Three Breweries That Take Their Barbecue Seriously – Texas Monthly

The craft beer and barbecue movements in Texas have grown hand in hand over the past decade. Despite the similar devotion of their fans and dedication of their practitioners, however, they haven’t exactly had a symbiotic relationship but for the occasional barbecue truck parked outside of a brewery. San Antonio’s Granary ’Cue & Brew, which opened in 2012, received national acclaim for its handcrafted beers and barbecue before closing in 2019. Over the years, other notable operations serving both items appeared on the Texas scene, including Cowtown Brewing Co., in Fort Worth, and Brick Vault Brewery and Barbecue, in Marathon. The natural progression has since continued, with more brewers pairing their pints with smoked meats, spurred in part by the pandemic. (Barbecue proved particularly resilient during the dining restrictions, while craft beer production fell for the first time in recent history.) Here are three joints that do both well.

Mike Holt is relieved to have customers back in his taproom, near San Antonio’s airport. “It’s meant to be a real communal, conversational environment,” he says of Weathered Souls, so shutting down during the pandemic was more than just a monetary drag. At the beginning of 2020, Holt and co-owner Marcus Baskerville had welcomed one of the city’s best barbecue joints, South BBQ, to take over the kitchen. The new menu was slashed back to just take-out burgers and appetizers until the doors reopened for diners later in the year.
The O.G. Burger is no slouch. Andrew Samia, owner of South BBQ, uses Prime-grade brisket trim for the smashed burger (get the double), which comes on a soft bun with all the fixings. On the lighter side is the brisket-stuffed avocado. Okay, it’s not that light, but the perfectly ripe fruit comes nestled in a delicately dressed arugula salad. On top are chopped brisket, jalapeño salsa verde, cilantro, and queso fresco.
Baskerville, who also serves as brewmaster, notes that their tap choices cover the spectrum, from the crisp Hardwood Classic pilsner to the Black Is Beautiful imperial stout. Baskerville created an international movement with his Black Is Beautiful initiative to promote racial equity; breweries around the world followed his stout recipe and donated all the proceeds from their iterations to social-justice nonprofits. The beer has become part of the Weathered Souls identity and brought in a more diverse crowd. Baskerville most enjoys a glass of it all on its own. “I wouldn’t pair that with barbecue, because more than likely you’re not going to finish your meal,” he jokes. He recommends a meat pairing with the West Coast IPA or the Castling schwarzbier, a dark lager I liked so much that I brought home a couple of crowlers—large aluminum cans filled with beer from the taps.

Cary Hodson and his wife, Molly Malone, opened their joint on December 5, 2015—his thirtieth birthday as well as the anniversary of the Twenty-first Amendment’s ratification, which repealed Prohibition in 1933. You could say Hodson was born to brew beer. He loves barbecue too, so when deciding which route to take for his new venture, he chose both.
Intrinsic had naysayers in the beginning. Hodson remembers meat aficionados complaining, “They’re a brewery, so they don’t take the barbecue seriously,” and vice versa from the beer nerds. But time has validated his initial instincts. Brewmaster Travis Ehlers increased Intrinsic’s beer offerings from 6 to 21, and pitmaster Joshua Browning revamped a once simple barbecue menu to include an array of specialty sandwiches, including vegetarian options such as the smoked jackfruit, whose flavor is remarkably similar to that of pulled pork. There’s also a Sunday brunch.
After the pandemic hit, Intrinsic expanded its canned beer selection so it could offer more brews to go, a move that also helped its barbecue sales as diners searched for one-stop shops. For pairings, I would suggest the Froot Tart, a cherry-lime Berliner weisse, to cut through the richness of the fatty brisket, or the Tree House Brown, a classic brown ale, to go alongside the MacRib sandwich (macaroni and cheese mixed with deboned rib meat). When you leave, crack another beer to enjoy as you walk around Garland’s recently revitalized downtown, where open containers are allowed.

On a trip to Corpus Christi shortly after the February Texas freeze, the only palm trees I saw that had any color left were the ones painted on the exterior of downtown’s Nueces Brewing Company. They’re an homage to Tradewinds Ford, the car dealership that occupied the site until it closed decades ago. Owners Brandon Harper and Cale Moore knew it was the right building for the brewery they opened in 2019, but they didn’t envision using the parking lot to hold a smoker until later.
“When we opened, we had no intention of doing food,” Harper says. Their goal was to “make beer that the guys who had never really been exposed to craft beer may actually like.” Their original Mexican lager and the ultralight Supremo remain the most popular choices on draft, but they offer more creative options too, such as the salty and sour mango gose and the Malay Brown Ale, brewed with cardamom and coffee.
Barbecue entered the picture after COVID-19 restrictions for brewery taprooms began more than a year ago. The pair decided they would “do whatever we have to do to be a restaurant,” Harper says. Beer sales were down anyway after Nueces transformed into a to-go-only operation selling crowlers. “It took about 45 days from the time [the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission] told us we could only do beer to go to open back up as a restaurant,” Harper recalls proudly. They turned an old mop closet into a kitchen and acquired a couple of smokers.
Now the barbecue is almost as popular as the beer, especially during the week. The menu features the usual meats and sides, but the brisket nachos scratch the bar-food itch after a cold glass of the dark schwarzbier, which tastes lighter than it looks. Dubbed “Nacho Mountain,” the tray is massive and comes topped with brisket, cheddar cheese, pickled jalapeños, pico de gallo, and sour cream.

Squeezing more out of taps: How Cape Town cut consumption in half

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA --Each morning, on opposite sides of this city, two women wake up thinking about water.
For both Helen Moffett and Musa Baba, entire days are choreographed around the vital resource: Where they will get it. How long the line will be. If it will be safe. How little they can manage with and still get by.
Each morning Ms. Baba, a barista, picks her way down a sandy hillside crowded with tin shacks to the communal tap she shares with about 100 of her neighbors. When it’s her turn, she fills a seven-gallon bucket, hoists it onto the top of her head, and carefully walks home, trying not to let too much slosh out into the powdery dust below. That water, after all, has a long day ahead of it. She’ll use it first to wash herself and her kids, then chuck the same water back into a bucket to scrub her floors. Finally, she’ll squeeze out the dregs from the mop, saving them to flush the toilet.
Twenty miles away, Ms. Moffett spends hours each day assembling and maintaining what she calls her “water buffet.” There’s the yellowish water she collects from a spring trickling out beneath a local construction site, jugs of well water she’s bummed from a neighbor, and the trash cans full of rainwater she keeps stashed in her backyard. Bottles and buckets stand at attention around her house, the liquid inside such a wide variety of colors that a friend once quipped that Moffett, a writer, should call her next book “50 Shades of Grey Water.”
A year ago, Baba and Moffett had almost nothing in common, and in many ways, they still live in two different universes. Moffett lives in a manicured gated community flanked by mountains. Baba’s house is two tin rooms she built herself that grip the side of a hill cluttered with other small shacks.
But these days, the two women, along with millions of others here, share a common preoccupation: how to save water. For Baba and many others, that’s been a lifelong project of necessity. But for another population of Cape Town residents, including Moffett, it’s part of a massive lifestyle pivot that has helped bring the city on the southwestern tip of South Africa back from the brink of the unthinkable.
As recently as March, Cape Town’s government was instructing residents to prepare for an imminent “Day Zero,” when taps across most of the city would be shut off indefinitely.
Following three of the driest years in the city’s recorded history, the growing water crisis earned Cape Town a dubious distinction: South Africa’s tourist hub, newspaper headlines across the world blared, was about to become the first developed city in the world to completely run out of water.
But behind the scenes, a tectonic shift was under way. As the city bartered for water with local farmers and hustled to build desalination plants, its residents simply started using less water. A lot less.
And it has worked--at least for now. In March, the city government announced that if current water use patterns held and winter rains fell normally (still a big if), there would be no Day Zero this year.
That’s because since 2016, using a combination of sticks and carrots to coax residents on board, the city has cut its water use by half. Its biggest customers now use 80 percent less. Today, every Capetonian is allowed just 13 gallons of municipal water per day--a little less than the amount it takes to flush a toilet four times. Use more, and the city reduces your pressure to a trickle, and your water bill can turn into a mortgage payment.
By comparison, during its infamous Millennium Drought of 1997 to 2009, Melbourne, Australia, also cut its water consumption by half, but it took 12 years, and at the end of it, residents were still guzzling 17 gallons a day. And between 2012 and 2016, parched California brought its home water use down 25 percent, to about 100 gallons per person per day.
Here in Cape Town, suburban residents have become connoisseurs of taking 90-second showers and then flushing their toilets with the water they collected while doing it. On popular water-saving Facebook groups, city residents debate the best way to wash their dog “off the grid” (bottled water, one woman suggests. Scrub him down with used bath water, offers another.) They swap the names of local companies that will sink a personal well in your backyard. Local police, meanwhile, receive a steady stream of tips from concerned residents who’ve seen their neighbors committing the ultimate middle-class drought crime: watering their lawns.
“There has become a real sense of urgency, even competition [among Capetonians] to see how low you can go [in using water],” says Kirsty Carden, an engineer at the University of Cape Town’s Urban Water Management Research Unit. “Yes, it’s been a crisis, but it’s also good to learn these lessons now. Cape Town isn’t the only city in the world that’s going to need them for the future.”
In South Africa--by some measures the most unequal country on earth--water restrictions have had another, less obvious effect: They have given the rich a small but rare experience of how the poor have always gotten by.
“It’s humbling, learning to think about water the way most South Africans have been doing for a long time,” Moffett says, arranging two gallon jugs of water from another local spring in the trunk of her car. “Every household chore takes three times as much thought, and three times as long.”
Plus, she says, “I can’t believe I’ve spent my life peeing into clean drinking water. What a waste.”
“We have always lived like this--nothing has changed because of the drought,” says Baba, sloshing a T-shirt in a sudsy bucket outside her house. “If now rich people can understand better what that’s like, I think that’s a good thing.”
Many of the city’s wealthiest residents have quietly begun to opt out of the city’s water system altogether. As restrictions on municipal supplies have tightened over the past several months, tens of thousands of people have gone essentially off-grid, drilling backyard wells to supply their showers and trucking in treated factory wastewater to fill their swimming pools. One luxury hotel chain recently announced it was constructing its own desalination plant.
“In the immediate future, people tapping into those alternate supplies relieves pressure on the system, so there’s great benefit for us,” says Xanthea Limberg, the Cape Town city councilor in charge of water. But in the long term, she worries, all the extra wells could drain the city’s vital aquifer, which also needs to recharge after periods of drought. Not to mention that the wealthy going off-grid could deprive the city of income it desperately needs to subsidize water access for the poor.
That divide between those with alternative sources of water and those without them is already beginning to play out in varied ways across the city.
On a recent morning, a convoy of six dirt-streaked police cars screeches to a halt in front of a public beach. Cyclists in spandex, floppy-haired teenagers on skateboards, and elderly women with fluffy white dogs turn to watch as cops pour out and march to the site of the crime--a public bathroom.
“This is where they’ve been filling up the buckets,” one of the policemen says, pointing to a still-dripping tap.
A group of homeless men here, they explain, were using municipal water to wash visitors’ cars--a violation of city water restrictions. But the culprits have made themselves scarce--and, anyway, the cops know they were unlikely to pay any fine they were issued. So they toss the contraband buckets in the back of a police van and pull away.
“These guys aren’t the city’s worst offenders by far,” explains Inspector Shane Blake. But the big malefactors have more resources to hide what they are doing. “There’s a lot of illegal water use happening, but we can’t catch them all.” So Blake and his team are largely limited to spooking the small transgressors.
“People have to get water somewhere. This guy isn’t the criminal,” one onlooker mumbles at the next stop, a shack settlement, as police hand out a $15 ticket to a man scrubbing down a taxi with water from a communal tap. “This guy is just trying to make a living.”
Across town, water trucks rumble into Cape Town’s tree-lined suburbs, carrying a precious cargo--recycled wastewater from local factories and vineyards. For a few hundred dollars, residents can pay to have their pools filled with the treated discharges, which are clean enough to swim in.
“Otherwise, this water just goes straight into the ocean,” says one owner of a water delivery company. (He asks not to be identified because past media attention has incited massive public anger against his company. Many Capetonians suspect that most private water suppliers are illegally sourcing their water from boreholes, which are allowed only for personal use.)
“Look, if you have the money, you can always buy your way--at least to some extent--out of crises, and this drought is no exception,” he says. “You can ask if that’s fair or not, but it’s not illegal.”
But Nazeer Sonday doesn’t see it that way. A farmer and activist in Philippi, a township of Cape Town, he says this crisis is about more than shifting water use off the grid.
“For me, water is a big social justice issue,” he says. “A golf course consumes 2 million liters a day, and how many liters are people wasting watering English gardens in Africa? How many liters are filling private swimming pools? Hello! Water is our shared resource, and those people are taking more than their share.”
For him, solving Cape Town’s water woes requires a different approach than just forcing people to use less water from the city system. As climate change and the extreme weather it brings close in, people need to learn to see water as finite.
“The city sees this as a supply and demand issue--as in, we have the demand, so let’s find the supply,” he says. “But we can’t go on like that forever. At some point, we have to learn how to conserve, too.”

