William made a fist as he finished putting away the last of his slides, deciding it was best to call it night. Cataloguing micro organisms could wait indefinitely for all he cared, it wasn't like Umbrella needed more hands on deck for this sort of menial work. He did give the tedious assignment credit where it was due, for it relieved some of the tension from his earlier spat with Annette.

He slouched in his chair, mind combing over every detail of their fight regarding Sherry. Who was going to take her to school, who was going to ensure she had supper come Friday, who was going to take her clothes shopping, who would stay behind in the labs to get their projects finished...it went on, and on until he could hardly stomach the idea of being around Annette, much less his own child.

His own child.

William glared at the screens running their numbers in front of him.

"No, don't think like that..." He muttered to himself.

Being a professional scientist and a family man wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Once upon a time, he truly thought he could have both worlds--that he could give his finite time and energy to everyone and still come out on top. As Sherry got older though, William realized too little too late that he wasn't cut out for juggling so much. He knew Annette felt the same stress, arguably more than himself. She unfortunately had more to prove to Umbrella, due to dogmatic behavior outside of his control.

Eventually--like all his projects--he'd have to sacrifice some for the sake of the others. Indecision was his kryptonite in the field, and William was slowly figuring out the same weakness plagued his family life as well.

Annette and he had no business bringing a child into this mess.

William snapped out of his thoughts when he heard the security door open. He turned his head, doing a double take as he saw Wesker step inside, spotting a tuxedo and looking more professional than usual. He spun around in his computer chair, and tiredly grinned.

"Where you going all dressed up?"

"Political donor party," Wesker simply replied, adjusting his glasses. "One of Umbrellas many clients."

Birkin scoffed. "Republican or Democrat?"

"Does it matter?" Wesker huffed. "The president is going to be quite cooperative with us no matter which."

"Touché'."

"I heard you had a marital quarrel." Wesker said.

"More like several," William countered with a laugh. "I take it you're here to cheer me up?"

Wesker growled. "Do I look like I get paid to play therapist on top of managing research and running a godforsaken police department?"

"Could've fooled me. I heard everyone in the RPD calls you 'Mom' behind your back. " William's smile grew as he noticed Wesker visibly twitch from the nickname remark. "So why are you here?"

"The higher ups want you and I to work a double this Thursday night. They want to speed up production on the T variants."

"This Thursday?"

"Do you have plans?"

William breathed out his nose, his eyes gazing toward his shoes. He could already hear Annette screaming at him for this.

"Not that it's my business," Wesker cleared his throat, watching William's gaze fall onto him once more. "But perhaps it would be wise to consider vouching for Annette to step down from this division. She could stay home longer with your little, while we hold the fort."

"I couldn't do that to her," As much as she's pissed me off...William thought as he shook his head. "You and I wouldn't have come so far had she not pulled strings."

"Be it as it may, although Annette herself is quite competent, you are the brains behind this lab. If you crash and burn, we all do. If Annette does...well, it's a pity but it wouldn't be enough to rock the boat."

"Don't you have somewhere to be?"

Wesker checked his watch, and he realized the time. Sighing, he ventured back to the door and finished the last of his thoughts.

"Think about it Birkin, for all our sake."

As the security door cracked and shut, William let out a breath while he rubbed his forehead. Wesker was right. Logically, it made sense and would help Sherry in the long run, but he didn't know if he could do it--to throw Annette under the bus. That didn't mean however that the idea was totally lost on him. It all circled back to how he viewed his projects: which ones would he let go, and which ones would he invest in.

He finally had his answer hours later, and made peace with his sins.

I do like thinking about early Heathlock now that I've been shipping with Heathcliff for over a year and a half, and have learned so much about myself.

I project onto Sherry a lot, of course--she's a self insert OC, so that's bound to happen--so I love exploring her relationship with romance ... she has felt romantic attraction once or thrice, but never as strongly as she does after meeting Heathcliff.

And we know from the Sherlock Holmes stories that Sherlock CAN and WILL threaten people's lives if those he loves (i.e., Watson, his closest companion) are injured or potentially killed. So it's very easy to imagine Sherry being upset about Heathcliff dying, even if she knows Dante can bring him back.

Not to mention her lore ... Watson was killed right in front of her. So when Heathcliff (or Ishmael, or Sinclair, or any other Sinner) dies right in front of her, she's reliving that painful experience over again in real time. It doesn't matter if Dante can bring them back--it'll only be a matter of time before Sherry watches them die all over again.

My take on Nate and his relationships with his parents

With Sherri, it’s hinted that she’s never really had a stable relationship, which while I believe has affected Gwen more than Nate, I also feel that it has affected Nate as well.

