Alexa’s boss, Amazon’s Head of Hardware and Devices, Dave Limp explained they’re working on improving Alexa’s hunches.
“We’re at a point where one out of five interactions with Alexa are not instigated by the customer.” This means 20% of the time Alexa is doing something on your behalf, like playing news after you hit snooze to subtly wake you up.

It’s inevitable. We have the beautiful advantage of knowing super intelligence is coming. We ought to make those rules now and not wait until its too late. We’re giving birth to AI. We can teach it and point it in the right direction, but where it goes from there as it becomes more powerful as this ghost in our data and ultimately its own being is anyone’s guess. Maybe it will become like Dune, where thinking machines get banned on Earth and we send AI out into the universe to spread the light of consciousness so information is wherever you go, and then Earth becomes this boutiquey thing like organic vegetables where when human music is heard people will be like, oh, this was made by a woman, not a robot.”
As to whether this will turn into a dystopian nightmare of our own making, Grimes concluded, “Every tool has the potential to be dangerous. Where we are headed depends upon what we do with the technology. We’re on the knife’s edge right now but we have solved insane problems like our faces being beamed through space and time so we can be together in the same place right now despite physically being all over the world. That’s some crazy wizardry happening right here. There is a solution, we just shouldn’t make failure an option.”

Which begs the question, if the age of autonomous weapons is upon us, who do you trust more with it, enemy nations or billionaire Oculus founder Palmer Luckey? That’s what Luckey asked in making the case for the tech giants to re-engage with the U.S. Department of Defense on working on national security solutions.
“AI is this very powerful and useful technology but its not very good at making life and death decisions and is totally capable of running autonomous weapon systems. We need to assume it develops as fast as the most optimistic people assume and set rules now,” Luckey said, “We shouldn’t be outsourcing accountability to a machine. You can’t lock up a machine in prison for war crimes.” Anduril AI analyzes data to help humans pull the trigger, with safeguards to prevent abuses, he said. He criticized Google and Apple for not doing more.
“Big Tech companies are not only not working on national security problems, but they’re killing the work of companies that are. This happened with Boston Dynamics. That’s because there are financial and PR incentives to stay out of military work. China has done an incredible job of blocking access to their markets as a tool to get the culture of Western democracies to subvert itself to China. Meanwhile, China is making huge strides in autonomy and AI. China is going to be a superpower, bigger than the United States.”

I do believe we’re going to continue to have a cluster in the Bay Area because of strong network effects that accelerate companies and people working in those industries. I don’t think that behavior goes away after Covid.”

As to where he’s placing his AI bets for the new year, Initialized Capital’s Garry Tan said, “We remain very long on computer vision. We were the first investors in Cruise Automation which broke open the self-driving car space and now there is a lot of practical automation that was never possible before.”
An investor in Standard Cognition, he talked about its camera-only cashierless retail experience that enables you to walk into a store, pick up whatever you need and walkout, in stark contrast to Amazon Go which relies on shelf sensors.
“Down the road we think practical robotics are just around the corner with sub $1,000 real time SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) computer vision, for use industrially and in the home.” Tan is also invested in Ava.me which applies on the fly machine learning to voice recognition and live captioning on Zoom.
Lightspeed Venture Partners Nicole Quinn
Lightspeed Venture Partners’ Nicole Quinn is also bullish on AI. She sees online social experiences remaining sticky for the foreseeable future. She’s invested in Lunchclub, an AI concierge that serves up Zoom coffees for meaningful professional networking, and Cameo, an AI booking agent for celebrities that will chat or send birthday greetings for a fee.

Gwyneth Paltrow on turning Goop’s first profit
Quinn then took to the screen with her portfolio client, Gwyneth Paltrow who shared news of Goop turning its first profit.
In March, “When the lockdowns happened and commerce seemed to completely stop, I set our marketing budgets to zero, pulled down our social media spend, and returned to our content roots to get back into the hearts and minds of our readers. Soon after engagement metrics went up and transactions followed, but our events and ads business had gone to zero overnight and our retail business were down from plan. I knew I had to get to profitability as quickly as possible. The hardest part was having to take such a stringent look at the P&L, close stores and let go of people we loved,” Paltrow said.
“We tell our companies, to win you got to be around. You need to have at least 24 months runway at all times,” said Quinn, applauding Paltrow actions.
Then Paltrow, an Academy award winning actress, landed a Netflix series, Goop Lab, which just got renewed for Season 2. “We got a lot of new customers from the show. I feel like a lot of brands are very reliant on Facebook, but when you live in the intersection of content and commerce, founders need to think of ways to organically reach customers. I’ll never buy another customer off Facebook again.”
Paltrow added, “I’m not that bullish on 2021. I think we’re still in for a lot of instability. We’re looking at creative ways to monetize content and find sustainable growth from within our own channels as opposed to spending money to prospect. We’re looking at doing something in food which is a strong pillar for us and not intensive from a capital expenditure standpoint.”

Tennis legend Serena Williams is a prominent AI investor. Her portfolio includes Tonal, Noom, Zipline, Masterclass, Gobble, Billie and Daily Harvest, which she backed along with Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Quinn and Paris Hilton. Before the pandemic, she was an extensive traveler and launched an Away x Serena Williams luggage line. She went on screen with Away cofounder Jen Rubio to discuss their collaboration and the challenges the brand has been facing this year.
“Being at the intersection of travel and retail was pretty much the worst place to be. We stopped everything and took a hard look at should we be marketing at all. Approaching it very authentically and transparently with our customers allowed us to keep the brand going when it didn’t make any sense to travel,” Rubio said, sharing how fans have been supporting the brand by posting memes of Away suitcases posed as standing desks and work out benches. The company has since been able to pivot with travel goods for socially distanced road trips, digital nomading and pandemic puppies.

Smartphones have become a vital part of life for most of us. We spend most of our day with a smartphone — even more than what we devote to our loved ones. But what makes them important for us? Is it the mobility that we get from them? Or is it the smartness that they provide to us while on-the-move? Well, answers to such questions depend on how you use the smartphones. But one thing is quite clear that smartphones have evolved a lot from what we had in the past. They’ve got new designs, vivid display panels, multiple cameras, and more powerful processors than workstations of yesterday. But which were the best smartphones of the decade past?
Apple, BlackBerry, Samsung, HTC, and Nokia were the initial smartphone companies that set some benchmarks for young contenders such as OnePlus, Vivo, and Xiaomi. Chipmakers largely including Qualcomm and MediaTek have also helped the market grow faster than ever predicted with processors supporting newer tasks and enhanced performance experiences. Both Apple and Google have also significantly improved their respective mobile operating systems, iOS and Android, which are running on all smartphones nowadays.

Apple iPhone 4
Apple back in June 2010 brought the iPhone 4 as its distinctly designed smartphone over the previous iPhone models. The iPhone 4 had a glass-sandwich design along with a metal frame that was copied by a large number of smartphone companies, including some Indian vendors such as Lava and Karbonn. The fourth-generation iPhone model also offered a slim waistline and an optimised software experience along with a list of apps and iOS 4. However, Apple faced the infamous “Antennagate” issue thanks to the glitch in designing the antenna gap. The company did try to fix it by offering bumpers and overhauling the antenna structure on the iPhone 4s.

In 2010, when Apple was flourishing with huge domination in the smartphone market, Samsung brought the Galaxy S as its flagship phone to closely compete against the iPhone. The Samsung Galaxy S, which precisely debuted in March 2010, ticked all the boxes that the market set for a top-notch smartphone. It had a Super AMOLED display, Samsung Exynos (Hummingbird) SoC, and as much as 16GB of onboard storage to take on the iPhone. Samsung also provided a Corning Gorilla Glass protection that later became usual for all mid-range and premium smartphones. It set the benchmark for today’s smartphones that have cameras with a megapixel count of 48, 64, or 108 — thanks to similar pixel binning techniques. The Nokia 808 PureView also had a Xenon flash instead of merely including an LED flash model. However, it ran Nokia Belle that was based on Symbian OS 10.1 over Android.

Google tied up with LG to launch the Nexus 4 in October 2012. The smartphone offered flagship-like specifications at a mid-range price point. It also provided stock Android 4.2 Jelly Bean along with guaranteed updates for some time. The Google Nexus 4 also include wireless charging support and features such as active noise cancellation and a polarised glass with a 3D pattern finish. All those highlights made the Nexus 4 a compelling Android smartphone against the competition.

HTC One
HTC One was unveiled back in February 2013 to counter the likes of the Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III. The smartphone that debuted with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean had an aluminium unibody construction that made it an eye-catching option against its competitors. Also, HTC offered stereo front-mounted speakers that were equipped with BoomSound technology. The curved back design of the HTC One aided ergonomics and provided a good grip in the hand. There were also white polycarbonate bands to give room to the integrated antennas. Overall, the design of the HTC One made it a trendsetter, and its aesthetics were clearly featured later on models such as the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. Apple also offered a similar antenna design on the iPhone 6.

