Whenever events like last night happen I feel this urge to run on the street and help. It’s a bit odd since usually I’m sooo far away but like I’m always wondering what can i do what should I be doing? It’s like innate. And it happens all the time in these circumstances.

An interesting question: why do we need engineering managers? (Thank you, Anton!) The author argues that hierarchy has not been invented to oppress people (though it is sometimes used that way) but that it is an emerging property of self-organizing systems, which is "is absolutely critical to the adaptability, resiliency, and scalability of complex systems." Especially, "Hierarchy minimizes the costs of coordination and reduces the amount of information that any given part of the system has to keep track of." Applying this to engineering organizations, "we can say that a manager’s job is to coordinate between teams and help their team perform better." They build relationships and wider context that makes them better at their job, while it allows engineers to focus on their job. Also, management labor consists of frequent context switching (meetings and stuff), which would kill any "maker." "If you’re trying to hold your tech leads responsible for building healthy engineering teams, tools, and processes, you are asking them to do two calendarily incompatible jobs with only one calendar. The likeliest scenario is that they will focus on the outcomes they feel comfortable owning (the technical ones), while you pile up organizational debt in the background."

This is the next part of my Plance fanfic series. There’s hints of Plance, Kallura, and Hunay in this chapter, plus loads of action!
This is the link to the previous chapter: https://truegryffindorforever2.tumblr.com/post/188911292170/i-had-fun-writing-this-chapter-lance-and-pidge
Chapter 9: The Morning Workout
At 0800 on Monday morning, the Paladins met at the Garrison’s training deck for a mandatory combat simulation. The Altean technology from the Castle of Lions was the foundation of this enormous new training area that the Garrison had built, not just for the Paladins, but for the future trainees of the Defenders Project that the Holts were developing. Even though Pidge had helped her father design the platform, the scenarios were so varied that even she would be surprised by most of them. She had asked Matt to do most of the programming for their training so that she would not know what kind of dangers they would face. Coran and Shiro had also given Matt some suggestions on the specifics.
Keith had arrived early, and was in the control room with Coran, who would be operating today’s simulation. Shiro and Matt had arrived shortly afterwards to observe and evaluate the results of the exercise.
Allura and Pidge were on the deck by 0750, and when Lance and Hunk arrived, Lance saw that the princess was helping Pidge with her unruly long hair, braiding it tightly so that it would fit under her helmet. “Good morning, Ladies!” Lance called cheerfully. Pidge made a little wave and smiled at them.
“Good morning, boys!” Allura replied as she finished helping Pidge with her hair.
“Good morning!” Hunk replied.
“Thanks, Allura. My hair is so much trouble. I am thinking about cutting it again.”
“Aw, don’t do that. Your hair is so pretty, Katie,” Lance said, never taking his eyes off of her. She blushed a little as she averted her gaze and smiled. Hunk gave Allura a knowing glance, and the princess lifted her eyebrows at him, looked at Lance and Pidge, then back towards Hunk. Hunk knew what the princess suspected, and he gave her a little nod. Allura looked happily surprised.
Keith walked out onto the deck. “Good morning, team. Today’s combat training exercise is an infiltration of a Galra pirate vessel. It’s the flagship of a large fleet of destroyer drones that are maneuvered in tandem by a slave circuit, which is controlled by a computer system that Pidge must hack before the flagship’s main reactor goes critical. Our coalition fleet is engaged in battle with the pirates and they have managed to partially disable the flagship, so our time is limited. To complicate things further, we have discovered that there’s also a small group of kidnapped citizens of the coalition worlds that are being held for ransom, and we must find them before we escape. If we fail, the fleet of destroyers will attack one of the coalition colony planets nearby, killing millions of colonists. We will have 25 doboshes to get through the maze of corridors to the brig and the main control room, complete the mission, and escape to our lions before the ship explodes. Reprogrammed Galra sentry bots will be playing the role of the pirates, but there are a few surprises onboard the ship, so expect the unexpected. Ready?”
“Ready!” they all replied. The plain white platform was transformed into the grey corridors of the pirate flagship, dimly lit by an eerie purplish glow. Klaxons blared and there was the sound of running metallic feet as the sentries charged, firing their energy rifles at the Paladins who drew their Bayards and activated their shields as they charged into the onslaught. Lance took out half a dozen sentries with his rifle, and Hunk incapacitated half a dozen more with his canon. Allura and Keith defended Pidge with electro whip and sword as she ran to the nearest terminal to find the location of the kidnapped citizens. When she found them she transmitted a map to everyone’s wrist displays.
“There are three of them. I’ve sent you their locations.”
“Great work, Pidge. Hunk, Allura, come with me to rescue the prisoners. Lance, go on with Pidge to the main control room,” Keith ordered. Lance was the most logical choice to defend Pidge while she worked. He could strike the enemy from a distance with his rifle and defend her in close quarters with his sword.
“Twenty doboshes remaining,” Coran’s voice announced over their helmet coms.
“Let’s move!” Keith shouted, and they went their separate ways.
Keith, Allura, and Hunk had to fight their way through a corridor full of sentries who were dressed in pirate gear and wielding both energy pistols and swords. After making short work of this obstacle, they entered a larger room consisting of several levels of gantries and cells. The area was filled with guards, one of whom was a huge, troll-like creature who carried a massive club. He swiped at Allura just as Keith pushed her out of harm’s way. Hunk opened fire on the creature, distracting him as Keith attacked the sentry guards, slicing the several bots to pieces, but just then even more sentries poured into the detention area brandishing their weapons. The Paladins were vastly outnumbered. Allura rushed to locate the three prisoners and release them from their cells. Romelle, Shay, and Axca soon emerged from the cubicles that Allura had opened. “I think we have some more allies in this fight,” Allura called to the others.
“Shay!” Hunk shouted. “Get her out of here!”
“I want to help,” the Balmeran girl said as she moved toward the battle. Axca and Romelle had already picked up fallen energy pistols and were combating the sentries nearest them. Shay used her size and strength to her advantage in the conflict, hurling sentries left and right, while Allura ran towards the troll-like monstrosity. She leaped onto its back and encircled the creature’s thick neck with her whip. It screamed in agony as she sent electrical currents through its artificial hide and android body. The pirates opened fire on Allura, knocking her down from the monster’s shoulders. Her armor protected her from the worst of the blast, but she fell to the deck, stunned.
“Allura!” Keith screamed. He ran towards her.
The troll-like creature was still disoriented from Allura’s attack. Hunk spotted a row of gantries and empty cells above the monster’s head and opened fire with his most powerful missiles, collapsing the structure on top of the monster.
Keith had lifted Allura’s unconscious body from the deck while Axca and Romelle provided cover for them. “We have to get to the hangar now! We are running out of time!”
“But what about Lance and Pidge?” Hunk asked, running after the others.
The corridor ahead of them was blocked by four pirate sentries with energy swords. Lance shot the first one who changed at them, but dodged as the second attacked with its sword. Lance’s Bayard transformed to its Altean broadsword form and he engaged in a furious duel with the bot. Pidge had managed to short-circuit the third sentry with her Bayard, but the fourth pirate sentry seized her, picking her up from the deck and holding its sword to her throat. She screamed. Lance heard her just as he had just sliced the second sentry in half, and while his sword was still in motion, his Bayard transformed back into a rifle. In one fluid movement, he aimed and fired at the pirate’s head, blasting it off of its shoulders. Pidge jumped down from its embrace as it collapsed. “Way to go, Sharpshooter!” Lance grinned at her.
“Ten doboshes!” Coran announced from the observation deck. Sam and Colleen had come by to watch the training exercise, unbeknownst to the Paladins. They watched as Lance and Pidge ran through the corridor towards the control room.
Keith helped a very groggy Allura down the passageway to the hangar where the lions were protected by their particle barriers. “Will you be able to fly?” He asked.
“I think so,” she straightened to her full height and saw that Hunk was already leading Shay aboard Yellow Lion. Romelle took Allura’s arm and led her towards Blue, and then Axca quickly followed Keith towards Black Lion.
The control room was filled with sentries, but Lance and Pidge took them out in a matter of moments. Pidge ran to the main terminal as Lance opened fire on the sentries that poured through the open doorway. Pidge’s fingers flew over the key pad as row after row of data scrolled up the display screen. “Hurry! Pidge, there’s too many of them!” Lance continued to pick them off.
