how many characters do you have in your inbox?

I'm sure you didn't expect a nice long response anon, but that's what you're getting.

Right now I have 50 asks in my inbox, including this one. The last time I completely emptied the inbox was on 5/14. Best case scenario, is that it will take about 2 hours for me to sort through and post the requests to the queue. Once I got over 100 asks in less than a 48 hour period, and straight up spent 4.5 hours sorting through them. Here's why it takes me so long.

I do a basic search to make sure the character in question isn't a minor, and to figure out what their actual name is. I cannot stress this enough, idk shit about 90% of the requests I get. I don't know who that character is. Any mistakes made with names or photos chosen aren't because I secretly hate you and that character, or because I'm being malicious. It's because I've got little to no way to know what's correct. I'm going off shit on wikis, and most of that content is written by a bot nowadays anyways.

For me, the ideal submission format is "[FULL CHARACTER NAME] from [FULL TITLE OF MEDIA]" and that's it. That way I can just copy/paste directly from the ask into google. I have not instituted this as a rule, simply because I can't get people to read what rules I do have in the first place. Idk how much more eye catching that posts needs to be. It's bold, in red, and pinned to the top of the blog. If I put in a requirement for formatting, it would disqualify most requests, and I don't want to do that.

Some people feel the need to editorialize in the request itself, which tbh I mostly ignore. I don't care why you submitted this character. Idk anything about this character. Do whatever. Live your best life.

A random character nickname + acronym for the title is also the worst. I can usually figure it out, but it takes longer. When I've still got 30+ requests to get through, that's frustrating. I think sometimes people will just put the acronym for a piece of media in out of habit, or because they see I've used an acronym at some point in the tagging system. Tumblr does recommend tags, and that's why I might use it. This means that, when an acronym pops up again in the ask, I still don't immediately recognize it until I can remember googling it two weeks ago the last time that piece of media came up.

When it comes to the age of characters, I'll be honest I have much less patience. Sometimes I will google "[CHARACTER NAME] age" and what comes up is a spirited reddit thread, where people are arguing about whether or not the character is 15 or 45. Or 16 or 1500. Or whether or not they count as a minor, if they're physically 13 but actually 120 years old. Or whatever. I just fucking delete those, I'm not dealing with that shit.

I also often have to search the blog or scroll the queue to see if I have done the request before. There's a few video games where I've gotten a bunch of requests, there's a shitton of characters, and the names all blend together. If it's a duplicate, I delete those requests.

Generally speaking though, I try my best to ensure that every request gets posted. Yes even if it's weird, even if it's niche. You can submit characters from that one webcomic, or that one movie you love from 1954. The only requests that get deleted are ones that are 1) duplicates 2) violate the posted rules or 3) are so incomprehensible that I have no way of knowing what the fuck the requester is talking about.

Do you think the show really will be cancelled? And do you think the awful part of the fandom that sprung up from it will go away anytime soon if it does?

tbh I really don't know enough about the show to have an opinion on that. I'm not really interested in hate-watching or lurking in fandoms that I don't belong to LOL so I'm not really on the inside of any gossip about how it's looking behind the scenes and I don't really want to speculate because I know I don't have all the information. I think this question is for people who are more invested or have more industry knowledge than I do!

As far as the "awful" part, if you mean fandom casual normies who travel from fandom to fandom like locusts to harass people until all the creators give up: Yes, they will move on. I think sometimes in fandoms you get like, casual normies who discover there's a subculture of nerds they can harass, and they do that for a couple years until it either gets boring or their personality grows enough to have more productive passions, and there's also fandom lifers who actually like, care about their thing (probably in a ND fashion tbh) and are usually the ones who stick around and make all the content that everyone else wants to consume.

The casual normies also just tend to have such underdeveloped senses of self that they join tumblr bc it's the thing to do, and pick a fandom because it's a thing to do, and they spend their whole time fandoming in such a deep state of denial that this might be a real hobby and there might be real people participating that they just neg everybody and shit on it the whole time for being cringe without realizing that they're here too lol. Like the amount of times a bully has tried to shame someone for being too passionate, and used "it's not that deep" as a conversation stopper, etc. These folks will move on because they're here because they're bored, not because they actually are POSSESSSED by the THING. (and hey, if you joined a fandom because you're bored THAT'S GREAT that's how we all got here in the first place, but don't shit on the carpet lol please be respectful to the space you just intruded upon!)

