Also, Knuckles outright calls Silver rude in Rivals 1:
Silver: He certainly knows how to run, I'll give him that... Hey, you there! Did you see that guy carrying something strange? Knuckles: Actually... He has this weird camera that changes things into cards... Wait a minute... Who are you? Silver: What'd you say!? How did he get a hold of it? Knuckles: You...! What are you mumbling about? Silver: Got no time to explain it to someone like you... See ya! Knuckles: "Someone like me?" Hey, I'm Knuckles! Haven't you heard of me? How rude! Asking questions without having the gall to introduce himself! Silver: Like I said before, I don't have time to deal with you right now. See ya! Knuckles: You little... Get back here!
And in Rivals 2, Silver tells Knuckles to shut up in Knuckles' storyline, to Rouge's displeasure:
Eggman Nega: Well, well. Looks like you acquired my Emerald Detector. Now, what else do you require? Knuckles: We still can't find the Master Emerald and I think you know where it is. Eggman Nega: Maybe I do and maybe I don't. Knuckles: Stop these games, Eggman! Silver: Shut up, Knuckles. I need to talk to him so just get out of here! Rouge: Hey, watch your mouth, kid! Don't take that tone with us! Eggman Nega: Silence! All of you! I'll give you all a REAL reason to be upset!
I stopped reading IDW after issue 64, in part because I was incredibly done by Silver's portrayal in the comics. On the one hand, there's just a problem of bad writing: things like the girls not picking up on Duo's "I couldn't save Silver and now he's dead :(" two seconds later "I was going to get help!!!!! D:", or the writers seemingly completely forgetting Whisper has a recorder in her mask that thus goes entirely unmentioned, which got kinda handwaved in a later issue. But an IC Silver would not have folded to Lanolin like he did: I would say Silver only cares for the authority of people who've proven to be on the same page as him, like Blaze or Espio. What has Lanolin done to prove that? She picks Duo's side immediately, and Silver just rolls with it without arguing with her about it and goes off to sulk instead of being proactive (I guess maybe as a callback to '06? Except in '06 Silver's entire worldview got rattled for a bit there by Amy, which issue 63 really did not achieve to that level). Silver's a proactive guy! He doesn't sit around waiting for troubles to come, he actively goes and does his best to solve them. And it's also just dumb things like issue 64 showing him all clumsily tripping or his quills poking out of the bush all obviously, or him (aka Meteor Smash guy) being unable to catch Duo in a one-meter fall. I agree with the fact that it's frustrating to see; it feels like Silver just does not get taken seriously.
And on that topic, a lot of Silver in the comics seems to be written to be very... cutesy, I think is a good way to describe it. Very uwu baby cinnamon roll, I've used as terms before too. Must protecc him, he's got no social skills because everyone in his future is dead and he was always alone and he's never been rude to anyone ever. Except the problem with Silver as a character is that he's not meant to be cutesy, I would argue, and the previous sentence is rife with misconceptions. He's got a deep-ass voice in Japanese and uses rude language and rude gestures up the wazoo, he's 100% down to murder someone to solve his problems and save the world, in the Rivals games he's got an insult or just general obstinateness ready for basically everyone, in the fourth and fifth line of his intro in '06 he mentions other people in Crisis City and both Rivals games show what a jerk he can be... That's really not uwu baby cinnamon roll material, in my opinion. What could arguably be cutesy is his naivety, but then indeed what Siggie describes: him not realising that not everybody shares the knowledge he has and sees things in the way he does. Not whatever IDW is pulling with him. But as for a solution, I don't know; if the writers think Silver is inherently meant to be a cutesy socially awkward li'l guy, I presume that's what they'll keep writing him as. To that end, I hope the Sonic Channel medias and the video games will keep providing a more in-character Silver!
What’s your thoughts on idw silver, I personally think he is ok but I feel like the idw comic didn’t really do very well with his character.
I can't say I like him... at all.
American Sonic media already has a history of needless and quite frankly terrible changes, whether made out of ignorance, xenophobia towards Sonic Team/SoJ, some vague, made-up sense of marketability, or all three. So, I'm already wary of media like that. They always change fundamental aspects of Sonic's appeal and are supremely unenjoyable to me as a result.
