yard work - chapter 13 (regina george x reader)
fandom: Mean Girls (all media)
pairing: Regina George x OFC/Reader
summary: You'd been in the same class as Regina George since kindergarten. You'd lived on the same street even longer. Once upon a time, when life was sandbox disputes and who got the swing first arguments, you'd even been friends. Now, in junior year of high school, you doubted she even remembered you. The same couldn't be said about you. You definitely remembered her.
warning(s): derogatory slurs! several of them!
chapter 1 / chapter 2 / chapter 3 / chapter 4 / chapter 5 / chapter 6 / chapter 7 / chapter 8 / chapter 9 / chapter 10 / chapter 11 / chapter 12 / chapter 14
It was Friday. The last day of school, the night of the talent show, and just a few days before Christmas. They'd be passing out the candy cane-grams. There'd be some assembly, probably.
Your leg jittered restlessly while you tried to focus on your bio paper. What kind of sadistic fuck assigned an essay on the last day before break? The biology teacher, apparently. He had a superiority complex, you were sure. Allergic to happiness.
Your mind kept drifting back to the photo album. Surely, Regina had it. You'd put it in her locker on Wednesday, so she'd have found it first thing Thursday morning. You hadn't dared to take a peek in her locker, afraid Gretchen would sniff you out again.
Something had clearly gone down between them. Gretchen didn't sit with them at lunch, instead opting for her boyfriend's clique. She didn't seem to fit in too well and Jason didn't seem too pleased to have her there. Karen and Regina sat by themselves, conversing casually.
Cady had been banished somewhere. You'd heard talk Aaron had dumped her. You knew Janis and Damien weren't talking to her after she turned her back on them. Since the whole Kälteen bar shebang and the subsequent smear campaign Regina had doled out, she hadn't been exactly welcome at any table. From what you understood, Gretchen and Cady were on speaking terms, but Karen and Gretchen weren't, but Cady and Karen were. It was all terribly confusing.
You had a table for yourself. Some of your old friends crowded the ones nearby, quite pointedly not sitting with you. You were no longer cool, it seemed. Easier to focus on your paper, you told yourself. The cafeteria was serving chilli today. The slop was slightly too watery and the meat was a mystery, but it'd do. You'd run out of food at home. You'd wanted a goddamn Christmas dinner and a good slab of ham got pricy. Couldn't rely on Mrs George for a feast this time around.
"Hey," Someone called near you. You looked up, surprised somebody was talking to you. A boy, more specifically a jock judging by the varsity jacket. "You good?"
"What?" Your brows furrowed. "Yeah?"
He smiled smarmily. "Cool."
And he walked away. You kept looking as he went, staring after his back. His buddies were looking your way, the same kinds of grins on their faces. That was odd. Didn't bode well.
It didn't take long for you to find out why. The period following lunch was when Damien would be visiting classrooms as Santa Claus, handing out candy canes.
He walked right up to you with a grin hidden under the fake Santa beard, wiggling his eyebrows all the while.
"The whole bag..." He drawled. "Impressive."
Confused, you peered into the sack. A couple dozen candy canes filled it, apparently all for you. You picked one out, trying to ignore the sinking feeling in your stomach as well as the snickering of the boys in the back rows.
Dyke. The message was just one word. It was clearly assigned to you, your whole name displayed proudly. Your body went numb, hands holding the candy limply. There was no signature to show who they were from. People were staring at you. Damien had lingered awhile to see what'd been written to you. The grin behind his beard had turned into a shocked scowl.
"What... What do they say?" Cady, of all people, the nerve of her, asked. She was seated a few rows from you.
"Alright, Mr Leigh, thanks for-" Ms Norbury tried to intervene.
"Dyke." You read out loud. Then you pulled out another. "Lesbo." And another. "Carpet muncher." The boys had trouble holding in their laughs. Another. "Queer." There were others you didn't deign to read out loud. Freak. Pervert. Degenerate. Homo.
If not for a few people finding all this amusing, it would've been dead silent in the classroom.
"These were supposed to be checked before handing out." Ms Norbury strode up to you and promptly confiscated the candies. Her face was set, expression severe, as she regarded Damien sternly.
"I- that wasn't my job. I don't know how, how they would've..." You watched Damien try to put it together.
"Well, is it really offensive if it's true?" Dylan, if you remembered correctly, piped up. He was a sporty guy, decently popular but nothing special. Now, though, he might as well have been an A-lister with how utterly low you'd plummeted.
Murmurs spread out around you. Damien and Ms Norbury retreated to a corner of the classroom to figure out how in the hell this had happened. People were looking at you. Your skin was crawling. It couldn't be Janis who told. She was in the same boat as you and she didn't have the power to do something like this. To make the committee ignore hateful messages meant some strings had been pulled. The only other person that knew, that could realistically do this, was Regina.
You bit your lip, closed your eyes and took a deep breath. Okay. You got the message. The album had been too much. This was a sign to stay away, to forget all the sentimentalities you'd had.
"Hey, calm down now, we'll figure this out- hey!" You didn't pause to listen to Ms Norbury when you booked it out of the stifling classroom. You couldn't bear to be there any longer.
You hid in the bathroom. Both hands held against your mouth so you wouldn't make a noise, you cried long and hard. Your breathing was choppy and laboured, and in no time at all your nose was blocked off entirely. Your eyes stung and your vision blurred.
The bell rang and pretty soon people came into the bathroom. You refused to get out, pretending to take the longest shit ever. It didn't take very long for the people coming in to discuss what had gone down in one of the junior calc classes.
It spread like wildfire. You were pretty sure the boys had nicked some of the candy canes from Ms Norbury since you could hear people reading the notes out loud, the rustling of the plastic covering.
"Who even is that?"
"Who cares? A total freak is what she is. Oh my gosh, Steph, do you think..."
"What?"
"Do you think she used the girls' bathroom? She's probably spread her diseases all over the seats! We're all gonna have gonorrhoea!"
You wanted to sink into the ground and never see daylight again. By the time the bell rang again, signalling the start of the next period, the rumours had inflated and grown disproportionately in severity.
Apparently, you were riddled with sexually transmitted diseases, preyed on freshmen and sold them hard drugs, behaved creepily in locker rooms, and had had a stint with Cady Heron while she was still with Aaron Samuels. You guessed that last one had to do with the time you'd dragged her into the janitor's closet to yell at her about the Kälteen bars.
In short, you were fucked. Your life was fucked. You'd hoped, so hoped, that even if you wouldn't get everything you wanted, you'd get some. You wouldn't get a high school girlfriend, wouldn't have slumber parties, wouldn't be normal. You wouldn't be Regina's friend. Fine. At least you could've had a quiet life, gone to community college and worked at the shop, had some buddies, and maybe lost your virginity one day. Not even that now. Not even a little bit of that. Your future in this town was just no longer there. You had nothing. You were nothing.
You skulked out of the bathroom once you were sure there'd be nobody in the halls. You got into your car and drove home. Just as you'd slumped down onto the couch, the house phone rang. Groaning, you went to answer. If it was your dad, missing it would mean there'd be hell to pay.
"Hello?" Your voice was croaky. It hurt to talk.
"Hi, sweetie! You don't sound too good." Mrs George's chirp greeted you. "I assume you had to leave school 'cause of that. I just happened to see you drive by. Rick got called to work last minute and Kylie's got tutoring till late. Come keep me company?"
"I'm not feeling too well, I'm sorry..." You said, holding the phone to your ear while your other arm wrapped around your body. You tried to breathe deep and not burst out crying, again. Your eyes felt swollen shut.
"Oh, I'll come by with some soup, then," She sounded so genuinely concerned.
You bit your lip. Tummy rumbling in its emptiness, you decided now would be as good of a time as any to bite the bullet.
"Actually, uh, if it's not too much to ask, and um- I-" You took in a shuddering breath. "You don't have to say yes, it's totally okay and I'm sorry if this is, like, too much-"
"Sweetpea, just ask." She chuckled.
"I don't have any food. Or, like, I have ingredients for Christmas 'cause I wanted to make dinner for myself, but I guess I forgot I have to eat before then too?" You tried to laugh, but the sound was strained. "Um, could you take me to the soup kitchen downtown?"
You could've driven yourself. You could've, in that you were capable of driving yourself, but with how your vision was impaired, how your body ached with loneliness, and how you weren't sure you wouldn't just impulsively drive into oncoming traffic, you doubted you would've survived the trip.
"No." She said bluntly. You flinched, feeling the refusal like a knife to the gut. "No, absolutely not. We are going grocery shopping and getting you food to last the rest of the damn year. I'm picking you up."
"Mrs George, I don't have money-"
"You shouldn't be spending your hard-earned money like that. Doesn't your dad send you enough to cover utilities?"
"He sends me grocery money. I gotta pay for gas and stuff on my own."
Mrs George's resounding silence spoke volumes of her opinion on that. "I'm coming to get you. I'm buying you groceries and then we're gonna meal prep. Okay?"
"Okay."
When Mrs George saw you, her determined attitude shifted to that of maternal worry. You fought hard not to break down, though all you really wanted to do was curl into her and cry your little heart out.
She drove you to Whole Foods, a place way out of your budget. But she insisted, so there was little you could do. She took you from aisle to aisle, prattling on and on, chatting about this and that. You listened mostly silently, humming here and there.
She picked out a lot of canned stuff, like beans and tomato purée. All that stuff was made to last forever, so you wouldn't always have to buy fresh ingredients. She bought all your favourite snacks, which she somehow remembered. When you commented on that, she just pointed at her temple with a knowing grin. Mothers never forget, she'd said.
Once you were all done, the cart was quite literally overflowing. The total nearly made your stomach drop out of your ass. Mrs Geoge simply flashed her black card and, without even a wince, paid the price. The receipt was, like, three feet long.
Carrying it all to her car was a daunting task, but a worker did come to help you. A young man, probably home from college, was all too eager to carry the bags for Mrs George.
The way he was blushing all the way up to his ears, the way she was amused by him but not receptive, made you think about what Regina had said months ago. You'd been on your way to her nail appointment and she'd gone on a tangent about how women died at menopause.
Mrs George was thriving. She was above it all. Her worth, or mortality, wasn't determined by the men around her. She'd been cheated on, continuously neglected by her husband, and put down by her teenage daughter, and still, she was beautiful. She existed independently.
In short, you were right and Regina was wrong. You saw things how they really were. She saw things tilted to the left, through a warped lens. The confirming of this brought you no comfort, she'd already ruined you and there was no redeeming herself after this, at least not for you.
"Phew, what a trip, right?" She nudged you with her elbow as she buckled her seatbelt.
You nodded along, voice still weak. You buckled in as well.
"I'll pick you up for the talent show." She said as she turned away from the parking lot. "Oooh, we should have a night in. Order some pizzas and slob around the couch. How's that sound?"
"I don't think I should go to the talent show."
"Oh, why's that?"
"Just... Something happened at school. I don't wanna go."
Mrs George frowned and glanced at you. "Honey, you know you can tell me anything. I still think you should come."
"Everybody hates me." You faced the window and crossed your arms. Very mature.
"I'm sure that's not true." She sighed. "I'm not supposed to tell you, but Regina's got something prepared for you. I think you should go see her at least."
Your face twisted in anger. "Something prepared for me- like she prepared something for me today? I don't fucking think so."
"Language." She said and you grumbled. "What do you mean?"
"Nothing. It's nothing." You rubbed your hands down your jeans. "It's not gonna be good. She's gonna humiliate me."
"It's supposed to be a surprise, but I can guarantee that she's not going to humiliate you."
"What do you know?" You turned to her with narrowed eyes.
"I've been hearing her practice, is all." She responded, tone much too light.
You studied her face carefully. "Fine."
She smiled, seemingly relieved. Then, as if to cut the tension in the car, said:
"Oh, and by the way, I'm filing for divorce." With a giddy smile on her face, she blurted it out. You just stared for a while, almost suffering whiplash from the sudden change in topic.
"Uh... Finally." You laughed a little as you said that.
"Yeah!" She laughed with you. "It's been a long time coming. I just needed to sort some things out. Emotionally and financially. I had to get rid of some investments so I wouldn't have to pay alimony."
Your jaw dropped. The Georges were, like, filthy rich. Rich beyond reason, excess income to a ridiculous degree. You'd always assumed it was Mr George's money. How archaic of you.
"I... I kinda wished you'd done it sooner." You looked forward again. She was driving carefully since the snow made the roads prone to ice.
"Me too. The girls... They... I thought that having two parents would be the most stable, safe environment for them. I was wrong."
"Yeah." You swallowed. "Um. Since we're, like, just saying things. I'm, by the way, gay. Like, a lesbian."
"That's wonderful, honey!"
"Yeah." You couldn't say you agreed.
"Should we go get you a haircut?"
"I don't need to look any more butch than I do."
"I don't know, I think you'd look dashing." She feigned light-hearted. "Regina might like it."
"Mrs George!"
Notes: More drama! Yay! Do y'all think Regina did it?