So a show going off the air isn't going to deter the people who actually love it. I mean, my other fandom is Sheith and that show was A. Terrible, B. Over in 2018, and the fandom is still going strong because a lot of people genuinely love the characters. I'd even say the same of VC book fandom, especially considering how much of the fandom falls off after the trilogy, and that ended like, 30 years ago LOL.

The thing about fandoms is that they're self-generating, right? And if you're one of the deep fandom nerd lifers you'll learn this if you haven't yet. Even AMC fandom; S1 ended a year ago and fandom is going strong. Part of it is the hope and hobby of watching news drip out - SURE! But it's also the fanart and fics and meta and conversation. The season is what, like, 7 hours long? And I'm SURE that the deep nerd lifers have spent way way way way way more hours than that reading fanfiction by now. And fanfics can really supplement a canon and give people ideas and deepen their love of the source. So I'm positive that there are people out there who have been moved to tears by fic and feel so strongly about THOSE stories, as well, and it just deepens their love of the show when they return to rewatch.

From 2016-2018 I exclusively read Yuri on Ice fic and there was only one season. And that season is even shorter! It's like 4.5 hours of canon! But when I think about YOI I am thinking about like multitude of NOVELS I've read about it, not JUST the 4.5 hours of canon, right?

All fandoms are like this. Fanworks are the lifeblood. And even with book fandom's lack of fic, I still feel that the friends I've made are the experience here, and how we can chatter all day & night about Armand forever and never get tired of it because we're all ND weirdos lol. I mean my Armand friends and I just spent a week in New Orleans together, it was the best! And as a fanfic writer, I will ALWAYS want to dedicate my free time to writing stories and talking about the blorbos, and I share those stories because fandom is self-generating and I want to do my part in keeping it alive. People create stuff and make friends and stick around well past the death of canon because they are POSSESSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I hope that one day when the show is finished that the bad actors get bored and move on and the creators and true fans stick around and keep making stuff, because bullying people and being a cunt uses up a LOT of energy that could be better spent on productive and creative hobbies when they're ready to heal themselves and grow up. It's just not sustainable! :)

Final Fantasy VII: Machinabridged Episode 3 Review

The show retreads ground in both theme and content.

Final Fantasy VII: Machinabridged has, in its third episode, already come across one of the worst aspects of Final Fantasy VII’s story: it was somewhat repetitive in places. And while FFVII’s story isn’t too repetitive by videogame standards,1 its repetition could be incredibly damaging in most any medium, and the webseries, with its emphasis on short and accessible content, is the medium where such repetition is almost guaranteed to be deadly to the pace and progression of the show.

So it’s a genuine feat that Takahata101 has managed to keep the pacing of the third episode nearly as tight as the first, and at a solid pace for any webseries. It moves quickly from beat to beat, and joke to joke, and (thanks in very large part to the editing of MasakoX) none of the beats feel repetitive, even though we’re treading a lot of the same ground that was covered in Episode 1.

It also doesn’t hurt that the episode is held together with the theme of retreading old ground. Cloud reminisces about his childhood with Tifa, realizing that nothing at all has changed between them as they’ve grown older, and even as he’s grown smarter. Barret’s temper causes the crew to miss their station, and they literally must retread a road they’ve already traveled in order to get to their destination. In the Mako Reactor, Cloud hallucinates Zack’s voice again, has to plant the bomb again, and must see the President of Shinra (his former employer) once more.

Of course, the twist comes as we find that President Shinra, a clearly antagonistic and villainous figure, doesn’t remember Cloud in the slightest, enforcing the idea that our protagonists’ retreading of the past is what separates them from the antagonist, which makes all of the similar beats feel worthwhile. And then, the episode is capped off with a thematically poignant callback, in which Cloud angrily twists Tifa’s catchphrase against her.

1Final Fantasy VII is a Japanese Role-Playing game with anywhere between thirty and sixty hours of gameplay for an average person, and so repeating areas and having semi-similar missions is forgivable because the wealth of content overall makes up for that repetition significantly.

The “12 hours later” “12 hours earlier” gag was magnificent. It also pretty clearly states the theme of the episode, letting us know exactly what’s going to happen at the end of our story, and making us sit through it anyway.

Cloud: “You guys threw your morality out the window a long time ago, didn’t you?” Tifa: “Cloud stop being a pussy and come blow up private property with us.”