Chances are you are either going to leverage SEO or pay for some ads.
But what if there was another way to get traffic from Google? A way that didn’t take as long as SEO and didn’t cost money like paid ads. And no, I’m not talking about Google News… there is actually an easier way.
It’s so effective that it drove 18,800 visitors to my site in the last 3 months. Just look at the screenshot above.
So, what is it?
Google Discover
Similar to how you have feeds on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, did you know Google has a feed for you.
It’s called Google Discover.
If you mainly use Google on your laptop or desktop computer, chances are you haven’t seen it. But if you have the Google mobile app or the Chrome mobile app, you probably have already seen it.
Here’s what it looks like on an iPhone:
This is Google’s version of a social feed.
Here’s how it works… Google Discover results, which appear below the search box on the Google mobile app and Chrome mobile app, show a summary of web pages as cards. These cards are a scrollable list of topics, almost like a social feed, that you can browse on your mobile devices.
Tapping one of these cards from Google search home will send you directly to the page you just clicked on.
And if you are wondering why you are seeing certain stories that others may not be, it’s because the recommendations are based on search history, interactions with Google products, and who you choose to follow directly via Google Discover.
But here is where it’s getting interesting…
Google Discover is everywhere, you just don’t know it
Discover results for some topics also appear within the search engine results under the label “Interesting finds.”
If you click one of these stories, it’ll take you directly to that web page, or, if you click to see “more stories” at the bottom of the Interesting Finds card, it’ll bring you to a new Google Discover user interface where you can follow that topic, follow related topics, and explore related Discover listings.
Now if you have a Pixel phone, you’ve seen Discover a lot, but again you just haven’t realized it.
By simply swiping right on your Pixel phone home screen you get a customizable and personalized feed just like the image above.
Now, you may be wondering, how is this different than just using Google News? Because they have a top stories section which is kind of like a feed, right?
Unlike top stories, Discover doesn’t limit rankings to what’s published most recently.
If Google thinks a user would find earlier content interesting, then Discover might show it. Discover also features videos, sports scores, entertainment updates such a movie, stock prices, event info for things like a music festival, and much more.
Google is positioning Discover as a content hub for all of your interests just like Facebook is doing with their feed.
In other words, this is Google’s version of your Facebook feed.
Similar to following a hashtag on Instagram, you can follow a topic of interest on Discover. Also, similar to Instagram’s Explore Page, you don’t need to follow anything to get content you might like. Discover is aiming to show you content you’d be interested in before you even know you want it.
The key is “before you knew about it.” Just like how Facebook and Instagram do the same thing.
So, why should you care about Google Discover?
Because it can drive you a ton of traffic.
Just check out one of the clients of my ad agency, Neil Patel Digital. Look at their Discover traffic.
They generated 3.64 million impressions in the last 28 days and 79,000 clicks to their site.
That’s a ton of traffic. In addition, all of those impressions help with branding.
Now you may not care about branding but the larger your brand, the easier it is to rank on Google. Brand search volume is more correlated with rankings than links or domain authority.
And as Google’s ex-CEO stated:
Brands are the solution, not the problem. Brands are how you sort out the cesspool.
So, all of those impressions you can generate from Discover are great because they will help put your brand out there. It helps with the concept called the Rule of 7, in which when someone sees or interacts with your brand 7 times, they are much more likely to become a loyal customer.
This can also help with Google’s E-A-T algorithm updates. It is the best way if you want to build up your expertise and credibility as an author. Discover is a simple way to help you get there.
So, how can you get more traffic from Discover?
How to optimize for Google Discover
Luckily, it’s not as complicated as SEO and the results happen much faster. Still not instant, but over time you should see your Discover traffic continually rising.
Here are 3 simple tips that will help:
Be sure to use high-quality images. Images appear with every Discover result, so relevant and high-quality images that accompany your content is important. And just like with your headlines and titles, try to choose images that are more likely to entice clicks. Images that are shocking or evoke curiosity will do the trick.
Content is king, but if you don’t write about the right stuff then you won’t show up. Check which topics Google suggests following inside of Discover to see if those topics align with your website. If it does, consider using their suggested topics as a guide to what people are interested in and write similar content. Of course, you don’t want to copy others, you want to go above and beyond so you can one-up your competition. Use Brian Dean’s skyscraper technique to do this.
Hopefully, when you’re creating your website content, you’re already taking some time to think about maximizing your content. What do I mean by that? Maximizing your content means thinking about your website as an API for your content. So yes, your content lives on your site, but hopefully, you’re creating it keeping in mind how it can be posted or promoted in other areas so you can secure backlinks and attract social engagement across other relevant channels. To do this you need to focus on topics with shareability, topics that are trending, topics with growing interest, and also focus on leveraging clickbait and enticing titles and headlines. Remember that Google Discover is like a social feed. If you’re only trying to make your content work hard for you on your site, you’re not getting enough out of it.
Once you make a deliberate effort to go after Discover traffic, it’s time to measure how you are doing.
Analyzing your traffic
Chances are, you use Google Analytics. But to see how well you are doing on Discover, it’s easier if you use Google Search Console.
Head over to Search Console and log in.
Now, on the left side, you’ll see a navigation menu.
I want you to click on “Discover.”
You’ll now see a report that looks something like this.
Compared to the screenshot I showcased earlier, I barely get any Discover traffic.
Why you may ask?
Do you notice a trend with my chart? Well, I tend to publish content every Tuesday and that’s the day I get Discover traffic.
Similar to any other social network (and unlike traditional SEO), you mainly see traffic as you post new content. It’s not long-term traffic that is consistent, instead, you keep getting quick bursts of traffic.
I only blog once a week, but if I write multiple pieces of content a day, my Discover traffic would skyrocket.
Conclusion
Whether you are a fan of Discover or not, it doesn’t matter. As a marketer, you need to look at it as another channel.
Data has already shown that it is popular and as long as Google keeps pushing it, people will use it.
So why not leverage it to your advantage and harness it to drive traffic and sales for your site?
Plus, you should never rely on traffic from just one channel alone because the moment an algorithm change happens, it can crush your traffic. That’s why you need to take an omnichannel approach and leverage any relevant channel out there.

