Whump List: Gintama
Character: Sakata Gintoki (+ few bonus ones)
DISCLAIMER: Gintama is predominately a gag anime. Therefore, most of the earlier episodes (1~100) and a few later ones are mostly comedic in nature, but the whump is still there. Also, I've excluded some hits and bleeds that are purely used in a comedic fashion (such as Gintoki being thrown off a high story building to dispose of a bomb in ep. 5, or getting stuck in an elevator in ep. 174) unless they are part of an arc, otherwise we'd be here for a while. This also means that the episodes rarely have any aftermath, especially outside of arcs. I've added whatever aftermath I saw, but don't expect injuries to stick for longer than a couple of episodes at best.
This post will be extremely long.
Additional notes: i) I've added each arc name for easier viewing, ii) I haven't added the season numbers since Gintama is counted as an overall series, despite having multiple separate seasons (although, I have added the name of the season in which the episodes appear, e.g. "Gintama°" to refer to S4), iii) some episodes with no whump have been added as to not break up arcs, iv) some timestamps have been added between square parenthesis, v) the format used is for easier browsing, hopefully it holds true for there are many things to scroll through, vi) episodes with a red colouring are to indicate some whump moments I highly recommend watching, vii) I've added some extra characters (like Hijikata Toshiro) here and there because it's good whump and I'm definitely not making another list.

(Now this is the final one) Top 10 Gintaka moments
Arranged chronologically because it was too difficult to choose. Spoilers ahead.
1. Childhood glimpses
Beyond detailed backstories, Sorachi treated us to brief glimpses of the relationships between Gintoki, Takasugi, and Katsura during their time as children in Shouka Sonjuku. These panels showed Takasugi’s frustration at losing to Gintoki and being teased about his height, Katsura occasionally playing the mediator, and Takasugi's attempts to get back at Gintoki by annoying him in return (chs. 523, 519, 676, 591, 703).
2. Partners in crime
When Gintoki, Katsura, and Sakamoto set out to aid Takasugi, Sakamoto reminisced about the experiences they shared during the Joui War. He recognizes how close Gintoki and Takasugi are, being partners in crime but at the same time getting on each other's nerves and fighting all the time. We would later learn that it was something they loved to do, which may be why everyone who saw them is shown smiling (ch. 557).
3. Heaven
While fighting with the Kiheitai, Takasugi has a flashback of being wounded on the battlefield during the Joui War, and when he lost hope and looked to the heavens, he didn’t see a place to rest peacefully but instead saw the backs of his comrades fighting. He thinks of this while remembering Gintoki protecting him, which could be interpreted as Gintoki being like heaven for him in a way (ch. 639).
4. Watching him from afar
Before their famous meeting at the festival, the first time Takasugi sees Gintoki after 10 years is when he apparently went to meet Gengai, who was his ally in the terrorist attack he wanted to perpetrate against the Shogun, only to see the old man with the Yorozuya. This implies that Takasugi purposefully sought out Gintoki to have an exchange with him after such a long time (ch. 30).
5. Alone
When Itou Kamotarou allies with the Kiheitai with the intention of fracturing the Shinsengumi from within, he has an encounter with Takasugi where he reveals that he seeks recognition. However, Takasugi is able to point out that he just feels lonely. Later, when Bansai tells him that Gintoki said what he wants to protect hasn’t changed, Takasugi quickly becomes upset. This ties the two scenes together and shows how Takasugi thinks Gintoki no longer understands him (chs. 165, 168).
6. Unpacking gag panels
There were a couple of interesting occasions when Sorachi decided to use Takasugi for gags before his big fight against Gintoki. One instance involved Takasugi sending Gintoki a New Year’s card, either just breaking the 4th wall or mocking Gintoki after his vow to cut him down (or both). Another gag occurs in Gintoki’s imagination, where he envisions Takasugi avoiding contact in a ridiculous manner, not particularly bothered by the idea of him actually showing up and having to follow through on his earlier vow. Both moments suggest that Gintoki and Takasugi didn’t truly hate each other, despite how it might’ve initially appeared at that point in the manga (chs. 294, 453).
