the psychological horror created by Hasbroâs desire to sell more toys rather than honour the desires of the original creator resulting in an immortal alicorn princess of friendship doomed to watch her friends grow old and die without her is so interesting to me. by trying to cater to children more you have accidentally created a reality in which death of the main characters friends as she lives on for centuries is not just implied but confirmed. idk itâs fascinating to think about
#EVEN MORESO BY G5#with discord in the comics clearly descended into misery without fluttershy#their absence speaks volumes#and I know kids are able to handle mature topics like death earlier than we often assume#but still itâs so strange to think about death of the main characters being canon and confirmed in the colourful pony cartoon#wild#mlp#major character death#character death#DONT GET ME WRONG I LOVED THE LAST EPISODE SO MUCH#itâs just !!!!! I wish twilight was growing old alongside them#I donât like how much she looks like celestia too#sheâs grown so apart from her roots it feels like it undoes much of her growth#at the same time itâs the best ending we couldâve hoped for all things considered#I JUST MISS HER ICONIC FRINGE

Can I get more f that Kennyâs physiology with his alter egos? Iâm rlly interested in that
(assuming this means psychology, as a follow up to this post)
iâve put it off cuz iâve been busy with other stuff but iâm really glad i got this ask cuz i love kenny and I love thinking about them in the context of their two alter egos!
CW: discussion of child abuse and neglect, including inexplicit discussion of child sexuality. also a lot of discussion of The Whole Kenny Death Thing. also spoilers for the stick of truth if you havenât played it!
kennyâs been treated a lot more seriously in recent seasons, with a shift in character to be a lot more mature as well, and itâs a development that makes a lot of sense in the context of âthe characters have undergone A Lot and itâs really shaped their personalities because theyâre at a stage when their brain is still very soft and malleable and susceptible to trauma.â
the addition of karen in âthe poor kidâ seems to have shaken up the depiction of the mccormicks a lot. in earlier seasons, kenny was more passive about his home situation, or at least went out of his way to ignore them, (like in âbest friends foreverâ when he plays on his PSP and leaves the house while his parents fight). there are early scenes where he does have some responsibility to his family (i.e. trying to win a can of food for them in âstarvin marvinâ) but usually heâs just depicted as a kid trying to live through a tough situation. though his âwilling to do anything for money even if itâs deeply upsetting, depraved, or outright deadlyâ character trait from âfat campâ kind of tracks with this understanding that he prioritizes financial security over his personal well-being.Â
however, ever since karen was added to the show, kennyâs been depicted as a much more responsible and often even tragic figure. his parents are too caught up in their own shit to address their childrenâs emotional needs, and kevin sadly gets caught up in their violence as well in âthe poor kidâ (heâs also vaguely implied to be developmentally disabled in the few scenes he speaks up but thatâs mostly speculation). because of this, kenny ends up being karenâs main caretaker - holding her close when sheâs distressed at losing her parents, buying her a doll, etc.Â
kennyâs situation is a textbook example of parentification. he ends up taking care of karen, at least emotionally, because his parents and brother are unable to do so. he also becomes the breadwinner in âthe city part of townâ as soon as he gets the chance. this is a really unhealthy scenario that a lot of children in poverty, especially older siblings, see themselves in. it can result in the child not knowing their true place in a family that takes them for granted, and thus not considering their own needs and/or feeling shame if they need help because theyâre so used to putting everybody before them. i think this tracks with kenny being âthe quiet oneâ and rarely asking for anything.Â
thatâs not even getting into the constant death and the fact he spent so much of his life not even understanding why he was doomed to constantly die in horrible painful ways, and for nobody else to remember that he even died to begin with. (kind of symbolic of the neglected child, huh?)Â
this brings us to mysterion and princess kenny. in both the superhero game and the fantasy game, youâll notice kenny is the one who tends to get the most involved, with the only exception being possibly cartman, who could be the topic of a whole other essay on identity issues. mysterion is the one superhero with a real power who exists outside of their superhero game (besides the kewn, whose superhero persona is entirely self-motivated anyway), and princess kenny gets so defensive of her identity that she betrays her friends in both the trilogy and the game. kenny also talks about lady mccormick in the third person in the first black friday episode, and i donât know if any other characters speak about their personas in that way. so kenny intentionally places more distance between his personas and himself than the other kids do with their personas.Â
therefore, i see mysterion and princess kenny as how kenny copes with his deeply repressed psychological issues. itâs a way to compartmentalize his feelings towards his constant suffering and the burden his family inadvertently placed on him by developing these two identities. one embraces his role as caretaker to the degree of becoming a superhero, and the other rejects it in favor of being entirely doted upon. (some people have read the prominence of roles as signs of a dissociative disorder, and i can see that with this context, but i donât know if itâs really a perfect fit for any specific disorder, especially when thereâs little information on kennyâs consciousness when it comes to these personas.)
mysterion is more obviously a tool for kenny to express his discontent with his town. in his first appearance, he states, âi could no longer sit by and watch as my city became a cesspool of crime,â which tracks with his earlier characterization as reluctantly accepting his familyâs poverty despite constantly suffering. (plus iâm pretty sure several of kennyâs deaths were the result of crimes.) he refuses to be unmasked because he âwould stop being a symbol,â and only does so in order to quell the unrest that his mystery has provoked. that "symbol" wording suggests that mysterion is an extreme version of kenny's self-sacrificing lifestyle to the point where he defines himself as a symbol of justice and hope, not a person. kenny himself is also pretty quiet and secretive, but more because nobody cares about him and heâs kind of afraid of getting killed any second. mysterionâs secret persona is something bold, powerful, and masculine. he is physically adept in a way we donât see kenny behave, and much more reasonable and cautious about whatâs best for him and humanity. (a good visual of this to contrast with kenny is the âmysterion re-risingâ animation in the fractured but whole, where he consciously rejects the chance to go to the heaven full of naked women that kenny loves because he has to return to battle.)
