so random but i swear in some fic in the infection universe, sometime after chapter 28, there was a line about how george was getting updates from adam about the situation. But i cant find the line and its driving me INSANE and now im convinced i made it up

The good news is - you did not make it up! However, it did take me a moment and consultation with one of my mutuals to find the line because I KNEW I wrote it but was then panicking because I couldn't remember where. The bit about Fictional!George getting updates from Fictional!Hann when he and Fictional!Matty were broken up and Fictional!Matty was in the hospital can be found in Chapter 10 (Thirty Nine.) of Rid Me of the Blues. I've included the passage below:

“What if I relapse?” Matty asked quietly, George gave his hand another squeeze. “Then we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it,” George assured him. For the most part, Matty had been clean since he entered rehab.  There was The Incident as Matty referred to it when looking at his scar, in 2018, which resulted in Matty spending two weeks at a psychiatric facility while they sorted out his medication, and George blowing up Hann’s phone for any kind of update he knew he wasn’t actually privileged to anymore. His girlfriend at the time had been annoyed that he was spending more time texting Hann about Matty than paying attention to her on their holiday.  There had been another hiccup towards the end of 2020, isolation and the pandemic wearing heavily on him, but he had been clean since then. Matty had even cut back on alcohol and given up smoking- cigarettes and weed all together in the five years since they had gotten back together.

my hometown is completely gone from what pictures i can find of it, i have not heard from my family (including aunts, uncles, parents, one sibling, and a grandparent), and the infrastructure in the mountain communities is wiped out. i cannot stress how catastrophic this is, or how difficult it will be for these communities to build back. i am angry, and scared, and heartbroken by everything that's happened.

and our government is spending it's money to fund a genocide.

free palestine, and don't be complicit. realize that this is not something happening that doesn't affect you--although it shouldn't take this to care about the deaths of thousands of people anyway.

this is just my opinion but i think any good media needs obsession behind it. it needs passion, the kind of passion that's no longer "gentle scented candle" and is now "oh shit the house caught on fire". it needs a creator that's biting the floorboards and gnawing the story off their skin. creators are supposed to be wild animals. they are supposed to want to tell a story with the ferocity of eating a good stone fruit while standing over the sink. the same protective, strange instinct as being 7 and making mud potions in pink teacups: you gotta get weird with it.

good media needs unhinged, googling-at-midnight kind of energy. it needs "what kind of seams are invented on this planet" energy and "im just gonna trust the audience to roll with me about this" energy. it needs one person (at least) screaming into the void with so much drive and energy that it forces the story to be real.

sometimes people are baffled when fanfic has some stunning jaw-dropping tattoo-it-on-you lines. and i'm like - well, i don't go here, but that makes sense to me. of fucking course people who have this amount of passion are going to create something good. they moved from a place of genuine love and enjoyment.

so yeah, duh! saturday cartoons have banger lines. random street art is sometimes the most precious heart-wrenching shit you've ever seen. someone singing on tiktok ends up creating your next favorite song. youtubers are giving us 5 hours of carefully researched content. all of this is the impossible equation to latestage capitalism. like, you can't force something to be good. AI cannot make it good. no amount of focus-group testing or market research. what makes a story worth listening to is that someone cares so much about telling it - through dance, art, music, whatever it takes - that they are just a little unhinged about it.

one time my friend told me he stayed up all night researching how many ways there are to peel an orange. he wrote me a poem that made me cry on public transportation. the love came through it like pith, you know? the words all came apart in my hands. it tasted like breakfast.