7. The same scent
Takasugi and Kamui meet as part of a Harusame plan where they’ve to kill each other. Before striking, Kamui notes that Takasugi has the same “scent” as someone he knows. Surprisingly, Takasugi immediately realizes that Kamui is referring to Gintoki, acknowledging their lingering similarities. Takasugi also seems aware of Kamui’s intent to kill Gintoki but doesn’t take it seriously, probably because he trusts that he’ll not die (ch. 310).
8. Last glance
After their climactic battle, Gintoki and Takasugi share a moment of mutual understanding. They openly acknowledge their bond as comrades and disciples of Shouyou, choosing to protect each other in a critical moment. While being aided by Kagura and Kamui, the two exchange a final glance before parting ways once again, contrasting their previous encounter, where they passed each other without acknowledgment (ch. 523).
9. Looking for Takasugi
Following their encounter at the ruins of Shouka Sonjuku and running away from Hijikata, Gintoki begins searching for Takasugi using a hilariously terrible drawing he himself made as a reference. He eventually meets Matako and Henpeita, who question him about Takasugi’s fate. Gintoki reassures them that he isn’t dead but reveals little else. At this point, Gintoki sees Takasugi as a friend and a fellow disciple of Shouyou, which motivates his efforts to join him despite Takasugi’s resistance (ch. 675).
10. Reason for world destruction
While escaping, Gintoki teases “Takasugi” about his antics. Feeling ignored after getting no response (and being so accustomed to provoking an immediate reaction) he tugs on his hair like a child seeking attention, suggesting it’s something he’s likely done more than once. Believing Takasugi to be bald, instead of making fun of him like he has done with other characters in the same situation, he tries to pump him up, encouraging him to shout out his catchphrase to boost his confidence, only to discover it was someone else wearing a wig (ch. 685).
Bonus' bonus: Magic trick
I couldn't leave out this silly gag that Sorachi drew on an extra page, where he offers a non-canon comedic moment between Gintoki and Takasugi. It acts as a lighthearted breather after their intense battle, providing a glimpse of the humor they might’ve shared in less serious situations (ch. 521+).
Part (1) (2) (3) (4) (Bonus)
#You may notice that 3 and 5 are repeated in previous posts#That's because I rearranged a couple of the tops#Now “Another” (2) and “One more” (3) have a new entry in the 3rd position if you wanna check it out!#I intended this to be more of a bonus but I ended up with another top 10 lmao#Is this how Sorachi felt when he was trying to finish the series?#But now I do think it's going to be the last one with manga moments at least#I've been saving some stuff to make a top of moments from the anime or other media but that's gonna be... next year 😂#Gintama#Sakata Gintoki#Takasugi Shinsuke#gintaka#takagin#I can write#Top 10 Gintaka moments#my post

hello i hope you're well! for when the time comes that you'll be open for requests could i put in one about how gintoki and katsura (separate) would feel about the kiss marks left behind from their s/o's lipstick/gloss? Would they be embarrassed, would they Like it, would it be a turn on, that sort of thing (bonus idea what about an s/o who likes receiving kisses from paako and zurako 🫣)
thank you ♡!!
A/N: I am seriously hoping that this didn’t get as bad as I think it did.🙃
Ft: Katsura Kotarō & Sakata Gintoki, bonus ➵ Pako & Zurako (Gintama).
Katsura Kotarō
➵ Unlike Gintoki, Katsura finds the kiss marks left by his s/o's lipstick or gloss to be quite attractive. He loves showing them off to his friends and boasting about how great his s/o is.
➵ Katsura is also quite affectionate with his s/o, but in a more reserved and gentlemanly way. He likes holding their hand and giving them chaste kisses on the cheek.
➵ When his s/o kisses him on the neck, Katsura finds it very sensual and romantic. He likes the feeling of their lips on his skin and often tilts his head to give them better access.
➵ Katsura is a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to relationships. He believes in courtship and chivalry, and likes to treat his s/o like royalty.