Pidge didn’t answer him. Even if the flagship was destroyed, she had to send out the signal to disable the destroyer drones, or they would continue on their predetermined plan of attack on the colony. The program that she was trying to hack was one of the most complex she had ever seen. Her brow was damp with nervous perspiration. She began to panic.
The last of the sentries had been taken down by Lance’s sword, just as Pidge yelled, “I’m in!”
“Five doboshes,” Coran announced.
“Red and Green just took off without them, Keith,” Hunk’s voice announced over their comm channel.
“Lance, Pidge, report in. What’s your status?” Keith asked from Black Lion’s cockpit.
“She’s reprogramming the destroyer drones now,” Lance replied.
“Keith, Red and Green have flown away from the battle, far beyond the blast radius. The coalition flight group has disengaged as well. The destroyers are almost to the planet’s surface!” Allura cried, despair in her voice. “They will never make it out in time.”
“Red and Green would never abandon them like that, would they?” Hunk asked. “How will they get to their lions?!”
“Pidge, we have to go now!” Lance yanked her from the terminal pulling her towards the corridor.
“There’s an airlock to the left side of the next corridor,” she said, and they ran towards it.
Just then a sentry opened fire on them from behind. Pidge fell to the deck. Lance turned and blasted the robot to pieces. “Pidge! Are you alright?” He knelt beside her, then helped her to stand.
“My suit’s Okay, But my jetpack isn’t.” Lance opened the airlock and pulled her inside.
“Then you’ll just have to hold onto me. Don’t let go.”
“I won’t.”
Lance opened the door to the hull, and they were pulled into the vacuum of space. Pidge was holding on to him with her arms and legs wrapped tightly around him, and Lance clasped her to his chest with all of his strength. Screaming, they tumbled through the void.
Allura was monitoring the drone attack. “The destroyers...they’ve stopped!”
“Pidge’s hack worked!” Hunk exclaimed. “But where are they?!” Hunk and Allura both had tears streaming down their faces.
“Keith?” Allura called.
Keith didn’t respond. His eyes went blank, and he glowed with quintessence. Black was communicating with him, telling him what he must do. He inserted his Bayard into its port, and suddenly Black Lion was no longer there.
Lance had activated his jetpack and was flying away from the inevitable destruction of the flagship. He held Pidge close to him. She was sobbing. “We aren’t going to make it.”
Just then, Black Lion appeared out of nowhere, his mighty jaws open to catch Lance and Pidge, then teleport away to where Red and Green were waiting for them. The flagship exploded, bright as a nova.
“End simulation,” Coran said, and everyone in the control booth stood in shocked silence. The Paladins, along with their rescued “hostages” were once again standing on the white floor of the training deck: Hunk and Shay, Allura and Romelle, Keith and Axca... But Lance and Pidge were floating in midair, still clinging to each other as the antigravity field lowered them to the deck. They were both breathing heavily, and when they landed, they took off their helmets.
“That was terrifying,” Pidge said weakly. Lance hugged her.
“It was so realistic. I thought we were going to die,” Lance admitted. They were both shaking.
“Well done, team,” said Shiro, who had just come down from the observation deck.
“Keith has unlocked Black Lion’s ability to teleport,” Allura said proudly.
“Hunk and Allura managed to take down the troll by working as a team,” Keith added.
“And Lance’s combat scores are the highest he’s ever earned,” Shiro added. “His Bayard transformed from rifle to sword and back again, and he used those transformations flawlessly. I have never seen him fight like that.”
“I had the right motivation,” Lance said. “My mission was to protect Pidge.” Lance had his arm around her shoulders, and he gave her a little squeeze. She blushed and smiled shyly.
“Pidge, That slave circuit program was designed to be unhackable in the time you were given. What you did was nothing short of astonishing,” Shiro said with admiration for the youngest Paladin.
“She saved the entire colony from the destroyer drone attack,” Hunk added.
“Outstanding work, everyone.” Keith had his arms around Allura and Hunk. He gave them each a side hug, then moved to hug Lance and Pidge. “I’m really proud of you two,” he said while hugging them both simultaneously.
“You saved us, Keith,” Pidge said.
“Yeah, man. You were amazing.” Keith smiled, then gave Lance a little pat on the shoulder.
“The whole team was amazing. Let’s hit the showers and meet up at the Paladins’ lounge for lunch.”

Episode 127: Are You My Dad?
Tumblr media
“This might be serious.”
Those of y’all that check out my episode rankings at the end of every post know that my favorite “normal” episode of Steven Universe (so not Steven and the Stevens or Hit the Diamond, which are in their own category of perfect character studies) isn’t Lion 3 or Alone Together or Jailbreak or The Answer or Mr. Greg or Mindful Education. And, spoiler alert, it won’t be Jungle Moon or A Single Pale Rose or Reunited or Change Your Mind. It’s Mirror Gem.
So it’s not a shocker that I’m drawn to another episode that’s the beginning of a two-parter closing out the first half of a fifty-odd episode chunk, which starts out goofy but grows increasingly ominous and ends in a confrontation with a new blue Gem. In terms of tone, Are You My Dad? is an incredible exercise in tension, albeit one that benefits from two prior episodes’ cliffhangers in a way Mirror Gem manages without (but to be fair, Mirror Gem arrives when we still don’t know there are other Gems, which gives its mystery a major advantage).
Tumblr media
The silly beginning here is strengthened by the return of all three original Crystal Gems, who haven’t been in a room together since Rocknaldo. They’re increasingly out of focus as we get into more Steven-centric storytelling, and I’ve heard this lobbed as a criticism of latter-day Steven Universe; while I agree that these characters are terrific and am always down to see more of them, I can appreciate that their big moment is Act II (Seasons 2/3), and Steven’s is Act III (Seasons 4/5). If Act I is about creating Steven’s universe, and Act II is about developing Steven’s family, it’s because Act III, which the other two have been building towards this whole time, is about Steven.
Episodes like Storm in the Room and Lion 4 fundamentally don’t work with the Crystal Gems around, and our last two episodes place Steven among Beach City citizens to prime us for a finale about Beach City paying for Stevens past. So I get why we haven’t seen the trio as a whole for a while. But I sure am glad to see them again.
Amethyst’s offer of beans and suggestion to barter them for donuts is great, but come on, nothing beats Garnet and Pearl’s sand castle. I love glimpses into the Crystal Gems’ leisure time independent of Steven (he’s around, but clearly wasn’t involved with the construction): because the Gems are so often characterized in relation to Steven and/or in big personal ways, it’s a pleasant change of pace to just see them reading the paper in Watermelon Steven or assembling furniture in Shirt Club. Doug Out and The Good Lars are celebrations of the mundane tainted by the supernatural in their last moments, so it’s perfect to ease us into this new story with more slice-of-life lazing.
Still, this beach day is a backdrop for Steven wondering where his mail is (in the first of many callbacks, we get his Mr. Postman song from all the way back in Cheeseburger Backpack). On its own this might not be a big deal, but we know that Onion and Sadie were being stalked by new Gems and that Lars didn’t show up at the potluck (which, for now, we can lump in with other disappearances), so even though Steven doesn’t know anything sinister is afoot, Jamie’s absence sets off warning bells for us.
Tumblr media
The scenes that follow build dread with masterful efficiency. First we get an uncharacteristically worried Sour Cream, which stands out even more than normal because we just saw him behaving as usual in The Good Lars. His concern is tempered by fun visuals: our MISSING poster is a repurposed WANTED poster, and we get a neat flashback aesthetic as Onion’s haunts are seen as if through an old-school View-Master (calling back to Onion Gang, Arcade Mania, and Onion Friend). While the audience knows new Gems are to blame, Steven is able to write this off as another weird Onion thing, and is more disappointed than concerned when he hears the Big Donut is closed.
Even now, Steven thinks things are probably fine, assuming Lars and Sadie are blowing off work to watch scary movies (calling back to Horror Club and The New Lars). It’s here where we’re introduced to the most clever element of this first act: Barb Miller. She’s connected to Sadie, so she can reveal that her daughter never came home after the potluck, but is also connected to Jamie, who she sent out that morning with Steven’s package. And she’s overprotective enough that she doesn’t make rationalizations like Sour Cream and Steven did for Onion (although she does reference Island Adventure, finally acknowledging how weird it is that three kids went missing for days and nobody seemed to care). In one fell stroke, Steven realizes that this is an alarming pattern, and starts looking for answers at last.
