(1/3) Bruh I just binge read Limerence (again) and I wondered how many words it has in total so I pulled out my calculator and I added the words from all of the chapters together because what else would I do with my life and theeeen I googled how many words a book has on average and 👀 "Most adult books are about 90,000 words, and no longer than 100,000 words" alright so Chapters 1-18 has 88.400 words so that would already be a freaking book.

(2/3) Chapters 19-30 has 93.700 words and 31-33 has 62.800 words. In total it has 244.900 words... You literally wrote 2.5 books for us which is insane and it's for fucking free? I mean you actually graced us with 2.5 books. And I know it's a fanfic but whatever it has the length of two books and quite frankly the quality of them too. And people binge read 2.5 books which is also crazy. I mean have you ever considered becoming a "real" author? Cause you got your first customer right here🙋‍♀️😉

First off, the fact that you actually did research and calculated this makes me want to hug you tons because I have the attention span of a two-year-old 😂

So, funny thing (and you may kill me when I tell you this) - the word counts from I think chapters 4-8 are messed up. Meaning, there are more words than what I wrote down 👀👀 Also, because I’m going through my older chapters, and re-editing to better suit my writing (because I was so nervous about writing and posting that my writing was stiff) the chapters have actually gotten longer.

Like I can’t believe I wrote 244.900 words.

You telling me that’s 2.5 books is scary and exciting because I never thought I wrote that much. Like this whole time, I just wrote to write and when you put into perspective like that it’s like holy shit what monster have I created 😮

I think my biggest dream (and I say dream because this will in no way happen), is Yue coming to life in ATLA.

Seeing a full comic strip of her and Zuko seeing each other for the first time and their romance unfolding would make me asjdsdkskadjkasdj - my heartuu. Like the image of Zuko and Yue cuddling in bed that @cloudsong25 drew makes me FEEL DAMNIT.

A few people also mention it, and I always get all giddy thinking about the thought of what would happen if Limerence was canon, and Yue and Zuko ended up together. Like sometimes when my friends and I talk, we forget that Ying Yue isn’t apart of the ATLA universe, and get so sad. I actually broke my friends' ultimate pairing of Maiko and I felt terrible 🙈

And babe, at this point we are friends - I consider all you guys my friends 😂 I have no filter at this point, shit-post all the time and you guys always join in and I love it.

NEW MYTHOLOGIES MENSWEAR

I chose this as anther one of the trend to look at as I really liked the style of the clothing. I also really like the tones used as they contrats, some are vibrant and bright, where as others are neutrals, however, i really like how these two different tones compliment eachother. I also think this style is massivley in trend with the over sized pufffer coats, especially in the colder seasons. This year the oversized look has become so fashionable.

This style is perfect for the urban lifestyle, I think the brands that made and styled this garment are closley linked with nature- i think because the tones within the clothing remind me of autum/spring. I like this because it links to the season and also makes the garment link with outdoors and nature. I love the colour pallets in these garments because it ranges from browns to bright sports wear colours. Thid links to the consumers lifestyle as I think these garments are focused on people who have a actuve lifestyle who are outdoors and wanna look stylish while also keeping warm.

I also love this trend because its very casual and is everyday wear, it also links to street- wear which i love because i think its so in fashion and trendy. I also love how this trend is examples of upcycling clothing- this is good because it’s sustainable, also the new generations are becoming increasingly comfortable with wearinh pre-owned clothing as the ‘vintage’ style is very in trend. I realy like the fact this trend has the retro, vintage look.

The program provides significant resources for responsible care, repair, reuse and resale, and recycling at the end of a garment's life. This links well with this trend as this trend looks at upcycling vintage products and re-selling them. This generation more than ever want to find vintage clothing which is second hand as this has come back in trend. This brand links perfectly with this trend as they both look at upcycling old products to ruduce the waste and help the environment. The colour palletes link quite wel to as theres some bright, vibrant colours however theres also some brown, neutral tones which actually link very well together as they compliment eachother. This brand links well with this trend as it is sustainable, bright and have outter wear garments and their customers will be people who most likely have urban lifestyle.