mysterion is also a way for kenny to reclaim his "curseâ and use it for good. as mysterion, he uses death (albeit reluctantly) to get out of tough situations and save his friends. in video games like fractured but whole and phone destroyer, mysterionâs ability to exist as a ghost and revive himself is a gameplay mechanic. this self-sacrificial personality trait has shown up in earlier seasons, and he kills himself for the good of the community/world/etc in âcartmanâs mom is still a dirty slut,â the movie, and âjewbilee.â but heâs not nearly as interested in world issues unless heâs under pressure to care. (for example: he does join the workersâ strike in âbike parade,â but heâs not very passionate about it and doesnât even care about the issue until his dad takes him to a union meeting.) kennyâs good with solving short-term issues while mysterion worries about the deeper, long-term problems with the town.Â
this brings us to mysterion and the mccormicks. when we see mysterionâs interactions with karen, we see how mysterion represents kennyâs responsibilities towards her. mysterion is able to offer karen elaborate, heartfelt emotional support, and guarantee that heâll always be there for her. he also beats up a girl who bullies her and threatens anybody else who thinks about hurting her - more on that aggressive instinct down below. while mysterionâs identity is known to his friends and the rest of the town, itâs not known to karen, who sees him as a guardian angel. presumably, this is so mysterion can remain a symbol of hope to her, just like he is to the town, and so karen feels like thereâs people in the world who care about her besides her brother. however, this does backfire in the fractured but whole DLC where she laments how her brother doesnât seem to spend time with her, which embarrasses mysterion as he promises to tell him to be there for her more often. this implies that kenny gets so wrapped up in being mysterion that he forgets that he has a duty to karen as kenny as well, further indicating that mysterion is a way to cope with the tragic responsibility of caring for a sibling not much younger than he is.
during the superhero trilogy, kenny also uses mysterion to question his parents about their cult meetings, something that shook him so badly when he learned about it that he broke character. mysterion also told his parents to be nicer to the kids, not beat each other up, pay their kids allowances, and not smoke. it seems that mysterion is able to approach kennyâs parents about serious issues while kenny himself mostly stays out of their business - possibly out of fear? (kennyâs more confrontational in later seasons, though - flipping off his dad in âbike parade,â for example.)
on a similar note, mysterion is way more openly angry and violent than kenny is, especially when it comes to the death curse, which he openly complains about in a way kenny himself never did. compare kenny complaining about stan ignoring his deaths in âcherokee hair tampons,â which only gets further ignored, and mysterion complaining about it in graphic detail in âcoon vs coon and friends,â even killing himself in front of his friends, and understandably scaring the shit out of them. mysterion also gets really protective of karen, violently so, as seen with the girl he beats up in âthe poor kidâ and his distrust when the vampires befriend her in the âfrom dusk til casa bonitaâ DLC. such a mysterion is way more passionate and loud about justice and direct action while kenny is more resigned, and most of his good deeds are unknown to the public. if kenny has embraced this caretaker role, it makes sense that he vents his repressed anger through mysterion, especially if you take it in the context of dissociation - kenny canât handle dwelling on his shitty life all the time, so mysterion holds that anger and finds a way to cope with it by trying to fix everything around them, including kennyâs home life.Â
princess kenny is very opposite mysterion in many ways. most obviously, sheâs a girl. kennyâs relationship with gender is something i think about a lot in light of PK. âtweek vs craigâ depicted him as the only boy in home ec, and he was thrilled because it was the safe alternative to the deadly shop class. i think that, regardless of your headcanon for kennyâs gender (i personally see them as feminine nonbinary - iâm mostly using âheâ pronouns in this essay strictly for recognitionâs sake and because iâm mostly talking about the showâs depiction of kenny), he sees femininity as safe and comforting, but nevertheless very powerful. (remember that his mother, while not super feminine, is a very outspoken and aggressive woman who calls stuart out on his shit constantly.) and whatâs a better combination of femininity and power than a magical girl?Â
also one thing i want to note real quick is that karen still refers to kenny as her sister in the stick of truth despite not being super involved in their game which i personally choose to read as Trans Rights Subtext
this is how we get lady mccormick / princess kenny, who is largely a passive character during the black friday trilogy, sitting upon her throne and cutely commenting on the surroundings while stan translates for her. then when sony takes her in, she becomes the star of her own show, a magical japanese princess who doesnât take shit from cartman or his army and gets whatever she wants because sheâs a cute little girl and now she gets to be protected and doted upon! also she speaks japanese and is not muffled in the slightest despite wearing her parka....symbolism? and really interestingly is that when she supposedly dies, she brushes herself off and immediately revives, declaring that sheâs okay. in kennyâs feminine fantasy, she doesnât suffer when she dies, and revives without any mess at all. princess kenny is always gonna be okay!
PK is also very flirty and overly sexual. itâs no secret that kenny is very interested in and knowledgeable of sex. he also absolutely worships womenâs bodies, as seen with his views of heaven and that whole plot of âmajor boobage.â i donât even read this as lust, because heâs ten, but sheer fascination with sex. maybe it plays into that whole âgrowing up too fastâ concept where he tries to indulge in the âfunâ parts of adulthood to make up for the exhaustion of caregiving, but this has been a thing since before kenny was depicted as a real caregiver so IDK.Â
anyway, i think PK is also a way for kenny to experiment with flirting and sex, particularly with other boys. she uses her coyness and, in the games, her bare chest to entice boys. her cuteness also attracts grown men in âtitties and dragonsâ which goes largely unremarked upon, which is a bit uncomfortable but still works with the idea that sheâs the most âlovableâ form of kenny. she also apparently thinks the new kid is âcute.â iitâs really funny to me how kenny is depicted as interested in strictly girls while princess kenny only focuses on boys, which could support the idea that PK is a separate entity from kenny, or that kenny just needs to figure himself out. either way, i imagine kenny finds some thrill in getting men to pay attention to them when their male friends often treat her as superfluous, and even then it often involves objectifying herself (this also tracks with their behavior in âfat campâ). itâs kind of sad if you think about it.
