferring sweeter tastes.
âSleep is for the weak!â you said, half-heartedly raising your hand.
âAnd whatâs with all the plants?â Rowan asked, frowning as he almost walked into another and you sat up straighter, glaring at him.
âWhat you too good for plants?â you asked your hands moving over-exaggeratedly as you got to your feet. âDonât listen to him, heâs just a stinky man,â you whispered to the plants and Aelin laughed at her husbands offended face.
You stood and started walking upstairs, your feet dragging as you went to get breakfast. You heard them follow you and you pushed open the door to your flat.
You had even more plants up here and Rowan rolled his eyes as you moved to open the large windows, letting in fresh air, you then moved about making pancakes, mixing enough for the three of you and adding blueberries when you were finished.
You cooked them up while chatting idly with Aelin and Rowan, only receiving a small amount of judgement when Aelin discovered you didnât actually have a bed and instead just a mattress on the floor with a sheet for warmth and some soft pillows. Your house was newly decorated, art hung on the walls, plants and candles decorating every surface.
âTea, coffee, water, vodka?â you offered them drinks and Aelin whined.
âNo vodka, we had too much wine last night,â you laughed at that as you served up coffee and pancakes.
âYeah weâll have to go properly drinking some night,â you muttered, Rowan chuckling under his breath and nodding in agreement.
The three of you ate the rest of your food, laughing and joking together and Rowan really noticed the difference in Aelinâs manner. She hadnât been truly comfortable or at ease in months, always looking over her shoulder, but now she sat laughing with her friend and Rowan wanted to thank you a million times over for bringing her back out of her shell.
--
Since you first met Aelin you were meeting up almost every day, discussing books over tea and hanging out at your shop, or drinking from expensive glasses in her castle while trying on elaborate dresses. Soon you were practically apart of the family, but that didnât stop the confusion Fenrys felt when he walked into the castle and found a young girl sleeping on Aelinsâ bed, a book opened but abandoned on her chest.
He tentatively walked forward so he could see her more clearly and felt his heart clench when his eyes fall upon her peaceful face, her eyes closed, and hair spread around her head like a halo. He was about to reach a hand out to brush a strand of hair from her soft hair when he heard the door open, turning to see Aelin run in, wrapping her arms tightly around him.
âFenrys I didnât know you were back,â she said when she pulled back, bouncing on the soles of her feet excitedly and he laughed.
âAre you going to explain why thereâs a girl in your bed, or do I need to break some news to Rowan,â he joked and she shoved his shoulder before moving to the bed and shaking the girl awake.
âItâs just (y/n),â she explained as the girl huffed and rolled away from Aelin.
âAh of course this person who I definitely knew existed,â Aelin stuck her finger up at him as he laughed, unable to stop his eyes from trailing back to her.
He watched as she breathed in deeply, her eyes opening slowly as she took him in, before she pulled her covers up to over her chin and frowned at him and Aelin with a small pout.
âI was having the best dream every asshole,â she complained and Fenrys smiled as she sat up on her elbows and reached a hand out to him to shake, introducing herself. He brushed the shake of and instead brought her hand to his mouth pressing a kiss to the back of it as sparks show through her skin at the sensation.
âIâm Fenrys, ambassador of Terrasen,â he smiled cheekily as she shrunk away slightly, nerves taking over her, âhope to see you around more.â
He left, pressing a quick kiss to Aelinâs temple, and winking at you as Aelin moved over to you with wide eyes.
âAelinâŚâ you started as she squealed.
âHe was totally flirting with you! You would be such a cute couple, please, please ask him out I need you two to get married and have to worlds prettiest babies!â she was bouncing in hr seat as you moved to shut her up.
âOkay ONE, I just met him. And TWO, he was far too pretty for me,â you said and Aelin frowned.
âNope, nope you are incorrect, and he is going to fall in love with you,â she demanded, and you laughed, kicking her with your foot.
âMhm sure.â
--
The next few days, Fenrys was coming to your shop every day. He would bring chocolates and flowers some days, or coffee and pastries other days. Always dropping them off with a smile, before lounging in the plush, green chair in the corner of the shop and talking to you for hours. He has also started coming to your and Aelinâs weekly cocktail night, wrapping his arm around your shoulderâs and laughing drunkenly into your neck as you told stories.
However, through all this you remained âfriendsâ. He would press kisses to your cheek and hands, keep an arm slung around your waist when men came to speak at you at bars and primarily referred to you using pet names and rarely ever your actual name. And it was getting frustrating.
You were having to start putting genuine effort to not kiss him every time you had a drink and he sat extra close to you. Or when you were invited to parties, and he moved smoothly through the countless questions asking if you were dating.
And while you revelled in the attention it was tearing at your heart slightly as insecurities told you that he would never actually be interested in you. You wanted to scream at him every time he kissed you but wanted to melt into him every time he hugged you, your brain constantly at battle with itself when he was near.
You knew you were due to explode any time soon. So when you were out one night and he was holding you extra close, you pulled away, muttering an excuse about getting another drink.
Standing at the bar as you waited you rested you head in your hands for a second before you saw a man begin to approach you. He was attractive, not like Fenrys, but honestly you would take anything to get your mind of him at the moment, so you smiled at him, tilting your head.
âWhatâs a doll like you doing all alone?â he asked, his voice rough and gravelly, unlike the smooth, deep timbre you were used to, but you just laughed.
âWaiting for a man to not dehumanise me,â you bit back, and he raised his hands sheepishly.
âSorry about that, what would you prefer?â he flirted, sidling up closer to you as you turned to face him.
âCanât go wrong with maâam,â you joked, and he laughed, looking down and shaking his head, only to look back up, his eyes going wide. You felt a familiar hand wrap around your waist and looked up to see Fenrys, resisting the urge to roll your eyes as he glared at the man in front of you.
âWhat do you think youâre doing?â he asked, his voice deep and full of authority, the man in front of you shrinking under his gaze.
âShit sorry man, didnât realise she had a boyfriend,â he apologised and this time you did roll your eyes.
âHeâs not my-â you began but Fenrys cut you off.
âYeah she does, so back the fuck off.â You looked down as he spoke, shaking your head as tears of frustration built in your eyes. You harshly pulled out of his grip, leaving the bar as quickly as you could, wiping away the escaped tears as you heard Fenrys follow after you, shouting your name.
You whirled around when you got outside, your glare murderous.
âYou do not get to do that!â you shouted as he moved closer to you.
âSweetheart Iâm sorry,â he began but you cut him off.
âNO! I am not your girlfriend! You have never once asked me to be so you donât get to try scare away any guy that might have genuine interest in me!â his shoulders slumped as you spoke. Truthfully, he has been working up the courage to ask you out for months, and while he knew it was unfair how he treated you, he couldnât help himself. He was addicted. He thought of you constantly, the texture of your skin, the smell of your hair, the way your eyes lit up and the way you moved your hands as you spoke. So when he saw you engage with the man that had the audacity to talk to you, his grip tightened on his glass so much it shattered, ignoring the worried looks from Aelin and Rowan as he stomped over to you.
â(y/n) listen, Iâve been an asshole I know,â he raised his hands, tentatively stepping towards you, âBut I really care about you, and I want to be yours.â
You laughed bitterly, âYouâre just saying that.â
He shook his head vehemently, stepping closer to you again and wrapping his arms around your shoulders so gently, one would think you were made of glass.
âI love you darling, please be mine,â he said into your hair, and you pulled back, looking up at him through glassy eyes before nodding slightly.
âI love you Fenrys,â he smiled down at you before leaning down and pressing a gentle kiss against your mouth, pouring his heart into the action. You gasped slightly as your lips met and he smiled widely against your mouth as the bond clicked into place.
âYou know this means I now have an excuse to break the nose of any man that talks to you,â he whispered against your lips, and you giggled, shoving at his shoulder gently.
âIâm still annoyed at you,â you muttered, and his eyes darkened.
âWell Iâm sure I can make it up to you.â

In Defense of a Black Cyclops
In case my username didnât make it clear, the single most anticipated visual project for me is the MCUâs interpretation of the X-Men, which hasnât even been announced yet [officially]. And ladies and gents, I have found your Cyclops:
Good olâ Alfred Enoch, who we all know from Harry Potter and How to Get Away With Murder. If youâre not familiar with HTGAWM, know that his character goes from the de facto leader of the ragtag (murderers) and most cherished protege of Viola Davisâ Professor X to taking more of a grimdark turn after his girlfriendâs death. Sound at least somewhat familiar?
Enoch also embodies the physicality of the character well, seeing as to how heâs âslimâ, 6â˛4(!!), black, and notoriously lanky. Wait, one of these isnât like the others.
In general I hate fancasting. Everyone generally picks from the same pool of about 30 actors (Peeps, neither Taron nor Daniel is a good Wolverine choice. Argue with your mother!), and most all of it is based on physicality, except when it absolutely should be (like say, choosing a ~5â˛10 dark-skinned black woman for Storm).
And I think thereâs some malarkey afoot. I think there needs to be some serious consideration on part of fancasters and actual casting agents alike to rethink race when it comes to the [white] X-Men, especially since theyâre the X-Men of all teams. So Iâll make the case for a black Cyclops:Â
1. There is no quota on Black X-Men: Thereâs a bug in your ear thatâs been whispering lies to you for years, it says something to the effect of âWe need a black person on the team for diversity. How bout Storm?â And youâve gotten complacent. Storm does not have to be the only black person on your X-Men roster.
2. The X-Men represent diversity: Iceman is gay, Cyclops and Prof. X are disabled (sorta), there are plenty of women, oh and everybody except Storm is white. Of the A-List X-Men, there is only *one* POC character. Iâd argue that an MCU X-Men needs to champion diversity like never before.
3. The X-Men represent minority struggle while being mostly white: Thereâs a cognitive dissonance in the metaphor that has always been there, and for the most part, nobody cares. To appeal to the white readers of the 60â˛s, the X-Men were all initially white. That way, the message of the mutants could be related to the audience with a familiar face. We donât need to approach the problem that way in 202?
4. Just because thatâs the way itâs always been, doesnât mean thatâs the way it should be: The first line of defense. Sorry, that will never be a good justification for literally any idea. Itâs time for some more critical thinking.
5. We donât all want to be Bishop: So say youâre white and you have a kid who for his birthday having a costume party. Youâve bought some X-Men costumes and you want each kid to pick one. 9 white kids and one black kid show up to your house. As the kids deliberate who gets what costume, be it Cyke or Wolvie or whatever, you yell at everybody to âSTOP!â, point to the one black kid and tell him âYouâre gonna be Bishop. Thatâs it, end of story!âÂ
We donât all want to be Bishop. The black child could have the best Cyclops interpretation within him, but youâll never know if you donât let him try. And thatâs no different from the Black actors of Hollywood. Thereâs no reason why all of the black talent should *have* to compete for the role of Bishop or Storm, which Iâve discussed, while Joe Schmo can walk up and audition for literally anybody he wants.     Â
Jharrel Jerome is 23 and has an Emmy to his name. He needs to be in the MCU in some capacity, period. Stephan James is another. How bout Damson Idris. Ashton Sanders. But no, no, letâs fancast Dacre Montgomery or Ansel or Joe Keery again as [Human Torch, Wolverine, Iceman, Angel, Iâve literally seen it all.]
6. Nobody wants to see the B-team if it comes down to it. The next line of defense from your racebending naysayers after âThatâs the way itâs always been!â is âWell, what about Psylocke, Bishop, Forge and Jubilee?â who are otherwise known as B-tier X-Men. The problem is, weâve got limited time and limited spots.
So since the X-Men is all about wonky metaphors that make half sense, let me give you another: Letâs say somebody approaches you and says âHey buddy, I got two free concert tickets for ya! You can either see Michael Jackson Sings the Blues, or you can go see Justin Timberlake. Free of charge!â
Now, are you used to MJ singing the blues? No! Do you have a problem with going to see Justin Timberlake? No, heâs fine on a Wednesday! He had that one little diddy we liked that one time. Weâd love to see him eventually! But are you gonna say, âfuck that, Iâm going to see MJ Sings the Bluesâ regardless? Hell yes, because thatâs still Michael Jackson. Heâs gonna give the same amazing performance he always does, itâs just gonna be the blues. And speaking of blues...
7. Black is not Blue, Brown is not Blue: Raise your hand if youâve ever heard this one:Â âI donât care if youâre black, white, purple, or green, Iâm going to treat you all the same!â I will not say all have this intention, but some fancasters have noticed that the racial diversity is kinda low within the A-List X-Men, so they oh-so-generously give the following roles to a black or brown person: Iceman, Nightcrawler, Beast.Â
Notice the pattern? Itâs a microaggression, and itâs bullshit. What these fancasters are implicitly telling you is that, yes the actors will be black or brown, but when the action starts we can ignore that. Theyâll be blue by then. In other words, you in fact do care if theyâre purple or green. Nobody will cry foul if Dev Patel gets to play Nightcrawler (because thatâs a common one I see), but should Anna Diop be Starfire or Michael B. Jordan be Human Torch, I bet thereâd be backlash. Oh wait. If thatâs you, please stop acting like you actually value diversity. You donât want to see black or brown skin, period. Unless of course, itâs Storm (refer to point #1).
But wait, thereâs more! When brown characters get whitewashed in these movies, itâs crickets! So eventually itâs revealed implicitly that proclaimers of point #4 only care about it one way.
8. Professor X should not be black if youâre not willing to change anyone else: The next line of defense is that some people say the professor should be black, if anybody HAS to be racebent. Something something MLK Jr., Civil Rights or some shit. Number one, Iâm not reducing Professor X to being a magical negro for 9 white people (and Storm!) who for all intents and purposes get to have all the action. Number 2, the Professor X/MLK/Magneto/Malcolm X comparison is an oversimplifying disservice to ALL FOUR of those people. I hate that line whenever I see it, please watch a documentary my friends.Â
9. The Candidates for Racebending: For me, the A-List X-Men are Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman, Angel, Beast, Wolverine, Storm, Gambit, Rogue, Colossus, Nightcrawler, and Kitty Pryde. Now, who should be exempt from the racebending? Storm, sheâs our designated minority. Gambit, heâs Cajun and theyâre white (generally speaking, thatâs a fun bit of research). Wolverine, Colossus, and Nightcrawler, because their nationality/ethnicity was the whole point of the Giant-Size premise in the first place. Angel, because his character embodies a privileged white male. Beast and Iceman, I donât care one way or another (Point #7).
That leaves Cyclops, Rogue, Jean Grey, and Kitty Pryde. Now Jean Grey is a redhead, and we all know that every time a redhead is racebent people sharpen their pitchforks (Mary Jane, Wally West, Iris West), so I will cede the ground on Jean if only so that my ginger friends can get their rep. Kitty Pryde is Jewish, but Jews of color exist. Rogue is from the South. And Cyclops is, well, just Cyclops. That makes those three characters good options for more diversity. But allow me to make the case for Cyclops, specifically.
10. Itâs not just diversity for diversityâs sake: If you had to pick who the main character of the X-Men is supposed to be, most would say Cyclops. And so in a series that highlights racial discrimination in society, it makes sense that our main character be black. While changing Cyclopsâ skin color should not change who he is as a character, it *should* recontextualize it. Now, as an eventual increasingly radical leader of the X-Men, Cyclops would evoke real life figures such as Colin Kaepernick or, shall I say, Martin Luther King, Jr.
Not that most X-Men fans and writers truly think about what it means to be black anyways. Stormâs minority status is almost always put through the lens of her being a mutant and not her being a black woman. In other words, you canât argue that making a character black will fundamentally change his or her character when you havenât even analyzed the racial context of the black character(s) you already have. Another concept that the MCU X-Men should tackle: intersectionality.
11. Representation matters: I have to say it: Chadwick Bosemanâs Black Panther hit different. And now he is tragically gone. At the end of the day, the MCU moving forward is down its most prominent black male superhero. Which has implications beyond just the movies themselves.
The women are in good hands. Shuri, Okoye, and Nakia are badasses in Wakanda, Valkyrie is ruling Asgard, Storm is almost assuredly on the way, RiRi Williams has already been cast, and Monica Rambeau is here and sheâs not even at her most glorious yet. That doesnât even include variable Î, or the number of characters who can and will be racebent. And Iâll note again that to me, Gamora doesnât count, because sheâs green (#7 really pisses me off because itâs so blatant. I hate it). Of course from a behind the camera perspective we love black women getting work.
The men are a completely different story. Imma just go out and say it, I canât stand Falcon and War Machine [in the MCU] because theyâre not characters, theyâre just two of a slew of MCU minority sidekicks who have essentially been at the beck and call of Captain America and Iron Man, respectively. You cannot tell Falconâs story without mentioning Cap. The reverse is not true. Thereâs a whole essay that could be and have been written on âMinorities in the MCU, pre-Black Pantherâ. Remember, thereâs a reason BP made so much noise in the first place.
So excluding those two we have, letâs see, MâBaku, Blade, and Fury who arenât exactly the most superheroic superheroes, Eli Bradley is proooobably coming, I doubt Miles Morales is coming (because heâs just Peter Parker in the MCU), Luke Cage(?) Bishop(??), Sunspot(???), Blue Marvel(????). Not only are they not A-List, I would not put money on any of them being in the MCU any time soon.
Cyclops is thee Captain America of the X-Men. Heâs the frontman. Heâs the poster boy. Heâs the âboy scoutâ, which in other words means heâs the hero, if there has to be one. It would mean a lot right now, and specifically *right now*, if he were to be black. The MCU needs it. It NEEDS it.
12. The X-Men is the Summers Story: Iâll even make the case that if just one character needs to racebent, then it should be Cyclops, because that of course implies that other related characters need to be black because half of the X-Men universe is in fact a part of the Summers family.Â
So now Cable is black. Corsair is black. Havok is black. And one of the most central stories in the X-Men mythos, the Summers family drama, is now a black family drama set in space or the future or where the fuck ever. The concept is boundary pushing. When white families have drama in the media, it gets to be Game of Thrones or Star Wars, while when black families have drama in the media, it has to be black people arguing in a kitchen or living room about their various earthly traumas (Iâm @âing you, Mr. Perry). I mean, thatâs all fine and good often times, but I want my black family drama in space, dammit.
And again, this is the X-Men, the series thatâs all about *minorities* and their struggle, so again, why not?
Oh, and Iâll even throw out a Havok fancast for you: How bout Jharrel Jerome?
#cyclops#scott summers#the mutants#monica rambeau#X-men#xmen#marvel#MCU#fancast#jharrel would actually be a better sunspot#but you get the point#my man would have OPTIONS