I created this practical response using photoshop, I chose two of my favourite images from the trend and I collaged them together making one model using the polygon lasso tool. I really like how one is a full body and one is half the body as I think it makes the collage more intriguing and creative. I did this to show off the type of styling and colour palettes they use within this trend. This shows that's it very much casual and outer wear within this trend.

I like this trend as it is bold and has many different styles within it, like outerwear, layered garments, inspired 70s and many more. I will be inspired by thus by styling my outfits, with layers and the right colour pallets. With the colour pallets I will focus on using neutrals, and pastel colours and will make sure my edits are bright nd bold. I was my styling to link with outer wear to reflect the theme im aiming for- cvid-19 and becoming closer to nature. This is also why I chose this theme as it links with nature which I thought would be great as everyone in this pandemic has become closer to nature as we have no other excuse to leave the house.

From flares and bell sleeves to shearling coats and miniskirts, the era birthed an eclectic mix of style influences that evolved quickly over the 10-year span. Skirts got shorter, boots got taller, and a range of style icons like Jane Birkin and Jean Shrimpton helped spearhead some of the most memorable fashion moments of that time. Take a look back at some of the looks that helped define the decade's style—and continue to inspire today. 

I researched this style on Pinterest and BAZAAR website as I think this links to the trend very well and this style has similar colour pallets and style. I think this is really cool and interesting to research because it shows how fashion has developed and changed within these years. I also think that the styles from the 70s like flares, fur coats and bright colour are coming back into fashion in some ways. I like this trend because I think it will be really exciting to edit and take images in this style. I will focus on hair and makeup for these shoots as well as the styling of the clothes.

Chapter 1.

As I pull my hair back in quite possibly the fiftieth bun, a bun by which I’m trying to convey that I did try, but at the same time that I didn’t try too much, but inevitably fail for the, quite possibly fiftieth time

 I groan in defeated exasperation raising my hands to the unforgiving high heavens and damn it all to hell, just letting my arms slump and my hair fall back in its usual, otherwise perfectly passable, waves, I decide that this is probably the end of me as a potential romantic social being because at this point it seems that my whole self esteem is, irrationally, loosely hanging by the very thin thread of my very poor skill of fashioning a complementary hairdo to my outfit, a skill that I, naturally, expected myself to acquire by precisely fifteen minutes of watching instructional videos of how to accomplish such a task, and ten minutes of attempting to recreate it myself. Surely, I should have known that an amateur thirty something year old with virtually no experience in hair styling other than the casual, day-to-day hairdo, could match that of a teenager who essentially does it for a job. Surely.

Or... maybe if I do let my hair rest on my shoulders as it usually does, however now more orderly that in it generally is, thanks to the application of several products that I didn’t really know I needed, but now that I have been acquainted with, decide I maybe will actually use in the future I might actually have succeeded in doing the very thing that I believed I had been failing at all along. As I look in the mirror, perspective anew, I thank the lord for both sixteen year olds on the internet and self suggestion, both very powerful tools in the life of a woman.

All in all, I’m pretty pleased with the result. Hair may have proven, along the three decades of my inhabiting this earth to be one thing that, try as I might, I could never really master, but makeup and dressing up are things that, if I may say so myself, I’m pretty damn good at. Trial and error, of course, has proven to be the mother of all teachers and, with god as my witness, there was quite the number of errors in my trials. However, as I’m shamelessly admiring my full length reflection I’m happy to conclude that this may be the culmination of my learning experience and what a perfect opportunity of that to happen, this date that I have been hoping for but never really letting myself to expect for most of my adult life.

