04 - Stained Glass

Bright "Dork" Penny is actually from a few /tg/ threads in late 2018, in which we had the fun idea of an adorkable dragon, and steadily built a town around her. This is from pretty early in her introduction to the town, before most of the suggested campaign plot hooks.

Clearwater was a fairly average port town; according to the fishermen, it was even idyllic. When the wind blew just right, the smell of fresh fish and bread filled several streets. When it blew just wrong, of course, the farms managed to be perfectly upwind, but such were the risks. It was situated on the coast of the Great Crystal Lake, a veritable sea full of water so fair it sparkled like an enormous, polished sapphire when the sun found a good angle. In years past, several traveling poets had said of Clearwater, “it was exactly the sort of town an epic tale would begin in, only to have an unfortunate encounter with a dragon to start things off.”

And, well, they weren’t exactly wrong. But neither were they right.

The morning sun fell on the town, and in particular an old barn kept apart from the rest of the farmed plots of land. The front of the building was missing, and for several reasons, never replaced. One such reason poked her red, scaly head out into the outside air, with the rest of her soon to follow. Dorakathen Azurakluzzelenark Nur Zulauknagh, or “Bright Penny,” looked around, noted that someone had dug up her latest attempt at planting a sheep again, and gave her wings a nice, big stretch and flap. A soft groan from within the barn caught her attention, so she turned around to face the slowly-rousing woman within.

“Oh, Gwendolyn, did I wake you? I guess it is kinda early, still.”

The young woman sat up and waved her off. “No, no,” she said, “I’m used to being up with the sun. Do dragons usually sleep later?”

“Well... I do. My mother would always head out before the sun rose, said something about making sure she’s back before humans usually tried to steal from her.” The dragoness drew in and let out a big breath, taking care to keep the fire out of it, this time. “I never knew what she meant by that. You guys are pretty friendly, and with how often the ones around her lair seemed to gift her their old, claw-marked armors, I can’t imagine any human trying to take something from her lair.”

Gwendolyn thought for a few seconds on that, opened her mouth to speak, thought better of it, and instead asked, “so, Dork, how long is this happening, again?”

Bright Penny’s mouth curled into a smile. “Oh, the kidnapping? Just a week, same as how Mom would do it.”

“The, uh, the same?” the human said, paling. While the young dragoness seemed friendly, if a bit misguided and, well, inexperienced, her mother, Bloodstained Ruby, was an entirely separate matter. If any tale of life under her claw managed to escape her grasp, it was always one of terror and bloodshed. Her lair was filled with glittering, shining treasures and adorned with colored glass as red as her scales, all gained through pillaging, extortion, or both. While nobody knew for sure, any fool would guess that, if a ransom wasn’t paid, the hostage would serve as the main course for her dinner. Gwendolyn’s mouth went dry as she looked at the cheerful dragoness with her sharp claws and sharper fangs. “How... how would Bloody Ruby...?”

The red dragon sat back on her haunches and put a paw to her chin. “Well, sometimes humans would visit her with a big pile of gold and stuff for her hoard - and now that I’ve seen how much you guys usually have on yourselves, they must’ve really liked her! - and she’d go get her kidnap-ee, and then the humans would all leave together and Mom would have a nice smile for a while. Um, and then other times, humans wouldn’t come, or they would but I guess they weren’t the ones the kidnapped human knew, because Mom would shoo them away, or claw them if they went crazy and tried to stab her. I always thought that was too strict, since her claws are half the length of their bodies while their swords were pretty small to her.”

Gwendolyn glanced around the barn, looking for an exit that the dragon would have trouble following her through. “And, what about the kidnapped human after a week of... no visitors?”

“Oh, she’d ask whether they’d like to leave or get eaten - I guess she didn’t really have patience for long-term visitors, especially seeing as how she kinda did technically kick me out of her lair eventually.” She furrowed her brow. “It was weird, though, humans could definitely go up and down that mountain, but they always seemed to get eaten. ...is that a human thing? Because I don’t think I’m up for it with you. I hope that’s not rude.”

The woman’s brain fizzled for a moment. “Um... okay, I’ll... we’ll talk later, but as long as leaving after a week is one of those options, I’m fine.”

“Of course!” The dragon nodded vigorously, then got to her feet again and made her way out of the barn before looking back. “I’m gonna go see around the town for a while. I know I don’t really have all the actual kidnapping stuff like a fancy dress for you and a pole to lean against, but I’m trying my hardest, so please don’t escape?”

Bright Penny took a few steps away, then froze, spun, and stuck her head back under the barn roof. “I mean, unless it’s an emergency, of course.”

Her fears momentarily assuaged, Gwendolyn let out a laugh. “Of course. Have fun, Dork, I’ll be right here when you get back.”

“Great! Okay, see you, Gwen!” Bright Penny trotted away - this time, without turning back - and wasn’t able to see Gwendolyn put her head in her hands, trying to process what the dragon had oh-so casually said about her mother. Instead, the dragoness hummed a wandering tune and let her feet carry her to a rather interesting-looking building.

As she approached, she was drawn to the beautiful stained-glass windows in each wall. One showed a sheaf of wheat, its opposite showed a few fish hanging by lines, and the third had a woman in a plain dress, holding a sickle in one hand and a net in the other. Bright Penny circled the building a couple of times, then took a seat in front of the fish one and stared at it, admiring the way the sun pierced through the glass, giving a strange sort of energy to the art. She moved her head back and forth, playing with her shadow on the glass.

After a few minutes, a man exited the door on the unadorned side, and peeked around the corner. “Uh, excuse me, dragon? You’re the one who’s been staying at Brown’s old barn, right?”

Bright Penny turned towards the voice, looked around for a couple of seconds, then smiled when she saw the face. “Yes, that’s me. I’m Dorakathen Azurakluzzelenark Nur Zulauknagh, nice to meet you.”

“Dora Kathen Ashoora... er, pardon me.”

“Oh! Sorry, I’m still not used to being around people who don’t speak Draconic. It means Bright Penny, but some helpful adventurers said I could be called Dork for short!”

The man looked unconvinced, but slowly stepped out from behind “cover.” He was dressed similar to many of the Clearwater residents Bright Penny had seen, though his body was less toned or worn, so she guessed he did something that didn’t require much heavy lifting. “Well, Dorakathe- uh, Dork, what brings you to our town’s temple?”

“I just thought, if I’m going to go about figuring out how to be a proper dragon, I should know more about the town I’ll be- what was that word Mom used? Not terrorizing, uh... monitoring?” She shook her head. “Anyway, I kinda got distracted, and seeing these really pretty jewels made me remember that a dragon should have a hoard, and I don’t. So, may I please have one of these?”

