cnetizens post souvenir they got at various chinese museums
these are all fridge stickers
#china#art#crafts#museums#souvenir#also#British Museum#just return artifacts from other cultures to their countries#I don't know how many times it's been said#I remember that they did not know how to preserve a very precious Chinese painting (looted and traded by illegal means during the war)#but actually cut the painting into four pieces#as a result of which the paper of the painting began to deteriorate#and they had to go to China to ask for help#and China sent an expert in cultural relics preservation to restore the painting#and they still refused to give back these works of art at this point#smh

I think haunted museums are an underutilized concept
you take so many personal objects from peoples final resting places, at least SOME of that shit is gonna be haunted or cursed.
Night at the museum is the closest we as a society have come to a museum horror story and that’s a damn shame
#Give me a horror story in a museum#give me a theme abt the real horror being the way museums steal sacred or personal objects from their cultures#Give me a museum that knows it’s artifacts are malicious and killing security guards but they’d rather die than give up their status#I was gonna say movie but honestly make it an indie horror game#Fnaf doesn’t get a monopoly on security guard protagonists#Also cuz it’s be cool to run around a museum after dark#Recreate the entire British museum in blender and then make it spooky#I’m imagining a sort of walk around experience where you can read the plaques for different exhibits#And the plaques get more fucked up over the course of the night#Talking about how many people died to get it here or how a persons spirit is screaming for this to be returned#Idk what the gameplay would be maybe something a bit amnesia-esque#No weapon more of a run around and hide#Collecting key cards or codes you need to get to different areas and escape#I’ve never actually wanted to to make a video game but now I’m tempted nooooo#Ugh that’s be so much work#And yet#I’m thinking about all the statues with missing hands and heads and noses#Body horror potential#Museums are so big and twisty they’d be amazing

i have never understood minimalism and i never will. i put even more stuff on my wall today and on my shelves and on my desk and it fills me with JOY every time i look at it. you can barely see the white poking through anymore. it looks lived in, it looks loved. it's glorious.

Trying to keep my history thoughts on the matter to myself online so that I don't get turbo cancelled but I just have to point out that there is a huge difference between THE British Museum and A British museum.
For Christ's sake.
#like that's just factually incorrect#THE British Museum made no such proclamation#one small museum in hertfordshire did#also all sources about this person were written by enemies#and should not be regarded as an unbiased account of firsthand statements#it's just...... such an ahistorical sloppy decision#like there is so much queer history#so much well-documented evidence of queer history from all over the world#and you pick this#and attach an uncontemporaneous modern-lens category to it based on political slander#i suppose it did its job though by generating press for the museum

Guess why I woke up with the Secret World Legends barbershop music stuck in my head!
[Image ID: Comparing Devinder with a SWL player character, there are some differences in 3d style and color, like his scarf being red instead of orange. But the PC overall has a similar scarf, shirt, hairstyle, and physical appearance. His hair is parted in the opposite direction to the screenshot above, though it matches the direction from his promotional trailer, which is not pictured here.
/End ID]
#swl#secret world legends#tsw#the secret world#the music is still looping in my brain#this feels too small and silly to properly tag Redfall#also that'll be his Egypt outfit#he'll start with his fancy yellow jacket for Solomon Island#then I have to pick one from a thousand different ways to do his dapper outfit for Transylvania#maybe repeat dapper in a different way for Kaidan#...then figure out how he'd dress to infiltrate a cult. again.#I forgot SWL only has 8 character slots (and I've already used all mine) but LUCKILY#I had a bay-bee Dragon alt that I hadn't done much with#I know Dev's British as hell but I hate the Templar#and I've played SO many Lumies#plus Dragon might let him keep streaming AND he gets to hang out with more crytpid(-adjacent) folks#I've also waffled all this time over which character to focus on the Museum with (because most are just necromancer-adjacent oops)#and this massively nerdy cryptozoologist is fucking IT

our teacher doing a lecture on our ancient pottery/statue making techniques and analysing the scenes they depict: so this one "appeared" in the Louvre, this one "mysteriously showed" up in Berlin, this one "found its way" to the British museum...
me and my friends in the back planning multiple rescue raids:
#I know a lot of people know and talk about the british museum and all the stolen shit it has#but I don't think enough people talk about other equally illegally acquired artefacts in other museums#aphrodite of melos is in the louvre in paris and we have a copy of it#our people had to be 'given permission' to take measurements to make a copy#of our own fucking statue#fuck the british museum but also fuck the louvre as well and all other museums that have stolen stuff from people around the world#greek stuff

