The other thing that really compels me about the Razputin Vodello au is the built-in cathartic release to it.

Dona and Augustus’ relief at getting to finally learn this child they’ve been mourning for years is alive, that they get to know him and love him not just memories, but in the present, as complicated as that might be. At learning that their child was raised by a group of people who wanted him safe and happy, rather than by those who only saw him as a weapon.

Truman being able to let go of the guilt he’s been carrying with him for years, to know that he didn’t fail, that the Aquatos are alive and well and love Razputin just as much as he does, as the whole Motherlobe does. That he doesn’t have to run himself ragged trying to anticipate everything all the time, that he can once again rely on himself in a way he’s been denying for years now.

Razputin putting his identity together into a singular idea, not living with this constant uncertainty about what he was “supposed” to be. Having the answers and finding contentment in those answers, rectifying not only his own history but his family by the simple act of refusing to hide who he is and what he can do (aka PN 1 but a little bit later).

And Milla, standing in the doorway of their little apartment, with Sasha and Oledander at her side, waiting for everyone to return from whenever Raz went. They cook her meals and they help her get what work she can do done. They remind her that no one is going to forget her in a padded cell ever again.

When Raz does come back, she holds him for what feels like an eternity, and can’t manage to summon up even the tiniest bit of anger towards him. He’s so much lighter than she’s ever seen him, so clearly surrounded by love. But more than anything, he came back. So few people in her old life came back.

So little of this place is like her old life. It will always live with her, but she no longer needs to live by it.

It’s so many characters being able to finally live in the present, of no longer being terrorized by the past, which really plays into PN 2 themes.