100 Moby-Dick covers ranked by your's truly. Thank you so much to all those of you who sent in contributions and helped make this completely out of proportion project a thing. Jars of angelic spermaceti for everyone! 🤍
As for the ranking, it is purely the result of my own personal taste in aesthetics and heavily influenced by my perception of the story. Add to that a generous amount of sentimentality, as shall be apparent.
What I have been mainly looking at in judging the designs is as follows...
- General appearance; is it attractive? 💕
- Does it help sufficiantly communicate the nature of the story (theme, genre, mood, plot)? ⚰️
- Is it canon? (Meaningful creative licence perfectly allowed!) ✅️
As for the tiers themselves, we have...
Topmost Greatness: this is something out of the ordinary, possibly genius and also I neeeeed it for my collection!
A: Good, good stuff, but might lack that very extra special something
B: Gets the job done, agreeable, totally okay.
C: It's not exactly bad and I'll let that oopsie over there slide, but I probably wouldn't pay much for this one.
You Had One Job: Yeah, you did.
Should Never Have Surfaced: Makes the Pequod tragedy look like a merry holiday.
Art thou ready?
TOPMOST GREATNESS
1. The most beautiful Moby-Dick cover I've ever seen. I was almost tempted to create a tier higher than Topmost Greatness only so that I could place it there.
2. Brilliant composition and color choice, despite its simplicity it hits me straight in the soul.
3. I remember drooling over this in the book store back in the day and considered reading it only because it was so gorgeous. Manages to be both crowded and clean at the same time. Story instantly recognizable.
4. The classiest of all time? Forever a winner!
5. I show the image of this one to people to make them understand the creative brilliancy that thrives within the Moby-Dick community.
6. Captures the mood in a fittingly crooked, awkward way that makes my heart beat faster. (Also reminds me of my copy of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest for some reason.)
7. Another sort of awkward one, but I love the style, I love the surreal combination of drama and stiffness, pretty fitting the story itself. Makes 'Hab look a bit like the Grim Reaper.
8. The erratic painting technique gives me the perfect kind of crazy vibes.
9. Moby-Dick, a bibliophile's dream, topmost mood nailing, superior dark academia accessory... what more could anyone wish for in a book?
10. So well thought out and the claustrophobic feel helps to create an unsettling mood despite the otherwise quite cheery colors. Sorry, Madagascar.
11. Look, my two main areas of Moby-Dick interest is Ahab and rhe psychology, so... y'know.
12. Mood certainly set.
13. Guess I have a thing for harpoon/eye symbolism. Again that claustrophobic feel by leaving only a sliver of crowded surface.
14. First physical Moby-Dick copy I ever bought. All the books in this Penguin series are gorgeous, but to me this is one of the design winners regardless of the contents.
15. Unsettled in all this tropical serenity yet?
16. The boldness in color choice and to focus on the fire theme is as unusual as it is exciting, and the very modern touch makes it even more interesting!
A.
17. Not normally a style I'm drawn to, but somehow this manages to capture my interest. A successful nod to the painting at the Spouter Inn, lovely line work. My sibling got me this one as a locket for my last b-day.
18. My beloved companion, by now containing almost as much tape as paper. The 19th century poster design is irresistable to me. A white tail would've been even cooler though.
19. It's not that unique looking, yet the worn feel and harpooned Moby Dick simply gets to me somehow.
20. All the crucial elements skillfully and effectivly forged (no pun intended) together.
21. The way the psychology has been captured and the missing leg detail is yum!
22. Kind of busy but so unique and interesting! Yes plz.
23. Another classic! How could Kent's iconic whale ever fail?
24. Aiming for the adventure theme, it appears, and successfully so. Unusual color choice which I happen to be all about. Total vintage feel!
25. Again, not that much is happening, but the ropes, the character design, the inking... I love you, cover, and I need you in my life!
26. An often used scene, but the style gets to me so, so bad.
27. I'm not that much about the washed out color, but the rest is love.
28. Very basic, but also very nice and display friendly and I enjoy the vibe so much.
29. Almost made it to Topmost, but the positioning of the illustration gives off a cheap feel to me. Why couldn't you have used that gorgeous theme depiction to better advantage? Can one order a remake? Or a cropped poster?
30. Love the composition so much but the technique simply doesn't do it quite enough for me to move up one full notch. Still want it so bad for the collection though.
31. Runny ink on pure white is something I associate with Moby-Dick, don't know why. The blotchiness is a really great touch.
32. The design doesn't say much concerning the content, but nevertheless it is so pretty and am I correct when I say there's harpoon vibes?
33. Had that been a white whale, it would've ended up under Topmost!
34. My first reaction to this was that it's a really interesting piece of art, but I wasn't so sure I liked it as much in book cover form. The more I look at it, the more intrigued and enamoured I get. I want more of this.
35. Ahab and Moby Dick from Ahab's POV? Love the distorted psychedelic atmosphere, but another one with missed full illustration use potential.
B.
36. Brings back the menory of cigarettes and fear. Granny the Gregory Peck fan owned one of these and it freaked me out where she kept it on display ever after I'd been forced to watch the movie at age 6. Now I want one just for the hell of it.
37. Okay, so hear me out. I know it's a children's book, but the illustrator obviously knew the story. Love the tangling rope and that Ahab's prosthetic leg seems made out of whale bone rather than wood for once.
38. Nice modern touch, but that's straight up the New Bedford whaler statue, which kinda ruins it for me.
39. Lovely, lovely design, but I simply don't associate it with a story about suicidal tendencies, gore, and mass death.
40. A somewhat unusual character choice to pose on a cover, but hey, I'll take it! :D
41. Doesn't pop, but I do like me some traditional Japanese art vibes!
42. Elegant, but the huge M obscures the title text and the harpoon looks as if crossed with a sewing needle.
43. Basic, but the feel is there and I like the color combination for this story.
44. Love the art and it's impossible not to identify which story this is, but I have several Ahab design choice questions which won't leave me.
45. This whole thing is odd and busy, but I also really like it!
46. Speaking of Japanese traditional art. The lines and the moodiness is much to my liking.
47. Simple, spot on, nothing that extra.
48. If only he hadn't looked so damn happy about it as if Ahab was about to throw that harpoon like a stick for him to fetch. Untold plot line??
49. There is this whole sub genre of Moby Dick balancing the Pequod, a concept that certainly works, but by now it has to have that little extra something to seem truly special.
50. We have a less erroneous whale, folks! It may be a stock image, but Ishmael gave this one thumbs up, and so how could I possibly do differently? Nicely done!
51. First, I get strong The Old Man and the Sea impressions. Second, what kind of whale do you intend to kill with that thing, my dude? Points for canonical end game beard though.
52. I assume this is meant as a traditional Polynesian art style nod in honor of our dear Queequeg. The sports wear lining texture in the title letters confuses me though.
53. There certainly are plenty of canon here, but also, this is some odd mayhem and where are you aiming, Captain? Yay, ivory leg again!
54. Basic, works perfectly fine.
55. This is a really odd scene choice to pick for a cover, but I love this edition and its illustrations to bits. In fact, I'm planning on posting a review of it soon.
C.
56. I haven't peeked into Melville's mind, but I'm pretty sure the Pequod looked quite different. The story is unmistakable though.
57. Nothing wrong with it, I guess, but way too messy for me to be comfortable with.
58. Not much to say here, but a perfectly nice-looking cover for any book.
59. Gets the job done, but not that inspiring.
60. Despite seemingly little effort behind it, this design based on a 19th century (erroneous) whale drawing could have gone straight up to A. You see, in the original image the (erroneous) whale has his penis (erroneous?) in full view, but on this cover it has been erased. How could I not have given a Moby-Dick book cover depicting dozens of (erroneous) whale dicks A? Alas.
61. Good, professional-looking cover, but judging by the illustration only, I would have guessed this was a children's book about the adventures of a jolly porpoise named Toni.
62. No spoilers to see here or anything. Is that a gold prosthetics??
63. This looks so much like a academic book on psychology. Not too far off, I suppose, but I wouldn't be able to figure out which famous story it is.
64. The Temple toggle harpoon was invented in 1848. Do with this information what you will.
65. Hey! That other cover from before! Have to say that the color alterations and helm sihouette wasn't an improvement.
66. A bit extreme for me.
67. I call this excessive simplicity. If you need a copy of Moby-Dick, you will recognize it at once, but it might not attract new readers merely in itself.
68. Just because it's a children's book doesn't mean the vibe has to be off, but I think it is in this case. Recently posted an example of this illustrator's adorable Ishmael here.
69. Where's the title? Confusing for a cover, but I would love this for a poster of mug! Also, the biggest words are Ahab, Queequeg, and Pequod, which I find mildly insulting towards a certain someone. What was he called again?
70. Cool whale picture which I really like, but the accuracy for Moby-Dick isn't really there.
71. It's blue.
72. I understand the idea and the illustration is awesome, but for me, the vibe is strangely all off and I get almost a comedic feel. Again, that's just me.
73. I often feel like an Ahab apologist and can often be somewhat harsh on the whale, but holy shit! A sort of red herring situation meant to make the reader think Ahab will be the winner?
74. It looks full of action and Scrooge's Ahab cosplay look is really neat, but I have... concerns.
75. I don't remember the scene playing out like this and Ahab is clearly not having it.
YOU HAD ONE JOB
76. The exact face I made the first time I saw this kind of cover.
77. After all the people I've heard at the museum mistaking the sperm whale skeleton for an orca, I'm honestly surprised these fails aren't more common. The snowy setting is a nice touch.
78. Hast seen the white beluga?!
79. First shark Moby-Dick I ever saw and during my first week on Tumblr even. The nostalgia is real, shipmates.
80. Cool scene. Where is it from?
81. Come on! This is a fucking Wordsworth's edition!
82. My sentiments exactly.
83. No, it isn't.
84. At first I seriously thought this was some interesting modern sci-fi/fantasy take on Moby-Dick. Nope.
85. At least the person who did this one bothered to give it a traditional nautical flair.
86. The ocean is canon.
87. *screaming shark mode*
SHOULD NEVER HAVE SURFACED
88. Someone's dad is balancing on top of a fire breathing eel whilst ravens are flying around and a poor guy has dark thoughts in the bottom right corner and... I dunno, man. "Whaling voyage turns fatal obsession" apparently. Moby-Dick the Prequel?
89. Whoa, dude!! I know you're angry, but holy shit!
90. "Captain Ahab? He went that way. Me? Just your average cliché 18th century pirate. If you don't mind me asking, sir, what sort of creature are you?"
91. By "annotated" they mean the truth about Wild Bill Hickok's one time side gig as a whaler. There's a fan fiction idea for ya.
92. What in the everloving AI fuck is happening here?
93. Friends, your guesses are as good as mine.
94. In the early 2020s, the ghost of Melville Herman set out to find the ghost of Moby Dick.
95. I guess we never learned what Ahab's dad died from back in the 18th century. Runs in the family and all that.
96. ?????????
97. If you download a public domain work to sell on Amazon for a possible extra buck, taking one minute to check the basic plot before slapping a stock image on it for a cover will be an actual long term investment.
98. "Lol! U overbite!"
99. Well, he is clearly a zombie whale, so maybe this is the sequel then?
100. And thus endeth MOBY D CK.