in the climax of the stick of truth, princess kenny has her own in-depth backstory, where she was an orc/elf rejected by both the elves and humans. i think this reflects kennyâs feeling of being âotheredâ as non-human (since this game chronologically comes after the superhero trilogy) and just generally not feeling welcome among their friends unless they need her. there may also be some parallels between her friends denying her the right to be a princess and kennyâs friends refusing to believe in his immortality. when she rebels against her friends choosing the stick over friendship, itâs another way for kenny to cope with their mixed-to-negative feelings about their friends. so while PK is a figure to be doted on, sheâs still probably more gutsy than the kenny we usually know.Â
however, PK is not entirely selfish or apathetic about the world around her. in the opening of âa song of ass and fire,â her inner monologue explains her choice to deflect to the PS4 side as the side she believes âis best for all.â she also laments that everybody, including her parents, will be fighting on black friday. it seems that PK dreads the mere idea of war, which contradicts mysterionâs tendency to use violence as a means to protect others. PK still uses her adorableness to help her team, and only asks that they accept her, which really isnât much. itâs just when she, you know, becomes a nazi zombie and puts the world in danger because sheâs so pissed about not being accepted for who she is.Â
in my original post, i used the freudian personality theory to explain these three personas, which i regret because i fucking hate freud and heâs heavily responsible for modern consumerism and planned obsolescence. but the basic concepts of the id, ego, and superego do kind of illustrate what iâm getting at with these guys. i assigned princess kenny as the id, because sheâs more about self-gratification and getting what she thinks she deserves as well as a tendency towards sexual gratification, and mysterion as the superego (hehe get it super) because of his strong inclination towards morality. however, this isnât that black-and-white, as princess kenny has some moral considerations and mysterion has violent impulses (the âaggressive instinctâ) that are more easily attributed to the id. nevertheless, it seems that kenny is still the balance between these exaggerated personas, and when he expresses attitudes similar to theirs, they are far more downplayed due to the necessities of his situation as a caretaker and an underappreciated friend. kind of makes you wonder if/how the attitudes of mysterion and princess kenny will manifest in him when heâs older.

Blush. Chapter 6
Trick or treat! ;)Â
FFN || AO3
Warnings: actual sex ed talk and swearing
-----
She leaned her back against the sink and let out a breath that pushed her bangs out of her face for a moment. Danny had been so close to her. She closed her eyes and could picture his face being so close to hers, his body pressed against her. She sighed contentedly and decided to allow herself a moment of weakness. She imagined what it would be like if they were dating, if they actually were intimate with each other like everyone assumed. She pictured Danny caressing her face and leaving kisses down her neck and along her collarbone. She even tried to imagine Danny wanted her too. Heâd have his hands all over her, along the bare part of her torso, no curve left undiscovered. His hands would move to her upper thigh, squeezing momentarily until they moved higher toâŚ
She let out a minuscule moan which echoed slightly in the empty bathroom and startled her. She stood there shocked for a few seconds before groaning. âStop it stop it stop it!â She turned around and looked at herself in the mirror. âPull yourself together, youâre better than this.âÂ
She took a deep breath and psyched herself up once more. âYouâre cool. Dannyâs just your friend whether you like it or not. This is all fine. Itâs just the other kids and Kitty who are working you up like this,â she muttered quietly to herself as she sauntered back over to the classroom.
She opened the door and instantly regretted it as every pair of eyes in the room looked towards her. âMiss Manson, is everything alright?â Mrs. Tetslaff looked up from her desk.
âY-yeah everything is fine.â Sam felt the more she told herself this, the more it would become true.Â
âFantastic. No more interruptions like that.â The teacher went back to her crossword puzzle as if nothing had happened. Sam walked back to her seat and sat down, eyeing the banana with the condom on it suspiciously. Stupid high school. She pushed it to the corner of her desk where it wouldnât be staring right in her face.Â
âNow that weâve covered things leading up to sex, like consent, condoms, and birth control, we will briefly go over what qualifies as sex. There are a few different types,â Mallory started up again.Â
Paulina turned towards Sam and snickered, âElliot caught you and Danny having a quickie in the hallway, how scandalous!â She held her phone up and waved it in the air.
âWhat?!â Sam squeaked. Mrs. Tetsflaff sent her a glare until she sunk in her seat again. âThatâs not true, I just ran into him in the hallway!â She hastily whispered once the teacherâs attention was no longer on her.Â
âYou canât deny it. Elliot sent me a picture.âÂ
âUgh gross. What? But nothing happened! How did you get your phone back anyways? I saw you turn it in earlier.â Sam crossed her arms over her chest. Maybe she could bust Paulina. Not that an A-lister breaking the rules would ever garner attention, or rather detention. Sam groaned internally. That would never work. Plus, Paulina apparently had a compromising picture she could easily use as blackmail.Â
âPlease,â Paulina stuffed her phone back into her bra, âlike I donât keep one on me at all times. This is my burner phone where Elliott gives me all the gossip.â Sam narrowed her eyes. So thatâs what Paulina was doing with her backpack earlier. Secretly texting the jerkface. Paulina and Elliot managed to sneak extra phones in? She wondered if Tucker would be pissed or impressed. Pissed, because he had to turn in all of his devices. Impressed, because Paulina had more than one phone and he would think she had tech-nerd potential. Sam snorted to herself.Â
âIâm surprised you still have room in there,â Sam retorted.
âLadies, please. There are a few more topics we need to cover before lunch.â Mallory interrupted the conversation before Paulina could scold Sam. âNow, as I was saying, there are different types of sex: oral, anal, and vaginal. Whichever option you choose, it is important to use protection and other tools such as lube to both protect you and your partner and to have the best experience. Remember that consent is important! Please open your informational packets to page six and weâll get the worst part over with.âÂ
Sam rolled her eyes; as if the âworst partâ hadnât happened to her fifteen times over already. She jumped a bit when one of Paulinaâs long and sharp nails jabbed her in the arm and sent the girl a death glare. She opened her mouth and was about to let the Latina girl have it, but Paulina held up her phone once more, showing Sam the picture on her phone. It certainly did not look like they had only literally ran into each other and fell down. Stupid Elliot. Stupid Paulina. Stupid day. Sam wanted nothing more than for this day to be over and for everyone to go back to their typical method of ignoring her existence. She scoffed and turned the page in her packet, bracing herself.