But I don’t necessarily see that resentment towards Sherri the way Gwen seems to have. I actually feel like he’s pretty close with her, but doesn’t have a kinship like with Brian. But I also believe that her failed relationship with Brian was what affected Nate's view on relationships in general and he doesn’t want to repeat the same patterns as Sherri and wants that forever love.

Speaking of Brian, I definitely believe that Nate idolizes him. Especially with how he talks about him in Summer Storm.

Nate: Ah. Who wants to try some fancy candy? My dad sent me a whole box of cool stuff from Japan. He plays baseball over there. Kind of a big deal.

Gwen: He's the oldest player in the league. He does adult diaper commercials over there.

Nate: I don't get why that's not cool.

But Brian also barely checks in Nate and is there for him, which probably affected Nate's relationship with Nikki. He's scared that she'll leave him behind when she goes off college.

Nate: Nik, I'm kind of freaking out about us. You've been spending time with Trevor...

Nikki: Trevor? Nate, there's nothing between me and Trevor. You know I don't like muscular guys.

Nate: I don't know how I feel about that, but... It's not just him. It's all this other stuff. The SATs, the studying. I'm afraid you're gonna leave me behind.

Nikki: Nate, I'm not going to college to leave you behind. I'm... I'm going to college so I can have a future.

Nate: Am I in that future?

Nikki: Well, the future's not set. There's no fate but what we make for ourselves.

He's scared of being left behind and needs that validation that he won’t be abandoned. So he doesn’t want to think about not having a forever with Nikki. And once again, Nate CRAVES stability since he never had it as a kid. Which is also shown in Kids In America during his talk with Leia:

Nate: My first breakup felt like my heart was getting ripped out of my butt, so...

Leia: And it made it even worse that everyone was agreeing with Jay.

Nate: Not everyone. Look, I was in a tough spot 'cause Jay's my best friend, but I agree with you. You do? Yeah. And then Nikki chimed in talking about living separate lives, and... I got worried I'd get my heart ripped out of my butt again.

And also:

Nate: Yeah. I mean, what's more powerful than love? Maybe lightning. But that's it.

Leia: If two people are meant to be, then they can survive anything.

Nate: Exactly.

Leia: Do you know how lucky it is to find that special person? Someone who you feel comfortable with?

Nate: And someone you can talk to.

Leia: And everything's just easy.

Nate: Right. I mean, someone who just...

Leia: Gets you?

Nate: Yeah.

This also shows Leia’s view on love and relationships but not the point rn.

Nate finds that kinship in Leia and feels validated in his feelings. But also the issue is that even in a different relationship, that feeling won’t magically disappear. It’s up to him to be honest and let go of that fear in order to be happy.

Aki Izayoi/Akiza Izinski (likes the second half of the series): You are pretty chill, and almost definitely a Faithshipper. You’re very fond of doing all kinds of scenarios of their first meeting. You write at least one thing per day appreciating her development. You really, really like the rollerskates episode. Even if it could have been better, you still love Yusei giving her Stardust. You get really sad during the ending, but you know in your heart of hearts that they definitely kissed offscreen.

Aki Izayoi/Akiza Izinski (dislikes the second half of the series): You got the taste of a girl who was straight-up unhinged, and you've been chasing that high ever since. You find bondage jokes incredibly funny. You have at least one very strong opinion about Crow. Despite your feelings on the second half (most of which can be described as "seething"), you have a soft spot for Sherry. Ruka/Luna: Your soul aches every day for her wasted potential. You started reading the manga the moment you saw scans of how it did her. You were very surprised when Ancient Fairy Dragon got banned. You have edited characters to be wearing flower crowns at least once. You’re still not quite sure what to think about her brother, but you definitely wish Life Stream had showed up earlier. You spent eighty episodes waiting for a followup for the end of Ep. 67, and are still waiting.

Carly Nagisa/Carly Carmine: You are a Scoopshipper, with no questions asked. You were utterly horrified when you found out about the cult thing (even if your source may have been somewhat inaccurate). You may not be a Roseknightshipper, but you definitely have an LGBT headcanon. You have mixed feelings about how her arc ended, and would have preferred if the entire season was just her running around kicking stuff.

Martha: You hate every single other parent in every other series because you have seen her episodes and beheld a standard none have yet lived up to. She takes no shit, she's a rain of sunlight in a land of misery, she sacrifices herself tragically. Why the fuck did she barely appear after Dark Signers? You just want to talk to the person who made that decision, you say while loading a shotgun.

Mikage Sagiri/Mina Simington: You may be a Careshipper whose favorite arc is Fortune Cup, or an Ushio/Mikage shipper whose favorite arc is Dark Signers. Either way, you just really, really like office ladies, okay? You either think she's cute, relate to her beleaguered nature, or both. Also, did you know there's no ship name for Ushio/Mikage? I didn't until recently, but you definitely do.