But he still hasn’t caught up to us. Sure, he knows his friends are missing, but he hasn’t seen the looming shadows from the end of Doug Out and The Good Lars, so when he comes across Aquamarine he has no reason to suspect her of kidnapping. A lesser show might build suspense making its characters too thick to put obvious hints together, but Steven Universe makes it clear that none of these threads are obvious to Steven. A more cynical version of the character might deduce earlier that this new Gem is bad news, but despite everything he’s been through in Season 4 he’s still empathetic to his core. After all, the pivotal event of this season was his own dad’s disappearance, so he’s primed to help a kid in a similar situation.
Tumblr media
But finally, after knowing more than Steven from the beginning of the episode, Aquamarine asks the titular question and brings us back into the unknown with him. “Are you my dad?” is a brilliantly weird question: of course it’s odd for anyone to ask this of Steven when the answer is so self-evident, but it’s even odder for a Gem to do so. As Steven later tells Connie when she suggests the stranger might be a hybrid, this is a full Gem, and Gems don’t have dads.
Steven’s council of Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl, and Connie shows that his instinct isn’t to go it alone, lending weight to his solo sacrifice at the end of this two-parter. But for now, it offers a moment of respite by reveling in the artistic differences of these characters; on the one hand, it makes little sense for Steven to not just draw Aquamarine himself, considering he’s the one who saw her and we know he likes drawing from Shirt Club and Open Book and Barn Mates, but on the other hand, this scene is a delight. Connie draws a manga-influenced figure using an amateur ball and plane method, Amethyst goes abstract, Pearl undersells her dramatic flourish, and Garnet just draws herself; I actually think Pearl’s is closest, but we go with Connie’s and set off.
This is the second time since Lion 4 where we’ve explored the potential for other half-humans like Steven, and in my first viewing of Are You My Dad I saw it as foreshadowing for fellow hybrid. The trend never really continued, and while it seems like a red herring in retrospect, the close proximity of two stories about Steven maybe not being alone shows just how alone he really is. There’s nobody else like Steven, and while this makes him special, it adds to his burden as a bridge between worlds, a burden that’s partially thrust upon him and partially created by his own sense of outsized responsibility.
Connie lightens the mood as they search by inventing exciting new scenarios to explain this new Gem, contrasting her further with Pearl. Connie’s art is cutesy while Pearl’s is dramatic, and where Connie sees hope for a new friend, Pearl is the only member of the team who advocates preparing for a fight. We don’t go very far down the “optimism is wrong and cynicism is right” road, because that isn’t at all what this show is about, but I love that youthful innocence from both Steven and Connie isn’t championed as an absolute positive in this story.
Tumblr media
The light mood of two friends hoping for the best leads to Steven making a game of looking through Onion’s woods, and his facetious search of an empty log ends up getting him trapped. Again, this show isn’t here to build suspense by dumbing down the characters: Steven needs to be out of commission for Connie’s kidnapping to work the way it does, but getting stuck comes from realistic playing around rather than stupidity or ineptitude. And it continues the thread of others getting punished for Steven’s perceived mistakes, which of course adds to his guilt complex (and is furthered by Connie getting kidnapped because Steven shouted her name). These are small moments of getting us from Point A to Point B, but it’s so important that this crew pays attention to such details for the story and themes to flow smoothly.
Aquamarine’s questioning becomes even more confusing when she corrects Connie, saying she’s not looking for “your dad” but “my dad.” Connie’s condescending Tarzan speak is a bit out of character, but it at least makes sense that she wants to simplify her language for someone who doesn’t seem to understand the meanings of words. Aquamarine’s hidden nastiness emerges, with a wicked snicker at Connie’s “Me Connie” routine before she calls for Topaz.
Tumblr media
While I prefer Mirror Gem to Are You My Dad? in most regards, the reveal of Topaz takes the cake in the horror department. She’s announced by thundering footsteps that clear birds from the surrounding trees, and emerges first as a shadow before we see our missing friends trapped inside her body. None of the captives’ mouths are free except Onion’s, and he's nonverbal, so their struggles are joined by muffled and incoherent screams while their captor lurks in silence. The soundtrack lurches into unnerving strings as Connie panics at the sight, substitutes more typical digital music as a moment as Topaz splits up, and returns to even tenser strings as Connie is viscerally absorbed into the giant Gem. As with the Ruby Squad’s giant fusion, it’s a brutally practical application of something the Crystal Gems have made beautiful, and Steven is as helpless as Connie to stop it.
A key element of Steven’s martyr complex is that his sense of ownership over everything bad that happens around him is unwarranted, and this sequence is a perfect example. Yes, he’s stuck in a log when Connie is taken, allowing him to blame himself for the kidnapping, but once he’s free he doesn’t stand a chance against Aquamarine’s magic wand. In the best-case scenario, where he and Connie manage to fuse and fight off Topaz, Stevonnie would still lose: as we see in I Am My Mom, even four Crystal Gems working together are beaten with ease by the wand’s ridiculous power. If anything, getting stuck in a log was the only reason Steven was able to regroup and fight back later in the first place. But in the moment, it seems like he made an avoidable mistake that cost Connie her freedom, which is certainly on his mind when he makes his sacrifice.
Tumblr media
Aquamarine follows the Holly Blue Agate mold of brief but memorable villains, and while both are petty monsters, Holly Blue Agate’s Professor Umbridge has nothing on Aquamarine’s Eric Cartman. It’s one thing to let middle management power go to your head, but Aquamarine is cruel for the simple joy of being cruel, an attitude captured magnificently by Della Saba’s refined British accent. She taunts Topaz as readily as her enemies, and unlike the fiercely loyal Homeworld villains we’ve seen before, she sees her duty as a waste of time that she begrudgingly fulfills because she’s the best. Like Kevin, this is a troll who’s just mean to her core, but she unfortunately has a lot more power than your everyday toxic douche.
As is standard for two-parters by now, we end with a cliffhanger, this time evoking Steven’s Dream (another first-parter that ends with a new blue Gem). A loved one has been taken, Steven blames himself because he put this person in harm’s way and couldn’t stop it, so now it’s time for a rescue mission. An unprecedented streak of consecutive serialized episodes already began with Doug Out, but now we get a proper two-parter, then a four-parter, then a six-parter, then another two-parter all in a row. It’s a special time in the series, highlighted by Earth plots and Homeworld plots colliding in ways that backdrop Steven’s role as a child of two worlds, and Are You My Dad excellently escalates the plot.
In closing, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that this is the final episode from the amazing Raven Molisee. Other veterans like Joe Johnston and Kat Morris ended their roles as lead-credit writer/storyboarders to fulfill other roles for the show, but this is it for Molisee’s tenure as an active member of the Crewniverse. Her work speaks for itself: she helped introduce Lapis in Mirror Gem, Peridot in Warp Tour, Jasper in The Return, Yellow Diamond in Message Received, and now Aquamarine and Topaz in Are You My Dad?. She helped bring to life the comedy of Kindergarten Kid and The New Crystal Gems, the tragedy of Rose’s Scabbard and Monster Reunion, the horror of Frybo and Keeping It Together, the wonder of An Indirect Kiss, the catharsis of Earthlings, and so much more. We were lucky to have her, and I really hope she didn’t leave because she was abducted by aliens.
Future Vision!
Steven is down to watch a movie about an orphaned Gem whose parent figure left for Beach City and never came home. So were the fans, apparently.
If every pork chop were perfect, we wouldn’t have inconsistencies…
The ages of Lars and Sadie were nebulous at first, but it’s more or less been established that they’re teens of sorts by now, which makes Barb’s declaration that Sadie’s an adult confusing in a way that I find surprisingly annoying. It’s really not a big deal, but it bothers me way more than your average nitpick.
We’re the one, we’re the ONE! TWO! THREE! FOUR!
It’s not unheard of for first-parters to make my greatest hits list: Mirror Gem is certainly one of them, and we’ve also got The Return and Steven’s Dream. But it’s hard to put an episode without a proper ending up with the best, and despite its wonderful tone, meeting Aquamarine lacks the conclusive impact of meeting Lapis, we don’t get a huge moment of Steven summoning his shield and protecting his team, and Aquamarine isn’t a Big Deal like Blue Diamond. I still love Are You My Dad a lot, but this is a hard list to crack and it does feel like half an episode when viewed alone.

