BOOKS

The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle. I only have one Sherlock novel left after this one. I think this is the most famous one? One of the cases I've seen actually adapted. I think Watson's POV is quite well done in this one, with his limitations ~forcing the reader to look further if we want to deduce... anything lol.

We Will Devour the Night by Camilla Andrews. I posted a longer review here, so I'll only say that I wholeheartedly recommend it!

Emma by Jane Austen. I first read this novel over a decade ago; story-wise (and, especially, romance-wise), I prefer "Pride and Prejudice" or "Persuasion", but Emma remains THEE Austen heroine for me. The template for many beloved characters of mine lol. And boy, I already paid Close Attention to Emma/Jane Fairfax as a baby gay, imagine now... is there good fic out there in the Austen fandom trenches...

COMICS

The Boy Wonder. This comic was a let down. That'll teach me to have even the tiniest expectatives on anything lmao. The art was cute, but it was like each issue got progressively... meh. Talia's characterisation in particular annoyed me. Yeah, yeah, we all hate Morrison's butchering. I don't think mommifying her is the solution.

JLA: The Queen of Fables (#47-49). I just suddenly felt like rereading this arc LOL. The Queen of Fables is one of my favourite dc villains, as minimally as she appears, because of how delightfully meta this arc is. I want to do something with her at some point...

Stephanie Brown (New Earth). I finished her appearances! (barring some blink-and-you-miss-it cameos, ig). Her Batgirl run was quite a fun romp; maybe not where I would've gone for her character if it'd been in my hands, but MUCH appreciated after fucking War Games, or way too much Dixon writing. I also liked how Lewis wrote her on his Robin run, which was quite good in general. Other highlights were Gotham Knights #22 (which inspired this excerpt!), her appearances in Cass's run (before and after death!) and her friendship with Kara. Unfortunately, I closed with "Convergence: Batgirl" and I have Issues where the places that comic took her journey lmao. That is NOT the future for my new earth!Steph.

Death and Return of Superman. I had read some issues here and there, but this time I sat down and read the whole thing over the course of a few months. Lois is definitely the MVP, the Kents break my fucking heart, and John Henry Irons an interesting character (who I lowkey ship her with after watching a few episodes of the mid CW show, but let's not get into that now xD). I still don't quite get the appeal of Kon as a character lmfao, but he was fun to read here. Also LMFAOOOO at whatever is going on with Lex here. He transplanted his BRAIN into another body?? And is pretending to be his own son??? Wtffffff.

Year One: Batman/Ra's al Ghul. A nice gem I stumbled upon during my Leslie-read. Beautifully written by Devin Grayson. This story is set after Ra's death, and shows his ~revenge from beyond the grave lmao.

Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight: Cold Case (#202-204). Another gem in Leslie's appearances list! I'm including it here because a) I guessed the mystery IMMEDIATELY and okay, it wasn't that hard, there were clues, but I AM A WAY BETTER DETECTIVE THAN U, BRUCE, and b) it includes a plot about Thomas Wayne being unmasked as a suspected serial killer and now I'm having Batman x Prodigal Son thoughts lmfaoooo. Now I want a story where Bruce finds out his late father was a murderer añlsdfjasd.

Villains United. This was in my list of Talia appearances and I'm literally only including it to say a big FUCK YOUUUUUU to Gail Simone for how she writes Jade in Villains United (and in general, from what I know). Literally having her being "well it's fine if this guy blackmailing me kills my daughter because I fucked this guy to get pregnant so I have a replacement child" FUCK YOU GAIL FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU.

Ram V's 'Tec (#1062-1089). Given the current state of comics (not to mention who's the author after this...) I doubt this run will have much impact, but I quite liked it. It added new players but it balanced them out with established characters I'm actually interested about, it had GORGEOUS art (I am fucking OBSESSED with the covers, how some of them mirrored each other to show Bruce's evolution... insane), and good writing. I'll be on the lookout for Ram V's New Gods run, as I want to read more about those characters anyway.

Devin Grayson's Catwoman (vol. 2 Annual #4, #54-62, #1000000, #63-71). This is THEE quintaessential Catwoman, for me. I love love love my Selina as a loner thief with serious commitment issues lmfao. It also got me thinking about doylist influences because I read somewhere that Devin wasn't sure yet about how you went about including cameos, so she didn't really include Batman*, and boy was that fucking great for Selina's character lmfao. She got to have really fun arcs where SHE is showed off. My favourite was the arc with Scarecrow, but in general it was all so great and SO fun.