Since people like my headcanon so much.. TAKE MORE ADAMAI HEADCANONS AHAHAHAHA
He hasn’t seen the last of me his goofy ass can never escape my death grip
1. Adamai isn’t really know for personality, back then sure he was actually quite social but he never really fit in so he just kinda gave up.
2. This fucker has the WORST social skills horrible even since Adamai never really had friends besides yugo he doesn’t know how to socialize or start conversations
3. He fidgets a lot, although it’s not noticeable he does fidget with his hands when he gets impatient or annoyed.
4. He doesn’t show much emotion he’s very stoic (this is canon mind you) he can handle things like getting yelled at or being talked down he does complain about it later tho.
5. I like to believe Adamai is very oblivious to specific things like social cues and people dropping hints about wanting to surprise him or even be his friend.
6. He’s smart and VERY hyper-aware like extremely hyper-aware although yes he’s oblivious to specific things this fucker can pick up on things very quickly. Example: someone trying to sabotage him? He will immediately know.
7. He is very good at arguments and will go by any means necessary if he wants to win said argument.
8. He can fight, very VERY well this man can absolutely kick your ass.
9. He likes to draw

Whos the best daddy: oda, jingyuan or childe?
WELCOME TO THE DADDY OLYMPICS 🔥
I shall be your fine hostess for the evening so BUCKLE UP! We have a fine selection of men here, all amazing but do not be fooled by their charms, they are beyond deadly!! In the wise words of Mr Pedro Pascal "Daddy is a state of mind." and today, we shall find out which one of these three men has what it takes!
The first man we have is the 11th Harbinger, Tartaglia! Or Childe! Or Ajax! Or however the fuck you want to call him, he has too many names!! (One is enough my good Sir.)
Renowned as a family man, Mr Tartaglia writes letters to his whole family and loves all of his siblings very much, so much so that he is willing to lie in order to keep their dreams intact. While some people might argue what he is doing is wrong (and in a way they're right) but his intentions are always pure and just wants his family to have a good life.
What a gem of a man!
We are also aware that this man is LOADED, so his family or friends do not need to worry about any expenses whatsoever, regardless of how much they cost, Mr Tartaglia has you COVERED!
However.
As unfortunate as it may be, Mr Tartaglia simply lacks the certain finesse that your classic Daddy™ requires to have. His boyish charms are out of this world but they are indeed just that - boyish!
Besides, I personally believe that he'd be more of a "Sir" type of guy. "Sir" and "Daddy" are indeed powerful authority figures but there is a slight difference there.
The final ranking for Mr Tartaglia is 6/10. He is handsome and strong, but he's too much of a kind elder brother figure, or a "Sir" to ever truly quality as a Daddy. At least, that's what I think.
Oh boy, it's getting saucy now! 🥴🤤
This is general Jing Yuan, a man renowned for his lazy and carefree attitude but behind that smile is an incredible tactician who can strike like a lion at any given moment. Despite his attitude, be very, very afraid of him.
Isn't that just so sexy of him?
Tall, husky and sweet, Jing Yuan fits the mold of "Daddy" quite nicely. And to top it off, he has a young child under his care! Their interactions are heartwarming and precious, I can't stop staring at the screen whenever the two are on it and I know for a fact that I'm not alone there <333
His out of this world voice (I'm talking about the English dub) makes me melt - if he tells me to do something, I will do it.
No questions asked.
His authority as a general also gives him great power and leverage as well. A kind man who has the ability to crush anyone who gets in his way is always an amazing Daddy™!
I simply must give this beautiful general a perfect 10/10 score! 😍
And finally, the last man of the hour is the darling Oda Sakunosuke, or Odasaku for short! <33 :3
Where, oh where do I begin with this man? He has the blood of many people on his hands and yet, he managed to worm his way into the heart of the Port Mafia's youngest but most dangerous executive that has ever lived, which is nothing to scoff at I assure you.
While his status as a mafioso gives an air of uncertainty about his whereabouts and well being, it is safe to say that he, like Jing Yuan, is quite the Daddy™. Kind, caring but also incredibly humorous, he is the ideal package. Walks and coffee shop dates would be beyond interesting with this man and besides, I'm sure that his long and slender fingers will be good for other things besides writing! ;)
This man also takes care of an entire gaggle of orphans! Isn't he just amazing?!
Unfortunately, there is one glaring issue though -
His kids are dead!!
That's right you heard it here folks, his kids got blown up! Don't worry Odasaku, I'll be more than happy to give you as many kids as you want! Do you want a son? A daughter? Both??
My body is READY!
As much as I want to give this man a 10, his job and the fact that his kids are blown to bits knocks out a point. I'm sorry Odasaku, but your final ranking is a strong and massive 9/10.
Folks, this is where you step in! Yes that's right, YOU! YOU vote which one of these men is the ✨ ULTIMATE DADDY! ✨

Boredom Buster
By joybucket
1. Which color do you like better: pink or purple?
It’s hard because I do like both of these colours, but I’m going to say Purple.
2. What did you do for Halloween this year?
I took my kids out Trick or Treating.
3. Will you/did you vote in the 2024 presidential election?
No I don’t - I’m British.
4. Have you ever had an allergic reaction to a pet the owner claimed was hypoallergenic?
Not that I’m aware of. I think most people are sensitive to animal dander especially certain breeds, but my allergies often are more hay fever based. In any case I’d not tell someone their pet upset my allergies as it’s not their fault.
5. What is your favorite thing about the month of November?
There isn’t really anything I can think of. It’s one of those months my SAD can play up in. Only things I can think of is my Mum and nephews birthdays.
6. What are three things you will be saying "no" to this November?
Any requests that don’t fit me - I need to start being more assertive.
7. What is your favorite thing about fall?
I love the leaves falling and changing colour. I also love a lot of the food and drink.
8. Do you celebrate Thanksgiving?
No, I’m British sooooo…
9. Do you wear glasses, and if so, when was the last time you got new glasses? 🤓
I only wear glasses that are magnified so only use when reading and it’s been a few years now
10. Have you ever been to Catholic Mass?
I did go once yes. It was very long. My Grans friend was babysitting me and she was going, so I went as well.
11. What was the last thing you ordered online?
Groceries.
12. What color is your favorite sweater?
I have a few. It’s likely to be black or blue as most of mine are these colours.
13. Do you suffer from a chronic illness, and if so, what illness(es) do you have?
Not chronic illness as such I was born with a visual impairment, which makes me registered blind but with usable sight. I also have CPTSD and reoccurring depression which could be described as chronic.
14. When was the last time you can remember feeling lonely?
Last week. Sometimes with my family I feel left out and disliked and everything I do is annoying.
15. If you've ever been financially lower class, what is/was your least favorite thing about being poor, and what is/was your favorite thing about it? Why?
I’d say we were close but not quite. I think simple pleasures like nice walks and picnics instead of restaurants was the best. Worst was not being able to afford some school trips.
16. Are your parents divorced?
No, they are not. They do argue an awful lot and nearly have a few times, though.
17. What are three things that have happened in your life that you never would have expected to happen?
Hmmm I mean most things I never expected as I don’t really preempt exact things that happen to me except from a danger perspective and even then I somehow have still been surprised when they happened. I’d say having children is one as I always wanted to be a Mum but for some reason thought I couldn’t get pregnant. Another I guess would be some of the bad things that happened to me as was more then one so after the first thought I’d had my fill but nope. Third maybe doing some things I swore to myself I’d never do.
18. What are three things you wish you could change about your life right now?
Emotional security and stability, the same thing I wish for every day Pinky.
19. Do you have trust issues?
Oh hell yes! I’m nice to everyone and very open. I don’t have taboo subjects and will give everyone a chance. I’ll also listen to and support anyone. None of this says I trust people though and on a whole I don’t. I give people the benefit of the doubt but I am always suspicious.
20. How many relatives do you have whose first name begins with the same letter as yours?
Mum is the only one I can think of.
21. What do you think is the ugliest old people name?
Ethel maybe? I don’t find any names outright ugly just outdated or odd.
22. What is one holiday you have never celebrated?
Thanksgiving, as British.
23. Do you prefer apple cinnamon or pumpkin spice?
Apple cinnamon - I don’t like pumpkin flavoured things.
24. Which social media platform do you post on the most?
Reddit probably or here. I used to be on FB a lot but not nowadays.
25. Do you think you look good in fall colors?
Yeah, I think they’re quite nice on me.
26. What is one thing you wish you had the money to buy?
A house. Or even just a nice holiday.
27. What is one food you don't eat because it makes you feel sick?
Sprouts maybe?
28. What is your opinion on s'mores?
They’re quite nice.
29. How many cats have you owned in your lifetime?
3. Bubbles, Buttons and Douglas. Bubbles and Buttons were sisters and complete opposites. Bubbles was so named because she was black with little wispy white circles, like bubbles. She was very nurturing, maternal but Buttons (who was named after being white with Grey and Brown thicker circles like buttons) was quite feral. Buttons had a few kittens which Dougal was one. We got to keep one of the kitties and I chose Dougal, so he was technically mine.
30. Do you listen to any podcasts regularly, and if so, which ones?
I do. I love true crime ones and the list is large. One of my favourites is Casefikle. I also have a lot of Science ones of various topics like illnesses, psychology, neurology etc.
31. Have you ever been interviewed for a podcast?
No - but I’d be so up for that!
32. Last but not least, did you enjoy this survey?
I did - it got deeper for me than I was expecting but that’s good :)