can i ask headcanon for akira, hamuko and minato with s/o who have persona too and knows everything about the shadow and palace but did not join to SEES or Phantom thieve since they don't really want to fight but sometimes when they don't have anything to do, they goes to the palace/tartarus alone to wait for SEES/Phantom thieve finish their mission and cure everyone and or brought everyone food (but in emergency cases they run to their lover's side and join them to defeat shadow)?
oooh I like this idea! I hope you don’t mind but I’m gonna split this into half hc, half scenario since this is such a big prompt
Minato
Minato is glad that s/o doesn’t want to get deeply involved in SEES. what they do in Tartarus is dangerous and he’s already struggling to lead the team, even if he won’t admit it having s/o there would worry him
he doesn’t actively confide in them but if they ask him how he and the rest of the members are doing he’ll be straightforward (the only exception being full moon shadows and his own feelings of incompetence, he doesn’t want s/o anywhere near those cans of worms)
when it comes to the drama that happens amongst his teammates he doesn’t skimp on the details. Minato isn’t very good at getting them to connect with each other so he’s hoping that s/o can help him
whenever they wait at the bottom floor of Tartarus he acts exasperated that they’re hanging but Minato is secretly glad that they do. it means that there’s an assured supply of medicine waiting for the team and the food that they bring along is appreciated after a long expedition
One time Minato and the team got cornered by the Reaper but to his surprise s/o came running out of nowhere to lead them towards the next staircase. When they’re in the clear Minato scolds s/o for doing something so reckless but everyone knows there’s no real heat to his words when he pulls them into a tight embrace. He beats himself up inside for putting everyone in that situation in the first place but he’s glad to have someone as reliable as s/o around.
Hamuko
she’s kind of disappointed that her s/o doesn’t want to join SEES, they could’ve been a secret powerhouse couple together but she doesn’t pressure them into it
once s/o is in the know Hamuko slowly opens up her to them about her own self that she keeps behind her cheerful persona. she confides to them about her own insecurities and depressing thoughts
when it comes to infighting in the team though, she’s very vague. Hamuko doesn’t want to comment on those kinds of private matters to s/o unless they burst into something she can’t handle
it makes Hamuko please when she hears s/o and the other teammates engaging in casual conversation on the ground floor of Tartarus, even if they aren’t part of SEES she’s glad the others treats them as a friend
Hamuko was on the her last footing when s/o appeared after her team got wiped out by a particularly violent group of shadows. The two of them were in tandem with each other as they covered each other’s weaknesses. She acts her role as leader up until they get everyone to the lobby and head back to the dorms. But as soon as she and s/o have privacy she breaks down into tears and holds them close. In that moment she felt immense relief, Hamuko thought that she would lose everything again but with s/o by her side she felt like she could anything.
Akira
when s/o declined becoming a Phantom Thief some of the team was suspicious of them but Akira put a good word in for them. he does wish that they’d fight to bring justice to the corrupt but understands that they aren’t willing to take the risk of being caught
that said though he’s appreciative that they keep everyone’s identity a secret and even participates in the meetings. even if they aren’t an official member, Akira sees them as one in his eyes
on the off chance that the black mask persona user or a cognitive person were to appear, s/o actually keeps a close distance away from the thieves during a palace rune and hands out the healing items in the safe spots
it’s always awkward when s/o joins them in Mementos though because the Mona car doesn’t have enough space to fit everyone. much to the team’s discomfort Akira is always offering them to sit on his lap in the car ride, which a flustered s/o takes up
The heist deadline was getting dangerously close causing the thieves to become reckless and alert the shadows one too many times. They were surrounded from all sides when s/o finally caught up to them and looking none too please. To say Akira was surprised by s/o as they help take out shadows would be an understatement. he’s left standing there for a moment wondering how someone as passive as s/o can suddenly be so brutal. He finally understands it when they criticizes him for being so reckless. Akira affectionate ruffles their hair as he apologizes for making them worry like that

Kobes’ Mindset
The Mamba Mentality and How It Can Help You Be Better at Golf and Life.
Gio Valiante, Ph.D. - Author: Fearless Golf & Golf Flow.
Over the course of my 20 year career as a performance psychologist for athletes and executives, I have worked with hundreds of high achievers across some of the most competitive domains: NFL, NBA, PGA Tour, MLB, and C-suite executives ranging from Silicon Valley to Wall Street. I say all this only to convey that I have had the privilege of a front row seat, in the most competitive environments, to the Best of The Best (BoTB).
Even in this sea of excellence in which I have been lucky enough to swim, Kobe Bryant stands out as having perhaps the best mental game I’ve ever studied. The Mamba Mentality is more than an attitude or a mindset; it is a virtual manifesto of a life well lived – what the Greeks (most notably, Aristotle) call Arete – the best expression of oneself, day in and day out. So outstanding was Kobe’s psychological toolbox, that it is the key feature to take away from Kobe’s legacy. It wasn’t Kobe’s 81 point game, nor his 5 championships, nor his business acumen that Tiger Woods recollected in the wake of Kobe’s passing. Rather, Tiger (along with the majority of people with whom I’ve spoken) say the greatest thing they’ve taken from Kobe’s passing was the mindset with which he approached and played the games of basketball and life.
Though my work takes me across many achievement domains, golf remains at the forefront of my thinking because more than any other arena, it puts a premium on one’s mindset. To master the game, one must master so many things, including mastery of oneself. Golf is expository, meaning whatever your weakness, golf will expose it. Golf exposes overconfidence, under-confidence, sloppiness, risk appetite or aversion, motivation, resilience, lack of attention to detail, laziness, self-awareness, imbalance, physical conditioning … and literally every meaningful trait that performance psychologists deem important.
Let me state it unequivocally: Had Kobe chosen to purse golf rather than basketball, he would have been amazing. What did Kobe do that you can learn from to pursue your best game? Read below to find out:
1.     Kobe knew his Why. When psychologists study motivation, they do not only look at the amount of motivation someone has (ranging from low to high) but more importantly the quality of their motivation. People are motivated for different reasons, and not all motivations are created equal. For example, people in a state of panic are highly motivated, but seldom does panic produce great results. The highest quality motivation – what we call a Mastery motivation – is driven intrinsically by pure love of the craft, passion for constant improvement (kaizen), and love of challenge. Kobe loved the game itself. As far back as high school, he would show up two hours before practice, alone, to shoot hoops in a dark gym. When Kobe was done playing professionally, he titled his Oscar-winning film “Dear Basketball.” The film wasn’t a testimonial to himself, his ego, his fame, or his achievement … but rather was an ode to the game itself. Kobe’s love of basketball was consistent with another great, Ben Hogan, who said “Golf is a livelihood in doing the thing I love to do. I don’t like the glamour. I just like the game.” The takeaway is to always play for love of challenge, love of improvement, and love of the game. Not to impress others, show off, or validate yourself (aka, Ego golf). Play simply because you love the game and all the various challenges and special moments of wins and losses it offers.
2.     Kobe followed his Calling. In Extraordinary Minds, Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner studied the common denominator from the most “extraordinary” individuals in history. One of his inferences was this: there was a perfect *fit* between the individual, their particular makeup, and the domain in which they flourished. Mozart found music, Virginia Woolf found poetry, Yo-Yo Ma found the cello, Tiger Woods found golf, Steve Cohen found the stock market, and Kobe found basketball. It is hard to imagine any one of these extraordinary individuals having achieved what they did if they never found their true purpose in life.
3.     Kobe loved to Work. It is hard to imagine outpacing everyone else in any given domain if the work feels laborious. When I interact with the BoTB, what I commonly hear is how much they love their work. How the work is always in the back of their minds, even when they are doing other things. Commonly, an “inversion” happens for these individuals. Whereas most people find a quiet mind when their work is over, the BoTB get anxious and antsy when they are on vacations, having downtime, or otherwise abandoning their pursuit of excellence. Their minds quiet when they are working, not when they are relaxing. Think of what Ben Hogan said: “When I don’t practice for a day, I notice. Two days, my wife notices. Three days, the world notices.” Over the course of 40 years, famed hedge fund investor Steve Cohen has missed four of the 10,000 days the markets were tradeable, and all four of these days, he was in the hospital unable to trade. Kobe’s work ethic was legendary. He was also once quoted as saying: “I can’t relate to lazy people. We don’t speak the same language. I don’t understand you. I don’t want to understand you.” And of course, when a 15 year old Lebron James first asked Kobe the secret to sustained excellence in basketball, Kobe replied “Hard work. There is no substitute for the work.”