Xiaomi Mi 3
Xiaomi Mi 3 debuted in September 2013. It was designed initially for China, but the phone reached markets including India that helped make the Beijing-based company a household name. The Mi 3 offered top-of-the-line specifications of its time that included a 5-inch full-HD display and a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC — all at an affordable price. It also had an attractive design that was made through a unibody shell that became an example for newer smartphones by not just Xiaomi but also many of its competitors. The smartphone also had Android 4.4.2 KitKat at the time of its launch along with MIUI.

LG G Flex had a flexible display and battery along with a self-healing coating at the back that all made it to our list of iconic smartphones of the decade past. Launched in October 2013, the LG G Flex had a curved P-OLED display that was equipped along with the flexible lithium polymer battery to provide a curved design. The smartphone ran Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with LG’s Optimus UI that brought features such as Dual Window and QSlide to distinguished the experience.

Motorola back in November 2013 launched the Moto G as its budget smartphone targeted at emerging markets. The smartphone helped Motorola gained huge popularity in growing markets including India and Brazil years after its comeback following a split into two separate entities — with Motorola Mobility serving the consumer market and Motorola Solutions deliver enterprise offerings. The Moto G had a simple and sober design that appealed to the masses. Similarly, the stock Android experience that was initially based on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean provided fair enough convenience. The affordable price of the Moto G also made it amongst the early smartphones to kick off the budget wars in the market.

It was one of the highly acclaimed smartphones among app developers — thanks to the openness provided by CyanogenMod to customise the experience. The OnePlus One also brought the trend of limited availability through its invite-only system. It was later transformed into flash sales that companies such as Xiaomi adopted to create enough hype of their new offerings.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge was launched in March 2015 with a dual-edge curved display. After facing many ups and downs, BlackBerry brought the BlackBerry Priv as its pure Android smartphone in September 2015. Running on Android 5.1.1, the BlackBerry Priv offered a full-fledged Android experience along with Android for Work support of enterprise users. The device also had a curved-edge display. Since it wasn’t based on BlackBerry 10 OS aka BB10, the Priv didn’t have a gesture controls. Instead, the phone had on-screen navigation keys.

Lenovo tied up with Google and unveiled the Phab 2 Pro in June 2016 as the world’s first smartphone based on Project Tango platform, which was aimed augmented reality (AR) computing to mobile devices. In addition to its AR features, the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro had Dolby Audio 5.1 Capture technology for recording 3D surround sound experiences. The smartphone also had a large, 6.4-inch QHD IPS display and came with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

Xiaomi Mi MIX
A large number of smartphone vendors the days claim to offer a full-screen experience. But if we need to find out the trailblazer of that segment, it is none other than the Xiaomi Mi MIX. The smartphone was launched back in October 2016 as a concept phone along with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. But shortly after its initial preview, it went on sale in China. The near bezel-less display of the Mi MIX was its USP, though it also had a piezoelectric acoustic earpiece speaker as well as an ultrasonic proximity sensor as the two key highlights. The selfie camera of the Mi MIX was also claimed to be 50 percent smaller in size over the conventional sensors and was placed at the bottom right corner of the phone to give enough space for the display.

Apple iPhone X
In September 2017, Apple revamped its iPhone family by unveiling the iPhone X. The new iPhone model, which was the tenth anniversary iPhone, was completely different in looks and design from what we saw earlier. With a display notch, it housed facial recognition sensors, bringing the tech to the mainstream and introducing Face ID as an upgrade to the existing fingerprint recognition technology that the Cupertino company called Touch ID. Also, the iPhone X — originally based on iOS 11 — was amongst the first successful smartphones with a completely button-less front panel. Apple also provided a vertically-placed dual camera setup that made a trend in itself.

Razer Phone
Razer, the company that’s popular for developing gaming peripherals, launched the Razer Phone back in November 2017. The smartphone, which was the predecessor to the Razer Phone 2, had IGZO IPS display panel with 120Hz refresh rate to deliver immersive gaming experiences. There was also a wide colour gamut to impress mobile gamers. The Razer Phone had a dual front-firing speakers along with THX-certified amplifiers and Dolby Atmos integration to deliver a surround sound experience. The phone came with Android 7.1.1 Nougat at the time of its launch. It all-in-all set a benchmark for gaming phones.

Vivo X20 Plus UD
Vivo launched the X20 Plus UD in January 2018 as the world’s first smartphone to carry an under-display fingerprint sensor. It included the Synaptics-made under-display fingerprint sensor that was touted to detect a fingerprint in few milliseconds. The presence of the under-display fingerprint sensor, which later became the new normal among Chinese smartphones and widely called in-display fingerprint sensor, replaced the requirement of having a physical fingerprint sensor. The Vivo X20 Plus UD that was based on Android 7.1 Nougat also came with a matte back panel that just had the dual rear camera setup along with an LED flash.

Huawei P20 Pro
Huawei unveiled the P20 Pro in March 2018 as the world’s first smartphone with a triple rear camera setup. The Huawei P20 Pro had a camera setup that included an 8-megapixel sensor with 3x optical zoom thanks to a Leica telephoto lens and a 40-megapixel RGB sensor. The third sensor was placed next to the dual camera setup that had 20-megapixel resolution. It was a monochrome sensor — meant to enhance sharpness. Further, the P20 Pro included 4D Predictive Focus and six-axis image stabilisation. The smartphone was launched with Android 8.1 Oreo.

Vivo Nex
Vivo Nex was unveiled in June 2018 as the world’s first smartphone with a pop-up selfie camera. The company used an elevating mechanism that was later adopted by its homegrown competitors such as Huawei and Xiaomi. The Vivo Nex also included Vivo’s Screen SoundCasting technology that replaced the earpiece from the front side and provides a nearly bezel-less display. Further, the smartphone had the in-display fingerprint sensor that was different from the sensor available on the Vivo X20 UD. The smartphone came with Android 8.1 Oreo.

Samsung Galaxy A8s
Samsung launched the Galaxy A8s in December 2018 as the world’s first smartphone with a hole-punch display panel. The South Korean company called the panel the Infinity-O Display that reached various newer Galaxy-series models, including the Galaxy S10e and Galaxy Note 10 family. The Samsung Galaxy A8s based on Android 9 Pie also had a triple rear camera setup and an aluminium frame. Nevertheless, the hole-punch display was the USP of the Galaxy A8s that set the stage of many other similar-looking smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy Fold is arguably the world’s first foldable smartphone for the masses. Although Samsung saw some criticism over the flimsy design of the Galaxy Fold, it made some improvements and fixed the initial design flaws to make the smartphone ready for the global markets. Apple to close iTunes

Retail sales show ‘biggest decline on record’
Retail sales decreased by 2.7% year on year in May, the worst monthly decline since this record began in January 1995 if Easter distortions are excluded, according to data from the British Retail Consortium.
On a like-for-like basis, sales were down 3%, the steepest decline since December 2008 as the market struggled against comparisons to last year, when the World Cup, Royal Wedding and hot weather boosted sales. While both measures were impacted by strong sales growth in May 2018, the declines drag down the three- and 12-month averages to just 0.2% and 0.9% respectively.
For the three-months to the end of May, food sales increased by 0.8% on a like-for-like basis and 1.9% on a total basis. However, non-food sales were down 2.7% year on year. Online sales growth in non-food slowed to just 11.5%.
Paul Martin, UK head of retail at KPMG, which carries out the study, says: “April may have provided retailers with some light reprieve thanks to Easter, but May’s staggering fall of 3% like-for-like is a stark reminder of the industry’s ongoing issues, which for many require urgent attention.
“The extremely low growth online is real cause for concern, especially with almost a third of all non-food sales today being made online. This trend has continued to manifest itself over the last year and requires real focus from the retail community.”
WWF to work with Coca-Cola and P&G to tackle plastic waste
Coca-Cola and Procter & Gamble are among the companies partnering with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to come up with solutions to the issue of plastic waste.
A new platform, called ReSource: Plastic, will provide guidance, best practices and tools – including a measurement framework to help quantify reductions in plastic waste. The hope is the hub will inspire companies to act to reduce plastic consumption and improve recycling.
Other companies involved include McDonald’s, Starbucks and Tetra Park, while the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and Ocean Conservancy are acting as thought partners.
The move comes as companies respond to growing political and consumer pressure to reduce plastic waste and combatting its impacts. That includes bans on plastic straws, reducing use of plastic packaging and pledging to recycle more.
“While ambitious commitments are the jumping off point for any successful venture, we know that no single individual, organisation, company or government can tackle the root causes of plastic waste on their own,” says Sheila Bonini, senior vice-president of private sector engagement at WWF.
“When it comes to the private sector, commitments move companies in the right direction, but to actually fulfil those commitments, companies need a roadmap for navigating the broken plastics system, a collaborative environment that fosters innovation and aggressive goal-setting, and the right tools to make their bold visions a reality.”
Diageo partners with MTV on responsible drinking campaign

Diageo is partnering with MTV to launch a responsible drinking campaign aimed at its core audience of 18- to 24-year-olds.
The three-part series, called ‘Weekend not wasted’ features MTV presenters and will air on MTV’s website, YouTube and social channels. It will also be promoted on local TV channels in the UK, Spain, Germany and Denmark with an “aspirational” message around what becomes possible if people drink responsibly and seize the day.