➵ However, he's not opposed to a bit of adventure in the bedroom. Katsura enjoys trying out new positions and techniques with his s/o, as long as it's done with love and respect.
➵ Katsura is a very creative person, and he likes to express his love for his s/o through art and poetry. He's not the best artist or poet, but his s/o always appreciates the effort.
➵ When his s/o kisses him on the lips, Katsura likes to take things slow and savor the moment. He often closes his eyes and lets himself get lost in the sensation.
➵ Katsura also loves giving his s/o small gifts and surprises to show how much he cares. He likes to hide little notes or trinkets around their apartment for them to find.
➵ Despite his reserved nature, Katsura has a bit of a wild side. He enjoys going out with his s/o.
You lean in to kiss Katsura on the neck, your lips leaving behind a mark of your lipstick. You feel his body shiver slightly under your touch, and you smile to yourself, knowing how much he enjoys this.
"Is that a new shade of lipstick?" Katsura asks, turning his head to look at you with a gentle smile.
"Yeah, it is. Do you like it?" You reply, tracing your finger along the mark on his neck.
"I do," he says, his voice softening. "I find it quite attractive, actually."
You feel your cheeks flush at his words, and you lean in to kiss him again, this time pressing your lips a bit harder against his skin. Katsura lets out a quiet sigh, tilting his head to give you better access.
"You know, I think I like this more than I thought I would," he says, his hand moving to caress your cheek.
"Really? I'm glad," you reply, feeling a warmth spread through your body at his touch.
Katsura pulls you closer to him, his other hand resting on your waist. You feel his lips brush against your ear as he whispers, "I love you, my dear."
You smile, feeling your heart swell with love for this reserved and gentlemanly man who makes you feel so cherished. You lean in to give him a chaste kiss on the cheek, and he returns the gesture, holding your hand tightly in his.
As you both stand there, wrapped up in each other's embrace, you feel a sense of contentment wash over you. This is where you belong, in Katsura's arms, leaving your mark on his neck and his heart.
Sakata Gintoki
➵ Gintoki is a bit self-conscious about the kiss marks left by his s/o's lipstick or gloss, but he tries to play it cool by acting like he doesn't care. However, deep down, he finds it a bit embarrassing.
➵ On the other hand, Gintoki really enjoys leaving kiss marks on his s/o's skin, especially if it makes them blush or giggle.
➵ When his s/o kisses him on the neck, Gintoki finds it really ticklish, but he tries to hold back his laughter to avoid looking too vulnerable.
➵ Despite his reputation as a womanizer, Gintoki is actually quite shy when it comes to initiating physical contact with his s/o. He often waits for them to make the first move.
➵ However, once he gets going, Gintoki is very affectionate and loves cuddling with his s/o. He especially likes nuzzling his face into their hair.
➵ Gintoki is a bit of a romantic at heart, but he often hides it behind his sarcasm and cynicism. He secretly loves watching cheesy romance movies and reading sappy love stories.
➵ When his s/o kisses him on the lips, Gintoki likes to deepen the kiss and explore their mouth with his tongue. He finds it very intimate and passionate.
➵ Gintoki also loves leaving little love notes for his s/o, either on paper or on their phone. He enjoys coming up with witty and humorous messages to make them smile.
➵ Whenever his s/o is feeling down or stressed out, Gintoki likes to give them gentle massages to help them relax. He's surprisingly good at it!
➵ Finally, Gintoki is a big fan of role-playing in the bedroom. He enjoys pretending to be a different character or trying out new scenarios with his s/o.
You sit at the bar, sipping on your cocktail, while Gintoki nurses his glass of sake next to you. You couldn't resist leaving a few lipstick marks on his cheek earlier, as a sign of your affection. But you notice he seems a bit self-conscious about them, even though he tries to act cool and nonchalant.
As you chat and laugh, you lean in and plant a kiss on his neck, causing his body to tense up. You know he's incredibly ticklish, but he tries to hold back his laughter to avoid looking too vulnerable.
"Ticklish, huh?" You tease, running your fingers over his neck.