There is, indeed, a life out of the friend zone. Or at least for those of us who are lucky enough to have the object of our desires return our sentiments, there is. As it turns out, I am one of those happy ones and I would rather not consider the alternative. It is much to dreadful to ponder upon right now, and I believe I’ve done more than my fair share of thinking about it so far. Tonight is a celebration of my triumph. As the train of thought is all but a hair’s width away from crashing into the sometimes thicker than I’d like it to be bone of my skull, I try to distract myself by admiring my outfit once more, but, however nice it is, the second time around it doesn’t really work anymore. Trepidation is a very strong detractor from reality, and in reality, it’s just going to be me and him. Alone. On a date. There are so many ways this can become very fucked up in various ways but, thankfully enough, before I can make a mental inventory of each and all of them, possibly in alphabetical order, and drive myself various degrees of insane in a very short time span, the alarm I set for leaving home and picking him up at the airport goes off and I bolt out the door.

The car drive and subsequent wait at the airport go by in a flurry of faces and roads and the trees by those roads, and bad music on the radio, and there, emerging from this mix of mismatched elements is his face. I see him looking around the crowd, eyes searching, with his brows furrowed as they do when he’s focused on something, and I wait patiently for him to locate me. His expression changes visibly when he does, softening a bit and I’m frozen into place with anxiety. Serves me right to feel like this after having dumped all of my emotional baggage on him right before he had to leave. As he strides towards me, I have the sudden urge to make a run for home and just spend the day watching TV reruns and eating junk food instead of torturing myself like this. But here he is, and here I am, and here we are, silently sharing an awkward hug in Heathrow, silently walking towards my car outside of Heathrow, silently driving the very same car away from Heathrow...

He clears his voice and hesitates before speaking.

“So... How’ve you been?”

My god, this really doesn’t feel right.

“Good. You?”

He is no longer turned to face me, but looking straight ahead at the road before us. His reply is absent minded, completely devoid of any inflection.

“Fair.”

“How’s your Da?”

This time a smile breaks through his poker face. Finally, something familiar.

“Getting younger every day. A lad in his prime, I’d say.”

“I bet!”

“He asked about you, you know?”

“Yeah?”

It isn’t really like I wouldn’t or didn’t expect that. I’ve known the man for most of my life, I’ve been to his house in Edinburgh more times than I can count on two hands, I send him homemade pie on Christmas. Of course he would ask about me, but I humour the conversation because, well, because it’s the first time since we’ve seen each other when we’re a bit more relaxed, so I let myself slip into the customer talk of how his father is, his eternal joie de vivre, the weather in Scotland, and others, feeling the air in the car become a bit lighter as we converse. Before long, I’m parked in the lot beside his house and the trepidation is slowly settling back in, evident to both of us.

“I’ll, uh, just drop my bag really quickly and be right back in? Or would you like to come up?”

I shake my head. He nods and exits the car.

There’s no way I can go back there, not with how I’m feeling, how we’re both feeling, right now, not with what happened the last time I was there, crying and professing my love, the love that had been corroding at my peace for years, unbeknownst to him, essentially dropping its decade weight on him out of nowhere. Fortunately, my love was mirrored by his, I found out the very same day, but that doesn’t really change much about the current situation. Our paradigm was shaken to the core, our mannerisms, before then fuelled by platonic pretense, however romantic our intentions might have subconsciously been, became deconstructed, crumbled before us. We have to re-learn friendship, to integrate love into the equation, to function as a couple. Moreover, there is the aspect of physicality to be considered. That fateful day brought with itself not only theoretical revelations, as it did carnal ones. For the first time in thirty something years, we knew each other as man and woman, fully wholly, biblically. It was a hunger that I did not even know I needed satiated to that extent, which is why I’d maybe disregarded it almost completely up to that point - also an instance of how such a powerful tool as self suggestion might come into play in one’s life, I reckon – but now that had a bite of the proverbial apple, I wanted more. Alas, what mess we’ve got ourselves into!