The instructor read through the packetâs section on the actual act of sex, several girls shifting uncomfortably in their seats, the rest tuning the whole thing out. âSam clearly already knows so much about this. Maybe you and Danny should be teaching the class.â Sam rolled her eyes, stretched her leg out, and kicked her cousinâs shin for that comment.Â
âFor the last time, Danny and I are just friends and are going to stay that way. Nothing is going on between us, we arenât dating, heâs not my boyfriend. I donât even have a boyfriend. I donât know how else I can dumb it down enough for you guys to understand,â Sam said bitterly.Â
âI donât know why youâre denying it,â Paulina started, âitâs so obvious you love him.â
âYeah, you really just need to admit that to yourself, Sam. Itâll make your life a lot easier,â Valerie chimed in.Â
âJust admit it, you like him and totally want to see him naked. We all know you do.â Star twisted her hair around her finger boredly.Â
âI do not!â Sam protested.Â
âMaybe weâll leave you alone if you do.â Sam didnât trust her cousin for one second, but with all of the girls staring her down, she decided to take her chances in hopes that they would hold up their end of the bargain.
She sighed and played with her bracelet nervously. âAlright, fine...maybe I do like him. But itâs certainly not any of your business, and if any of you ever tell Danny or anyone else about any of the things said today, I will put your decapitated head on a spike and stick it in front of the school as a warning not to cross me and then use your remaining body parts as human compost. At least then youâd be contributing to society in some way.â Sam looked up and saw several of the girls staring at her; she smirked at the ones who looked absolutely repulsed at her threat.Â
âFinally!â Valerie groaned. âYou admitted it out loud. Now letâs all just get through these next fifteen minutes until we get a break for lunch. You guys are making this a lot longer and more painful to sit through. I have much better things to do than try to keep this civil.â
The girls all turned towards the instructor once more, with the exception of Star and Paulina, who had moved on to another piece of Casper High gossip. Sam breathed out a sigh of relief and looked to see what Mallory was up to now. She eyed the few items placed on the desk in the front of the room. What the heck was the Fenton Ecto Lipstick Laser doing here? She glanced up at the instructor again and decided that maybe now was a good time to pay attention. â...toys that can be used during sex or masturbation, like this one here.â Sam blushed as Mallory held up what Sam had assumed was a Fenton gadget, knowing she had thought very, very wrong. She would never be able to use that weapon ever again. Did the Fentons know that their gadgets looked so inappropriate?! Shit, and she had quite a few of them inside her locker too. As much as she loved seeing her mom burst all the little veins in her head, if her mom got any little ideas in her head, Sam would probably end up in some French boarding school with no way to contact the outside world.Â
Sam shook her head and looked at Mallory pointing to a messy diagram on the board. âAnd this here is the clitoris, and itâs sole purpose is for you to feel pleasure. It actually has several thousands of nerve endings in it! Isnât that fascinating?!â Mallory looked eagerly at the high school students, actually peaking some interest now. Sam looked over at Tetslaff, who had set her puzzle down and suddenly seemed interested. Damn. For Tetslaff to actually be paying attention, this part must be super important.Â
Mallory went into a few more details. âSo, stimulating it will give you more pleasure regardless of what else is going on. Any questions?â Several hands shot up in the air, including one from Tetslaff. Gross. âExcellent! You first.â Mallory beamed as she turned to Tetslaff.Â
Oh no no. Sam was definitely tuning this part out. She started paging through the booklet again. Itâs not that she wasnât mature about the whole thing - she was actually learning some stuff - but she did NOT need to think about one of her teachers having sex.Â
Were the guys learning this stuff too? Was Lancer being as active as Tetslaff? Sam shivered. Didnât need to go there.Â
She looked down at the booklet and pulled it closer to herself so no one would notice. She peeked at the diagram of the male anatomy before quickly looking away. She didnât entirely see the appeal, but it was probably different when it was inside of you. She lightly blushed. She could do this. Sheâs mature. No one should know sheâs fazed by this. Goth indifference. Maturity. She can handle this.Â
Sam looked up when she felt someoneâs eyes on her, spotting Valerie with a slight smirk on her face.Â
âTaking notes, Manson?â Valerie laughed.Â
Sam responded with her middle finger. âNot. A. Word.â Her response just made Valerie laugh even harder. Sam smiled; she liked being friends with Valerie.Â
Speaking of friends, how were Tucker and Danny handling this? She figured Tucker would be the worst off, although Danny really never understood where babies came from until 8th grade. Sam laughed to herself at that. Boys.Â
âMy Phantom would wear briefs for sure!â Paulina bragged, grabbing Samâs attention once more.Â
âNo, heâs definitely a boxers guy,â Star said sternly while brushing her fingers through her hair.
âI donât know, Iâm kinda with Pauli on this one,â Lauren spoke up, âhis suit is so tight.âÂ
âOh!â Paulina gasped and clapped her hands together, âPhantom goes commando!â A few other girls joined in her squealing. âNow I know that when the ghost boy comes to rescue me, I wonât have to work very hard so we can share our first time together!â Paulinaâs eyes shined as she started daydreaming. She was subconsciously squeezing her breasts together. Ugh. âI canât believe the ghost boy flies around naked just for me!âÂ
Sam slammed her hands on the desk, speaking to herself. âHe wears boxer-briefs you ignorant twats!âÂ
Silence. She had said it with absolute certainty.Â
Valerie raised her eyebrows at Sam and smirked. Paulina looked offended. âUgh, why would the ghost boy tell you anything, freak?âÂ
Sam finally looked up after someone got her attention and she looked at all the other girls confused. Once realizing her internal thoughts had actually been an outburst that people heard, her face brightened to a deep scarlet. âWh-what? I didnât, I mean, why would I? It was just...I mean, pfft what are you guys talking about?â Sam tried to play it cool.
âOooo she DEFINITELY knows something! Look at that blush!!â Star squealed. Paulina shot daggers at Sam.Â
âNo, I just...uhhhhâŚâ Sam literally could not think of a single excuse as to why she would know what type of underwear Danny wears. She canât exactly say she patches him up all the time or talk about all the mishaps with his pants when he was getting used to his new powers. Damn, why didnât that still happen now? NOT THE POINT. âIâŚ.asked him?âÂ
Paulina let out a laugh, âWhy would you ever need to talk to him anyways? He doesnât talk to losers.âÂ
âWeâre not losers!â Sam quickly caught her mistake, âI mean, Iâm not a loser, I just talk to him sometimes.âÂ
âStill doesnât explain why you know what he wears. Unless,â a small gasp from Star, âunless you fucked the ghost boy too?! Does Danny know?!âÂ
Samâs head made an audible thump when she slammed it against her desk, her dark hair covering her face completely. âValerie. Help,â Sam quietly muttered into her desk.Â
Fortunately, Valerie had heard it. âUh, Sam just was writing for the fan zine on Phantom and had to ask him. You know, for the readers. Journalism and stuff,â Valerie tried.