Gintoki tries to deny it, but you can tell by the way his body reacts that he's telling a fib. You lean in to kiss him again, this time on the lips, and he relaxes into the moment, forgetting all about the lipstick marks on his cheek.
After a few more drinks and some more teasing, Gintoki finally gives in and lets out a loud laugh as you tickle him. You can see the vulnerability in his eyes, but you also see the love he has for you.
As you leave the bar, you link your arm with his, feeling grateful to have him by your side. Even if you leave lipstick marks all over his face and tickle him until he can't breathe, you wouldn't have it any other way.
Bonus (Pako & Zurako)
[ I was debating whether to use 'she' or 'he' pronouns, and now I'm just confused. 😫 ]
Pako (Sakata Gintoki)
➵ Pako is a bit shy when it comes to public displays of affection, but when she's alone with her s/o, she's more than happy to shower them with kisses.
➵ She loves the feeling of being close to someone and making them happy, and she finds that kissing is one of the best ways to do that. Her kisses are often playful and teasing, but when she's feeling especially affectionate, they can be quite passionate and intense.
➵ Pako likes to surprise her s/o with kisses when they least expect it. She'll sneak up behind them and plant a quick kiss on their cheek or forehead, or she'll pull them into a sudden, passionate kiss when they're least expecting it.
➵ Her s/o never knows when she's going to strike, but they love the feeling of being constantly surprised by her affection.
➵ Pako loves to give her s/o butterfly kisses. She'll flutter her eyelashes against their cheek or nose, making them laugh and squirm with delight.
➵ She finds it incredibly cute and endearing when her s/o giggles or blushes from her butterfly kisses, and she loves nothing more than making them feel happy and loved.
Zurako (Katsura Kotarō)
➵ Zurako is a very romantic person, and she loves to show her affection through physical touch. She’s always happy to give her s/o kisses, whether they're quick pecks on the cheek or long, passionate smooches.
➵ She finds kissing to be a very intimate and meaningful act, and she enjoys the feeling of being close to her s/o.
➵ Zurako is a bit of a hopeless romantic, and she loves to sweep her s/o off their feet with grand romantic gestures. She’ll often surprise them with kisses in unexpected places, like on a park bench or in the middle of a crowded street.
➵ She loves to make her s/o feel special and loved, and she’ll go to great lengths to show them how much she cares.
➵ Zurako's kisses are often very sweet and gentle. She loves to hold her s/o close and nuzzle their neck or ear before giving them a soft, tender kiss.
➵ She finds it incredibly romantic to share small, intimate moments like these with her s/o, and she treasures every chance she gets to show them how much she loves them.

I just finished the Kyubei arc in Gintama and honestly? This was incredibly advanced for its time.
No seriously, imagine telling teenage boys (Shonen jumps target audience) "love is love" and "who cares abt gender" way back in 2007?
Now, there are definetly some things that haven't aged well in the show (erm... the Zura cross dressing episode) but despite that, in these "arcs" the anime is surprisingly positive abt gncs.
Like, in both times, it's clear the message portrayed is "Who cares about gender and how you present yourself? Just be a good person" and "Don't feel ashamed by yourself and others"
Ik people might think that Kyubei seems like the classic trope "girl who was forced to be a boy and then just became a normal girl after conflict" but I was surprised by how they didn't do that.
They let them become the Secret Third Thing and it's so nice to see. This might have disappointed ppl who were expecting them to be transmasc, but I think the gender fuckery is good on it's own.
No seriously. When Gintoki and Shinpachi say "An attraction that goes beyond gender you say, I don't give a damn, fool" I was like, scared they were going to say something homo/transphobic but surprisingly Gintoki followed up with "anyone who makes their partner cry is a jerk!" Which is so??? This episode is so good, and this is the exactly the point of it.
Kyubei wasn't wrong for not being a boy or girl. Kyubei and wasn't wrong for being afab and falling in love with a woman. The reason Kyubei was wrong was because they put their feelings above hers.