I startle as the car door opens and raise my forehead from the wheel. He is looking at me, not saying anything, and, breathing in, I do the same, feeling like I’m finally seeing him for the first time since I picked him up. This is Tom, my best friend since childhood. Tom, my partner through good and bad, high and low, the boy who thought me how to do a slingshot, who held my hair the first time I was hungover, who I, not only once, sent out on tampon runs at the most inconvenient times of the day. Tom, who smells like my childhood and maturity all in one. Tom, my best friend, my lover, my confidante, my Tom.

“I missed you.”

He smiles, a genuine, blossoming smile that reaches his eyes and it’s all back to normal for a brief second. Then his face comes closer to mine, so close that we’re breathing each other’s air and my heart flutters again. But this time it’s excitement. It’s new and it’s scary and I want to run away and jump in his arms at the same time and-

“I missed you, too,” he whispers against my lips and then kisses me. He kisses me for I don’t really know how long, and nor do I care, and it’s different familiarity than what I knew, but I know him and for the time being that’s all that matters.

ATM Belts Must Be Conscient When Installing

In order to allow the life span of ATM Belts last longer In addition to the choice of top-quality flat belts, we should also ensure proper placement of the belt, as well as the everyday operation of maintenance and maintenance tasks What should be taken into consideration when installing a seamless flat belt?

1. Take off from the roll of tape, place it on the flexible rotating shaft, on top of the iron core and then put the frame of the belt roll properly. Make sure that the top and lower lids don't move in opposite directions prior to when you place them in the rack.

After the belt has been completely covered, adjust the gap between both wheels back to ensure the correct place and make sure the belt is adjusted to a moderate amount of looseness.

5. The belt should be installed correctly in the groove of the wheel. Typically the outside edge of the belt will be the same as the wheel's rim. The axes of both wheels remain parallel to each other and the symmetrical planes get re-fitted.

6. If it's a flat belt set It should replace them in groups as it gets damaged. Don't mix old and new belts.

Striatus Masonry Footbridge

Striatus is an arched masonry footbridge composed of 3D-printed concrete blocks assembled without mortar or reinforcement. The 16 x 12 metre footbridge is the first of its kind, combining traditional techniques of master builders with advanced computational design, engineering and robotic manufacturing technologies.

Exhibited at the Giardini della Marinaressa during the Venice Architecture Biennale until November 2021, Striatus has been developed by the Block Research Group (BRG) at ETH Zurich and Zaha Hadid Architects Computation and Design Group (ZHACODE), in collaboration with incremental3D (in3D) and made possible by Holcim.

Proposing a new language for concrete that is structurally informed, fabrication aware, ecologically responsible and precisely placed to build more with less, Striatus optimises the properties of masonry structures, 3D concrete printing (3DCP) and contemporary design; presenting an alternative to traditional concrete construction.

The name “Striatus” reflects its structural logic and fabrication process. Concrete is precisely printed in layers orthogonal to the main structural forces to create a “striated” compression-only structure that requires no mortar or reinforcement.

As the construction does not need mortar, the blocks can be dismantled, and the bridge reassembled at different location. If the construction is no longer needed, the materials can simply be separated and recycled.

Strength through geometry Striatus is an unreinforced concrete structure that achieves strength through geometry. Concrete can be considered an artificial stone that performs best in compression. In arched and vaulted structures, material can be placed precisely so that forces can travel to the supports in pure compression. Strength is created through geometry, rather than an inefficient accumulation of materials as in conventional concrete beams and flat floor slabs. This presents opportunities to significantly reduce the amount of material needed to span space as well as the possibility to build with lower-strength, less-polluting alternatives.

Striatus’ bifurcating deck geometry responds to its site conditions. The funicular shape of its structural arches has been defined by limit analysis techniques and equilibrium methods, such as thrust network analysis, originally developed for the structural assessment of historic masonry vaults; its crescent profile encompasses the thrust lines that trace compressive forces through the structure for all loading cases.

Steel tension ties absorb the horizontal thrust of the arches. Neoprene pads placed in between the dry-assembled blocks avoid stress concentrations and control the friction properties of the interfaces, echoing the use of lead sheets or soft mortar in historical masonry construction.