4.     Kobe was Confident. Make no mistake about, confidence is the great arbiter on the road to success. Kobe was good, and Kobe knew he was good; after all, he’d put in the work (see #3 above). The first time he prepared to face Michael Jordan, a teammate asked Kobe, “‘Hey, you want some advice? Whatever you do, don’t look him in the eye.’ ‘Wait, excuse me? Why the hell would I not look him in the eye?’ I don’t think my teammate understood that I’m THAT too. Can’t ... look me in the eye either, buddy.’” But that is also true of all the great ones: a young Tiger Woods was criticized when he first came out on Tour for picking himself to win tournaments. His father, Earl, was also criticized for publicly saying how much better his son was than the rest of the players. Jack Nicklaus once observed, “What I do know is that inner certitude about one's abilities is a golfer's primary weapon, if only because it's the strongest defense against the enormous pressures the game imposes once a player is in a position to win. Golf's gentlemanly code requires that you always hide self-assuredness very carefully. But hide it or not, you'll never get very far without it." And about Jack, Tom Weiskopf observed: "Jack knew he was going to beat you. You knew Jack was going to beat you. And Jack knew that you knew that he was going to beat you." The takeaway: Don’t doubt yourself. In basketball, just as in golf and in life, you have to believe in yourself, even when the world doesn’t believe in you.
5.     Kobe was Resilient. One of the hallmarks of confidence is the ability to overcome adversity (what we call “normative failure”). Resilience does not lead to confidence; it emerges from it. The more authentically confident you are in your preparation, work ethic, and self-awareness … the better you can overcome life’s obstacles. Lest we forget, baseball great Derek Jeter began his professional career 0 for 14. Three-time Super Bowl winning QB Troy Aikman threw 9 TD’s and 18 Interceptions in his first season. Van Gogh sold one profitable painting in his lifetime. Steve Jobs dropped out of college and was fired by Apple before forming Pixar. Tom Landry, Chuck Noll, Bill Walsh, and Jimmy Johnson accounted for 11 of the 19 Super Bowl victories from 1974 to 1993. They also share the distinction of having the worst records of first- season head coaches in NFL history - their collective record was 1 win, 45 losses. Famously, Thomas Edison failed 1,000 times at inventing the light bulb. All of them share two things: they achieved immortality, and they overcame very big roadblocks on their road to BoTB. The lesson for you is this: never experience a setback as something final. Failure is not the opposite of success. It is temporary and built into success. It is the fabric. Embrace your own setbacks and failures, and weave them into the narrative of your own great story.
6.     Kobe practiced with Purpose. Kobe was famous for his relentless work ethic. He often shot 1,000 additional shots a day on top of weight training and team practice to work on particular shots and situations. Kobe mentally rehearsed every scenario he could possibly face so that he was never caught off guard. Shaquille O’Neal noted that he had seen Kobe practicing without a ball – weaving, huffing, faking-out – to practice specific scenarios in his imagination on the court.  Similarly, Tiger Woods is known to use his range sessions prior to the Masters practicing each and every shot on the golf course chronologically, starting from the tee shot on hole 1, then shot into 1 green, and so on.  They are preparing for battle by rehearsing the situations that will actually occur – having to hit a baby fade off the first tee, carving a draw on the 3rd approach shot; not hitting stock shots ball after ball mindlessly. Make your practice meaningful and applicable to the challenges you will face on the golf course. As Tiger’s father advised him Saturday evening before the 1997 Masters, “expect the best. Prepare for everything.” The BoTB plan for every scenario. They mange risk effectively. They are never caught off guard.
7.     Kobe had big dreams. When Kobe was asked about how he continues to push his boundaries and comfort zones, he attributed his success to his dreams. He said, “Make sure that your dreams always stay pure. It’s not a matter of pushing beyond your limitations or expectations. It’s really a matter of protecting your dreams, protecting your imagination. That’s really the key. And when you do that, then the world just seems limitless.” To me, chasing dreams is an act of courage. It is easy to settle in life; easy to live within the parameters of other people’s expectations of you. If you are willing to dream big, to practice with purpose and intent, then you will be occupying space reserved for Gods and Legends.
8.     Kobe was Fearless. While I was a young graduate student at Emory University, I did a study on professional golfers. What emerged from that study was something unexpected: the role that fear plays in golf. This finding was both surprising and unexpected because, unlike football or boxing, there is no real danger in golf. Nonetheless, fear was omnipresent, but the best golfers in the world elevated themselves above the rest by playing fearless golf (which ended up being the title of my first book). Kobe went all-in on basketball, and when he was done, he went all-in on film making, parenting, and coaching his kids. He was once photographed in a Bruce Lee shirt which read, “Fear is for other people” and was once interviewed saying, “Being fearless means putting yourself out there and going for it. No matter what. Go for it. Not for anybody else. But for yourself.” Kobe played, and lived, fearlessly. Surely a lesson for us all.
9.     Kobe Innovated, Evolved, and Reinvented Himself and his Game. If there is one standout feature of BoTB that is largely ignored, it is their willingness to take risks to get better. Tiger Woods won the 1997 Masters by 12 strokes, then proceeded to win three more Majors (including the 2000 US Open by 15 strokes) and decided his swing wasn’t good enough, so he overhauled it beginning in 2004. He did it again in 2010. Tiger won in so many different ways: overpowering courses, strategizing around trouble, winning with his short game, his putter, his mind. Gary Player has won professional tournaments in 4 decades, evolving his game and his body. The artist Pablo Picasso is known for his ever-evolving style (Blue Period, Rose Period, African, Cubism, Surrealism) and set the stage for artists to follow. Robert Plant, the lead singer of Led Zeppelin, attributed their success to the fact that they “constantly evolved and changed their style” over the course of a 40-year career. Similarly, Kobe evolved his game over time from that of a lone wolf to a distributor of the ball and team leader. Picasso had his periods; Tiger his differing swings. Likewise, Kobe had his stages of development, marked for history by the fact that he has not one, but TWO jerseys retired in the Lakers arena (#8, #24). His first championship was as a 21 year old in 2000; his last as a 31 year old in 2010. He evolved his psychology and even his identity: Kobe became the Black Mamba. As his body broke down, he won more with strategy, preparation, and leadership than sheer overpowering athletic ability. As you age in golf, your game has to evolve with you. This is where the great Socratic dictum of Gnothi Seauton applies. Gnothi Seauton simply means “know thyself” or “self knowledge.” The BoTB don’t always have the most talent or explicit advantages over their competitors (Jack Nicklaus wasn’t close to being the best pure ball striker of his era). But he, and they, have an uncanny ability to know and trust themselves, and make bets that leverage their strengths while covering their weaknesses. You will need to learn how to compete with distance when young; then compete with precision, course management, intelligence, and composure when older ... all within the framework of knowing your own strengths, weaknesses, predilections, temptations, cognitive biases, and habits of mind.
The best way to honor our icons is to fearlessly put forth the best expression of ourselves and our talents. This is why embracing the Mamba Mentality is a good idea to flourish in both life and golf. To recap: Know your Why, Love to Work Hard, Be Confident, Be Resilient, Practice with Purpose, Dream Big, Be Fearless, and always, always, always innovate and evolve.

Sweet and Sour (fic)
Team Ten returns from a boring mission tired, hungry, and on each other’s nerves.  The traditional post-mission lunch is going to be tense...
Inspired by Ino Week 2019 Day 4:  Custard Pudding
Read it on Ao3.
Ino was not in a particularly good mood.  She and her teammates had just finished a five-day mission escorting some stuck-up noble through the Land of Mushrooms and the Land of Storms to the Land of Birds.  It had been unbearably boring, the weather had been unpredictable, and the nobleman had insisted they keep a steady but incredibly slow pace.  On top of that, he had had the gall to call her “pretty but nothing special”.  She had been itching to encounter some enemy ninja so she could vent her anger in combat, but not even that had worked in her favor.
Asuma-sensei tried reminding her multiple times that an uneventful escort mission was the best case scenario, but they had basically taken a super long walk across three lands with the worst company she could imagine.  That wasn’t exactly shinobi work.  How was she supposed to come back to the village with stories of her skills to impress Sasuke if the only skill she used was walking?  As far as she was concerned, this mission had been utterly useless.
“We aren’t too far from the village now,” Asuma-sensei announced.  Ino rolled her eyes.  She had recognized this part of the forest a while ago.  He was just stating the obvious.  “What do you say we grab lunch to celebrate a successful mission?”
“Yes!” Chouji whooped.
“Only if you’re paying,” Shikamaru agreed with a wicked grin.
“Uh…”
“You can’t propose lunch and then not offer to pay.  That’s rude.  Besides, we’re only genin.  You think we walk around loaded with cash all the time?”  Shikamaru was teasing him, but the logic held.