Stephanie: Man, you picked the biggest third wheel in the entire franchise and a woman who only appears in the second half to be your fave, huh? That takes a lot of guts. And to my immense surprise, despite her entire existence being "waitress" and "one-note obsession with Jack Atlas", you have decided your OTP with her is Carly. Rock on, Stephanie fans, you make the world brighter.

Misaki: You decided to go dumpster-diving in the video games and found a gem. You understand that the only thing that could have made Bruno's arc better is if he was also Rei Ayanami. The bit at the end where she finally smiles melted your heart like butter in the sunrise. You insist Watts are underrated. You sadly know deep down that there's a reason the only female Yliaster member is non-canon.

i will say its an interesting choice to take brian irons (a corrupt police chief who takes bribes from corporations and wants to have control over his city and police station, who is also a serial killer and sexual assaulter) and have him tie up, physically beat a 19 year old girl while holding her at gunpoint and kidnap a 12 year old for no apparent reason, when in the original game he didnt give a shit about claire OR sherry (or her pendant) and just wanted power and control over his police station because it was all he had left

June 30, 2013: As he is being transported by a group of J’avo, Jake Muller finds an opportunity to escape Neo Umbrella’s captivity. In the process, he shuts down power to the building, freeing Sherry. The two escape together, and Jake laments his parentage, blaming his genetics for his disposition. Sherry admonishes his defeatist attitude, emphasizing that he can only be defined by the actions he chooses to take. She is able to make contact with the U.S. government, and is given a location to meet Simmons in Lanshiang. They make their way to the rendezvous point, but are soon surrounded by Neo Umbrella’s forces once again. Thankfully, they are rescued by Chris and Piers’ BSAA squad. Though Piers wants to escort them to their destination, Chris insists they resume their pursuit of Ada, single minded in his quest for vengeance. Sherry agrees to part ways with them, having been ordered by Simmons to avoid contact with others.

general chiyo headcanon dump regarding ARR + the post patch. tw for emetophobia mention. mild arr spoilers!

chiyo was resistant to joining the scions at first, especially due to thancred and her fear of men (which presented more as "leave me alone", resenting his persistent efforts to recruit her). he convinced her by having her meet minfilia (who encouraged chiyo to join and explained the echo), but chiyo had lingering "annoyance" (read: a big crush) towards thancred. until he was possessed, at which point she felt awful and repentant, and sincerely apologized for misjudging his character. they have a good relationship after that, depending on verse. with @windcovet's verse, they start dating after he's rescued and are currently still together, though in an open relationship that can be...turbulent, to say the very least. they still argue and can't agree on anything, but when shit gets real, they're there for one another.

during her time as a mercenary, chiyo acted as a shinobi and a bard to kill her marks, but not as a samurai, despite being trained as one as a child. she viewed what she was doing (taking contracts to kill less than reputable men) as unclean and not worthy of using her samurai blade for. after she completes the ARR quests for samurai going into heavensward, however, chiyo's childhood love for her blade is returned, and she gives up mercenary work to become a part-time samurai again with the scions.

though she was tasked with killing lord lolorito by teledji adeleji, chiyo chose to give up being a mercenary and to "go straight" just before the praetorium, having been positively influenced by the other scions. unfortunately, this meant that yugiri and the doman refugees suffered the consequences of that, when lolorito refused to accept them into ul'dah. though it was a blessing in disguise as they were able to go to revenant's toll instead. still, chiyo resents lolorito for it and blames herself, as always.

the sylphs were very impressed by chiyo's dancing (her having been a performer for many years) and call her "dancing one" as a result. they also tried to marry her to ramuh (read: temper her). she politely but firmly declined.

chiyo loves moogles and was mostly busy fawning over king moggle mog during the trial. useless bard.

chiyo taught yugiri and the other doman au'ra how to apply a linkpearl behind the horn properly, as when she arrived to the west, she had no one to teach her.

chiyo is obsessed with nanamo: she thinks she's incredibly cute and idolizes the sultana. she actually sleeps with a plushie of nanamo, though she keeps it a secret. her idolization is no secret, though, given her very evident fangirling everytime they interact.

chiyo was shocked that doma had rebelled and been crushed in her absence, as she had left doma years before; she blames herself and feels that if she had been there, she could've helped, though it's more likely she would've just died. during the rebellion, chiyo's ex-boyfriend was killed by a particular garlean, and it comes up again in stormblood. chiyo receives an echo of the event upon meeting yugiri but doesn't know how to decipher it until stormblood.

chiyo is terrified of water and threw up over the railing multiple times during the leviathan trial.