Patron: “Excuse me, aren’t you a little too young to be working at a bar?” *cocks gun* Marlene: “Aren’t you a little too old to be asking stupid questions?”

TW: ANXIETY AND PANIC DISORDER TALK

Well, they said it would help to write things down, and my therapists said that too. I should do it. And what happened?

It's really easy to explain. 8 years ago… I think it was 8 years ago, I got an anxiety disorder. I went to therapy and it got better. For 5 years I was healthy, no problems, I could do what I wanted and go where I wanted. Then January 2024 happened… I had a relapse… but not a mild one. No, I got punched in the face with the anxiety disorder. And damn, that was hard. I'm very lucky that I have friends and family who helped me so much. Because that was the next level. I didn't just get scared of the train and new things I didn't know (that was 8 years ago when I had panic attacks). No, I had panic attacks about everything. Car journey, train, plane, to be home alone, outside, supermarket. EVERYTHING. I thought I was going crazy. So what did I do? I went back to therapy. Because I'm in the last semester of my bachelor's degree…yap…. best timing ever. But I've fighted. And what can I do after 4.5 months. I can drive a long distance with someone in the car, a short distance on my own. Before, I drove a route alone that was 8 hours long…. but I will come back 100%. I can go to the supermarket on my own, I can go outside on my own. Ehm…I can drive the bus on my own again. I can stay home alone, even stay home alone for a few days. But the train…hm…that thing is still damn scary for me. And well, I can't train on a plane because there's no money…

To explain what my panic and anxiety attacks are like, because I've heard that everyone feels about that differently. For me, it's not that I feel like I'm going to die. No, during a panic attack I feel like I'm going crazy and can't breathe. Then my flight instinct becomes very strong and I have to get out immediately. I feel like I'm locked up somewhere and can't just go out as I please. So yes, the problem with the train and the plane… when you have the feeling that you're locked in there…. I also know that nothing will happen to me. But the feeling I get is so awful. My body burns and aches so much that I think I'm going crazy. And to be honest, I'm also embarrassed that I'm going to start crying in front of people.

My anxiety attacks are a little different. I get pain in the centre of my chest. It starts to burn as if I have a bad sunburn there. And my brain just switches off and concentrates only on the fear. My fear is then being alone. That I'll do something stupid if no one is with me. And then my fear of loss kicks in. My fear of loss relates to my mum. She loves travelling and will be going away again soon. I don't want her to worry and I want her to enjoy her holiday. My fear of loss is getting stronger again at the moment. I hope that I can find a good solution in the next therapy session.

Of course I know a lot of things that help against anxiety and panic, but unfortunately I don't always remember them. But I think I'll make a list of what helps me next time. I hope that I will then forget less of what helps me. And maybe it will help someone else too.

Along with him losing tons of people others did too Vijay lost 0.5% over the past few days and then on island he lost 0.7% which is not that bad for him tied to this oaf. The total number went from 8.5% down to 6% roughly and that's globally and they are weakening you can see it at fisherman's village and try and do things to him it didn't work and he got stuff out and really he got stuff out about the money and who is messing with him he could see them stepping forwards and that's who we have to deal with and we have to try and get him stuff for real a couple other things we are watching here and we know what's going on and we see a pattern of abuse that we don't like and we're going to start removing people and the pseudo empire is too and we're going to remove people repetitively until the situation improves and we do mean it we are sick and tired of these two living here and they're going to be out of here shortly Emily is up in arms and Dave is up in arms about Trump and I'll get him out and then people go after him like his sister wife but mainly it's going to be the husband of Emily blunt who wants to take over the other side to make sure nothing happens. -Florida is evacuating and yes another news and they are evacuating a lot of people. They had a ton of people get campers today purchasing them. New and used but 90% were new. They have a huge huge lot of them that are cameras to be used by FEMA and they're going to be confiscated by the state or federal government and sold to people for housing here they didn't use them and they are firing the FEMA people finally and that the a****** clones and there's a lot of them doing stupid s*** like that all over the world are getting fired today and yesterday usually and additionally we were at 18% of 17% this morning and 3% got up all day long and plan to move out some of them are planning to move tonight about 0.03%, but 90% of that 3% will move out tomorrow morning early and it is Sunday and it's a good day to leave and if your destination isn't too far it's not bad they all plan to go to Alabama or Mississippi or Louisiana and it's not far or a day trip and Monday is a real slow day in the office hardly anyone there and that went out by the way people start saying he's like staff either all pushy assholes and boy this stage your guy's a prick I need somebody to shut him up and get him out of here pack him up in a box I don't care. Tomorrow morning the percentage in Florida will have dropped to 14% and that's pretty low but not low enough and they're only some layoffs on Friday but they're pretty important and tell you the truth they were kind of pivotal and their key positions that some of these people had for being real jerks to our son cuz he wants the boss's job it looks like the boss is involved in getting rid of them cuz they didn't do anything to stop it and it's across the board in all the offices of Charlotte county and the two towns they were laying off people oh three or four for department each department has 15 people or so and it's going to be over for them