Just check out one of the clients of my ad agency, Neil Patel Digital. Look at their Discover traffic.
They generated 3.64 million impressions in the last 28 days and 79,000 clicks to their site.
That’s a ton of traffic. In addition, all of those impressions help with branding.
Now you may not care about branding but the larger your brand, the easier it is to rank on Google. Brand search volume is more correlated with rankings than links or domain authority.
And as Google’s ex-CEO stated:
Brands are the solution, not the problem. Brands are how you sort out the cesspool.
So, all of those impressions you can generate from Discover are great because they will help put your brand out there. It helps with the concept called the Rule of 7, in which when someone sees or interacts with your brand 7 times, they are much more likely to become a loyal customer.
This can also help with Google’s E-A-T algorithm updates. It is the best way if you want to build up your expertise and credibility as an author. Discover is a simple way to help you get there.
So, how can you get more traffic from Discover?
How to optimize for Google Discover
Luckily, it’s not as complicated as SEO and the results happen much faster. Still not instant, but over time you should see your Discover traffic continually rising.
Here are 3 simple tips that will help:

Hopefully, when you’re creating your website content, you’re already taking some time to think about maximizing your content. What do I mean by that? Maximizing your content means thinking about your website as an API for your content. So yes, your content lives on your site, but hopefully, you’re creating it keeping in mind how it can be posted or promoted in other areas so you can secure backlinks and attract social engagement across other relevant channels. To do this you need to focus on topics with shareability, topics that are trending, topics with growing interest, and also focus on leveraging clickbait and enticing titles and headlines. Remember that Google Discover is like a social feed. If you’re only trying to make your content work hard for you on your site, you’re not getting enough out of it.
Once you make a deliberate effort to go after Discover traffic, it’s time to measure how you are doing.
Analyzing your traffic
Chances are, you use Google Analytics. But to see how well you are doing on Discover, it’s easier if you use Google Search Console.
Head over to Search Console and log in.
Now, on the left side, you’ll see a navigation menu.
I want you to click on “Discover.”
You’ll now see a report that looks something like this.
Compared to the screenshot I showcased earlier, I barely get any Discover traffic.
Why you may ask?
Do you notice a trend with my chart? Well, I tend to publish content every Tuesday and that’s the day I get Discover traffic.
Similar to any other social network (and unlike traditional SEO), you mainly see traffic as you post new content. It’s not long-term traffic that is consistent, instead, you keep getting quick bursts of traffic.
I only blog once a week, but if I write multiple pieces of content a day, my Discover traffic would skyrocket.
Conclusion
Whether you are a fan of Discover or not, it doesn’t matter. As a marketer, you need to look at it as another channel.
Data has already shown that it is popular and as long as Google keeps pushing it, people will use it.
So why not leverage it to your advantage and harness it to drive traffic and sales for your site?
Plus, you should never rely on traffic from just one channel alone because the moment an algorithm change happens, it can crush your traffic. That’s why you need to take an omnichannel approach and leverage any relevant channel out there.

How I Generate 18,800 Visitors from Google Without SEO or Ads
If you want to get traffic from Google, how would you go about it?
Chances are you are either going to leverage SEO or pay for some ads.
But what if there was another way to get traffic from Google? A way that didn’t take as long as SEO and didn’t cost money like paid ads. And no, I’m not talking about Google News… there is actually an easier way.
It’s so effective that it drove 18,800 visitors to my site in the last 3 months. Just look at the screenshot above.
So, what is it?
Google Discover
Similar to how you have feeds on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, did you know Google has a feed for you.
It’s called Google Discover.
If you mainly use Google on your laptop or desktop computer, chances are you haven’t seen it. But if you have the Google mobile app or the Chrome mobile app, you probably have already seen it.
Here’s what it looks like on an iPhone:
This is Google’s version of a social feed.
Here’s how it works… Google Discover results, which appear below the search box on the Google mobile app and Chrome mobile app, show a summary of web pages as cards. These cards are a scrollable list of topics, almost like a social feed, that you can browse on your mobile devices.
Tapping one of these cards from Google search home will send you directly to the page you just clicked on.
And if you are wondering why you are seeing certain stories that others may not be, it’s because the recommendations are based on search history, interactions with Google products, and who you choose to follow directly via Google Discover.
But here is where it’s getting interesting…
Google Discover is everywhere, you just don’t know it
Discover results for some topics also appear within the search engine results under the label “Interesting finds.”
If you click one of these stories, it’ll take you directly to that web page, or, if you click to see “more stories” at the bottom of the Interesting Finds card, it’ll bring you to a new Google Discover user interface where you can follow that topic, follow related topics, and explore related Discover listings.
Now if you have a Pixel phone, you’ve seen Discover a lot, but again you just haven’t realized it.
By simply swiping right on your Pixel phone home screen you get a customizable and personalized feed just like the image above.
Now, you may be wondering, how is this different than just using Google News? Because they have a top stories section which is kind of like a feed, right?
Unlike top stories, Discover doesn’t limit rankings to what’s published most recently.
If Google thinks a user would find earlier content interesting, then Discover might show it. Discover also features videos, sports scores, entertainment updates such a movie, stock prices, event info for things like a music festival, and much more.
Google is positioning Discover as a content hub for all of your interests just like Facebook is doing with their feed.
In other words, this is Google’s version of your Facebook feed.
Similar to following a hashtag on Instagram, you can follow a topic of interest on Discover. Also, similar to Instagram’s Explore Page, you don’t need to follow anything to get content you might like. Discover is aiming to show you content you’d be interested in before you even know you want it.
The key is “before you knew about it.” Just like how Facebook and Instagram do the same thing.
So, why should you care about Google Discover?
Because it can drive you a ton of traffic.

How to Do a Keyword-Driven Content Audit (with Keyword Explorer)

As content marketers, we frequently suffer from What Have You Done For Me Lately Syndrome (WHYDFMLS). As soon as we're done with one piece of content, we're on to the next one, barely stopping to check analytics for a couple of days. Analytics themselves are to blame, in part. Our default window into traffic-based analytics is somewhere in the realm of 30 days, leading us to neglect older content that's still performing well but may not be competing day-to-day with the latest and greatest.
I'm a big believer in digging back into your hidden gems and looking for content that's still performing but may be due for an update, rewrite, or even just testing a better title/headline. How do we find this content, which is often buried in our this-week-focused analytics?
Let's think like SEOs. One approach is to find older content that's still ranking for a solid number of keywords, but may be out of date or under-performing. This is content that's still driving traffic, but we may be overlooking. We don't have to fight an uphill battle to get it ranking – we just have to better tap the potential this content is already demonstrating.
Step 0 – The "Exact Page" filter
Before we begin, I'm going to jump to the end. You may know that we recently launched Keywords By Site in Keyword Explorer, which allows you to peer into a keyword "universe" of millions of searches to see how a given domain is ranking. What you may not know is that you can also look up a specific page with the "Exact Page" filter. Go to the Keyword Explorer home page, and it's the last entry in the pull-down:

Click the search (magnifying glass) button and you'll get back something like this:
Even for my small blog, I've got a healthy list of keywords here, and some ranking in the top 50 that have solid volume. I also know that this post still gets decent traffic, even though it was written in 2009. If I were still active in the usability space, this would be a prime candidate for a rewrite, and I'd know exactly what keywords to target.
This is all well and good when you have an exact page in mind, but how do you audit an entire site or blog when you don't know what's performing for you? I'm going to outline a 6-step process below.
Step 1 – Get all rankings
Let's say I want to find some buried content treasure right here on the Moz Blog. In the Keyword Explorer menu, I'll select "root domain" and enter our root domain, "moz.com":
I'll get a similar report as in Step 0. Under "Top Ranking Keywords", I'm going to select "See all ranking keywords". In this case, I get back a table of more than 53,000 keywords that moz.com currently ranks
for. Not too shabby. These are not just keywords I actively track, but all of the keywords moz.com ranks for in Keyword Explorer's "universe" of roughly 40 million keywords.
Step 2 – Export keywords
So, how does a keyword list help us to better understand our content? Above the keyword table, you'll see two options, "Export CSV" and "Add to...":
I'm going to choose the export – we're going to want the whole, beautiful mess for this job. What I'll get back is a file with every keyword and the following columns:
Keyword
Minimum Volume
Maximum Volume
Keyword Difficulty
Top Rank
Top Ranking URL
That last column is the important one. The export contains the top ranking URL for moz.com for each of the keywords (note: your maximum export size does vary with your Moz Pro membership level). This is where we can start forging the content connection.
Step 3 – Filter pages
I ended up with 30K keyword/URL pairings in the CSV. So that the viewers at home can follow along, I'm going to do the next few steps in Google Sheets. The first thing I want to do is filter out just what I'm interested in. In the "Data" menu, select "Filter". You'll see green arrows appear next to each column header. Click on the one next to "Top Ranking URL" (the last column). I'm going to use "Filter by condition" with "Text contains" and isolate all ranking URLs with "/blog/" in them:
This leaves me with 13,266 keyword/URL pairings. Personally, I like to copy and paste the filtered data to a new worksheet, just because working with filtered data tends to be a bit unpredictable. So, now I've got a separate worksheet (named "Filtered") with just the keywords where the Moz blog ranks.
Step 4 – Pivot pages
If you haven't used pivot tables, I'd strongly encourage you to check them out. Annie Cushing has a great Excel tutorial on pivot tables, and I'll walk you through a couple of basics in Google Sheets. Generally, you use pivot tables when you want to group data and calculate statistics on those groups very quickly. In this case, what I want to do is group all of the matching URLs in my data set and get the counts. In other words, how many keywords is each unique blog post ranking on?
After selecting all of the data on that new "Filtered" tab, click the "Data" menu again, and then "Pivot tables..." at the bottom. This opens up a new sheet with a blank table. On the right are some slightly cryptic options. Under "Rows", I'm going to add "Top Ranking URL". This tells Google Sheets that each row in the pivot table should be a unique (grouped) URL from the top ranking URLs. Next, I'll select the "Values"::
The COUNTA() function just tells Google Sheets to return the total count for each URL (for some reason, COUNT() only works on numeric values). As a bonus, I've also selected the SUM() of Max Volume. This will total up the volume for all of the ranking keywords in our data set for each URL.
Pivot table results can be a bit hard to work with (in both Excel and Google Sheets), so I'm going to copy and paste the data (as values only) into a new sheet called "Audit".
Step 5 – Find candidates
Let's get to the good stuff. When I group the URLs, I'm left with 1,604 unique blog posts in this particular data set. I can easily sort by posts ranking for the most keywords or posts with the most potential search volume (under "Data" / "Sort range"). I'm going to stick to raw keyword count. Here's just a sample:
Obviously, there's a ton here to dig into, but right away I noticed that two of the posts in the top 10 seemed to have some connection to graphics and/or image search. This stood out, because it's not a topic we write about a lot. Turns out the first one is a video from May 2017, so not a great candidate for an update. The second, however (highlighted), is a tools post from early 2013. This post was surprisingly popular, and given how many new tools have come out in the past 4-1/2 years, is a perfect candidate to rewrite.