Ok, so what in your opinion is the WORST mistake that the showrunners for Game of Thrones made in terms of content, either it's addition or redaction?
WARNING: Looooooong post ahead
Themes are for eighth-grade book reports
This absurd quote by one of the showrunners explains why exactly the show fell appart. They wanted to make a story... without themes. Anyone with a minimally functioning brain will tell that this is impossible because every story, even the simplest and least complicated story there ever, has a theme. Even a nihilistic story has a theme "Nothing matters". Every. Story. Has. A. Theme.
But Game Of Thrones didn't, at least not after the writers ran out of books to adapt and did their own thing. Everything every character did was no longer to build a narrative, but to essentially act as click-bait. The focus was to make people keep watching, not on making any content that was worth watching.
The first four seasons had it's problems, just like the books had it's problems, but Martin's writting was so brilliant that it managed to stay good even while being handled by absolute clowns. The moment season four ended was the moment the show stopped being an adaptation and became it's own thing - and like I explained before, said thing wasn't a story.
Shock
Both the show and the books had MANY shocking, heart-breaking and downright horrifying scenes: Daenerys being raped by Drogo; Bran being pushed out the window after accidentally seeing the queen fucking her brother; the whole deal with Craster and his daughters; the Dotrakhi destroying Mirri's village and her revenge against them and Daenerys; Ned's death; Melisandre giving birth to a shadow baby that killed Renly; The Red Wedding; Jeoffrey's death; Tyrion killing his father; Theon being tortured by Ramsay...
The difference is there were REASONS behind the shocking scenes Martin created. Even when you look at things like rape and torture scenes and threats of rape/torture - Martin used those scenes to remind us that the world he created is an EXTREMELY dangerous and downright vile place, and that the characters are never truly safe, and that there are WAY worse things than just being killed.
Dumb & Dumber on the other hand, gaves us scenes like an evil, former man of the night's watch evily making an evil speech to his fellow evil men, evily drinking whine from a human skull while nameless women were being raped in the background - but little does he know that Jon Snow, the hero, is about to wreck his shit. It takes something that could realistically happen (and that did happen in the books) and takes it up to eleven because the writers think shock is the same as quality and that the audience is SO STUPID that they need to practically make the actor jump out of the TV, grab us by the shoulders and scream "I'M EVIL! I'M THE BIG BAD! ROOT FOR THE HERO TO KILL ME!"
Pretty much every bad guy became a parody of Jeoffrey, ironically enough because the writers took Jeoffrey too seriously. He was a cruel, sadistic character, who had WAY too much power - but he was also a spoiled baby whose reply to Tyrion bitch-slapping him wasn't a threat, but "I'M TELLING MOM!" Jeoffrey worked because he was only allowed to do his thing whenever smarter, more competent characters like Tyrion and Tywin where not around, meaning his actions, while inhumane, never reached the point of no longer being believable.
The horrible things that happened to the characters no longer felt "right". For instance, Sansa had just been taken to the Eerie by Little Finger, who has a weird complex in which he sees her both as the daughter he never had with Catelyn AND as a replacement for Catelyn, and she was starting to truly be a player instead of a pawn... and then the writers realized "Oh shit, we should have not cut the Jeyne Pool/Fake Arya' plot, that was important" and forced it on Sansa, making Little Finger hand her on a silver plater to Ramsay and turning her into a victim AGAIN, this time to a man that dramatically fights his enemies without a shirt own, practically saying "come at me bro"
Compare this to Ned's beheading, or Catelyn and Rob being betrayed and killed by the Freys. These moments were shocking and downright depressing - but they were earned. The writting was on the wall for anyone to see: Ned was at the mercy of Jeoffrey, and the Starks had given the Freys, who are notoriously disloyal, a reason to resent them. These twists felt completely natural, were the only logical way for the situation the characters were in to play out, AND they had consequences to plot instead of just making the audience gasp and then being forgotten about.
Plot armor
It's kind of ironic and almost tragic that the show that became famous for killing characters later became the worst type of high-stakes series, putting the characters in situations they could NOT survive, not even if a goddamn miracle happened, and having them live anyway. What's even worse is that it happened repeatedly. If I had to see Jon Snow almost die and then survive anyway one more fucking time I was going to lose my mind.
There's no bigger proof that there were just no consequences for the "main" characters anymore than watching the second, third, and fourth episodes of season either. The first sets up that this battle against the night king and his army of undead is likely going to kill the majority of them, if they're lucky... and then in the third we see the plot armor in all of it's "glory", and then in the forth we find out that the Dotrakhi, who had ALL been killed, actually still have half the numbers they had the night before, somehow. Even red-shirts weren't dying anymore.
DORNE
This disaster needed it's own session because HOLY SHIT, it's a miracle/tragedy that everyone didn't go "Fuck it, I'm never watching another episode of this stupid show."
The Dorne plot in the books isn't perfect, but what the show did to it was so fucking bad that I'm pretty sure the writers didn't even read the Dorne chapters in the books, they just looked at a wiki, wrote down the names of a few characters and then did their own shitty thing.
In the books, Doran Martel is a clever, dangerous man, who pretends to be harmless so people will understimate him and step right into his trap. In the show, Doran Martel... died. That's it. I can't remember anything else that happened to him. Add him to the list of "Brilliant characters that became stupid due to shitty writing", I'm sure Tyrion, Varys and Little Finger will love making him company.
The sand-snakes, one of the main driving force of that plot, were all distinct characters in the books, with their personalities, goals, methods and motivations - basically they were created by a writer who knew what he is was doing. In the show they were all the same "character" who could be perfectly described by that horrible, cringy, PAINFUL line one of them (I can't even remember which) said to Bron "You want a good girl, but you need the bad pussy" (Seriously, if that actress ever kills the show-runners as revenge for having to say that, she'll be 100% justifyed in doing so)
And we cannot forget the driving force behind that unwatchable shit show: Ellaria Sand. In the books, the death of Oberyn made her believe that revenge only leads to more blood-shed. In the show, his death enraged to the point of wanting to avenge him and his family, and she did this... by killing his family. If that doesn't explain how insane and stupid this plot-line was, I don't know what will.
Hype = Character assassination
Many shows are based around the conflict between the bad guys and the good guys. Game Of Thrones is not one of these shows. Or at least it wasn't. As they ran out of ideas, the writers started mutilating every single character until they could be label as "Good" or "Bad", regardless of what felt right to the story and to the point that there was nothing left of said characters. Stannis's actor, Stephen Dillane, straight up said that the only thing he got from being on the show was money and that his character's motivations and decisions were nonsense - ironically enough, that kind of brutal honesty means that the writers had THE perfect actor play Stannis, and wasted his fucking time.
Here's a list of the characters that fell victims to this horrible fate: Catelyn Stark, Tyrion Lannister, Sansa Stark, Arya Stark, Jon Snow, Melisandre, Stannis, Jorah, Daenerys (bonus points for being mutilated into being both a generic, shitty "hero" and a generic, shitty "villain") Greyworm, Rhaegar Targaryen, Lyanna Stark...
Pretty much the only character who became more complex in the show than she was in the books was Cersei. While her book self was never just a "Generic Evil Queen", the show version of her was far more sympathetic, which made the stories she was part of interesting. Too bad the writers ran out of ideas of what to do with her after season six and just left her by the window drinking whine until Dany showed up to kill her. Which brings us to...
Why is this happening?
Cersei was seen as a threat in the last two seasons based on nothing but the things she HAD done. Her story just ended the very second season six did, but since she was still alive despite being one of the bad guys she had to die... I guess. She (and by extention Jaime) joined the list of characters that had nothing to do, but were still around: Davos, Theon, Yara, Melisandre, Bron, Sam, Gendry, Bran (the last one being SO unnecessary that he was cut from season five and no one noticed)
To combat that issue, the writers gave characters "motivations" that made no sense. For exemple: Sandor Clegane. His only reason to be in the show was so he could kill his brother. The problem was that Gregor was already dead. He was a walking corpse. There was nothing left of the abusive brother Sandor once knew, meaning he had no reason to fight him, and that, to keep Sandor around, the writers should have come up something new (like the redemption that book fans have been waiting for, and that has a lot of backing evidence). You might as well have had HIM be the one to randomly fly out of nowhere and kill the night king despite having no connection to him.
And since we're talking about the night king... Arya was the one to kill him. Why? Because the writers ruined Jaime's redemption arc, meaning that the only fitting ending for him was to die with Cersei, and so Arya could not kill Cersei despite wanting to, having the ability to do, AND having heard a prophecy that said she'd "Shutting brown eyes, blue eyes, and green eyes forever", the last one being the only one she had not done AND applying to Cersei. But Dumb & Dumber admitted they had no plan for this, so now that they were at the last season, they needed to do something with it, and they retconned it to mean Arya would kill the night king...
But Arya killing him meant Jon had nothing to do, so Dany had to go mad so he could kill her. To "hint" at that, they ignored all the not at all subtle foreshadowing the previous season had of Dany and Jon having a kid, and they even showed her getting jealous that he was technically the true heir... even though that made no sense since they were going to rule together anyway, and even after Dany went full "Mad Queen" she ASKED HIM TO RULE WITH HER. But anyways, he kills her and becomes king...
Except he doesn't actually become king and him being a secret Targaryen has no effect in the plot, because Bran needed to become king so there'd be a reason for him to be alive, because his magical powers turned into a plot-device. A plot-device that wasn't used at any goddamn point. Seriously, the only thing as bad as Bran becoming king was Euron's existence - dude was THE most useless villain ever AND the worst Jeoffrey parody.
A darker story (literally)
I could not end this rant without bitching about this. What is the point of spending an ungodly amount of money on sets, costumes, make-up, special effects... and then using such poor lighting that no one can see what the fucking is going on?
Anyway, this disaster of a series was so absurd it should be used as an exemple of what NOT to do.

