🥤 ⇢ recommend an author or fanfic you love

You didn’t specify a fandom. 😂 I’ve been reading fanfic for 15+ years now. Some authors I do not read any more, however Sara’s Girl is an author I will always read, even though I do not consider myself part of the fandom anymore. Her weekly fanfics got me through some rough times and her weekly updates were what I would hang onto sometimes (and she knows all this – she’s someone from my FFnet/ LJ days and I made and sent a wedding present). And just typing that is clear evidence of why I feel like fandom has shifted, because I don’t feel that same sense of community anymore. It’s more about content creation and consumption than the community.

For TG the author whose fics I am slowly working my way through reading are @film-in-my-soul and it's always a treat to curl up and read their fics. (There are also 100+ fics and I'm about 80% of the way through).

I am a chronic re-reader. Also a commenter who tries to leave long comments, which means I prefer to not read on my phone as typing comments becomes more difficult. So I will often re-read fics on my phone.

I don’t post personal stuff this blog because I chuck all the stuff over on main, where I am pretty much an open book. 😂 People with ten minutes and the motivation can find where I work.

I guess that fact that I came out as bisexual when I was 16 (mid 1990s) and my parents were both very laid-back about the whole thing. Despite being with my husband for 24 years I have had more female sexual partners than male. I told my best friend I loved her, and she had to reject me (we’re still best friends and were each other’s head bridesmaids at our respective weddings).

Apart from the fact that they all need therapy?

For Hangster, the headcanon is that they allow themselves to be soft with each other. It takes them years to get there, and these softer sides are never exposed to others, but they slowly get there. (And yes, this is exactly where OAA is going).

Everyone in my family is currently well and healthy.

I’m in a job where I am valued and I enjoy coming to every day.

I am very content and settled and am in a good place most days.

🦷 ⇢ share some personal wisdom or a life hack you swear on

My mum, who has been dead nearly 17 years, was a LifeLine counsellor. She gave me a mug when I was 13-14 and it said:

"Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday"

I basically take from that to mean "don't be borrowing worry/trouble", and she also taught me to direct my worry towards action and things I COULD change.

I have many life hacks that work for me personally, however that's just me. My lists and dice rolling and getting people to tell me what fics I should write - it's all about making myself accountable to other people. That would backfire horribly for many others.

❄️ ⇢ what's your dream theme/plot for a fic, and who would write it best?

If I dream up a fic plot, it usually eats away at me until I write it myself. As in, I cannot settle mentally until it is out there on a screen or piece of paper. I've been writing fic for over 30+ years and as creative outlets go it's one of my favourites. Involves less swearing than patchwork quilting at least.

My dad's is getting on in age and I am facing the very real reality that he will likely be gone in the next five years. I haven't needed my parents in decades, but neither am I ready to be parentless either. It always makes me sad knowing that my own children will never know my mother.

Not when there is no guarantee of any future right now, the bird strike and g-Loc incidents both really driving home how dangerous their jobs are.

(Jokes on you because I have 15+ WIPs and it’s anyone’s guess which one that’s from…😂)

Regarding the whole CQL-only fans "vs” the novel fans thing and other MXTX stuff - I have been receiving asks about it since way back but I’ve put it behind my pending bc I didn’t get where it was coming from. However, having to deal with it personally is quite an experience, I guess. This is more of a general thing for the fandom as I’ve observed. Everything I’m going to say here is my PERSONAL OPINION so you’re all free to agree and disagree but I really won’t tolerate online bullying by anyone to anyone.

I personally liked CQL bc they were on point with majority of the casting, production was good (props, costumes, OST, etc), and gave more spotlight to side characters (especially JYL). Of course, there are some aspects I’m not that fond of it either like the acting per se (and that’s bc 1) i was spoiled by zhu yilong and bai yu’s acting in zhenhun; and 2) i understand that they were mostly rookie actors) and some changes in the plot. But this has always been what it’s like to content we consume - we like some things and we don’t like some things. That’s more than fine. We all each have our own takes and aesthetics so of course, we’re going to have differing views. And this goes the same to the novel as well as the other adaptations (donghua, manhua, audio drama). We’re going to find things and people we like and don’t like - that’s normal, that’s fine, that’s more than okay.

You know what’s not okay? It’s when we start on a hate crusade. 

1. “tg for censorship and no [insert whatever] happened on the drama” - Imagine being so privileged and unemphatic to the plight of people living in a place where censorship is legitimately an issue, where they could get jailed, where they don’t have as much freedom on this kind of topics. NEWSFLASH: The REAL PEOPLE who worked on MDZS (the author, the producers, the actors, etc) have more weight on importance than those FICTIONAL CHARACTERS we like. Ground yourself to reality once in a while.