Step 6 – Back to Step 0
Remember that "Exact URL" option I talked about at the beginning of this post? Well, now I've got a URL to plug back into that feature and learn more about. Our data dump showed 170 ranking keywords, but when I target that exact URL, I'm likely to get even more data. Here's just a sample:
Sure enough, I get almost double that count (348) with an exact URL search, and now I have an entire treasure trove to sort through. I sorted by volume (descending) here, just to get a sense of some of the more interesting keywords. I can, of course, repeat Step 6 with any of the URLs from Step 5 until I narrow down my best prospects.
Next steps (for the adventurous)
If I were going to rewrite the post I found, I'd want to make sure that I'm targeting two sets of keywords: (1) the important keywords I currently rank highly on (don't want to lose that traffic) and (2) higher volume keywords I have the potential to rank on if I target them better. I might target, for example, a few choice keywords where I currently rank in the top 20 results and have a Page Authority that's better than (or, at least, not too far from) the listed Keyword Difficulty.
Of course, you can also feed any of these keywords back into Keyword Explorer for more suggestions. Ideally, you're looking for a handful of solid keyword concepts to target. The goal isn't to stuff every variation into your rewritten post. The goal is to create a better, newer, more useful post that also happens to intelligently incorporate highly relevant keywords.

and today on the show we have Paul Venables on and we're gonna be talking about how he's been going out there and finding abandoned videos on YouTube with links to domain names that are not claimed going out there and buying them for as little as one dollar and making anywhere between 1,000 and 2,000 dollars per month passively doing it now this is one of those things that I don't get the chance to do all the different methods that people on my show do but this is something that I'm seriously considering doing myself and there's tons of room for anyone to do it let's get into it here's Paul we are here today with all Venables Paul welcome to the show thank you very much Mike it's great to be on Paul this is your first time on my show so when you tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do yeah well even though it's my first time I've been a fan for years so it's really cool to to get the opportunity to do this so to give you a little bit of a back story back in 2012 I started doing pretty well with SEO doing websites and a guy I knew by the name of Andrew Hansen he recommended he had a blog and you talked about SEO and stuff and he was showing what he was doing and he was living different places throughout the world and at the time he was living down in Puerto Vallarta Mexico and I thought that was really cool and so then after getting my sites up and doing pretty well with that I moved down with my girlfriend at the time he's now my wife and we went down to Puerto bio to Mexico and this was back in 2012 at the beginning of 2012 okay and so I was dependent on my sites then and as we all No there was a big big Google algorithm chain I know that story like right when you start telling me you're dependent on your sites I'm like okay I know I know what happens here yeah yeah so as you can imagine moving to a foreign country and then all the sites being down that was a pretty big change that I had to scramble I had to think of something quick to to make money and I had some friends that were doing the video marketing at the time and I didn't know much about it I think I had a couple videos that I had done like a year before didn't really do anything with them but I did notice that there was still kind of up and making a few sales so that was kind of cool I just didn't really scale it out or anything like that but at the time it was like there was a fire that just lit right under me I had to do something I had to make something to happen quick otherwise I'll be in Mexico with no money you know so so I worked my tail off and found that I could actually rank a video much quicker than I could a website and I was able to just tap into all those keywords that I had used before with my website doing kind of Google Sniper sort of things back then and I could just rank those keywords with videos and make new videos and the rankings would come in a whole lot quicker and so that was amazing and then I was able to actually scale that out and and have more videos and it really took off so you started making a full-time income from video ranking yeah matter of fact it was like I put my websites from the time they all collapsed to about then I just I started working hard on on video marketing and then about 45 days after that I was I was making comfortable full time income yeah that's also like like just from affiliate marketing or from yep from straight affiliate marketing okay yeah awesome well I know that you eventually I'm not sure if it was during that time or or after well you came up with a different kind of a method where you actually didn't have to make any of the videos yourself I'm gonna go ahead and read off the headline for the product we're gonna be talking about today it says revealed how were legally steal other people's video traffic to earn affiliate Commission's in 24 hours or less without having to rank videos use paid ads or even make a video now I know that you and I were we're talking before this interview about how you don't want to be part of the kind of high P internet marketing scam II make money online niche here but this is a little bit high P here we've got things like you don't have to do any work you don't have to have to make a video you don't have to do it anything maybe in 24 hours or less so walk us through this bring it to bring us back down to earth and what's this all about okay great well yeah and so in 2012 that's when I I made this big shift and I started doing video marketing and so all the way up till like 2015 this was last summer in August I found that there's actually other ways where instead of doing the traditional video marketing approach which is still good but you have to do a lot of work okay so there's the keyword research product research and then you have to create the video you have to optimize the video and then you have to try to rank that video and because you're trying to rank in Google and YouTube there's like these moving parts okay so sometimes there's never like a hundred percent certainty because you don't control those moving parts right so with this method that I discovered I discovered it by looking at my competitors and looking at other videos that were ranked so what was already ranked on the top of YouTube and Google and what I found was that there are some videos that were getting a lot of traffic that had expired domains and I couldn't believe it at first I clicked into it and I was named you know this this person probably doesn't know what they're doing because it's not redirecting to something like an offer or something but then I took it one step further and I went into a domain registrar and I was able to actually find that I could register that domain and redirect the traffic to my own offer or whatever I wanted and you when you say they had expired domains you mean like in the description underneath the video there was like a lot of people we've all seen these YouTube videos and underneath it'll say go ahead and check out the link below there were links there that people would originally set up set it up and then they'd forgotten about it correct yeah yeah so the link in their description and their call to action was all pointing at an expired domain and so that way you could go in and the hard part was was finding some of this stuff but there was a lot to be found and I was they actually able to eventually automate that process and I got a software I was actually doing this thinking about like what it could do myself and then later then that would be cool to teach people this as well let's talk some numbers here and let's talk a little bit about the results that you've gotten doing this I want to make sure that people understand like are you able to make twenty thousand dollars a month from doing this kind of thing are you able to make twenty dollars a month from doing this what's what are your results we're not saying that everyone in the world can get these results because we can't guarantee that kind of stuff that's illegal but absolutely I want to know what you've gotten as far as as results go and what's what's realistic okay well I've I could comfortably say I've gotten thousands of dollars with this method and the really cool thing about it is I don't like to make it sound super simple and everything but when you find a really great domain that is associated with multiple videos that gets a lot of traffic then it's really up to you to do whatever you want with that traffic okay so it could be a redirection to a very congruence affiliate offer it could be your redirecting that traffic to an opt-in page where you're collecting their email in exchange for a free report or something free and then with the email address then you can continue to market to them and also continue to add value but you can make more money that way as well so there's a lot of things that can be done with it and it's really up to you to to go out and get it done and and find it but the research part with the software is all automated now which is very exciting and I would actually be happy to share it with you if you want to see definitely and I just wanted just say everyone watching I'm gonna have the sales page preview' underneath the interview so you're gonna actually be able to scroll down we can see some some results here from some videos that you've gotten traffic from you can see you've got the statistics here of the videos and that they're actually getting views and traffic millions on some of them here you've also got income that I know you're gonna share with us inside of the demo in there so go ahead go ahead and uh share your screen let's take a look I want to see it how this all works okay great it sounds good one minute here okay so now we have the video traffic Genie loaded here and I wanted to show you a search that I did with Sony TV review just typed in this it's a Sony TV so like you can just type in a niche or a product name something like that it's always great to be creative about it but this cuz I just did a Sony TV review I found this as a result I stopped the search I probably would be getting some more results but I just stopped it and anyway I just wanted to show you what I could do with this video and so this was a video that came up in the results and I can click on check I click on in the settings section I'm gonna change this so I can show you inside of the window and click on check domain and then there's this little thing a window with busted name it comes up in it lets you know that it's available and then and click on open in YouTube and show you this video to get more information about it and you can look through the video it's a basic review video it has a specific product name in here which is Sony I'm not gonna read this all off but very specific TV and as you probably know when you do product name keywords then when they're being searched the people have a lot more of a buyer intent if they're willing to type in this model number and and they do often get a lot of searches surprisingly for for these specific model number keywords so uh so anyway in this video you can look through it and then what I like to do before getting serious at all I like to see statistics okay because it's really important to see that the video is getting used because up here you see 137 thousand okay well that's that's great that's impressive but when you see statistics there might be a drop there might even be sometimes like a spike and then there's like a flatline or something in this case it was going really well and then it kind of plateaued if you look in this this view it kind of looks like it's plateaued but in daily you can see it there's still daily traffic and I have actually another method to show you exactly what you can get on a daily basis but we can skip that right now I can show you in the members area but you can actually at least see that it's getting daily so if anything it's it's okay and it may get it probably gets a few searches on a daily basis well that could be alright especially when you have a product name keyword well inside a video traffic Genie and this is a new feature we added this is for the video traffic Genie gold which there's some features you can unlock on the upsell this is called the whale finder okay what this does is when you click this button you will see everything associated to that one domain okay so we can find that there may be more videos attached to this domain here so as I went up there made a bunch of videos you can find all the other videos attached to that domain absolutely so in this case we can click the whale finder button and we can see that when we get the domain will actually get many more videos with many more product name keyword reviews that can bring in a lot more targeted traffic that's cool thanks I like that I like that and I want to point out here that when you but like if you go out there you don't have to make a video you don't have to you're not buying the channel you're not talking anyone you're not going out there and negotiating I know there's methods that I've heard about before where people will find videos and they'll find videos that don't have any links under them they're getting a lot of views and then they'll pay the person ten dollars or more or less to to be able to put a link inside of the description that can be like that can take a lot of time people answer you you never know with this all you have to do is find the domain and you just pay how much you have to pay for the domain well with one on one if you're new to one on one it's only I believe a dollar to get a.com sometimes they have specialist for other dollars for other coms for a dollar but uh but at most it's ten bucks and most it's ten bucks for a domain and you get that for an entire year so in this case if you get the main domain here then you're getting a bunch of videos and so it's really up to you get up to a year to see if you can make more than ten bucks then you're in the profit mode you're in you're in doing really well and you got a good ROI if you can pass that ten dollar mark and you could go out there and you could send that to a really quick little you can make a little really little quick Amazon review site and then send people over to Amazon or if they buy it you get a commission