In other news the Midwest is evacuating again as we said a 50 MI on both Rivers each side of the river and they're leaving permanently they can't hack it or handle it don't want to it's only a hundred miles to the wedge thing that's up north. And it's like this dip down. And Trump is taking hits and his people here in punta Gorda all over the place actually they're tired of hearing from him and a softening him up and trying to take more stuff here in the Western hemisphere it's time to 45% this morning and his taxes and cashless have lost 10% and they're capturing people that's what you're hearing so 55% and we expect probably 10% more and tomorrow the Eastern hemisphere is going to get hammered we think is bad as 20% and they're going to be out and that's the end of them after that it's going to go real fast. Absolutely! Not super fast, but I keep all the comment alerts in a folder of 'not yet answered' and move them from that folder when I've responded. In general the longer/more detailed the comment the more I try to give a very nice reply because I appriciated the comment. That can be hard to do without spoilers or leaving people to interpret the story how they like, sometimes.

absolutely butterfly. I mean everyone dies. It's super tragic. Only time I really sat down to write an angst fic

probably Cooking for a Cutie (hannigram x queer eye). I mean, Will gets actual help, the Fab Five are wholesome and in character, and it's really just happy all is well vibe in general.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not on Ao3. I used to post on ff.net as well, both when I was a younger (and less good) writer, and got hate there. Even on Shinra Tensei when I used to post it there. Which I stopped. Because ff.net in my experience had so much haters compared to Ao3, where I've gotten criticism, yes, but not hate.

9. Do you write smut?

Heh. Yeah. Though often they are shorter fics that are centered around the sexual tension, with some exceptions (like my Steddy Hands fic) and for my big novels who are more dystopian vibe I don't write smut, because it doesn't fit. It has to fit the plot/themes of the story.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you have written?

A bit - I wrote a good omens/sandman crossover, and the aforementioned hannibal/queer eye crossover. But they are not very crazy, honestly, keep to both of their canons as much as possible, too. I wouldn't consider them crazy (though the second one more so than the first).

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yeah! A couple of times, all of them Hannigram, I think. All of them in Russian at the Russian fic site, and they asked permission and I linked to that fic site too. I even went their once to read the comments there hihi

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Nope. I did do a collab once where someone made art and I wrote fic. That was nice, but honestly not my favourite experience, especially the deadline attached to it. Same reason I've done a zine once but aren't a fan of it (for me) or those weekly prompts thing or whatever. I want to write when my muse is on, when I have time and energy for it, otherwise it isn't fun anymore. Co-writing a fic would also only be pressure for me.

14. What's your all time favorite ship?

Hmm... honestly, I think my favourite thing to write is the dynamic between the protagonist and the fucked up world they live in (maybe personified through a saviour or villain). So... yeah?

15. What is a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I have two I want to finish but fear I'll never have the inspiration for again - one is a CR RPF fic that I have the second (smut) chapter half-written for, but I wrote such a long time ago I would have to re-write the whole thing, and I'm not sure I want to anymore. Second is a TMA JonElias fic I've written 4.5 out of 5 chapters for and I just don't have the muse for anymore. Maybe I'll finish the second one someday, but I'll probably won't finish the first.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Difficult for me to say about myself, lol. Uh. Worldbuilding, I think, and character voice? And fight scenes, or at least that's what people like about my Naruto fic. It also depends a bit on the thing I write fanfiction for. I'm honestly not quite sure. I'm not good at naming my own strengths lol

17. What are you writing weaknesses?

Writing things in too many words / using too many words, including over-used unnecessary words I think. Or worldbuiling something an obvious way and then missing an obvious question. Although that last one is also style, I don't worldbuild everything to the detail.