One helpful thing about outlandish requests is that they are superb at making one forget that the one who asked was a dragon. As a prime example, the man replied, “what? No, they’ve been part of this temple for generations,” before his brain finally caught up to the rest of her words, so he quickly added, “uh, t-terrorizing? Where does your mom do that?”

“I’m pretty good with my claws; I’m sure I could help patch up the hole,” the red dragon cheerfully replied, then caught herself. “Oh, you mean ‘part of’ as in ownership. That’s alright, then. Where can I get one, then? ...also, what’s your name? I don’t remember if you said.”

“Abraham, I’m sort of this place’s priest. I’m not sure where you’d get something that big or intricate - again, it’s been generations - but you could ask the smithy. I know he can do regular windows.” Abraham said, then took a step back. “Also, what was that thing about terrorizing?”

“Oh, yeah, my mom’s Bloodstained Ruby. I think she’s just dramatic with that, though; it’s hard to believe she causes terror, with how many presents people keep giving her. Kept. But she probably still gets them after kicking me out, too.” With a destination in mind, Bright Penny unfurled her wings and crouched, preparing to take off. “I’ll go check the smithy out, then. Thanks, Abe!”

The words “Bloodstained Ruby” and “mom” were still sinking into Abraham’s head while he watched her go. He fell back against the temple wall, breathing heavily, then ran inside to begin praying to more gods than usual.

A peaceful stroll down an empty street and one abandoned-and-therefore-free fish later, and Dork found herself at her destination. Luckily for her, a red, fire-breathing dragon was not enough to scare away the blacksmith, who insisted that he’d weathered a lot worse - and she agreed, seeing as she was going to be pretty good at dragon things and therefore easy to be worse than. Although initially dismayed that she had nothing to pay for glass with, her enthusiasm soon swayed him to teach her how to make some, herself.

“Look, I’m sure it’ll wear down eventually, and until then, having a solid boulder of glass IN the beach is a bit of a novelty,” he said, “but I must admit, that may have been the most effective way I’ve ever seen to teach someone to make sure molten glass should only exist in something that can hold it.”

Bright Penny nodded and tried again, breathing fire around a large, metal cup filled with sand. Once its contents got nice and soft, she carefully dumped it into a mold she’d carried from his workshop. It was slow to spread out, so she reached out...

“No! Don’t!” the blacksmith shouted in a panic. When she looked at him, worried, he remembered that she wasn’t just another foolish human apprentice, but rather a foolish dragon. Waving his hand, he said, “nah, you’re fine. I’d burn myself doing that, is all.”

As they waited for it to cool, the dragoness looked down at her shadow, then up to the sky. “Oh! I’ve been out awhile, I should head home soon, after a quick stop by the bakery for Gwendolyn.”

“Gwen? The baker’s daughter? Whatever for?” A tough old smith like him, he could see hanging out with a dragon. But Gwendolyn? She was closer to a proper lady - in her mannerisms, if not by her upbringing and hobbies - than near anyone else in the town. “Also, take yer glass. It’s still hot, so don’t go touching it to anything, but it oughta keep its shape, or near abouts. Wouldn’t use it for a window, but it’ll look fine.”

“Oh, I kidnapped her, so her dad’s helping me make sure she can eat right.” The dragoness lets out a rumbling laugh. “You should’ve seen her reaction to him cutting shapes into her sandwich.”

In his mind, the blacksmith went over the locations of several swords, spears, and other weaponry that might prove useful in a rescue. “Kidnapped, eh?”

“Well, I did ask her first. Then I made sure to carry her and fly away, so I’m pretty sure it still counts as a real dragon kidnapping.” Bright Penny picked up her glass in one scaly paw and looked at it. “By the way, how do I get it to be all colored like the temple has?”

The man put his weapon-finding thoughts on hold until after he talks to the baker. “Hm. Well, tell you what. I’m busy tomorrow, but come by the day after and I’ll show you.” Either way, that would give him time to organize a few good men if need be. “I’ll get the mold back, myself.”

“Okay! Thanks so much for the help. My hoard’s gonna be so pretty...” With a leap and flap of her wings, Bright Penny was airborne again, thoughts of stained-glass dragons in her mind.

Korrasami Month 2018 - The Race

Once upon a time, Atalanta was a powerful huntress that had made a vow to never marry. Surrendering to her father insistence, she offered to marry anyone who could outrun her—but those whom she overtook she speared. In one race Hippomenes was given three of the golden apples of the Hesperides by the goddess Aphrodite; when he dropped them, Atalanta stopped to pick them up and so lost the race.

Jinora closed the ancient book she was examining and sighed. After putting it back on the shelf, she pondered where to look for reading material next. Republic City Public Library had seriously taken its toll after Kuvira's attack, and to make things worse, becoming the hiding spot for a particularly vicious gang of firebending crooks reduced the amount of salvageable books and scrolls to less of a hundred.

The young master airbender looked outside through the newly-restored windows. If only they could access to all the knowledge they had in Wan Shi Tong's library... They wouldn't even need to bring the originals with them, maybe just... copy them? In some format that was not so flammable, if possible? She made a mental note to talk with Asami about that, she would probably figure out a way to manage it.

But until then, maybe visiting Wan Shi Tong's library was enough. Maybe the librarian would allow them just browsing the material. After all, the Unalaq debacle had happened years ago. And yet, she was reluctant to try. But she glanced the single shelf with all the remaining reading material they had. It was time to at least try.

She sat cross legged on the floor. The library was empty and the restoration works had managed to turn it back to its silent state. It was a good place to meditate. Better than home, even, without Ikki and Meelo interruptions. She concentrated, and in the blink of an eye there she was, in the middle of her favourite place of the spirit's world. Some knowledge-seeking foxes were startled by her apparition, but they went back to their business, and Wan Shi Tong was nowhere to be seen. Well... maybe she could just take a look to some of the books there, before she faced the scary owl spirit.

She looked around. The aisle where she had appeared was as good place as any to begin her search. The banner at the head of the aisle read "Greek mythology". Uh-huh, whatever that is, let's find out - she thought. She took a beautifully decorated volume that called her attention, it had really detailed illustrations of people - nude people in some cases, she realized, blushing - with strange-looking robes, nothing like she had seen on any of the Four Nations styles. Also, the animals, or spirits, were different to what she was used to. "Maybe 'greek' means 'fantasy'" she muttered to herself. She opened at a random page and began reading. "In Greek mythology Atalanta was an Arcadian heroine-"

"I don't care what you want, father! Just because you want a heir for Future Industries, it doesn't mean you get to decide who I marry with!"