In plan, the boundaries of the structure form deep arches that transfer horizontal loads (for example, from visitors leaning against the balustrades) to the supports in pure compression. Advanced discrete element modelling (DEM) was used to refine and optimise the blocks’ stereotomy and to check stability of the entire assembly under extreme loading cases or differential settlements of the supports.

The bridge’s 53 3DCP voussoirs have been produced using non-parallel print layers that are orthogonal to the dominant flow of forces. This avoids delamination between the print layers as they are held together in compression. The additive manufacturing process ensures the structural depth of the components can be achieved without producing blocks with a solid section, hence reducing the amount of material needed compared to subtractive fabrication methods or casting.

Striatus follows masonry structural logic on two levels. As a whole, the bridge behaves as a series of leaning unreinforced voussoir arches, with discretisations orthogonal to the dominant flow of compressive forces, following the same structural principles as arched Roman bridges in stone. Locally, on the level of the voussoir, the 3DCP layers behave as traditional brick masonry evident in the inclined rows of bricks within Nubian or Mexican vaulting.

Circular by design Circular by design, Striatus places material only where needed, significantly reducing its environmental footprint. Built without reinforcement and using dry assembly without binders, Striatus can be installed, dismantled, reassembled and repurposed repeatedly; demonstrating how the three R’s of sustainability (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) can be applied to concrete structures.

Reduce: – Lowering embodied emissions through structural geometry and additive manufacturing that minimises the consumption of resources and eliminates construction waste. – Placing concrete only there where needed, 3DCP minimises the amount of material required, while the low-stress, compression-only funicular geometry of Striatus proposes the further development of 3DCP that will enable the use of much lower-strength, less-polluting printable materials. – Compared to embedded reinforcement in concrete, Striatus uses external ties to absorb the thrust of its arched shape and dramatically reduce the amount of steel required. A high carbon-intense material, steel reinforcement (100% recycled) per unit mass is more than ten times that of a standard concrete.

Reuse: – Improving circularity and longevity. Unlike conventional reinforced concrete structures, Striatus is designed to be dry assembled without any binder or glue, enabling the bridge to be dismantled and reused in other locations. Its funicular design ensures the 3DCP blocks experience low stresses throughout their use, resulting in no loss of structural integrity. Striatus separates components in compression and tension, ensuring external ties can be easily accessed and maintained, resulting in a longer lifespan for the entire structure.

Recycle: – By ensuring different materials are separated and separable, each component of Striatus can easily be recycled with minimal energy and cost. 3D printing also avoids the waste and costs associated with single-use moulds. Additionally, the component materials within Striatus remain separate and separable with the use of mechanical connections such as simple dry contacts between the voussoirs rather than chemical glues or binders, ensuring a simple, low-energy recycling process at the end of the elements’ life, potentially after multiple cycles of reuse.

Robotic 3D concrete printing Unlike typical extrusion 3D printing in simple horizontal layers, Striatus uses a two-component (2K) concrete ink with corresponding printing head and pumping arrangement to precisely print non-uniform and non-parallel layers via a 6-axis, multi-DOF robotic arm. This new generation of 3D concrete printing in combination with the arched masonry design allows the resulting components to be used structurally without any reinforcement or post-tensioning.

To prevent misalignment between the direction of structural forces and the orientation of material layers that arises from typical shape-agnostic slicing of explicitly modelled geometry, a custom-developed design pipeline was formulated for Striatus to ensure that its printed layers are wholly aligned with the direction of compression forces throughout the entire bridge and also locally through each 3D-printed block. To address issues and challenges that could prevent in-between stability during printing, the coherence and feasibility of the gradually evolving print paths have been modelled using a Functional Representation (FRep) process.