18. Thoughts of writing dialogue in another language in fics?

Not a fan, honestly. It can be done well - a very small couple of lines in another language said by a random not-even-minor character with the translation at the end of the chapter or otherwise somehow provided. But it can mostly be confusing and cause me to scroll up and down annoyingly.

LOL Jonas Brothers self-insert fic in my native language which thankfully never saw the light of day HAHA

20. Favorite fic you have written?

Oh most certainly my life's work Shinra Tensei and the sequel Bansho Ten'nin. Not only my biggest and longest fic, but also the one I love most. Which is why I started writing it around like 2015 (posted first chapter in like 2017) and am still writing it, and finally moving into the 4th and last arc soon.

some thoughts from discord:

the burn thing confused me because i thought solus was claiming that he saw the religious wars and summonings that drained the burn in person because that's a contradiction azys lla was built over 5000 years ago which means the burn has been there was over 5000 years and summonings were only possible again starting 15 years ago but solus starting his invasions like 40 years ago. however it all makes sense when i realized he just lied. As we found out in this patch the burn is from the creation of azys lla when when they needed to cut off the aether to the chunk of land that theywanted to send up into the sky. claiming the burn was from primal summonings was just solus's excuse for invasion and subjugation.

i actually really like how propaganda and garlean propaganda specifically is dealt with in stormblood. foldora especially like her family bought into it full stop that if only they sold out the other ala mhigans they would have a place at the table and of course we see the lies that always was like when even full citizenship doesn't move the solder standing 20ft away to intervene when her father is stoned to death by angry ala mhigans. the fact that she knew that she would have to work harder to prove herself equal to a full blooded garlean and still went into the military to perpetuate the empire really shows she believes the propaganda.

I do like the interpretation that the garleans empire was built in part to break the seal on silvertear. it makes a lot of sense given how much emphasis has been given to the battle of silvertear falls and gives an answer to why it was so important both for the ascians and empire and for midgarsormr and hydaelyn.

Thinking things over some of the supplementary or side quest information really recontextualizes Stormblood. For example in 4.0 Zenos with a katana is iconic that's his weapon it is even part of how to recognized that he's body-hijacked some poor elezen, but then we learn that he only learned about katanas a year ago when he slaughtered the Doman rebellion. Which means he's only been using and collecting them for less than a year. Katanas are not an intrinsic part of his character, they're a whim which also makes his skill with them that much more impressive. Yotsuyu is another example, from the novella sidestory we learn she literally was just a random prostitute she had absolutely zero administrative, management, or leadership experience. Zenos just yoinked a random prostitute and made her governor of a whole country on a whim. I'm surprised Yanxia wasn't more on fire and starving.

Yes, There Are Two More Sections Now In The Document

You know, it's those little facts that make a difference between knowing MS word and "knowing" MS Word.

I wrote a short piece a while ago on "Section Printing". Here is a portion from the article.

"Each piece of a large document will have its own separate section. The main part of the document, will have its own section, the cover page that is vertical aligned center, the TOC, TOA, Index of terms depending on the length, might have their own section or individual sections, a portion of the document with a wide financial table in "landscape" will have its own section as well as the Exhibits in the back."

1. When you go to print, you can type in for example S5 which means print the 5th section of the document which may be a particular exhibit or S3 which may be the main part of the document or S4 which may be that wide financial table so you have a way to target a piece within a large file. S1-S4 will print from the first page of Section 1 to the last page of Section 4."

The essence of the article shows that when a document is segmented into various sections you have the ability to target what you need.

But, when the "Index of Terns" is generated, after the TOC or after the TOA (depending on Litigation vs. Corporate), the finished product always adds 2 more Section breaks to the mix. Meaning, it surrounds the finished product with a "Section Break Continuous" above and below the finished Index of Terms.

This now adds two more section breaks to the overall count and when going to print what used to be Section 3 will now be Section 5 and so on. Your exhibits which are segmented into separate sections will also be affected and Exhibit A which might have been Section 4 is now Section 6 so you need to be aware that after you run an Index of Terms your Section numbers will change by 2. Your “Status Line” at the bottom of your screen will serve to alert you and help you to target a particular Section(s) of your document for printing purposes.

"Are you excited to move?"

I probably said yes, as that's the simple answer. Which is also the answer everyone wants to hear. But the truth is, I don't really know.