Asami stormed off her father's office slamming the door. She was sick of it, of all the self-absorbed, full-of-themselves suitors pursuing her day and night. Sometimes it was charming, granted, but very soon, every time, she discovered that they weren't interested on how she was but what she was, a heiress. And she wasn't just that! Not to boast, but she was a brilliant engineer, a more-than-capable fighter and an excellent driver and...

"That's it!" She stopped on her tracks and went back to Hiroshi's Sato office. She opened without knocking only to find her father lost in thought.

"I'll marry... whoever beats me in the racetrack." Hiroshi's brow arched, he didn't expect that. "But if I win, you have to make those candidates of yours to stop pursuing me, and you will not ever attempt to force me into any marriage". Asami crossed her arms awaiting a response.

Hiroshi pondered for a moment. Yes, she was her best satomobiles tester, but that didn't mean she was the best driver in the world. He was starting to feel desperate with his attempts to secure his legacy, and the look in Asami's eyes made her think this was no bluff but an ultimatum.

"Very well, it will be as you wish" Asami dropped her arms as she wasn't expecting her father to agree so quickly. "But this will require some time to prepare... " He looked at the calendar in his desktop and browsed through its pages "It will be in three months from today."

Asami nodded, and started planning her practice schedule. Three months was more than enough to achieve perfection. There was no way she was going to lose this. There was just too much at stake.

"You won't believe what Huan just told me!" Opal announced stepping into the training grounds of the Air Temple Island. Bolin and Korra stopped their training session and looked at her. "My brother Wei is entering the road race to opt to Asami Sato's hand!" Bolin and Korra remained silent and exchanged an amused look. "What?" Opal exclaimed, throwing suspicious glances to both of them.

Korra shrugged and said nonchalantly "Nothing! I just thought Wei of all people wouldn't be so interested in... *ahem* ... plus isn't he a bit young for marrying?" Bolin sniggered beside her, not really helping the Avatar to get out of trouble.

Opal decided it wasn't worth to feel offended, in fact she had thought very much the same when receiving the news. "Well, it seems like Mr. Sato is trying to establish some sort of industrial empire, so he has been contacting most of the big families throughout all four nations searching for a *worthy* heir for his daughter, and that includes my own one. But apparently there is a catch, and it's that she has only agreed to marry if she is beaten in a road race. And according to this article it will take place in less than three months" She showed the newspaper in her hand to her boyfriend and Korra. Korra held the article but couldn't tear her eyes from the picture of the Future Industries heiress even if Opal continued with her explanations "But you're right, and I just think this is a last resort kind of thing for Mom trying to marry off Wei..." Opal finished sheepishly. Her mother seemed to be very open in other aspects of life, but when it came to her children she was adamant to let them live their lives freely. "Well, I'll leave you to it, sorry I interrupted your training!" and with a swift of air she flew out towards the air bisons barn.

Bolin noticed Korra was still transfixed with the newspaper article. He waved his hand in front of Korra's eyes to break the spell, but she seemed lost in thought. Then Korra raised her eyes from the article and muttered "Bolin, I think I'm in love". Bolin looked surprised to his friend, looked at the dark beauty picture in the newspaper and back to his friend. He started jumping up and down and screamed "OOOOHHHH!! This is so goophhhh mmhhh!!" Korra muffled his mouth bending a chunk of earth to silent him while shushing her excited buddy. Bolin tried to look outraged while he spitted the soil out, but he couldn't help to be happy for her. He stopped moving and putting his hand in Korra's shoulder he whispered "Okay, but you know we need a plan, right?". Korra grinned, noticing he supported her, no questions asked, and then she leaned into him, murmuring in a conspiracy tone "I think I have a solution that will work out just fine for Wei... and for me".

"The answer is no." Beifong's answer was curt, and she went back to her paperwork.

Bolin looked exasperated and tried to elaborate "But... but... How can you say no? It's a noble cause! Love! Young Love!” Bolin looked at his brother for help. The Chief of Police was actively trying to ignore them but they needed her, if they wanted to have a chance in all this craziness. Mako sighed and tried a different angle. "Chief, I agree all this... is nonsense,” Bolin frowned “but think about your nephew. He's being forced to compete for something he doesn't even want! I can't believe you agree with that".

Lin stopped writing and held the bridge of her nose. The two brothers looked at her expectantly. "All right, I'll do it! But only because you two nosy punks won't leave me alone!" Lin looked up to them, they were smiling and Bolin was tempted to initiate a hug, but realised it wasn't a good idea. The chief dismissed both with her hand, and they complied quickly before she changed her mind.

Wei had already agreed to their plan in the phone. He would train his driving skills back in Zaofu to avoid suspicion, but once in Republic City for the race event, Korra and he would swap, leaving her compete in his place. Having Chief Beifong onboard granted they wouldn't have any issue infiltrating the race, and more importantly, she would be a perfect coach for Korra's driving lessons. Everything was going very, very well.

"Brake! BRAAAKEEE!!!" Metal squeaked when bent to pull the satomobile to a stop. Korra, with her knuckles almost white on the wheel, pouted. Lin grunted, and tried to compose herself. She turned to the back of the satomobile to find Mako and Bolin, all color drained out of their faces. "This is not working, kids" the Chief of Police said without emotion. "And at this point I'm not allowing her in a car, much less in the middle of a car race! She is a hazard for anyone in her way!"

Mako ignored the Avatar indignant cry and offered "Maybe if she isn't driving?" His audience turned to him, waiting for an explanation. "I know Varrick has been working on some kind of autonomous mechanism for satomobiles, he has been blabbering about it for weeks in the press. Maybe he could put one of those in Korra's satomobile, and at least she would be less... dangerous?" Korra huffed again, but again she was ignored. The date for the race was only a few days away, and it was a fact that Korra's advances driving were mostly non-existant. For an Avatar who had managed to bend four elements, it was astounding how incapable she was to manage mechanical devices.

Bolin nodded "That might work, I'll talk to Varrick later. He owes me some favors from the times we were together in the movers business, so I think I can bring him onboard." He was getting excited again, and that made Korra abandon her pouting face, but Lin just shook her head. "If that works, that would solve the fact that Korra doesn't run anyone over - which frankly, would make my life much easier - but we also need Asami to lose, and she is a really accomplished driver. And I don't think we can tamper with Asami's car, they would find out about any attempt to sabotage."