Part One | Chapter Two: Me And My Husband
Greenwich Village, New York
May 1919
Liberty Eagle Elementary lets out earlier than usual due to the heat wave. Parents gather outside the building, looking for their children. I walk out with two students, holding their hands reassuringly, and bring them out to the crowd. When they find their parents, they run to them, embracing as they always do because the 7 hours they've spent separated from one another are just cruel, and cruelly spent learning about things their little minds do not care for just yet.
My class is one of those, a tedious one no doubt, for children between the ages of 9 and 10. French is not an easy language to learn, and while I try my hardest to make the subject interesting, there will always be moments of frustration and exhaustion. The children surely complain about their horrible French teacher who forces them to make sounds they've never previously made, the sound of me echoing, "From the throat! From the throat, mes amies!" in their heads as they fall asleep at night.
The final child leaves and then I do as well, beginning the short walk home.
I do enjoy working with children, even though I complain about it often. Despite not being a very maternal person, I find children fun to be around. Their blunt way of speaking and frustrations are easy to share as an outsider in America. Children, I think, are outsiders after all, just learning to fit into the society of adults through the education they receive in these schools. They learn history, just as I did before arriving in New York, and they learn how to form proper sentences as I did when I was younger, my parents making sure I knew how to speak more than just French.
I'd like to be a close friend to these innocent children, but this may be because it's been a struggle to find my own adult friends during the two years I've been in America. New York, we researched, would be an area filled with strangers and people from all over, coming together to make a new culture, a new identity. Although I'm legally American now, I'm much more European in my ways and manner, the French in my culture.
I did insist when Harry proposed the idea of running away from England that it would take time to get used to a foreign place, but he welcomed the idea like a challenge while I worried at night.
Harry hasn't had the time to properly integrate himself into society yet, having just returned from France on Christmas last year. He was supposed to teach history in a high school just two miles from Liberty Eagle, but he's been failing his wellness examinations.
Harry and I run on a schedule on weekdays. At 7 in the morning, I wake up and get ready to go to school. Harry's normally already awake, eating his breakfast in the dining room. When I arrive downstairs, he'll pick his head up from the book he's reading and nod at the french press with the hot coffee. I'll sit across from him and sip at my coffee. I'll make small talk with him: "How did you sleep?" or "It was quite cold last night, wasn't it?" or "I think I'll be home a little late today." Harry nods and answers my questions and then tells me what he plans to make for dinner. I agree with him and then say goodbye. He follows me to the door and locks it behind me.
Weekends are trickier. I wake up later than usual and lazily move to the kitchen. Harry wakes at his usual time, this time sitting on the couch, reading his book. I make the same small talk, but this time I can't run away from the awkwardness between us. I sit there and try to continue the conversation with him. Then I do that for Sunday.
When I arrive home today, Harry's pacing in the living room, running a hand messily through his hair. It used to be longer than it is now, touching his shoulders, but since he had an evaluation today, he was forced to cut it. I can see his face much better this way and the white scar that cuts through his left eyebrow. His curls are healthy and dark, bouncing back as he continues to mess with them. The sound of the door closing causes him to look up, startled.
"Hi," I say, putting my bag down. I remove my shoes and open the collar of my shirt. "It's very hot outside. They let us out early."
Harry nods. His own collar is open. "It is hot."
"How did your evaluation go?"
"I didn't pass."
He's laid out the papers with the red slashes on the dining table. I pick up one sheet and peer at it, tackling all the red specifically. Harry continues to pace behind me, the wood floor creaking under his weight.
The comment at the bottom reads:
Although Mr. Styles has shown promise in his recovery, the Board of Administrations believes some more time would be suitable before allowing Mr. Styles to return. Mr. Styles' progression is impressive compared to previous evaluations, however, we cannot permit him to return to his post and continue working with children. We will reconvene and reevaluate Mr. Styles August 25, 1919.
I look through the rest of the documents. "They didn't even give a reason?"
"They said there's something off about me," Harry says, taking the paper from me. "Fuck's sake."
At first glance, Harry does seem recovered and collected, but when you hear him speak and spend time with him, you suspect he may be on the verge of a breakdown at any given moment. I don't reply, unsure whether or not to show my support of this evaluation. Time off has been good for Harry, I agree, and his condition shouldn't affect how he behaves with children.
Harry itches to return back to work. It's partially because he doesn't like the fact that I'm single handedly keeping our heads above water and partially because he chooses to ignore the impact of his military service on him.
"Annaliese," he says, leaning against the wall connecting our dining room and kitchen. He looks very attractive in his suit as opposed to his normal casual wear. "I don't know how much longer I can do this."
His eyelids are heavy, and he looks tired, shoulders falling from exhaustion.
"August 25 is only three months away," I tell him in an attempt to be optimistic. "You'll be back just in time for the reopening of schools."
"If I pass."
"I know you will." I smile at him, nodding firmly. "I believe it."
His eyes narrow, resting his head back against the wall. "You've said that the past two times."
It's true, but I know he's closer to passing this time. "We'll be alright, Harry. If you're worried about the money, it's not all that bad. We have savings and more than enough to keep us comfortable. That, plus what the government sends us for your service."
Harry pushes himself off the wall and gathers all the papers, tucking them into the manila folder. He sits down heavily and rubs his temple, taking a few deep breaths.
"Sit, Annaliese."
I do, watching him carefully.
He takes a moment to gather his thoughts. "I want to get out of here," he says, leaning in as if he's telling me a secret. "How about this weekend?"
A getaway? Now? "Harry, you can't keep running from your problems."
"It was your idea to run away the first time, Annaliese," he says dryly with a twitch of his scarred eyebrow. "You wanted to avoid the war."
Irritation pricks at my face. "And you wanted to run from your father."
Harry's jaw tenses as it always does his father is brought up in conversation, but he attacked first, so it's my turn. "I'm not running away from anything. And you'd be there too."
I lean back against the chair, surprised. "You'd want me to go with you?"
"Christ, you think I'd go by myself? Don't be ridiculous."
"Well, yes," I say sharply. "You're the type to do that."
"Maybe before I had a wife I would. So will you come?" He pauses and fixes his impatient tone. "I'm thinking of Atlantic City. You said your friend was there just last month."
My friend he's remembering is the neighbor. Her name is Alexandra, a mother of two, and the most insufferable woman I've ever met, but she's the only one who I've been able to speak to thanks to the close proximity. I always bump into her when she's walking to work in the same direction as me.
"Right, but I'd have to ask her how to get there and you know how much I hate talking to her. My life goal is to avoid her at all costs. Last time I went over for a recipe, she told me about her weird brother who threatened to kill his wife. Now, why the hell would I want to hear about that?"
"I know. I'd go if I could, but we need those directions soon. Pop in and get the directions, and leave."
"You know she's going to hold me hostage, Harry."
"I know. But it's better than blindly figuring it out ourselves. It's Wednesday. Is the weekend too soon for you?"
"No," I reply, thinking about my kids and how they could probably use a lighter lesson on Friday. "I should be good."
"Do you want to go?" From his voice, I can tell he's worried about him being my only company. I wish he'd look at me.
Of course I want to go, and the thought of being alone with just Harry and nowhere to run is exciting, but nerve wracking.
I recall the last time he said to me he wanted to just leave for a few days. It was only 3 years ago after he had a physical fight with his father and came back wounded and blind angry, seething with rage and the need to physically harm something else. After I ordered him to sit still so I could clean the blood spilling from his shoulder where his father's ring had cut him, he demanded we go someplace, just the two of us. It had been our first getaway, our first night alone from his family who I was staying with. Just the two of us, nervous young adults in a hotel room with one bed and barely enough space to pass each other.
This time is different. Instead of deciding for the two of us that we needed to leave our home for a weekend, he's asking. One proper glance at his face tells me he's growing more and more desperate with every passing second I spend not replying to him.
"I do," I tell him sincerely. "I'll go see Alexandra before dinner. Harry, are you sure this is what you want? When we come back, all of this will still be here. This anxiety about the evaluations, the need to return back to work when you're still unable to. It won't just go away while we do."
Harry nods, absentmindedly looking over my shoulder. "I know. But just for two days, I'll be alright."
"Is two days really enough? Shouldn't we work on this fear together? Here? We have to one day."
"Annaliese," Harry says, focusing back on me briefly, nervously messing with his sleeves. "I don't want to. I want to go away and come back with a clearer head. I don't care that it's not a long term solution. It'll help me for two days and that's more than I already get."
That's the thing about Harry: he's stubborn. I love him dearly, but he doesn't budge when he makes a decision until I argue with him about it. These days, we don't argue a lot. Albeit, we don't talk much either, and sometimes I miss those nights where we'd yell at each other, passionately arguing for ourselves and then reaching a common goal, returning to bed happily. It's the nature of our relationship and it has been for the years I've been with him. It's one of the things I love about him: how passionate he can be for the things he believes in. A part of me wants to go against my own wishes and argue with him about this proposed getaway, just to rile him and demand him to yell, fight for what he believes in instead of holding back and returning to his own room, leaving me alone in the dining room until I head back to my room. This is the irrational part of me.
The more rational part of me reminds myself that Harry has been through a lifetime worth of trouble and avoiding those kinds of arguments are best for his health, mentally and emotionally. I can't help but feel selfish when I want him to talk to me like he used to, touch me like he used to, and kiss me. He's rarely ever around me and when he is, he's rarely ever fully present.
"I'll talk to Alexandra today and we'll figure all of this out tonight."
He nods and then stands up, tucking the manila folder under his arm. "I'll start on dinner then."
Before he can leave, I stand up and quickly grab his sleeve, halting him in his steps. He looks at me and then glances down at my hand clutching his shirt.
"Can you stay in our room tonight?" I quickly ask before my confidence leaves me. "I'd really like that. It's been so long since we've slept together."
His eyes have darkened by the time he looks back at my face, jaw tense. "I don't think that's a good idea."
"Why not?" I press, stepping closer. I lay a hand on his torso and feel his stomach muscles tense. "Harry, it's been months."
"I don't want to. I want my own room--"
"But--"
"Annaliese, please don't argue with me right now. I have a headache."
"I don't mean you have to sleep with me. I don't mean sex. Just want you to sleep in the same bed as me. Like a normal married couple."
I let go of him when he doesn't reply, taking a step back. "I haven't even done anything to you. Why are you punishing me?" I demand.
Here come the fucking tears. God, I hate being weak. Desperate to hide them, I blink furiously and look at our feet, trying even out my voice. "If I've done something wrong, I'd like you to tell me so I can apologize and work on being better." Realizing my tears will not just dry up, I look back up to his stoic expression, demanding through my swimming vision, "What did I do?"
Harry watches a tear slide down my face and then my hand that angrily wipes it away. A muscle in his jaw jumps. "I didn't say you did anything. If anything, sleeping next to you is a punishment for me," Harry says quietly, stepping back, turning towards the kitchen. I reach out and quickly grab his shirt again, holding him in place.
"No. You don't get to walk away from this conversation. I've been trying to have it for months now. Why would it be a punishment for you? What have I done to you that's so bad, you can't find it in yourself to forgive me?"
"Christ, Annaliese. Let me go," Harry says coldly. He moves out of my grasp despite my strong hold on him and disappears into the kitchen. "Let me start on dinner and we can talk about this later."
We are not going to talk about it later. He's made excuses many times. I drag a hand over my face to catch any residue of my weakness. Helpless is what I feel now, and especially when he walks away from an important, long overdue conversation we must have. All I want is to be able to read his mind for a day, just to know what's troubling him the most. Instead of being helpful, I feel like a mother who can't get her child to sit still and just listen. Perhaps my help at the school feels rewarding because those children demonstrate that they've learned the lessons I've been teaching them. With Harry, it's like talking to a wall sometimes. It was never like that before.
I gather myself and then exit the house, walking across the street to Alexandra's house.
***
Alexandra never talks about anything positive, especially when it comes to gossip. She makes me write down the instructions on how to get to Atlantic City after getting the information from her husband, and then begins her usual gossip.
Then, to my horror, she makes me sit down for a cup of tea.
"My cousin's husband was diagnosed just last week," she starts, taking a sip of her tea.
I desperately look at the door, hoping someone will save me from this conversation, but nothing happens. I glance back at her and offer her a tight smile. "I hope everything is okay."
Alexandra has lived in America her whole life. Her grandparents came to America from Ireland in the early 19th century and lived in New York. Alexandra grew up in the south, in Georgia, and moved here to live with her husband who I rarely ever see. She's quite attractive with her long dark hair, blue eyes, and thin mouth, but as soon as she begins talking, all the beauty goes down the drain. More specifically, I want to pull my hair out.
She still talks with a slight southern accent which is very hard for me to understand at times because I've never heard it in my life. My accent isn't any easier for her to understand, but while I try to listen closely and not ask her to repeat often, she doesn't care about kind gestures and often asks me to repeat what I'm saying.
Since I've come here and people have told me that I'm barely understandable, I've tried to put on a bit of an American accent, trying to mimic their rude way of speaking and their lingo, but I can't always hide my natural accent. I don't know some words in English either. I always imagined that there would be more French speaking people in New York as I heard that there would be all kinds of people here, but I've yet to meet any. In the meantime, I stuck with the insufferable woman who insists on telling me about things I don't care about.
"He's got the disease everyone's talking about. You know..." she gestures to her gut, "down there."
"Oh," I say, swallowing the overly sweet tea. "I'm sorry to hear about that. I hope he recovers soon."
"Yeah, I doubt he will. It's just awful. It's terrible." Alexandra's eyes shine as they do whenever her evil mind thinks of something wicked to say or hear. "Maybe this vacation will be a perfect time to check if your husband is suffering too."
I choke on my tea and cough quickly, patting my chest. "Excuse me?" I demand.
She tucks her black hair back and shrugs innocently. "Aren't you curious? Maybe that's the reason he hasn't been sleeping with you." She catches the expression on my face. "Oh, Annaliese, I didn't mean to offend you!"
"Harry does not have... that!"
Alexandra hides behind her tea, blinking. "How do you know?"
"He just doesn't! Besides, you can tell from the symptoms!" And he'd tell me.
I stand up and put my tea down, grabbing my bag. Anger is coursing through me like a river. I'm not angry at the possibility of Harry being ill, but the nerve of her to disregard any respectful boundaries and reach into my life without a second thought. "My God. Thank you for the tea, but I must leave now. I...I have to pack."
She jumps up too. "Oh, I'm terribly sorry! You know I didn't mean to be rude!"
I ignore her, quickly walking away before I feel the need to physically maim her. I open the door, step out, and slam it behind me.
I hear her voice calling my name, but I need to remove myself from the situation. I've always had a bit of a temper when I was younger. Seems like it never went away. It's something Harry's always laughed about.
Back at home, Harry's cleaning the rice, straining it as he holds it under an open faucet. There is a boiling pot of water on the stove and he looks up at me when I stomp in, caught off guard. The expression on his face tells me I've frightened him with my loud noises. He looks out the window at Alexandra standing outside her porch with a frown on her face.
"Everything okay?" he asks uneasily. "What did you do to her?" He puts the strainer down. "Annaliese, don't tell me you hit her."
I shake my head, forcing my steps to be lighter. He rinses the rice one more time. "I didn't, but I swear one of these days I will."
"Oh, God."
"Harry," I say, reaching out to touch his sleeve. I immediately pull back before I touch the material of his shirt. "Sorry. Can I ask you something?"
"Sure." He wearily looks at my hand.
Harry slowly pushes the washed rice into the boiling water and then gives me his attention.
I'm not really about to ask him this, right? He waits for me to say something.
"Nothing," I dismiss, looking away embarrassed. Opening a drawer, I remove a wooden spoon and hold it out. "It's nothing. Here."
He takes it from me and confusedly begins stirring the rice. "Did Alexandra say something to you?"
"Yes and I got out of there before I punched her face in. It was a close call this time."
"Oh," he says, slightly amused. "That's quite like you. Did you get the directions?"
"I did." I produce the paper from my pocket and hold it out for him. He opens it and glances over it quickly while stirring.
"Well, that's simple, I'd say. Are you sure everything is alright?"
I nod, swallowing hard. "Yes. We should do laundry before we go and then pack."
"Okay," Harry says, looking away. The tension returns between us and it's so intense, I need to remove myself from this conversation immediately.
"I'll see you at dinner then."
Harry nods and quietly answers, "Bye."
I walk around him, half waiting for him to call me back. He doesn't.