There are parts of me, that have ached to be back in Maine, every time I've left. In the most dramatic explanation: I feel as though the New England ocean is in my blood, and I am constantly feeling the distance between the ocean in me, and the ocean it came from. My first love was the rocky coast line and I'm always wondering how she is.

At the same time, I grew up begging to get out. The best decision of my life was moving 9 hours away, clawing my way out of my homelife. I ran away. And I've been figuring myself out ever since. I learned to softly care for the pain I grew up taking on and pushing down. I never imagined I'd go back. I had done too much work on myself, for it to be worth coming home.

Until, they all moved. States and states away. And like a slow whisper, I asked the question I never would before. It took a while before I said it out loud. And even then, I didn't know how to make it real. Until my therapist said "I think, you just tell people you're moving. And then, you'll be moving." And that's exactly what I did.

Am I excited to move back home? I'm nervous. I'm afraid if I allow myself to be too excited, I'll build it up beyond itself. I'll place too much expectation on a small coastal town. But I also wonder, will holding myself back from being excited, keep me from being open? If I'm holding back expectations, will I be actively creating my reality to be lesser?

This is something I find myself doing with a lot of things. I hold myself back to suspend hurt. And in the end, I feel like my life and experiences lack excitement and color.

How do I find the balance there? I don't want to expect moving to Maine to change my life in "wild and precious ways", and then be disappointed when a Tuesday is still a Tuesday. And I'm still bad at doing my laundry, or getting to work on time. But I don't want to tell myself to expect 50% and only open the door to 50%. Only see grey, because it's all I'm willing to let myself see.

I'm hoping to figure that out in the next 4.5 months. Maybe I don't need to find the balance. Maybe this is a chapter of my life where I need to open up to...imbalance. Excitement. What does it feel like to expect it all? To go looking for it all? To leave the door wide open? To turn all the lights on? To be unabashed?

Almost a year ago, I did 100 sun salutations to ring in the new year and the word that kept coming to my mind, was hungry. I later told my therapist, that I was hungry, for being hungry.

I know it will take practice. But I want this year's mantra to be hungry and open. I want to not only ask for more, but I want to repeatedly let more in.

How do I do that? Do I just start telling people I am?

It has been a number of years (a little over two to be precise) since we last covered a short film here on TheJackSmit.com. It's also been a very long time since we put a spotlight on new Northern talent breaking into the scene. But when the fine folks at Colossal Productions reached out to us with their latest short film, having witnessed the company's inception a little over three years ago in the production offices of UCLan's Media Factory, we just had to cover the latest short from Callum Wilkins and his team. Having previously co-directed documentary shorts like 2019's Breaking Bread (about the Laine family bakery in Blackpool) and made a full feature film with independent murder mystery The Hanged in 2021 (alongside Colossal co-founder Matthew Reese), his solo directorial debut deals with some heavy topics that have dominated the news cycle over the last 18 months: the prospect of nuclear war.

What Wilkins has done is blend a newly written voiceover with archive content in a way that tells a powerful, personal, yet timely story given the world we currently live in, one that shows the bitter reality of war and the hope that the nightmare of nuclear warfare ends for future generations. With references to the Manhattan Project (a subject which will be talked about in depth by a certain major Hollywood picture next July) that lead to Hiroshima, and the ‘Doomsday Clock’ which gave the film its name, it is obvious he has done his research, and the same goes for the choices of archive material throughout (hundreds of hours were spent in the Pond5 and Prelinger archives according to the press kit) - on visuals alone it tells the story in an emotive way, even without any new additions to suit this era of cinemagoing. Elisha Mullins' score hits all the right notes, and I have to mention the original sound design of Ben Fairhurst - even though the screener copy was a stereo mix, even upscaled to 5.1 surround, it provided the immersion needed to hammer home this story.

Continuing with the theme of using Northern talent, Peter Jakeson provides that voiceover, having worked with Wilkins on The Hanged, he just provides the right gravitas for a piece like this on his voice acting debut no less, adding to the hard hitting themes of the short; clocking in at a little under 10 minutes, what Unto Midnight does is create a topic for discussion - which is what a good film of any length should do. Yes, this might not be an easy film to watch in this day and age (what with one thing and another), but from an editorial standpoint, shorts like this in a post-Ukraine invasion age are what the film festivals will be looking at as they start to program for 2023 and beyond. What ultimately started out as a third lockdown project (Wilkins has spoken of pre-production starting in January 2021) has proven why cinema can be powerful and timely. 