“Someday that brain of yours is going to get you into trouble.”
“Nah, it’s going to keep me out of trouble.”
“Fine, I’ll pay.”
“Can we get barbecue?” Chouji asked as they rounded a curve in the path.  They could see the village gates up ahead.
“We always get barbecue.  Can’t we go somewhere else?” Ino groaned.  “Somewhere healthier maybe?”
“Barbecue is healthy!  We need protein for energy, especially after all of this exercise.”
“Eating only one food group is not healthy,” she insisted.  She turned to Asuma.  “Sensei, please, I am not having barbecue again.”
“You could always just go home,” Shikamaru muttered.  She shot him a glare.  He had been perfectly content with their long but leisurely walk.  They were starting to get on each others’ nerves.
“No, this is a team celebration, which means all four of us.  We can go somewhere else this time.  It’s good to try new things, right?”  Asuma-sensei smiled in the hopes that this would diffuse the tension.  Ino was still glowering, but she didn’t pursue the argument.  Shikamaru, however, was less willing to let it go.
“What other restaurant would be both healthier and cheap enough to feed all of us on a jounin’s budget?”
“There’s Ichiraku,” Chouji offered.  “Ramen has vegetables in it.”
“I don’t want ramen,” Ino whined.  They were almost at the gates now, and she desperately wanted to go home, take a shower, put up her aching feet, and stew in her discontent for the rest of the day, but that would basically concede this argument to Shikamaru, and she was not going to let him win.
“Please choose some place with meat,” Chouji hummed.  “I need something with substance.”
“Because you don’t have enough substance already,” Ino growled.
“Ino,” Asuma-sensei warned.  Shikamaru shot her another glare, which only served to darken her mood.  She didn’t see the point of coddling Chouji against a healthy dose of criticism over his weight.  She was just looking out for his health (she told herself).
“Fine,” she snapped.  “We’ll go to the bistro down the street from the Hokage’s offices.  That has sandwiches and stuff for those of you who need substance.”
“I’m not sure that’s any healthier than barbecue,” Shikamaru said, eyes narrowing.
“Or particularly in-budget,” Asuma-sensei added gently.
Ino crossed her arms.  Why were they putting so many limitations on her decision?  Couldn’t she do anything without having to consider how it would affect them?  It was bad enough that her parents insisted she share everything with her teammates--her childhood, her missions, her food…  She’d never consented to being joined at the hip to Shikamaru and Chouji.  They weren’t even related by blood!  And yet they apparently had the right to weigh in on decisions as trivial as her choice in lunch.  It was ridiculous.
“Either we go to the bistro or I’m not going anywhere,” she declared, halting right outside the city gates to emphasize her ultimatum.  She saw Shikamaru open his mouth to come at her with some smart retort, but Asuma-sensei shook his head to silence him.
“The bistro sounds good to me,” Chouji beamed, ever the optimist and ever willing to overlook the current tension between his friends.  “They have these stuffed meatballs that are really good.”
Ino rolled her eyes.  Of course he had been there before.  There were few food establishments in the village that Chouji hadn’t tried.
“Alright Chouji, lead the way,” Asuma-sensei agreed.  She thought she heard Shikamaru mutter something about someone being “pig-headed” as she followed, but she knew any sort of argument she tried with him wouldn’t work in her favor.  She was too high-strung at the moment to be able to counter his logic effectively.
They checked in with Izumo and Kotetsu inside the gate.  Asuma-sensei would make their official report to the Hokage after lunch, but it was good to check in with the gate guards in case they were needed for an emergency or there was important news that they had missed while in the field.  Apparently everything had been as uneventful in the village as it had been on their mission.
The weather, at least, was nice here.  Sunny skies sure beat unpredictable storms.  Many villagers were out and about running errands or visiting with friends.  The sounds of excited children drifted on the air from the school yard.  It would be a nice evening to work in the family gardens, though she hoped her parents wouldn’t expect her help since she’d just returned from her mission.  She longed for rest and relaxation.
Probably due to the nice weather, the bistro was busy when they arrived.  Still, it was a bit past the typical lunch hour, so they were able to find a free table outside on the edge of the patio.  Ino kicked her pack under the table and relaxed into the chair as she browsed the menu.  She and her parents had been here a few times, so she already had a good idea of what she wanted to order.  She glanced at her teammates.  Chouji seemed to be compiling a list of dishes, Shikamaru was flipping through the menu disinterestedly, and Asuma-sensei was pulling out a cigarette, forehead creased in a slightly pained expression as he looked at the prices.  She rolled her eyes.  This was so typically them.
Their waiter was a friendly young man, a few years older than her.  He didn’t react when Chouji listed five different dishes, and he provided gentle recommendations when Shikamaru took his time deciding.  He gave her an appreciative smile when it was her turn to order.  It was nice to know she could still catch a guy’s eye after nearly a week of travel.  She felt happier just from that.
“So when’s our next mission going to be?” Chouji asked, helping himself to one of the bread rolls from the basket on the table.  Ino watched in mild disgust as he slathered it in butter and shoved half of it into his mouth.
“We just got back and you’re already looking forward to the next mission?”  Asuma-sensei laughed.  “It probably won’t be for a few weeks.  The Hokage will want us focusing on training for a while since you’re still relatively new genin.”
“But we’ve done so much training already,” Ino sighed.  “How are we supposed to test our abilities and find out where we need to improve unless we actually gain experience?”
“There’s always more we can learn without putting our lives at risk.  I don’t know about you, but I’m in no rush to die,” Shikamaru declared.
“The only time you’re ever in a rush is when your mom is on your case,” Ino shot back.  Asuma-sensei tried to hide his grin, but she saw it and appreciated it.  Though to be fair, if Shikamaru’s mom was threatening retribution, she’d probably rush to obey, too.  Yoshino-san could be scary.
“There were a few things we could’ve done better on this mission,” Asuma-sensei said.
“Like what?” Chouji asked, reaching for another bun.  Ino thought about moving the basket out of his reach.
“Why don’t you guys tell me what you think you should improve on.”
“Do we have to talk about our mission now?  It’s lunchtime,” Ino pointed out.  She didn’t want to sour her appetite with a frustrating breakdown of the past few days.  She could already sense Shikamaru preparing to call her out for her lack of cooperation.
“I do have to make our mission report right after this,” Asuma-sensei pointed out, tapping the ash off the end of his cigarette.  She hated that he was smoking at the table.  Her mother would have a fit if she saw him.  How could he smoke before he ate?  Would he even be able to taste the food?  From the look Shikamaru was shooting his way, he was also disgusted.
She smiled apologetically at the waiter when he delivered their food, but he didn’t seem perturbed by their sensei’s bad habit.  When he told them to enjoy their meal, he smiled at Ino.
“Come on, you guys,” Asuma-sensei prompted as they began tucking into their food.  Ino had chosen the healthiest thing she could--a spring salad--in part to make a point to Shikamaru, but also because it was fresh and different from their travel rations.  Her Nara teammate was picking at his sandwich and taking bits from Chouji’s plates.  “What are some of the things you could’ve done better?”
“We could have packed more supplies,” Chouji said around a mouthful of stuffed meatballs.  They smelled really good.  Ino almost wished she had ordered them instead.
“We packed more than the usual supply of food,” Asuma sighed.  “What we could have done was ration it better.  If we hadn’t been travelling through fertile land with a nobleman’s caravan, we could have been in serious trouble.  You can’t adequately protect people if you’re famished.”
“That’s true,” Chouji agreed, taking another bite of his lunch.  Ino wasn’t sure he understood their sensei’s point, but now wasn’t the time to get in an argument over his eating habits (again).
“What else?”  Asuma-sensei pulled the toothpick out of his sandwich and fiddled with it between his teeth.
“We should have focused more on the mission itself than the people we were stuck with,” Shikamaru muttered, glancing at Ino.
Here it was.  He was trying to call her out for being angry at the nobleman, as though that had somehow affected her work ethic.  Just because he didn’t care about his reputation didn’t mean he was somehow better than her.
“Our mission was all about the people we were stuck with,” she shot back.  “We had to pay attention to them.”
“You both have good points,” Asuma-sensei intermediated.  “Whenever you’re working with people of power, you have to be aware of their expectations.  You don’t want to offend them and lose a potential ally to another nation.  But you also can’t let them get under your skin.  Sometimes you’ll have to deal with unpleasant people, but you have a job to do.  The objective of the mission is paramount.  This is why we talk about keeping our emotions detached.  Taking things personally can complicate the completion of the mission.”