Lets talk numerology
As episode 11 will be rescheduled to next week (and while this is quite a bummer), it also gave me a chance to delve deeper into the numbers (+ combinations) present on the plates of the car of No. 3 and KMC.
Its really fascinating and fitting (personality wise) what I found out after a long and deep dive into all of it.
Here we go
Meaning of the numbers
The history/mythology behind each of them (note: I cannot include each mythology or can expand on them)
Korean numerology meaning of the numbers
Interesting fact about KSJs house number (177)
Number plate of the parcel driver
Lets dive into the topic!
Lets start with the number combinations present on the plate of No.3's car
31.
Also called an angel number, 31 represents new beginnings, fresh opportunities, creativity, positivity, motivation and progress. It helps to let go of old habits, to move forwards.
When this number appears in someones life, the angels are telling them that new beginnings are on the way. They want people to trust themselves and the universe to make the necessary changes to achieve their goals.
It also signifies the need for open communication, honest and trust (especially with a partner)
67.
Yet another angel number, 67 exist to represent spiritual awakening, fulfilling purpose and shows the "right path"
It is also associated with new beginnings, fresh starts and new opportunities. If someone is looking for a change in their life, the number 67 may be a sign that they should make some changes. (It is a powerful combination of 6 and 7, more on these numbers later)
In the bible, 67 has a significant meaning as well, It appears on multiple occasions:
1. The Apostle Paul conducts his final and fifth missionary journey between 63 to 67 A.D. His journey begins in Rome after the Roman Empire acquits him of the charges against him and he is freed. He then sails to Crete and travels to Nicopolis where he will write the books of 1. Timothy and Titus. In 67 A.D., while in prison, Paul writes his final and fourteenth book called 2. Timothy. It is a heartfelt letter to his best friend and fellow evangelist Timothy. It offered both encouragement and a warning that his martyrdom was fast approaching. »But as for you, be vigilant in all things, endure hardships, do the work of an evangelist; fully carry out your ministry. For I (Paul) am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight; I have finished the course; I have kept the faith (2Timothy 4:5 - 7)« 67 A.D. will prove to be the last full year of Paul's life. Nero, who had recently begun the first state sponsored persecution of Christians, shows no mercy to Paul the Roman citizen. He condemns him to death by beheading in 68 A.D. just before he himself commits suicide on June 9.
2. The twelve Minor Prophets (Amos, Habakkuk, Haggai, Hosea, Joel, Jonah, Malachi, Micah, Nahum, Obadiah, Zechariah, and Zephaniah) have a total number of 67 chapters.
3. Psalm 67, credited to King David, is a song praising God that expresses his desire that the whole world come to understand the salvation the Eternal offers to all humans. »May God be gracious to us, and bless us, and cause His face to shine upon us. Selah. So that Your way may be known on earth, Your salvation among all nations . . . Let the people praise You, O God; let all the people praise You (verses 1 - 2, 5).«
90.
Here we have yet another angel number. This time, it helps to manifestin dreams, signifies positive energy and development and just like 67, its to be associated with enlightenment and spiritual awakening. It also symbolizes the imminent endings and terminations of some events in ones life.
3.
In numerology, a 3 is associated with harmoney, wisdom, understanding, joy, abundance, success and good fortune. It is also associated with Jupiter (both the god and the planet)
It also appears in the bible on multiple occasions:
1. Number 3 is mentioned 467 times in God's word. It derives its symbolism from the fact that it is the first of four spiritually perfect numerals (the others being 7, 10 and 12). The 3 righteous patriarchs before the flood were Abel, Enoch and Noah. After the deluge, there was the three righteous "fathers" of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 2. Jesus prayed three times in the Garden of Gethsemane before His arrest. He was placed on the cross at the 3rd hour of the day (9 a.m.) and died at the 9th hour. There were 3 hours of darkness that covered the land while Jesus was suffering on the cross from the 6th hour to the 9th hour. Christ was dead for three full days and nights. 3. In Christianity, there exists the "threefold office" which states that Christ performs the functions of prophet, priest, and king.
In Norse Mythology it also holds significance
1. Prior to Ragnarök, there will be three hard winters without an intervening summer. These winters are called "Fimbulwinter" (meaning awful, migthy winter in old norse)- these winters mean no summer in between, but filled with snow, bitter frost and icy storms. (There is speculation that climate change, which began in Scandinavia at the end of the Nordic Bronze Age, gave rise to the legend of the Fimbulwinter.) 2. Odin endured three hardships upon the World Tree in his quest for the runes: he hanged himself, wounded himself with a spear, and suffered from hunger and thirst. 3. Bor had three sons: Odin (father god in norse mythology associated with wisdom, healing, death, royalty, the gallows, knowledge, war, battle, victory, sorcery, poetry, frenzy, and the runic alphabet), Vili and Vé. All three sons are the creators of the world.
In greek mythology it too makes its appearance through the 3 sons of Cronos (god of time)
1. Zeus (god of sky and thunder) known for: turning his first wife into a fly which he then ate, cursing Sisyphus to push a giant boulder up a hill forever, chaining prometheus to a rock so an eagle could eat his liver, consistently being unfaithful to his wife (Hera), confining Tantalus in the underworld out of pure reach of nourishment, turning into a cloud to seduce Io, tricking Pandora into opening the box and ultimately turning herself into the burden of humanity, wiping out humankind, binding Ixion to an eternally burning wheel, forcing Atlas to hold the world on his shoulders, raping Callisto (whom he then turned into a bear) as well as Antiope and Alcmene (and many other female gods) 2. Poseidon (god of sea, storms, earthquakes and horses) known for: fighting in the troja war where he created such a huge earthquake it nearly destroyed the underworld, raping Athena and Demeter (and many more) 3. Hades (god of the underworld and the dead) known for kidnapping Persephone and tricking her into marrying him
(The roman equivalents are Saturn, Jupiter, Neptun and Pluto)
Other religions also reference the number 3
The Wiccan Rule of Three. The Triple Goddess: Maiden, Mother, Crone (the three fates) The Slavic god Triglav has three heads. There were three primary gods in Babylonia mythology (Anu, Bel, Ea) Three aspects to the Egyptian sun god (Khepri, Re, Atum)
And it represents the male principles
The number 3 is a very mystical and spiritual number featured in many folktales (three wishes, three guesses, three little pigs, three bears, three billy goats gruff). Plato saw 3 as being symbolic of the triangle, the simplest spatial shape, and considered the world to have been built from triangles.
In German folklore a paper triangle with a cross in each corner and a prayer in the middle was thought to act as protection against gout, as well as protecting a cradle from witches.
Three black animals were often sacrificed when attempting to conjure up demons. On the other hand, a three-coloured cat was a protective spirit. In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth (1606–07) there are three witches, and their spell begins, “Thrice the brindled cat hath mewed,” reflecting such superstitions.
Also, 3 is the dimension of the smallest magic square in which every row, column, and diagonal sums to 15
We continue with the number combination on the plate of KMC's car
21.
Again, another angel number. It signifies good luck and faith.
21 means to enter a time of abundance. For those who have been dealing with a time of transition or facing difficulties, seeing this number can be a positive sign that soon this period will be behind you, and you can take the lessons of the past and put them to good use in your bright and beautiful future. This number has a special meaning - one connected to comfort, protection, and positive energy, helping you enter the next chapter of your life path.
In the bible, 21 is present as well
1. It represents great wickedness of rebellion and sin. After the people left Egyptian bondage, they had twenty-one major rebellious events as they wandered the wilderness. 2. The book of Judges and the gospel of John contain 21 chapter 3. The book of Hebrews contains materials from twetnty-one Old Testament books 4. In 2. Timothy the apostel Paul writes of 21 sins which show the exceeding wickedness of self and sin. He begins chapter 3 with a warning; "But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will…" he then proceeds to list the sind humans will indulge in: 1) selfishly love themselves 2) Love money 3) Bragging 4) Be proud of themselves 5) Blaspheme 6) Disregard and disobe their parents 7) Not be thankful for what they have 8) Reject being holy 9) Will not have natural affection 10) Will be uncompromising 11) Falsely accuse others 12) Lack of any self-control 13) Will be fierce 14) Hate anyone who does good 15) Betray others 16) Will act hardheaded 17) Will have exalted, selfish views 18) Lovers of pleasure 19) Reject loving god 20) Will seem superficially to be godly 21) Deny God's power
0.
The number of nothingness. freedom and no limitations. It is also often referred to as the void, as it represents potential and choice. It most likely means that positive change is on the way
In Chinse numerology on the other hand it takes on a quite positive meaning (beginning of all things (and is generally considered a good number, because it sounds like 良 (pinyin: liáng), which means 'good'.
9.
The number of completion, although not a final ending. 9 means "near the final destination", and represents fulfillment of one cycle so you can prelare to initiate the next one as well as ebb and flow.
Again, another important number in the bible
It represents the fruits of God's Holy Spirit. These fruits are faithfulness, gentleness, goodness, joy, kindness, long suffering, love, peace and self-control
And it also appears in Norse Mythology
1. The universe is divided into nine worlds which are all connected by the world tree "Yggdrasil". 2. The number is also associated with Odin, as that is how many days he hung from the world tree Yggdrasil before attaining knowledge of the runes » Odin's self-sacrifice: But he wanted to know everything and gain wisdom and knowledge of things hidden from him (runes). This was a desire that drove him to sacrifice himself. He sacrificed his eye in Mimir's well and he threw himself on his spear Gungnir in a kind of symbolic, ritual suicide.«
As well as in Greek Mythology
1. There exist nine Muses in Greek mythology named: - Calliope (epic poetry) - Clio (history) - Erato (erotic poetry) - Euterpe (lyric poetry) - Melpomene (tragedy) - Polyhymnia (song) - Terpsichore (dance) - Thalia (comedy) - Urania (astronomy). 2. The River Styx, across which souls were ferried to the underworld, is described as having nine twists. 3. It takes nine days (for an anvil) to fall from heaven to earth, and nine more to fall from earth to Tartarus (place of punishment in the underworld) 4. Leto (goddess of motherhood and protectress of the young) labored for nine days and nine nights for Apollo, according to the Homeric Hymn to Delian Apollo.
The number 9 also often represents pain or sadness. The 16th-century Catholic theologian Peter Bungus pointed out that the Ninth Psalm predicts the coming of the Antichrist. In Islamic cosmology the universe is made from nine spheres—the traditional eight of Ptolemy, plus a ninth added by the Arab astronomer Thābit ibn Qurrah about 900 CE to explain the precession of the equinoxes.
In Anglo-Saxon cultures 9 crops up frequently. The early inhabitants of Wales used nine steps to measure distance in legal contexts; for example, a dog that has bitten someone can be killed if it is nine steps away from its owner’s house, and nine people assaulting one constituted a genuine attack.
In German law the ownership of land terminated after the ninth generation. Many folk sayings involve the number 9. A stitch in time saves nine. Cloud nine is the ultimate in happiness. A cat has nine lives.
76.
And of course, yet another angel number and associated with luck, success, wealth, clarity, thought, love and creativity. The number also shows to focus your attention on your goals and continue to work hard to achieve them. It is a powerful combination of the number 6 and 7 (more on these numbers below)
2.
In numerology, the number represents teamwork, service, love, friendship, patience, personal growth, learning, emotional balance, partnership, acceptance, peace, bonding and mutual interests.
It again shows up in Christianity as an important number as it represent Adam (the failure, sinner and destructor) and Jesus (the sucess), Lilith (Adams first wife) and Eva (Adams second wife)
The number 2 symbolizes many of the basic dualities: me/you, male/female, yes/no, alive/dead, left/right, yin/yang, and so on. Dualities are common in human approaches to the world, probably because of our preference for two-valued logic—yet another duality, true/false. Although 2 was female to the Pythagoreans (Members of a religious-philosophical and politically active school, the Pythagoras of Samos in the 20s of the 6th century BC), other numerological schemes viewed it as male.
In Agrippa von Nettesheim’s De occulta philosophia (1533; “On the Philosophy of the Occult”), 2 is the symbol for man, sex, and evil. One reason that some have associated 2 with evil is that the biblical book of Genesis does not use the formula “and it was good” when referring to the second day of Creation.
Some religions are dualistic, with two gods in place of the one God of monotheism. Examples include Zoroastrianism, where Ahura Mazdā (the god of light and goodness) battles with Ahriman (the god of darkness and evil).
The number 2 is often associated with negatives, as in the words duplicity and two-faced. Northwest Coast Indians required the parents of twins to observe various taboos because they believed that supernatural powers would bring the wishes of twins to fruition.
It is also symbolic of the female principles
This part will include number 1, 6 and 7
1.
This number represents confidence, movement, newness, creation, birth of all things, origin of the universe, opportunity, to turn circumstances into anything we wish, control of future, independence, goal oriented, innovative, forceful, risky, doubtful, power and action in numerology.
Not surprisingly, the number 1 is generally treated as a symbol of unity.
The Pythagoreans did not consider 1 to be a number at all because number means plurality and 1 is singular. However, they considered it to be the source of all numbers because adding many 1s together can create any other (positive whole) number. In their system, where odd numbers were male and even numbers female, the number 1 was neither; instead, it changed each to the other. If 1 is added to an even number, it becomes odd; similarly, if 1 is added to an odd number, it becomes even.
In the faiths of Islamic, Jewish and Christian cultures the number 1 is associated with the unity of God. For medieval alchemists and metaphysicians the number was associated with the Philosopher's Stone, the unknown catalyst that was thought to transform base metals magically into gold.
The number 1 is also associated with the following deities:
Aphrodite, the Greek Goddess of Love
Apollo, the Greek God of Beauty and Truth
Diana, the Roman Goddess of the Hunt
Vesta, the Roman Hearth Goddess
Freya, the Norse Goddess of Fertility
Pangu, the Chinese God who seperated earth and heaven
The number 1 is associated with the colors red, crimson, scarlet and cherry. Gemstones associated with the number 1 are ruby and garnet. Flowers associated with the number are red roses and red carnations.
Common superstitions about the number one are:

A one-eyed person is a witch.
Seeing one magpie bodes a death in your future.