Sam let out a sigh of relief.Â
âOh, I canât believe this! Sam is cheating on my Phantom with Danny!â Paulina growled, âIâm going to tell Phantom the truth and then heâll be all mine,â Paulina sneered.Â
âOh my fucking god, oh my god, what is this fucking day?!â Sam picked her head up and groaned. âPaulina, I promise itâs not what you think it is.âÂ
âIâm not listening to a word you say, you two-timing slut!âÂ
âWoah, uncalled for!â Valerie sternly pointed at Paulina. âI donât know how Sam knows Phantom, but I can guarantee you itâs none of your goddamn business. Back off!âÂ
Paulina glared at her former friend and pretended she wasnât phased. âWhatever. Wait until Elliot tells her little boyfriend her secret though,â she smiled mischievously and slyly pulled her phone out from her bra and started frantically typing a message. âEven if she is a bitch, itâs still good gossip.âÂ
Valerie sighed and tried to calm the other girls down. Sam was trying to figure out if she was having a stroke or not. Was all of this actually happening? Did Nocturne take over again? Oh man, now she had to warn Danny that there were rumors flying around that she was having sex with both halves of him! Danny will never want to be seen with her again and...wait, both halves? ...at the same time? She knows he can duplicate, and that could be really -
The bell ringing broke her thought process, thank god.Â
âAlright ladies, grab one of the bags on the way out, go have lunch, then we will meet back in the guysâ classroom to summarize the topics covered today. Feel free to bring your bananas to lunch, just please remove the condom before eating it. Weâve had too many incidents at other schools already. See you in thirty minutes!â Mallory clapped her hands and held a box with little bags in it, making sure every girl took one as they left the classroom.Â
Valerie sent Sam a gentle pat on the back for support before leaving. Sam scoffed at everything that has happened already today and gathered her things, ripping the condom off her banana and slingshotting it until it got caught in Paulinaâs hair without her noticing. She smiled triumphantly and made her way to the front of the room, grabbing a bag on her way out. She walked to her locker and couldnât help but peek inside the âgoodieâ bag. A large handful of condoms, a small tube of lube, a tablet of Plan B, some stickers, and more informational packets. Whoopie, she couldnât wait to go home and read through those. She shoved her things in her locker and smiled softly as she saw her friends approaching her. She knew they would put her in a better mood. She took a deep breath and composed herself.

Hey so I've been considering checking out abot for a while now. But before I do, I wanna know what the draw is for you. What do you like so much about it ?
Strap yourself in, weâre about to go through one longass hell of a ride. Fair warning that this gushy love letter has a good chunk of spoils for canon mp100 and abot alike, so do with that what you will. (though i keep most of the spoils to the earlier chapters so i can leave some firsthand experience left)
ABoT has 5 main (not all) attractions for me, most of which are incredibly personal :1. nuanced, actually mature depiction of abuse2. lack of a âperfect saviorâ3. plotting cause+effect4. scene setting (okay this one is more a taste thing that i happen to really love)5. incredible writing all around
Part 1. Nuanced, actually mature depiction of abuse.
I was an abused and neglected child. As such, itâs very easy to see where some of the appeal of this type of fanfic would come from. Course, Iâd encourage a looksie regardless because itâs written with respect to the subject matter, and because fics like these have great potential to expand on human understanding and empathy.
THAT SAID ! In order to talk about the depiction of abuse in abot, I first need to talk about the abuse in mp100 canon.
To be frank, I think phantomrose96 handles it better than mp100. Especially the execution and aftermath of said topic.
For comparison Iâm going to use the Mogami arc (an arc i do like, perhaps less than the majority of fandom, tho thisâll likely shed a light on why)
The depiction of abuse between abot and canon have some similarities. In both cases, Mob is uprooted from his foundations of support, and the strain goes on for a lengthy amount of time. Canon!Mobâs experiences are 6 months long, and abot!Mob is 4 years. The differences start hereafter, though.
For starters, with canon!Mob, we learn about his torture mainly through his own POV, with Mogami making commentary. His firsthand experience is bolded and put at the forefront, and functions as the end note of the scenes which feature them. Mob is isolated, ostracized, and bullied. He is beat up at several points. One such instance sees him lose a tooth. His bullies torture a cat to death, smash a brick on his head, and stab him with an exacto knife. The âmaturityâ of canon!Mobâs abuse comes firstly from the severity and cruelty of it. And secondly, for how it could drive him into using his psychic powers against people willingly. It highlights that one can be as shaped by their surroundings as by their choices.Itâs dark, and itâs weighty.
However, the abuse in the arc is used a mechanic, and is glossed over once its primary use is over with. No abuse in this vein crops up after this arc.
The point of itâs presence is to raise the stakes, to showcase âthis is fucked upâ and then move on when the lesson is learned. We only get 2 peaks that Mob even remembers it. Once is with Mob acting quite fearful when Mogami shows up again, and the other when Mob goes to help a cat off a pole.
Still, the fact remains that itâs never mentioned for the rest of mp100.Â
And thusly, Mob is presented with no means to process or deal with the trauma other than to, presumably, remain quiet about it. Or otherwise, for the reader to assume that the experience was relegated to subconsciousness. After all, weâre told expressly with Minori that the memory begins to fade as early as a day after.Â
This stance can be detrimental to those who experience abuse, as it can imply that no help exists for the survivor to seek. That itâs better to simply forget about it, and move on without guidance.
Which, yâknow, could work fine if it was ONEâs intention to showcase that some people donât deal with trauma outright, keeping it hidden.
But there is a difference between âpurposefully writing someone to seem unaffected when they really areâ and âpurposefully writing a macguffin to clear the way of an old arc to make room for a new one"Â
I love ONEâs writing, I do, but it seems very clear to me that he was giving himself an out for having to write long reaching consequences of such a brutal arc going forward. Folks can get from the arc what they want, and thatâs hella valid. I mean, shit, my trauma was never front and center either when I was Mobâs age.Â
However, thereâs a clear delineation between coincidence and intentionality.Â
By having the abuse all happen in a dreamlike world, he gives himself an out. The characters are more or less able to skirt around the issue, or otherwise forget about it.ONE thereby dodges having to write further complications to the story he wants to tell.