(*Bruce does appears in one or two issues, in a specific arc which gets a bit meta about the ship lol. The Joker targets her because he considers her Batman's Girl. The story ends with Selina making the Joker believe she killed Batman, knowing how much that'd fuck him up xDD)

thoughts on the fable reboot

-until proven wrong, I'm like 98% sure this fable reboot loosely takes place after fable 1. it's got that fable: legends whimsical style to it (think that's the new artistic direction they're going for with this series- still getting used to it), magic is still around, and technology is at a minimum (hey! bows and arrows are back!). The vibe and stylization is very different than what I'm used to for albion, but no complaints.

-the only reason I confidently think it takes place after fable 1 is because of the castle. think it could be fun if we get to explore the lore behind all the shit that went down there before fable 2. mysteryyyyyyy oh yeah also bowerstone is huge now. not city-huge like fable 2, but the reign of terror has fo sho ended, and civilization is expanding... i think... it makes sense to me

-I do know for a fact that the heroes guild is/was up and running. Humphrey's got his pendent thingy, but I still dunno if this reboot is full-on retconning the lore. I hope not- because sometime after Fable 1, when guild dissipated and heroes became somewhat resented, the place got burnt to a crisp. don't think that's happened just yet- but i don't think the guild is all that popular at the moment And hey- the heroes falling from public grace is in the trailers... kind of (lots on emphasis on the people being sick of them). Would make a cool plot-point to see the guild's fall.

-dunno about the hero of oakvale, tho. he's probably dead. is only memorialized by a number of books, songs, and small easter eggs... maybe a statue if we get really lucky. wouldn't surprise me if this game takes place a few hundred years after fable 1 (there's 500 years between fable and fable 2- there's plenty of time to spare) and he's simply faded from the public consciousness. this Humphrey guy is probably the latest, greatest joe-schmo who just got off the pedestal ...actually the implications of past heroes fading out of favor soon as their glory days are over, and being replaced the next "savior" of albion is kind of depressing

-but also! Oakvale could very well still be thriving if i'm right. No shadow court (yet. would be cool if they made a guest appearance ig), possible location to visit, etc

-not gonna get my hopes up with this one- but potential cameos, or little easter eggs for beloved characters are always awesome. seeing theresa minding her own business for once... he-who-shall-not-be-named as a farmboy... one can dream. pulling up on the side of the road to help a blind lady- possibly a random encounter- only to get a brief, cryptic fortune reading from eldritch gma... ohhhh, the potential... .............but jack of blades reference..? any kind of reference to the court at all? pretty please??? all I need is a random poster on a wall commemorating their defeat, and I'll be happy

-I'm very interested in seeing what story this game's gonna tell. I have a feeling it's gonna lean further into player choice, like how bg3 has wonderfully showcased (not that extent, of course). We might actually get multiple endings, too. Least I hope so. With this new stylistic shift, new studio handling this, it'd be nice to see the narrative truly be affected by our decisions.

Steve enjoyed telling stories of his dearest friends when there were lulls of silence in the house. He liked talking about how Bucky was adjusting in Wakanda or how Sam was rising as a hero or the way Natasha was able to take out five guards before he’d even gotten through the door on a mission. He liked turning to his wife while making dinner and updating her on Wanda and Vision. He liked turning to you and asking if you were sure that you didn’t want to meet the fabled Ant-Man, because he was in town, you know - and he has a daughter, too, you know.

He liked having friends and involving his little family on the circle. He liked that he found a woman willing to let the man out of time be a father. He enjoyed being a step-father just as he always pictured enjoying being a biological father.

And you knew that. You’d been told that. You’d heard it again and again. You knew that Steve loved your mother. You knew that Steve loved you.

So why did he leave you both?

A woman he kissed once compared to the woman he’d woken up next to and said he loved for years and yet he chose the former.

You remember asking him that day. After Sam took the shield with shaky hands and Bucky was leading your poor mother away to the side. You remember asking him,

You jammed your hands in your pockets and kicked at some dirt.

There’s the sound of a clang and you look over, Sam had plopped a wooden cutting board onto the counter before moving to the sink to wash vegetables while you simmer broth. Over summers, your mother’s taken to letting you stay and work with the Wilsons (and by proxy, now Bucky as well). You can see Sam take glances at you out of your peripherals.

“What?”

“You feeling okay?” his voice is quiet despite knowing that Sarah, Bucky, and the boys are all out back, “You’ve seemed out of it for awhile.”

You nod, “‘m fine.”

Sam sighs, “You know I don’t buy that. And if I did, I’d be returning it.”

You chuckle before shaking your head and pursing your lips, “Just fuckin’... sucks. I hate him.”

He doesn’t bother telling you that you don’t. He doesn’t bother trying to get you to push those feelings down and smile for the sake of him, or Bucky, or your mother. He nods to your words and goes on to agree.