Mako nodded in agreement, "Then we need to distract her. But how?"

"Raava, I need your help" Korra's inner voice murmured during her meditation.

The light spirit made her presence known to the Avatar, and prompted her to make her request. "Avatar Korra... What is bothering you?..."

Korra gulped. "I need to know about a human, Asami Sato... " Korra fiddled with her hands, suddenly thinking this was not such a good idea. "I need to know her weak spots... but it's for a good cause!" Korra extended her hands, trying to justify herself. The light spirit made something similar to a sigh sound, their connection had made clear what kind of good cause was pressing the Avatar to ask for her help.

"She is a builder, but she is no bender. She needs tools..." the spirit voice was getting weaker, but before disappearing Raava imprinted an image in her mind. It was a workshop... a Future Industries workshop... and inside there was a cabinet containing a box... a toolbox marked with an anagram "A.S.". And as quickly as it came, the image disappeared from Korra's mind.

Korra woke up from her meditation. She was back in her room and Mako and Bolin were looking at her with expectation. Korra cocked her head. "I'm gonna be needing... tools?"

Mako didn't feel proud. He was a cop, he was supposed to catch trespassers, not become one of them. And yet here he was, holding a cloth with a wrench, a screwdriver and a hammer belonging to Asami Sato. He handed the evidence to the Avatar, embarrassed. Korra opened the package, examined its content and hugged her friend. She knew the effort he had made to break the rules for her.

The race day had arrived. Varrick had done a good job automatising the car. They had a trial the day before and it worked seamlessly. They had even managed to make a decent mark, with Chief Beifong driving remotely. Korra put on her helmet and pulled the zipper of the overalls Wei had just taken off. Together with the scarf and gloves, nobody would notice the deceit.

She hugged a last time her two friends and a very relieved Wei, and left the locker room for the starting grid. There were six other participants, but she had sneaked into their practice and she knew they weren't rivals to her - thanks to Varrick's device, that is. Korra took the seat of her satomobile, nodded towards Chief Beifong who was half hidden in a secluded box seat, and got ready to start.

Asami Sato was the last participant to reach her car. She flipped her long, raven black hair before fitting her googles, and looked back to her competition. She smiled smugly, and sat down in her seat.

All engines roared, ready to start. Ikki held a chequered flag by its pole, and upon Hiroshi Sato nod, she waved it down, with Meelo merrily floating in a small hurricane made by himself at her side.

The satomobiles sped up, wheels rotating at a burnout before shooting off. After just a few seconds, Asami Sato red roadster was clearly in advantage of all her suitors, with Korra's silver roadster following closely.

Asami sight was focused on the track, but her peripheral vision caught a glint of something shiny in that next opponent. She frowned when she recognised one of the hammers of her personal toolbox. The other driver threw it aside to the road margin. The distraction made her slow down, allowing her adversary to take the lead.

Korra was ecstatic, the plan was working! She laughed, exhilarated, until she noticed Asami's roadster was again at her level. Korra frowned, and got ready to use her second "secret weapon". She took the screwdriver, and purposedly wiggled it for the engineer to see. Asami was alternating looks to the road and to her opponent now, and Korra smiled at the heiress gaping mouth when she realized Korra had another tool of hers in her power.

Again, Korra threw the screwdriver to the road margin, allowing herself to mouth "Oops!", very much to Asami's anger. The engineer had slowed down again, but the rage towards this... this... dirty... Beifong scumbag... made her regain her focus and push to the metal. She managed to get matched again. There was absolutely no way she was going to let herself lose to some cheater.

Korra made a long face, but she still had her last ace up the sleeve. The wrench she had in her hand looked the same quality than the other tools, but much more worn away, probably a favourite for the engineer. Again she made sure Asami was looking at her, and shook it in front of the heiress eyes.

Asami couldn't believe it. "No, not Wrenchie, how do you DARE!" She was so dumbfounded she didn't realize until she saw the other car's rear plate that she had given up so much advantage. From behind, she could see how her nemesis threw her dearest tool to the side of the road. She was fueled by her fury and hit the gas as much as she could.

Korra winced. What she saw in the rear mirror was a very VERY angered Asami speeding up. Well, she would really have to make amends afterwards. She crossed her fingers and prayed that Chief Beifong floored it as much as she could. The finish line was closing, and Asami's roadster was still a little behind. "Come on... come on..." Korra was muttering to herself now, and then, all she could see was a the chequered flag waving again, and a red blur passing her after the line. She had won. Unbelievable.

"Wooohooo!!" She cheered and threw her right arm to the air, trying to maintain her cover. When the satomobile stopped, she jumped out of her seat and started to bounce up and down.

Asami Sato was making a beeline towards her. Maybe she was no firebender, but Korra could feel fire glowing from her green eyes. She was even more beautiful in person, Korra thought. "You cheater! How did you get hold of my tools! How do you d..." Asami seemed to lose her train of thought when Korra took her helmet off. The Avatar tried her best smile, and it seemed to be working.

"You are not Wei Beifong" Asami stated puzzled. And then something made click in her head. "You're the Avatar. You're the Avatar!" This outcome was not bad after all. Asami licked her lips, smiled and flipped back her hair. "But you really are a cheater, don't think I'm forgiving you so easily"

"So... I guess me winning means we're engaged now?" asked Korra with a goofy grin plastered in her face. Asami laughed and, knowing her father was approaching them, she took the Avatar's face with her hands and kissed her.

"What do you think you're doing?"

That wasn't Hiroshi Sato's voice. Jinora blinked twice, before recognising her surroundings, and Wan Shi Tong voice. She gasped, and closed the book she had fallen asleep upon. Mac Ruaidh - Part One

The cold of the raging storm outside had nothing on the cold that invaded his veins at the news from the Ellesmeres’ cook, though he was less certain whether it was caused by the news that Geneva was dead or that her husband was thoroughly convinced her child had been fathered by another man.

Though it was wrong to curse the dead, the impulse was strong. He had known when he accepted her twisted bargain that it wouldn’t be so simple. He should have tried harder to find a way out of it without giving in to her demands. As his anger and frustration rose the chill faded and heat rose through him.

Perhaps his wits had gotten slow from lack of use. In the cave he’d had little to do but think and second guess his every move; at Ardsmuir there had been the men to think on, their welfare to negotiate and in the governor he’d found a man willing to challenge and bargain shrewdly, not to mention the opportunities to play at chess or read a bit from one of the books on the shelf. But at Helwater he had slipped into a routine that didn’t require the same mental exertions; physical exhaustion carried him to his bed at night and the relative freedom of movement––being outdoors and working but not under the eyes and guns of guards––he had given over to enjoying the simpler aspects of his life, pushing aside the harsh terms of his servitude. In playing the part of a mere groom perhaps some of the simplicity he played at had seeped into his mind and impeded his faculties.