To stay on track here - why do I dislike IDW Silver? The main reason is that I think he's portrayed as way too polite and nice to people. He has no backbone. It's as if he was just based off of popular fanon or Archie comics, rather than the source material. I don't blame anyone for thinking Silver is some timid, polite sweetheart if fanon and IDW/Archie is all they have consumed, but I'm doing my best to dispel that notion for the sake of conquering misinformation. As a casual fan, it is understandable to have misconceptions, but I'm going to be much more harsh to official media.
I need to hammer home the fact that Silver is rude and often talks down to people. Sonic '06, Silver's debut game, showcases this very well. In an '06 cutscene, he talks down to Sonic after attacking him when his guard was down. The casual stride over to a wheezing, incapacitated Sonic kills me. The disrespect is fucking crazy.
In the level Flame Core, he acts haughty and superior about his abilities, even letting out a light chuckle at how pathetic the enemies are. And, a detail that is easy to miss, he doesn't even apologize for trying to kill Sonic.
That's not even mentioning the Rivals games being a wonderful source of Rude Silver™, where there are too many snide remarks to count.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
IDW Silver is a telltale case of Silver's nuance being stripped so that he only represents one trait of his- that trait being "naivety." Silver's naivety is mentioned twice by Blaze in Sonic '06 because this is relevant to the story. Naivety is Silver's fatal flaw that leads to him being easily manipulated by Mephiles. However, his naivety isn't due to some innocent, childlike outlook on the world. Silver takes everyone at face value and always assumes people are telling the truth to him due to a lack of social skills. This is why, when Silver mentions something outlandish or unbelievable to people, he is confused why they don't believe him. This is shown in both Rivals 2 and the Sonic x Silver wallpaper cover story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
IDW seems to completely miss this nuance and conflates "naivety" with childlikeness and innocence. When you realize this, decisions put towards Silver's characterization in IDW makes a lot of sense - his hyperactive excitement and adulation over Whisper is a good example, but how he doesn't talk back to Sonic calling him "flatware" in Issue 8 particularly bothers me.
Tumblr media
Realistically, Sonic would immediately get thrown into a wall if he said this to Silver.
Portrayals like IDW Silver are just so utterly confusing. How in the world does Silver get misconstrued this way, into something entirely opposite of what he is, in both fanon and official media? To be completely honest, it makes me frustrated. I want things to change and I feel like I have to speak up. I ended up writing an essay about Why Silver is Rude. I'm sorry anon.

[Review] Sonic Forces (PS4)
Tumblr media
An underrated Sonic game...?
After Sonic Generations in 2011, Sonic Team experimented with a different format in Lost World. 2017's Forces is then a follow-up of sorts to Generations with the Classic and Modern versions of Sonic in the game bringing their respective gameplay styles. They are joined by a third gameplay style in Forces... and now I must convey to you a conspiracy theory, and the reason I'm playing this immediately after the Boom games (also I finished watching the show, it's very good).
Tumblr media
The timing of Boom as a high-profile spinoff and some 2016 promotional artwork depicting the three Sonics together may suggest that at some point in development Boom's Sonic was to appear alongside the other two. There is some evidence in the final product to support this: the third element in Forces is the custom character, who has swappable Wisp-powered weapons and... a grappling hook, which is not dissimilar to Boom's Enerbeam. Some lines in the script about Classic Sonic being from another dimension have led people to assume they were repurposed from referencing Boom's Sonic; I consider this a red herring due to the timeline of scripting and early drafts we have access to, but I could be wrong. More convincing is the final boss—the "Death Egg Robot"—having a suspiciously similar appearance to Lyric's mech suit, perhaps leftover assets being reused. Boom Sonic's scarf and sports-tape bedecked gloves and shoes are available as Avatar cosmetics, so it's not like Boom was totally memory-holed either way. There's never been any official statements about this, so we have to piece together what information we have, but it seems plausible enough to me. Now with that out of the way...