This process encodes and continuously checks rules of minimum overlap, maximum cantilever between print layers and print length, print speed and the volume of wet concrete extruded. These measures, typically used in horizontally layered 3DCP, have been advanced and refined to work on an inclined-plane setting:

– The angular differences between start and end planes of all 53 printed blocks have been simultaneously adjusted to meet multiple criteria such as an appropriate structural contact and angle between adjacent blocks, and maximum print inclination. – The careful design and iterative refinement of the hollow cross sections and infill triangulation have ensured that material is placed corresponding to the precisely analysed, local structural performance of each block. This design and optimisation has been applied to each individual layer of every block (with 500 print layers on average per block), ensuring that all blocks are as hollow and light as possible, and consequently use the least amount of material possible, while maintaining structural integrity under all loading conditions. – The resulting intricate cross-sectional design has been processed into a single, continuous print path meeting various criteria that include appropriate print speed and turning radii, structurally required material width and thickness, and controlled expression of naturally occurring printing artefacts.

A nuanced aspect of robotic 3DCP masonry is the re-introduction of intelligence and highly skilled labour into the manufacturing and construction industry. The digitisation of fabrication and digital augmentation of skilled assembly and construction techniques makes historically-accrued knowledge accessible to younger generations and enables its systematic upgrade towards industrialised construction through the use of computational and robotic technologies. Created with the same structural principles and a similar fully-integrated computational design-to-fabrication approach that form the basis of the vaulted, rib-stiffened, unreinforced concrete floors being developed by the Block Research Group in partnership with Holcim, Striatus proposes an alternative to the standard inefficient floor slabs within any building.

Compared to typical reinforced-concrete flat floor slabs, this new floor system uses only 30% of the volume of concrete and just 10% of the amount of steel. The very low stresses within the funicular structure also enable the use of low-embodied-carbon concrete that incorporates high percentages of recycled construction waste. Prefabricated and dry-assembled, and therefore fully demountable and reusable, this floor system is easily and cleanly recyclable at end-of-life.