X-men Evolution; the great 2021 rewatch liveblog
exactly what it says on the tin, about halfway through the show I had TOO MANY FEELINGS and had to start writing some of them out haha (gets quite gambit & rogue/gambit heavy in the latter half, Because of Who I Am as a Person)
- this is my childhoodâs x-men, my formative experience with them, and Iâm happy to report that still seems like a good thing. the little eleven year old within me gets to geek out and have a good time with the characters and the surprisingly good animation and writing, adult me gets to CACKLE at regular intervals at the fashion/technology/absolute bonkers hot garbage comic book nonsense they use to justify a storyline every now and then, itâs been a good timeÂ
- I was like âah well it is super dated it probably wonât be quite the same nowâ and then rogueâs HAIR did the THING in the opening and âitâs all coming back to me nowâ started playing in the background... the little baby queer in me swooning across time and space
- such a good beast, both his design and the writing, my heart aches for him all the time. heâs just so passionate! about being a teacher! helping young humans learn the stuff theyâll need in life! the most wonderful nerd man, just let good things happen for him
- Iâm going to go ahead and assume that rogueâs âcrushâ on scott is more of a deeply complex psychological process about desiring normalcy and intimacy and trying to figure out if sheâs queer and dealing with her emerging sexuality and latching on to the first and best safely unavailable and nonthreatening older boy to project these issues onto rather than actually being a real thing, because I respect her so much as a person and I cannot bring myself to imagine sheâs honestly attracted to a man who has POSTERS OF CARS on his bedroom wall. (Iâll give jean a break just because she seems to have a longer deeper history with him that might counteract some of that libido-kill, and also sheâs a jock so lol)
like I am very sorry but can u imagine being a teenage girl with any interest in a boy with model cars in his bedroom when gambitâs swanning around being a much, much, much worse choice on almost every possible level but in a teen girl kryptonite kind of way? inconceivable Â
(I drag scott quite a few times in this and itâs not because I donât love him, itâs just his tragedy to be the most draggable man in the world)
to be fair by the time gambit shows up that whole Situation has mostly played itself out I suppose but still Â
- toadâs design is so ineffably brilliant, I canât quite tell you why but that ugly cute charm has really stuck with me, heâs one of the characters I remembered the best to this day just visually
- poor evan... he truly never had a chance, did he, they just saddled him with the most 90s teen bullshit they could come up with like heâs some kind of âwhat adult writers think teens likeâ frankensteinâs monster ;______; itâs not your fault honey
- poor poor POOR storm, she gets one focus episode and they were like âweâre going to make an episode so racist -- â
Iâm still STUNNED at how bad it was, but undeniably I laughed hysterically to the point that my neighbours were probably worried when that dude was earnestly like âHe [stunningly breathlessly racist caricature of a âwitch doctorâ guy] has stolen her powers, and heâs going to use them to take over Africa!!!â fhajsdlfhsakjldfh oh really? tell me more, like how the fUCK this could be on television within my life time fasdlfhsdkjfhsad f just... fahjksdfh
- itâs a testament to gambitâs appeal as a character that his charm can survive what theyâve done with his hair and beard choices in this one fajskfhs regrettable but true I still fuckn LOVE him and in my highly biased yet Correct opinion he should have been around much more. get you a man who manages to stay hot through sheer Vibes even with a bowl cut
- aw scott/jean is kind of sweet in this show even if itâs taking them forEVER to get there, I like itÂ
- itâs very nice of rogue to not mention magnetoâs romantic daydreams and nostalgic memories about charles xavier after touching his face that one time... or maybe her brain did her a service and repressed it, thereâs some stuff you shouldnât have to know about your father figure Â
- the danger room is the very definition of âwhy do we even have that leverâ and I wonder what the fuck prof x does to have enough money to replace everything that gets busted all the time
- Iâd say that a lot of the writing holds up surprisingly well! (but some of it is also incredibly inexcusably racist in ways that beggar belief, so... not full marks here) the characters have distinct voices and their arcs are set up and delivered on solidly for the most part, and thereâs a lot of love showing through in small moments that are just there to have a funny/interesting thing to say about the characters and how their powers work separately and in combination. listen, sometimes I get so thirsty for like. basic goddamn competency in storytelling, let me have this
- ugggggh why is there captain america in my x-men have I not suffered enough... very very funny when prof x goes âsounds like you knew rogers personallyâ and logan is like âI did ;)â *all the students ganging up on steve rogers* âdid you fuck our teacher, captain america?!â
- fskadfhas WHY are you showing me hot young-ified magnetoâs ass fksjahfskj charles is not even here to see it, what a tragic waste erikÂ
- ...I was sort of kidding before but uh I think logan genuinely did fuck captain america (or at least wishes very much that he did lol)
- wanda can have a little watching the world burn. as a treat for the way every single adult in her life has fucking failed her (âarenât they treating you well hereâ professor x sheâs in a straightjacket)Â Â
- poor rogue tho can you imagine finding out after your biggest crush on a girl yet that sheâs your fucking MOM in disguise... I would break out in cold sweat every time I thought about a boob forever after
- well seems like they really just had all that homoerotic rivalry stuff between quicksilver and spyke in their first ep only to never do anything with that again ever?? I mean even without the gay undertone that seems like a dynamic you spent most of an episode setting up writers what the hell haha
- dslhfkasjlh GAMBITÂ THERE HE IS MY BOY IS ON THE SCENE THIS IS NOT A DRILL!!! I donât even care about his awful hair situation or the fact that his eyes are wrong here (coloured contact lenses, maybe, for a watsonian explanation? though heâd probably have to get them made special, considering he needs the sclera and the iris covered up in different ways, Iâve seen some comic panels indicating he has been known to?)
(cute little detail: when he shuffles the cards the first time we see him he ends with removing the top card to show the ace of hearts beneath <3 foreshadowing baBEY heâs a... good-ish boy deep down. hey he tries okay shit gets complicated sometimes lol)Â
- cracking UP at gambit perched cheerily on the edge of a crate dispensing cards in the middle of the battle... heâs like âeh itâs a livinâ sfsajkhf remy stop working for supervillains just because you had nothing to do on a thursday afternoon and they said theyâd pay you
- Iâm guessing magneto must have imposed a strict order of silence on these guys or something because I cannot imagine any other reason for him to shut up, especially once he notices rogue is a QTE (or, far more likely, they hadnât settled on any voice actors for the new characters until next season haha. it is kind of odd that theyâre all keeping up near monastic silence, though, even sabertooth lol)Â
- WHAT an epic first meeting for us rogue/gambit fans here... first his shadow like thereâs fireworks going off behind him lighting him up and then he gives her the fuckn king of hearts and sheâs so enchanted by his dumb handsome face she doesnât even notice itâs about to blow up in her hands and it all happens in heavily meaningful silence afjsdfjashjk no wonder this ship ingrained itself in my hindbrain Â
yeah look smug while you can remy sheâs gonna have you on your knees one day and youâll be happy about it lol
- god storm is so COOL, everything just fading out of focus when she really gets going... give her more screen time, show!!
- mystique is every person... this person... that person... that bird... that cat... that wolf... Iâm not even sure sheâs not also me... are you sure sheâs not you?Â
- holy fuck I respect the hell out of the decision to just... blow up the entire status quo in a season ender, I only vaguely remembered that (actually in general I appreciate how good the continuity is -- buildings and places that get damaged in battles need to be repaired or rebuilt, it makes the consequences feel more real even when no one gets seriously hurt. where they get the money to restore scottâs car and loganâs motorbikes every time they go cablooie is still an open question tho lol is it credit card fraud, professor? is it telepathically acquired blackmail???)Â
- I first watched this when I was nine or so, so itâs a real experience to go from my starry eyed intrigued âoh my god... theyâre teenagersâ to my horrified adult perspective of âoh my god... theyâre TEENAGERS D:â
that goes double for the brotherhood boys honestly, Iâm here with tears in my eyes like âIâm sorry the system has failed you so badly youâre all just a bunch of dumb kids whose caretakers clearly fucked up spectacularlyâ Â
like lance is always waiting for mystique to come back because sheâs the closest thing he has to a safe parental figure, may we speak about how crushingly depressing that isÂ
- rogue is so ready to throw hands at literally any moment and for that I love and treasure her immensely (I think getting to see her be so surly and unreasonable and sometimes difficult and jealous, like any teenager, meant a lot to me as a kid who was not really allowed to be any of these things, this version of the character has stayed with me so deeply. she holds on so fiercely to her right to feel what she feels and be what she is even when itâs âuglyâ or unreasonable, which I think plays in really interestingly with how her powers involve getting invaded by other peopleâs thoughts and memories to the point of overwhelming her own sense of self and the fact that she clearly has a lot of self-loathing and self-consciousness and confusion about her identity as well. I love her so much)Â Â
- oooof this is the âthe gang experience a microaggressionâ episode huh (well more like macroagressions really)
hits a bit different with adult eyes and perspective huh
- hearing jean sound almost like a child when she says âthatâs so unfair!â somehow has me like ;______; -- she has to be so adult and responsible all the time, and having her be reduced to the kid she still is and should get to be in front of this awful awful man she could squash like a bug with the flick of a thought... ugh Iâm Big Sad (it is funny that jean seemingly plays Every Sport tho djfhaskj)
- MY BOY IS BACK!!! this time with the duster coat and his eyes the right colour, im so happy (too bad about the subdued colour scheme tho; I adore his dumb bright pink getup with my whole heart)
itâs kind of adorable that he takes the time to take the bullies aside and go âI know these guys canât wreck you without getting expelled, but I think youâll find no law set down by god or man would stop me from doing so whenever I wanted to. so piss off and leave them aloneâ lol heâs looking out for them, in his own way
- in this episode: remy lebeau wrangles some kids while looking bored yet mildly amused the whole time. what the fuck does magneto have on you for you to agree to this level of babysitting duty buddy
- fun detail I noticed b/c when I get a fave I hyperfixate: he gave rogue the king of hearts before, but he âintroducesâ himself to the brotherhood here (lol) with the jack of hearts, probably to symbolize heâs here as someone who works for magneto in this setting and not as his own man? itâs a demotion heâs given himself there, anyway, might be heâs not very pleased about his current position huhÂ
- I like it when rogue and kitty team up, theyâre not very effective together but their squabbling is so cute and non-aggressiveÂ
- pietro is what draco malfoy would be if I ever found malfoy interesting to watch for even one moment, every time quicksilver talks Iâm like âwhat wonderfully insufferable thing is going to come out of your mouth this time you little shit :â)â
- a) why are scott and logan shirtless for this scene? I am not complaining on the logan side of things at least but why and b) I laughed so hard I almost fell off my couch when scott asked logan if heâd ever been in love and he was like âonce. she was the most beautiful bike I ever sawâ falsdfhaskjfhsakjlfhasklhjfd THE BEST VERSION OF WOLVERINE EVER, ACCEPT NO SUBSTITUTESÂ
- mystiqueâs sheer dedication to being a petty bitch is kind of inspirational tbh, almost makes me want to go on a completely bonkers and extra crusade of personal revenge myself Â
- oooh theyâre doing some genuinely cool things with vision/lack of vision in this one (itâs the scott left on his own in the desert without glasses one btw) even visually, dang! Iâm so sad this show didnât get more seasons than it did, honestly, it deserved it
- hell yeah jean wreck her, go get your man with the suspiciously specific clothing damage normally done to female charactersÂ
awww :â) okay yeah theyâre super sweet, I love the tiny loving animation details like how he leans his head against her and her stroking his hair away from his eyes
- nooo donât bully evan leave my t0tally r4dical sk8er boy alone :(
- I love the running joke of people fleeing in blind panic only to reveal that what theyâre running from is kittyâs cheerful well meaning little face fskfaskhÂ
- scott and jean are already peak married after officially being together for one episode and itâs adorable, and they just stone cold threw logan under the bus, rip wolverine we hardly knew ya
fjasdlfasldfhslajdkfhsadkjlfhsdkjalfhsdakfh h jean establishing herself as the alphabitch of this relationship by throwing her man to the wolves right after dsjfhaskjfhaskjhfsakjdhfaskjhfaskdhfskjahfskdajhf get smarter or get volunteered scottÂ
- ...eyepatch lady is so hot ngl
oh evan went to the place hank used to go to calm down ;________; (honestly heâs kind of won a place in my heart just by being a pretty normal teenage boy haha)
- jesus fucking CHRIST can you imagine being storm having to look her sister in the eye as she tells her âI lost your only child, heâs *vague gesture* somewhere in the sewers we thinkâ this poor woman
- amanda the self admitted monster fucker you are so VALID (I love her and her familyâs design so much tho!)
- itâs so cool that even in his human âdisguiseâ kurtâs fingers follow the shape of his actual hand beneath it rather than moving like a five fingered hand, itâs such a lovingly consistent little detailÂ
- magneto and mystique in a breathless race to see who can be the shittiest parent... tune in next week for yet another parental nadir (also some low-poly gambit appearances in this one, for those at home keeping score (me), heâs in the background looking like someone drew him with their eyes closed fakjldfhasd look how they massacred my boy)
- someone please teach the brotherhood boys about consent huh
- jean âsoccer mom before her timeâ grey and her SUV dfhakjlhds :â)
- im sobbing rogue baby girl iâm so sorryyyyyy, this voice actress is so good, my parental instincts suddenly kicked into overdrive hearing the crack in her voice :( (bb me was right tho rogue centric episodes ARE the best episodes. that tension between âdo I identify witn this character or am I crushing on her?? both???â now has the fun new addition of âoh god oh no you are a baby I want to shield you with my body from everything trying to hurt youâ)
- mystique is like âso you see despite you telling me you never wanted to see me again I completely disrespected that and posed as a friend your age, manipulated you by offering you the mirage of direly needed emotional intimacy and belonging and added some sprinkles of homoerotic tension to it just to massively worsen your already existing grievous psychosexual trauma and identity issues... out of loveâ
god go jump in a black hole you fucking monsterÂ
- thereâs some very interesting and quite subtle subtext about the people sheâs morphing into and what that says about her mental state/how it shows off some of her emotional baggage with the rest of the team. itâs like sheâs switching between people/powers that fit the purpose as if sheâs going through cycles of fight/flight (and then bursts of freeze where sheâs herself, which is... so sad)
- this whole episode is hurting my heart but rogue at full power is undeniably epic Â
 - âprofessor x get your goddamn act together and get this poor girl some fucking tHERAPYâ challenge
- SAFE PAPA LOGAN ;_____;
- EYYYYYY opening straight on My Lad, I cannot stop winning!!!!!Â
fasdfhsad disintegrating the window with a smiley face... remy I do love you more than my heart can bear honestly, hello may we speak about the fact that his urge to be a little shit is so deep and strong it survives mind control (that little breathed out âhiah!â as he vaults the fence too dsakfjsd)
hahaha and he does up the coat fhsalfdsajÂ
- magneto dismissing other telepaths like âpuh-lease, your Meaningful Looks have got nothing on my ex-husbandâsâÂ
- :â) rogue and kurt sibling timeees
- say what you want but this pyro guyâs got job satisfaction in being a creepy arsonist with a weird recurring horse theme (well at least twice but still weird)
- I love how beast is the kindest man to ever walk the earth but also straight up savage, this man drags people so hard their ancestors wince in their graves
- gambit taking the time to complete the guardâs game of solitaire -- this episode is giving me everything I want. u little disgrace mr lebeau
and THEN he takes the spider out in the most hilariously bonkers way my heart is so FULL
(I love that when magneto moves by he looks startled and has to quickly move his head out of the way to avoid getting kicked in the temple too thatâs a fun detail)
Iâm so INTO how this sequence shows off that his greatest strength isnât even his powers (which are pretty straightforward, really, he makes go boom, longer time and bigger thing bigger boom) but that heâs clever and creative and always extremely ready to be the most harebrained-bananapants-extra-in-a-deceptively-laidback-sort-of-way person in the room (I actually have some genuinely Deep Thoughts about how his whole character does a really interesting thing with having the straightforwardly destructive nature of his powers yield to what his nature as a person is, and how using the playing cards play (heh) into it, maybe Iâll write it out some day. just the fact that he could use anything, but he deliberately chose something that adds style and playfulness and corny charm to it and that also limits the damage of the explosions compared to if he habitually used something with more mass... I find it fascinating how much heâs made a story around himself with it and how deeply it shows he does have a good heart, at the end of the day, in almost a metatextual way. he doesnât want to destroy things or people, heâs at worst (and best lol) a thief.)
- I honestly have literally no memory of white nick fury (which seems so weird now isnât it funny) in this series from when I was a kid, he clearly did not make an impression on me lol
- mr wolverine âassigned canadian at birthâ x-menÂ
- oh man I dig the androgynity of x-23â˛s outfit (even tho they had to compensate with the long hair, which... kind of doesnât make sense in-universe but does on a design level because itâs a crucial thing that sheâs a female clone of logan so yeah okay fine whatever have your arbitrary gender markers if you must haha)
ooooooh thatâs actually really clever, they make her gender gradually more obvious as she unravels through the episode and her outfit changes -- first the mask coming off, and then her jacket opening to show her silhouette more clearly, thatâs cool! Â
- my god what really sets this show apart is how much it invests in little character and relationship moments, itâs just so fucking GOOD! it gives laura looking in on those moments such depth and weight because itâs new to her but established to us as an audience, this is how you make found family devastating people (storm growing bonsai trees is so charming too haha)Â
- ooof this is honestly quite harrowingÂ
SHEâS SO SMALL COMPARED TO HIM IâM CRYING (at least that part of his genes translated over faslkfsjdh short king, I say this with all the love and support of a fellow short monarch)Â Â
- tabitha seems to just be running around doing precisely whatever the fuck she wants and you know what I support her even if she is an asshole her father left her a bunch of trauma and no fucks left to giveÂ
- still thrilled about professor x explaining the spider key fuckup to magneto after the fact like âmagnus you dumb bitch this is why we split upâÂ
- awww kitty has anime and movie posters on her wall and sleeps with a stuffed toy :â)
-     remy              rogue
               đ¤
doing completely unnecessary parkour around the brotherhood living room seemingly just for the hell of it... Iâm not saying soulmates but fucking soulmatesÂ
- fhsadkjlfhsakjldfhsadjkfhsdajkfh just as gambitâs soul-level need to be a little shit survived his bout of mind control, rogueâs deep and urgent desire to kiss gambit full on the mouth survived hers I canât breathe
she looks so pleased with herself too GOOD FOR YOU GIRL at least get something out of this other than more traumaÂ
also not only the fact that heâs smart enough to figure out whatâs going on (though heâs only partially right about whoâs behind it. I do so enjoy gambit/mystique deep and sincere antipathy as a constant across all universes tho lmao pure wlw/mlm hostility) but also that he keeps fending her off like heâs not trying to hurt her even though sheâs in nigh on unstoppable and invulnerable terminator mode... awwwÂ
- gambit having absolutely no patience for wolverine and sabertoothâs bullshit macho-off and consistently being this little biker trioâs one brain cell is adding years to my life with every passing moment
his voice is a little different in these scenes too, a bit softer and less like heâs trying to impress someone, itâs nice
- hank: well I barely recognize any of these (completely made up) âancient egyptian hieroglyphsâ but from what I can make out -- *proceeds to infodump a perfect coherent narrative* fjdhfak Â
listen this whole thing is such nonsense on so many levels, Iâm just turning my brain off so I wonât have to think about it okay, the compulsion to put ancient aliens in egypt haunts us as a cultureÂ
- I am CACKLING about gambit in the snow after having to listen to these two chucklefucks ooze testosterone at each other for hours
he started out taking it in good cheer and is now reduced to âdieu would both of you just jump off this fUCKING mountain pleaseâ
- ah. a little oops-a-daisy there, we seem to have unleashed the apocalypse. please stand by (they really donât pull their punches with the season cliffhangers in this show haha)
- opening the season on gambitâs merrily grinning face is the easiest way to gain my favour. yes good this season may commenceÂ
baby u r my
 ANGELLLLLLLL
(heâs so cute here tho haha I think it shows the design isnât unsalvagable, just get him better hair and stubble more like logan has and youâve basically got it)Â
love his exasperated eyeroll when the dude gets spooked (by his eyes? or just the general weirdness?) too
heâs just trying to keep this crazy family of evil mutants together and unmurdered by one another until theyâve managed to avert the end of the world, bless him Â
- oh NO rogueâs LIP wobbles my hhhhhheart ;____; such a good animation detail to put in
- like... I know kurt is just a sad scared teenager with a lot of shit going on and all the adults are too busy averting the end of the world to help him... but buddy maybe donât ask your sister to wake her abuser (who forced her to kickstart the end of the world!!!!!) when she feels utterly unsafe even with her statue version around huh
- ...wanda is good and I want only good things for her. and for her dad to be disemboweled for what he did to her both the first time around and when he forced her to forget I mean whatÂ
- magneto throwing an epic satelite-slinging tantrum b/c âno I am the biggest sexiest strongest mutant of the pack :(... erik fucking get over yourselfÂ
- yes boys absolutely go along with a plan suggested by a dude who looks at you like thisÂ
nothing bad can come of this surely asdfkhsa
- lanceâs quarter of a braincell always trying to go âhey wait, maybe... not do this???â and it never helps lol
- in this episode: Logan Has A Bad DayÂ
...some very specific bondage positions heâs held in here, I am sure this episode awakened something in someone once upon a time lolÂ
- logan shielding x-23 with his body... im fine itâs okay Iâm not crying donât look at me
- afsdhlsdfjasdlk those sure are some âscottishâ accents flsadkjhkdsjahfsd
- scott relieved to finally be able to cede the position of âcharles xavierâs least favourite sonâ to someone else fjsaklfhsajd (poor scott itâs not your fault honey)
supremely cowardly to suggest there is an ex-wife involved rather than charles slutting his way around the british isles back in the day but okay
- kurt with a cold is the cutest thing Iâve ever seen. itâs okay kid itâll get better soon
- ...is there an implication here that professor x is naturally blond. because I am losing my entire little mind about it (i mean he at least has to carry the gene, as does this lady?)
ETA: upon doing some research into this I can indeed confirm that charles xavier does seem to be naturally blond, and after this knowledge I will never be the sameÂ
-Â âlisten, draculaâ fskdafghasd oh scott you sweet baby angel I love you
- I know jeanâs abilities are a bit âas strong or as weak as the plot needs right nowâ at this point (so you can have the setup for whatâs going to happen with them eventually and sheâs basically invincible ;____;), and normally Iâm cool with it but god I want her to just squash lucas like a little bug
- ewwwww please donât ever say âdaddyâ like that again
- ...what the fuck is even going on this episodeâs a messÂ
like okay the split personality thing could be something but the way itâs done... what just happened lol
- MY BOY EVAN IS BACK! with a real glowup too (...though kind of weird how he suddenly looks like a grown man)
- augh scottâs eyes are so pretty oh my god ;__________________________;
- that episode in the first season where evan makes the âthis is my new family!!â video is so sad now (also, again, his poor poor parents)Â
- time for: life affirming road trip with gambit (involuntary) faskljdfhaskjd
stunt therapist remy lebeauÂ
- I mean the way he goes about it is batshit insane and itâs very much secondary to what heâs actually up to but this is the first time rogueâs sounded genuinely hopeful and confident and like herself in like a season <3Â
- he is disconcertingly pleased about her nearly throwing him off the train, and may I just say I agree itâs so nice to see rogue with her old fire backÂ
- the first time I watched this it was of course dubbed into norwegian, so I had no idea either of these characters were southern lol (though to be fair I probably wouldnât have had much context for what it meant exactly either, I was like ten at the time and not too interested in america) I seem to dimly remember the norwegian voice actor did a little more of a âfrenchâ-tinged accent for gambit all over tho haha Â
- you know what respect where itâs due, pyro dude knows to live his life for the lols and one has to admire his sociopathic dedication to it
interesting that he, too, seems to have fucking hated magneto -- I wonder if the implication here is that he kept all the acolytes in line with blackmail or by keeping something/one hostage? (except sabertooth maybe heâd just have to say âyou get to fuck shit up and fight wolverineâ and thatâd be enough)
- fsdakfhsd heâs so focused on her he doesnât notice that guy about to hit him fkafhsaÂ
- fuck everything else except whatever the hell these twoâve got going on
- itâs weirdly cathartic to have rogue have a conversation with someone who was not happily adopted as well, I donât think kurt like. gets it because his parents loved him unconditionally and still doÂ
birds of a feather motherfucker Â
- fun detail: when the x-men team are on the shore and logan is sniffing around scott is stepping in something and trying to wipe it off his boots in the background
- when he wakes up after passing out from the touch heâs smiling even though sheâs standing over him looking like the rage of god outlined by the moon fsajfsa well the last time he passed out like that it was from a kiss, maybe he still has some hopes and dreams in that direction lol (also he recovers from the tumble down the hill first and is checking on her before accidentally brushing her cheek with his hand, which I thought was sweet)Â
and it was in that moment he knew he fucked up *passes out*
- âI can explainâ can u remy. can u Â
- did it ever even occur to you to just. ask her. to help you. I mean I know it didnât but like rogueâs always one second away from throwing hands with some bully and is stupidly ride or die, if youâd given her the puppydog eyes she would have crumbled immediately (fair enough I guess this entire episode is telling us heâs not from a background where he has much experience with people just helping him without a price haha)Â
- his eyes glowing when heâs angry or upset or using a lot of his power is undeniably cool as all hell. Iâm just saying it would be Big Sexy if they sort of flickered with light in moments of genuine vulnerability okay Â
- his coat... his coat is what makes the Silhouette tm and I could not be happier about itÂ
- another parent of the year contestant enters the running lol âhey remy have you ever considered that youâre more of a walking bomb factory than a person? thatâs certainly how I think of you hahaha câmon kid letâs goâÂ
- the running joke of jean luc getting dollar signs in his eyes seeing the other mutant powers and gambit being like ânO!!!!â and pulling him along is amazing haha
- from the way he looks when he touches rogue accidentally and the way he talks to his dad Iâm sort of getting the feeling this gambit might actually be a bit younger than he looks?
here too -- idk why but itâs making the âwait is he baby???â alarms go off in my head haha. very early twenties at most.Â
- and weâve officially seen him with all the face cards in the heart suit folks! (yes this is the sort of thing my brain notices no I donât know either)
- poor logan running his ass off this whole episode in a panic and then sheâs like ânah heâs fine (in several meanings of the word ( ͥ° ÍĘ ÍĄÂ°) ) please put him downâ hfaskfsda
- rogue without makeup!!! her eyes look so naked like this haha <3
- oooh hereâs a really interesting thing that tickles my brain a bit in this specific part of the scene where gambit frees his dad -- the part where heâs leaning against the door frame waiting for jean luc, whoâs about to suggest using the opportunity to ruin the rival gang from the inside rather than slipping away while they still can
from his expression here he knows whatâs about to happen, what jean luc is about to say, and itâs clearly a âman who thought heâd lost all hope loses last additional bit of hope he didnât even know he still hadâ sort of situation. he KNOWS what jean luc is like, and it still hurts that he really, honestly canât give him even this, canât appreciate that remyâs already done all this shit for him when he extremely didnât have to, without immediately (no really, it took him less than ten seconds to go there? jesus) demanding more. Â
remy tells him âIâm just here for youâ and jean luc does not understand it. remy seems to be sincere in this motivation -- rogue certainly thinks so, having experienced it second hand and found enough at least emotional merit in it to decide he was worth saving even after all his bullshit (lol a bit of a running theme maybe. I think itâs very telling that after she absorbed mystique she was like âwhat the FUCK youâre a fucking monsterâ, and after she absorbed gambit she went âyou did the wrong thing for the right reasonsâ after she got over the first wave of outrage)Â
thereâs also what he says as he stands there: âYou donât need me for thatâ, with the distinct implication that jean luc would only keep him around because he has a use for him and for no other reason -- and then jean luc shamelessly doubles down on that by specifying that itâs not even him heâs got a use for as such, just his powers. thatâs some kicking puppies level of deliberately missing the point, itâs almost impressive in how cheerfully mean it is haha
this idea of using people is really important in this episode because remyâs doing basically exactly the same thing to rogue to begin with; it doesnât really matter to his plan that itâs her thatâs with him through this, just what her powers are. (I think itâs p r e t t y solidly implied that he does actually like her a lot outside of that too and maybe there is some comfort in having her around for this, but mostly heâs behind a smokescreen of lies through the whole thing sooo I doubt heâs even aware of it, honestly)   Â
but then it does matter that itâs her when she comes back for him, even after what he did. and unlike jean luc he understands what that means, that she did that for him, and that she didnât have to. and instead of asking her for more, in return he gives her the thing itâs been established is what he considers the most valuable thing he has; his âlast cardâ, the thing heâs credited with keeping him alive many a time, basically. itâs gone from using to mutuality, a tentative place of friendship, and at the end of the day he is a different man than his adoptive father, with a capacity for selflessness and love he lacks. which is of course some of the same stuff going on with rogue and mystique too, except rogue acted from a more fragile and unstable place and did something she regrets, or at least has a LOT of doubts about now, and she found some catharsis in helping someone make a different choice in a similar situation. man thereâs some Stuff going on under the surface here haha
(by the way itâs a weirdly... meaningless yet intensely meaningful thing, the gifting of a symbol? of an idea? but heâs putting something very crucial of himself into her hands, is the subtext, and he expects her to understand, which she also does seem to do. at the beginning of the episode heâs proving that heâs seen something true about her --Â âYouâre such an unhappy girlâ, knowing where she comes from, the way sheâs mourning her lost confidence and autonomy with her abilities -- and here sheâs proving sheâs seen something true about him. :â) I wish this show had gone on long enough for this dynamic to progress, itâs really interesting and touching)Â Â
- gambit dragging himself up onto dry land seeing someone approaching (to help?!): :D
gambit seeing that itâs logan and the look on his face: D:Â
- rogue using her powers so confidently and fearlessly in this episode tho!!!!Â
- *me crying* and then her FAMBILY comes to take her home and he says heâs looking out for her too and kurt still loves her even though theyâre having a conflict thing between them and sheâs finally able to use her powers without so much fear again and --
- ...did I just watch some baby lesbian love at first sight shit right now??? Â
- okay last two episodes letâs go
- HELL YEAH STORM (I love that sheâs like âdonât give me a dumb order like that and I wonât have to disobey itâ too sdfjsaj) her voice has such command Iâm usually very much not the âstep on meâ type butttt
- yâknow I feel like apocalypseâs main fault across all versions Iâve seen of him is that heâs like an immortal superpowered god king and heâs not even sexy. like at least make him hot if heâs going to be insufferable in every other wayÂ
- also callout post for apocalypse: one time he made gambit into the Horseman of Death... and didnât even make him sexy!!! you were handed remy lebeau, supreme bi disaster slut of the x men universe, and you couldnât even make his brainwashed superpowered evil side hot?? a beautiful stubbled twunk with glowing red eyes and extremely charming :> face practically delivers himself into your hands and you do that to him???? I mean Iâm sure apocalypse did some other bad stuff too but that was the worst one
(comics are so dumb yâall)Â
- having to watch jean cry is emotional terrorism!! ;___; she has such older sister/mom energy, whenever she gets sad and helpless it hurtsÂ
- oh, OH so PROFESSOR X youâll make into a hunk and ~*strategically*~ rip his clothes to show off a nipple and a flawless pec in a way that makes me extremely uncomfortable because heâs like The Dad??? apocalypse you are rotten to the core this is unforgivableÂ
- so wait wanda never actually gets her real memories back. what the FuCk I hope that was a dropped storyline because they ended the show tragically prematurely rather than like. the plan
- why is spyke calling storm âstormâ show thatâs his auntie o!! >:(
- as a society we need to acknowledge that apocalypse looks like a fucking clown
- ooooh yeah I have been thinking that this showâs greatest visual weakness so far has been not having a visual way to show telepathy/battles of the minds, but this is a pretty cool way to do it! better late than never
- Iâm so happy rogue gets to end this herself, since she was forced into starting it against her will, itâs just nice and neat storytelling
- YEAH FUCKING TELL HER KURT AND ROGUE I AM SO PROUD OF YOU and she has the temerity to look pissed off oh my god
the only valid thing mystique has done in her entire life is be in love with destiny. literally everything else she gets up to is a travesty. like I know objectively sheâs hot but my loathing for her stops me from even appreciating it. I do enjoy loathing her tho so please donât change her haha
(a bit odd to have kurtâs attitude to her swing so much but Iâm just going to assume he and rogue had a good long conversation after âcajun spiceâ and that he understands whatâs going on better now)
- this last part is such a cruel tease faskdfhsdaj âhere are all the cool-ass things we had planned. sucks you never get to see it huhâ im devastatedÂ
- magneto without his helmet and playing charmingly with children like charles is going âwell at least I saved my marriage finallyâ fsadkhfjsd (honestly tho I would be super interested in seeing how theyâd redeem this magneto because heâs been a real bitch the whole time lol)Â
thereâs an interesting thing here where magneto looks down at wanda as the last thing he does on screen before this epilogue part (yeah I hope it fucking haunts you forever what you did to her erik you absolute piece of hot garbage) and the last thing charles does is look at jean b/c he knows whatâs going to happen to her and it breaks his heart... Dramatic Parallells Â
- just the hint of jean as the phoenix has me in full D:D:D: mode tho maybe I wouldnât have survived it
- gambit in the last groupshot with his arm around rogue ;^) I mean Iâm sure theyâre headed for some turns and roundabouts along the way but whatâs that thing she says as her wedding vow, that sheâll always find her way back? anyway that got me in my heart
- man I really wish this show had been given more seasons, we were barely even getting warmed up here :â(
#x men evolution#x men#gambit#rogue x gambit#aaah this is like therapy for me... just dumping all my emotions into a tumblr post and then let them go into the ether#I am now wondering if I'm desperate enough to go all the way back to the x-men animated series (which I've never seen before!)#like am I willing to go there for more Contente. time will tell I suppose#happy tag#...this is very long#MAN why can't I channel this dumbass energy into fiction writing I'd get so much DONE