If you wash your hair on the first day of the month you will have a short life.
It is unlucky to get married August 1st or January 1st.
6.
The number of domestic happiness, stability, harmony and blessing.
In Christianity, it holds a significance
1. It appears as the number of six days of Creation in Genesis, with God resting on the seventh day. The structure of the Creation parallels the sum 1 + 2 + 3: on day 1 light is created; on days 2 and 3 heaven and earth appear; finally, on days 4, 5, and 6 all living creatures are created. 2. The number 6 and its meaning are related to man and human weakness, the evils of the devil and the manifestation of sin. Man was created on day six of creation week. Men are appointed 6 days to labor and then they are commanded to rest on the seventh day (Friday sunset to Saturday sunset). 3. A Hebrew slave had to serve 6 years before he could be released in the 7th year. Six years were appointed for the land to be sown and harvested. The number is also associated with Satan in his temptation of Jesus 4. The bringing together of triple six is the mark of the end time Beast power of Revelation. As such, it represents the very best system of governance that mankind can produce without God and under the constant influence of his chief adversary.
In Greek Mythology, number 6 represents
The goddess Venus (Goddess of love)
Hermes (God of Commerce)
Athena (Goddess of wisdom)
In Roman Mythology it represents Bacchus (God of Winemaking and Fertility
Some common supersitions about the number 6 are:

It is unlucky to get married on October 6th or November 6th
7.
In numerology, this number is associated with war, protection, eternal life and pefection
The number 7 is equally sacred amongst Islamic, Christian and Jewish religions. According to Jewish and Christian mythologies it took six days to create the world with the seventh day being the holiest day - a day of rest. The Bible, Zohar and other religious texts also recommend that fields were to be left fallow every seventh year as means of allowing the earth to regenerate itself. Some Christians believe the number 7 represents the seven levels of hell.
It is Hebrew tradition to mourn, or sit Shivah, for a period of 7 days.
Deities associated with the number 7 include Frigga (Norse goddess of marriage, life, motherhood and heaven) Minerva (the Roman Goddess of Intelligence and Wisdom) and Mithras (Sun God in Zoroastrian lore)
The number 7 is associated with the colors violet, purple and plum. 7's gemstone is amethyst.
Flowers associated with 7 are irises and deep purple roses.
Some common superstitions about the number 7 are:
If your date of birth can be reduced to a single number that can be divided by seven then you will have a particularly lucky life.
Shattering a mirror brings 7 years of bad luck.
If you sing before 7 am then you will cry before 11 am.
Wrapping her husband's belt 7 times around a tree causes a woman to become fertile. The seventh child of a seventh child is said to have psychic powers.
If you wash your hair on the 7th day of the month you will have trouble with the law.
It is unlucky to get married April 7th or December 7th.
If you dream about the number 7, you will soon meet a soul mate.
Interesting thing about number 321
It represents creativity, joy, harmony, balance and moving forward
Korean supersititions on number 3:
This number also occurs several times in Korean mythology.
One of the key figures in Korean mythology is Hwanung. When Hwanung descended from heaven to earth, he had three seals and was accompanied by 3,000 followers. Also, Hwanung owned three powers: wind, rain, and clouds. Furthermore, according to the myth explaining how the first human appeared on Korean land, a bear stayed in the cave for three weeks. After that time, Hwanung transformed the bear into a beautiful woman.
Korean superstitions on number 9:
Apart from “4”, people in Korea are wary of “9”. When people reach an age ending in 9, for example, 29, 39, and so on, some of them begin to worry. They believe that this particular year will be difficult and misfortunes or failures may occur.
This attitude towards the number is due to the fact that after 9 comes 0. As a result, it is interpreted as the end of the old, and new beginnings from scratch which many people have anxiety about. There is a risk of choosing the wrong path at such an important time, some may even postpone significant events, such as weddings, to a later date.
Interesting fact about KSJs house number (177)
Seeing angel number 77 indicates divine support, and spiritual growth, and calls for a time of self-discovery and freedom.

Seeing 77 meany to take risks, listen to the inner self and to follow dreams
While the number 77 rarely occurs in the Bible, far more common is the appearance of double 7's, some of which have a special meaning.
Noah wanted to determine the status of the water after the great flood. He sent out a raven and later a dove from the ark (Genesis 8:7 - 8). The dove returned without any symbol of life. Seven days later, he resent the dove. This time it returned with an olive leaf, proving that the waters had almost completely subsided although the ground was likely still water logged. He waited yet another seven days (double 7 or 77) and sent the dove yet again. This time, it did not return, which meant that the ground was dry enough for many kinds of animals.«
In mythology, number 77 is oftentimes symbolic of destruction (gilgamesh epos, which is similar to the noahs ark story)
Moreover, it indicates a time of inner reflection and self-discovery
177
An angle number and a powerful reminder that when we stay true to ourselves, use our creativity, and trust our intuition, anything is possible. It's a sign that we are on the right path and have the courage to pursue our passions and make positive changes in our lives.
It serves as reminder that it is up to us to go after what we want in life. We may be feeling scared, or like we are not good enough.
It will often show up when the reason we arent acting is fear and doubt. Perhaps we fear failure, or doubt that we truly have the ability to achieve something. It could even be that we don’t really think we deserve the things that we want- tells us that these are just symptoms of low self-esteem, and that we need to work on loving ourselves.
It also points to our intuition, and its power to help guide us through life. It is also our intuition that will let us know whether seeing the number 177 is a sign from the Angels.
The number is also always a call to action. It will often show up when we are in a state of indecision or fear which is stopping us from doing the things that we need to do. The number often shows up to help us overcome our fear of moving forward.
The same nudge that causes us to notice the number will prick our intuition and let us know that there is something special about this number.
It serves as a reminder that even when we are doing nothing, we are not standing still, as everything around us is moving, changing our relative position. This means that the main difference between action and inaction, is that when we act, we choose our destination, while when we stay in one place, our destination is chosen for us by other forces.

Fourth wing thoughts
1. Violet says her dads heart gave out right after Brennan “died” - was Brennan responsible for keeping him alive?
2. Why were violets mom and dad together in the first place? (Seem pretty opposite)
3. Do the commanders inside the wards have some kind of alliance with the venin to take out the griffon ppl
4. Fewer dragons willing to bond - because Navvare leadership is becoming corrupt and the dragons don’t like ?
5. What really happened with Brennan and Naolin? And does Tarin know Brennan and by extension knew violet before all of this
6. IS NAOLIN ALIVE AND NOW A VENIN BECAUSE HE REALIZED HE COULD BE MORE POWERFUL THAN AS A RIDER (I,e violet mentions being able to resurrect makes you a god) maybe the reason Tarim hasn’t bonded with anyone since Naolin is because he doesn’t want another power hungry rider but violets willingness to protect the weak and compassion ensures him she won’t be like that and that’s why he chose to bond again- Naolin wanted her moms favor aka power and his power is similar to how the venin work- also they mentioned a venin teacher so it would make sense that
7. What is the deal with the silver hair of the sorrengails - is it related to vi’s weak body - does it have to do with venin like power
8. Violets mom isn’t as bad as we think maybe working with the rebels in some manner
9. Did Brennan tell Xaden stories of violet?
10. Xaden is an intrinnic. Violets head always prickles. Tarin tells him not to read him.
11. Imogen has erased some of Violets memories I.e montserrat
*** what are dragons said to respect, ruthlessness strength - it would make sense as one of the most powerful dragons in existence Tairn would bond with someone who fits those qualities. Which leads me to believe His first rider Naolin was powerful, strong, cunning, perhaps a bit power hungry.
Naolin: we know his power is syphoning. He has the ability to absorb power from “other dragons other riders and then use it or distribute it” this is eerily similar to the way venin operate. They take power from the land instead of from the sky so it stands to believe that if he was that powerful and had a really good grip on his skill set which I’m assuming he did then he fundamentally already understands HOW to draw power like a venin
- when violet is talking to professer about how tried to Naolin save Brennan violet asks why someone would do that professor says people Fear her mother but also want her favor aka power. It would stand to believe that anyone who saved General Sorrengails favorite child would of course be granted her favor and more power in their hierarchy.
- Also when she’s talking to the professor about Naolin Violet mentions that being able to resurrect would make someone a god I.e the most powerful thing in existence
- When violet goes through her book of fables from her father there is mentioned that the bond between a dragon and a rider can turn against the rider if they try to pull too much power
- “A dragon without its rider is a tragedy. A rider without a dragon is dead.” - I’ve been thinking about this quite a lot. We’ve seen how a rider will die without their dragon (RIP Liam 🥲) but generally a dragon whose rider has been killed in this story is fine and eventually rebonds. The only mention of a dragon not bonding again is Tairn and that’s said because “the bond between Tairn and his last rider was so strong” but as we’ve found out the understanding of why dragons bond is not very well understood and I wonder if that’s just another speculative as to why tairn never bonded
- The venin students knows about all the power violet has as tairns rider
- My thoughts are, not to say Brennan couldn’t have been important to Naolin, but I think Naolin’s main goal is power. He wanted to save Brennan to prove he could be a god and was the most powerful rider. He wanted to move up in rank by impressing their mom. Whatever
- I think when he tried to save Brennan he was drawing so much power that A. The bond with Tairn tried to turn against him
- B. It nearly killed Tairn or he was taking all of Tairns power and almost drained him similar to how feather tails can gift their power and if the rider uses too much it will kill them
- I think however that all went down the bond between Naolin and Tairn broke and Naolin realized he could draw from the earth as a venin and be more powerful since he already knows the rope. Unlike with the dragons there are no constraints to his power.
- This also would explain as to why Tairn wouldn’t bond again until violet- because what do we know violet isn’t the typical rider she’s considered weak and fragile in the physical sense but we see plenty of people tell her how she’s smarter than her siblings and how that is not the only weapon there is. I think Tairn chose her because she’s strong but in a different way and is willing to defend the weak but also she’s willing to die for them too. If what happened with Breanna almost killed Naolin but he didn’t want to die if makes sense Tairn would respect someone who It makes sense tairn wouldn’t want the normal rider type after all that happens with Naolin. Also why Andarna would bond her too. They know Violet isn’t power hungry and won’t abuse power and she’s proven it time and again
#just posting my og fourth wing note somewhere to have the time stamp before iron flame#fourth wing thoughts#weee can’t wait to see what happens#y’all no one is supposed to read these they’re for my own enjoyment to see what I got right