How else could he explain the apparent ease with which Geneva––hardly more than a lass––had gotten the upper hand on him enough to force his compliance?

Jamie closed his eyes, took a deep breath and let it out slowly, urging his mind towards quiet. Half a dozen ideas for what he could have done or said differently in the field that day were fighting with each other as though settling on which would have been most effective might change his current situation.

But what exactly was his situation? The lad was his by blood but Ellesmere’s by law and as far as appearances were concerned.

The rising heat of Jamie’s anger cooled suddenly as something within him sank. He had a son, another child he wouldn’t have a chance to see or raise or know. Well, perhaps Ellesmere would let the lad visit Helwater from time to time; the Dunsanys were still the babe’s family. Jamie might be able to see him from a distance, which was more than he’d had of either of his other two children. Lord that she might be safe, she and the child , he prayed silently, habitually, and then with a sigh added, And may Lady Geneva rest peacefully.

A maid came scurrying into the kitchen with wide eyes. “Your master wants you right away,” she urged Jamie and Jeffries. “And he wants you to come armed.”

Jeffries ran to fetch the pistols from the carriage but Jamie urged the maid to show him to Lord Dunsany immediately; if arms were indeed needed he shouldn’t have trouble improvising with something at hand or at least stalling until Jeffries could join them.

Ellesmere and Dunsany were both red-faced from screaming as he entered and looked about to come to blows.

“Your daughter was a whore and I’ll not have her bastard bearing my name,” Ellesmere hollered. “I’m getting rid of him one way or another.”

“My daughter was no WHORE!” Dunsany screamed, taking a swing at Ellesmere who easily dodged it. “And you’ll not shame my grandson with your lies!”

“He’s no son of mine, of that I’m sure,” Ellesmere taunted Dunsany, “so that ought to tell you all you need to know of your daughter and her character.”

Jamie felt the blood drain from his face but it had no effect on his legs. He inserted himself between the two men saying nothing.

“We had an arrangement when I agreed to marry that slut and I don’t care––”

Jamie gave Ellesmere a shove so that he fell back into a cushioned chair. Both he and Dunsany were startled into silence by the action.

“Have ye no heard that it’s rude to speak ill of the dead?” Jamie said with a quiet calm that made Ellesmere go pale. “There’s a child lost its mother and parents lost their child. Whatever betrayal ye may be feeling, have a care for their grief at least or ye dinna deserve to call yerself a gentleman.”

The color returned to Ellesmere’s face in a rush of red but he simply clenched his fists in his chair as Jamie continued to stare down at him from his physically imposing height.

“Tha–thank you, MacKenzie,” Dunsany muttered weakly behind him. “I’ve sent my wife to fetch the child. We’ll be leaving with him this afternoon and––”

“No,” Ellesmere said with cold fury. “You’ll not be leaving this house with that child and playing the gracious grieving parents offering to raise him for me because I’m too distraught or whatever bullshit reason you give the gossip-mongers. I never touched your daughter and I’ll not have her bastard son as my heir.”

“I’ll take him.” The words were out of Jamie’s mouth before he’d even thought them and once again both Ellesmere and Dunsany were shocked into silence.

Swallowing and turning to begin pacing, Jamie was aware of the men’s attention on him while he scrambled to piece his impulse together into a plan.

“I’ll take the bairn and raise him as mine––a lad got on a kitchen maid that left and sent him to me rather than raise him herself,” Jamie said quickly. “As far as Lady Geneva goes, her bairn died and can be buried with her.” He turned to Ellesmere. “It frees ye of having a living heir ye dinna want and garners ye a bit more sympathy than a scandal would––or would ye rather word of yer… inabilities spread along with yer insinuations about yer late wife?”

Ellesmere glared at Jamie who stood holding the older man’s eye without flinching. He was vaguely aware of the throbbing pulse in the man’s throat, a subtle fluttering movement that was slightly out of sync with a twitch in the corner of the man’s right eye. Ellesmere blinked and Jamie let the breath he’d been holding go then turned to Dunsany.

“I ken it’s no how ye want the lad to come to yer house,” Jamie said with gentle understanding, a tone of voice he’d used frequently on skittish horses. “But he’ll be near ye and ye’ll have a chance to see him even if he canna know the truth of who ye are.”

“You propose to raise an infant on your own while working as a stablehand…” Dunsany summarized with obvious skepticism.

“I’m sure my employer will prove sympathetic to my plight having so recently lost a beloved child of his own. None would question such an impulse under the circumstances,” Jamie reasoned. “But… he would be mine. I’d have the final say over him.”

Dunsany’s mouth was drawn tight and grim but there was exhaustion and resignation in it too.

“Why? Why would you do such a thing?” Dunsany asked.

Jamie inhaled deeply and let it out slowly. “My wife,” he said quietly, his voice barely managing not to break at the mention of Claire, at the thought of discussing her with these people, of bringing her memory into the light of day to be gawked at when he preferred keeping her to himself, cherished and protected. “My wife and I wanted… We lost our first at birth. It took time for her to get with child again… and then I lost them both together… I love my wife still and dinna mean ever to wed again… but it pains me to think I’ll no have a chance to be a father. A child without a father ought to have one and if I’m no to be father to my wife’s children, I should like to act as father to such a child.”

“If you want the bloody bastard you can have him,” Ellesmere said, unmoved by Jamie’s display of emotion. “I just want all of you out of my house and out of my life as soon as possible.”

But Jamie’s focus remained on Dunsany and the watery redness of his eyes. When Dunsany blinked his head moved in a subtle nod.

“William?” Lady Dunsany asked as she appeared at the door to the library with the blanket wrapped infant in her arms and Jeffries at her side, the pistols from the carriage clearly visible.

“Jeffries, those won’t be necessary,” Dunsany said, his voice thick but firm.

Dunsany crossed to his wife and whispered about the proposed arrangement. Lady Dunsany was shaking her head vehemently and clutching the tiny bundle to her tightly before Dunsany was even half-way through. Her eyes darted to Jamie, pleading, but then caught Ellesmere’s hard and unsympathetic expression. Dunsany moved to take the child from her arms but she shook him off and took the first few steps towards Jamie, her hold on the child never loosening.

“He’s called William,” she said firmly.