you could go and sell that domain to people if you want to you can put it on flip up sell the domain if you want to be even more creative create a little website and yeah the value even more on it that that's personally what I would do is yeah you of that but if you don't know how to make a website I mean you can always pay someone on Fiverr to do it for you but no I see I see lots of cool opportunities here with that and obviously I mean it's worked for you I think that's that's really important to me on this and that's what made this stick out for me is that you've done this it's not like you've just gone up there and said oh this is a neat concept let me make a tool about it and then I'll sell the tool make some money from it like it's fine that you're selling the tool making money I think that's great but I also think it's great that you've done this process yourself you've done it manually which sounds like a pain in the butt yep go through and just search around in YouTube and try to get lucky and find a domain name that it isn't registered that doesn't sound like like much fun how are you doing it before how are you finding that without the software well without the software what I do is I just do a keyword search in YouTube and then go from rank order and go down the line and do like a right-click to open it up in a new tab and see if it said specifically that it was like an unsecured action and that would mean that it's more often than not it's expired so there is that way and then another thing to what what this software does is it does use YouTube's API and it does search in rank order so what you're getting is from the very top listings are the rankings all the way down one thing that I saw on your sales page is that not only are you getting results but you've had students that are getting results as well tell me a little bit about their results because I'm sure people are watching this now going and I get this question all the time isn't this gonna get saturated if everyone's doing it aren't all the domains gonna get taken and then there'll be none left for me yeah well I think maybe that might be applicable if we were working with something that was very static and like had absolutely like no updates you know what I mean if there was like a limit if there's like YouTube has 1,000 videos and that's gonna be it for the next two years you know okay yeah that might be the case but that's not the case and YouTube is the third largest site out there Facebook and Google being above it and it has videos all the time every day there's lots of videos being uploaded loaded to YouTube and so the sense there's gonna be so many videos there's gonna be people that forget about their videos and I think many of the times too and I come up come across a lot in the software is that somebody might try to rank a video and they might get caught up with something else move on forget about it it may not rank for them to you know since the algorithms have changed for some YouTube is a much trickier process to actually get ranked in you know and so there could be a lot of people that just try to rank and they don't really get their rankings at that time and they move on but as soon as the video gets more high retention views and it has more h2 it can climb up the rankings and the video could be ranked and they might have completely forgotten about it and they probably have not only do they have these links on YouTube videos I would bet 100% certain that there are that you're getting traffic from other places as well WordPress other WordPress websites maybe even from other domain names we'll have just random places from around the internet like if they have these links on a YouTube video they probably put somewhere else like they were working on it and then they just went on to something else like I've done that yeah absolutely yeah yeah cool and yeah as a special bonus too I also have a method that you can use to get unique content so you can build out that domain and to take it one step further if you want to look at what the site was like then you can see how the site was originally and then rebuild it the way it was and often times it's a pretty good site and so you're like in some cases people just do redirects but in other cases they actually have built out sites that they let expire I'm looking on the sales page preview here and I'm seeing it says here's the kind of traffic our students have been able to get with video traffic Genie and I'm seeing that Alex B Freedman posted on March 15th he says hey hello guys today I want to share my results using only vtg traffic method I made 117 dollars in one month I directed my domains to a CPA offer that pays a dollar fifty per registration and he's got a screenshot and for everyone watching you can see that on underneath the interview here I've got more people here another guy says it works guys and visits per day I mean they go on and on and on here again showing that this isn't just you that's doing this it's it's open to anyone who wants to do it I kind of want to do it myself now I usually don't don't I'm not able to do the methods that my my guests are doing because I don't have time just because these interviews to come on a time out of my day yeah yeah but no it's it's definitely exciting that's awesome so okay as far as the software goes it's gonna go out there it's gonna do all that work for you it runs on your Mac or your PC I know that you had some other stuff that you wanted to show us yeah absolutely and I can show you something that I found with the software to show you another example of what it's capable of and as I was doing a search for another product named keyword and I found another Authority channel and in this case it was called real-time remedies and it had a lot of videos that were inside of this channel and many of them were getting consistent views to to their specific product name keywords so that was a cool find and as you can see here - like this was one of them for easel joint pain review and some of them were ranked like this one was ranked number one in google so uh so yeah there's there's a lot of things like that that you can find I mean there's a video in there with 12,000 views ten thousand eleven thousand thirteen thousand and you didn't have to make any of these I think that's the important part here you you didn't do this is pretty lazy yeah it is you have to do the work of course you have to go out there you have to find the domain you have to buy it you have to set it up and think of an offer like with this digestive review thing I would go out there and find some kind of a a weight loss offer or maybe on Clickbank or a CPA offer and send that to it so you have to put in that and never work but all you have to do is if you pay a dollar or ten dollars or whatever you pay for the domain all it has to happen is that you have to make back that initial money and then you're in you're in profit from it absolutely yeah yeah so you see you hit the nail on the head it is a very lazy method and it's just it's at the end so the stages I was explaining before about how you traditionally do video marketing with the product research of the net research and then find those keywords and then trying to rank the video after you created it and everything it's it can be somewhat of a process well in this case the video all that work has been done and if you like the video and there's an expired domain and it gets traffic and you you like the amount of traffic that it gets and you can do all that research beforehand if you're happy with all that you can buy it and most it'll cost as much as ten dollars for an entire year to get all of that traffic redirected to whatever offer that you want to promote very cool is there anything else that you wanted to show us this more questions for you but was there anything else on your screen you wanted to show well this is let's see here and show you this is one of the videos inside of that if you go into the sales page you'll see more examples of different videos using the software that we're able to get different so that's oftentimes what I like to look for you know if you see a trend like this it's really great and then you can narrow it down to see what it gets on a daily basis and there's a lot of targeted traffic that is coming in from those videos then it's a good idea to secure that domain because then you can just redirect that to whatever offer that you want to promote or an opt-in page to build an email list things like that but different screenshots here about income that we've been able to get using this method awesome awesome ok did you want to come back to me I've got some questions about the OTO is for you okay sounds good stuff yeah there you go okay cool so we've seen the software now we've seen the method everything that you've showed us except for the way I think the whale hunter or well fire everything that you showed us is included inside the front end offer I believe yeah that's correct so walk us through if they buy the front end offer what are they gonna get exactly and then walk us through the Oh Chios okay absolutely so with the front end what we have is the software that you saw it will go out and find those specific keywords or whatever you put in there for the search and find those videos that are have broken links that you can be able to go on and get now with the oto we have a really quick sorry so sorry to interrupt you but you all the front end includes the software and it has like training with it as well right yes it has all the training that you can do to do it manually and I also wanted to emphasize that this is just this is to give you the full concept so for some people it's just it's still hard to really grasp you know because they're used to though channel video of marketing methods and stuff like that well this gives you the whole concept about what I did the psychology about it and then also of many many many case studies that you can go in you can see me do things live and go out and find this kind of stuff so like that way you feel like you you're a part of it and that you can do it yourself ok so we get the software and we get the training within the case study is the stuff that you do in there ok all of that first one time and then the first one time offer that is the the software with the unlocked features which include the whale finder and the whale finder is that push button feature that allows you to see exactly what's all associated with that one domain so you can look at multiple videos even Authority channels and sometimes I've even found multiple Authority channels work they just have one domain but they have so much content that you can go in and and get and then you have your link in there so we have that feature we also have a Whois feature because with this software what we're doing is we're looking for broken links that that fit a specific requirement ok what that being said not every single link is going to be available to purchase at that moment because we've done we had about 17 different versions before bringing this to open to buy and we have refined it as much as possible but they're still we want a specific broken link criteria and so there's still some times when you can't buy that domain if that's the case then you can click on the Whois button and the Whois button will tell you when it's going to be expiring so in this case since we're finding broken links those broken links are on domains that are not doing anything at that moment it's most likely that the owner of that domain doesn't know what's going on they may have even forgotten about that domain so when it's when they're you're getting targeted traffic to a domain that doesn't even have anything on it then it may very well expire and so with Whois you'll be able to see exactly when the expiration date is so you can be first in line to get it and you could also I mean if it if it ends up getting renewed and they buy it again you could even afterwards make a note of it approach them and say look I see you've got this domain you're not doing anything with it and if it's if it's getting like them if you see that it's got millions of views on some video or something that's a really like you you've done your research you see that it that it's gonna be worth your while to pick it up you could go out there and offer to buy it from them as well if it was a big one if it was truly a whale yeah yeah absolutely yeah and then along with that we also have a tab called the backlinks tab and that allows you to go in and get backlinks from high high authority sites using a social ladder and it's inside of the software so all you have to do is you go in there and you can even get a free account and just take your your new domain and take the video that's with that new domain and put the video url in there and then start getting targeted traffic and backlinks to boost the rankings of that video even more that's in the first ojio correct okay okay so that's that's the first one is that everything in the first o2u yes that includes all that yeah okay lots of stuff in there that's the first one I think there's one more yes and so then the other one is called in social social base and excuse me social robot and social robot will allow you to get 500 more social bookmarks to get more traffic to your video and to increase the rankings even more the social robot will also come with social base which is another service that you will get inside of social robot that gives you a fresh list of social bookmarks updated on a regular basis so that you'll have 500 plus and sometimes much more to be able to instantly send to that video to boost it up because as we can it was already starting to occur but I was gonna say like you might not know Paul I actually launched that with Joshua was last year and one of the cool things about this is when we were launching and we were using it on new videos well with this you can use it on older videos that are already established give them a little bit of link juice and just that little bit of link juice is gonna go a longer way with them they've already been there for a while it's gonna be easier in my opinion to those to rank a little higher yeah absolutely yeah yeah because sometimes we still see videos that get a lot of traffic but might need a little bit of boost with social bookmarks to get them to rank higher in Google and get even more traffic Paul thank you so much for coming on the show today is there anything else anything that we've missed anything that you wanted to mention any last words before we wrap it up well uh we I think we've covered a lot one thing I do want to leave you with is to just take massive imperfect Paint by Numbers: Using Data to Produce Great Content