bunnyguard reflection
in the spirit of 'fuckit it's my own blog i can be sappy if i want to' as well as 'this took a year and 78k and i get to keep talking about it for at least one more day' now and here is the time and place for personal yap that did not go in the last author's note.
preliminarily speaking, i had this concept in mind before I'd finished either the usagi yojimbo comics OR watching Rise. i spent so much of both of those series fishing out little moments and choices by leo and usagi that made me go 'oh my god i NEED these guys to meet, i need to watch them bounce off each other.' I kept collecting snips of ideas, and dialogue, and encounters that never quite all panned out or fit together because this was just so much fun for me to play in. I had a lot of wanting to turn this into a real story but no concrete frame to build it on, and then in january i saw the year of the otp prompts go by. and went 'oh haha that looks fun.' it was even the year of the rabbit. and then i went 'oh!! what if i did VIGNETTES for these!!' and then less than three days later the Battle Nexus as political element of the Hidden City, complete with connections to the very different other iteration of it that we'd seen, fell into place and suddenly this silly little whim was an actual big project staring me down with an ambitious goal in mind, and I had no idea if I could pull it off.
structuring it as a month by month thing was something i'd never done before. it forced me to wait to find out what would happen, to keep building to something that didn't exist yet, to lay down the track while I was driving the train. and at the same time, it gave me space to grow, to practice putting together a beginning, middle, and end every month. and it gave me something to look forward to, and the excitement of dropping in threads that wouldn't pay off for months, and watching as it went to see what the audience reaction would be. were people getting out of it the things i wanted to give them? was i hitting the notes i wanted? i had the sketch of the year, but i was still learning what was going to happen until the moment the last word hit the page. plot and character choices, but also big thematic stuff! i described November's fic as 'the ten of swords' to Space and then went 'wait a fucking second' and realized that I could draw a connection, in order, between each fic and a numerical card of tarot's suit of swords. (mostly one-to-one --october straddles 9-10, and December loops us back around to the Ace of swords, for new beginnings.) i couldn't have done that on purpose. if i'd had that thought in january i would have gone 'no that's too pretentious and too hard' and avoided it.
also!! this has been a year of my life!! over the course of this series, i've had four different living situations (that lasted longer than a week), two different jobs, and gone back to school. i had to change meds, which was an anxious ordeal in 'am i even going to be able to focus on anything now?' the cat that was purring on my lap while i worked on the first few months has now passed away. this fic kept me company on the flight for my move to a different continent. it kept me sane in the middle of a very stressful summer. it's helped me meet and get closer to some really cool people. i can FEEL how it's made me a stronger writer.
and on top of all that: i am deeply, genuinely, truly proud of this series. i'm glad i wrote it. i'm amazed at how it's turned out. i can see things i would change if i did it over, but i'm glad i won't be. i'm glad this is the way it exists. and i am utterly blown away that there are people who told me they were looking forward to it every month, that they've been following it since the beginning, that they like what i've done with this place. this is the longest-term project i've ever done. it's the most words i've ever put into a single narrative. i can't believe it's never going on my wip rotation again. whadda hell.
i have no idea if i'll ever do anything like this again. i hope it won't be anytime soon--there are other things i want to do in the meantime. but god, am i glad i did it.

Chapter 12 of Gideon the Ninth
So, knife-face and his four-fingered nephew are the Eighth House, although they still do not have names, and we meet the Sixth House in this chapter. Gideon says she has met "nearly all" of the rest of them at the beginning of the chapter, which presumably includes everyone except the Sixth House. Since the Sixth House is described as wearing grey, I wonder if they are the "greyer House" that Harrow was worried about back in Chapter 6. The only other ones that would seem to fit that descriptor would be the Eighth House. This chapter also has the Sixth House skull on it, I notice.
Actually, let's go back and look at the skulls for Act 2, since I haven't been noticing them:
Chapter 9, which introduced Corona, Ianthe, and Naberius, has the third skull, makes sense
Chapter 10, where Dulcinea nearly seduces Gideon into telling all of her secrets, has the seventh
And Chapter 11, which has the cavalier matches, has the first skull, I guess because none of the houses is especially prominent here
Gideon is spending entirely too much time with Dulcinea, I'm still waiting for Dulcinea to turn out to be evil, and of course she reads romance novels, she sticks out like such a sore thumb from every other character in this book. I would like to know what she is having Protesilaus do for her, and what he was doing for her back in Chapter 10
So, this is sort of coming together for me? If I understand this correctly, thanergy is necromantic power, and is generated by people dying. So from this, it looks like the purpose of the Cohort/military (maybe the main purpose, or only purpose, or possibly just a side benefit?) is to go kill lots of people in order to generate thanergy for the necromancers, who are the ruling class. Do I have that approximately right?
I did actually see the tumblr post about this earlier, but did not expect to see this so early in this book. Gideon, this is not how people usually think about people they hate
Crosses? Is this religion then a scion of Christianity somehow, or do the crosses mean something else? I'm not sure what this signifies
Just black romance things
Palamedes and Camilla seem to be... dating the age of the building when Gideon finds them. Is this a power necromancers have, or are they doing the kind of old-fashioned mundane dating that actual archaeologists do, which is in fact something that we can do pretty well? This doesn't seem like something that actually requires necromancy, but Gideon does seem to think this involves necromancy, or possibly she just thinks that all nerds are necessarily necromancers
Harrow said back in Chapter 5 that the other Houses didn't even know her name when they sent messages asking her if she was coming to First House, I assume that includes her last name. But Palamedes knows her last name here. I don't think it's making too much of an unwarranted assumption to guess that Harrow has been keeping to herself and not talking to anyone so far, so that's pretty interesting. I thought I remembered Teacher knowing Harrow's name and greeting her by her full name when she got off the shuttle, but looking back, it looks like he initially just greets her as "Lady of the Ninth House" and doesn't address her by name until Harrow introduces herself with her full name, which does imply that he didn't know it before. So why does Palamedes know it? I guess he could have asked Teacher about it, but that would also be a little odd
Also, after Camilla attacks Gideon, Palamedes gets her to quit, and then says "it's the other one" presumably meaning that it's Gideon and not Harrow. Does this mean Palamedes thinks there's some reasonable reason for Camilla to attack Harrow? That theory doesn't really fit with the rest of this chapter, where Palamedes and Camilla actively help Gideon rescue Harrow, but I'm keeping it in mind for the future
Also wondering how Palamedes saw some blood and just knew that it was Harrow's blood, although actually, I can see that being a necromancer power so I'm not going to question it too much. Also wondering what non-intravenous blood is
I think this is the first time Gideon has spoken to anyone since Act 1?
I'm guessing the thing that got given to Gideon when they arrived that Harrow promptly stole was the key ring?
Put this on the list of great physical descriptions of people. I went and looked up the history of "resting bitch face" to see how old it was as a phrase, and it looks like it was mentioned in a New York Times article in 2013 and the author guessed it had been around for "at least ten years". There's no actual source for that statement as far as I can tell, and the article is paywalled, but potentially this means that "resting bitch face" has been around for 20 years now, it's got staying power and is not actually a fly-by-night internet meme. It's at least significantly more august than "I studied the blade" (from Chapter 4), which is dated by KnowYourMeme to 2016.
I gather from what Palamedes is saying that some necromancers are good with blood stuff and others are good with bone stuff and Harrow is definitely a Bone Stuff kind of necromancer
Gideon sees something lying on the ground that could be Harrow, and her first instinct is to kick it
Palamedes does something involving sticking himself and Harrow with a wire to diagnose her, but this is apparently not necromancy and is just regular medical science. Alright, I am just as lost as Gideon is, here
I am curious about this bone cocoon that Harrow made, but I do not know what it was for or why Palamedes seems to think it is cool
Love how Harrow came back to the waking world just to object to Palamedes claiming to be the greatest necromancer ever
I like Palamedes so far, and I think he has the best chance of everyone except probably Magnus of not being evil, which seems promising, but there is the thing where he somehow knows Harrow's name and thought Camilla should stop attacking Gideon because she wasn't Harrow to think about
Now that I've said that, I'm sure Palamedes is eventually going to turn out to be evil for the ironies, but for now I am positively disposed towards him

15 people, 15 questions @dummerjan, my dear, thank you for tagging me <3 guess who's scrambling for any drop of ambition or interests that may not even lie within me and (as well actively avoiding and postponing) looking for a job *sweats in indecision and lack of knowledge about anything* ANYWAYS 1) Are you named after anyone? After my grand grandmother.
2) When was the last time you cried? Not exactly sure, might be when I was freaking out about finding a job the first time or the new years eve 'no idea what's happening in my brain but I'm unhappy' slight crying session for no reason.
3) Do you have kids? Nah. Perfectly fine interacting with small kids of other people when I'm not overwhelmed but certainly not planning on having my own. Ever.
4) What sports do you play/have you played? I love table tennis. Also dancing. But anything what is considered 'sport' sport with all the 'I need to have achievements'? Not a fan xD
5) Do you use sarcasm? Usually when I'm feeling bitchy. Sometime I cannot quite control it.
6) What's the first thing you notice about people? Maybe how they look? What kind of mood they're in? Something like that I suppose.
7) What's your eye color? Brown.
8) Scary movies or happy endings? Happy endings. I like my peace and I love my sleep. Get scary movies out of my sight.
9) Any talents? I can make it that spoon hangs from my nose without being attached or held (does it make sense?) I'm bit out of practice but I can sing.
10) Where were you born? In a hospital.
11) What are your hobbies? Right now making fanart, crocheting, sewing and watching bls.
12) Do you have any pets? Had a dog, but she passed away.
13) How tall are you? 168 cm
14) What was your favorite subject in school? English, Arts and crafts and Chemistry.
15) What is your dream job? (what a fitting and hard question for someone who's looking for a a job rn) The problem is that everything interests me but I'm not good in anything. I would say probably illustrating books, being a lighthouse keeper or hobbit gardener.
No pressure tagging <3: @tuuliii @astrarche-x @dragonflavoredcake @theelfmaiden @linka-r9-vysocina @the-vegetation-in-question @fizzyxcustard @saphieve-rosa @icelilyz @ifeelsotiredbuticantsleep @helenepeyrous @allthegoldinerebor @dropthedemiurge @theflagscene @tswizzlesfan

15 people 15 questions!!!!
Tagged by @suzufield thank you yay ^^
This is a long one so it's under the cut and also idgaf I love hearing myself talk I love the sound of my own voice!!!!
Not really, my given name is that of a saint like most names from here tbh, but my mom picked it because it's short and she wanted people from everywhere around the world to be able to say it which is kind of cute. I don't have chosen name I have like 3 nicknames people alternate between, one of them is Ani or AniGC which I use on the internet and I don't plan on picking one I think not having a name is cool!
1. Are you named after anyone?
2. When was the last time you cried?
Nope, too young, and also having my own kids or parenting/fostering is not something I am fit to ever do I don't think I would be a good parent. I'm a lesbian so biological kids are kind of out the window (not really but don't want them regardless, better safe than sorry on this matter I think). I would love to work with kids though at least once in my lifetime.
Genuinely yesterday I love crying I cry all the damn time it helps me fall asleep. What the libs don't want you to know is that depression is actually awesome because you can cry all the fucking time and you don't need sleeping medication! Yay for mental illness!
3. Do you have kids?
4. What sports have you played/do you play?
I did karate for 8 or 9 years from ages of like 6-14, loved it, then I fell down the stairs and fucked up my spine and had to quit. Then I did swimming for a bit but nothing too serious and I quit that because I got bored now I do fuck all.
5. Do you use sarcasm?
Yes a lot but I try to not get too irony poisoned lol, I mostly just say outlandish shit but I do use sarcasm.
6. What's the first thing you notice about people?
I couldn't tell you if you put a gun to my head. I don't fucking know 😭
7. Eye colour?
Brown! ^^
8. Scary movies or happy endings?
This is a strange one I'm not really big on either of these things. When it comes to horror I'm not really a fan of movies I feel like a thing inherently becomes a little less scary when you show it to me or when it's moving you know? Idk I like some of them but I really do enjoy horror books those are awesome. And for the other thing I don't know is it a happy ending for me or the characters? Like I enjoy all plot threads being tied together well but if that doesn't make my fav happy GOOD. Let that bitch suffer. To actually answer the question I think scary movies lmao.
9. Any talents?
Why yes I'm very awesome. Idk I'm a fast learner genuinely that's the biggest thing I've got going on I think almost everything I know I learned on my own accord, it was never given to me, and idk I'm kind of proud of that idgaf if it sounds corny. I can also dislocate my thumb that's kind of cool.
10. Where were you born?
In the hospital (Serbia but I don't like saying where I'm from too much I want to remain a Mysterious Figure On The Computer and now you have to ignore the fact that I frequently post about this)
11. What are your hobbies?
Running the risk of sounding like a loser nerd I love studying I love learning things if I could stay in school for the rest of my life I genuinely would. I love learning how shit works and I'm gonna be honest organic chemistry has been among my favourite things to study ever it's so perfectly logical and awesome one of the best sciences ever for sure. Besides that I like doing fuck all and taking the piss on the internet.
12. Do you have any pets?
Nope! Small apartment and not enough money or time to take care of them. One day I will get a cat though trust.
13. How tall are you?
184cm that's like 6'0" I think?
14. Favourite subject in school?
Idk probably physics. High school level chem was incredibly fucking boring I didn't even have to fart to get good grades. Math and programming were my original beloveds but I fell out of love with them very soon after starting high school due to bad experiences with teachers. So yeah probably physics idk the only subjects I think about at this point are the ones I'll have next year in college I can't fucking wait for atomistics.
15. Dream job?
I feel like a fucking idiot being at my age and telling people I want to be a scientist but like!!!!!! I do I genuinely do!!!! I want to be a researcher and do cool things I want to be entranced by the work I do maybe this sounds so incredibly optimistic because it's likely that if I become a researcher I'll be eating packet noodles for the rest of my life but!! That's my dream!!!
I cannot be assed to tag 15 people I'm sorry also I think everyone and their mom has done this at this point so I'll tag. 3 take it or leave it! Sorry if any of you have done this already 😭. Also if you haven't but don't want to that's fine lmao no pressure