THE VERDICT

Unto Midnight proves that you don't necessarily need 90 minutes to tell a powerful story. With well thought out use of archival materials, sound design that hammers the story home, and an incredibly well written and delivered voiceover, Wilkins has potentially got a major festival success, maybe even the start of an almighty career behind the camera on his hands.

please explain the 8hr victorious video to me 🙏

omg yes i am delighted

the 8hr victorious video is the latest installment in a miniseries by youtuber Quinton Reviews. the first video in the series (kind of*) is "ibinged icarly", a 4.5 hours long video in which he reviewes the first 3 or 4 seasons of icarly. (i'm assuming you know icarly and victorious? if you dont theyre nickelodeon teen sitcoms from the late 2000s-early 2010s). iirc his goal is to review every single piece of media relating to icarly, up to the icarly revival that aired last year. this includes victorious bc a) they take place in the same universe, and b) they share a spinoff. so at this point the series includes 2 icarly videos (8 hours combined), and 2 victorious videos. the first victorious video came out 4 months ago and is 5.5 hours long, and it was also kind of a big deal on tumblr. the second one came out last week and it is 8 (!!!!) hours long.

the thing is - and he talks about this in his videos - victorious was such a strange phenomenon because nobody seems to remember it for what it really was. people remember it and talk about it all the time, but the version of victorious that lives inside everyone's heads is wildly different than the actual show. so i imagine this is the main cause of people's reaction, everyone is collectively realizing a sitcom they think of kinda fondly was actually really really messed up. also the fact that so many of us had watched an 8 hour long video, which is a part of a series that is now at 22 hours, is wild.

on a more personal note, i actually do remember victorious as being Very disturbing. so this experience is sort of therapeutic for me, bc i get to relive moments that made me really uncomfortable as a 14-year-old with the understanding of why exactly they were so wrong. and it's also validating to know i was right in the way i felt.

but the main thing is that these videos are Great. i highly highly recommend them to everyone who watched those shows.

* the first video i watched from his series is the icarly video, which is kind of the first one but is also kind of not. episode 0 of this series is a video he did almost a year ago about fred, where i imagine he reviewed fred's nickelodeon sitcom, which i had honestly never heard of.

Dark haired man sat on one of the branches looking down on the inhabitants of the forest. A quiet rage penetrated to his bone, while his red eyes continue watching the witch wander around his home for several days in row. To the uninitiated observer, he seemed impartial, unbothered. However, his stiff shoulders and upright back revealed how annoyed he really is.

When he first saw her, he didn't pay much attention to her. Yes, it was uncommon for someone to come so deep into the forest, but sometimes it did happen. Most of the time, however, it didn't last long, and the same evening the visitor came they also disappeared. But she... She was here even the day after and the next day too, staying the whole night. It was four days ago since he last zigzagged in the air between the trees. He missed his freedom. He missed flying. It was his joy; it filled every cell of him with pure bliss. The inability to fly freely for several days in a row so as to not reveal his existence to a stranger was a suffering for him.

He couldn't figure out what the young woman wanted to do in the middle of the forest, where daylight would shine through the trees only for a few hours a day. She seemed to be looking for something, but he wasn't sure what that something was. One day she picked up one of his fallen feathers, the next day he saw her feeding the Thestral, the next day she discovered Niffler's residence and the day after she brought him silverware and a watch. She played with him for the rest of the day.

She was kind to every creature she came across. Even the shy and fearful fairies liked her. A thorn of jealousy pierced him when he saw how easy it was for her to befriend them - they ignored him even after a month of giving them endless treats.

He didn't know why, but he enjoyed watching her. Maybe it was because he hadn't seen a person in a long time, or because he wondered what she really wanted. But it was definitely not because he liked her carefree smile and her playful nature. 

Or maybe that was exactly why he decided to help her.

He noticed the manticore long before she did. He tried to warn her discreetly with the cones he was throwing to the ground, but she didn't seem to react. She continued to hum a melody that had been playing in her head for several hours. Frustrated, he grabbed one of the branches and aimed directly at her head. He heard her grunt in pain as she started stroking the painful spot, but it served its purpose. She turned around her axis, trying to see the culprit, who dared to throw a branch at her so shamefully when she saw the hungry beast lurking behind her.