2. “the novel is gross esp since it’s written by a cis fujoshi” - I’m sorry, I wasn’t aware anyone knew how MXTX defined herself? Are you her close friend that knows intimate things about her like her sexuality and how her mind worked? I personally don’t agree with some of her takes like finding it “odd” to have more than 1 gay couple but considering her environment - y’all really think it’s that easy to spot LGBT+ people out in the open? It’s okay if we don’t agree but we also have to try and see through their lens because what’s normal for us may not be normal in other places. I’m not even going to open the can of worms regarding the term “fujoshi” - it’s the digital age, it’s so easy to research the story and history of it and the fandom in general.

3. “i hate [insert whatever] part in the novel/drama/other’s headcanons/fanart/fanfic/etc and it destroyed it for me” - Ayt, cool. No one’s asking you stay and no one’s blocking the exit. Listen, if you really can’t handle something then mute/block that content or if it’s really super bothering you and you refuse to curate your own experience then I really suggest not to join any fandom. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes. Those content we don’t like? I’m 200% certain it wasn’t made for us and that the content creator legit did not have us in their mind when creating it bc thinking in that manner is entitlement already. The most that we content creators can do is tag. Curating your experience is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AND NO ONE ELSE’S. 

PSA: It’s okay to like and dislike something WITHOUT having to justify it. There’s no need to act “woke” for your preferences on fiction. If you can’t differentiate fiction from reality, other people aren’t a danger to you - YOU are a danger to yourself and even more reason for you to curate your fandom experience.

1. When did you first watch TGS?: i was introduced to the fandom very late. we never had money to see it in theaters or buy the movie when it came out, but my aunt was able to find the movie and buy it a few days before Thanksgiving and ive been i in love ever since!!

2. Who is your favorite character?: i think it is obvious by now that my fave is none other than Phillip Carlyle! he holds a soft spot in my heart; however, i absolutely adore lettie, charity, anne, and phin as well.

3. What are your canon and fanon ships?: i love love love phinity n carwheeler!! as for fanon ships, barlyle is my number one ship (and the main one i do anything with), but i am also quite fond of phillip/phineas/charity and charity/lettie!

4. What's your favorite TGS song?: oh goodness um,,, all of them !!!!! if i had to choose, it would be either The Other Side, From Now On, or Tightrope.

5. Are you a content creator?: yes!! my ao3 is rewrite_a_million_dreams (and i also post some art on The Greatest Showman Amino as jac🌸)

6. If General Tom Thumb and The Irish Giant got into a fight, who would win and how?: my money's on charles. he's a bamf

7. If you joined Barnum's circus, what would your act be?: im tragically talentless so i'd probs just,,, stand somewhere and sing off key

Favorite fanfiction trope or AU?: fire/ice au i love p much all of the aus!! im a slut for a good modern au tbh. vampire and werewolf aus are amazing too. my fave trope is definitely the cliches, like the soulmate au where your colorblind until you meet your soulmate, or the slow burn friends-to-lovers!!

11. What's one of your favorite tgs headcanons?: i love the headcanon that Phin has ADHD. As someone with ADHD, it's really nice to see people portray a character that I love with is so accurately! I also really love the headcanon that Phil gets along so well with Caroline and Helen. It's so pure and I love how he looks out for them (and ties into the headcanon that they're living the childhood he never got to have, which makes him way anxious when they're acting rambunctious).

12. If you could ask any tgs character a question, who and what would it be?: I would ask Phillip: What made you say yes to meeting Phineas at the bar?