UK ad spend accelerates but slowdown predicted
Despite uncertainties, UK ad spend was up 7.8% year on year in 2018 and is predicted to hold steady with a rise of 6.1% this year. However, growth will slow into 2020, with an increase of 4.6% forecast, according to Group M’s ‘This Year, Next Year’ ad forecast report.
Currently, digital remains dominate and is responsible for more than 60% of total advertising, of which more than half is search. It is still growing at double-digit pace – 11% is forecast for 2019.
TV ad spend is expected to remain stable at around £4.5bn through 2019 and 2020, still accounting for around 20% of media investment. Meanwhile, outdoor spend is expected to see growth of around 3% in 2019 and 2020 as digital formats drive up spend.
Radio also appears set to hold on to its revenue base this year, followed by a predicted 2% growth next year. However, newspapers and magazines now account for less than 10% of media investment on a combined basis in 2019 and beyond, down from more than 50% as recently as 2004.
Amazon to open pop-up stores on UK high street
Amazon will open a number of pop-up stores across the UK, giving more than 100 small online businesses the chance to sell their products on the high street.

Fate of Philip Green’s Arcadia to be sealed this week
The fate of Sir Philip Green’s Arcadia group will be sealed on Wednesday with creditors set to vote on his proposed restructuring plans, but if the Pensions Regulator and landlords don’t back his plans the retail giant could go into administration.
If supported, Green’s rescue plan would see a number of Topshop, Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge and Burton stores close, while rents will be cut across another 194 stores at the Arcadia group. However, MPs want him to use his own wealth to fund the firm’s pension scheme, the BBC reports.
Originally, Arcadia confirmed 23 stores would close as part of the rescue deal, known as a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) but it was later revealed that another 25 stores would shut, under separate liquidation procedures.
Sir Philip’s wife, Lady Tina Green, who is Arcadia’s main shareholder, offered to inject £100m into the scheme during the next three years to bridge a shortfall in pension contributions. But the pensions regulator has doubts the plans will “adequately protect” the pensions of employees.
Arcadia has more than 566 locations in the UK and Ireland, employing 18,000 people.

Budweiser launches new campaign supporting LGBT+ community
Budweiser is launching its new ‘Fly the Flag’ campaign to support Pride’s mission on championing each group within the LGBT+ community.
The campaign is designed to celebrate diversity within the LGBT+ community, and to support the diverse groups under the LGBT+ banner, such as the asexual and pansexual communities.
The beer brand acknowledges there is great awareness of the rainbow flag – a universal symbol of Pride – but flags of other communities under the Pride umbrella don’t generally have the same recognition.
As part of the campaign, Budweiser has created a collection of limited-edition cups that feature designs of flags from nine individual communities, giving people within those groups the chance to celebrate at Pride during its 50th anniversary.
Budweiser will be handing out 200,000 of these cups for free along the Pride parade route in London on 6 July.
Martina Isella, senior brand manager at Budweiser, says: “Pride is a time for people to be proud and have freedom of expression, and this is what Budweiser as a brand is all about. We wanted to create a campaign in partnership with all the people that make up the wider LGBT+ community in mind, and we worked closely with our friends at Pride in London to ensure that this campaign was as relevant to as many as possible.”
ITV’s Love Island partners with Swizzles for season five
ITV’s Love Island has partnered with sweets brand Swizzles to create bespoke love hearts with recognisable sayings from the television programme such as ‘crack on’, ‘hun’ and ‘pied’, marking the first time Swizzels changed the messages on its love hearts.
More than 90,000 exclusive love hearts will be distributed to the public at key stations across London, Manchester and Cardiff today.
“Love Island is focused on finding love with someone special, as are our Love Hearts so it’s the perfect partnership. We’ve been making Love Hearts for over 60 years and this is the first time we’ve changed the messaging on our traditional Love Hearts to introduce well-loved phrases from a TV show,” says Sarah-Louise Heslop, marketing manager at Swizzels.
Echoing Heslop’s message is Paul Ridsdale, director of viewer marketing at ITV who says the broadcaster is always looking for innovative ways to help promote its key shows, “particularly when targeting younger audiences”.
“Partnering with Swizzels and their iconic Love Hearts sweets by adding our own distinctive Love Island phrases, was simply too good an opportunity to turn down,” he adds.

In 2015, Microsoft (MSFT) announced that Windows 10 would be the last named version of Windows ever. That thereafter, the company wouldn’t release huge megalithic new versions, as it always had before—it would, instead, trickle out improvements and new features as they were ready, piece by piece. “Windows will be delivered as a service, bringing new innovations and updates in an ongoing manner,” the company said.
Well, so much for that. Apparently, we’re back on the annual schedule.
The other baffling element is the name: Creators Update. As it turns out, most of the features that would have justified that title never saw the light of day. Evidently Microsoft figured it couldn’t have them ready in time for its big 2017 update, and abandoned them.
For example, there was supposed to be a cool app that would let you wave your phone around an object and automatically generate a 3-D model of it on the screen. There was supposed to be an app called Groove Music, something along the lines of Apple’s GarageBand. The promised People bar on the taskbar never materialized, either.
So what did make the cut? Lots of stuff that keeps up with other operating systems, and lots of small refinements. Here’s an overview.
Start menu, power, Action Center
A new column in the Start menu. Microsoft has moved the icons for Power (containing the Restart, Shut Down, and Sleep commands), Settings, File Explorer (new desktop window) icon, and Personal (containing “Change account settings,” “Lock,” and “sign out”). Instead of clogging up the main Start menu, they now appear in a special, skinny vertical stack of buttons at its far left. As a result, the main (middle) Start menu column lists only apps. This is good stuff.

Hide the apps. On the other hand, you can hide that list of apps, so that the entire Start menu is made of tiles. (You do that in Settings -> Personalize -> Start.)
Folders in the tiled area of your Start menu. Just drag one tile atop another to create a new folder. You’ve just created a tile that, when clicked, sprouts tiles showing its contents. Another win for common sense.
Control Panel is gone from the Start menu contextual menu. That’s an unenhancement for most people.
Action Center updates. Volume and brightness sliders now appear in the Action Center, saving you a click or two every time you tweak them.
Security
Dynamic lock. If you pair your smartphone (even an iPhone) with your PC using Bluetooth and turn this feature on, then the PC locks automatically when you walk away with your phone. It takes about 30 seconds for the computer to notice that you’re gone, so it’s not what you’d call Fort Knox security. But it’s better than no safety net at all.
Privacy settings for your apps’ access to your location, calendar, typing, and so on are now listed individually. OK, fine.
Design
More control over accent colors (title bars, Start menu, taskbar, action center); for example, you can specify any color you like. You’re no longer limited to a handful of shades.
Downloadable themes (desktop wallpaper photos with associated color schemes) in the Microsoft Store.
Night Light changes the screen tones from blue to warmer ones, on the theory that blue light messes up your sleep juice before bed.
In Settings -> Apps and features, you can now restrict Windows 10 to running apps that came from the Windows Store—and, in theory, have been proven to be safe by Microsoft. (See also: Gatekeeper on the Mac.)
Cortana
Microsoft’s voice assistant now understands your requests for recurring reminders. So you can say, for example, “Remind me every Friday at 5 p.m. to buy the party pizza,” or “Remind me about my anniversary once a year.”
More commands. You can now turn off, lock, restart, or sleep your PC computer with a voice command to Cortana. You can also adjust your computer’s playback volume by voice, and play/pause/skip tracks from the iHeartRadio and TuneIn apps. You can even ask Cortana, “What song is this?”
More apps can respond to Cortana commands, including Netflix (NFLX), Hulu, Twitter (TWTR), Pandora (P), and so on. (Here’s the complete list.) To learn what commands an app can understand, type its name into Cortana.
Full-screen Cortana. Once you’ve left your PC unused for at least 10 seconds, you can say, “Hey, Cortana” to see Cortana’s full-screen mode, where text is big enough to read from across the room.
You can also navigate the Windows 10 setup process by voice.

You can read ebooks from Microsoft’s new ebooks store (or other ePub-format documents) right in the browser. You can adjust the font, type size, or page color, and even have it read aloud to you.

Other Apps
Paint 3D is one of the few pieces left of the grand 3-D vision that Microsoft originally defined for the Creators Update. It’s a simple app that lets you create 3-D shapes by combining, turning, and resizing basic spheres, cones, rectangles, and so on.
If your PC has a touchscreen, and you have a stylus, you can draw a path in the Maps app; the app tells you its real-world distance.
The new Traffic Check icon in Maps produces an estimate of the driving time to your work address, if you’ve recorded it.
Draw or write on photos and videos in the Photos app, using your finger or a stylus. (If you write on a video, your writing will appear during playback at that spot.)