But for the 3rd Mansion Artists Residency, in the beginning there was the house, a portion of which was rented by a restaurant. Later, the entire building was taken over by eateries one after the other till, due to constraints added by Covid-19, the premises were abandoned. At this venue, the Mansion residency, organised by Nausheen Saeed, was held from 15thto 30th January. It included six artists of different practices and experiences. During a period of social distancing and fear of other humans, this endeavour not only connected individual artists, but also brought viewers to a meaningful, non-commercial art activity. An artists’ residency, by its very chemistry, is about exchange of ideas, sharing facilities and exploring new options. In South Asia, art organisations such as Khoj, Vasl, Britto, and Theertha facilitated links between artists of a country and the region. Some leading names of contemporary art from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka discovered their voices while away from their studios and normal pursuits. However, the year 2021 (like 2001 in that both altered the entire planet) posed a challenge to the notion of ‘normal’. The ‘normal’ became a threat. In a way, all participating artists and Saeed, the curator of Mansion Residency, defied this fear. While keeping safety measures, they revealed the unlimited frontiers of possibilities. One cannot expect artists to venture out for something revolutionary or shocking in the brief span of two weeks because art has to be slow-acting to be effective and lasting. The work produced at the residency offered diverse responses to our environment: physical, collective, natural, virtual and emotional. To start with, the space seemed a perpetual stimulus, especially its run-down state, for creative individuals who prefer dimness to brightness, misery to happiness, dust to cleanliness and brokenness to functionality. This reading may be a cliché, but ask any artist, and he/she would feel more comfortable with peeling plaster, dilapidated structures, uneven wall paint and withering woodwork as a subject, because it all comes across interesting compared to a boring state-of-the-art freshly furnished construction. The location in Lahore was a point of departure that inspired artists to respond to it. The scale of its interior impressed Suleman Khilji who established his studio in the bare walls and large glass window. This was an ideal place due to its dimensions, informality and atmosphere that he could have never had. Khilji rendered drawings – almost ghost images – of staff living there so that the work was a testimony to their presence. To many the staff may even not have been people with names and specific personalities but merely cooks, electricians, cleaners and guards. The building had once flourished as a high-end restaurant. Khilji made an effort in his work to return ‘the arty area’ to these characters. The past of the place, a food joint, its dysfunctional kitchen and deserted dining rooms, played a significant part in some of the works that emerged during the residency. For instance, Kiran Saleem, who has been appropriating art of the past, addressing the issue of environment, and intervening into familiar settings, responded to the property by placing a section of Edouard Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergere, behind a screen of wooden blinds to create her Bar Behind the Bars. The Parisian bar, from the impressionist’s painting, was translated/transported into another ‘bar’ made of wooden lengths. Fixed behind these stripes, the print of the painting was lit whenever a visitor stepped into that section, alluding to all kinds of bars – prohibitions and pleasures. The location in Lahore was a point of departure that inspired artists to respond to it. The scale of its interior impressed Suleman Khilji, who established his make-shift studio in the bare walls with a large glass window. Her other installation, 45 plastic bags containing fish and water, was suspended like a chandelier from the ceiling. Saleem recognised the luminosity of water through transparent bags and the glistening scales of the fish and turned them into an item of fancy lighting. The tale, about the narrator’s encounter with an Iranian woman having a strange name, had a surrealistic overtone, making the entire episode suspect. But who cares, if the artist had actually met the Iranian in a train or the anecdote was a fabrication, because as the end was without a conclusion, its actual origin can also be contested. Facts always change. Umberto Eco observes that the scientific and historic truths we believe in, such as “the laws of universal gravitations are those established by Newton, or…. Napoléon died on Saint Helena on 5 May 1821” may alter in future with some new discovery/research, but incidents like “Little Red Riding-Hood is eaten by the wolf and then freed by the woodcutters” or “Anna Karenina commits suicides” will remain true for eternity. Stories are more stable and reliable than theories. Rabbya Naseer aimed at re-living the custom of strangers meeting at ordinary cafes and sharing their (life) stories. For a number of other participants, words became a significant tool. In her sound piece, Madyha Leghari employed text to make us realise the brittleness of language. A stuttering woman pronounces her profession: contemporary artist. In her state of confusion and nervousness, she utters several variants of the words. This can be as valid as multiple mis-concepts of contemporary artist. In another installation, the sentence, “This message has no body text,” was split into other words and options – all auto-generated lines that we get from our gadgets. Our senses are tuned to reacting to these mechanised sounds which have replaced human voice/presence. Like “This message is 10 percent real, 90 percent auto-generated/10 percent intended, 90 percent fated”. The sound came from two sides of the room and you heard it while sitting in the middle, almost like attending a sermon on “post-truth”. Truth is a problem for everyone, more so for artists like Mariam Waheed who sought to find out “Who I am” and some related questions in her text pieces that – like a mirror – reciprocated the dialogue of self-discovery. The identity, function and importance of an artist, have been concerns common among artists since the day artists were liberated from conventional patronage only to end up as a commodity in modern times where you don’t hang a canvas by Andy Warhol, but a ‘Warhol’. Since then Apple has released the iPhone XS and XR variants, the iPhone 11 line up and the 2nd Generation iPhone SE. The iPhone 12, coupled with 5G support, seems poised for stronger than usual uptake. For this analysis, we review the underlying drivers of iPhone device replacement including the relationship between consumer affluence and device age to understand how the upcoming iPhone 12 is positioned for this holiday season.

Device Obsolescence

A primary factor that drives new iPhone upgrades is device obsolescence. Apple doesn’t seem to explicitly plan this, but rapid innovation around both their hardware and operating systems results in reduced performance across older devices. Working against the growth of Apple’s annual iPhone unit sales is the fact that consumers are holding on to older devices longer. Today, consumers upgrade iPhones about every four years, compared to every three years back in 2018. For the iPhone 12 launch, those using the iPhone 7, launched in September 2016, or older models are candidates to upgrade their devices this cycle. We offer analysis on this below.