He thoughtlessly pressed the woman to his chest and carried her to the safety of his home. Only when he released her from his hold he did realize what a serious mistake he had made; now she knows where to find him, where he lives. And he has no idea what she's going to do with this information.

His heart was furiously pounding in his chest as he watched the scene unfold below. The young woman tried to pull her wand out of her robe, but she was unable to do so in a sudden surge of fear. With his predatory eyes from the height of the trees, he watched her eyes widen in horror as she realized she was completely defenseless. She stumbled over her own legs as she tried to escape the hungry creature. But it was useless to her - the manticora catching up with her in one long step, its claws running down the girl's back, trapping her on the ground under Its heavy paw.

Before he realized what he was doing and could stop himself, he bounced sharply of the branch he was standing on and plunged headlong into the manticore. He buried his claws in its exposed back, leaving deep bloodied grooves. The manticore wailed in pain, but before it could take revenge on the young man with its tail, he was long gone.

He learned not to trust people, especially to wizards such as yourself. He did not intend to make the same mistake as his parents once did and pay for it with his life. But before a wave of grief and rage swept over him, he forced his memories back into his subconsciousness. Instead, he decieded to focus on you.

You were dressed in a tight-fitting black cloak, your hair was pulled back by a tall ponytail, and you were holding your wand in a shaking hand. Your dilated pupils reflected the faint light of the stars, and you stared straight at him. He wanted to hide from your piercing sight.

“Are you done staring?” He asked you, but you didn't seem to notice his words. Instead, your eyes darted all over his body and he began to feel uncomfortable. He straightened nervously and cleared his throat loudly, hoping to divert your attention from his appearance to his words.

“Who are you and what are you doing here?” Your eyes were focused on something behind him, he thought: probably on my wings, but his voice caught your attention.You looked at him, for the very first time really at him, your eyes wide and magnetizing like two wells, stared straight at him. And then you spoke; he heard your voice for the first time, and yet it seemed as if someone familiar had spoken to him.

“I’m Y/N. And for your second question... Circumstances at work brought me here.“ You are hiding something, that much he could tell. But he wasn't one to pry when you clearly didn't want to say more. “And what is your name?” You asked the curiosity evident in your voice. In the interest of his own safety and peace of mind, he should not answer your question, yet some incomprehensible force in him forced him to open his mouth. He wanted you to know. Was it because he wanted at least one person to remember him before he disappeared? Maybe yes.

“Talbott.”

“Nice to meet you. Thank you for saving me back there. If it wasn’t for you...” Your voice broke at the end of the sentence, but you still gave him a gentle smile. He didn’t know how to answer so he stayed quiet.

“So...” He began, rubbing the back of his neck and peering at you with those magical deep iris of his.

“So?” You smiled at him. He could feel the corners of his mouth rising to mirror your smile, but he resisted. Instead, he proceeded to noisily clear his throat, avoiding your gaze. You stared at him confused but at the same time utterly mesmerized.

“Do you have a place to stay? Or did you decided to live here like a homeless girl that lost everything?” His words were crueler than he had originally intended, but he can't just take them back.  With a discomforting feeling in his stomach he watched your smile fade. Despite being hurt a little bit you held his gaze.

“I have some free time on hand so I walk around here until I have to move on. I don’t live nearby so in the meantime I am staying in Hogsmeade.” 

Talbott nodded in understanding and looked down where the manticore was walking in circles around the tree where his home was. It still did not accept the loss of its prey. 

“Maybe you should stay here for a little bit... At least until it’s safe to go.” He says calmly but his entrails contracted uncomfortably. You go stand next to Talbott to lean over the railing and you look down as he did a few seconds ago. There you saw the beast roaring in anger looking up at you. Your tender scent attacked his olfactory cells, and he couldn't resist the urge to lean over and inhale your fragrance.

“I don’t want to be a burden.” You shook your head yet you didn't tell him you were hiding a broom in your bag that you could easily summon with accio and fly to Hogsmeade at any time. At the bottom of your heart, you secretly hoped that you could stay with the mysterious young man a little longer.

“You aren’t.” He asnwered a bit too soon. Your eyes widened in surprise and you felt how the blood rushed into your face. One sheepish smile mirrored the other one skittish behaviour.

After the awkward silence he invited you inside and this time, to his relief, you didn’t refuse.