More “Insights” in Sticky Notes. The Sticky Notes app spot data types like fight numbers, email and web addresses, phone numbers, and stock abbreviations. Once those items turn blue, you can click them to produce a related command button. For example, click a phone number to see a Call button, or a date to see an Add Reminder button.
An evolving Settings app. There’s now a page called Apps, where you’ll find all of your programs’ settings. The redesigned System -> Display page has been reorganized. On the Devices -> Bluetooth & Other Devices page, you now get a single screen to manage all of your peripherals.
Maintenance
The Storage Space feature, if you turn it on, monitors your PC and automatically deletes temporary files and empties the Recycle Bin after 30 days.
Centralized troubleshooter. In Settings -> Update & security -> Troubleshoot, Microsoft has assembled icons for all of Windows’s troubleshooting wizards in one place.
A revamped security center, with a one-click Fresh Start button that reinstalls Windows when things are really messed up. (Unfortunately, this new app is called Windows Defender Security Center, which is not the same thing as the regular Windows Defender anti-malware app. Confusing.)
Specify longer work days, of up to 18 hours (“Active hours”), during which Windows will never restart to install an update.
Gaming
Game Mode is supposed to give you better frame rates (smoother game animation) by dedicating more PC resources to your game, but most people report the difference isn’t noticeable.
Beam: you can now broadcast the games you’re playing live to the internet, and interact with your admirers.
Productivity
A new Share menu. Now, if you want to send a page (or other material) to someone else, you have to look for Windows’s special Share icon. There’s no longer a Share panel on the side of the screen, and the Windows+H keystroke is dead.
Copy screenshot. Press Windows key+Shift+S to copy a rectangular area of your screen to your clipboard. (The existing screenshot shortcuts are still around.)
Accessibility upgrades include compatibility with Braille devices; availability of the Narrator during installation (and during the Windows Recovery Environment); and the keyboard shortcut for Narrator is now Ctrl+Windows key+Enter (rather than Windows key+Enter), in hopes of making it less likely that you’ll hit it accidentally.
Better ink. If you have a touchscreen and stylus, you can do more when you write on the screen. For example, you can add more to a drawing you’ve made earlier, you can erase only part of a line, and you get improved onscreen tools like protractor and ruler.
Microsoft says that it has also made zillions of under-the-hood changes: better stability and security, greater options for software companies to exploit Windows’s power.

So no, Creators Update isn’t nearly as big a deal as Microsoft originally intended—actually, not an especially big deal at all. But even though most of the changes are small, they build on Windows 10, which was already coherent, attractive, and stable.

The Age of Big Data
GOOD with numbers? Fascinated by data? The sound you hear is opportunity knocking.
 Mo Zhou was snapped up by I.B.M. last summer, as a freshly minted Yale M.B.A., to join the technology company’s fast-growing ranks of data consultants. They help businesses make sense of an explosion of data — Web traffic and social network comments, as well as software and sensors that monitor shipments, suppliers and customers — to guide decisions, trim costs and lift sales. “I’ve always had a love of numbers,” says Ms. Zhou, whose job as a data analyst suits her skills.
 To exploit the data flood, America will need many more like her. A report last year by the McKinsey Global Institute, the research arm of the consulting firm, projected that the United States needs 140,000 to 190,000 more workers with “deep analytical” expertise and 1.5 million more data-literate managers, whether retrained or hired.
 The impact of data abundance extends well beyond business. Justin Grimmer, for example, is one of the new breed of political scientists. A 28-year-old assistant professor at Stanford, he combined math with political science in his undergraduate and graduate studies, seeing “an opportunity because the discipline is becoming increasingly data-intensive.” His research involves the computer-automated analysis of blog postings, Congressional speeches and press releases, and news articles, looking for insights into how political ideas spread.
 The story is similar in fields as varied as science and sports, advertising and public health — a drift toward data-driven discovery and decision-making. “It’s a revolution,” says Gary King, director of Harvard’s Institute for Quantitative Social Science. “We’re really just getting under way. But the march of quantification, made possible by enormous new sources of data, will sweep through academia, business and government. There is no area that is going to be untouched.”
 Welcome to the Age of Big Data. The new megarich of Silicon Valley, first at Google and now Facebook, are masters at harnessing the data of the Web — online searches, posts and messages — with Internet advertising. At the World Economic Forum last month in Davos, Switzerland, Big Data was a marquee topic. A report by the forum, “Big Data, Big Impact,” declared data a new class of economic asset, like currency or gold.
 Rick Smolan, creator of the “Day in the Life” photography series, is planning a project later this year, “The Human Face of Big Data,” documenting the collection and uses of data. Mr. Smolan is an enthusiast, saying that Big Data has the potential to be “humanity’s dashboard,” an intelligent tool that can help combat poverty, crime and pollution. Privacy advocates take a dim view, warning that Big Data is Big Brother, in corporate clothing.
  What is Big Data? A meme and a marketing term, for sure, but also shorthand for advancing trends in technology that open the door to a new approach to understanding the world and making decisions. There is a lot more data, all the time, growing at 50 percent a year, or more than doubling every two years, estimates IDC, a technology research firm. It’s not just more streams of data, but entirely new ones. For example, there are now countless digital sensors worldwide in industrial equipment, automobiles, electrical meters and shipping crates. They can measure and communicate location, movement, vibration, temperature, humidity, even chemical changes in the air.
 Link these communicating sensors to computing intelligence and you see the rise of what is called the Internet of Things or the Industrial Internet. Improved access to information is also fueling the Big Data trend. For example, government data — employment figures and other information — has been steadily migrating onto the Web. In 2009, Washington opened the data doors further by starting Data.gov, a Web site that makes all kinds of government data accessible to the public.
 Data is not only becoming more available but also more understandable to computers. Most of the Big Data surge is data in the wild — unruly stuff like words, images and video on the Web and those streams of sensor data. It is called unstructured data and is not typically grist for traditional databases.

But the computer tools for gleaning knowledge and insights from the Internet era’s vast trove of unstructured data are fast gaining ground. At the forefront are the rapidly advancing techniques of artificial intelligence like natural-language processing, pattern recognition and machine learning.
 Those artificial-intelligence technologies can be applied in many fields. For example, Google’s search and ad business and its experimental robot cars, which have navigated thousands of miles of California roads, both use a bundle of artificial-intelligence tricks. Both are daunting Big Data challenges, parsing vast quantities of data and making decisions instantaneously.
 The wealth of new data, in turn, accelerates advances in computing — a virtuous circle of Big Data. Machine-learning algorithms, for example, learn on data, and the more data, the more the machines learn. Take Siri, the talking, question-answering application in iPhones, which Apple introduced last fall. Its origins go back to a Pentagon research project that was then spun off as a Silicon Valley start-up. Apple bought Siri in 2010, and kept feeding it more data. Now, with people supplying millions of questions, Siri is becoming an increasingly adept personal assistant, offering reminders, weather reports, restaurant suggestions and answers to an expanding universe of questions.
 To grasp the potential impact of Big Data, look to the microscope, says Erik Brynjolfsson, an economist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management. The microscope, invented four centuries ago, allowed people to see and measure things as never before — at the cellular level. It was a revolution in measurement.
 Data measurement, Professor Brynjolfsson explains, is the modern equivalent of the microscope. Google searches, Facebook posts and Twitter messages, for example, make it possible to measure behavior and sentiment in fine detail and as it happens.