Enter A Breach of Trust.
In Abot, the aftermath of being abused is a part of Mobâs day to day life, like actual trauma do. And here, the process of dealing and coping with said abuse is the main function of itâs appearance in the fanfic.
The four years Mob spends on his own are broadly covered in a punchy ~1k words at the beginning of chapter 4 (the fic is 133k words long, for comparison). They are to let you know the nature of Mobâs problems, without lingering unnecessarily on them, exploiting them, or making them voyeuristic. And in fact, Mob gets out of the Mogami house in chapter 8 (again, in a fic 24 chaps long).
The rest of the chapters where Mob makes an appearance are about addressing what he went through, and trying to help him.Â
As opposed to mp100 canon, we learn a lot of information as to the nature of what mob experienced through Reigen. He often has sad or horrified responses, as one could expect to have in his shoes. But his response is not the end note of the scenes which feature them. Instead, itâs the actions he and Mob take, in equal turns, to bring about change which gets the end note.
Iâll use the milk scene in chapter 11 as an example.
Reigen learns a piece of information about Mobâs life, namely that he was denied milk:
âYou have milk?â
âUhâŚyeah. Not even expired. I bought it like two days ago.â
âBut Shishou saidâŚâ Mob swallowed the words. His breathing picked up, eyes flickering across the single carton of milk in Reigenâs fridge. Slowly, his voice almost choked, Mob answered, âYes, yes pleaseâŚâ
Reigenâs response:
He couldnât fathom what sort of world the kid had just escaped, but he knew now he didnât want to. And he didnât want to make Mob relive it, not if it was something so horrific that a single glass of warm milk could move him to tears.
The end note of the scene (literally the last line):
âHere,â Reigen said, sliding his mug across the oaken table. âHave mine tooâŚâ
Abot, unlike a good chunk of media, seeks not to use traumatic experiences as a throwaway mechanic for a separate, main focus. Or as a stand in for faux character depth or grittiness. Iâm lookin at you Kaneki Ken.  Or worse, as an inevitable reality. No.
The actual maturity of abot!Mobâs abuse, which Iâve been hootin about with the title card, comes from its application to Mob.
It will not be brushed off as a bad dream. It will not be relegated to subconscious, or forgotten. It is not a âshortcut to coolnessâ, or a âdark historyâ to earn abot!mob some tragic backstory cred. Nor will it be âsolvedâ with a single long talk, or hug, or even to just put Mob back in his house.
Abot seeks to offer a more layered, real world approach to it. That trauma, fictional or not, does not make you cooler. That it takes several, seemingly small steps to start on the path of recovery. And that there is no reaching your âbeforeâ status, but just changing the shape of your âafterâ.
For that matter! Mob also has agency of his own. It is not Reigen that springs Mob from the Mogami house, but rather Mob himself, taking matters into his own hands.Â
There was no plan to it. Mob moved. He raced to the door and the inky world beyond. His feet collided with cold stone. Stone became grass, which sheared away before each footfall, leaving wet pulp and mud beneath his beating steps. The vastness of the open sky and the world stretching off in all directions, even after four years, could not overwhelm him more than the image of his dead Shishou scorched behind his eyelids.
Mob will fight on matters he considers important, calling the cops, for example.
Mobâs jaw moved, his wide eyes steeled over, harder now, resolve tight in his face. He looked up to Reigen. âIâŚwouldnât like that, Mr. Reigen.â
Heâll voice his own opinion, draw his own conclusions, set his own goals.
His hands twisted in his lap, eyes dropping to them for a moment before they flickered up with new, burning resolve. ââŚIf you could teach meâŚâ
âTeach you?â
Mob nodded vigorously. âHow youâre getting rid of it.â
And Mob is not relegated to cowering at all times either. Heâll enjoy things he likes, build himself up, amongst other things.
The rain drenched him. Through the blues and pinks, water could pass. Water wasnât living, so it wasnât stopped, it wasnât shredded. But it felt alive enough to Mob. It felt like something that wanted to reach him, and could.
Mob shut his eyes and smiled. Even if he couldnât suppress the barrier now, that wasnât reason enough to give up, not this time around. This time was different.
Rest assured that this journey is as much an active choice on Mobâs part, as it is Reigenâs. Reigen is simply a guide for Mob. And heâs meandering through his guidance half the time, which brings me to part deux.
Part 2. Lack of a perfect savior
I will be the first to admit that Reigen is hilariously flawed. Abot!Reigen likewise. And yes! This is another reason why I like Abot ^^
Preface in place before I talk about this, I am. a tough ass customer. We just had a whole previous section of analysis to illustrate that (which confession time, i cut that down by half), but to go more in depth - It is extremely easy to take me out of a story. And this is because, ironically, I love storytelling.
For better or worse, when Iâm consuming media, I cannot turn off the storytelling part of my brain. Ergo, if I see something that can be improved, Iâm launched back into a 4th person perspective, no longer engaging directly with the content. Sometimes itâs minor enough where I donât mind any. But unfortunately, more often than not, itâs enough to get me to drop things when too many instances pile up.Â
And as one of those Hoity Toity Connoisseurs of the hurt/comfort genre, the human version of the Messianic Archetype⢠is both a common occurrence, and a surefire way to get me to drop your story upon first sight.
I cannot engage with media that have regular ass people know exactly how to react, what to say, what to read into, on the first try, when the nature of human existence so chaotic and varied.
Maybe that kid is hiding under the table because youâre wearing fuchsia, maybe itâs because your voice sounds like someone they had a nightmare about, maybe its because the lights hurt their eyes, maybe itâs because they feel safer in cramped spaces, maybe theyâre eating ants. You donât know. They donât know. Getting things wrong is as much a part of the process as getting things right.
SO!!! ONCE MORE WITH FEELING!!! ABOT!!!
Phantomrose makes it clear, as early as Reigen & Mobâs first meeting, that weâre dealing with a regular ass human fuckup, even in the midst of the rose filter from Mobâs POV.
In the scene, Reigen is presented as being undoubtedly ignorant as to the true nature of what the hell is going on. He, mistakenly, does not believe that the barrier is real. All he knows that is Mob has come from some Yikes and needs help. Oh, and in Reigenâs limited knowledge, he thinks thereâs a confirmed Dead Man off somewhere too.