Letâs Talk:Â The Blooms at Ruyi Pavilion
I finished all 40 eps about two weeks ago, actually. I enjoyed it for the most part, the 1st half especially, but there were several things near the end that took me out.Â
But first some of the good bits...
The cast chemistry was immaculate. Our four main lead actors were a lot of fun together. Not just Zhang Zhehan and Ju Jing Yi, but also Wang You Shuo and Xu Jiaqi (Loved them!). The four of them have such obvious ease with each other after their previous work together in Legend of Yun Xi and it made scenes with any combination of the main four really pop.Â
I was especially drawn to the sistersâ relationship and the Prince-Vassal bond going on between Prince Su and Little Marquis. (Yâall know Iâm a sucker for both sibling stories and stories about fictional royals and their loyal vassals.)
Most of the ancillary characters were interesting, actually. As yâall know from my last post about this one, I was crack shipping like crazy all the side characters. đ This cast made it easy for me.
Except for Prince An. (Sorry to hit the bad so early.) Good god, I hated that man. His character was poorly drawn in pretty much every way, which is unfortunate cuz heâs the main antagonist. Any story with a main antagonist that just doesnât work is always gonna be weaker.
Also, no offense to people who like that actor but he was the only cast member who did absolutely nothing for me in terms of performance. So much of the story was focused on his weaksauce motivation and dry acting like, my god, put me out of my misery I do not care.
Anyway, the set design and costuming was top notch and I even enjoyed the broader story ideas the show was trying to put forth. The sitcom vibe of the first 20 eps or so was SOOO good. Our four mainsâ comedic timings were pitch perfect.Â
Unfortunately, the writing took a sharp nosedive in the back 3rd or so and it had a rough ending. (The lightning strike on the tower scene, the fight in the underground temple, the return of Prince Anâs mom...all of that was trash. letâs be real.)
I mostly blame this on three things: the missteps with the Prince An character, the lack of development of Rongâs prophetic dreams even though that was the main premise of the show, and the jump-the-shark moment that was the wedding night and its subsequently underwritten fallout.Â
Now to clarify, I donât mean to say the wedding night event shouldnât have happened at all but rather the execution of it within the story was poor and it negatively impacted 90% of the other character motivations/progressions and the overall pacing.Â
You know, it felt like that thing you do as a writer where you wake up and have a specific scene in your mind. Itâs evocative, impactful, fun, or otherwise intense. But you just have that scene and itâs something that would have to happen in the middle of your story. So you work your way backwards to try to get to that scene and you do your best to get the characters to make decisions to get there but when you sit down to write nothing works out. Itâs clunky or OOC for the scene to still happen so you end up having to either scrap the evocative scene or keep the clunky lead up and hope no one notices. Thatâs what that wedding scene and everything that happened after felt like. They wrote themselves into a corner and just struggled to recover until the bitter end.Â
The main pairing suffered the most because of the poor writing choices. No matter how much chemistry ZZH and JJY have together, even they could not completely salvage Rongâs yo-yoing behavior with Prince Su. They started off so wholesome and then dove into such toxicity and miscommunication for no reason.Â
Donât get me wrong. I can very easily enjoy angst. But Fu Rong consistently broke this man down. After ep 25-26, it stopped being good angst and became so awful to watch all the emotional manipulation and turmoil. Thereâs something broken in the writing if 9 out of 10 times Prince Su cried or fell into depression it was because of something Rong did or said to him after jumping to a conclusion with only part of the puzzle pieces gathered.Â
I could forgive some stuff because Prince An was manipulating things but some stuff was just all Rong not giving Prince Su the benefit of the doubt or plain old not doing her due diligence in investigating. She is supposed to have inherited the most prolific and successful spy organization in the show and she still got 90% of her conclusions wrong. It was like she was determined to always think the worst of Prince Su no matter what despite how often he went above and beyond to help her. Despite the fact that he literally had a reputation as a general for being a harsh taskmaster but fair and just.Â
I think what broke me was when she did the bare minimum investigation into her own fatherâs death and just fully blamed Prince Su without confronting him honestly or even considering his personality or their relationship up until that point. She really believed a single street sellerâs entire testimony over the man she lived with and supposedly loved for months. Girl...
And this is after sheâd previously mistakenly accused him of killing her mentor with very few facts to the point where she stabbed him on their wedding night.
There came a point where I actually wanted Prince Su to finally, truly divorce Rong and settle down with someone who could love him right. Maybe give him time to heal from the repeated heartbreaks, betrayals, and the literal stab wound in his chest but he was so fucking in love with Rong, he just couldnât escape.
(If there were behind the scenes production reasons for the clunky-ness of the back half, I would not be surprised at all but ultimately they donât matter cuz the story we got was the story we got.)
Imagine if we had gotten a Rong who used her prophetic dreams to navigate the cut throat world of royal politics. Or imagine if weâd gotten Rong as a true apprentice to Ruyi who learned both metalsmithing and spycraft in the first half and took over the pavilion as a competent leader in the second half. As it stands, it just felt like wasted potential.
Iâm glad they had the modern day special AU eps tho cuz those were great. Zhang Zhehan and Ju Jing Yi had the opportunity to really showcase their incredible chemistry but in a modern setting and with better writing than the back 3rd of BRYP.
Now letâs talk Zhang Zhehan since he was the reason I started this in the first place. I loved him in this. I truly did. He was stern and serious but also playful and sweet. He was romantic but awkward, badass but vulnerable. He really delivered a nuanced and charming performance. I loved every second.
I think my favorite moment wasnât some badass fight or even a super romantic moment. No, it was when he got drunk and started crying like a little baby cuz Rong was constantly doubting him no matter what he did. It was simultaneously sad and hilarious. Like gut busting funny. Yâall can watch it here:
youtube
I laughed so fucking hard at this. Oh my god, guys! This shit was too much.
Random Thoughts:
The romance between the 2nd leads was A+. Truly an adorable affair. Though I think they shouldâve gotten together officially earlier around ep 25 or so and we shouldâve seen the rest with them as a couple.
The costuming was so good yâall. For all the main four characters but I was especially drawn to Prince Suâs outfits.
The ghostly pale look with the bright red lips and eyeshadow makeup for Rong did not bother me at all. I actually liked it for her though I think it wouldâve worked better if sheâd had more explicit prophetic abilities.
I couldâve used more actual war scenes with Prince Su and Little Marquis.
The OST for the show SLAPPED!
That one kid spy in Ruyi Pavilion was voiced by the same actor as Chengling from WOH and I have never double-taked harder. lmao
Even though there were things I didnât like in this show, I appreciated how gay I could make it in my last post. Truly it was a bisexualâs dream aesthetically.

I'm, upset right now. I really like Doctor Who. But, I think I'll be giving it a pass until Chibnail leaves and we get someone actually competent back.
Was Moffat at all controversial like Chibnail?
(Made with speech to text forgive typos)
Oh god Moffat is even worse >:[ blatantly racist, misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic, oh my god. And there are so many rape and pedophilia jokes that it's not even fucking funny. He turns the Doctor into a fucking pedophile. He goes out of his way so that the doctor meets his companions when they are little girls so that they fall in love with him. Literally. I can't think of a single female character that Moffat introduced that did not meet the doctor when she was like 10 or something and fall madly in love with him. He started doing this shit in the girl in the fireplace when the 10th doctor was still around, and then he did it like 5 more fucking times. It's just fucking disgusting. He's constantly also making dick jokes despite this supposed to be a family-friendly show, and has the doctor sexual assault people and has a companions sexually assault the Doctor and it's all treated like it's funny and a joke.
Steven Moffat is like... Think of literally all of the horrible things that a person can say and do and that is what Steven Moffat does. He is a fucking blatant misogynist and homophobic and racist and transphobic. Everything you can think of that someone can do wrong he has done wrong.
As a single example of the homophobia, there are two gay characters. They don't have names. Because, and I quote from memory, "he's the fat one I'm the short one, we're gay, why do we need names?"
He literally had the gay characters themselves say that they don't need names because they're gay and one of them is fat and the other is short and they're the summation of their personalities. And they only exist for a single fucking episode for this oh so funny scene.
And even more than the bigotry, Steven Moffay is an absolutely horrible writer who can't tie a plot together to save his life. He actively builds up and makes you think that that's something important is going to happen and then just fucking drops it and makes fun of you for expecting a payoff. Key is you've heard of the unreliable narrator, now get ready for the untrustworthy writer. He doesn't know anything that he is doing. He thinks that a plot twist is lying to your audience and pulling something in that makes no sense and had zero foreshadowing and is literally coming out of nowhere. He thinks that having stories that make no sense is the same thing as being clever and that if you don't understand the story, because the story makes no fucking sense, that means you're stupid and just not smart enough to appreciate his talent.
He actively mocks and belittles his audience for actually giving a crap about the writing. He is the one that wrote Sherlock the BBC Sherlock, and during the Hiatus between I don't remember what it was season 2 and 3? Everyone was coming up with theories for how Sherlock survived falling off of a fucking building. We were all expecting season 3 to explain it to us because you know, it was kind of a big fucking deal and kind of a requirement for the story. He decided not to tell anybody and not to explain it.
He was literally too fucking lazy to come up with an actual solution to the problem that he fucking created, and not only that, he literally spent half the episode literally mocking The Audience by portraying fans in the universe see rising and talking about it and making fun of them. He literally hired people to play the role of the audience so that he can make fun of them and say look how stupid they are they think there's an actual solution to this problem look how much they care about this they're so stupid. I am not even joking. He literally spent half the episode making fun of his audience for daring to give a shit about the story he is telling.
I'm not even joking. I wish it were a joke. How the fuck do you see people being excited and invested in your story and being passionate about it and make fun of them for it????
Steven Moffat is literally the reason I stopped watching Doctor Who.
When chibnall took over I thought I would be able to start watching it again, and was unfortunately proven very fucking wrong.
Chibnall is also not a good writer, but from what I've seen before I gave up he's not even remotely as bad of a writer sad Moffat. Chibnall at least sort of kind of seems to be able to carry a plot even if it's going in a stupid Direction, Moffat's stories are so filled with plot holes and inconsistencies it's ridiculous.
Steven Moffat is a raging bigot, and I do not recommend anyone ever subject themselves to his writing. He is a misogynist, he is racist, he is homophobic and transphobic, and he likes to portray pedophilia as romantic and constantly has the Doctor running around making dick jokes and leering at people and sexualizing the companions.
If you trust my opinion on media, I always stop watching Doctor Who the moment 10 dies. It's all downhill from there.
There is classic Who to consider, if you can find it, and there are also Doctor Who audio books and audio dramas, and I can personally recommend the 8th doctor's Adventures With Charley Pollard, which I freaking adore, aaand @walks-the-ages is the one who got them so she can explain how to get the audios.
But yeah. If you hate Chibnall, you will loathe Moffatt.

Okay so. I watched Q-force. And I have no idea what I think about it.
Imma just be rambling so I'll break down the characters and my likes/dislikes about them before giving my plot breakdown at the end. Only the main/prominent ones because I don't have time.
Steve Maryweather-Easily the best character out of them, with Deb being a close second. He could've very easily fallen into the trope of being someone who was incompetent but expected the world anyway, but he doesn't. He graduated top of his class, and despite his quirks is a genuinely competent team leader, and wants the best for his team. He wants to prove that he and his team are competent enough to get recognition, and has a genuine faith in the people around him. It was refreshing to see him hold his team in a genuine high regard, where a lot of times it's like "We're shit but lets do this thing now" He's a genuinely well-rounded character, and (and forgive me if this isn't the best way to frame this) it feels like being gay is an important part of his character, without encompassing the whole thing. I thought Benji and his relationship was super cute and I was sad when they broke up. I was afraid he was going to be, like a second but worse Twink with the stereotyping but gladly fell away from that.
Deb-I thought her and her wife were super cute (though I hate how the wife is designed ngl adjafkldajfd). I liked Debs character, but I feel like she had a lot of racial stereotyping that wouldn't be inherently obvious unless you were looking for them, her being the strong one, and also the "mama" type at the same time. No one treated her with disrespect, and her lesbianism seemed to be more authentic but I feel like there wasn't a lot of thought put into what these tropes were and why they were bad. Her being black and making her the mama type, as well as the big strong type could be read as tasteless. Again, I really liked her character but these were some things I noticed while watching.
Twink- You know, I didn't really like him at first, I thought he was the epitome of all the bad stereotyping (though I'm just glad him and Mary didn't get put into the same category). His humor isn't my taste, and it just kinda seemed like someone for half of his lines went "what twitter stan language can we put in here?" And sometimes it was a bit too random for my tastes. However! I do like that his drag was considered important and was an integral part to a lot of missions they went on, and not just "Ah look at that dumb gay trying to find reasons to dress in drag." His talents and expertise were both respected and, save for Buck (which his whole point was supposed to be offensive anyway) no one undermined Twink for his femininity. His back story is also kinda random but did play a role in the missions as well. Still, personally think he's the worst character. Plus, he's French so minus four-twenties amount of points.
Stat-You know, in a show where everyone was stating what letter they were every few seconds I was surprised that I had to look up that Stat was trans. I...liked her character for the most part, except the part where she was fucking a robot. Kinda weird ngl, outta left field, and with her being trans I wonder if her having that sort of relationship is problematic for her. Love her design tho, love me a hacker girl. She's also listed as "ambiguously gay" tho showed to have mostly girl love interests but, okay.
Buck-He's the straight guy, emotionally repressed haha and he's bigoted. Did think it was funny later on when he was more "accepting" but managed to be even more infuriating about it. Tied with Twink as worse character but you know they tried to do stuff with him.
Vee-Really liked me a boss lady, but kinda weird how they bait-and-switched us with her actually being a lesbian, then go "no she's straight tho" in regards to Karen. I thought her and Mary's relationship was cute, wish I saw more of it. But she did feel like a random plot device in later seasons, what with her disappearing and reappearing when it was plot relevant. (Tho she HOTOHOTHOTHOT bikini episode WOOOWEEEE)
....
Okay, so now the plot....which. it had one?
It felt like it was flip flopping back n forth about whether it wanted to take itself seriously or not, and it seemed to decide on serious more towards the end, but then it would have this random plot element that would be so out of left field it would pull me out of my suspension of disbelief. See the whole "Back cracking to unlock memories" plot point. This back and forth on whether it would be a comedy or not I think weakened both categories it tried to play into.
If I had to compare the show to anything it would probably be Futurama, but the thing with Futurma is, its set in the future, so you're suspension of disbelief is allowed to stretch a bit more because all the wacky quirky stuff can be attributed to future shenanigans. Q-force, to my knowledge, is set in the modern day, which makes the wacky stuff that much wacker, because it's set in our modern times, which you apply the rules of everyday life to.
A lot of the problems that I had with Q-Force is, in the attempt to write specifically about the "gay experience" revealed that the writers have really only had a very specific experience of interacting with gay ppl, what I call the "Urban Gay" experience.
The fact they're in West Hollywood, and all the things that were listed as "universal gay experiences" but were only things that you'd be exposed to if you were in the city. I think a flavor of "white gay" can be implemented here too, which Q force has exactly one black woman, who manages to be the only lesbian.
That coupled with the fact that, there's a difference between having Twink naturally being a drag queen, the whole team being gay to some degree, and the fact they interact with the gay community often without Drawing Attention to all of those things and self-congratulating itself on concluding it. Funnily enough, Q-Force had examples of doing this right and doing this right. Right way: In the second or third episode where Mary found that guy with the flash drive to the uranium in it and seduced him in the gay bar. Relevant that it was gay without overtly drawing attention to it. Wrong-Way: Having Pride go on while Girl Boss was trying to take over the world.
And, for the show that promoted itself as representing the gay experience, there were...two gay men, one lesbian, one trans person, one straight guy and...no bisexual people. Also no nonbinary people. Like of course it's unrealistic to include every single identity but you're one bisexual person who appeared for one episode and was promptly blown up. And also showed to be...more off than the other characters, what with the stealing of silverware and all. Just, bisexual people are already forgotten enough as it is and not including them in the show, but you include two gay men just kinda reads as tasteless to me (as a bisexual person, obviously).
Which makes it so weird that Stat was left "ambiguously gay" when she could've easily been bisexual (which still would be problematic because of the robot-fucking but at least you got the B in there somewhere in the main group)
Overall, it tried to market itself as the "be all end all" of what it was like to be gay, but ended up excluding the exact people that get excluded in real-life lgbt spaces. This combined with the indecision with what kind of show it wanted to be managed to make it fall short. If you arent the very specific type of gay person who lives in a city environment and doesn't fit the stereotypes showed you're not going to feel "seen" by the show.
Weirdly though, I didn't hate watching it, and I would probably watch another season if they managed to make one. The parts that did work, I think worked really well, and even the bad parts just read as tasteless, and not actively terrible. If they focused less on making "hey I'm gay" jokes every three seconds and just let each character be what they are I think the show would be stronger for it. And I think they'd find less problems overall if they did that too. In the mean time I'll just be here side-eyeing the whole thing.
Edit: I forgot to mention, and this is a problem a lot of adult TV shows fall into, that because they got the clear to show nudity/sex they felt like they *had* to show nudity and to a lesser extent sex every episode. So just that whole "Haha adult=sex obviously."
Oh! And this generally goes for the whole "shove it in your face" part, but a lot of the characters who are bigoted were shown to be. Very blatantly so. And not to say there isn't blatantly bigoted ppl of course they are but I don't think that's where you see a lot of bigotry nowadays. This was sort of touched on during the show but more of a jokey manner, but I think it would've been more realistic if we had more "girl with a gay best friend" kinda bigotry as opposed to the "I'm literally hurling slurs at you" bigotry, especially since they're in Cali.
#like its a C+ I think#q-force#criticism#like there's a lot wrong with it but I thought it was kinda charming overall#like. you could have all those things that gays like in these characters but to every three seconds go#'i like this thing because I'm a lesbian'#just kinda got old after a while#juicy takes