Tumblr media
On the surface Forces seems to be taking a "darker and grittier" angle on the Sonic universe (although I'd argue that many games in the series have been trying this to various degrees since Adventure). The characters talk about war sometimes and the "Eggman has taken over 99.99% of Mobius while Sonic has been tortured in space prison for six months" plot sounds absurdly melodramatic, but once the game gets going it's mostly pretty light on in its tone and themes, not much different to other Sonic games. A handful of Sonic's friends do stuff off-screen and chat to you over the radio; I wish they'd pulled out all the stops for character appearances given the stakes of the story, but oh well. No Blaze, again.
The new co-antagonist is Infinite, the try-hard-iest edgelord you've ever seen with the dumbest, most awesome metal theme song. His illusion powers make for one or two cool level concepts, but often they are just a simple plot device. These powers also enable the reuse of previous antagonists like Zavok (snore) and Shadow... also Chaos is there in one cutscene and then proceeds to do sweet bugger all for the rest of the game. Some missed opportunities here.
Tumblr media
Forces lifts the Classic Sonic crossover concept from Generations without much interrogation. He just shows up through a portal for no reason and since he’s one of those silent protagonists for no reason, he isn’t even able to tell anyone about the Phantom Ruby (the source of Infinite’s powers) also appearing in Mania, which none of the other characters remember for no reason (something something other dimension??). His sidescrolling Classic-style levels were my least favourite but I’m glad they were included for a change of pace. He’s also been given Mania’s drop-dash which is a great snappy movement upgrade.
Modern Sonic is your standard boosting 3D corridors / 2D sections / rail grinding gameplay with homing attacks and stomps. The really interesting new addition is of course the Avatar, whose gameplay is a little slower paced and includes swinging and the Wispon. You choose from various weapons between stages and some are much more useful in certain levels; I wish the game indicated a recommendation. But most of them have powerful attacks for smashing groups of badniks as well as fun movement tech. A fourth level style has Modern Sonic team up with the Avatar, combining their abilities.
Tumblr media
The story plays out across a world map, going back and forth sporadically over the eight or so different environments. Of course many of these are throwback biomes, but with fun twists like a desertified Green Hill or a casino/jungle, and they invariably look colourful and detailed. The 30 levels are quite short on average (and some are even reused wholesale between characters), but I don’t mind this. It makes revisiting them for collectibles and missions breezier, and I ended up 100%ing the game thanks to this. Free DLC added three new Shadow levels plus the ability to play as Shadow in parts of the main game, as well as the option for Super Sonic which made those repeat runs even more painless. I believe this is also the first big Sonic game to do away with the concept of extra lives entirely, which I must applaud wholeheartedly.
Tumblr media
I’ve gone too long now without really getting into the Avatar/Rookie/Buddy, which really is a genius feature. People have been making their own Sonic OCs for forever, so integrating that in the game is an easy win. I loved creating characters that aren’t otherwise in the game, like Blaze, Sticks, or Fang, characters from other Sonic media like Tekno, Bunnie, or Sally, and even other furry-type characters like Krystal or Bubsy. I then adored unlocking more and more costume parts and dressing them up! It’s a great incentive to engage with the mission structure. It’s too bad you’re locked to one type until you beat the story, so I picked Tekno as my primary for the bird’s double jump ability. Truly this concept is powerful, and I’d love to see it expanded in future games since the options for customisation can feel limited. This definitely needs another pass.
My final point is about what I think is one of Forces’ greatest strengths: the soundtrack. While still grinding out Avatar levels and mission unlocks, I sought out the game’s music to listen to at work. I used to think I disliked vocal tracks playing over gameplay but I was wrong! (Maybe I just don’t like Crush 40, but don’t tell the Sonic fans I said that.) Whenever the main theme Fist Bump kicked into the chorus during a double boost, I got hype every time, that song is sick as hell! The Classic Sonic Mega Drive-style tracks rock, Infinite’s theme is a banger, even the jingles are a joy... the game is just infused with track after track of cool techno-symphonic music in different tones. Truly I developed a deep respect for lead composer Tomoya Ohtani playing this game (even though I already thought he did a great job on Rush Adventure and Unleashed).