And yet, despite the pressing circumstances, or yâknow, having a presumed corpse he should probably mention to somebody, Reigen does not call the cops.
âOkay. Okay⌠Do youâjustâdo you want to come to my house? Just for tonight. ItâsâŚlate. Donât feel like dealing with any more police officers tonight anyway. Maybe we justâŚgo sleep. Get you some clothes or, a shower probably. ItâsâŚIâm tired. Youâve got to be tired too.â
We get an explanation for this later on, in chapter 14âŚ
What if he ran off again, back to his dead Shishouâs basementâŚ?
âŚbut. Were the audience not clued into Mobâs circumstances, one would argue that though well intentioned, Reigenâs messing up. And despite the many things Reigen does to help Mob (which he does, he really does) this motif continues throughout the fic.
With Reigen sometimes saying insensitive things to Mob.
âNo, IâmâŚâ Mob paused. He hiccupped, voice still hitching, body still trembling. âIâm sorry Shishou is dead. I did something to make him kill himself. I know it.â
âGood, Mob. GoodâŚâ
Mob stared up, jaw slack, baffled.
With Reigen often acting as much as his own interest as in Mobâs.
âToast, Mob, itâs going to be toast. And eggs. And yes. This is breakfast for both of us, and youâre going to help.â Reigen looked the boy over, and the feeling in his chest was almost manic. He was looking at something maybe he could fix.
Where Reigen will make logical assumptions, but false ones nonetheless.
âIâm going to grab just a handful of things from those aisles, okay? Not going far. I just want you to stay here, with the paper, and pick up our order when itâs ready. Okay? Itâs another exercise. Iâm still here. Iâm still suppressing the barrier. I just think youâre strong enough to stand here for a moment by yourself. Can you do that?â
âcarved things up, sliced them, killed themâŚ
Mobâs mind filled with static.
He nodded. It was the only thing he could think to do.
Reigen smiled, and stood up from his crouched position. He turned on his heel, toward the left side of the store. He rounded the edge of the counter, and suddenly he was gone.
And yes ! As a survivor, this shit is important to me.Â
These scenes showcase that comfort does not have to be found gift wrapped, pure and untainted, and delivered by an angel spluttering down from the shiniest parts of heaven. No. It can be found in people who are flawed and sometimes selfish and who are just trying. It can be found in folks like abot!Reigen.
In folks who werenât predestined by some holy undertaking, but rather who are just making the best of the circumstances they find themselves thrust into.
SPEAKING OF WHICH,
Part 3. Plotting cause + effectÂ
Iâll be honest and say this is something I learned very recently from Phanrose.Â
From my creative perspective, as long as an action is in character for someone, I can find a way to make it happen. A good showcase for this is, ironically enough, Attic Au, and itâs many incarnations. I can adapt to circumstances to cause what I want to happen.Â
This is, again, a tie-in to the way I rationalize the chaotic nature of human existence. Sometimes shit can just do, and as long as you pull hard enough emotionally, you can get people on board. So I spend a lot of time on the âwhyâ, with my âhowsâ remaining fairly lose and interchangeable.
Abot takes this in the opposite direction. She says âokay but what if I use the chaotic nature of human existence to cause everything to bump into eachotherâ.
And honestly Iâm kinda tripping over it ?? Like itâs extremely fun ? Connecting all these dots? And it doesnât feel convenient either. It feels like a logical progression.
To use early examples, as I have been for the most part:
Jun hires Reigen to investigate her husband Tetsuo disappearing at weird hours.
âThatâs really all I want from this.â She looked up now, palms in her lap, eyes set to Reigen. âI want you to just figure out whatâs going on because I canât.â
Reigen then discovers that Tetsuo is being possessed.
A thousand memories assaulted him at once, tainted with the raw smell of incense, the grittiness of salt between his fingers and under his nails, dimmed lights and candles and incantations and that dread in the air, like pressure, that he felt whenever a Spirits and Such case turned out to be real.
Reigen decides to confront Mogami 2 different times. The first time he learns his identity, and the second time Reigen gets too close to hitting on Mobâs presence for Mogamiâs comfort.
âWhy did you buy cough syrup today?â Reigen blurted out. âYou miss that taste too? Tetsuo doesnât have a cold. Itâs not for him. You got other puppets I donât know about?!â
Mogami threatens to kill Tetsuo and take Reigen, so Reigen makes a bargain (with newly cut up hand to make his 1 sigil out of 1000 work).
Reigen thrust his hands down and out, body displayed unprotected. Sweat slid down his face, soaked through his suit, mixed with the blood in his palm. âCome possess me! Space for rent right here, y-yeah? Yeah! Not gonna resist. Not gonna fight. All Iâm gonna do is slam you with these tags if you get too close!âÂ
The tag works, banishing Mogami. Mob notices the lack of Mogamiâs presence, and goes looking for him.
Even when Mogami left the house, his aura only ever grew fainter, steadily diffused as Mogami established distance between himself and the house. It was an easy blip to detect at all times. It was a constant thrumming presence in Mobâs life for the last four years.
And it had vanished in an explosion that left Mobâs psychic core ringing.
ââŚShishou?â Mob called through the door.
Upon finding Mogamiâs corpse in the attic, Mob makes for the streets, thinking Mogami has freshly killed himself and that he can no longer stay there.
Mob shot down the hall, took the stairs two at a time with his hand skimming the banister. His mind wasnât clearing. His thoughts werenât forming. The reality of what heâd seen beat in heavier against him with each passing second. Mob let out another keening crying, finding no response in the black house.
Another brush of wind, Mob turned toward the foyer. Heâd been rightâthe front door had been left open.
This makes for a wonderful storytelling device. Firstly, it makes the audience both wary and excited for the consequences of any actions in the future. If any action can seemingly build off one another, whatâs to say a throwaway moment wont come back to haunt us?Â
Plus! Aside from making scenes engaging, it also subverts some tropes while itâs at it.
Reigen, despite literally being a PI, does not find Mob on a missing personâs case. And does not discover Mob either of the times he followed Tetsuo into the Mogami house. Instead he only finds Mob by the boy crashing into him. Which only happens again because of a set up in chapter 3.