Airplane gets Ghosted~
Brain: :D
Me: Oh no, what did you do.
Brain: Letâs make another Airplane Harem~
Me. 𼺠why are you like this?!
Note: Inspired by A Crowd of Evil Spirits Lines Up to Confess to Me; pretty funny horror unlimited flow story, with some good scares that leave ya at the edge of your seat. (I really love the Protagonist, so good and pure and I headcannon as Aro-Ace~)Â So anyways, for those who donât know, in the novel, the Protagonist Gu Wuji is a genuinely good person, an aspiring actor on hard times who suddenly gets pulled into this horror survival game. Here is the thing; while for others this is a truly cursed and terrible thing, for the protag this is just a regular day, just with some people who need some help; he will help Ghosts just as much as he would help a human.
Ghost: *being Scary*
Gu Wuji: Oh no, let me help you? *smiles*
Ghost: *either a blushing mess, happy to be helped, or can feel how strong this human is and is the one scared instead*
So yeah, here this man goes, bewitching everyone he meets, especially terrifying Ghosts who want him to die so they can stay together forever đ Lucky he is so charming, and that with every Instance cleared, he can get points to get items and information/hints from the store.
And then I though about Airplane being in this position and I just grinned.
So, to preface this, Iâm going to go on how I think Airplane has been raised in this AU.
Basically, since our favorite writer was young, Airplane was pretty much raised by ghosts. With two increasingly furious and arguing parents who couldnât care less about him, they donât notice at all how weird their kid is, not wanting to be reminded of old memories. So thus startâs Airplaneâs growing up more comfortable with the headless car-crash victim who helps him know when his bullies are around then actual living people who only seem to try and tear each other apart more then most dead ever want to. Not to say he hasnât met some mean dead too, but all they seem to care about is just scaring him off so they can be alone. Which, fair.
Just... Airplane is still Airplane, but for him, normal is dealing with the Ghostly Neighbor who will at least hear him out most of the time, especially since most Living people are assholes.
(Also, Airplane will have some of the strength that Gu Wuji is known for, but he mostly just has a really good head for intelligence, logistics, plots, and strategy... Letâs just say Airplane has seen and been through some shit in his younger years.)Â
I am also being a gremlin and making Shen Jiu and Yue Qi be the friends Airplane makes in middle school, Shen Jiu being superstitious as fuck and Yue Qi going along with it, even as he because more WTF the longer they are friends with Airplane and fully realize âShit, ghost are fucking real, nope, nope, nope.â It is a beautiful, disaster of a trio and their friendship is eternal... (even if Shen Jiu will never forgive/hold over Yue Qi for leaving him with the ghost in the fucking burned down Mansion, even if Airplane fixed it; apparently it had something to do with their previous incarnations?)
So yeah, these guys are released out into the world, where Airplane writes really good, if bloody dramas, asking his Ghost Friends if he can use some of their stories and them either not caring or excited as they give him the go ahead. (The Police have some questions...)
Sure, he writes some bad porn on the side, but with some of his Ghost friends able to beta read for him, Airplane is able to stay a float nice and easy, if still anxious every time he has to pay the rent because human interaction is so hard when youâre dealing with the living. (Donât have to worry about meeting someoneâs eyes if theyâre gouged out after all)
And then we get to the Instances :) (Now, besides the first one that does happen First, these others could happen with one or two between them.)
First Instance(Novice): The Traitorâs Secret~
The fresh new Players, with some older ones here, is part of a Merchant Caravan that they just have to ensure gets from point A to point B, and just live. Simple mission as this is a Novice Instance for innocents pulled in. And it would have even remained a simple one, only having to deal with the wondering dead that are manageable, as they have plenty of supplies to ration and work with, if one of the Older Players wasnât here with ulterior motives.
See, this âSeniorâ managed to buy information that there is a great item that can be obtained; the thing is, one must betray their comrades in order to get it, with the first betrayal making the difficulty rise from the Novice to Intermediate immediately, as this as awakened a terrible Boss.
It probably would have gone smoothly (maybe....) but here is the thing.
As it turns out, âSeniorâ didnât buy enough information; after The First Betrayal, the Boss Ghost will sneakily become a part of the Party, acting much like a helpful NPC when really he is a trap; if the Betrayer betrays him, it is game over.
But the game is different this time; No one expects Airplane, who has the ability and instincts of a cockroach who was completely willing to hug a Ghostâs (well, NPCâs) thighs
Cue Shang Qinghua who is very confused, because after he sneakily becomes part of the group, this human has decided to cling to him of all people, the Creepy/Grumpy NPC, and not his fellow group members...Â
Airplane grows on SQH like a fugus, makes amazingly funny commentary, and even tells some interesting stories. On Airplaneâs part, Shang Qinghua feels not only like the strongest guy here, but also the most reliably competent...
Not to mention he feels comfortable to be around, which is weird since Airplane doesnât usually feel to comfortable with the living~ (ha ha ha, maybe because heâs a NPC? Though he still freezes with those guys too...)Â
As it is, because âSeniorâ needs to betray everyone, he tries to get Airplane, who, again, is still a very, very morally ambiguous guy, sees this guy trying to kill him, and simply pushes them instead into a throng of the undead.
Airplane: Ah, sorry for the terrible sight Senior brother, but he was trying to kill us? Are you alright? Do you want a massage?
Shang Qinghua is incredulous, but becomes more charmed as time passes.
(Remembers, how his martial brothers, people who he had lived and worked beside all his life, so easily sold him out, trying to kill him only for him to suffer a fate worse then death. It was only so much time was passed, after having to spy and betray those who betrayed him before he finally had the release of death; but even then, his resentment was too strong, even the blood sealed onto his jade hairpin filled with resentment.)
It is this item he gives to Airplane, blushing as he does as he says if the other ever needs help, to just use the pin and it wonât lead him wrong.
When Airplane leaves the instance, he gets a system notice about the points he got, increased because of the Instanceâs sudden level increase, as well as information on the item he received from Shang QinghuaÂ
Shang Qinghuaâ Hairpin: A Hairpin with deadly secrets, belong to A Spy with a vast network of information, be able to uncover hidden secrets with ease and learn anything you wish of with loyal shades at your command,
Level One: Summon two shades to gather information. (Each level up gets you another shade to do your bidding)
(He only has the information from level one, but once he levels it up, this is what else it can do)
Level 3: Your shades can now help you escape dicey situations
Level 5: Able to uncover the deadly poison hidden in the hollow of it, this deadly substance can poison Living and Dead both
Level: 7: Able to use the Hairpin like a deadly knife, the resentment enriching the wood to be harder and sharper then ever before.
(Past Level Seven, must full on stab someone in a vital place to discover this ability: Able to release one ensured fatal attack from the Hairpin; after that, it will continue to drop to a fifty-fity chance and before renewing each Instance.)
Level 10: be able to summon Shang Qinghua, the deadly competent Spy to your side to aid you; note, he will only help as much as he likes you and you are only truly safe from him for an Hour before he gets free range to do whatever he wants.
So yeah. this is Airplaneâs first instance~ It was so terrifying, having to be around so many people and freaky monsters, but he thinks he made a friend? He hopes?
(He certainly gets one heck of an admirer.)(ÂŹâżÂŹ)
Second Instance(Novice): The Healerâs Broken Heart
So, next Instance, Airplane finds himself in an ancient, fantasy hospital with a group half novices and novices who at least survived two or three games after this. The challenge this time is two pair up into teams of two or threes and try and treat as many âpatientsâ in the hospital as one can. First, they have to collect all the medicine they need, prepare the Nursing rooms, and then, of course, treat at least five patients each, or face death for failing.Â
See, the patients are sorta, kinda, Undead they need to treat as if they were living, so they Have to do things like bandaging sliced throats, sew back on sliced limbs, and drain puss and other gross gory things to give nightmares. Not to mention that they have to follow regular rules like in most hospitals, so no running in the hall, no loud sounds, things like that when their are Ghosts everywhere. (As long as someone doesnât break the rules, the Ghosts wonât notice you.)
As Airplane is a nervous wreck around people, and with this being a bad day for his anxiety, no one but one guy is willing to partner up with him, this gentle, sweet guy called Mu Fan, whoâs amazing chill affects Airplaneâs own chill and helps him feel a little better about the situation.
Ha~ Mu Fan is so nice and even knows so much about all the medicines and what to do here! Heâs even helpful and nice when Airplane was about to have an anxiety attack, following what Airplane warned him about not touching him, but if he could, maybe hum if he could?
Of course Airplane canât just let the other carry him the entire way! Mu Fan is just too nice and really helped him back there, so he wants to pay back at least a little. So, being this disaster that he is, instead of thanking Mu Fan and asking him if their is anyways to pay him back, Airplane uses his Hairpin instead to see if he could help the other out.
He gets an... interesting reaction...
Apparently, Mu Fan is actually Mu Qingfang, a Boss Ghost (tho Airplane only knows the other is a ghost) of this area, who can be activated in some ways; examples, if the Players try and hurt the Patients, if Players try and kill each other in cold blood, or try and steal Medicine. Mu Qingfangâs most sincere wish is to free his patients from this cycle of pain, hopefully be free from it for good.
This is the information that Airplane gets, what Mu Qingfang has been trying to discover for years with no luck.
Airplane: QAQ Mu Qingfang is truly too good, too pure for this world, wanting to help the other ghost past on and be out of pain.
On Mu Qingfangâs part, he saw this poor, distressed man and the doctor instincts in him went on fire as he did his best to help the other with their heart demons. But he was really, extremely impressed by them with how they treated his patients, taking care of their wounds like it was nothing, joking with the decapitated head as he sewed it back on, getting a breathless laugh from the woman as she cried happy tears from it. The doctor went really gooey though with how Airplane spellbound his audience of twins who needed to be separated after their parent had sown them together, the two young (very creepy as fuck) children begging for more, distracting from the pain of having to reattach their arms in the right places one more.
(Tries not to cry when this disaster of a Man says he has to do something first before he leaves after he finishes the five patients, only to bring a true gift back as he does. Mu Qingfang has nearly given up on his poor patients ever being free from this constant cycle of pain, their Bandit Killers, for such a small, evil group, never brought to justice only for Airplane to catch them all, bringing them to the hospital so that all their grievances can be aired out and payed back once and for all. It took a bit, and Airplane accidently raised the Level of the Instance himself this time doing it, but he got all the baddies round up and incapacitated as he did.)
Mu Qingfang is ever so grateful, even as Airplane offers to help the man finish up here before he leaves, the last doctorâs visit these ghost will ever need to have. He blesses Airplane with a powerful healing ability, along with a Doctorâs kit that is full of useful supplies, refilling ever day if needed.)
So, Airplane is back in his space, cleaning his hands and body because that was still gross (but not the worse thing he has dealt with) with new points and some good prizes once more, even if he isnât sure why the level went up all of a sudden? The Bandits honestly werenât that hard to trick and sabotage?
Mu Qingfangâs Medical Bag
Basically, like the Hairpin, full of goodies that can do more and more OP things the higher the Level it goes (and yes, has a secret poison function as well; Now Shang Qinghua can refill the Hairpin if he ever need to :D And yes, Mu Qingfang can be summoned with an Item in the bag once he gets to Level Ten..
Same with the Healing ability, it just gets more OP the higher the level, tho it doesnât have a summoning ability, but will let you heal others as much as you want at Level Ten
So thus, this is Airplaneâs second Ghost âFriendâ~ (ă ̄︜ ̄)äşş( ̄︜ ̄ă)
Instance Three (Intermediate): Guards of The Icy Village
So, Airplane is confident in himself, seeing as heâs managed Instances that go from Novice to Intermediate all the time, thinks âwhy not try an Intermediate, since my Novice experience will probably turn out like that anyways? (the fact that all the choices he has left are either Intermediate or Hard does not matter!)Â
Looking through his choices, he see a Limited Event One, with a Special Link to it; not knowing what this means but being effected by the Limited deal, he picks it.
(What this means is that there will be an Event in this Instance that will literally only be open this one time and can not be done ever again; Special Link Means that this Event will and can effect in even Higher Level Instances in the Future, depending on how Many +âs are in the title of it.)
This Event has a Max Number of +âs :)
So, he picks his choice and finds himself in this beautiful Icy wonderland with a group of other people. Everyone has to be set into teams here, guarding the snow village from evil spirits and monsters that would prey on it for five days and five nights. And because I want to, Airplane has been teamed up with Gongyi Xiao, Qin Wanrong, Qin Wanyue, and Qiu Haitang. As long as they protect their part of the Village, they will be able to pass the Instance and everything will be swell
(Is this me indulging in having some badass girls, and letting these characters not only get some damn scene time, but be able to be happy and live? Yes, yes it is, because let me explore these guys in this traumatic AU where they have to do all they can to live, and still be able to trust to have each otherâs backs dang it)Â
So, the Huan Hua High Schooler group have already been through two instances at this point, Airplane has been through a lot, and Qiu Haitang has had one game that turned from easy to hard in a minute that she survived with luck and her wits (and gave her a crap ton of points and a need for survival classes she took asap before her next game). Airplane, because he doesnât trust the fact that theyâll be okay if other parts of the Village theyâre in are invaded, sends his spirits and some nifty golems he got from the shop to help patrol everywhere.Â
Because come on, if one place gets breached, of course the rest will be vulnerable! Heâs played the Empire Building, Fortress Making games to prove it!
(Everyone nods, because this actually makes so much sense, how could they have ignored such an obvious trap! Intermediate Instances are no joke!)
Cue really scary as fuck ice monsters and evil spirits. Things are going good, Airplane and co are making it through, with Airplane discovering and making obsolete yet another trap unknowingly because heâs making sure everything is rationed(and using some points to actually buy some fooof) and checking in with villagers all over; because they are literally in charge of protecting and managing all these people, and with everything around here with the blizzard and seize, they have to make sure there is enough food and supplies for everyone.Â
(That this prevents making evil spirits and monster from rising with the Village is a big thing actually, because some of them are made from the dead.)
So then, the forth day comes; it starts out nice, no more harsh snows, people are coming out of their houses now, Airplane is nearly tearing his hair out from stress and too many people, but he can make do. (has had to make do with worse really)
And then he hears some of the Villagers are about to riot, planning to go at something with stones and pitchforks. Panicking, thinking these NPCs that he has to protect are trying to go outside their weight class, Airplane gets the others in his team and other teams who are useful to hopefully get the weak peasant class NPC out of danger as he goes about handling the problem himself, only to stop and start at the literal child bleeding in from of him.
For a moment, Airplane blanks... (Sure, he knows, from experience, that Children Ghosts are in fact some of the most, if not the most deadly ghost out there... And yet... for all the pranks and cruelty they played, they were always the ones who understood Airplaneâs loneliness the most, being the most truthful and blunt and just honest with him...)
So, when Airplane sees this light blue demon child with horns and nasty claws, tear stains on his still baby fat cheeks even as they scowl and bare fangs, fear and anger in their eyes as they tremble before him, Airplane does not kill the child or run them out of the village.
It takes some coaxing, and itâs mostly hunger on the childâs part that wins in the end, but with the last of Airplaneâs Jerky being torn through, he is able to treat the kid with his kit in his tent, even get them some cold soup to eat before they sleep.
Airplane has enough time to possibly panic over the fact âWait, if there is a child there must be a parentâ before said Childâs Father appears in the Village the next morning, KOâing two teams before almost killing his own before Airplane shakily presents them their well treated and contented child...Â
who doesnât let go, until their parent raises an eyebrow, makes an amused huff, and easily grabs their child, even if it leaves Airplane with some nasty scratches and one less lucky charm necklace.
(The Future Mobei-Jun, still Mo Bolin, nearly cries, but stubbornly bites his lip as he does, glaring at anything and everyone around him, especially his parent and the warm person he has to leave here. He wants to keep them! They saved him when their was no gain for it, and even used much needed supplies to treat him, which Mo Bolin knows are important and guarded fiercely! They told interesting stories and had good food! He doesnât want to leave them.)
Mo Bolinâs Father is very amused, and gives Shang Qinghua an ice power(shield) and a Teleporting Token.
So, when Shang Qinghua gets back from this instance, he gets some friend requests, a bunch of points for the best possible ending ever achieved in a game, and info about his new things.
heâll only be able to make Shields and Barriers with his new Ice Ability, with the strength and number he can make increasing with each level.
With the Token, it allows him to teleport a limited range and places he either sees or has been. It canât be leveled, but apparently, if he fulfills some sort of condition, it can be upgraded.
So, those are ideas I have for some of the Instances. Things not mentioned:
Time with the Instances is weird; Time still always moves forward, but it can easily skip around... So the next time Airplane accidently gets into a high Nightmare Grade Instance, He might see a fully grown Mo Bolin, now Mobei-Jun~Â
Another example of Time being weird with the Instances; Airplane obviously met Shang Qinghua first, but Shang Qinghua had been Betrayed and sold out to Mobei-Jun, the same Mobei-Jun that Airplane saved as a child :D
(Yes, Airplane will summon Shang Qinghua in an Instance with Mobei-Jun, and it will be gloriously awkward, even as Shang Qinghua is smug, because he can still see Airplane anytime the other wishes to summon him)
(This will probably lead to Mobei-Jun upgrading Airplaneâs Token, making it to where itâs range is even greater now, and can summon him if Airplane wishes it.)
I am still on the fence of making Shen Yuan either a Ghost and part of the Harem, or a player who is bros with Airplane.
There is an Instance in their Real Life, where Qiu Haitang, Shen Jiu, Yue Qi, along with Airplane go along one hell of a Blast from the Past as they find out terrible secrets, things get resolved, there is much crying to be had, and everyone agrees to never mention the Instance ever again or so help them Shen Jiu will make them forget.
(Shen Jiu likes having a sister. Qiu Haitang likes having a brother she actually likes.)
Liu Qingge is a disaster; is he a player, is he a Ghost, is he a monster? Who knows, Airplane doesnât. (Iâm going to say he is a fellow player~ he just likes messing with Airplane.)
And thus, here is this AU~ Hope you guys like it~ EDIT: Noticed this was weird to read, so I added spaces: hope this helps.