A Bigger Step

It’s speculated that Apple’s iPhone 12 will feature greater improvements than typical releases, which will likely increase device uptake. From a design standpoint, it likely re-introduces a smaller screen version as well as a metal, sharper-edged frame not seen since the iPhone 4. The 5G Factor

Interest for the iPhone 12 appears greater due to the expectations that the device will be 5G-enabled, promising consumers access to seamless connectivity, faster speeds and next-generation user experiences. That said, tests have shown that 5G speeds are not pervasively available and sometimes actually slower than 4G speeds. The perception of a step-change in wireless technology could lead to a higher rate of iPhone upgrades this year, especially due to the pent-up demand created by Apple initially waiting to support 5G until this generation of iPhone. However, 5G may still be more of a future promise.

Affluence & Age of Device Base

Among the greatest factors in determining how well iPhone 12 may get adopted is simply whether consumers can afford them and what iPhone models they currently own. To better understand these factors, Flurry conducted some analysis, which we present below. Flurry Analytics, owned by Verizon Media, is used in over 1 million mobile applications worldwide, providing insights into more than 2 billion smartphones around the world. The farther to the right, the higher the percent of devices that are iPhone 8 or later models. On the y-axis we show the consumer spending power in a country, using household expenditure per capita. The higher up the chart, the more money is spent per household. The color of the dot relates to the size of a market, based on the monthly active iPhone devices Flurry detects in that market.

Let’s take a look at a couple of examples to get oriented. Represented by a dark green dot, the U.S. is among the largest markets with the highest consumer spending power and has a high proportion of newer iPhone models in use. This means that people in the U.S. can afford new devices and also upgrade much more frequently than in other markets. By contrast, Vietnam, in the lower left of the chart, has below average spending power and a larger proportion of older devices in its install base. Because the population cannot likely afford to upgrade devices more frequently, they hold on to iPhone 7 and older devices for much longer.

From our calculations, 63% of iPhones in use around the world are less than four years old (iPhone 8 or later models). For reference, we overlaid that average on the chart with a dashed gray vertical line. Countries to the right of the line replace their devices more frequently and overall have much newer phones. Those to the left of the line replace less frequently and have older devices, on average.

Statistically, we found a +0.8 correlation between spending power (household expenditure per capita) and the share of newer devices (a higher percent of iPhone 8 or later models). That is a very strong positive association, which means that the more spending power in a market, the newer the phones. This makes sense since a new iPhone requires a substantial investment and it explains why the United States and Hong Kong, both with a high household expenditure per capita, also have relatively low percentage of older iPhones in their respective markets.

Most of Apple’s smaller markets, represented by light red or gray dots, have low consumer spending power and a lower device replacement rate. This primarily includes most of Africa, as well as parts of Asia and Latin America. Consumers in these countries keep their iPhones for a longer period, likely due to having lower disposable income.

Some bigger iPhones markets such as Brazil, Russia, India and Indonesia have relatively low consumer spending power combined with a low device refresh rate. This means that a less expensive base version of the iPhone 12 can have a disproportionate impact on these key markets to get people to upgrade their iPhones sooner. This aligns with a previous report that Apple’s low-cost iPhones have helped Apple strengthen its footing in many international markets.

Using our calculation that 37% of global iPhones are four or more years old, and that there are an estimated 950 million active iPhones in the market, we estimate that 350 million iPhones are ripe for upgrade based on their age. This gives Apple a sizable addressable market with its iPhone 12 line. From various leaks, including from technology analyst Jon Prosser, Apple’s lowest priced model is speculated to start at $549 (with a rumored iPhone 12 4G). If this is the case, then Apple appears well positioned to drive upgrades from the older part of their install base. At the same time, with the highest end model speculated to retail for $1399 (iPhone 12 Pro Max), they would also cover off early adopters and loyalists in more affluent markets that want the latest and greatest Apple has to offer. By all accounts we predict a stronger than typical uptake of the iPhone 12 line compared to previous year’s launches.