And- to seal it off with a golden key, they let Kyubei and Tae reconcilliate, instead of giving them a cruel fate like most authors do with queer characters 😭
This is why people say Gintama is peak anime, cause frankly, it really is.
(Also bonus: on this arcs ending, all male characters are shown barechested, and Kyubei is included in that (with bandages like a binder)! It's cool how the anime staff decided to respect the character like that.)
Update: (this post was originally from april 18, it is not may 6). I watched the next episode that Kyubei appears in and as you could probably guess, I am quite disappointed 😑. Boy that sure was a downgrade. Like yeah I get Gintama makes a lot of "men are gross" jokes and this is a product of its time, but the last arc was so good this was kinda upsetting :/ oh well.

A Cheat Sheet to Gintama References
Have you ever said to yourself "I want to get into Gintama, but I want to understand all of the references?"
Well fear not, for I have a cheat sheet for a lot of the references. Not all of them, because I'd never finish this post. But there are a lot of references the series makes, and as non-native Japanese viewers, a lot of things are lost on us. That's not even getting to things that are lost due to the language barrier. So here it is: a (not so) comprehensive list of series that Gintama references!
Manga
Dragon Ball (Bonus points if it involves dunking on Yamcha.)
Fist of the North Star (Complete with a copyright-friendly version of You Wa Shock!)
Saint Seiya (an entire episode hinges on Gintoki being afraid of getting sued by Toei because of their constant Saint Seiya references)
City Hunter (I wouldn't be surprised if City Hunter was an inspiration for Gintama. Like Gintoki as a main character is what happens if you were to combine Kenshin Himura and Ryo Saeba into a single man. And then you gave said man Kakashi's hair.)
Rurouni Kenshin (Gintama is best described as the post Big 3 answer to Rurouni Kenshin. While One Piece and Shaman King are the true successors to RK, Gintama is the series most similar in terms of aesthetics... minus the modern tech in Meiji-era Japan.)
One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach (I'm folding all three into one line due to their nature as Jump's Big Three. Not helping things is that Gintama ran around the same time as all three.)
JoJo's Bizarre Adventures
Death Note
To Love Ru (Yes, really.)
SKET Dance (Not surprising as SKET Dance mangaka Kenta Shinohara was Sorachi's apprentice at one point)
Fullmetal Alchemist
Lupin III
Golgo 13
Kinnikuman (the thing Ultimate Muscle is based off of)
Doraemon
Sazae-san
Berserk
The Disastrous Life of Saiki K (Ask me about how Gintama helped screw Saiki K out of an English Dub for Season 2)
Anime
Mobile Suit Gundam (It helps that Sunrise/Bandai Namco Pictures produced the Gintama anime, because there are a lot of Gundam references in particular. You also don't get the Renho arc without Sunrise producing the anime.)
Mobile Suit Victory Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn (Specifically the fact that Shinpachi and Tsukuyo's voice actors are in each series respectively)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (Especially if it involves MADAO, as MADAO shares a voice actor with Gendo Ikari)
Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and My Neighbor Totoro (I'm highlighting these three Ghibli movies in particular due to how often they are referenced throughout the series.)
The Brave Franchise (Specifically The Brave Express Might Gaine and The King of Braves GaoGaiGar)
Patlabor (Yes really, and SKET Dance is partially to thank for this one)
Video Games
Dragon Quest (Specifically DQ III & IV, this series gets referenced a lot once Tama is introduced)
Sengoku Basara (Specifically when it involves one Toshiro Hijikata)
Final Fantasy VII
Mother
Super Mario Brothers
Tales Of
Resident Evil
Yakuza/Like a Dragon (Not surprising, as both Like a Dragon and Gintama are set in and around Kabukicho)
Monster Hunter
Live Action Film & Television
Abarenbo Shogun (SHOGUN KA YO!!!!!)