Tumblr media
Before playing Forces for myself, I just knew that fans thought of it as "one of the bad ones", that it was supposedly farmed out to a B-team and half-baked to mediocrity. Sure it's got flaws and weaknesses, the story is dumb, the bosses aren't great... but it's solid, stylish, and I thought it had such a fun energy and so much cool stuff; now it's my favourite 3D Sonic game! To be fair I haven't played that many of them, so I'm going to work on that. Either way I've learned by now that my feelings on Sonic often go directly against the grain of mainstream opinion, and I'm so totally fine with that if it means I can listen to Fist Bump on repeat over here in the corner. It's a brand new day...!

I like to share love, so I'm glad it helps. I believe everyone can find love, and generally what you're describing sounds like my beliefs, though I'm much more a hard polytheist than a soft one. As far as Freya? Lots of potential things, but that's most of the basics. I'm glad that you found confidence though. Self-confidence is one of those things I struggle with, but if it helps I also think you look good too. Was more the emotional/mental side I was complimenting earlier though. :)
Ah! Now I understand, I want to apologize then, on my behalf for not fully understanding what you’d meant at the time! (Unfortunately, I answered your ask at around... 2 AM or so in NY time, so, I really am sorry if you got a whole long answer on something completely else!)
That aside, I really agree with your ideas on that. Everyone can find love, and, they deserve it to, as well in the sense of both the word, and well, love.
The reason I steered more towards... Physical love, I’d say, was mainly because I’m still... opening up in the side of emotional / mental side (in terms of Incubus-focuses and their emphasis of course!). On one end of the spectrum, Incubi / Succubi can have emotional sides rather than an erotic focus, but that’s just their actual representation. They’re amalgamation of human desires put into form, one can say, so to speak. The other, is the more commonly known eroticism as to, in some cultures, “mate with a human and create a foul half breed” (which, if I’m correct was more of the older archetypes. Considering Merlin was prophesied as one of their half children, I think it’s supposed to mean that side of the coin, though... I could be wrong in the context of time here..!)
The emotional / mental side of them aren’t really... always seen to people. In some ways, it’s almost nonexistent, but you’re like... What’s the saying?
“Always the bridesmaid, never the bride?”
That’s the sort of life motto you’re “branded” with, to acknowledge, and to understand. It’s definitely something that is sort of a burden to carry, because there’s times I’d fantasize about just a random person I met in a cafe and think, “Boy... What’d I’d do to wake up to someone like them tomorrow morning...” And then... there’d be more perverse thoughts of course and such, but the emotional side, of commitment, of just hand holding, or cuddling on the couch while reading 3 AM fanfics of your favorite characters... It leads you to believe all you’re really good for, is the eroticism, you know?
Of course, that’s only just what most incubi / succubi struggle with for the time being, and, after a while, I shook it off once I got back into stuff like Sailor Moon and of course Amy Rose from Sonic the hedgehog, and really sort of got the understanding of what love really means. I could harp on, on what you already know, but, it was amazing, to say the least. Not just, saying it in a card, or, valentines chocolates (I will, of course, eat them, if offered) but just... Saying it. With meaning.
Supporting the people you care about, and showing it in your daily life for them. Always being there to understand and help carry them to their potential. It’s magnificent, to say the least.
And, I’d like to apologize again, if I misunderstood anything as well, but that’s just my opinion on the emotions of the night folk, besides myself. It’s liberating, yet... Chained. You’re led to believe it’s only the physical side of you that’s meant to be charming, that it must be an aesthetic, a pleasure, a masterpiece if you will, but you’re not happy with it. A lot of the sex demons struggle with that. They’ve gotten lust down, charm, wit, tenacity... But they don't have love. At least, they don’t really understand it.
I want to really thank you for the kind words, honestly. While I’m still working up the courage to wake up every morning, look in the mirror and say, “Hey, rise and shine, today’s going to be wonderful. Can you see it written on your face?” I’ve definitely gotten far enough to not look at things as black and white as before. Before... It was like, all eyes are on you, keep appearances sharp, sensual, and walk with a gait that saunters over with power and grace.