This carries on and spills over into Ritsuâs plotline too! Which nbnmbxn, I havenât touched on as much in order to leave a good chunk of story there to peruse as you will.
Iâve learned a lot just from watching pr96 chisel out a story. And you wanna know what else Iâve learned?
Part 4. Scene settingÂ
OKAY I FESS UP THIS IS JUST ME HAVING A THING FOR SETTINGS BEING INCORPORATED INTO THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE SCENE OKAY, OKAY.
With that out of the way, sheâs damn good at it yall.
Phantomrose96 likes to employ what I call mood scenery. Where the physical objects present in a setting take a backseat to how the characters feel about it, and therefore flesh it out all the better.
Compare how Reigen sees his apartment:
Reigen cringed a bit as he looked about, taking in, remembering the mess decorating the living room. The ashtray on the table overflowed with cigarette butts, staining the wood around it with sooty acrid residue. Three empty plates were pushed to the tableâs edge, scraped of food and left to stagnate forâŚhow many days, Reigen wasnât sure. Empty beer cans gathered in a herd near them, a few on the floor, leaving sticky coagulated rings around their rim and smelling of staleness, of stagnant fermentation.
With how Mob sees it:
Mobâs apprehension eased off. The look was replaced entirely with something like confusion. He pulled out of his blanket cocoon, let his eyes rove over the apartment in full inspection. The confusion never left his face.
âItâs so much cleaner than Shishouâs house.â
Scenes like this are peppered and expertly handled throughout the entirety of abot.Â
As a comic illustrator, I often struggle with coming up with backgrounds that tell you a bit about the circumstances of the people who live there, and about the mood of someone viewing it. But Phananarosa does it.
And, like. every setting is like this. Instead of getting fatigue at scene changes, I eagerly dive in because whatâs not to love !!! It captures just enough details that it can be fleshed out, without boring the audience with a surplus of inconsequential details.
Teruki walked past the rows of lockers. Further back were bathroom stalls. Three sinks lined up beneath a wall-length mirror. This area existed as its own pocket, seemingly separate from the rest of the lockers, and the light only scarcely touched it. The shadows grew heavy along a gradient, the farthest sink half shrouded in darkness. Even farther back, crowned by a single burnt-out hanging light, was a row of four showerheads, no curtains separating one from the next.
It is no coincidence that some of the backgrounds I consider to be some of my better ones, are ones I made for abot.
Itâs very apparent that Phanro9 knows what sheâs doing with the words she chooses to dress these with. And, you guessed it, TIME TO SEGUE INTO
Part 5. Incredible writing all around
Okay now I can just gush about some the extra little details that GhostFlower96 uses that just make her tale that much more fun to read.
Amazing dialogue. Especially in Reigenâs case.
âGottaswirl the eggs to seal in the moisture. Gotta justâŚput extra butteron the toast, I guess, so you donât taste the black part cuz thatâsprobably bitter, so youânever mind Iâll make different toast thatisnât burned, gimme your plate.â
You ever tire of reading fics where the characters sound the same ? Spectreblossom has got you covered!
He thrust a hand out, palm open to Ritsu. âMy name is Teruki Hanazawa. Iâm the esper whoâs better than you.â
Ritsu stared at the offered hand. He fought the instinct to step back. âThe spirits didnât say anyone owned them.â He paused, and weighed his options. âAnd who says youâre stronger than I am?â
Say you wanna feel ur heartstrings tugged because god oh god heâs a mess but heâs still good for something. we got a fresh supply
Beside them, the rice pot boiled over, glutinous water dripping down the black potâs side and charring against the newly cleaned grating. The sauce bowl sat stagnant and undissolved, a colloid of new and stale ingredients perhaps unsalvageable for the recipe. Broken spoons, filthy sponges, open containers of starch and sugar and soy sauce littered the counter tops, the smell of something burning lingering overtop.
And at the center of the mess, Mob sliced the knife clean through the red bell pepper.
You wanna be haunted by singular closing lines? Already on it.
Thebarrier swept back around Mob, like the curtain drawn at the close ofa play.
Kids ? Being written like kids ? In phantomroseyboboeybananafanafofoseyfiphimomoseyphantomroseyâs fanfic? Itâs more likely than you think!Â
âAfter this, can we go back to the park?â Mob asked. He wobbled, tilting his head over his shoulder to ask Mogami directly.
âWe go to the park every day.â Mogami answered. He walked the sidewalk, thin silver hair catching sunlight and twists of icy wind. The hollow pockets beneath his eyes were deep, but not unkind, intently watchful of Mob who dipped and wavered with each balance-beam step.
âYeah, because I like it.â
You want some de-glorification of teenage violence? Boy have I just the thing.
He felt 9 again, scared, weak, unsafe, and he cried quietly while he watched the consciousness leave Terukiâs body.
Limp and loose, Terukiâs hands dropped from the tie around his neck.
You like metaflours and symbopolism ? WE GOT THAT TOO
Reigen looked over his shoulder. Mob shut the door behind them, turning to investigate the apartment with wide captive eyes. ââŚItâs warm,â he muttered, and stepped in line behind Reigen.
You wanna feel like you got punched in your chest ? Even on things you knew already ? Even things you had every tool in your belt to see coming?
Reigen stopped. He lost track of his own words as his focus fell entirely on the sight in front of him. The kid was standing halfway between the bathroom and the living room, his hair still a bit wet, and his borrowed clothes soft and loose. He stood a head shorter than Reigen, and his wide eyes stared back, lost, waiting for instruction. Waiting as though he needed permission to even get his sheets and go to bed.God, it really was just a kidâŚ

@mackerel-monarch
the psychological horror created by Hasbroâs desire to sell more toys rather than honour the desires of the original creator resulting in an immortal alicorn princess of friendship doomed to watch her friends grow old and die without her is so interesting to me. by trying to cater to children more you have accidentally created a reality in which death of the main characters friends as she lives on for centuries is not just implied but confirmed. idk itâs fascinating to think about
#even moreso by g5#with discord in the comics clearly descended into misery without fluttershy#their absence speaks volumes#and i know kids are able to handle mature topics like death earlier than we often assume#but still itâs so strange to think about death of the main characters being canon and confirmed in the colourful pony cartoon#mlp#wild#major character death#character death#dont get me wrong i loved the last episode so much