It's not every day that I write about content. To be honest, it's probably a once-a-year kind of thing. I will readily admit that I'm a "links are king" kind of SEO, and have been since starting in this industry more than a decade ago. However, I do look over the fence from time to time to see if the grass is greener and, on occasion, I actually like what I see. Prior to joining Moz, I was a consultant at an agency like many of you reading this blog post. More often than not, one of the key concerns of my clients was what to write about. It seems that webmasters and business owners alike can easily acquire writer's block after trudging through the uninspiring task of turning a list of keywords into website copy. So where do you look when you have run out of words
Numbers.
Alright, stick with me here. I imagine for some of you the idea of poring over numbers to remedy writer's block would be like trying to stop a headache with a brick. It's adding insult to injury. What I hope to show you in the next couple of paragraphs is how data can be an incredible source of inspiration in writing, especially if you can hit a few key principles: expose, relate, surprise, and share.
Expose
Chances are your business or website generates some amount of unique, first party data that you can expose to the world. It might be from analytics, your rank tracker like Moz, or from raw user data if you operate a forum. I'll give you examples of how you might tap into these resources (especially when they don't seem obvious or plenteous) but let's start with a canonical example of one great use of first-party data in an industry that seems directly at odds with — dating.
The thought of quantifying and analyzing our love lives seems like an oxymoron of sorts. However, one of the most successful uses of data for content has been produced by the team at OK Cupid, whose "data"-tagged blog posts have earned thousands of solid backlinks and enviable traffic. The team at OK Cupid accomplishes this by tapping their huge resource for unique data, generated by their user base. Let's look at one quick example: Congrats Graduates: No One Gives a Sh*t.
The blog post is fairly straightforward (and not particularly long) but it used unique data that isn't really available to the average person. Because OK Cupid is in a privileged position, they can provide this kind of insight to their audience at large.
But maybe you don't have a million customers with profiles on your site; where can you look for first party data? Well, here are a couple of ideas of the types of data your company or organization might have which can easily be turned into interesting content:
Google Analytics, Search Console data and Adwords data: Do you see trends around holidays that are interesting? Perhaps you notice that more people search for certain keywords at certain times. This could be even more interesting if there's a local holiday (like a festival or event) that makes your data unique from the rest of the country.
Sales data: When do your sales go up or down? Do they coincide with events? Or do they happen to coincide with completely different types of keywords? Try using Google Correlate, which will identify keywords that follow the same patterns as your data.
Survey data: Use your sales or lead history to run surveys and generate insightful content.
A clothing store could compare responses to questions about personality by the colors of clothing that people purchase (Potential headline: Is It True What They Say About Red?)
A car parts store could compare the size of certain accessories to favorite sports (Potential headline: Big Trucks and Big Hits)
An insurance provider could compare the type of insurance requested vs. the level of education (Potential headline: What Smart People Do Differently with Insurance)
There are probably tons more sources of unique, first-party data that you or your business have generated over the years which can be turned into great content. If you dig through the data long enough, you'll hit pay dirt.
Relate
Data is foreign. It's a language almost no one speaks in their day-to-day conversations, a notation meant for machines. This consideration requires that we make data immediately relatable to our readers. We shouldn't just ask "What does the data say?", but instead "What does the data say to me?" How we make data relatable is simple — organize your data by how people identify themselves. This can be geographic, economic, biological, social, or cultural distinctions with which we regularly categorize ourselves.
Many of the best examples of this kind of strategy involve geography (perhaps because everyone lives somewhere, and it's pretty non-controversial to make generic claims about one location or another). Take a look at a map of your country and try not to look first towards where you live. I'm a North Carolinian, and I almost immediately find myself interested in anything that compares my state to others.
So maybe you aren't OK Cupid with millions of users and you can't find unique data to share — don't worry, there's still hope. The example below is a rather ingenious method of using Google Adwords data to build a geographical story that's relatable to any potential customer in the United States. The webmasters at Opulent used state-level Keyword Planner to visualize popularity across the country in a piece they call the "State of Style."
When I found this on Reddit's DataIsBeautiful (where most of these examples come from), I immediately checked to see what performed best in North Carolina. I honestly couldn't care less about popular fashion or jewelry brands, but my interest in North Carolina eclipsed that lack of interest. Geography-based data visualization has produced successful content related to in sports, politics, beer, and even knitting.
If you walk away with any practical ideas from this post, I think this example has got to be it. Fire up an Adwords campaign and find out how consumer demand breaks down in your industry at a state-by-state level. Are you a marketer and want to attract clients in a particular sector? Here's your chance to write a whitepaper on national demand. If you're a local business, you can target Google Keyword Planner to your city and compare it to other cities around the country.
Surprise
Perhaps the greatest opportunity with data-focused content is the chance to truly surprise your reader. There's something exciting about learning an interesting fact (who hasn't seen one of these lying around and didn't pick it up?). So, how do you make your data "pop?" How do you make numbers fascinating?
Perspective.
Let's start with a simple statistic:
The cost of ending polio between 2013 and 2018 is $5.5 Billion Dollars.
How does that number feel to you? Does it feel big or little? Is it interesting on its own? Probably not, let's try and spice it up a bit.
$5.5 billion dollars doesn't seem that much when you realize people spend that amount on iPhones every 2 weeks. We could rid the world of polio for that much! Or, what if we present it like this...
In this light, it seems almost insane to spend that much money preventing just a couple more polio cases relative to the huge gains we could make on malaria. Of course, the statistics don't tell the full story. Polio is in the end-stages of eradication where the cost-per-case is much higher, and as malaria is attacked, it too will see cost-per-case increase. But the point remains the same: by giving the polio numbers some sort of context, some sort of forced perspective, we make the data far more intriguing and appealing.
So how would this work with content for your own site? Let's look at an example from BestPlay.co, which wrote a piece on Board Games are Getting Worse. Board games aren't a data-centric industry, but that doesn't keep them from producing awesome content with data. Here's a generic graph they provide in the piece which shows off average board game ratings.
There really isn't much to see here. There's nothing intrinsically shocking about the data as we look at it. So how do they add perspective to make their point and give the user intrigue? Simple — apply a historical perspective.
With this historical perspective, we can see board game scores getting better and better up until 2012, when they began to take a dive — the first multi-year dive in their recorded history. To draw users in, you use comparison to provide surprising perspectives.

This final method is the one that I think is most overlooked. Once you've created your fancy piece of content, let your audience do some leg work for you by releasing the data set. There's an entire community of the Internet just looking for great data sets which could take advantage of your data and cite your content in their own publications. You can find everything from All of Donald Trump's Tweets to Everything Lost at TSA to Hand-drawn Pictures of Pineapples. While there is a good chance your data set won't ever be used, it can pick up a couple of extra links in the event that it does.
Putting it all together
What happens when a webmaster combines these types of methods — exposing unique data, making it relatable and surprising, even for a topic that seems averse to data? You get something like this: Jeans vs. Leggings.

They compared user interest in jeans to give perspective to the growth of demand for leggings:
Slice.com reveals their first-party data to make interesting, data-driven content that ultimately scores them links from sites like In Style Magazine, Shape.com, and the NY Post. Looking at fashion through the lens of data meant great traffic and great shares.
How do I get started?
Get down and dirty with the data. Don't wait until you end up with a nice report in your hand, but start slicing and dicing things looking for interesting patterns or results. You can start with the data you already have: Google Analytics, Google Search Console, Google Adwords, and, if you're a Moz customer, even your rank tracking data or keyword research data. If none of these avenues work, dig through the amazing data resources found on Reddit or WebHose. Look for a story in the numbers by relating the data to your audience and making comparisons to provide perspective. It isn't a foolproof formula, but it is pretty close. The right slice of data will cut straight through writer's block.