15 people 15 questions
thanks @girlfriendline @giveemgreef @tblueger <333
1. are you named after anyone?
i am not! my middle name was an homage to my mom's grandparents but i have since changed it and my parents are blessedly allergic to otherwise naming anything after anybody
2. when was the last time you cried?
few days before christmas
3. do you have kids?
no and i do not want to. i have one fur baby (that i co-parent with my parents lmao) though as you all well know (scout my baby boy <3)
4. what sports do you play/have you played?
played kids' baseball/softball until i was like 10/11 bc i was constantly in the outfield and nobody can pitch until you get to like. high school. so it was boring and i hated it so i quit. i was on dance team for a while until i had to drop it bc recital dates kept being on the same days as school band concerts. was in marching band throughout high school, which counts bc i was a percussionist and had to lug around those heavy drum harnesses
5. do you use sarcasm?
a ridiculous amount. if we also count like comedic lying in this i accidentally convinced a coworker that there were only three seasons of spongebob doing that whole pretending that only the good parts of a show exist. such a shame spongebob ended after season 3. there's no more of it! just too bad
6. what’s the first thing you notice about people?
hair probably
7. what’s your eye color?
brown! medium tending towards dark
8. scary movies or happy endings?
while i love gothicness and gothyness i am a Known Weenie and certain types of gore literally make me feel faint. like the finale of the terror s1 made me a little faint and gave me the sweats and i had to fully pause the episode and lay on the floor for a while. so i guess categorically happy endings based on that. if a scary movie isn't super gory though i'll go for it
9. any talents?
i’m very performing arts inclined! i play piano, sing, dance, and act (was a theatre major in college). i memorize things quickly if i set my mind to it, am great at navigating, have great pitch memory (like i can be exactly or near-exactly on pitch when singing something i’ve heard before even without backing accompaniment. this unfortunately drives me crazy when people post pitch-shifted versions of songs and i can tell they’re off. bearer of the curse), decent stage combatant, good crowd weaver, and somehow bear the ability to unintentionally come off as intimidating to basically everyone i’ve ever met
10. where were you born?
iowa, usa
11. what are your hobbies?
i'm something of a gamer in my spare time. basically only solo joints though i'm not like gamer nhlers that play like. league of legends or fortnite or counterstrike. i've recently joined a community band and a bar trivia team (with my old middle school choir teacher lmao. he's a homie), i write fic every once in a while, read, dance around the house, go for walks when it's not cold, snuggle my pup, and obviously watch hockey. i keep telling myself i'm going to learn how to sew but trying to find beginner projects for men types is fucking dire and i keep not going out to get fabric for the pirate blouse i keep wanting to make rip
12. do you have any pets?
ah there's a separate question for this. scout, my yellow lab baby boy whose breeder had a confederate flag up in his barn when we got him (we saved you buddy). have some pictures
13. how tall are you?
5'5". short king territory
14. favorite subject in school?
i was a band/choir bitch. probably followed by english (literature). i liked basically all of it but phys ed though fuck that class i hate distance running it gives me a stitch in my side and you have to run a mile at least twice a semester (fuck you presidential fitness test). on top of all the other running they make you do. loved when they just did games though. matball my beloved
15. dream job.
actor, either stage or voice. unfortunately i do not want to live where the big voice acting studios are located and regional stage acting is kind of limited unless you go all the way out to chicago, which i tried for a couple of months before multiple breakdowns told me i should probably be closer to home. i enjoy being a librarian though :)

Twenty Questions for Fic Writers
@starquestingfordrarry ahhh thank you for tagging me, these are such good questions!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
41 +1 unrevealed +6 that ive hidden
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
238,631
3. What fandoms do you write for?
only harry potter atm but i have written other fandoms before and i am psyching myself up to write some pjo/hoo next year
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Best Kept - drarry, secret relationship, EWE, E, 7k
How Does Your Garden Grow - wolfstar, modern au, T, 1.6k (this was the first hp fic i ever wrote back in 2016!)
Sparks - drarry, soulmates au, secret relationship, E, 20k
White in the Darkness - wolfstar, established relationship, possessive!remus, E, 7k
Maybe Love Could Be A Verb - wolfstar, getting together, idiots to lovers, E, 16k (my first fic coming back to fandom last year!)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
not as much as i should... i hate replying to comments when my work is still anon and i swear this year all ive done is anon fests and then i forget to reply when reveals happen and then my inbox gets super full and i get overwhelmed...
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
oooh probably Invisible, Inescapable - ghost!reg, house magic, 16k, M - or Non-Existent Hearts Still Bleed - mostly canon compliant Pansy character study, 8k, M
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
uhhhh most of them? i dont tend to write sad things
8. Do you get hate on fics?
not so far!
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
yes. all of it. mostly queer but i have done some m/f but mostly in triads and that one tomione dead dove. currently in the middle of kinktober so smut is on the brain
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
no theyve never been my vibe
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
no thank god
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
yes! well, someone asked, idk if they actually did it. it was my pansromione choir fic from pride fest
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
back in the day i co-wrote one with my then-best friend - i think it was the first fic i ever uploaded...
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
nope. impossible question. my ogs are wolfstar and drarry, but i also adore pansmione/pansromione, fleurinny, ginsy, jegulus, jegulily... so many ships so little time...
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
i tried to do nano with original fiction several times and none of them really stuck, which im sad about because some of the ideas were banging - lesbian vampires through time, anyone?
16. What are your writing strengths?
ok this is the hardest question by far...
i think i am quite good at the introspection, and characters having to think through their situations, figure out how they actually feel. i blame all the therapy...
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
confidence and run on sentences. i was editing a fic yesterday and found a sentence that was nearly half a page...
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
i dont mind it, but i think it has to fit the story. but one of my pet peeves is when people but dialogue in another language and then put the translation in the chapter notes - i have a goldfish brain and by the time i get to the end of the chapter i have forgotten what the dialogue was about
19. First fandom you wrote for?
kingsman back in like 2014/5
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
dont make me choose between my babies! maybe the one that i cant talk about yet (i feel its the most up to date representation of my writing at the moment), maybe my wolfstar witcher!au (longest uploaded fic, and i really struggled to finish it but im so proud of myself for getting there), maybe my soulmate fest one (i was so not happy with it but everyone seemed to like it and it reminds me that i am my own worst critic)

Fusing Total Drama Characters In Sims 4 (Part 2)
I’m fusing Total Drama characters in Sims 4 using the genetic mechanic.
Why?
I don’t flipping know. Why not?
I’m gonna do EVERY pairing possible. This post is just gonna be however long Tumblr allows for images.
So let’s just get into it.
I’m using my own TD Sims for this. They’re in the Gallery if you want them. As well as all these pairings and sims that get generated. So what you want.
Gwen + Heather
Two queens. This should make two good sims.
I mean I would hope so.
Let’s see what Sims comes up with…
Okay. WOW.
We got two W’s here.
The girl really does look fashionable as Heather, and her pants match Heathers crop top. The shows don’t match though, so it’s a 9/10.
The boy not only got generated with the teal hair, but he got generated with a matching shirt for that teal hair. Actually, his entire outfit matches.
Is he buff? We got a buff kid?
The girls name is Grace. She’s an art lover & a genius.
I love her, actually
The boys name is Nash. He’s adventurous & loves the outdoors.
He sounds perfect for Total Drama.
Gwen + Duncan
You know I have to do this.
I know a lot of people hate this ship.
But we gotta do it.
Let’s see the punk kids and get it over with…
Oh god…
Who are you people?!?!
The boy has Duncan’s exact body type. He inherited the short legs.
(Well, as close to that as you can get with Sims)
But he’s… fine. He might actually be kinda handsome.
The girl is shit. I’m sorry. She looks awful. Nothing matches. She’s wearing a gardening hat. And she’s a dirty blonde. WHERE did you get blonde hair from?!
Are one of these two secretly blonde and I don’t know it?!
The boys name is Ace. He’s a dance machine & paranoid.
Actually, that does sound like a name Gwen & Duncan would put on the table.
The girls name is Fernanda. She’s loyal & a dance machine.
First hilarious thing is that they’re both dance machines. Second is the idea that a Gwen & Duncan offspring has loyal as a trait.
Gwen + Leshawna
Another round of queens.
Let’s see…
Huh…
That is very interesting indeed.
(I changed her outfit for a brief second to see what her hair looked like)
We got the mixed race. The girl is wearing a raincoat and idk why.
But she is actually pretty.
The boy…
“You sir, are one pretentious hipster”
Idk if I’m weirded out or in love with it.
The girls name is Misty. She’s self assured & hates children.
The boys name is Jagger. He’s creative & a slob.
Yep. Definitely a hipster.
Gwen + Geoff
Here’s these two.
Crazy knowing that the original storyboards had them as a couple.
Let’s see what Sims comes up with…
Yeah. What I expected. Especially the boy.
They definitely have personality. I love that the girl got dyed hair. And… she’s buff??? Okay, slay.
The guy looks like Geoff’s kid for sure.
The boys name is Nehemiah. He’s a practice makes perfect & an animal enthusiast.
I think ‘practice makes perfect’ is a newer trait they added. I haven’t actually tried it for any of my sims yet.
The girls name is Constance. She’s a music lover & erratic.
Gorgeous name. And she sounds like a character.
Gwen + Izzy
Here’s my Izzy Sim. First time seeing her.
I headcanoned this one quite a bit. She’s hairy. She’s got marks. She’s buff. And she’s wild.
This is gonna be the last one for today.
This is gonna go either well or horribly.
Let’s see what Sims comes up with…
Okay yep. Disaster XD
I mean, the girl looks okay. I’ll give her that.
The boy is a hot mess. Mismatch all around. And he has TWO nose rings.
Even Duncan didn’t go that far.
The boys name is Ian. He’s materialistic & a child of the islands.
I mean I’ll give him this, he sounds like he’s fit right in to Total Drama.
The girls name is Sydney. She’s outgoing & evil.
And there’s our first evil kid of this game.
There’s our season main villain right there.
Say these generated sims were on a team on a show. What’s their team name?

Bookworm Will Review 2024 (#9 + 10)
Title: 'The City We Became' and 'The World We Make'
Author: N.K. Jemisin
Rating: 4 / 5
Review: (MILD SPOILERS)
I read the first book in the Broken Earth trilogy last year and found it to be such a headscratcher, in a hard-to-follow way. However I've continued to hear great things about Jemisin, so I wanted to give this duology a shot and I was very happy that I did!
The way this world worked was much easier to follow and enjoyable to read while still including Jemisin's metaphorical and fantastical writing style.
The concept alone was a huge undertaking because we have multiple POVs from such a wide cast of characters, each representing an individual aspect of a whole, kind of reminded me of 'Inside Out' but far more realistic. Each individual interacts with the world and this embodiment of an impending multidimensional annihilation really created a well-crafted character-driven story.
I can't speak on how accurately Jemisin represented each borough of New York, but my father is a New Yorker, so I'm hoping he can share some input. Since the setting was an encapsulation of supposedly everyday life, but with metaphysical avatars inhabiting everyday people, there was an abundance of commentary that some may find to be try-hard or check box-y, but I quite enjoyed it. The socioeconomic and political commentary didn't overtake the fantastical aspects either, instead worked in a way that strengthened the takeaway messages. It was relevant. It was relatable. It felt real. It didn't feel like you were reading from a textbook either (which I appreciated lol).
The overarching subplots for each avatar's journey felt so individualized that, even when it came together, still felt unique.
I'm not saying the very real hardships that they faced like racism, homophobia, xenophobia, bigotry, and misogyny ( just to name a few) are fun to read. They were not there for shock value. They had a purpose.
I personally enjoyed book 1 more than book 2 because I felt like we had more time with the cast and the whimsy that was this unseen threat. Book 2 was enjoyable, but I felt like the last few chapters almost felt rushed and the ending became rather abrupt. At the same time, it still kind of fits Jemisin's writing style, not everything will have an obvious build-up until BAM. Then you're like 'Oh....!!!!!'
Overall, I liked this a lot and think this is the place to start if you want to start reading Jemisin's portfolio.