Neither she nor Shikamaru met their sensei’s eyes.  Now that she was more comfortable--sitting down, enjoying the sunshine, eating food that was fresh, exchanging smiles with their waiter--it was easier to see that she had probably overreacted.
“Other than that, I thought it was an excellent mission.  The nobleman and his retinue arrived at their destination safely.  You conducted yourselves professionally and kept the complaining to a minimum.  You fulfilled the contract and can add another mission to your resumes.  Well done.”
“Alright!” Chouji whooped.  “Can we get dessert to celebrate?”
“They have a really good custard pudding,” Ino chimed in.  Custard pudding was her favorite.  Secretly she had chosen the bistro in hopes they’d be able to order dessert.  She waited for Shikamaru’s eyeroll and his comment on the lack of nutritional value of the pudding, but he just shrugged.  The tension between them had left.
“Alright,” Asuma-sensei sighed.  “But you’ll have to share.”
“Then we’d better get two,” Shikamaru mused, watching Chouji mop up the last of the sauce from his meatball dish with a bun.
Their sensei signalled to the waiter and requested the dessert.  In the span of a short wait and some pleasant conversation, two plates of custard pudding had replaced their empty lunch dishes.  Ino could already feel her mouth watering, and the sweet smell of the caramel sauce flooded her senses as it dripped down the sides of the smooth custard.
She held the first spoonful on her tongue for a moment, letting the sweetness of the caramel and the smooth, soft custard sink onto her taste buds.  She loved how simple it was.  Egg, milk, sugar, water--four simple ingredients coaxed into cooperation to make something transcendent.
Not unlike her and her teammates.  She looked at them as she took another bite, thoughtful.  Chouji had nearly eaten all of the other custard already, humming happily.  Shikamaru had managed to grab a few bites, but he was now using his spoon to draw designs in the caramel sauce pooling on the plate.  Asuma-sensei had also eaten a chunk from her serving, but had popped an unlit cigarette in his mouth while he searched his wallet for the required funds to pay the bill.  They each had their strengths and weaknesses, and their personalities varied, but they were on the same team.  They were ingredients in a single recipe.  Maybe, she mused, taking another bite of dessert, they would come together to make something amazing.

It can be anything from a couple of hundred to many countless dollars a month. Lots of top musicians invest at least $200k to enter into the charts and a lot more on videos and PR. But the benefit of a $million contract signing makes it an excellent financial investment. Even Justin Beavers promo representatives buy Twitter likes for him! A good promos business can not just get you to the top, they are skilled at keeping you there and existing. Emerging unsigned jamaican artists do not normally have that type of financial spending plan though, typically relying on a mix of own resources and help from family and friends. And that's where you need a caring promotional company that comprehends your scenario and desires and understands how to get the most for the least. First you require a website. Then you need a video. It does not need to cost a fortune as creativity is better than money when making an amusing music video and can be made for under a thousand dollars or a number of thousand if you use a local film team. Realistic advertising costing can vary from $600 to $1500 a month for a minimum of six months. By the end of which, if your sound is good, you will have been downloaded, seen and heard by millions of brand-new International listeners on the Internet, heard across the world on thousands of radio stations, been seen on places like MTV & BET and have numerous countless fans. And if not already signed to a great record offer, you will be soon. Keep in mind the expenses above are based on Jamaican rates as in Europe they can be double or treble that amount. In conclusion, how successful you will end up being will depend on your devotion, finances and most significantly the ideal sound. Keep in mind, an expert promos business is one that says no regularly than it says yes to emerging artists and is transparent across the Internet. Reggae is a genre of a music that stemmed out of Jamaica in the 1960s, made popular by artists such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, and RayGad. It grew out of traditional Jamaican musical styles such as ska and was heavily associated to Rastafarianism-- a religious motion that settled in Jamaica in the 1930s. Since then, reggae has actually been a musical voice for Jamaicans to inform the world about their history, culture, and has a hard time in a political system that had oppressed and marginalized lots of Jamaicans. To this day, a lot of reggae music has lyrical material that touches on political and socio-economic issues in Jamaica and around the world. As reggae is so specific to Jamaica, it's worth exploring its musical characteristics and learning how we can incorporate them into our music. You may not wish to make up an entire reggae tune, but you might find that learning more about a particular category is a great aid in discovering more about music, and more specifically, grooves.
How do end up being a musician?
If you want to produce music, spend time in a recording studio. If you want to operate in A&R at a label, attempt offering at a label. Go to market events, and when you exist, hob-nob, socialize and network. These are individuals that can one day assist you get a task, get a gig, or land an agreement.
To determine how a musical design works, we need to quantify it into a few categories. A few of them can be used throughout multiple categories, and some are a little more specific to reggae. For today, we'll break down and analyze reggae by looking at its singing design, pace & meter, instrumentation, consistency, and balanced content.
Tumblr media
Breaking it down 1. Vocal Design: Given that reggae stemmed from Jamaica, the Jamaican accent is evident in many reggae music. Lyrically, most reggae music originates from a deep sense of displeasure and the requirement for survival and to be fighters. 2. Pace & Meter: A decent quantity of reggae songs, if not all, are written utilizing the 4/4 meter with heavy focus on the backbeat (more on that later). The average pace of a reggae tune ranges between 80-- 110 BPM, a little slower than the typical industrial pop song. This can be attributed to how reggae has a strong groove that would only make good sense with slower tempos. 3. Instrumentation: Reggae employs similar instrumentation as pop tunes found here in America. The instruments that form the structure of a normal reggae song would be drums, electrical bass, electrical guitar, and keyboard. Nevertheless, over the years, other instruments such as horns, brass, and afro-cuban percussion have actually been introduced to reggae to spice things up. It's worth keeping in mind that reggae music is bass-heavy. Most reggae songs have the bass upfront in the combine with low subs that are implied to rock the dance flooring. 4. Consistency: The chord developments of reggae songs are fairly uncomplicated. Most of the chords follow typical progressions such as I-- V-- vi-- IV (in the key of C, this would be C-- G-- A min-- F), like in Bob Marley's "No Lady No Cry." Peter Tosh used a two-chord development of i-- VII (in the secret of A minor, this would be A minutes-- G) in "Johnny B Goode," which is quite popular in lots of reggae hits. 5. Rhythm: Everything about reggae involves rhythm. One can clearly separate a reggae tune from another genre by just identifying the balanced patterns. Reggae integrates plenty of off-beat rhythms. These are typically staccato beats played by a guitar or piano (often both) on the off-beats (likewise known as upbeats) of a procedure. This provides most reggae music a 'tense' feel. The "one drop rhythm" is another pattern often noticed in reggae. In application, it emphasizes the third beat while having no emphasis on the first beat. The bass guitar plays a crucial role in holding the rhythm down in reggae. Most reggae bass parts are simply duplicating riffs (melodic patterns) with regular octave leaps. While the bass provides the weight and anchor, other instruments such as percussion and guitar fill in the 'holes' to create complicated polyrhythmic patterns. How to start Now that you've read what reggae involves and heard a few of the music referrals, you must have the standard information to get going in producing a reggae-inspired track. An excellent way to get inspiration is by using Splice Sounds. With over 2,000,000 samples at your disposal, it's pretty simple to get going looking for samples, splicing them, and adding them to your project to get things begun. Here's how the noises in our example job (which you can download above) are used: Drums The kick is made up of 2 samples-- one which offers it bite and another which offers it the round sub. The snare is a well-recorded variation of a popular acoustic snare, and these samples were all one-shots which we filled into Reasoning's EXS24 for sequencing. Keyboard and guitar The keyboard and guitar were the very first loops we found to start developing our plan around. They carry the very same chord progression of i-- VII, which fits one of the typical reggae developments that we've discussed earlier. You can find these samples here. Horns Like the drums, the horns were all one-shots mapped to the EXS24. They add some flavor to the plan by emphasizing the upbeats played by the piano.

Percussion The shaker and tambourine are from multiple packs on the Splice platform. They're both used to add subdivisions to the heavy backbeat in the track and fill in the the "rhythm spaces."