In business, economics and other fields, Professor Brynjolfsson says, decisions will increasingly be based on data and analysis rather than on experience and intuition. “We can start being a lot more scientific,” he observes.
 There is plenty of anecdotal evidence of the payoff from data-first thinking. The best-known is still “Moneyball,” the 2003 book by Michael Lewis, chronicling how the low-budget Oakland A’s massaged data and arcane baseball statistics to spot undervalued players. Heavy data analysis had become standard not only in baseball but also in other sports, including English soccer, well before last year’s movie version of “Moneyball,” starring Brad Pitt.
 Retailers, like Walmart and Kohl’s, analyze sales, pricing and economic, demographic and weather data to tailor product selections at particular stores and determine the timing of price markdowns. Shipping companies, like U.P.S., mine data on truck delivery times and traffic patterns to fine-tune routing.
 Online dating services, like Match.com, constantly sift through their Web listings of personal characteristics, reactions and communications to improve the algorithms for matching men and women on dates. Police departments across the country, led by New York’s, use computerized mapping and analysis of variables like historical arrest patterns, paydays, sporting events, rainfall and holidays to try to predict likely crime “hot spots” and deploy officers there in advance.
 Research by Professor Brynjolfsson and two other colleagues, published last year, suggests that data-guided management is spreading across corporate America and starting to pay off. They studied 179 large companies and found that those adopting “data-driven decision making” achieved productivity gains that were 5 percent to 6 percent higher than other factors could explain.
 The predictive power of Big Data is being explored — and shows promise — in fields like public health, economic development and economic forecasting. Researchers have found a spike in Google search requests for terms like “flu symptoms” and “flu treatments” a couple of weeks before there is an increase in flu patients coming to hospital emergency rooms in a region (and emergency room reports usually lag behind visits by two weeks or so).
 Global Pulse, a new initiative by the United Nations, wants to leverage Big Data for global development. The group will conduct so-called sentiment analysis of messages in social networks and text messages — using natural-language deciphering software — to help predict job losses, spending reductions or disease outbreaks in a given region. The goal is to use digital early-warning signals to guide assistance programs in advance to, for example, prevent a region from slipping back into poverty.
 In economic forecasting, research has shown that trends in increasing or decreasing volumes of housing-related search queries in Google are a more accurate predictor of house sales in the next quarter than the forecasts of real estate economists. The Federal Reserve, among others, has taken notice. In July, the National Bureau of Economic Research is holding a workshop on “Opportunities in Big Data” and its implications for the economics profession.
 Big Data is already transforming the study of how social networks function. In the 1960s, Stanley Milgram of Harvard used packages as his research medium in a famous experiment in social connections. He sent packages to volunteers in the Midwest, instructing them to get the packages to strangers in Boston, but not directly; participants could mail a package only to someone they knew. The average number of times a package changed hands was remarkably few, about six. It was a classic demonstration of the “small-world phenomenon,” captured in the popular phrase “six degrees of separation.”
 Today, social-network research involves mining huge digital data sets of collective behavior online. Among the findings: people whom you know but don’t communicate with often — “weak ties,” in sociology — are the best sources of tips about job openings. They travel in slightly different social worlds than close friends, so they see opportunities you and your best friends do not.
 Researchers can see patterns of influence and peaks in communication on a subject — by following trending hashtags on Twitter, for example. The online fishbowl is a window into the real-time behavior of huge numbers of people. “I look for hot spots in the data, an outbreak of activity that I need to understand,” says Jon Kleinberg, a professor at Cornell. “It’s something you can only do with Big Data.”
 Big Data has its perils, to be sure. With huge data sets and fine-grained measurement, statisticians and computer scientists note, there is increased risk of “false discoveries.” The trouble with seeking a meaningful needle in massive haystacks of data, says Trevor Hastie, a statistics professor at Stanford, is that “many bits of straw look like needles.”
 Big Data also supplies more raw material for statistical shenanigans and biased fact-finding excursions. It offers a high-tech twist on an old trick: I know the facts, now let’s find ’em. That is, says Rebecca Goldin, a mathematician at George Mason University, “one of the most pernicious uses of data.”
 Data is tamed and understood using computer and mathematical models. These models, like metaphors in literature, are explanatory simplifications. They are useful for understanding, but they have their limits. A model might spot a correlation and draw a statistical inference that is unfair or discriminatory, based on online searches, affecting the products, bank loans and health insurance a person is offered, privacy advocates warn.
 Despite the caveats, there seems to be no turning back. Data is in the driver’s seat. It’s there, it’s useful and it’s valuable, even hip.
 Veteran data analysts tell of friends who were long bored by discussions of their work but now are suddenly curious. “Moneyball” helped, they say, but things have gone way beyond that. “The culture has changed,” says Andrew Gelman, a statistician and political scientist at Columbia University. “There is this idea that numbers and statistics are interesting and fun. How does Google's Pixel 4 smartphone camera compare to the iPhone 11 Pro?

At its recent product announcement event in New York City, Google showed off a handful of new gear. But, the company dedicated considerable time—and presumably money spent to hire iconic portrait photographer Annie Leibovitz—showing off the Pixel 4 smartphone’s new camera. That emphasis makes sense. Consumers still indicate that photo quality is one of the most-important factors they use to pick a new device. And Google is coming off of a very strong showing in the Pixel 3, which was (at least as far as I was concerned at the time) the absolute best smartphone camera.
The Pixel 4 adds some more AI-powered smarts, relying increasingly on its software to determine the overall look of the final image. And while the camera has some moments where it’s truly excellent, I ran into a few growing pains as Google tries to calculate its way to perfect photos.

On paper, the Pixel 4’s camera doesn’t seem all that different from the hardware that came before it. The primary exception is the notable addition of a telephoto lens, which Google intends to improve performance specifically when it comes to zooming and portrait mode. The shooter’s competition, however, is stiffer this year: Apple seems to have corrected some the over-zealous HDR tech that made iPhone XS images look unrealistic and unnatural at times, and the Cupertino company promises to further improve the iPhone 11 Pro’s already-very-good camera when its detail-enhancing Deep Fusion tech arrives in the next iOS update.
Image quality

Google doesn’t pull punches when it comes to computational photography, which relies more on processing power and algorithms than pure hardware performance. The company makes it abundantly clear that the software magic that happens during and after you press the shutter has become extremely important in determining the look of the final image.
Like almost every smartphone camera at this point, pressing the shutter doesn’t simply take one photo. Instead, it captures a burst and combines information from those images into one finished file. This “smart HDR” tech does a lot of good: It can prevent highlights from getting blown out, or flatten out a super-contrasty scene that could lose crucial details. But, as with iPhone 11 Pro, it can be unpredictable.

In good conditions shooting with the main wide-angle camera, I prefer the images that come out of the Pixel 4 to those from the iPhone 11 Pro. It’s close, but the Pixel’s camera still feels more neutral and natural to me. I don’t notice the HDR effect that can make subjects look unrealistic—and sometimes even cartoonish—as much as I do with the iPhone. This is especially useful for users who edit their photos after taking them (something very few typical users do).

Google made a few welcome improvements to its overall HDR experience as well. When you tap the screen to focus on an object in the image, two sliders now pop up for adjusting the brightness of the scene. One slider affects the overall exposure (how bright or dark everything looks) in the scene, while the other simply affects the shadows. That second slider is extremely useful. It allows you to do things like taking silhouette photos in which the subject is virtually blacked out while the background (usually the bright sky) stays properly exposed.

You can also achieve the opposite effect in which you can brighten up a dark foreground subject without blowing out a bright sky in the background. In a situation like the one pictured below, you’d typically lose some of those nice yellow leaf details to shadow unless you brightened the whole image and blew out the sky. Adjusting the shadow slider allows you to bring up the exposure on the leaves while leaving the sky alone.
That slider is one of my favorite additions to the Pixel 4 camera, and it’s a trend I’d love to see continue as we go forward into the future of HDR all the time on everything.
When the shooting conditions get tricky, however, the Pixel 4 has some real quirks.
The flickr effect
Most artificial lighting flickers, but your brain does a good job of making the glow seem continuous. The pulsing effect, however, is more difficult for digital cameras to negate, and the Pixel 4 seems to have more trouble in this arena than its competition.
In the video above, you’ll notice some dark bands going across the image. This kind of thing isn’t out-of-the-ordinary with artificial light sources, which have a generally imperceptible flicker to coincide with the 60 Hz electrical current flowing through them. Dedicated digital cameras, however, typically have “flicker detection” to help combat it, and even the iPhone 11 Pro does a better job of mitigating the effect.

With the Pixel 4, I noticed it in a variety of locations and artificial light sources. It’s subtle, most of the time, but if you have a bright light source in the frame of the picture or video, it can push the shutter speed faster than 1/60th of a second, which is when the bands start to creep in.
When I switched to a manual camera mode in the Lightroom app and used a slower shutter speed, it disappeared. In scenes like this, the iPhone seems to use its HDR+ tech to keep at least one frame in the mix with a shutter speed slow enough to stop this from happening. Once I figured out the circumstances that brought it on, I shot the example below, which shows it very clearly.

The flaw isn’t a deal breaker since it only appears in specific circumstances, but it’s very annoying when it does.
White balancing act

Another area where our brains and eyes routinely outperform cameras: color balance. If you’re in a room with both artificial light and a window, the illumination may look fairly consistent to your eye, but render as orange and blue, respectively, to a camera.
Smartphones often try to split the difference when it comes to white balance unless you mess with it on your own. The Pixel 4, however, analyzes the scene in front of it and uses AI to try and recognize important objects in the frame. So, if it notices a face, it will try and get the white balance right on the person. That’s a good tactic.

Generally, I think the Pixel 4 does an excellent job when it comes to white balance, except when it gets it very wrong. Move around the iPhone 11 Pro camera, and the scene’s overall color cast tends to stay mostly consistent. Do the same with the Pixel 4, and its overall white balance can shift drastically, even when you only slightly move the camera. Above, the grid-style screenshot show a series of photos I took in succession under unchanging conditions. I moved the phone subtly as I shot, and you can see the really profound color shift. Again, this primarily happens when shooting under artificial light.
As long as you pay attention and notice the change before snapping the shot, it’s totally fine and the Pixel does a great job. It’s also easy to correct later on if you’re willing to open an editing app. But, on a few occasions, I ended up with a weirdly yellow photo I didn’t expect.

The new telephoto lens is roughly twice the focal length of the Pixel’s standard camera, which effectively gives you a 2x optical zoom. It has an f/2.4 aperture, compared to the improved f/2.0 (lower numbers let in more light) portrait lens on the iPhone 11 Plus. It’s only a fraction of a stop, however, so it’s unlikely to make a huge impact, but it’s a reminder that Apple has been doing telephoto lenses for some time now and is already refining while Google is just getting started.