Iâm suuuure heâs shocked /s
GRRM:Â âOh woes! I have created a perfect and supporting family for my main characters and I need conflict to make it interesting! What could possibly ruin a good family?â
GRRM:Â âAh! A girly girl, of course!â *Creates Sansa.*Â âAnd a traitorous bitch at that who would chose to support and protect her child over her birth family who do not rely on her for protection! Surely all shall realize what a bad person she is! Itâs not like her own mother would be condemned for abandoning a child thatâs not even her own!â *Creates first outline.*Â âBut wait! She shall be prepubescent at the start of the story...â *Starts creating the actual story.*Â âI shall introduce her through the resentful tomboyâs perspective! And I shall have grown men slobbering over this prepubescent girly girl because we all know thatâs ~*historically accurate*~! Oh, people do not like her? I am shocked! Shocked!â
Like, it says a lot about a narrative that when the author wants to create conflict and shake up a healthy family dynamic in a supremely patriarchal world, that he introduces a prepubescent, feminine sister who is unfavored by her father compared to her tomboy sister (even Sansaâs betrothal is a sham even if it would have made her future queen-in-waiting. If everything went as Ned planned, her virtue would have been ruined on the Trident and after he breaks the betrothal with Joff by accusing him of being a bastard, Sansaâs play-acting at love and having been alone with Joff would have ruined her for good, future prospects and the best she would get is either a disinherited second son who no one else wants to marry or a jumped up house who wants some blue blood like the Freys, Baelishes or Westerlings-Spicers that no one important likes.
Arya, by being younger, and more like Lyanna, would have gotten the queenhood and crown prince by Robertâs second wife after Cersei is disposed of, since Robert really wants to marry his child to Nedâs children, so no one better tell me that Ned ever put Sansa ahead of Arya the same he puts Arya ahead of Sansa. He freaking hides behind his prepubescent daughterâs skirts while investigating what he believes are ruthless murderers who had no qualms killing the most powerful men in the realm in a hyper-patriarchy! And it is the other daughter he warns about dangers and gives lessons in fighting! Like what was Ned thinking would happen with Sansa? Did he even care? Did he think he could just sweep it under rugs and forget it? She will need to marry within recent memory of her scandalous conduct since sheâll be twenty in less than a decade! And marriageable age in Westeros is 16! And yet the fandom goes âPoor Ned to have that traitorous bitch for a daughter~â âShe should have listened to Ned who never spoke to her and explained himself or the world wouldnât be ending~â âI donât hate Sansa but she was sooo stupid for not blindly obeying her loving father who punishes her for her sisterâs sins and never explains himself~â is it any wonder my patience with Ned Starkâs parental fuck ups ran out? Congrats, fandom, you made me hate him by excusing his fuck ups and blaming them on his daughter all the time!).
GRRM tries to make it gray, but he knows full well what kind of audience he writes to when he writes the relationships between Cat and Jon, and Arya and Sansa and should have compensated.
Hell, he should have made Joff a good person, prince and promising future king that most girls would like to marry, only to show thatâs not what Ned cares about (after all, unless Ned wants Sansa to be abused like half the fandom, he had no idea that Joff was bad when he betrothed them), he cares about birth and truth and âHigh As Honorâ over practical things like âWinter is Coming and Staying for Ten Freezing Years and Does Not Care Who Sits On the Throne So Lets Not Start a Civil War with One of the Most Powerful Families in the Realm, hm?â.
I mean, no one likes Drizzt DoâUrdenâs sisters/mother/the matriarchy as a whole, do they? The Dark Elf Trilogy predates ASoIaF by six years, and should have shown a competent writer exactly what the state of womanhood in the Fantasy genre was like. And if youâre going âwell, the matriarchy is evil!â I would like to point out that people hate Cattie-brie who is not part of that matriarchy. Yeah. Thereâs a reason why Menzoberranzan could be written that way and published and become popular, and it was not that Fantasy readers love and support and makes the effort to identify with and understand female characters (nor does most authors, come to think of it... see female friendships in ASoIaF that are without any sexual, incest, or abusive~ Like Arianne and Tyene being as close as sisters in the Later Books Which Are Not Early Installment Weirdness... Oh wait...).
Heck, in the Belgariad, another series predating both of them, things were more subtle but hardly better for female characters; Polgara is a mother figure who gets to have a moment of being imperfect, but to anyone reading the story, it is clear that Garion is the true victim in the circumstances and conspiracies Polgaraâs family has woven around him, and that his anger is the immediate reaction of finding out the truth (he just found out how/why he was orphaned and now has the world on his shoulders! And the characters bag on him for not being understanding of the 1000s of years old woman who lied to him and now is sulking. It is blatantly obvious to the readers that it is not the male character in the wrong). The less said about Ce´Nedra (half hyper-sexual dryad, spoiled princess who wants bigger breasts, et cetera) the better. Heck, the less said about the lovable oaf of the hero group committing marital rape on his estranged wife to cure her of being a bitch and turn her loving the better.
The Narnia books predates even that, and Sansaâs direct parallel is Susan, and, yeah... âA silly and vain young womanâ with âPlenty of time to mendâ sounds very familiar when you hear how people blame Sansa and wants to force her into abusive marriages with repulsive men to mend her.
Not to mention that in Lord of the Rings and related works women are either paragons of virtue, evil, unnamed or are chastised for being ambitious, with a few, notable exceptions allowed to make âwrongâ choices, and, well, just see the Elwing discourse in fandom and how her murderers who kidnapped and kept her children (Elrond and Elros, yes, that Elrond for those not familiar with Tolkienâs Legendarium and only watched the movies) as hostages are their ~*real parents*~ after committing a third almost-genocide against her people.
Yeah, no. GRRM doesnât get to pretend heâs shocked and/or confused by his readersâ reception to Sansa (and Cat). He does not live, read nor write in a vacuum. This shit has been part of Fantasy fandom since long before ASoIaF was an errant idea in his head.

Read Darkness Within all in one sitting last night and then passed out so here are my scattered thoughts i wrote down as i read, (afterthoughts in parenthesis)
Darkness Within Spoilers, obv
UGH GOD THE SECOND HAND EMBARRESMENT FROM SQUIRREL FAKE FLIRTING WITH ASHFUR IT HURTS
Just remembered Sandynose died and got a small boost of happiness (will Hawkwing and Plumwillow ever be allowed to talk again now? I mean probly not b/c they arenât protags and non-protags donât rly have friends but I can hope. Sorry, Hawkwhing and Plumwillowâs short-lived friendship in Hawkwings Journey was one of the last times I felt something)
Ghost fleas lol
Mothwing: iâm rude now. (but more importantly, Fuck Tigerheartstar for forcing his son to be around the cat that hurt him so badly, like he HAS to know how upset everyone is regarding Shadowsight and his accidentally helping the imposter, and heâs making him be the sole one to tend to him??? There is NO REASON Puddleshine couldnât have done it. You think Puddleshine is going to try and murder someone?? )
Oh no don't make this a traveling book, and a ROOTBRISTLE traveling book this is going to be insufferable
BACON AND EGGS
Lightleap Is Good (Hey didnât Shadowsight have another sister? lets be real we all knew Pouncekit was going to end up as the forgettable 3rd one)
Bristlefrostâs crush continues to feel unnatural to me. Itâs like sheâs grasping at straws romanticizing the most generic things.....wow....I love how ur just so...bare minimum competent....being polite to the loner we came all this way to ask for help like any somewhat reasonable person would....How admirable...I love the way you just *clenches fist* exhibit some basic traits of loyalty and skill that literally every warrior has (I s2g Iâm this close to head canon-ing Bristle as a clueless aromantic who doesn't understand what romance is actually suppose to feel like so she just looks at feelings of low-bar admiration and assumes âoh I guess this is that âromantic attractionâ everyoneâs always talking about? guess I must be in love???â because both her crushes have felt out of nowhere and like. Idk fake/forced sounding like sheâs just telling me that that sheâs In Love Now while I continue to not actually feel it at all from her end. I know itâs just that I hate the way Erinâs write female characters in love but this head-canon makes me laugh)
Got scared because I thought they were going to villainize Spotfur for not wanting kits for a minute, but also excited at the concept of maybe exploring a female character that doesnât want to be a mother, but it turns out she was just pulling a Sparkpelt and actually DID want the kits all along and was only hesitant because sheâs sad. Shrug oh well. Â (the only female character in warriors that was distinctly upset about pregnancy and motherhood was Lizardstripe and as we all know she was eeeeeevil and abusive and âoverly ambitiousâ because why else would you not come around to being happy about motherhood?? YES IâM STILL SALTY ABOUT YELLOWFANGâS SECRET, BAD BOOK)Â Whatever itâs fine so long as Spot doesnât lose her rebel leader spirit forever and default to âsoft momâ personality for the rest of her life, I gotta have hope because I actually like Bristle and Spotâs current relationship. Also I am actually very grateful they never made Bristle resentful at Spot for getting with her crush, as lots of middle grade/YA media has a very bad habit of demonizing female romantic âcompetitionâ and its super gross, so I rly do like that Bristlefrost is so protective and caring towards her instead. )
This series is trying to tell me that Rootspring is actually Big but I refuse to accept that. he has dumb scrawny bitch energy and we all know it
Sunrise: âThunderclan may be better with a new leaderâ lol go off (i mean........they right tho...Itâs unfortunate that the tension in this whole plot is a bit dampened by the fact that i DO in fact want bramble to die v badly. I donât even have special hatred for him, Iâm just bored of him.)
Yes Lionblaze beat the shit out of Ashfur
*HOLY SHIT THATâS FUCKED!!!! (I wrote this in reference to the ghost summoning scene, this was all I could manage at the time, that scene was WILD and I am VIBING WITH THE HORROR OF IT ALL)
* Brashfur: Oh yeah? Could Ashfur fake THIS? *stands up with slightly better posture* Shadowsight: oh damn you got me there...... (asdfhhfhhgh im sorry that was really funny, how did that prove anything?? ONLY A ~REAL~ WARRIOR COULD STAND UP STRAIGHT WE ALL KNOW ASHFUR IS INCAPABLE OF GOOD POSTURE!)
End of the book: *LAUGHING NERVOUSLY* WHAT THE FUCK??? (I thought he was just gonna kill Squirrelflight right there holy shit can you imagine the RIOTS that would ensue in the wake of all this Squirrel/Bramble discourse I was so scared for a second. Â
But itâs fine, she just....went to super hell instead......Warriors has come so far lmao WHAT IS HAPPENING
Final Notes:
*On Mothwing, I donât think her behavior struck me as âCHARACTER BUTCHERINGâ as much as it did for other people? I mean.....Warriors fans will say that literally any time a character does ANYTHING less then perfectly nice I think her actions just seemed that much harsher because we are reading from Shadowsightâs POV, and Shadowsight is taking everything 10x more personally right now (understandably so, but Mothwing isnât inside his head) she wasnât trying to hurt him. Also... like... Shadowsight DID get his name too early. Itâs not Mothwingâs job to put his feelings above everything else, sheâs not even his mentor, Puddleshine on the other hand, as his main mentor, I donât understand what his deal is ignoring Shadowsight, thatâs not how you help an apprentice but I suppose I chalk many of his mistakes up to also not being the most experienced medicine cat (he barely even had his own mentor.) Maybe heâs distant because he feels guilty and actually blames himself for not guiding Shadowsight better?? the two of them havenât communicated about it yet so idk
any way I give Mothwing a pass to be a little short tempered right now as a cat who has had her abilities periodically questioned all her life no matter how hard she works or how much experience she has, just because she doesnât vibe with the spiritual cult side of the clans, I can understand why sheâs a bit defensive of being questioned and frustrated watching so much hurt happen Yet Again due to reliance on StarClan visions over common sense, and I for one still stan her for slandering StarClan and refusing to accept Mistystarâs bullshit banishing like everyone else. Sometimes a character is at the end of their rope and canât manage to be 100% nice 24/7 and thatâs maybe not inherently bad writing? idk just my hot take. At a certain point we all gotta reckon with the fact that our perception of most popular supporting characters in heavily colored by fanon and we canât always get mad at the authors for not adhering to it
*The sisters magic shit is my fav worldbuilding warriors has had in AGES, I love the way itâs described and it actually feels like it adds something to this world. I love this horror imagery with the ghosts, very excited for that.Â
*still wonât be thrilled if Ashfur is working alone, because his motive doesnât make sense right now. I mean the trying to get Squilf thing, sure, whatever, but the âI will make everyone pay for what they did to meâ???? cause like?? Who??? they didnât do anything to him?? Ashfurâs grievance was very specifically JUST Squilf. He has no other cause for revenge, he had no other beef or complaints about the clans to my knowledge? The cat that killed him is dead, and sheâs like, the only other one that I could see as having âwrongedâ him?? I guess he also didnât like Firestar much according to Graystripeâs Vow (and on account of how willing he was to kill him w/ Hawkfrost) but Firestar is ALSO dead. I donât understand his angle. Will have to see last 2 books to judge i suppose.
*All in all I am interested to see where this is going!! but also the pacing as I feared is becoming a major issue. Itâs better then ending the main conflict on book 3 like Vision of Shadows did, but omg. Hardly anything happened in all these pages. I realized I was over half way through and nothing about the situation had actually CHANGED or advanced at all in all that time. Similar to the past 2 books which I believe could have been combined, this plot felt like it should have been the first half of a book. Discussing whether or not to kill the imposter isnât much of a standalone plot, itâs just the set up to a plot. Finding the sisters didnât need to be a whole long thing, the debates about the Imposters fate didnât need to be repeated 10 times, all those chapters illustrating that âShadowsight is sadâ were also drawn out, repetitive, and interchangeable, we probably only needed 2 or so chapters showing his struggles to get the necessary information across. It felt like a lot of padding, it was really slow and I did a lot of skimming. I am still very interested in the overarching plot and mystery behind the ghosts so that kept me reading but man this âwill they wonât they kill himâ plot did not justify itâs own whole book. Alas this is a persisting issue that will never be resolved while they continue to force 6 books into 1 series that doesnât need 6 books. Iâm sure the writers are doing the best they can with these unfortunate constraints but still, itâs a wonder this slow padding isnât more of a detriment to their younger readers that the books are supposed to be marketed to.

Vexed has however decided to speak on Ironwood. ... Guess how that goes.
âIronwood is such a cartoon villain! Look at how he is framed!â
This would mean a little more than jackshit to me if this was real or at least not coming a RWBY watcher since the latter would be all about manipulative editing and the later I might believe wouldnât need to be handheld through a basic scene but not only is Ironwood a fictional character in a fictional show where youâre trying to invoke emotions in the audience: The RWBY fandom canât analyze a scene worth shit unless someone walks on screen and literally explains everything. And Vexed himself is such a manipulatve liar that heâs even LESS trustworthy.
Not to mention Iâve seen footage of Hitlerâs speeches and the responses- you can go a few levels deeper in reality itself. Not really that cartoonish to me.
âThey thought they made him a villain at the end of Volume 7 but failed miserably!â
A. Judging from the reactions and how Ironwoodâs defenders were half made up of people whoâd side with anything they think is the opposite of what the writersâ intended- Iâd say they did the job perfectly fine.
And B. This is exactly what I was talking about. The fact that someone didnât roll out a fucking flowchart of his character you immediately started interpreting Ironwoodâs downfall as a failure to make him a villain. You literally took basic ambiguity necessary for good writing and twisted it to make things look bad.
Youâre the fucking reason why RWBY is blunter than a stonerâs cigarette.Â
âThey ACCIDENTALLY made him compelling!â
... You do know the commentary you are quoting doesnât say âwe tried to make Ironwood not compellingâ in any form right? All theyâre saying is âwe wanted to make Ironwoodâs descent into villainy understandable and subtle.â In fact, the writerâs job is suppose to be about making the villain compelling so they likely INTENDED on it.
... You mixed up âcompellingâ and âsympatheticâ didnât you? That either means you donât know what those words mean or you have an incredibly narrow view of villains.
Also I gotta love that âOh, he was only making hard choices and yet heâs a VILLAIN?!â. Not only does it ignore that villains are made by their choices, bad things can happen due to good choices and that itâd be thematic SUICIDE to portray Ironwood as in the right while kicking the more moral Ozpin for his actions-Â
It also showcases youâre just a salty Ironwood fanboy. You didnât consider how he got here as a character or what makes sense for what he represents- You got pissed your headcanons of a character was contradicted so you pitch a fit. I know this because you pulled this shit with WEISS before.
âIsnât it strange that Salem was used to set up Ironwoodâs ultimatium?â
No. Ironwoodâs flaws as a character have always been centered around his reaction to Salemâs existence. He acts unilaterially when he believes Salem is close by, his paranoia flares up when Salem is concerned, his stubbornness is the result of glorifying Salem as this nigh unstoppable evil that must be stopped at any cost.
Of course heâs at his lowest when Salem is there: this once in the background ultimate evil is now making public moves, everything is stacked against him and he sees other peopleâs ways as having failed. Why wouldnât he dig in his heels when faced with such a situation considering his character?
âIâll be doing a video on Salem at the end of this Volume-â
And I know itâll be as much of a failure as all the others. You could literally release a video of you saying âRWBY badâ for ten minutes sand get the same reaction.
âLetâs focus on James, who was the best character in the show-â
Subjective and shows your bias AGAIN.
âWho was the focal point of Volume 7-â
A. Thatâs actually more him and Ruby but you arenât the type to pay attention.
And B. You are now acknowledging the existence of his actions in Volume 7. You cannot try to say his descent wasnât explored unless itâs admission you didnât understand Volume 7.
âThe man who hasnât done much of anything in the first half of this Volume-â
That is such bullshit I donât even know where to start?
He caused the events of Volume 8 to play out. He contacted Penny, setting up her own doubts about her decision, he used Watts to make the virus that setup the climax, he denies the heroes access to resources thus preventing them from attacking Salem, he puts them on edge from his orders to arrest preventing the heroes from openly acting-
Heâs pulling as much weight as RUBY here and Iâm honestly insulted.
âThe man who is now just a crazy cartoon villain.â
You know, this reminds me of a comment I saw once. It was about Persona 5â˛s villains and how everyone said they were cartoon villains too. ... I then proceeded to point out how each one was actually pretty realistic when you actually look at reality.
Kamoshida? Replace âGym school teacherâ to âRich manâ and you have Jeffry Epstein. (Who didnât commit suicide)
Madrame? *jabs at RT*
Okumura? He was based on real life Japanese business tycoons and their actions.
Shido? Literally every US politician.
Same applies here, but even worse. Ironwood descended from a high perch due to very serious circumstances, doing all this in a misguided attempt to protect people. A certain senile President did similarly shady shit...to protect himself.
You canât call âcartoon villainâ to a man more understandable than REAL PEOPLE.
âMake a decision- Mantle dies or Mantle dies! HOW STUPID!â
Completely ignoring how they believe they can still save Mantle...and Ironwood is using that to try and force their hand.
Literally anyone who tries to be manipulative does that. And again, I understand him better than...well, everyone who HAS tried that.
âI would have respected him more if he just blew up Mantle-â
So kill the tone of the show, the main conflict of the past two Volumes AND his characterization as a pragmatist?
Someone check Vexedâs foot and make sure itâs still there: heâs shot it so many times now.
âExplain to me why he wonât just let Mantle evacuate?â
Heâs incredibly stubborn, mentally scarred and physiologically compromised? AKA his CHARACTER?
âIRONWOOD ISNâT THINKING! RWBY BAD!â
Itâs the fucking INTENT to show he isnât thinking. All youâre doing is proving the writersâ competence at this point.
âRuby should have just said Penny was in Mantle-â
To the guy whose immensely unstable at this point, saying âHey, my only bargaining chip is in that place you donât care about where you can possibly get the chip by killing Penny and finding who has the Maiden powers now!â?
Sounds like youâre the one missing more than half a brain.
âPLAN FAILED!â
Yes, your plan did fail because My IQ isnât in the negatives.
âI love how the writers thinking that Ironwood acknowledging heâs slow-â
... You took a look at this scene, with him looking like that, with that music, with the context of his character, with the question of his character, with Winterâs look at him...
And came to THAT conclusion?
... Yeah weâre done here. Iâm not giving any more effort. Iâve clearly given a Herculean amount of it compared to Vexed.
Iâll end this with a quote from one of my favorite Bad Religion songs:
Life is the crummiest book I ever read There isn't a hook, just a lot of cheap shots Pictures to shock and characters an amateur
Would never dream up
Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction

A sudden revelation came to me : the big twin besties!!! Davey Sarah Mike Ike would be chaos if theyâre together but that is okay bcs we love them. That is all thank youđ
They would!! Iâm gonna do them in modern AU, so I hope thatâs okay, Rai!!
This is going to be pure chaos. Nothing else. Literally no part of this is serious. Itâs just pure dumbassery among friends.
Also Les definitely does dance competitions. He goes to the same studio as Race. He competes in a mini division and he does tap and hip hop and his group wins. Fight me.
Tw: swearing.
...
âDavey, pop the popcorn faster!â Sarah hollered from the living room.
âSarah, shut the fuck up!â Davey hollered back. He loved his sister, but she annoyed the hell out of him.
Well, Les did, too. He guessed it was a sibling thing in general, but there was something about knowing someone since before birth that gave you a special ability to get on their nerves.
Plus, it wasnât like he could make the microwave work any faster.
âWhat are we watching tonight?â he called while he waited.
âIsnât it obvious?â Sarah shouted indignantly.
At the same time, Mike yelled, âWeâre binge-watchinâ Liv and Maddie!â
âOh, of course! Thatâs so fuckinâ obvious!â Davey shook his head, wishing he could stop himself from smiling as he muttered to himself, âWeâre such huge fucking dorks.â
They were, of course, watching Liv and Maddie because they were two sets of twins left alone in a house for the night, and that tv show was about a pair of twins. The Jacobs parents were taking Les to a dance competition and the Guzman parents were going to a wedding.
Honestly, Davey was pretty sure theyâd left them all together because out of the four of them, Sarah was the only good cook, Mike was the only good driver, Ike was the one who knew how to operate a can opener, and Davey was the one with common sense. Together, they formed a fully-functional teenager.
Also, they all already had partners, so the parents trusted them to be left alone all night together, unlike when Sarah and Ike asked if they could have Jojo, Hotshot, Katherine, and Jack over, too.
Davey heard the TV start up and silently willed the microwave to work faster.
âYa canât start without Davey, Sarââ
âIke, I donât know how to break this to ya, but I donât give a shit.â
Honestly, Davey had expected that, âThanks for tryinâ, Ike!â
âNo problem, Dave!â
The popcorn finally finished popping, and Davey grabbed the huge bag of M&Ms on the way out of the kitchen with it before going to join his sister and friends in watching Liv and Maddieâs shenanigans.
Ah yes. The ultimate twin night. Admittedly, the feral energy of all four of them was better than it wouldâve been if it was just him and Sarah.
And Ike was smirking at his phone, which of course meant Davey had to tease him.
âTextinâ Hotshot, huh?â he asked, poking him in the shoulder.
Ike batted his hand away, âShut up.â
Mike laughed, âOoh, that means thereâs somethinâ to hide.â
Sarah slung an arm around his shoulders, âAre you gonna fight? Cause I honestly canât decide whoâd win.â
âNope,â Davey said automatically, âCanât do that. We canât have any death matches destroying the living room or our folks will never let us do this again.â
âI guess the blood would ruin your carpet.â
âWell, Mikey, itâs not like I donât know how to get blood out of things.â
âWhyâoh. Okay.â
Sarah laughed maniacally at the look on his face. It wasnât that he looked grossed out or anything, just kind of surprised to be thinking about it.
Davey was pretty familiar with having to grab spare pads from the hall closet if the bathroom ran out and tagging along on milkshake runs during Sarahâs time of month, but he guessed a boy without sisters wouldnât have to think about that kind of thing.
âSo, how are things with Hotshot?â he asked, changing the subject.
Ike shrugged, âGood. Howâs Jack?â
âHeâs over here like, all the time,â Sarah said, rolling her eyes, âOr Daveyâs over there. Itâs cute in a gross way.â
âFight me, Sarah. Youâre the same way with Katherine.â
âBitchââ
âStuff with Jojo is good, by the way,â Mike chimed in, âGod, I love him.â
âWe get it, youâre cute, now shut up.â
Sarah swatted him, âThatâs not very nice, Isaac.â
âYeah, those are bold words from someone whoâs baby pictures I have access to,â Mike agreed.
âYou wouldnât.â
âTry me, bitch.â
âAgain, we canât have a death match without destroying stuff,â Davey reminded them, âSo can we just kick back and watch our show?â
Ike butted his head against Daveyâs shoulder like a cat affectionately, âWe should skip forward a couple seasons so we can watch Liv and Holden break up and cry.â
âNo,â Sarah said immediately, âMy eyeliner looks really good today.â
âYouâre at a sleepover,â Davey pointed out, âWhy did you even do your eyeliner?â
âDavid, I swear to God.â
âYou swear to God what?â
âDonât listen to him,â Mike said, reaching over to hug her, âYou look fuckinâ amazing and you and Kathy usually make the rest of us look like slobs.â
âAw, thanks Michael.â
âDonât call me Michael.â
They actually managed to watch about half the episode without talking, before Ike shattered the silence.
âOkay, but do we think Joeyâs gay?â
âI think Willowâs obsession with him is creepy and itâs super questionable how the writers played it off for laughs,â Mike admitted, âI think Joey does like girls, though. He has chemistry with a few different girls for like one episode each.â
âBut he definitely has a thing for Josh in the later seasons,â Sarah pointed out.
âOh, yeah. Good point. Maybe heâs bi or pan.â
Davey had never thought heâd have a conversation like this, but he had to admit they had a point.
âMaddie and Willow wouldâve made a cute couple,â he said, âMaddie canât drive. That alone is proof sheâs not straight. And Liv had chemistry with Holden, but she wouldâve been cute with Andie, too.â
âOh, preach, bro,â Ike agreed, âAnd I think one of my first crushes when I was in middle school was actually on Parker from Liv and Maddie, so...â
âParkerâs bi and ace,â Mike said immediately, âIâm callinâ it. I donât even need any evidence; just by vibes. Heâs just this bi-ace mad scientist.â
âBut seriously,â Sarah insisted, âJoey had a thing for Josh and I think it was requited.â
Davey rolled his eyes, âDuh. Was that ever up for debate after that one episode where the only thing that made Josh feel better about his breakup with Maddie was Joey?â
âSo in short, none of the Rooney siblings are straight,â Mike concluded.
âYup.â
âUh-huh.â
âYes.â
Davey smirked, âKinda like how none of the siblings in this room are straight.â
âAw,â Mike grinned, âAre you sayinâ you sees Ike and I as siblings?â
âMore like weâre all in a cult and we call each other siblings, Brother Mike.â
âOh yes of course, Brother Davey.â
âYouâre both ridiculous.â
âAre you actinâ like you have custody of the brain cell, Sister Sarah?â
âNo, of course not, Brother Ike. Brother Davey has it. He just never uses it.â
âI use the brain cell frequently, thank you very much,â Davey said indignantly, âJust not in conversations with people who donât even have one.â
âOh, burn!â Ike shouted, and Davey accepted a high five.
It looked like Sarah didnât have anything to say to that. Probably because she didnât have the brain cell.
Whatever. If the Rooney siblings could survive with only one brain cell, which the youngest sibling always had, Davey was pretty sure the four of them could, too.
...
This probably makes no sense if youâve never seen Liv and Maddie. Iâm sorry.

Darren how do you deal with stage fright .... iâve been preforming in front of people for a while and i i still get scared . Does it ever go away ?
i guess it depends on how big the crowd is. everybody's different but I will say any kind of fright means you care, which is a good thing! Also the thing people forget about performing, for the most part, is you can't SEE the audience, most of the time they're in the dark. That's why performing for friends or in a small space where you can see everyone is much more nerve-racking
â
Darren Criss 18:08:57

what a good question. I have no idea but I've been wanting to see that show for almost as long as I've wanted to make Royalties. The boys have been talking about that one for a while now.

Did you write each of the songs with the performers in mind or did you cast them afterwards?
great question. Except for "Also You," which was written with Jackie Tohn for Jackie Tohn, we had no idea who would sing each song. I did the demos for almost all of them and then we had to pitch actors/artists to see if they'd be interested... which wasn't as hard (luckily) as seeing if they were AVAILABLE... which many weren't given the short time we had to make the show. Hopefully we can get some of those folks on for the next season IF THEY'LL LET US HAVE ONE!
â
Darren Criss 18:13:52

god i wish.
â
Darren Criss 18:15:39
damn someone said "travel to UK challenge" and I meant to respond "find a vaccine challenge"
â
Darren Criss 18:17:08
i can't hear any of these songs but I"m just gonna start saying random shit about them
â
Darren Criss 18:17:16
first off, i really wanted a theme song
â
Darren Criss 18:17:23
that was a whole thing
â
Darren Criss 18:19:18
Had to cut through a lot of red tape to make sure we had that silly song in there. We were already in the middle of post production when I finally got it approved, but it had to be under 15 seconds. I wrote 3 diff versions. So glad it ended up working. Theme songs accomplish so much in such a short period of time. Establishes tone. Gives the audience an almost Pavlovian response to the familiarity of the characters... I'm happy with it
â
Darren Criss 18:20:12
also the "doo doo doo" lyrics are meant to sound like "scratch vocals" when songwriters record vocals with temporary gibberish lyrics with the intent of filling them in with real ones later
â
Darren Criss 18:22:29
Just That Good was a concept that started the entire 1st season, and it was one of those instant-songs where Nick and Matt told me the title and I immediately had the hook just from those words. That only happens every once in a while and I was so happy it did for that song. The tricky part was writing the rest of it, but the back half of the song with the chorus repeating that one refrain over and over- that was the melody from the get go
â
Darren Criss 18:23:08
I'll get back to Break it In, kick your shoes/let your hair, and kong later... i'll just go off on this one
â
Darren Criss 18:23:48
so I wanted to nod to the grandeur of everyone's favorite vampire elf, Jared Leto
â
Darren Criss 18:24:05
not HIM specifically, but 30 seconds to mars' very BIG music videos
â
Darren Criss 18:24:29
i dont jared is a buncha self centered nutcases like our guys in SWITCHBACK JACKET
â
Darren Criss 18:24:37
* i don't think Jared...Â
â
Darren Criss 18:25:38
anyway yeah "so much better..." comes from a lot of the 90s alt rock that I grew up on, and the mix of that sound with a bit of electronic production was an effort to contemportize it as much as possible
â
Darren Criss 18:26:26
but the rhythm guitar, lots of power chords and high octaves were all harkening to my fave bands like Lit and Eve 6... but put through a strange bizzaro nickleback/creed performance filter
â
Darren Criss 18:26:55
"make you come true" is obviously a very salacious play on words
â
Darren Criss 18:28:27
so the only way to make it feel earnest is if we made the track itself sexy as possible. A lot of the songs, even without being written, leant themselves to a certain genre just by the title, and this one was kind of a no-brainer. Sexy mid tempo r&b. And I didn't even know we'd get Jordan Fisher to do it- who SMASHED the vocal.
â
Darren Criss 18:29:42
lauraacampbell-12
DARREN CHORDS OR LYRICS FIRST WHEN WRITING A SONG?
it's different every time but for this show specifically it's always title/idea first, and then the song comes from there. But that's because we're writing a show, so we have the luxury of getting to write from a specific place. It's much harder to do that in your own life when you just want to pull a title/idea from your own experience of life. I commend people that do that all the time.
â
Darren Criss 18:30:06
what's NUTS about prizefighter is...
â
Darren Criss 18:30:24
it was originally a song called LONG RANGER that BONNIE MCKEE sang, who I wrote the song with
â
Darren Criss 18:30:38
and in the video we had CHRISSY TIEGEN lipsynching
â
Darren Criss 18:30:44
it was bananas
â
Darren Criss 18:31:26
we ultimately couldn't use the song because of some complicated writers shit- not too dissimilar from the things we explore in our own show, which is just totally ironic.
â
Darren Criss 18:32:56
we were so bummed that we couldn't use the song but I'm actually really really happy with PRIZEFIGHTER. I love the song, and I love how it turned out production wise. I love how much of a massive influence latin x rhythms have had across the entire spectrum of mainstream music, so I wanted try my own hand at nodding to it!
â
Darren Criss 18:33:08
Lara :)!
Ahhhhh so was that the pilot song you were talking about last week?
that's the one
â
Darren Criss 18:33:45
hbz3jctrg5rwwma640hahffvt
You have inspired me to learn piano I already know how to play teanage dream now
you can thank Bonnie Mckee aka Kimmy Kelly for writing that song!
â
Darren Criss 18:34:01
ok then there's the k pop song
â
Darren Criss 18:34:08
honestly i had no idea where I was gonna start on this one
â
Darren Criss 18:34:22
full props to the brilliant CJ Baran who I wrote this song with
â
Darren Criss 18:34:39
we were just toying around with very industrial-sounding samples
â
Darren Criss 18:35:21
and I started singing Edvard Grieg's "in the hall of the mountain king"
â
Darren Criss 18:35:33
and he was the guy that was like YEAH JUST PUT IT IN THERE
â
Darren Criss 18:35:46
and i realized, oh yeah, that song is public domain
â
Darren Criss 18:35:59
and kinda ties perfectly to the nature of Elia Peck and his songwriting... huh.
â
Darren Criss 18:36:05
So we went for it from there.
â
Darren Criss 18:36:17
based the lyrics off of what the Neals say in the room.
â
Darren Criss 18:36:34
and then just wrote a bunch of ALMOST nonense lyrics about things that you could HATE that you NEED
â
Darren Criss 18:36:40
things like available wifi...
â
Darren Criss 18:37:01
artistinal mai-tais.... yeah I guess if you really really liked those you could HATE that you NEED them...
â
Darren Criss 18:37:04
etc etc
â
Darren Criss18:38:16
but the idea was to have Mariam Hale's character hardly do ANYTHING on the track, since she, as the audience sees, doesn't really have much to offer... so we just built it around this huge track with crazy lyrics that just tees up a tag for her to say without even having to sing: I HATE THAT I NEED YOU
â
Darren Criss18:38:43
2235n5s2qk5hjsujbhk5ilpva
I have classes in 10 minutes, and I'm not leaving until you dedicate a Royalties song to me.
looks like you're gonna miss calss
â
Darren Criss 18:39:09
"calss" ha. which is like "class" but like... different.
â
Darren Criss 18:39:32
alrighty PERFECT SONG
â
Darren Criss 18:39:38
i really love this song as well
â
Darren Criss 18:40:02
the reveal of this song is that they keep talking about this "perfect song" they've written
â
Darren Criss 18:40:26
in other words we're teeing up a pretty big expectation of what a perfect song could possibly sound like
â
Darren Criss 18:40:36
the reveal of course is that the song itself is in fact just called "perfect song"
â
Darren Criss 18:40:43
which is ABOUT a perfect song
â
Darren Criss 18:41:07
and about TRYING TO WRITE a perfect song, and how that's not necessary when you have someone that IS the perfect song
â
Darren Criss 18:41:20
when we wrapped our heads around that idea, I really loved itÂ
â
Darren Criss 18:42:10
you'll notice we reference a lot of incredible songs, almost citing them as perfect songs themselves
â
Darren Criss 18:42:14
ain't no mountain high enough
â
Darren Criss 18:42:55
of course leonard cohen's seminal Hallelujah
â
Darren Criss 18:44:05
and of course Britney's Oops I Did It Again ha ;)
â
Darren Criss 18:45:00
the Oops being a layered joke of being annoyed with oneself that they AGAIN unwittingly wrote a lyric for already massive song, but in doing so citing yet ANOTHER already massive song... if that makes any sense
â
Darren Criss 18:45:27
sorry for the typos yall i'm moving fast, i'd never let this shit slide if it wasn't a casual chatroom vibe
â
Darren Criss 18:46:37

Did you know you wanted there to be a romantic thing between pierce and Sara?? :))))
yes that was actually our original "pilot presentation" episode. the one with the song LONE RANGER and Chrissy Tiegen. It was a longer version of what would become episode 7. We THINK it's a romantic thing but you realize that Sara is just playing Pierce to get the song she needs. That was always the premise yes.
â
Darren Criss 18:46:51
luzmargotramos
if you reply with a single dot I'd probably die
then I better steer clear of any dots
â
Darren Criss 18:47:04
ALSO YOU was an amazing lightning in a bottle moment
â
Darren Criss 18:47:09
FULL CREDIT TO JACKIE TOHN
â
Darren Criss 18:47:22
i always enjoy giving credit where credit is due
â
Darren Criss 18:48:24
and I came in pretty hot for most of the songs- concepts, chords, style... but this one literally was a simple as Jackie Sitting down and just playing "It's you I love but also you and also you and also you."
â
Darren Criss 18:48:37
we all just looked at each other going, welp, yup, that's it, jackie you fuckin rule
â
Darren Criss 18:49:28
the song would have ended up very differently if she hadn't brought that to the table. the original episode and song was "one true loves" which isn't nearly as good of a gag/title as "also you"
â
Darren Criss 18:49:50
i ended up squeezing "one true loves" into the bridge, but of course, kept ALSO YOU as the main event
â
Darren Criss 18:50:02
i will say I was also trying to spoof my brother's old band, FREELANCE WHALES a little bit
â
Darren Criss 18:50:26
if you guys know the song "generator first floor" where they sing ay ay ay ay ay a lot...
â
Darren Criss 18:50:35
... as a lot of bands and songs had featured at the time...
â
Darren Criss 18:51:00
i wanted to put them all in one joke. where a band sang not only hey hey hey but ay and EE and AYE and OH and basically all the vowels
â
Darren Criss 18:51:10
which was where the joke of,
â
Darren Criss 18:51:20
a, e, i, o, and also u
â
Darren Criss 18:51:21
came from
â
Darren Criss 18:51:32
which i'm particularly proud of
â
Darren Criss 18:51:56
ok let's talk about BREAK IT IN
â
Darren Criss 18:54:16
lxucxthxrxnx_
Iâm a musician myself (not that great lol) what was it like coming up with the melodic side did you play any instruments for the songs?
i played instruments on all the songs except Break It In and I Hate That I Need You, since those were all electronic. That's not to say i played EVERY instrument but I definitely played AN instrument of some kind for the others.
â
Darren Criss 18:55:34
as for break it in... anyway... yeah that was a blast. Nick Lang and I collaborated with my buddy Kendo who goes by the artist name KingJet.
â
Darren Criss 18:56:54
Kendo has worked on a lot of legit songs in the hip hop space. For each song I wanted to make sure there was a level of authenticity to what we were doing. I didn't wanna SPOOF the songs. I wanted the songs to sound rock solid and that it would be the LYRICAL CONCEPTS that would be the source of satire. So Kendo was a great guiding light to keep the track as authentic as possible.
â
Darren Criss 18:59:47
We explained to Kendo the whole joke concept of the song, which is basically just turning the idea of toxic masculinity on its head, and he was on top of it immediately- when we told him that there's this guy that's really concerned that people think he "fucks too soft" he immediately started spitting out lyrics like the hilariously defiant "I'm the KING OF THE HARD FUCK"
â
Darren Criss 19:00:35
which just killed me and Nick. It was just so juvenile that it was adorable to me
â
Darren Criss 19:00:57

Darren youâve been here for an hour? Thatâs the length of royalties man xxx
yeah aint it great

i personally think you should try your hand at writing a drill song, a british genre of rap that centres around rapping unrelated lyrics in front of chicken shops, personally think it has the right tone for the show for a season two
drill would be siq. I mean, opening the incredible pandora's box of UK based hip hop in general is its own magical wormhole of nuance and history and regional culture. it's amazing. i'd really have to do some homework if I wanted to pull that off!

How much music theory goes into your songwriting? And did you learn all of it from playing the violin? In what way does it go into your songs?
all GREAT questions. I mean, music theory isn't something you CONSCIOUSLY employ when writing something, it's just that it really helps to know the rules or music when shaping it and trying to maximize its production. And as a matter of fact, yeah, I DID learn most of it playing violin. But when I was playing violin I was ingesting music from the perspective of a student ingesting information, not as a proactive creator putting anything of my own out into the world.
â
Darren Criss 19:08:07
Honestly I really didn't start UNDERSTANDING music theory until I started writing music for other people, and noticing certain things and chords and shapes had names and that they could be manipulated to accomplish certain things
â
Darren Criss 19:08:35
so most of my academic musical knowledge came in my 20s when I tried to start doing it professionally

Now its available, would you change anything?
jesus so much. but such is the nature of creating stuff. there's a great Hayao Miyazaki quote about always having to make new stuff to escape the woe of all the mistakes you made in your last thing... I mean, that's a bit extreme, I feel like we did the best we could given the circumstance but I totally get where Miyazaki is coming from. And in many ways that's everything we do in life. Do your best, know what you coulda done better and carry on

Darren I need an answer itâs been annoying me for days. So was everyone fucking everyone in Pierces old band or was she just fucking everyone seperately??
ha that's a really great question. I figured she was just fucking everyone individually, which is why the band was so contentious but then again I'd rather let your imagination run wild...