Paint by Numbers: Using Data to Produce Great Content
Posted by rjonesx. It’s not every day that I write about content. To be honest, it’s probably a once-a-year kind of thing. I will readily admit that I’m a “links are king” kind of SEO, and have been since starting in this industry more than a decade ago. However, I do look over the fence from time to time to see if the grass is greener and, on occasion, I actually like what I see. Prior to joining Moz, I was a consultant at an agency like many of you reading this blog post. More often than not, one of the key concerns of my clients was what to write about. It seems that webmasters and business owners alike can easily acquire writer’s block after trudging through the uninspiring task of turning a list of keywords into website copy. So where do you look when you have run out of words
Numbers.
Alright, stick with me here. I imagine for some of you the idea of poring over numbers to remedy writer’s block would be like trying to stop a headache with a brick. It’s adding insult to injury. What I hope to show you in the next couple of paragraphs is how data can be an incredible source of inspiration in writing, especially if you can hit a few key principles: expose, relate, surprise, and share.
Expose Chances are your business or website generates some amount of unique, first party data that you can expose to the world. It might be from analytics, your rank tracker like Moz, or from raw user data if you operate a forum. I’ll give you examples of how you might tap into these resources (especially when they don’t seem obvious or plenteous) but let’s start with a canonical example of one great use of first-party data in an industry that seems directly at odds with — dating.
The thought of quantifying and analyzing our love lives seems like an oxymoron of sorts. However, one of the most successful uses of data for content has been produced by the team at OK Cupid, whose “data”-tagged blog posts have earned thousands of solid backlinks and enviable traffic. The team at OK Cupid accomplishes this by tapping their huge resource for unique data, generated by their user base. Let’s look at one quick example: Congrats Graduates: No One Gives a Sh*t .
The blog post is fairly straightforward (and not particularly long) but it used unique data that isn’t really available to the average person. Because OK Cupid is in a privileged position, they can provide this kind of insight to their audience at large.
But maybe you don’t have a million customers with profiles on your site; where can you look for first party data? Well, here are a couple of ideas of the types of data your company or organization might have which can easily be turned into interesting content:
Google Analytics, Search Console data and Adwords data: Do you see trends around holidays that are interesting? Perhaps you notice that more people search for certain keywords at certain times. This could be even more interesting if there’s a local holiday (like a festival or event) that makes your data unique from the rest of the country.
Sales data: When do your sales go up or down? Do they coincide with events? Or do they happen to coincide with completely different types of keywords? Try using Google Correlate , which will identify keywords that follow the same patterns as your data.
Survey data: Use your sales or lead history to run surveys and generate insightful content.
A clothing store could compare responses to questions about personality by the colors of clothing that people purchase (Potential headline: Is It True What They Say About Red?)
A car parts store could compare the size of certain accessories to favorite sports (Potential headline: Big Trucks and Big Hits)
An insurance provider could compare the type of insurance requested vs. the level of education (Potential headline: What Smart People Do Differently with Insurance)
There are probably tons more sources of unique, first-party data that you or your business have generated over the years which can be turned into great content. If you dig through the data long enough, you’ll hit pay dirt.
Relate Data is foreign. It’s a language almost no one speaks in their day-to-day conversations, a notation meant for machines. This consideration requires that we make data immediately relatable to our readers. We shouldn’t just ask “What does the data say?”, but instead “What does the data say to me?” How we make data relatable is simple — organize your data by how people identify themselves. This can be geographic, economic, biological, social, or cultural distinctions with which we regularly categorize ourselves.
Many of the best examples of this kind of strategy involve geography (perhaps because everyone lives somewhere, and it’s pretty non-controversial to make generic claims about one location or another). Take a look at a map of your country and try not to look first towards where you live. I’m a North Carolinian, and I almost immediately find myself interested in anything that compares my state to others.
So maybe you aren’t OK Cupid with millions of users and you can’t find unique data to share — don’t worry, there’s still hope. The example below is a rather ingenious method of using Google Adwords data to build a geographical story that’s relatable to any potential customer in the United States. The webmasters at Opulent used state-level Keyword Planner to visualize popularity across the country in a piece they call the “ State of Style. “
When I found this on Reddit’s DataIsBeautiful (where most of these examples come from), I immediately checked to see what performed best in North Carolina. I honestly couldn’t care less about popular fashion or jewelry brands, but my interest in North Carolina eclipsed that lack of interest. Geography-based data visualization has produced successful content related to in sports , politics , beer , and even knitting .
If you walk away with any practical ideas from this post, I think this example has got to be it. Fire up an Adwords campaign and find out how consumer demand breaks down in your industry at a state-by-state level. Are you a marketer and want to attract clients in a particular sector? Here’s your chance to write a whitepaper on national demand. If you’re a local business, you can target Google Keyword Planner to your city and compare it to other cities around the country.
Surprise Perhaps the greatest opportunity with data-focused content is the chance to truly surprise your reader. There’s something exciting about learning an interesting fact ( who hasn’t seen one of these lying around and didn’t pick it up? ). So, how do you make your data “pop?” How do you make numbers fascinating? Perspective.
Let’s start with a simple statistic:
The cost of ending polio between 2013 and 2018 is
$5.5 Billion Dollars .
How does that number feel to you? Does it feel big or little? Is it interesting on its own? Probably not, let’s try and spice it up a bit.
$5.5 billion dollars doesn’t seem that much when you realize people spend that amount on iPhones every 2 weeks. We could rid the world of polio for that much! Or, what if we present it like this...
In this light, it seems almost insane to spend that much money preventing just a couple more polio cases relative to the huge gains we could make on malaria. Of course, the statistics don’t tell the full story. Polio is in the end-stages of eradication where the cost-per-case is much higher, and as malaria is attacked, it too will see cost-per-case increase. But the point remains the same: by giving the polio numbers some sort of context, some sort of forced perspective, we make the data far more intriguing and appealing.
So how would this work with content for your own site? Let’s look at an example from BestPlay.co , which wrote a piece on Board Games are Getting Worse . Board games aren’t a data-centric industry, but that doesn’t keep them from producing awesome content with data. Here’s a generic graph they provide in the piece which shows off average board game ratings.
There really isn’t much to see here. There’s nothing intrinsically shocking about the data as we look at it. So how do they add perspective to make their point and give the user intrigue? Simple — apply a historical perspective.
With this historical perspective, we can see board game scores getting better and better up until 2012, when they began to take a dive — the first multi-year dive in their recorded history. To draw users in, you use comparison to provide surprising perspectives.
Share This final method is the one that I think is most overlooked. Once you’ve created your fancy piece of content, let your audience do some leg work for you by releasing the data set. There’s an entire community of the Internet just looking for great data sets which could take advantage of your data and cite your content in their own publications. You can find everything from All of Donald Trump’s Tweets to Everything Lost at TSA to Hand-drawn Pictures of Pineapples . While there is a good chance your data set won’t ever be used, it can pick up a couple of extra links in the event that it does.
Putting it all together What happens when a webmaster combines these types of methods — exposing unique data, making it relatable and surprising, even for a topic that seems averse to data? You get something like this: Jeans vs. Leggings.

They compared user interest in jeans to give perspective to the growth of demand for leggings:
Slice.com reveals their first-party data to make interesting, data-driven content that ultimately scores them links from sites like In Style Magazine, Shape.com, and the NY Post. Looking at fashion through the lens of data meant great traffic and great shares.
How do I get started? Get down and dirty with the data. Don’t wait until you end up with a nice report in your hand, but start slicing and dicing things looking for interesting patterns or results. You can start with the data you already have: Google Analytics , Google Search Console , Google Adwords , and, if you’re a Moz customer, even your rank tracking data or keyword research data . If none of these avenues work, dig through the amazing data resources found on Reddit or WebHose . Look for a story in the numbers by relating the data to your audience and making comparisons to provide perspective. It isn’t a foolproof formula, but it is pretty close. The right slice of data will cut straight through writer’s block.

How to Do a Keyword-Driven Content Audit (with Keyword Explorer)

As content marketers, we frequently suffer from What Have You Done For Me Lately Syndrome (WHYDFMLS). As soon as we're done with one piece of content, we're on to the next one, barely stopping to check analytics for a couple of days. Analytics themselves are to blame, in part. Our default window into traffic-based analytics is somewhere in the realm of 30 days, leading us to neglect older content that's still performing well but may not be competing day-to-day with the latest and greatest.
I'm a big believer in digging back into your hidden gems and looking for content that's still performing but may be due for an update, rewrite, or even just testing a better title/headline. How do we find this content, which is often buried in our this-week-focused analytics?
Let's think like SEOs. One approach is to find older content that's still ranking for a solid number of keywords, but may be out of date or under-performing. This is content that's still driving traffic, but we may be overlooking. We don't have to fight an uphill battle to get it ranking – we just have to better tap the potential this content is already demonstrating.
Step 0 – The "Exact Page" filter
Before we begin, I'm going to jump to the end. You may know that we recently launched Keywords By Site in Keyword Explorer, which allows you to peer into a keyword "universe" of millions of searches to see how a given domain is ranking. What you may not know is that you can also look up a specific page with the "Exact Page" filter. Go to the Keyword Explorer home page, and it's the last entry in the pull-down:

Click the search (magnifying glass) button and you'll get back something like this:
Even for my small blog, I've got a healthy list of keywords here, and some ranking in the top 50 that have solid volume. I also know that this post still gets decent traffic, even though it was written in 2009. If I were still active in the usability space, this would be a prime candidate for a rewrite, and I'd know exactly what keywords to target.
This is all well and good when you have an exact page in mind, but how do you audit an entire site or blog when you don't know what's performing for you? I'm going to outline a 6-step process below.
Step 1 – Get all rankings
Let's say I want to find some buried content treasure right here on the Moz Blog. In the Keyword Explorer menu, I'll select "root domain" and enter our root domain, "moz.com":
I'll get a similar report as in Step 0. Under "Top Ranking Keywords", I'm going to select "See all ranking keywords". In this case, I get back a table of more than 53,000 keywords that moz.com currently ranks
for. Not too shabby. These are not just keywords I actively track, but all of the keywords moz.com ranks for in Keyword Explorer's "universe" of roughly 40 million keywords.
Step 2 – Export keywords
So, how does a keyword list help us to better understand our content? Above the keyword table, you'll see two options, "Export CSV" and "Add to...":
I'm going to choose the export – we're going to want the whole, beautiful mess for this job. What I'll get back is a file with every keyword and the following columns:
Keyword
Minimum Volume
Maximum Volume
Keyword Difficulty
Top Rank
Top Ranking URL
That last column is the important one. The export contains the top ranking URL for moz.com for each of the keywords (note: your maximum export size does vary with your Moz Pro membership level). This is where we can start forging the content connection.
Step 3 – Filter pages
I ended up with 30K keyword/URL pairings in the CSV. So that the viewers at home can follow along, I'm going to do the next few steps in Google Sheets. The first thing I want to do is filter out just what I'm interested in. In the "Data" menu, select "Filter". You'll see green arrows appear next to each column header. Click on the one next to "Top Ranking URL" (the last column). I'm going to use "Filter by condition" with "Text contains" and isolate all ranking URLs with "/blog/" in them:
This leaves me with 13,266 keyword/URL pairings. Personally, I like to copy and paste the filtered data to a new worksheet, just because working with filtered data tends to be a bit unpredictable. So, now I've got a separate worksheet (named "Filtered") with just the keywords where the Moz blog ranks.
Step 4 – Pivot pages
If you haven't used pivot tables, I'd strongly encourage you to check them out. Annie Cushing has a great Excel tutorial on pivot tables, and I'll walk you through a couple of basics in Google Sheets. Generally, you use pivot tables when you want to group data and calculate statistics on those groups very quickly. In this case, what I want to do is group all of the matching URLs in my data set and get the counts. In other words, how many keywords is each unique blog post ranking on?
After selecting all of the data on that new "Filtered" tab, click the "Data" menu again, and then "Pivot tables..." at the bottom. This opens up a new sheet with a blank table. On the right are some slightly cryptic options. Under "Rows", I'm going to add "Top Ranking URL". This tells Google Sheets that each row in the pivot table should be a unique (grouped) URL from the top ranking URLs. Next, I'll select the "Values"::
The COUNTA() function just tells Google Sheets to return the total count for each URL (for some reason, COUNT() only works on numeric values). As a bonus, I've also selected the SUM() of Max Volume. This will total up the volume for all of the ranking keywords in our data set for each URL.
Pivot table results can be a bit hard to work with (in both Excel and Google Sheets), so I'm going to copy and paste the data (as values only) into a new sheet called "Audit".
Step 5 – Find candidates
Let's get to the good stuff. When I group the URLs, I'm left with 1,604 unique blog posts in this particular data set. I can easily sort by posts ranking for the most keywords or posts with the most potential search volume (under "Data" / "Sort range"). I'm going to stick to raw keyword count. Here's just a sample:
Obviously, there's a ton here to dig into, but right away I noticed that two of the posts in the top 10 seemed to have some connection to graphics and/or image search. This stood out, because it's not a topic we write about a lot. Turns out the first one is a video from May 2017, so not a great candidate for an update. The second, however (highlighted), is a tools post from early 2013. This post was surprisingly popular, and given how many new tools have come out in the past 4-1/2 years, is a perfect candidate to rewrite.