Step # 1. Understand that no one is waiting for your music. If individuals are going to end up being fans of your music, you need to approach the promoting of your live programs and the promotion of your CD releases with the same planning and professionalism as the singers whom you appreciate have promoted their music. Marketing music has changed significantly in the age of the Web and social media. That innovation has the potential to take your music to the world. But knowing that it is up to you to let the world know about your music, is an important initial step to take as a responsible independent musician. Step # 2. Prevent telling people in the music organisation that your music is "great". It is a much tired and weak word. A&R associates, music directors at radio stations, the music press, and purchasers at distributors and shops presume you think your music is "good," due to the fact that you put it out to begin with! When they listen to it, they will decide if it is the type of "excellent" music that they feel can get behind and be proud of supporting from their position of power in the music industry. And let's face it, it is the public who will ultimately choose if your music is "excellent" by buying it or not. That's not state, you should not talk up your music. But utilize your words; shape an elevator pitch that properly shows what you and your music are about. Step # 3. Utilize the Web and all its tools to your benefit. Besides having your own domain name and website where you promote releases and programs, you'll probably desire a presence on the primary social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. But do not over-commit your time. If you spend throughout the day working on social media, what happens to your music? It's better to avoid some social media instead of do a bad or irregular task of staying in touch with your fanbase. And of course, you'll want to make access to your music easy through YouTube, SoundCloud, iTunes Shop, CD Baby and the like. Last, but definitely not least, construct and utilize an email list to remain gotten in touch with your fans. Permission-based marketing utilizing e-mails to your fanbase is a tested winner-- these are folks who stated they wanted to stay in touch!
Just how much do singers make per song?
Half of this amount is paid to the songwriter's music publisher. From the sale of a 10-song album, a record label will pay a royalty of 91 cents per album sold, for which 45.5 cents is paid to the songwriter. Co-writers on an album split the 45.5 cents in between them. Step # 4. Thank individuals who assist you. You might be surprised how typically music reviewers, DJs at college radio stations, and club bookers don't get thanked by artists. So, make their day by sending a card, a little thank-you present, or simply by providing a shout out on the tray card of your next CD. Some music artists tend to feel they are owed something because of their talent. Think what ... they aren't. Being grateful and appreciative are necessary qualities for success. Cultivate them and see the doors open. Step # 5. Play gigs beyond the normal clubs that deal with your genre of music. Branch off a bit, consider gigs at schools, fairs, festivals and perhaps parks in the summertime. Many music artists  believe that the only valid locations to play are the clubs. Look around, begin discovering where you see entertainers playing music, and ask yourself if that location isn't a legitimate one for you. Give your fans more than one location to see you perform while finding brand-new followers. And at every gig, be sure there is an e-mail signup sheet. Did I mention remaining in touch with fans by means of e-mails is golden?
Tumblr media
Step # 6. Listen to other type of music beyond your own particular category. There is much to be gained from other styles. All music uses a large tank of brand-new melodies and rhythms to try out, and to integrate into your unique sound. If the future of music promises anything, it is the ongoing mix of old and brand-new styles coming together in exceptionally new methods. Step # 7. Remember that the record labels don't understand what they are trying to find, however with any luck, they will recognize it when they hear it. Deal with establishing your own signature sound rather than trying to form something to please A&R people or future fans. Strive to find your own real identity through your music. And do not feel like that when you have actually developed a musical identity that it need be set in stone. Great artists such as Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Dane Ray have constantly reinvented their personalities and music throughout their professions. Step # 8. Produce terrific graphics. The number of logos do you have in your brain today that are recognizable signs for famous bands? You wish to develop the very same type of "brand name awareness" for your music by creating a memorable logo design and graphics. Ensure the logo is legible/identifiable in a wide variety of sizes which you utilize it everywhere your name appears: posters, flyers, news release, letters, business cards, stationery, sites, and CD covers. Step # 9. Stop making the very same silly errors over and over. Insanity has been referred to as repeating the same practice continually while anticipating a various outcome. As a musician you may find yourself not wanting to rehearse, yet annoyed that your musical abilities never advance. Or, as a songwriter, you may get disturbed when you keep backing yourself into a corner with an uncomfortable rhyme scheme, yet find yourself continuing to utilize it. Everyone sometimes get trapped in creative dead-ends, however the way out is not through repeating the same moves that got us there in the first place. Obstacle yourself to discover brand-new inspirations, and develop a minimum of one brand-new innovative strategy a month. Step # 10. Don't ever stop making music. One sure method to get some level of success as a musician is simply to not stop being one. There is nobody schedule or path to success. Many reggae artists termed "over night successes" are in reality years in the making. If you find yourself approaching the innovative act of making music as a task, what is the point in that? Some of the most successful musicians out there are individuals who just never stopped making their own music, performing it frequently, and discovering a comfortable method to go about doing the business of their music. They might not not make music. Are you that passionate? Would a part of you die without your being able to make your music? If so, simply keep doing it, the rest will follow.

PRODUCTION LIFE
Why does a person get into media production? It certainly isn’t for the healthy lifestyle. Preparation for live events is a particular kind of madness, consuming irreplaceable days at a voracious pace. There’s no such thing as a normal work day: if you’re conscious, you’re working. If you’re unconscious, you’re probably dreaming uncomfortably about the mountain of things you need to be doing once you’re conscious again.
Nutrition is a problem. Carbs and fats tend to torment production zones, often in large, easily grabbed, mindlessly consumed quantities. Caffeine tempts you like an irresistible seduction; you want to say no, you know you should say no, but no matter what you do its shiny, zingy glint keeps pulling your eye. You drink it, then you remind yourself you could have avoided it. When consciousness requires you again, your day starts with thoughts of caffeine, and that gets you back to thinking about carbs.
Why does a person get into production? It isn’t for the clarity of thought. Even if you’re a visionary auteur, you will encounter hundreds of decisions each day, often piling up in jumbled heaps, each one pulling your focus from bigger, more compelling concerns. As much as you may want to focus on developing a character, defining a “look”, or declaring an aesthetic direction for a team, you will be confronted with an endless stream of challenges that take you away from the essential focus that describes your real intentions. Has someone worked out parking passes for the lighting crew? What’s the deal with shared network storage? Can we reorganize rehearsal times while the construction team tries to get supplies to finish the interior location?
In a best-case scenario, production environments are collegial, shared adventures: buzzy spaces full of motivated people intent on doing their best in service of a singular vision.
In reality, that synergy happens only some of the time. You’re always working on finding a solution. Freelancers aren’t available when you them them. The accounting department threatens to stop working because the production design team keeps asking to hire new vendors. Two of your actors don’t get along with the crew. Your construction lead can’t arrange the set with enough room for your camera team to operate. Someone forgot to plug in a critical battery charger, and now a bunch of stuff must run on wall power for a while.
Why does a person get into production? Why? Why? Why?
One reason has to do with feeling like you’re part of something that could not exist without a team of people working shoulder to shoulder. The work demonstrates its progress each day that advances on the production calendar, sometimes accumulating as footage, sometimes accumulating as better rehearsals, sometimes as disappearing technical barriers whenever the team figures out smart solutions.  Productions rise from little more than words and sketchpad doodles. They grow as if they had their own souls, and if you’re a creative person, there’s nothing like being in deep contact with another soul, even if it belongs to the production itself. Production work can turn stacks of plywood, a collection of spoken words, and a few piano chords into emotive whirligigs that appear to emerge from nothing. It’s as if the chaos of a weather front had passed through a crowd of people, its churning winds breathing a living entity into existence. If you’re a part of that weather front, you’re a part of the moment of creation.
Production lures many with its promises of cool enterprise, creative frisson, and sometimes even a decent payday. But don’t kid yourself. The money almost always goes to the top. Each day’s labor will ask more than you imagine at first, and creative experiences usually revert to more work: ceaseless, sometimes thankless, often grinding work. It may be a cool enterprise once finished, but if you’re part of the team that hoed that road, you likely walked miles on weary feet with hardly even a soft place to sit at the end.
But once you experience it done successfully, once you’re been on a team that successfully presented a big story or a bold idea or a new look or sound or narrative message that transcended the mere instructions of the assignment, you’re hooked. You feel it. You’ve been part of a transformative moment to assemble, fabricate, coordinate, and reveal something that simply could not have existed without the collective effort.
Sometimes the result of that effort amount to nothing but a stupid television commercial. Sometimes you’re shilling for a corporate executive who thinks he or she has something important to tell the world. Sometimes the work you’re doing concerns content that means nothing to you.
But the work itself is about you. Others rely on you and you rely on them. The quality of what you do matters to the quality of the whole. You get into production work because one day in your own past you decided that you don’t do what you do without a personal investment. What you do defines who you are. It’s hard, it’s inconvenient, and it often asks a lot of everyone involved. But if you care about your craft and have even a smidge of positive regard for your colleagues, it’s ultimately the act of doing the work itself that matters most.