Woooooah ok ok ok ok that’s a lot of questions! I’ll answer ‘em though. I’ll answer ‘em real good. 21. What was the first fanfic you ever wrote?My first fanfic was Carry Me Home. Haha, my first…and my longest. I don’t know why I chose something novel-length as my introduction to writing, but I sure done did it. 23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.I like almost everything I’ve written actually, but some (because I can’t pick just one) I really loved were: April, Plead the Blood, and Daisy Chain! April was an amazing exercise in prose and literature references and heaVY HEAVY symbolism. It was also co-authored which was a blast! Plead the Blood featured my favourite scenario (Half-ghoul Amon coming face to face with Haise in a religiously symbolic setting…also that bite scene). Daisy Chain is the most positive and complex relationship I’ve ever written. It also made me happy, even if it was occasionally bittersweet, every single chapter. 24. What fic do you desperately need to rewrite or edit?*SCREAMING NOISES* Carry Me Home. Every few months I go back and edit more of that fic. Every few months I find another spelling mistake and want to rip my hair out. I also really want to rewrite the entire first arc of that fic like aiohdihebfsihfisejghsrg my writing was SO TRASHY back then. 26. How do you come up with your fanfic titles?I always come up with a title after the work is done / the first chapter is done. For large stories or “original” (non-prompted) stores I agonize over finding a significant line for ages before finally just picking a sentence that I think is stupid but eventually grow to like. All drabble fics have two titles because I want to get across a certain sense of collaboration - someone else came up with the idea and then I wrote it, so it’s a team effort. For my newest project (((I’m gonna try not to swamp their mentions with this long ass post)))) knightinironarmor, rayshippouuchia, kayvsworld, and reioka have been huge inspirations with their own writing, analysis, headcanons, and knowledge of the Marvel universe. 45. What is your all time favourite fanfic?This is a toss up between Dead-Eyed Tsuna and The Limitations of Wax. They are from totally different fandoms, are excellent for very different reasons, and resonate with me on two totally different levels. I honestly think that ray and wyrvel are unparalleled right now on the fanfic scene and that I would never be able to decide between them. 46. If someone was to read one of your fanfics, which fic would you recommend to them and why?I would probably recommend Daisy Chain. It’s a good showcase of all my abilities as a writer without being excessively long, short, symbolism-heavy, or cliche. I LOVE Hide as a character and it was wonderful to have the opportunity to write him as a kid, especially considering how little we know about his family and how complicated his relationship with Kaneki has always been.

x Now that I remember, the crux of Akira’s chara in the first TG was her dad’s death, and that arc was 1) the first major arc after Kaneki was ghoulified and 2) a major turning point in the relationship between the main ghouls and the main humans. WE’VE COME SO FAR GUYS.

x OMIGOD SHE JUST WENT AND SAID IT.

x Also Touka is so consistently pretty in :re, like she was cute before but in :re I melt every time she’s in a big panel ahhhh. I dunno if it’s Ishida’s style evolving or Touka just growing into her looks (or both) but I Don’t Care. She’s beautiful.

x I kind of knew she would react like this tho? Akira’s anger over her father’s death is always so palpable but any other emotion thrown in and its instantly muddled. Like how she was angry at Amon until she got to know the man. She knows it, she knows she needs to hone in on her anger if she wants to hold the grudge. Idk if I made sense.

x I wonder if she ever feared for her life here or if she trusted Kaneki enough to know Touka wouldn’t do anything bad.

x Just... ugh. I remember how much I hated Mado at first, especially how the anime interpreted him. And now after him being fleshed out through Akira... I can’t even hate him especially with how precious he is to her. Dad-daughter bonds get to me.

x The thing is, the moment Akira even considered this moment as Touka trying for her empathy and reacting so angrily, she’s showing that it got under her skin. And that pride for her father’s work is probably hurting right now.

x I always thought that Touka (and Ayato) had looked at Arata through rose-colored glasses. He was polite, embraced human life, was a pacifist and a scavenger - or so we viewers were led to believe. I’m glad Ishida showed his vengeful side, and that he did it through Touka. There was no way Arata could have become a kakuja and a wanted man if he had only killed one or two Doves before being captured by Mado.

x I wonder if Touka knew about this even as a child or if someone (Yomo?) gave her the talk. Also I wonder if Ayato knows. If not I want him and Touka to talk about it.

x I wonder if Touka hated her father a little bit for this. 

x I guess this implies Touka knew even as a child? Or is she saying this in retrospect?

x And this implies things about her life with Ayato after Arata’s death as well. Touka considered her dad a “failure as a parent” for letting his feelings of revenge get in the way of caring for his children. Because Touka was able to come to terms with his death enough to care for Ayato in the aftermath.

x Basically Touka is able to handle grief well and turn it into something positive, while Ayato got his ability to handle grief from Arata.

x Touka is making some extremely bold steps with Akira. Is this some kind of shock therapy or

x I don’t know. After that talk with Ayato, there is some implication that she did hate Mado even a little bit, even if she didn’t want to pursue revenge. Either that or she treats the whole incident like Amon does now - hating the way how the world is but with no real venom towards the players in the game.

x This chapter was heartwarming and beautiful and I’m so glad the main ladies of TG have somehow worked it out. I’m so proud of the three of them.