Step 6 – Back to Step 0
Remember that "Exact URL" option I talked about at the beginning of this post? Well, now I've got a URL to plug back into that feature and learn more about. Our data dump showed 170 ranking keywords, but when I target that exact URL, I'm likely to get even more data. Here's just a sample:
Sure enough, I get almost double that count (348) with an exact URL search, and now I have an entire treasure trove to sort through. I sorted by volume (descending) here, just to get a sense of some of the more interesting keywords. I can, of course, repeat Step 6 with any of the URLs from Step 5 until I narrow down my best prospects.
Next steps (for the adventurous)
If I were going to rewrite the post I found, I'd want to make sure that I'm targeting two sets of keywords: (1) the important keywords I currently rank highly on (don't want to lose that traffic) and (2) higher volume keywords I have the potential to rank on if I target them better. I might target, for example, a few choice keywords where I currently rank in the top 20 results and have a Page Authority that's better than (or, at least, not too far from) the listed Keyword Difficulty.
Of course, you can also feed any of these keywords back into Keyword Explorer for more suggestions. Ideally, you're looking for a handful of solid keyword concepts to target. The goal isn't to stuff every variation into your rewritten post. The goal is to create a better, newer, more useful post that also happens to intelligently incorporate highly relevant keywords.

How to Do a Keyword-Driven Content Audit (with Keyword Explorer)

As content marketers, we frequently suffer from What Have You Done For Me Lately Syndrome (WHYDFMLS). As soon as we're done with one piece of content, we're on to the next one, barely stopping to check analytics for a couple of days. Analytics themselves are to blame, in part. Our default window into traffic-based analytics is somewhere in the realm of 30 days, leading us to neglect older content that's still performing well but may not be competing day-to-day with the latest and greatest.
I'm a big believer in digging back into your hidden gems and looking for content that's still performing but may be due for an update, rewrite, or even just testing a better title/headline. How do we find this content, which is often buried in our this-week-focused analytics?
Let's think like SEOs. One approach is to find older content that's still ranking for a solid number of keywords, but may be out of date or under-performing. This is content that's still driving traffic, but we may be overlooking. We don't have to fight an uphill battle to get it ranking – we just have to better tap the potential this content is already demonstrating.
Step 0 – The "Exact Page" filter
Before we begin, I'm going to jump to the end. You may know that we recently launched Keywords By Site in Keyword Explorer, which allows you to peer into a keyword "universe" of millions of searches to see how a given domain is ranking. What you may not know is that you can also look up a specific page with the "Exact Page" filter. Go to the Keyword Explorer home page, and it's the last entry in the pull-down:

Click the search (magnifying glass) button and you'll get back something like this:
Even for my small blog, I've got a healthy list of keywords here, and some ranking in the top 50 that have solid volume. I also know that this post still gets decent traffic, even though it was written in 2009. If I were still active in the usability space, this would be a prime candidate for a rewrite, and I'd know exactly what keywords to target.
This is all well and good when you have an exact page in mind, but how do you audit an entire site or blog when you don't know what's performing for you? I'm going to outline a 6-step process below.
Step 1 – Get all rankings
Let's say I want to find some buried content treasure right here on the Moz Blog. In the Keyword Explorer menu, I'll select "root domain" and enter our root domain, "moz.com":
I'll get a similar report as in Step 0. Under "Top Ranking Keywords", I'm going to select "See all ranking keywords". In this case, I get back a table of more than 53,000 keywords that moz.com currently ranks
for. Not too shabby. These are not just keywords I actively track, but all of the keywords moz.com ranks for in Keyword Explorer's "universe" of roughly 40 million keywords.
Step 2 – Export keywords
So, how does a keyword list help us to better understand our content? Above the keyword table, you'll see two options, "Export CSV" and "Add to...":
I'm going to choose the export – we're going to want the whole, beautiful mess for this job. What I'll get back is a file with every keyword and the following columns:
Keyword
Minimum Volume
Maximum Volume
Keyword Difficulty
Top Rank
Top Ranking URL
That last column is the important one. The export contains the top ranking URL for moz.com for each of the keywords (note: your maximum export size does vary with your Moz Pro membership level). This is where we can start forging the content connection.
Step 3 – Filter pages
I ended up with 30K keyword/URL pairings in the CSV. So that the viewers at home can follow along, I'm going to do the next few steps in Google Sheets. The first thing I want to do is filter out just what I'm interested in. In the "Data" menu, select "Filter". You'll see green arrows appear next to each column header. Click on the one next to "Top Ranking URL" (the last column). I'm going to use "Filter by condition" with "Text contains" and isolate all ranking URLs with "/blog/" in them:
This leaves me with 13,266 keyword/URL pairings. Personally, I like to copy and paste the filtered data to a new worksheet, just because working with filtered data tends to be a bit unpredictable. So, now I've got a separate worksheet (named "Filtered") with just the keywords where the Moz blog ranks.
Step 4 – Pivot pages
If you haven't used pivot tables, I'd strongly encourage you to check them out. Annie Cushing has a great Excel tutorial on pivot tables, and I'll walk you through a couple of basics in Google Sheets. Generally, you use pivot tables when you want to group data and calculate statistics on those groups very quickly. In this case, what I want to do is group all of the matching URLs in my data set and get the counts. In other words, how many keywords is each unique blog post ranking on?
After selecting all of the data on that new "Filtered" tab, click the "Data" menu again, and then "Pivot tables..." at the bottom. This opens up a new sheet with a blank table. On the right are some slightly cryptic options. Under "Rows", I'm going to add "Top Ranking URL". This tells Google Sheets that each row in the pivot table should be a unique (grouped) URL from the top ranking URLs. Next, I'll select the "Values"::
The COUNTA() function just tells Google Sheets to return the total count for each URL (for some reason, COUNT() only works on numeric values). As a bonus, I've also selected the SUM() of Max Volume. This will total up the volume for all of the ranking keywords in our data set for each URL.
Pivot table results can be a bit hard to work with (in both Excel and Google Sheets), so I'm going to copy and paste the data (as values only) into a new sheet called "Audit".
Step 5 – Find candidates
Let's get to the good stuff. When I group the URLs, I'm left with 1,604 unique blog posts in this particular data set. I can easily sort by posts ranking for the most keywords or posts with the most potential search volume (under "Data" / "Sort range"). I'm going to stick to raw keyword count. Here's just a sample:
Obviously, there's a ton here to dig into, but right away I noticed that two of the posts in the top 10 seemed to have some connection to graphics and/or image search. This stood out, because it's not a topic we write about a lot. Turns out the first one is a video from May 2017, so not a great candidate for an update. The second, however (highlighted), is a tools post from early 2013. This post was surprisingly popular, and given how many new tools have come out in the past 4-1/2 years, is a perfect candidate to rewrite.

Step 6 – Back to Step 0
Remember that "Exact URL" option I talked about at the beginning of this post? Well, now I've got a URL to plug back into that feature and learn more about. Our data dump showed 170 ranking keywords, but when I target that exact URL, I'm likely to get even more data. Here's just a sample:
Sure enough, I get almost double that count (348) with an exact URL search, and now I have an entire treasure trove to sort through. I sorted by volume (descending) here, just to get a sense of some of the more interesting keywords. I can, of course, repeat Step 6 with any of the URLs from Step 5 until I narrow down my best prospects.
Next steps (for the adventurous)
If I were going to rewrite the post I found, I'd want to make sure that I'm targeting two sets of keywords: (1) the important keywords I currently rank highly on (don't want to lose that traffic) and (2) higher volume keywords I have the potential to rank on if I target them better. I might target, for example, a few choice keywords where I currently rank in the top 20 results and have a Page Authority that's better than (or, at least, not too far from) the listed Keyword Difficulty.
Of course, you can also feed any of these keywords back into Keyword Explorer for more suggestions. Ideally, you're looking for a handful of solid keyword concepts to target. The goal isn't to stuff every variation into your rewritten post. The goal is to create a better, newer, more useful post that also happens to intelligently incorporate highly relevant keywords.