“Louisa,” Dunsany began to say but she interrupted him.

“It’s William; she gave him that name and I think it’s the least MacKenzie can do to call him by the name his mother gave him before she died.” The grief in her voice was strong but lent that strength to her resolve.

“Aye,” Jamie whispered looking to reassure the grieving grandmother. “William is a good strong name for the lad. My older brother was called William. May I hold him?”

With tears streaking down her cheeks, Lady Dunsany brushed the blanket aside so that she could look at the face of her sleeping grandson and trail a finger down his cheek before yielding him to Jamie’s large hands and strong, solid arms.

The child didn’t seem to weigh a thing and yet for the first time in more than a decade, Jamie felt as though his feet had a solid hold on the ground. The baby’s ears stuck out a little and his shut eyes appeared to slant a bit––nothing that blatantly suggested the child in his arms was his by blood to anyone in the room aside from him––but he couldn’t help swallowing against a lump the observation created in his throat. Claire had told him that Faith had those features when she’d held her; had they looked like this? The lad’s hair was darker than his own, promised to be a rich brown like his mother’s… like Claire’s.

The other people in the room faded from Jamie’s awareness as he gently rocked the sleeping bairn and made his way closer to the warmth of the fire; it was just him and his son. Had the child Claire carried with her through the stones been born with her hair, or his? Had that child looked like this child? Closing his eyes and focusing on the warmth of the small, fragile body in his arms, Jamie could almost convince himself that he was standing before the hearth in the laird’s room at Lallybroch with Claire resting in the bed behind him, that this son in his arms was somehow one of the many yearned for but unborn children he was supposed to have had with Claire in that life they were supposed to have lived together.

“Fàilte mo mhac,” he said quietly then looked up and around until he spotted what he was looking for on Jeffries. He crossed and had the knife out of the paralyzed coachman’s belt.

“What are you doing?” Lady Dunsany screeched, similarly frozen as her eyes went wide seeing a blade so close to the baby.

But Jamie ignored her. William was sleeping securely and oblivious in the crook of Jamie’s right arm while he held the knife tight in that same hand and used his teeth to pull up the sleeve of his left arm so that nothing was in the way of that hand. The middle finger bent towards his palm and lightly pressed at the faint ‘C’ at the base of his thumb before he flexed the hand flat and guided the point of the knife a little further below the old scar. Blood of my blood and bone of my bone. I think he’s trying to get me fired.”        “That son of a bitch!”       “He might not be, but I’m pretty sure he’s giving me Linda’s work.”        “I hate when coworkers don’t pull their weight. There’s a few of them here.” Kira glanced at the new waitress, who was flirting with one of the customers.       “So, really tell me how the audition went,” Jezzica said.       Kira sighed, “They said I did good, but…”      “But?” Jezzica asked.      “Don’t you just love to see her fail?” The monster’s hot, moist breath filled Jezzica’s ear.      “They also said I didn’t look right for the part.”      “What does that mean?” Jezzica swatted at the creature, as if it were a fly.      “Given the role, it most likely means I don’t look like the other girls in the assemble. But it could just mean that I’m ugly,” Kira said.      Jezzica’s creature howled with laughter and delight.      “You’re not ugly. Maybe you’re too short?”       Kira glared at her for a second, then laughed. “Maybe that’s it.”      “Also, you do have a young face. Maybe they think you look too young for the part?”     “Yeah, actually that could be it. The role is meant for a twenty-something.”     “Then that’s definitely it. You don’t even look eighteen!”     “Oh, stop it, you.”     Jezzica gathered her purse, and Kira followed suit.     “I think we should go, or Darla will forcefully evict us,” Jezzica said.     “She’s bit of a sourpuss, but she’s pretty fair at dividing up the good tippers.”   Kira waved goodbye to Darla as they left the diner.      Jezzica and Kira walked along the busy street in silence. Cars honked at each other, kids screamed, people yelled into their phones, and someone blasted Spanish rap. The sky was dark blue, and there were no stars out. There were never any stars, just the orange glow of the street lamps. The monsters, that followed people, created black voids which swallowed up the light and sound. Jezzica’s own creature followed behind a step or two. It interacted with the others: sometimes hissing or growling at them, and sometimes nodding.  The people rushing along the street walked pass, and through, the creatures without so much of a glance.       “You know it really makes me feel better to talk to you,” Kira said.       “How so?”      “You always make me laugh, or look at things from a different angle.”      “Well at least someone is laughing at me.”     “Not at you…you always avoid or deflect. Even when I know something is going on. And trust me I can tell something is up. You’re eyes are even more distant than normal. So please tell me what is wrong. I want to help.”      A woman, pushing a baby-carriage, strolled pass Kira. The mother had a similar creature to Jezzica; it was black, oozing, with clawed hands, and sharp teeth; but it lacked legs. It clung to the woman’s shoulders, and left behind black globs on the sidewalk. Someone stepped into the slime, and it started crawling up their leg.      It whispered into the woman’s ear, “You’re a bad mother. You should just kill yourself. You should just kill your baby, and then yourself. Push in front of the truck.”      “She’ll never believe you,” Jezzica’s creature hissed.      “It’s nothing really,” Jezzica said, “I’m just stressed from work.”      “Is that really all?”       Jezzica met Kira’s eyes, and nodded.      “Then we should have a girls day this weekend. I’m not working on Sunday. We can order some pizza, have some wine, watch bad movies,” Kira said.       “I-I’m not sure. I might be doing laundry.”       “Oh, ok. Let me know, ok?”      “Yeah, I’ll let you know.”       Kira went into her apartment building, leaving Jezzica alone in the sea of monsters. ***      Lucifer dragged himself up another few inches, and the force which had been pulling him down released. The beating of his wings lifted him, and he let go of the Pit’s wall. His back wings pumped, and he soared higher with every movement of his wings, until he reached the mouth of the Pit. He landed on the floor of Hell, and took in his surroundings.      The area closest to the Pit was a desert of black sand, mountains loomed down to the right; a dark unfriendly, unsettled ocean raged behind him; far off to theft was a dilapidated city. The city was a series of high rises, towers, and castles; and appeared to be an amalgamation of metropolitan and ancient ruins. Metal clashed with wood; glass cut through thatched roofs; asphalt dripped onto stone. In the middle of the maze like streets, there was a large edifice made from different styles of buildings stacked on top of each other.  Despite the haphazard construction, the building held still. A stream of red fire spewed from the apex of the tower. A thick smog hung about twenty feet in the air, meaning Satan could not be too far.       A pack of Hell Hounds prowled the desert; there blood-red eyes locked onto Lucifer as he emerged from the Pit. He stretched his arms and wings, then ran towards the beasts. They snarled and charged at him, baring their sharp white teeth. He collided with the creatures, who jumped on him eagerly. Each pushing the other to get to Lucifer.        “Calm down boys. There’s plenty of me to go around.”        Lucifer scratched the belly of the hound as it rolled on its back, and kicked its hind-leg. Several others were licking him. He petted them for a few minutes, before standing up, and putting his hand out for them to stop.       “Good boys, now where is that traitor Satan?”        The dogs put their noses in the air, and sniffed; then, turned toward the tall black tower, with the red flames coming out of the top. Lucifer unfurled his wings like two black feathery sails. He took flight, rising above the black fog. His eyes fixed on the highest room in Satan’s tower. The Hell Hounds howled, and barked, chasing after Lucifer until they could no longer see him.