Darren, I love your taste in music. You should share your personal playlists ... bc everybody needs to know phantom planet đ
if i actually shared my tastes in music, or actually shared the amount of stuff in my brain at the rate that I want to share, I would never work on or create anything because i would constantly be on the internet and you'd all be over me if you weren't already

what other instruments would you like to learn in the future?
i just need to spend time trying to get better at the ones I've plateaued with. I feel like I got as good as I'd ever get on the guitar when i was like 19. So I've been trying to get better during the Quarantine. Picked up my violin and dusted off that Vivaldi, started doing drum rudiments on my drum pad, and started learning new licks and scales for guitar. Stuff I never got round to doing.

mr. criss sir, what is your top quarantine activity?
playing music
â
Darren Criss 19:23:26
actually lies. top quarantine activity is learning Japanese. 30 minutes a day. And it's been several months. Almost got Hiragana down, still got a few characters I'm questionable with but with any luck I'll start up on Katakana in the next few weeks.

How different is it doing a show like Royalties where you're heavily involved in the creative process compared to other projects you've done in the past?
i'd say night and day but that's an understatement. When I did Glee all I had to do was act in scenes, record songs, and go to dance rehearsal. With Royalties, it's that AND casting, doing pre production, post production, notes, meetings, notes, writing and producing songs, location scouting, blah blah blah lots of the stuff that you don't have to worry about if you're not a creator. But make no mistake I absolutely love it.

anyway I was so relieved that we left with that song at the end of the day. The intent was always to write two songs with the exact same concepts just with different titles
â

the chords are the same, just slightly different voicings played on slightly different instruments
â
Darren Criss 19:33:29
and the idea was that whichever song was funnier, or at least whichever song would be more fun to see in a music video... would be the one that Pierce & Sara write
â

NOTES:
Friday January 22nd
chapter twenty-five: said i'm fine but it wasn't true
It was Mikasa and Leviâs grandfatherâs birthday.
Mikasa only knew it was by the calendar in the kitchen.
âHe was an ass anyway. You didnât miss much by not knowing him,â Levi informed her as he did every year.
Armin and Eren left that afternoon.
--------------------
Apparently being a dumbass was contagious.
While Zeke was trying to process the file Levi had given him, Armin had dropped Eren off back at the house on Friday morning.
"Niccolo and Sasha broke up," Eren informed him. "Well, not that they were actually together yetâŚ"
Zeke groaned. "Why?"
"Apparently, he had some issues with her still being friends with Connie...is Pieck drunk on our couch? It's not even the afternoon!"
"You're one to talk, tiny Jaeger," Pieck said from the couch.
"Oh see that dumbass there just broke up with her boyfriend too," Zeke said as he pointed at her.
"He wasn't my boyfriend!"
"Wait, is this the mystery guy? Who was he?"
Pieck face planted into the couch and mumbled something that Eren and Zeke didn't understand.
"Is she drunk?" Eren asked him.
"On sugar probably. She already ate the last of the ice cream."
Eren didnât say anything as he went to his room upstairs.
Zeke looked over the still face planted Pieck.
âWill you go talk to him already? It is not too late to go back and tell him you are a dumbass,â Zeke said as he looked at the scans of the file on his computer.
âIt is! I broke his heart and now heâs going to go out with a younger woman.â Pieck said as she sat up.
Why did Zeke have to be the only sane one in his group of friends?
âYou didnât see his face, Zeke. I destroyed him and just left. Without looking back.â
âPieck...go back. Go admit your fuck up.â
Zeke had seen Pieck cry a handful of times. Once when her father had been diagnosed with cancer and the other when Dina had died.
But not like this.
Pieck hadnât been in many relationships. She always said things like she was allergic to relationships or why waste time on something that statistically wouldnât work out. No, Pieck was married to her art.
It was this moment that Zeke realized Pieck had said all of these things to keep herself safe from this.
The tears were streaming down her face.
Eren came downstairs and stopped there.
âPieckâŚ.â Eren said as he crossed to Pieck.
âI just see him in my head. I go back and heâs already with her. Sheâs so much younger and prettier than I am. I just...I canât. Eren, Iâm sorry,â Pieck apologized.
âWhy?â Eren asked.
Zeke moved from the table over to sit next to Pieck.
âHeâs your friend and youâre going to find out very soon. Itâs Jean. Iâm sorry,â Pieck began crying more.
Zeke did not have the first clue about what to do. Neither did Eren.
âIâm going to make a phone call,â Eren said before stepping out of the room.
âDonât! It has to be over. I donât want to feel thisâŚ.anymore..â
âOkay,â Eren said. âI wonât call Jean.â
Eren stepped out of the room.
After what happened with Armin and Mikasa, Eren said he wouldnât lie about things like this anymore. But Eren had to lie this time.
He went out of the room and pressed Jeanâs contact in his phone.
âWhat do you want, Jaeger? Now is not a good time,â Jeanâs voice rang out on the other side of the phone.
âAre you in love with Pieck?â Eren asked.
âWhat? Why is that any of your business?â
âBecause sheâs crying to Zeke in my living room right now.â
âSheâs the one who ended it. Not me! So donât come at me about it.â
âIâm not. I just..â
âWhat do you want me to do, Eren? Beg her to stay? I told her just to say the word and Iâd tell my mom not to set me up on a date. I told her I loved her. She said she didnât feel the same. She said she didnât love me and it was just sex. So no, Iâm not fucking begging her when sheâs made her feeling perfectly clear. Weâre not you and Mikasa. If she wanted to be with me, she had the chance.â
Eren couldnât argue with that.
âIâm sorry,â Eren said after a moment.
âItâs whatever. Iâll bounce back. I mean how can I not? Iâm me.â
âIf you need to talkâŚâ
âYouâd be the one Iâd call?â
âIf anyone knows about losing the one they loveâŚâ
âWell, youâve got a point there. You do know about fucking things up, donât you? You idiot. How is that going by the way?â
âGood.â
âGood. Donât do that again.â
âOh. Donât worry. I wonât. By the way, why didnât you make a move on Mikasa when we were broken up?â
âBecause unlike you, Iâm not an idiot.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âI dropped that idea the day I asked her out and she turned me down. She told me she had feelings for you and then when I saw you two together the next day, I knew. You two were meant for one another. Even if youâre an idiot who fucked it up, I wasnât. I knew there was no way I could compete with you...when it comes to Mikasa.â
âDid you just say something nice to me?â
âDonât get used to it.â
âOkay, horseface.â
âFucking idiot.â
â...you want to get online and shoot some shit?â
âGive me ten minutes.â
âDonât pull my rank down.â
âDonât pull mine.â
--------------
Pieck eventually stopped crying.
Zeke patted her on her back while she cried.
And Pieck cried until she couldnât cry anymore.
She was done.
âSo teach me another song.â
âDo you..â
âNo.â
âOkay. Yeah, sure.â
----------------
Mikasaâs writerâs block had begun to disappear. She spent most of the day in the sun room writing lyrics to one of the unfinished pieces she had from Historia.
Annie had given up on work half way through her shift and shuffled into the sun room where Ymir was restringing her acoustic guitar.
The sound of power tools in the basement could be heard.
âThey having any luck down there?â Annie asked before she sat down in one of the chairs.
âThey brought up some ripped out carpet,â Ymir said as she tightened the string down.
âSo this is actually happening. Weâre going to record,â Annie gave a small smile.
âWeâve come a long way in a little over a year,â Ymir replied as she finished tightening the string down. âSpeaking of coming a long way, howâs our social media numbers looking?â
Annie sighed, âwell, Facebook sits at the same numbers. Twitter gained a few. YouTube has gone up. Instagram is the problem. Weâre dropping views on whatever we post in the feed.â
âWhy?â Mikasa asked as she stopped playing.
âItâs the algorithm. The more people who see and interact with our stuff, the more it spreads but it has to show up on the feed first. Weâre fucked sometimes. Iâve been trying to put everything into stories where I can but people still have to interact with it.â
âYou remember the days when things were just chronical on our feeds?â Ymir asked. âNow you have to be a math genius like Annie to get anywhere.â
âTo be fair, I still havenât beat it.â
âYouâll figure it out. You always do.â
âWe all need to interact with the posts. Thatâll help too. I know we have been but we have to keep it up.â
âJust tag me in that shit and Iâll share it everywhere. Speaking of genius...are we going to have another new song or what?â Ymir asked as she looked over at Mikasa.
âIâm working on it. Have we thought about the idea of collaborating with The Restorationists? Their follower numbers are larger than ours. Plus, they just got a new bassist. Might be a good idea to see if they want to do a livestream with us or something,â Mikasa said before she shrugged.
âWhat about Niccolo and Sasha?â Ymir asked.
âYeah, Iâm worried about that too,â Mikasa sighed.
âWouldnât hurt to ask,â Annie shrugged.
-----------------
Sasha kept her word of not speaking to Niccolo for a little bit. He didnât try to contact her and she didnât try to contact him. However, as Sasha had said, the farm was doing great at the farmers market. Mr. Blouse even gave both Sasha and Historia a bonus when they finished work today.
âI donât know how weâre going to have four guitars,â Ymir scoffed.
âAnd a bass,â Annie added.
âYeah, that too. I love the song as much as you all do but Iâm wondering how weâre going to pull it off.â
âWhat about a collaboration with The Restorationists?â Annie asked.
âOh yeah. Niccolo did tag us on their Instagram. We should do that,â Sasha said.
âEven with you and Niccolo being allâŚ.whatever?â Ymir asked.
âI can be professional. Besides, I thought you all wanted this to be a more stripped down song. I can use the cajĂłn,â Sasha shrugged.
âWhat the fuck is a cajĂłn?â Ymir asked.
âThe percussion box,â Sasha answered.
âThen just call it that!â
âThis song is pretty personal, Historia. Iâll leave it up to you,â Sasha said before she hit the cymbal, causing Ymir to jump.
Ymir responded with a very horrible sound from her bass.
Annie sat down on the piano bench next to Mikasa and Historia as she sighed.
âIt is pretty personal,â Mikasa said as she looked over Historia.
âWe need four guitars, two percussion, and a bass. Can they read music?â Historia asked.
âEren can,â Mikasa answered.
âPieck is their bassist now. She can read music,â Annie said.
âDidnât she work at the tutoring center with you for a while?â Ymir asked.
Annie nodded.
âSmall world,â Ymir said.
âThat leaves Zeke and Niccolo,â Historia said.
âNiccolo can,â Sasha answered before looking down.
Levi walked by the sun room with Sawney and Bean following him.
âHey Levi, can Zeke read music?â Ymir asked.
âWhy would I know the answer to that?â Levi asked as he stopped.
âHeâs your therapist. Maybe you two bond over music or something. I donât know but do you know?â
âNo, I donât. It really doesnât come up in conversation.â He continued on his path with Sawney and Bean followed him.
âIâm sure Zeke can read music. I can always call Eren after practice,â Mikasa said as she turned to the next page of her sheet music.
âAre you okay with it being a collaboration, Mikasa?â Historia said.
âIâm okay with it,â she smiled.
âGuess that settles that. Just need to ask The Restorationists. Do you want me on bass, electric, or acoustic for this song?â Ymir asked.
âAcoustic,â Historia and Mikasa said at the same time.
âAll of our bandâŚâ Historia started.
âOn acoustic,â Mikasa finished.
âAdd their band here,â Historia said as she pointed to the music.
âShould we do all five of us singing this lyric here?â Mikasa asked.
âWait, I didnât agree to sing on this song!â Sasha said as she stood up from her drum set.
âOh yes, letâs do that. That should be low enough for everyone to sing, right?â Historia asked.
âItâs hopeless, Sasha. Theyâre in the zone. Theyâre not hearing a thing weâre saying,â Ymir said as she put her bass down on its stand.
âIf thatâs the case, Iâm going to go figure out what to make for dinner,â Sasha said as she left the sun room.
âIâm going to go make myself some more tea before I get morning sickness again,â Annie said as she placed her guitar on the stand.
Historia and Mikasa were left alone in the sun room to continue work on the song.
While Rod Reiss sat on his throne, his daughter was dismantling it in her music.

Thoughts on Even More Games
[vague, unspecific spoilers for Heavenâs Vault, Later Alligator, and Life is Strange 2]
Thoughts on Heavenâs Vault
Heavenâs Vault is a game about archeology, which means itâs also a game about incompleteness. This is very clever. Inkle - also the developers of 80 Days, which I will play someday! - specialize in deep narratives that can be explored many, many ways, allowing for a lot of player choice. You make a lot of small decisions - do you share a discovery with the trader in exchange for a valuable item, or hide it so he doesnât plunder it? do you go looking for your missing friend, or let her stay missing in case there are people trying to follow you to her? These all have their own little arcs and resolutions, and there are so many of them, and so many ways they can play out, that the game can never be played the same way twice. The overall story begins and ends in the same place and theoretically hits the same major beats, but the journey is tailored broadly and finely to each player; itâs a style of design Aaron A. Reed refers to as ânot... a branching tree but a braided rope.â
Making a narrative about archeology is how you dodge the exponentially complicated nature of that design: if there are dozens of locations, characters, plot threads, bits of color, which can be engaged with at many points in time, or ignored, or dropped by the player halfway through, how do you avoid telling a story full of gaps and dead ends? Well... you donât. Having only partial information and having to infer the rest is what archeology is.
The protagonist of Heavenâs Vault, Aliya, is digging up the secrets of an ancient civilization, having been sent by her academy to find a researcher whoâs gone missing, and stumbling into his incredible discovery. Everywhere she goes, there are holes: she has partial understanding of the researcherâs journey and motives; he, in turn, had partial understanding of the mystery he was uncovering, and Aliya has only fragments of his knowledge; the ancient texts she translates are usually fragments of larger works, and she is guessing at the meanings of many of the words; the gameâs constantly updating historical timeline has entire centuries with nothing but question marks. Aliya arrives in a new location and wonders aloud to her robot companion about what this place was, when it was founded, when it was abandoned, how her predecessor found his way her and where he went next and what he took with him.
The constant feeling of discovery - of unearthing - is magnificent. Site after site, I asked, âWhat is this place?â Always thinking, if the eventual answer is any good, this is going to be one of the best games Iâve ever played. And, in the end, it doesnât give you an answer, it just give you enough to make the story feel complete. It answers by not answering.
Also, translating alien texts is just extremely my jam. Iâm the weirdo who enjoyed the ending of Arrival but secretly wished the whole movie had been about xenolinguistics like the first half. I guess Inkle felt similar.
The gameâs by no means perfect. I think I enjoyed the sailing between worlds more than most - itâs slow, but very pretty - but itâs going to discourage a replay. I donât think the relationship between Aliya and her robot, Six, ever gets terribly interesting. Some of the archeology is a little too obviously game-y - sail around, wait to find a random ruin, beam Six down to grab an ancient doodad, translate a bit of text, lo and behold itâs from one of the sites youâre looking for and itâs narrowed your search radius somehow. (It gives Star Trek explanations the first few times - e.g. âit has radiation that only exists in one part of the nebulaâ - and then stops bothering.) And the game sags a little in the middle; it couldâve hacked out 3 or 4 dig sites and still given me the same experience.
But, all told, thereâs magic in it, and it just feels good to be there. Do not sleep on this one.
Thoughts on Later Alligator
Thereâs not a ton to say about this game except that is charming as hell. Lindsay and Alex Small-Butera have build a beautifully animated world of cute alligators, one of whom is having a birthday party where heâs convinced heâs going to be murdered. He wants you to run around getting information out of everyone whoâs going to be there, which you get by completing minigames. Itâs a cast of weird and funny characters with weird and funny dialogue and thereâs not much more to it than that.
The design can be a little frustrating. Some minigames, if you lose, you donât get to try again. Some are annoyingly finicky. You need to complete them all to get the true ending, which means, in my case, playing the game three times to complete all the bits you missed or got locked out of. The ending was a little different each time, so it wasnât a total wash, but the gameâs on a timer that only advances when you play a game or take the bus, and once youâve completed most of the games thereâs a lot of traveling back and forth from one nowhere to another just to advance time to the next unskippable plot beat.
(Itâs also a little unclear what youâre missing as you try to get the final ending, as some of the ongoing puzzle are optional.)
But I canât get mad. The game is too damn cute! Each character is lively and unique, with tons of personality, and the dialogue is just clever enough not to fall into empty adorkability.
It good.
Thoughts on Life is Strange 2
Somewhere, early in the development of Life is Strange 2, some Dontnod employee wrote in a design document âEpisode 4 - cult?â (but in French) and nobody told them âno.â
I will not forgive them for this,
After twenty minutes of LiS2, I was ready to yell at everyone who had reported it was boring. It has one of the most powerful, gut-punching openings of any game Iâve played in recent memory. And all through the first, second, and third episodes, I was in love. Unlike Before the Storm, this was its own creature, willing to make dramatic departures from the original gameâs template. Instead of controlling a character with supernatural powers, you play as the superpowered characterâs older brother. The one with the magic is a 9-year-old, unable to fully understand or control his abilities, suffering a recent trauma, and needing to be guided through a dangerous and racist world. All the ambition missing from Before the Storm is back, and this time the animation isnât creepy and the writing is wildly improved (thanks to some journeyman script work from Fullbrightâs Steve Gaynor) and I even have a computer able to play it on higher graphical settings.
But nothing good lasts.
Everything good about the series screeches to a halt in Episode 4, the one where some asshole said âcult?â and didnât get a Nerf football thrown at their head. And itâs not just that itâs a terrible idea; itâs actually sort of amazing how much the game relies on an alchemy of plot, tone, theme, and writing, and how a slight imbalance can throw the whole thing off. Episode 4 has scene after scene that are powerful in their conception - brothers reunited after a violent rift; a boy having his first conversation with his estranged mother in nearly a decade; getting interrogated by the feds for a crime that canât even be explained by physics - fall flat because the writers canât think of anything interesting for the characters to say. (Steve Gaynorâs name stops appearing in the credits as of this episode.)
And here the gameâs rickety bits, kept delicately together for three episodes, start to shake apart. Dontnodâs overly-earnest voice direction, which I didnât notice in the early episodes, started to wear me down. (âCould you sigh mid-syllable, like youâre slightly overwhelmed with emotion?â âSure, on which line?â âAll of them.â) The thinness of the secondary characters, most of whom pop up for one episode and disappear, became more noticeable. The lack of a mechanical hook like the time rewinding of the original game, and the attendant commentary on choice-based games and power fantasies, made the game feel less substantial. The surreal imagery of the original, obligatorily evoked in the prequel, is sensibly absent, but thereâs nothing equally striking that replaces it. Even the branching path decisions become less clear: the end-of-episode stat screens for the final episodes mentioned at least a dozen choices I didnât even know Iâd made, some of which were critical in shaping my younger brotherâs morality and were not necessarily the choices Iâd have made if Iâd known I was making a choice at all.
Come the final episode, I got An Ending that seemed right for the way Iâd played, but much of the way Iâd played felt accidental.
So what are we to make of this? Life is Strange is a beautiful disaster, an ambitious disaster, where Life is Strange 2 is almost less interesting for being more competent. It has a huge mess of charged topics - American racism, teens losing their virginity, raising a child outside the nuclear family, grief and trauma - and, while it handles them without the gracelessness and sledgehammer subtlety of the original, it doesnât come to any conclusions about any of them. LiS1, for all its jank, had some opinions, where LiS2 falls into the category of âthis sure is some shit, innit?â games.
It starts with a powerful premise, deeply relatable characters, fine writing, beautiful art, but canât even manage, in the end, to be a disaster. It is the only game in the series so far to be forgettable.