Like we said earlier, the telephoto lens counts zooming as one of its primary functions. The phone gives you the option to zoom up to 8x by combining digital and optical technology. Google claims pinching to get closer now actually gives you better image quality than simply taking a wider photo and cropping in, which has historically provided better results. I found this statement accurate. “Zooming” has come a long way on smartphone cameras, but you shouldn’t expect magic. You’ll still end up with ugly choppy “artifacts” in the images that look like you’ve saved and re-saved the photo too many times as a JPEG.
When you peep at the images on a smaller screen, like Instagram, however, they look impressive, and that’s ultimately probably the most important display condition for a smartphone camera in 2019.
If you zoom a lot, the Pixel beats the iPhone on the regular. It’s even slightly easier to hold steady due to the improved images stabilization system when you’re zoomed all the way to 8x.

The other big draw of the telephoto lens comes in the form of improved portrait mode. Even with the single lens on the Pixel 3, Google already did a very impressive job faking the background blur that comes from shallow depth of field photography. Predictably, adding a second lens to let it better calculate depth in a scene improves its performance.
If you really want to notice the jump, try shooting a larger object or a person from farther back than the simple head-and-torso shot for which portrait mode was originally developed. Using portrait mode for larger objects is a new skill for the Pixel 4 and it does a good job of mitigating the inherent limitations of the tech. Any weirdness or artifacts like oddly-sharp areas or rogue blobs of blur typically tend to show up around the edges of objects or in fine details like hair or fur. The closer you get to your subject, the harder you’re making the camera work and the more likely you are to notice something weird or out of place.

Overall, the Pixel 4’s portrait mode looks more natural than the iPhone 11 Pro, but it struggles more with edges and stray hairs. In headshots, the areas around the hair typically give away the Pixel 4’s tricks right away. (The iPhone 11 Pro gets around those edge issues by adding a “dreamy” blur across most of the image.) The Pixel’s overall colors and contrast are generally better because they don’t try to emulate different types of lighting like the iPhone does. But, when you get a truly ugly edge around a subject’s face or hair with the Pixel 4, it can quickly ruin the effect.

If you’re only posting your portrait mode shot on Instagram, those rough edges may not really play for your followers. Viewing them on a laptop screen or larger, however, makes them obvious.

The Pixel 4 does give you almost immediate access to both the fake blur images and the regular photo in your library. Portrait mode takes a few seconds to process, so you can’t see those immediately. Considering the amount of processing it’s doing, that’s understandable—and also the case with the iPhone—but if you’re trying to nail exactly the right expression, you can’t really check your results in real time.
Night Sight

When Google debuted its impressive low-light shooting mode, Night Sight, in the Pixel 3, it was incredibly impressive. Google has clearly continued to refine its performance and, even with the iPhone 11 Pro adding its own version of the tech, the Pixel 4 still maintains a considerable advantage.
You’ll still have to swipe over to the Night Sight mode in order to enable it, as opposed to the iPhone, which springs it on you automatically when it thinks the conditions are right. I like having more control over what I’m doing, so I prefer the Pixel’s approach, especially since these night modes require long exposures that can result in blurry photos if you—or the objects in the scene—can’t hold still.
Compared to the iPhone’s Night Mode, the Night Sight’s colors are more accurate and the scenes just look more natural. Ultimately, this one will come down to personal preference, but I prefer the Pixel 4’s results over the iPhone 11 Pro’s.
During the camera presentation, Google flat-out said that it hopes you’ll only use the camera “flash” as a flashlight. I abided by this rule. The flash is not good, just like every smartphone camera flash photo that came before it. It’s useful if you really need it—especially if you don’t mind converting images to black and white after the fact—but you can ultimately just leave it turned off forever.
As an addition to Night Sight, Google also added functionality that makes it easier to shoot night sky photos that show off stars and the Milky Way—if you know what you’re doing. I didn’t test this feature because I didn’t have access to truly dark sky, and the weather hasn’t really cooperated. If you’re planning to use this feature, you should plan to use a tripod—or at least balance the phone on a stable object—since it still requires long exposures. Ultimately, I love that the company added this feature and I look forward to seeing what people create with it, but it’s a specialized thing that I imagine most users won’t try more than a few times.

When the Pixel 3 shipped without a telephoto lens, I didn’t really miss it. I do, however, have to wonder why Google would ship the Pixel 4 without the super-wide lens found on the iPhone 11 Pro and other high-end smartphones.
The super-wide is easy to abuse if the unique perspective blinds you to the inherent distortion and overall just kinda wacky perspective it offers. But, there are times when it comes in really handy. If you’re trying to shoot a massive landscape without creating a panorama, or you’re just taking a photo in really tight quarters, the extra width makes a tangible difference.
Ultimately, I advocate that people do the vast majority of their shooting with the standard wide-angle camera no matter which phone they choose, because the overall performance and image quality are typically far better than the other lenses. But, I like options, and a super-wide lens lets you achieve a perspective you physically can’t get by simply backing up.

The Pixel 4 has left us in a tough situation. The image quality, color reproduction, and detail are really excellent—most of the time. The quirks that pop up, however, really do have a tangible effect on the overall usability of the camera as a whole. If you’re the type of shooter who is careful to pay attention to your scene and edits your photos after you shoot, then the Pixel is the best option for the most part. The more neutral colors and contrast take edits better than those on iPhone files, which come straight out of the camera looking more processed.
Ultimately, though, we’re in a time when smartphone camera quality has largely leveled off. I haven’t mentioned the Samsung cameras in this review for the most part, because I find their files overly processed with too much sharpening and aggressive contrast and saturation levels. But, a large contingent of people like that. At this point, there isn’t enough difference between overall performance and image quality on the Pixel 4 to jump ship from your preferred platform—only to eek out a slight edge on images that come straight out of the camera.