Introduction 

Raise your hand if you’re in complete and utter shock that A) kids are back in school B) you’re seeing PSLs in your Instagram feed AND C) your alma mater’s first football game has already happened? Whether we’re ready or not, fall is just a few weeks away… or perhaps already here if you consider the PSL’s arrival the harbinger of fall. Be honest, have you ordered one yet?!

With this colorful season and the end of the year clearly in sight, things like your final 3x3 check-in and 2018 planning should definitely be on your radar! Don’t forget to carve out time to thoughtfully prepare for those meetings and plans. When feeling tired or a bit burnt out, I often remind myself of Mark Twain’s wise words, “the secret of getting ahead is getting started.”

On that note, let’s dive in!

1. Google Announces ARCore

Google has been involved in augmented reality pursuits for some time. If you rewind all the way back to 2014, Google introduced Project Tango, at that time, one of the first augmented reality computing platforms. Although producing quit a bit of buzz and being used in an array of impressive creative applications, the focus once placed on Project Tango is now shifting to ARCore, which simply put, “will deliver AR capabilities to Android smartphones at a scale Tango was never able to reach.”

Google’s newly announced AR pursuit will operate almost entirely like Project Tango, but will be available on smart phones (Pixel and Galaxy S8 currently). Tango will be for Google’s high-end capabilities while ARCore will serve as an everyday AR platform on mobile.

Here are the 3 components of ARCore you need to know. 

1) Motion tracking – “which estimates a phone’s relative location based on internal sensors and video footage — so you can pin objects in one place and walk around them. “

2) Environmental Understanding – detection of flat services by use of the camera.

3) Light Estimation – “helps virtual props cast accurate shadows and otherwise fit in with their surroundings.”

Now, if the timing of all this is interesting to you, your instincts are correct. As the Verge stated, “Google is under obvious pressure to compete with Apple��s lightweight version of AR (ARKit), which has produced a small wave of clever experiments since its announcement in June.”

Apple has one big leg up on Google at this point; their anticipated ARKit is about to be released on iOS 11 to millions and millions of Apple loving consumers, who have most likely been eagerly anticipating the iPhone’s 10th anniversary.

2. Microsoft Buys into Blockchain

“A growing number of enterprises are investing in blockchain as a secure and transparent way to digitally track the ownership of assets across trust boundaries and to collaborate on shared business processes, opening up new opportunities for cross-organizational collaboration and imaginative new business models.” – Mark Russinovich, CTO, Microsoft Azure.

Interest in blockchain technologies is higher than ever, but there are legitimate reasons why companies are hesitant to adopt this type of technology. Issues like latency, performance, confidentiality, and required processing power have been major stumbling blocks for business. Although blockchain currently works well for a group of “untrusted actors,” that’s not the same transaction dynamic as enterprise business. Microsoft wants to solve the issues mentioned above by making blockchain technology “more suitable for the enterprise” ergo… the announcement of Coco!

Microsoft has created a product of sorts that will help bring blockchain to the enterprise. See this PR statement from their website, “Microsoft is committed to bringing blockchain to the enterprise—and is working with customers, partners, and the blockchain community to continue advancing its enterprise readiness. Our mission is to help companies thrive in this new era of secure multi-party computation by delivering open, scalable platforms and services that any company—from ledger startups to retailers to health providers to global banks—can use to improve shared business processes.”

The Coco framework, “an open-sourced system,” first works “by replacing the tedious proof of work computation with trusting submissions to the ledger because they come from a ‘trusted execution environment’ (TEE) secured by silicon.”

In English, that means Microsoft has figured out a way for blockchains to process transactions much faster by introducing a TEE (Trusted Execution Environment). Coco also adds a layer of confidentiality on top of the ledger so that “other suppliers cant’s see the orders you placed with another supplier.” 

To give you an example of how much faster transactions can happen on Coco, let’s look at some numbers. “In one test using the Ethereum ledger in Coco, the network delivered 1,500-1,600 transactions per second with latency between 100-200 milliseconds – far faster than Ethereum itself running on the same hardware.”

Now Coco is a framework, not its own ledger, meaning that it uses other ledgers (and is compatible with them all). Blockchain giant Etherium as well as many companies (J P Morgan Chase for example) are already porting their ledgers onto Coco. Microsoft will open source Coco’s code in early 2018, with a technical whitepater and demonstrations available now. (see here!)

3. Fall + Pumpkin Spice News 

Before October is here, before the leaves begin changing colors, EVEN before the clocks turn back… oh yes, it’s pumpkin mania. As the pumpkin obsession sets in for fall, Fast Company went as far to say that “pumpkin spice may just be the driving force behind the autumn economy.” 

With pumpkin spice products growing in number each year, this autumn cash cow is more than just a trend but increasingly becomes a cultural icon for an entire season. 

Starbucks, historically strict on when beloved seasonal drinks are offered in stores, had many store managers go completely rogue in late August by beginning to sell PSLs early. Several social posts of happy customers with their beloved drink as well as a very mysterious Starbucks Facebook live video began somewhat of a PSL panic.  

About a month ago, Starbucks employees even started a Reddit page support group to help deal with their fears surrounding customers who asked too early and were told no.

As I hope most of you are chuckling to yourselves or making #basic jokes to the colleague sitting next to you, let us ask some more serious questions.

If, in fact, pumpkin is such a phenomenon, how does your client play into it? How can the brands you work on play into cultural moments like this? On a more psychological note, what does this pumpkin spice craze teach us about culture and society?

1. Warby Parker Owned the Eclipse

When brands foresee a cultural moment and perfectly insert themselves in an educational, helpful, or even comical way, consumers respond.