So at the end of Classics class today we watched a few minutes of the OG black and white The Mummy film because we had time and part of our reading for the upcoming weekend is an ancient text that it was inspired by (idk what, I haven’t looked at the reading list yet but I’m sure I’ll have something to say about it later don’t worry) and the experience consisted mostly of me and the rest of the handful of upperclassmen from the history and classics departments that signed up for the course (and one auditor in his 70s who’s just there for fun) absolutely shrieking at the screen because this moron was putting his bare, unwashed hands on a very ancient stone tablet and his skin juices might damage the artifact. And also there was a mummy or whatever, but mostly the tablet.
#and worst of all#they were from the British Museum#we also made fun of him for reading the ancient curse out loud like an idiot#but I’m pretty sure that’s just part of the standard mummy-watching experience#local queer classicist posts#classics stuff#classical studies#archaeology#the mummy

indiana jones but he steals artefacts from museums and returns them to their countries of origin
#just imagine a variety of museums watching their collections diminish and knowing full well this motherfucker is stealing shit#right from under their noses#but they can't fucking prove it#so they just. suffer.#meanwhile indiana is over here teaching all of his archaeology students abt the shittiness of museums as colonial institutions#and smiling his way through meetings with the curators abt HOW DO WE STOP THE BIG BAD THIEF MAN#like “well you could just return the stuff and then the thief can't get them and also it's good PR for you”#“coz this totally hypothetical guy is– I mean seems to be enjoying him– I mean themself fucking with– I mean stealing from you”#“but like if you don't want to do that you could. install more security cameras ig?”#“you could hire these security guys! they're great at what they do!”#*cut forward to the 'security team' and indi smuggling an entire gallery's artefacts out of the museum overnight*#“oh wow I can't believe they got past my amazing security buddies :( real shame for you guys :( ”#ok so maybe i have an assignment that's making me extra mad at the british museum#and also want @bodhrancomedy to give me indi's deaf queer disabled sidekick in a museum heist#bodhran pls

these are the caryatids at the erechtheion, an ancient greek temple part of the athens acropolis. they’re recreations so that the originals don’t get destroyed, which is fine. they are meant to be sisters.
this! is a picture of 5 out of 6 of them, in the acropolis museum in athens. they are set up like that, with the gap in the middle, to emphasize their missing sister.
this! is their last sister. in the british museum.
#anyway the british museum can go FUCK itself#the gov of athens have been asking for this back for a fucking while now and they just won’t! give! it! back!#and there’s so many other artworks too! especially from africa!#and i’m planning on getting a book about the benin plaques specifically so i’ll probably make a post about those then but!!#it just makes me so fucking sad like that’s their sister!#i know they’re inanimate objects but if i lost my siblings i don’t know what’d i’d fucking do#so it’s just really fucking angering to me and also makes me very sad#anyway fuck the british museums give the art back! please!#my post#art history#art#british museum

Sources for Somerton's Plagiarism from Hbomberguy's Video (as much as I could get)
I went back through Harry's video, focused entirely on the sources James Somerton pulled from in the hopes of creating as much of a comprehensive list as I could--though my Google-Fu is not very strong. I did however find something I thought was forever lost and that made me very happy--specifically the magazine Midlands Zone containing the column by Steven Spinks that Harry poignantly used as an illustration of gay erasure... while Somerton uses it to sound like HE is waxing remorseful about the very subject.
This is not a complete list, I'm sure. For one thing, I was only able to attempt to pull sources that Harry himself mentioned in the video. Surely there's so very much more out there. I expect there to be a great deal more internet archeology to unearth just how much writing and culture Somerton has stolen like he's the British Museum of Natural History but for gay people.
- - - - -
Harry's list of mentioned youtubers:
Alexander Avila - https://www.youtube.com/@alexander_avila Matt Baume - https://www.youtube.com/@MattBaume Khadija Mbowe - https://www.youtube.com/@KhadijaMbowe Lady Emily - https://www.youtube.com/@LadyEmilyPresents Shanspeare - https://www.youtube.com/@Shanspeare RickiHirsch - https://www.youtube.com/@RickiHirsch VerilyBitchie - https://www.youtube.com/@verilybitchie
Harry created a convenient playlist of videos by these and other people he wants to bring to everyone's attention.
Please give them your support.

Midlands Zone Magazine - Column by Steven Spinks
After a great deal of searching, I found an archive of the "Midlands Zone" magazine, where you can read through past issues dating all the way back to February 2014. I have also found the issue from which Somerton took Spinks' poignant discussion of gay erasure: Overall archive Specific Issue - Pages 16-17
It will not allow you to download it, but you can read it exactly as it appeared in print form.

Telos announced and cancelled a film likely based on this book: The Final Girl Support Group - By Grady Hendrix

I refrained from including certain sources.
First off only focusing on Somerton's work.
Secondly not including anything that might be visible enough to not require amplifying their voice (I cannot speak for all of those I have found links to, but journalism is frequently a thankless job).
Thirdly any source that is of a nature that is antithetical to the very existence of the queer community, such as the right-leaning source that didn't make it into Somerton's video, but Harry was able to identify as a source he had considered using.
If you feel I have missed a mentioned source--or you know of a source from material that was not covered in Harry's video--please do not hesitate to reblog with added details.

Please share this information far and wide, and please add to it if you find more material that can be positively identified and linked to the creator/writer.