NHK Taiga Drama (The Shinsengumi drama in particular is a primary influence for Gintama)
Game of Death
Star Wars
Kinpachi-sensei (The series that the Ginpachi-sensei segments are based off of)
Doctor Who
I hope this helps if and when you decide to watch through Gintama. I'll try to update this post as I remember more references or if anyone messages me with a reference that I missed. Because good lord are there a lot of references. Oh, also remember: if this is your first time watching Gintama, start on episode 3. The first two episodes are filler.

🥂 TIME TO END THIS YEAR WITH A BANGING 🥂
And what better way to end the year with a jam-packed sexual schedule !!! 💃 Inspired by acclaimed poet laureate Jungkook and his love sonnet "Seven", let's cap off 2023 together !!!
To add on to the saucy calendar, please submit the following:
Your mans (singular) of choice !
Day of the week and specific time of the day (bonus points if you can somehow incorporate some of the lyrics from "Seven" lololol)
A brief prompt detailing what sauciness the two of you two are getting up to (more context the better !)
Your desired lewds of choice !
Examples:
You weren't sure what it was about lazy cats hating Monday's, but what you did know was that Leona loved being balls deep inside of you at around 1 PM after lunch !!! (Sleepy lazy sex, cockwarming)
By this point, you knew it was better to avoid your Grand Company on Thursday's at around 7:00 PM, when Frontline training campaigns would take place at the acclaimed Seal Rock. After all, you weren't sure of how much more of Meteor's ""playful"" bullying you could endure (Ekiben, bukkake)
It's usually around 11:30-ish PM on Thursdays that you clock in to your local convenience store for your shift. It's also close to this time that the store's manager Alban has you braced right up against the backroom shelves !!! (Doggy style, dirty talk)
A week in the dog house after an argument has Gintoki at his neediest. If trying to make amends with strawberry parfaits wasn't gonna cut it, then giving you the dicking of a lifetime on Sunday starting at 9:23 AM will !!! (Makeup sex, creampie)

Isekai stories don't just have to be about a teenage boy's overpowered fantasy wish fulfillment. They could also be for young men trapped in capitalism's clutches, overworked and underappreciated, wishing to live a simpler fantasy life with overpowered abilities and a powerful, big-boobed girl at his side.
Here's a few I've watched lately.
Banished from the Hero's Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside: A competent assistant to his hero little sister's party, Red is now living under an alias as a apothecary. The world's magic system of "Blessings" was interesting, but the bulk of the screen time is devoted to the romance between Red and his big-boobed girl, Rit. After a while, I grew very tired of the romance nonsense and the highlight dots on Rit's boobs...
Chillin’ in My 30s after Getting Fired from the Demon King’s Army: A competent assistant to the four demon generals fired after a change of leadership, Dariel starts his new life helping the people who saved him at his lowest. Tomokazu Sugita voices Dariel, so in my mind, Dariel is a slightly less lazy, slightly less perverted Gintoki, and that alone makes this worth watching for a bit. Plus the story's comedic take on its romance and its more even balance between plot/action and slice-of-life fun makes Chillin' ten times better than the molasses that was Banished. Also, the animators showed some restraint by limiting their use of boob highlight dots, which I appreciate.
Handyman Saitou in Another World: After being fired and getting isekai'd by a truck, a competent jack-of-all-trades joins an adventurer party as their support thief. Saitou desires to be appreciated, and his new friends not only appreciate his lock-picking and general gear-making skills but also his kind heart. The story is first presented in a series of vignettes (I wouldn't be surprised if the manga was mostly a series of 4-panel bits), and the cast is full of unique roleplaying builds and characters. It's enjoyable so far, apart from the really trashy bits.
Campfire Cooking in Another World with my Absurd Skill: After getting caught in a summoning circle meant for three teenagers, 27-year-old salaryman Mukouda decides to not get involved in all that and to explore this new world as an average traveling merchant. As an isekai'd 'hero', he has the special skill of being able to buy anything from Aeon's online shop (with free instant shipping!). Apart from the sponsors and the over-reliance on sauces and just-add-water soups (all that salt!), a simple food-porn-based show isn't the worst thing. Also, instead of a big-boobed girlfriend, he gets a fenrir and the cutest baby slime. Is that a bonus?