Warby Parker, the innovative glasses company already invested in eyes throughout the US, did a nation-wide campaign leading up to and on the day of the Great American Eclipse. They educated consumers on what an eclipse was, how it would affect your eyes, and even sent out catalogs with DIY pinhole projectors so that consumers could easily protect their eyes while enjoying a historic viewing of the solar eclipse.  On a microsite created for the eclipse, Warby Parker had unique content, educational information, a downloadable link to make your own pinhole projector as well as an opportunity to win a trip to their Nashville store for a path of totality viewing.

On the day of the eclipse, it became quite clear that it was in fact not only a scientific event but a media and brand event as well. 

Similar to the questions posed above, how can your clients embrace moments like this? What about this campaign did you think was smart?

2. The KFC Escape Room

Escape rooms are having a moment. From a cultural trend to the brand stage, these real life adventures have the power to transport consumers to another reality – giving them an experience to remember.

With many of KFC’s employees being millennials, their staff is increasingly screen-obsessed and therefore more difficult to train due to lack of attention. In a clever marketing stunt/real life employee training program, KFC created an escape room that in VR teaches those who participate to fry chicken the KFC way.

This ingenious creative technology work was designed for the Oculus platform and had the trainees master the five-step process before allowing them to “escape” the VR escape room. With a creepy picture of Colonel Sanders haunting the room and horror-like music playing, the desire to learn quickly and get out of there is very present.

The agency design director said, “"What excites us is experimenting with new tools and mediums to tell stories. VR became an obvious choice to create an immersive experience that teaches trainees how to make KFC's Original Recipe. The escape room concept builds on the pure training and utility of the experience into something that's also entertaining and connected to KFC's iconic founder."

1. QR Codes as a Tour Guide

QR codes are so 2004 right? Think again.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board is trying to reignite the spark of interest within Hong Kong’s business district. Despite the district’s business-like appearance, there are many “hidden treasures, like temples, galleries and street food.”

By creating four different explorative walking routes around the business district (renamed “Old Town Central”) and having QR codes strategically placed through the route, an educational and entertaining tour was born. By scanning the QR codes (an easy task for all ages since the technology is not new), tour walkers would be brought to a web page giving them information about the spot and providing insight on the history and culture of the area. Now, QR codes aren’t the prettiest to look at, right? No worries there, each one is “art-inspired” creating tea pot of temple inspired codes.

Depending on interest, explorers could go on Tasting Hong Kong, Crazy for Art, Treasure Hunt, or Time Traveler, and by the names of each tour, you can most likely guess the type of tour.

Why feature such an ordinary technology in the Technology section of this session? Because often times budgets are tight and the reason for strategically using technology doesn’t have to be to impress everyone by being the first, but simply by being the most pratical or helpful.

What technology could your clients use to help or be more useful to their consumers that may not seem flashy, but it’s just plain brilliant?!

2. Alexa’s new Today in Music feature

Alexa (as well as other AI home devices) is great at giving you a quick news recap as you sip your coffee in the morning, making you feel up to speed and ready to go! What about other things to stay on top of? Like music! 

Amazon has launched “Today in Music” which will provide daily updates regarding news in music, events in your area, releases, and music-related Prime and Unlimited offerings. For those thinking music trivia is a nice add-on, it has that too.

In addition, Alexa can now play mood music. So you can say for example, “Alexa, play classic rock for a dinner party.” And she’ll do it! Teaching consumers that they can tell a technology an emotion or setting, and it’ll react accordingly is very interesting movement in human expectations of AI.

This month we’re going to take a look at the current state of smart home technology and where it may be headed in the future. Specifically though, we’ll discuss how technology in our homes is “rewiring the habits and rituals of home life.” As you well know, anything that is shifting the attitudes and expectations of consumers is valuable information for our clients’ business.

Before we dive into this hot topic, name one home tech device or service that you use on the reg. Has one become a part of a habit or ritual? (wifi doesn’t count!)

Who has more connected devices in their home? Do a quick count check!

Current State of Smart Home ->

What is the state of the smart home right now? Despite cost and security concerns, this area of technology continues to grow at a rapid rate. Take a look at some of these numbers! 

In the UK, 52% of consumers own some form of connected device, and 30% intend to buy a connected device in the coming year (Deloitte, 2016).

By 2020, there will be 20.4 billion connected things in use globally, up from 8.4 billion this year (Gartner, 2017).  

In the US, 86% of millennials (aged 23 to 36) would be willing to pay more for a home with smart extras (Construction Dive, 2016). 

However, in the UK, 48% of consumers think that connected products are too expensive, with that figure rising to 53% among 18- to 34-year-olds (Deloitte, 2016)

There's a growing market for lower-priced smart home devices. In May 2017, Ikea tapped into this by announcing plans to begin selling its own cheaper range of app-controlled lightbulbs, saving consumers money on electricity bills and smart home upgrades.

In the US, 73% of millennial women see smart home technology as a way to protect their homes (TecHome Builder, 2016). 

Two-thirds of global consumers are very concerned about smart home data being hacked by cybercriminals.

From pure #’s to price and then of course safety, there are a variety of factors one has to examine before proceeding with purchasing or entering the home tech space.

First we’re going to look at categories of home tech that are buzzing right now, but then look to how the home will evolve.

With focuses on “anticipatory, contextual and intuitive” tech, the future smart home will be like an assistant that enhances whatever mood you’re in or comes alongside you to accomplish whatever task you wish.

Want to save money on your heat bill? Done. Want to relax after a long day? Easy.

What are ways this will happen?

1) Sensor Shortcut – items in the future will be able to turn ordinary objects into smart devices by plug-in sensors that detect status. In the future, there will be more ways to track usage and habits by means of status throughout your home.

2) Butler for All – everyone wants their own Carson, right? With Chatbots and AI becoming increasingly more sophisticated, behavior tracking and coordinating between say, watering the lawn and weather patterns would be easily done. 3) Enhanced Accessibility – for anyone that has beloved grandparents or elderly parents or perhaps a family member with special needs, navigating the home is difficult without the help of another. In the future we’re going to see more and more technology that helps accessibility and eases the pressure of caretakers.

In closing, innovation always proceeds cultural change. Just think of the 10th anniversary of the iPhone we’re about to experience/celebrate. Think of the world and culture before that innovation!

This is the blockchain startup app that is projected to change the way regular smartphone users can interact with the blockchain network. From receiving over $100 million (equivalent in Ethereum) in first round ICO funding, this app is considered one of the next big innovations to hit the mobile world.