...Now, I’m just... Me! To say the least. I wear my favorite outfits here and there, I splurge on myself to treat myself better, and really, just take care of myself. Of course, the reason I work with Venus / love magic best, is because I’ve well, unrequited love in the sense. There’s someone out there I’m living for, and, while I know it’s not meant to be, they’ve taught me a lot about myself, and about the world. Of course, it doesn’t hinder me or anything, but since I met that person, I think I finally understood what I know now about love, not just in the familial sense Parvati taught me, or the Eroticism Lilith exudes. I’m still learning though, like everyone else.
Still, your beliefs sound so... Unique and inspiring! In all honesty? It’s like a breath of fresh air, hearing about that, especially your bond with Freyja! I’d love to hear about the potential things you have there, someday, if it’s alright, since it seems I got the basics down! But, in all seriousness, I suppose looking back on my own, I don’t really “know” what my beliefs could be classified as. I would definitely say a form of soft polytheism, since Hinduism is a huge on the topic, as well as Paganism (at times). But at best? I’ve dealt with many deities and demons, and while I know they’re different in both persona, and context, I’ve always felt, maybe, they’re who we believe to be, whether it is being comfortable seeing the god of the afterlife as the goddess Izanami in Yomi, or Hades in the Underworld, you know? But, at the same time, there’s also lots of questions I find myself asking, to my own beliefs too. For example,
- Most Ars Goetian demons were at once, angels, the same for the fallen. Beelzebub was considered at one point, the god Baal, and the other, Bael. If that was the case... Does that mean, one can conjure either form and it would in fact, be Beelzebub / Baal / Bael in the context of nature? Would the separate entities acknowledge their other forms? In a sense, yes, when I summoned Baal for questions on politics and power, (What are the two, how can I use them effectively?) he spoke about his “other” form as being the king of flies and filth and that laying others down to build one’s self up is the nature of man. Things like that, besides his er... “advice”, tends to make me reevaluate what I already “understand”.
- Are the cultures we already know, not anglicized, but perhaps, evaluated in different ways for us to comprehend? It’s a more philosophical question, I admit, but it’s definitely one on my mind for some time. One could argue about the Roman and Greek mythos being near one and the same, but it’s not my place to do so (Considering it’s not my culture, nor... Well, my main interest. I’ve been more so pondering the question to some of my friends who do take up the mythos as their life and such, and we like to ask each other these sort of questions to ourselves. Not just to make fun or poke at each others beliefs, but more so to maybe grip some form of understanding of the things we have faith in.
- Who are we, as humans, and to what are the Gods and Goddesses? It sounds rather... rebellious in a sense, but there are times I question things and wonder, if Parvati is primordial and always in the background of things, yet, we can see her work or Vesta, or even Hera in the world, what are we really? Do we have a purpose that exists beyond their scope of things? And,  what are they, in terms of our human understanding? Mothers? Fearsome entities? Intangible concepts for us to acknowledge, respect, and see to answer that through our work as witches and devotees?
There’s so many questions I have for myself, that, while I don’t lay down myself as really anything but Hindu and Pagan, makes me so excited to see others who think differently. There's a lot to wonder and think about, not just about yourself and the subject matter of what your offerings do to please the deities or the demons we bond with in our every day lives.
So, really, thank you so much for taking the time out and having such a wonderful discussion with me here, like I always say, I’m always open to asks and anything you ever need! But also, thank you for letting me think about myself more, not just in how far I came along, but also how far I know I’m going to go, I can only say the same for you, for really getting your thoughts out to people! As silly as it may sound over .txt, but I offer my deepest gratitude and blessings for you to be as content as can be in your life, no matter where you go, anon.
Go in peace, and may the (I would say Æsir or the Vanir, however, I’m not sure which pantheon Freyja and Freyr would fall under considering the Æsir had Odin’s side, and the Vanir had the twins born under them, until taken under the Æsir as either hostages or honorary members?) deities make life nothing but grand to you, your problems lifting into the air like feathers in the wind, your freedom bound to no one, and your future enshrined with wonder and joy.