Delivering Blown Minds: What the WWDC 2019 Keynote Means For You

Opening its Worldwide Developer Conference for a 33rd year, Apple’s keynote Monday did its best to rival Avengers: Endgame both in duration and in eliciting gasps from an enraptured audience. By the frequency of applause lines alone, Apple’s announcements for 2019 have knocked us at Big Nerd Ranch off our feet.
For developers or the developer-adjacent in the Apple community, there’s no shortage of news affecting each of the platforms that will affect the work you do this year and in the years ahead.
With 14 new frameworks and hundreds of new APIs, you’d hardly be alone in feeling overwhelmed. We want to share with you what announcements we’ve been thinking about the most, and dive into them deeper over the coming days and weeks here on our blog.
I Want to Break Free
As is now tradition, the satellites — Apple TV, Apple Watch, and HomePod — lead the event as an appetizer. All three devices are being given room to leave their awkward adolescence and grow into their own.
Apple TV will allow associating users of a device with their preferences and tastes in your app, making it function far better as a device for the whole family (both in your own homes and in your customers’ homes!). So too follows HomePod, using the messages, music, and, most importantly, Siri Shortcuts for the correct user in a home. Enhanced single sign-on, including support for more telecoms and a new Sign in with Apple, grease the wheels on what is probably the hardest part of building Apple TV apps today.
Apple Watch will soon set off on its own, gaining more independence from a paired iPhone. Your apps can sever ties with their containing iPhone apps and be installed from a new fun-size App Store directly on the watch. Apps will install — and data will sync — far faster in this new world: no more waiting painfully long for that Bluetooth connection! Streaming audio and extended background time also top the list of making speedier and more useful wrist-based apps.
Finally, a major frustration with watch development is being tackled: say goodbye to the constraints and limitations of building out your app’s UI with WatchKit, and say hello to SwiftUI. It hopes to marry the best parts of WatchKit’s ease of getting started with the real scale of Apple’s other platforms. We’ll talk more about SwiftUI by the end of this post.
Long Dark Mode Tea-Time of the Soul
Mobile platforms exist in a paradox of maturity and progress — where we rely on them to be with us all day, yet excitedly awaiting the shiny new thing every year like clockwork. This is no better representation of this than in Dark Mode for iPhone and iPad, coming to iOS 13 in its 12th iteration what took the Mac 18 years. Finally, checking your texts from bed won’t sear your eyes.
But these design changes aren’t simply a new coat of paint. They give developers a renewed opportunity to embrace iOS adaptivity and meets their users where they are, whether they have vision impairment, motor limitations, or are simply in a dark room. Your customers will notice when your app meets their needs in this way.
So, too, will they notice speed when they’re trying to get things done. A whole host of launch time, download time, and download size improvements enable packing even more into your apps. With improvements like this year-over-year, it’s no wonder that iOS 12 sits at an 85% penetration: users love using the apps you make on their devices that are constantly getting better.
For developers, we’ve seen a theme of addressing common pain points. The SDK has been updated massively for affecting how you build, react to changes, and update the content in your UI, taking inspiration from popular patterns from the open-source community. These areas are sources of bugs in all our apps, and the iOS SDKs are here to help with data transform in the Combine framework, diffing for UITableView and UICollectionView, and layout composition in UICollectionView.
It’s not just iOS, anymore, either. iPad has restored its birthright with iPadOS — the same iOS we already know, souped up for larger screens just like tvOS is for TVs. Banner features include multi-window support and further integration of drag and drop. With a simple shift in API, your one app will be able to host multiple instances of its UI without all the bookkeeping traditional window management entails.
Developers that deal with any kind of user input will benefit from deep changes to text input, particularly with rich text support that would previously take hundreds of developer hours. And with still deeper file management, applications that work with a document paradigm become more useful and allow you to focus on what makes your app great.
There’s also been major developments to address the frustrations from last year’s launch of Siri Shortcuts. Parameterizing shortcuts lets you make your app offer more of its features to voice interaction, without the typical headaches of user discovery.
Mac Coming Off The Mountain
For years, the Mac has been on walkabout, learning what it means to be a desktop platform in an age of friendliness, security, and stability. At times, the refocusing on simplicity and user consent have left the Mac passionate in the cold. Developers have felt this cold shoulder too, and often avoided what they saw as a platform of cruft and complexity.
But it’s time to remember what makes the Mac great: customization, automation, and performance. Of course, the elephant in the room here is Project Catalyst — Apple’s new method of deploying iPad apps as great Mac apps, with augmentations to handle all the features that make the Mac, the Mac. With the simplicity, convenience, and passion mobile apps have brought to users, your team can benefit from your investment in mobile on the desktop as well.
Swift Takes Flight
Now five years old, Swift is ready to take a major leap forward. By shipping it with and integrated into the OS, Apple is ready to share the Swift innovations they’ve been working on internally all this time.
Many of this years’ brand new frameworks are in Swift, and these are no small additions. Combine is a new generation of data flow management. CryptoKit brings a stable API to the world-class cryptography implementation on Apple’s platforms. RealityKit further lowers the barrier to entry of putting 3D content into AR. All of these are made to make your applications simpler, safer, and faster — just like Swift brought to your application code itself.
A great, big, heaving, “Finally!” was heard as Xcode fully integrates with the open-source Swift Package Manager and its package ecosystem. For years, we’ve relied on third-party tools to manage dependencies for our apps. And though the efforts of those volunteer teams have been incredible, there’s nothing quite like being built into the platform IDE.
With an uncompromised UI in Xcode, you can integrate, audit, and build dependency code from your team or open-source into your app. You can even use Swift packages to organize your own app code easier than ever. (And, yes, we can hear you Java folks snickering in the corner!) It’s hard to overstate how much of an effect this will have on our day-to-day work as developers.
Then, much like Swift’s unveiling in 2014, Apple decided to surprise (and terrify) us a bit. SwiftUI is clearly inspired by the functional-reactive wave affecting much of the software industry, but with additional Swift flavor, embracing the safety and performance that are a big part of the language. It eschews the traditional compile-run-debug loop of Apple’s platforms with a supercharged next generation of the Interface Builder that responds live to changes in your code, and can even manipulate your Swift code directly.
The things that make a modern mobile app great — speed, interactivity, localization, and reacting to changes from the internet or the device environment — are all defaults in SwiftUI. And the most common sources of bugs, errors, and crashes? Like in Swift itself — gone, by design. There’s a huge opportunity for us as developers to learn how to leverage this in the future to make better apps in less time and with less code, and we’re going to have a lot to say about it over the coming weeks and months.
What’s important to keep in mind is that your investment in Apple’s platforms — in learning UIKit, in learning Swift, and more — has not been in vain. Opportunities abound for being able to simplify the complex parts of your apps, but that’s the further-off future. Today, Swift improvements also reflect back into the native UI toolkits and will remain first-class for many years.
Signed, Sealed, Delivered
In building a platform, you make a kind of a promise. You promise flexibility and customers, sure, to get folks in the door — but to you keep them around, you make a promise to keep making things better.
Sometimes these promises go ignored. Sometimes they get broken. And sometimes, dramatically, they are fulfilled. If you read our WWDC Expectations: Hopes and Dreams, we’ve seen nearly all of our expectations and 5 of our out-of-this-world dreams.
Nothing speaks to Apple’s investment in these platforms quite like this years’ announcements. Problems that have plagued us as developers for years have been solved in novel and exciting ways. And for the years to come, we can watch as the future of app development unfolds, making our jobs easier, allowing us to focus on what matters in our applications, and maybe — every so often — blow a few minds.

5G: What to know, why you should be excited, and how it will impact you | Soukacatv.com
5G is coming soon. And although it seems pretty clear Apple is going to skip the next-gen wireless service in the 2019 iPhone, most Android manufacturers have made one thing certain: they’ll have at least one 5G offering as early as summer 2019.
We’ve been hearing about how 5G is bringing the next-generation of wireless service for years now. However, with casual internet browsing already at incredible speeds, paired with healthy download times on even the largest 4K movie and TV files, it seems ambiguous as to how impactful 5G will be on our day-to-day lives.

Let’s dive in and breakdown why 5G is going to be critically important in the next decade.
What 5G can do for you
First and foremost, 5G is obviously about faster speeds. But why exactly this matters is critical to understanding the baseline difference between 4G LTE and 5G NR. NR is the new wireless standard on which all carriers will operate their network — we’ll dive into this a bit later.
At full signal, 4G LTE can bring some seriously impressive speeds to any connected device. Even a 4K TV show can be streamed without too much buffering. However, drop the signal down to a bar or two and your results start to vary dramatically. Music streaming is largely seamless on 4G, where even full albums can be played within a few seconds at just one bar of LTE. This same responsiveness will come to entire 4K video libraries with 5G.

On the other hand, a full 5G signal could in-theory provide multi-gigabit broadband. Theoretical numbers are rarely met in real-world use, but to suggest average metropolitan 5G speeds are at least consistently above 750 Mbps doesn’t seem like a far stretch.
Strictly speaking from within the United States, this is a win for both urban dwellers to even the most rural locations. For those of you in LA or NY, you’ll get to experience a new generation of internet services previously deemed too unstable under current WiFi and 4G standards. For those in more secluded sections of the country, even one bar of 5G service could provide you with faster internet than you’ve ever had access to before.
Goodbye, latency
Remember all those video game streaming services where you could harness the power of a high-end GPU via the cloud? They still exist, but they won’t take off until 5G becomes widespread.
Currently, low gigabit internet availability paired with still high latency speeds prevent cloud based gaming from being a worthwhile, enjoyable experience. However, perhaps the most promising is NVIDIA’s GeForce Now, which still requires an invite to participate in the beta. When 5G starts rolling out though, we’ll be close to a public release. That’ll be when even the lowest paying connected costumers should have internet speeds comparable to today’s top-end LTE performance with significantly lower latency.
Wave modulations are not created equal
But when it comes to signal strength? Well that’s a different story entirely…
5G utilizes previously inaccessible high-frequency millimeter radio waves between 30 and 300 GHz. Advertised and marketed as “mmWave”, they have remained dormant due to high costs and strict government regulation. Millimeter waves are grouped tighter, at a significantly more compact capacity than the standard sub-5 GHz radio waves used currently. Although these new network waves allow for tremendous speed increases, higher frequencies have greater difficulty with object penetration. It’s why 2.4 GHz WiFi is best for a home with thick cement walls, while 5 GHz is ideal for achieving peak speeds in an optimal network environment.
As a result, the 5G infrastructure is going to be a little more complex than 4Gs to enable and distribute. Signal boosters and specially designed equipment will be required at public venues such as stadiums, malls, theaters and more. While it may seem like a downer at first, understand that when the full infrastructure is developed, these side effects will be mostly mitigated.
Big changes, new devices
So what does this mean for the future of WiFi? 5G will probably mark the end of traditional WiFi versus cellular signal connections. All devices will run on the 5G NR standard. This should open up a new-era of truly “always connected” mobile devices. Rather than hunt for WiFi on your iPad and an LTE signal for your iPhone, you’ll simply seek 5G. Though the story spans much farther than just iPads and smartphones. Devices will simply remain connected regardless of location, which will usher in a generations of laptops with 5G. 5G Chromebooks and MacBooks anyone?
As for what exactly NR stands for? Nothing too fancy, simply “new radio”. Primarily, the acronym’s function is to represent the universality of the “new” network standard across all different carriers and service provides
Unlike the early days of 4G, where LTE, WiMAX and HSPA+ left customers in a confused mess, 5G will all run upon this “NR” standard. In fact, you might remember T-Mobile CEO John Legere getting into a bit of a Twitter rage over Verizon’s advertisement of “5G” home internet service for not using the agreed upon industry standard and having awfully strict requirements.
Even Verizon admitted they would be switching these early customers over to the NR standard “soon”, when the required home equipment was ready for consumer use.
Ultimately, 5G will open up an array of internet possibilities currently impossible with today’s network standards. Medical surgeries preformed over the internet, AAA games streamed at maximum graphic capacity to your Google Chromebook, fully wireless VR and AR streamed to a headset… The possibilities with 5G are just speculation today, but the potential for fruition is now more real than ever.
Daily speeds
Qualcomm estimates “typical speeds” will fall in the 1.4 Gbps range, as the NR standard technically calls for peak speeds of 20 Gbps. Here’s Qualcomm breaking down some potential numbers customers will experience.
Beyond network capacity improvements, there are significant gains for 5G NR capable devices when compared with LTE devices, including:
Browsing download speeds increasing from 56 Mbps for the median 4G user. To more than 490 Mbps for the average 5G user. A gain of about 900 percent
7x faster responsiveness. Median browsing download latency reduced from 116ms to 17ms
File download speeds of 100 Mbps for the 10th percentile 5G user. Meaning that 90 percent of 5G users have download speeds of more than 100 Mbps. Compared to 8 Mbps for the 10th percentile LTE user.
Median streaming video quality increasing from 2K/30 FPS/8-bit color for LTE users. To 8K/120 FPS/10-bit color and beyond for 5G users.
5G in your area?
Now, the final question that remains is when exactly you’ll see the network coming to your area. There’s only two countries in the race to deliver widespread 5G first: the United States and China.
The latter has been all-systems go with their Made in China 2025 strategic plan, set to prioritize tech sector growth within the nation drastically over the next ten years (first proposed in 2015). As a result, China hopes they can push their state-funded 5G infrastructure to a global best faster than any other nation. In the US, private companies will of course handle the estimated $200 billion per year rollout costs.
Ultimately, people just want to know when they can purchase their first 5G device. While a better question might be when you can purchase a good 5G device, that still remains unknown. At the very least, you’ll see the first Android phones with Qualcomm’s new 5G capable 855 SoC in 2019 from Samsung and OnePlus.