“I can’t imagine what you and your mom are going through. I can’t relate but I want you to know I’m here,” Sam dries the carrots as he speaks, “That’s why I like having you here. If you feel like you can’t talk to your mom, I’m always listening.”

“Thanks, Sam,” it’s dry and less than he deserves but it’s the most that your voice, thickened with emotion, can offer.

There’s silence like molasses as Sam moves on to washing potatoes and celery. You continue watching the broth. Stirring when the stillness grows uncomfortable.

“Steve once told me that any story someone tells you in the kitchen is a good one. Said he heard that from you.”

“I did tell him that,” Sam murmurs, “Why bring it up?” it’s gentle questioning but you can tell he wants the bottom line, “Got a story?”

“I’ve just… I don’t know - been thinking a lot.”

“About what?”

You tilt your head to the side slightly, “I had a favorite book when I was little. Called Papa Please Get the Moon For Me by Eric Carle - it was just sorta about this guy who steals the moon because his kid asks him to. It was like my favorite book, even though I didn’t really have a dad to even relate it to…” you stir the contents of the pot as Sam chops carrots, “One day the dog had gotten ahold of it and tore it to shit. I cried, honestly. I could’ve gotten a new one but… I didn’t,” you purse your lips, “My birthday came around and when all the distant family left and Mom was cleaning up, he gave me a present- “

“New copy of your book?”

“Nah,” you shake your head and a smile almost reaches your lips before being smothered down by the knowledge of how he’d left, “it was uh, a model of the moon. He helped me hang it up.”

Sam pauses his cutting to turn and look at you, brows drawn tight in worry.

“He got me the moon,” you bite your lip, staring down into the dark brown broth, “Best he could anyway… but he- he got me the moon…”

“I’m so sorry,” Sam refrains from reaching out, he doesn’t want to scare you out of sharing, “You didn’t deserve that. He shouldn’t have left.”

“I think the worst thing is that I don’t know if I can take it down,” your lip wobbles as the sorrow tucked inside your heart begins beating at you, “I miss him. A lot.”

You turn and Sam carefully takes you into a hug, whispering as he holds you, “It’s okay to miss him. It’s okay.”

You can feel your grip tighten on Sam’s shirt as a sob cracks a final wreck on your throat. Burrowing your face into the man’s shirt, you shake your head and cry, “He was supposed to take care of us, Sam. I thought he loved us… I really thought we would be okay…”

There’s one question that’s lined underneath your broken sobs.

Why?

Why would he leave like that? For a woman he hadn’t seen in years. For a family with no child like you - no child at all. For Peggy Carter and Peggy Carter alone.

It was so, so selfish. Truly. But you wanted the moon and when your father gave it to you, you assumed it was for good.

illusion mv theory/commentary

hey folks, its your local mingi stan with some dumb theories about ateez’s illusion mv! obviously this is just me looking at the mv and going “huh” and in no way is it everyone’s thoughts or whatever, so take it lightly/as you will uwu i’m no regular mv theorist either so don’t look at my words and pick out the flaws, i know i’m not the best kerjgbe

this is gonna get long so check under the tag for that stuff!

anyways! the main thing i want to point out here is that this all has the underlying theme of peter pan (and some mentions of alice in wonderland). that much was pretty clear to me!

they’re all lost boys, on a flying ship, on their way to the fabled neverland

the constant theme of stars (”the second star to the right”) and constant shots of their ship flying in the clouds, along with various ship supplies (binoculars, telescope, maps, etc) show that they’re on some sort of journey

hongjoong, of course, is the captain (staying true to his brand)

you know how when san + hongjoong take out the map, it looks blank to us? i’m pretty sure this is supposed to emphasize the theme of believing is seeing. a lot of movies try to say that if you don’t believe, or if you’re too old (or not childlike) then you can’t see things that use magic.

examples: “i do believe in fairies!” from peter pan, the whole “seeing is believing and believing is seeing” from polar express, heck, even some levels of harry potter, you gotta trust in that magic in order to even get to hogwarts (i mean, platform 9 3/4, floo powder)

wooyoung says “there’s a voice from somewhere saying ‘we party all day’”

a common theme of the lost boys is being fun, rambunctious, and full of life. they look at everything like it’s a kind of game, and they start to lose their sort of... sense of responsibility?

jongho’s lines say this: “a day, two days, three days, four days I don’t know what date it is today...”

they’ve been traveling a while, huh? lost boys don’t grow up. who knows how long they’ve been doing that?

seonghwa goes “where am i, who are you?”

lost boys also forget almost everything about themselves except their names.