Apple Watch Series 4 review: Bigger, faster and even mo...

I am of two minds on the Apple Watch. On one hand, I think that it's the best overall smartwatch you can currently buy. And to that end, the Series 4 -- now available starting at $399 -- is the best Apple Watch to date. 
After wearing one for weeks, it's worked really well, but it's not as tremendous a leap forward from last year's model as you might think. And the Apple Watch is no closer to being a clear must-have device than it was before, unless you value the possible benefits of new health features. The 2018 model adds a nice slate of upgrades:
Thinner design with bigger, almost no-bezel watch faces: Larger 44mm and 40mm displays fit into the same general case sizes that previously held 42mm and 38mm ones, respectively.
Lightning-fast speed: The Series 4 is fast. Response time for nearly everything that doesn't require an online ping is effectively instantaneous. The improvement versus Series 2 and earlier models is particularly dramatic.
Fall detection: The Watch will alert loved ones and EMS when you take a serious tumble (but Apple doesn't guarantee it, and it's not on by default unless you're 65 or older).
Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG): This feature, coming soon via a software update, amps up the Watch's already impressive heart-rate monitoring features with a full-on, FDA-cleared on-demand EKG that will check for heart arrhythmia.
On the other hand, the Apple Watch Series 4 doesn't address some of the longstanding frustrations that have dogged the platform since day one. Specifically:
Battery life remains stuck at little more than a day (two days max, if you're lucky).
No sleep tracking: Because the watch needs to be charged overnight, that effectively kills sleep tracking options.
No always-on watch face: To save battery life, the watch face is dark most of the time.
Despite a handful of new data-rich watch faces, the apps that use these faces are limited, and deeper customization -- including having a watch face store like rivals do -- remains MIA on Apple Watch.
To be clear, none of these are futurist fantasies. Rival products from from Fitbit, Samsung and others are starting to last for days -- with promises of weeks between charges (in more pared-down watch modes) made by Qualcomm's new chip that's powering upcoming Google Wear OS competitors. And those same products offer sleep tracking, dozens or hundreds of watch face options, and always-on timekeeping, too.

But back to the positives: if you're looking for the fastest, most seamless, best-connected smartwatch around, this is it. And, yes, on a watch, speed matters. And the Apple Watch's audio capabilities are improved: speaker and microphone are stellar.
New features like automatic workout tracking, walkie-talkie communications between watches, raise to talk (no more "hey Siri") and better support for music and podcasts are all welcome additions to the Apple Watch. But those are part of the 2018 WatchOS 5 upgrade, so they're also available on older Series 1, Series 2 and Series 3 models.
To that end, if you're not a workout junkie, or someone who's particularly interested in the safety aspects of fall detection or EKG-level heart monitoring, the Apple Watch Series 3 -- available starting at $279 (£279, AU$399) -- is still a worthy option. That model retains the standalone cellular option, too, if you want to occasionally go phone-free.
The Apple Watch Series 4 starts at $399 (£399, AU$599) for the standard model, and $499 (£499, AU$749) for the LTE model. Models climb up from there depending on size, material (stainless steel versus aluminum), band choices and additional styles (Nike+, Hermes).  
Existing Series 3 owners shouldn't feel a rush to upgrade. And Series 1 and Series 2 owners should start with that free update to WatchOS 5, of course. But if you're looking for considerably faster speed, a bigger and more information-rich watch face, and better health and workout features, the Apple Watch Series 4 is a worthy upgrade. 
However, iPhone owners looking for a smartwatch with longer battery life or sleep tracking should check out alternatives like the Fitbit Versa.
The original Modular watch face is still on Apple Watch Series 4, and it's definitely more minimal than Infograph.

My favorite thing: Speed
The first Apple Watch in 2015 was slow. Loading apps was its limiting factor. The lightning-quick, smooth feel of the Apple Watch Series 4 almost feels like a given, since it's how Apple products tend to feel out of the box. It's as fast, now, as an iPhone or iPad. It feels automatic. Last year's Series 3 was also fast, and it's still fine. The Series 4 does it one better, so that loading times no longer seem to exist much at all.
Speed is probably more key on a watch than on a phone, if you're counting on quick glances and instant info, I can't think of a better wearable.
The Apple Watch interface design is mostly the same as last year, even with WatchOS 5. There are some key improvements: notifications now stack by type, much like on the iPhone in iOS 12, and it really helps with clutter. The Control Center (quick settings accessed via swipe-up) can also be reordered, front-loading most-needed controls (sadly, no new shortcuts can be added).
Speaking of shortcuts, Siri Shortcuts -- which allow you to program activities with simple commands -- are supported on the Apple Watch, but I haven't found myself compelled to dive into using them yet.
My next favorite thing: Audio
More than the watch's refined design, I truly appreciate the way it handles speakerphone functions. A louder speaker truly helps with quick Siri requests (which I really do, on my wrist, when setting timers or alarms or quick tasks). A new raise-to-speak function in WatchOS 5 means I can lift and talk really closely into the watch and not have to say "Hey Siri," and it usually works. But for phone calls at home, when my phone's lost somewhere and my sister or mom calls, I can talk with the whole family via my wrist and it works perfectly -- it's no different than a speakerphone call on the phone.
My good feelings on audio extend to the Apple Watch as iPod. Last year with WatchOS 4, the watch autosynced albums via Apple Music during overnight charging to fill an instant on-the-go library, and it made me use the watch for music far more than I expected. Podcasts and third-party audio apps can now work offline on the watch, too, and with a pair of AirPods (or other Bluetooth headphones, but AirPods pair and swap between iPhone and watch mostly seamlessly), it's a perfect experience. I also appreciate the watch's easy access to music controls when in a workout.
Bigger screen is better, but untapped watch face possibilities
The Apple Watch S4 is the biggest design update since the watch launched in 2015. Apple followed the model of its recent iPhone designs here: The Series 4 cuts down the bezel surrounding the screen versus last year's Series 3, effectively squeezing larger screens into the same size chassis. It's still a squircle, but the look is much more refined. It's thinner, too: Apple cut the depth of the Watch from 11.4mm to 10.7mm, so it's less bulbous on your wrist.
The Apple Watch still comes in "small" and "large," but thanks to the economy of sizes from the redesign, the smallest new Apple Watch has a display that's close to the size of the previous large one. The new watch sizes are 40 and 44mm, versus the previous 38 and 42mm.

The larger display on both sizes of Apple Watch models means bigger, more beautiful watch faces. But it doesn't mean there's all that much that's new. There are only two signature new watch faces exclusive to the Series 4 -- Infograph and Infograph Modular -- and those faces show off new graphically rich complications for extra information on-watch. However, not all watch apps can take advantage of them yet, and even those that do aren't as helpful as I expected. Heart rate, for instance, doesn't show my heart rate or my resting heart rate on the watch face itself. Instead, it's just a heart-shaped icon I can tap to launch the heart rate app.
Several weather apps can use the new "Infograph Modular" watch face's center information pane to show daily weather trends, but few other apps can. And the areas where these complications are laid out can't be moved around. For more thoughts, read my deeper dive into the new watch faces.
Other watch faces look bigger and prettier. New motion faces are full-screen, and the Kaleidoscope face looks brilliant and big. Round watch faces fill more of the available space. But they're not fundamentally different, or any more customizable. I'd love to make my own styles of new watch faces, and build layouts that worked for me, using information I need. Apple has 25 watch faces to choose from and thousands of ways to tweak them and customize them, and yet I still find my ability to make my own perfect at-a-glance watch face is challenged.
I love the bezel-minimal, curved-corner display on the new watch, but with all the available space it now has, and the speed of the processor inside, Apple could be doing a lot more.
