I just imagine this person who comes from this planet. A traveller. This traveller appears somewhat human, but upon closer inspection is definitely not. Amongst one of their most non-human traits, they have the power to entirely change their body if about to die, making them functionally immortal (there are rules about this, but who knows the reality of how often this process -- called regeneration -- can occur). The traveller is established to have been exiled from their home planet from the word go, and seems to have stumbled over earth as a secondary home of some sort, alongside their grandchild

and then the traveller takes on a couple of humans, not intentionally, but it's not so bad, travelling with your family and new friends. But then their grandchild finds a reason to stay somewhere, so the traveller makes the choice to leave them behind, the first time this choice has been made without the consent of a companion. And then the humans leave, but it's okay, because there's a couple more humans coming onboard

that's relatively the template -- a strained, often antagonistic, relationship with their own species, and an ever-growing fondness for the humans who travel with them, whom they realise eventually do need to leave to live their own lives, because this is no life for mortals, but that's okay. Except increasingly it becomes more and more difficult to let go of these companions. many of them travel with them for a good long while, and maybe even expect it to last forever, but it never does. The traveller knows forever (or, near enough), and mortals couldn't comprehend it.

it's a manageable system. It's not exactly lonely, because there's always more companions to not fill in the gaps of the ones who left, but to take up new space. And the person (Doctor, their name is) even travels with a member of their own species for awhile, for the first time since they left their grandkid to a different life, and that's a whole other sort of joy, to be with someone who really understands

brewing in the back of all of this there's civil wars, and a growing hostility between their species and a species whose sole goal is to eradicate all life that isn't like them. And eventually the traveller has to leave earth (after eight or so lifetimes, it's hard to keep track sometimes) in order to fight in this war. and during the course of the war (which is incomprehensibly vast to mortal people), the former traveller's species change and twist into a version of themselves that would rather the entire universe is destroyed than accede. And so this person who is now something else, makes the choice to end it

but whatever this person did, and whatever this person became, is so antithetical to who this person usually is, that they completely repress the existence of this lifetime. For several lifetimes after, it simply does not exist

the person then changes again, but everything is different. Gone is the wonder of the universe, the warmth, the joy. The only thing that truly remains is the strange pull of humanity, and of course, the spaceship with which they keep travelling. And so the person eventually ends back on earth, reminded of all the ways that humans are an incredibly fragile, helpless species. Disinterested in getting emotionally close to them again, because the memories of war supersede everything, and they know nothing good will come of it. Except...

then a human being unexpectedly changes things. And the person -- despite themself at first -- clings on for dear life, because if this human is experiencing the wonder, the warmth, the joy, then so can they once more, through humanity's eyes. And they become the traveller again - Doctor -- but it's a journey to return to the right of that title. And maybe none of what came before matters, the war, the genocide, even having an own species to begin with, doesn't matter. The Doctor can convince themself that the two of them are going to travel together forever, because all those built up lessons of the past about the dangers of mortality and all those previous companions have dissipated to be replaced by one bright point on which they hinge their entire being

and then the companion is ripped away from them. And the next companion is scarred by witnessing a genocide against humanity (just like the Doctor witnessed, and caused, the genocide of their own people), and the next companion is taken too, and many many people die, and the ones who don't simply leave, as they should, and even discovering another member of their species survived only leads to disaster. The Doctor carries the weight tenfold this time, as the universe reminds them that they're a traveller not by choice, but because they have nowhere to go, and nobody who can stay with them

all the joy of that first companion after the war is ripped away, and every single hurt from every lifetime fills the gaps. for awhile that drives the Doctor mad, but even that passes, replaced by a different sort of will to live, despite it all

for the first time in their lifetimes, the Doctor admits that regeneration feels like dying, like someone else takes their place every time it happens, and that they're afraid of it. In this particular life, they feel unfinished, incomplete, broken. There's more to do, it can't just be all that pain and grief, they keep surviving in this body for a reason, surely, they have to survive because otherwise what was it for and how will they remember...

and then they die

and they become someone else

and the story continues, and they keep on travelling

Davies era recap?

sorry i've been procrastinating on this one so bad. i spent three weeks in costa rica thinking about jurassic park. tbh i don't know what to say about the specials or the era overall that i haven't said already

nine feels so beautiful post-time war, traumatized and snappish but also light and warm and kind. he was once a father and grandfather and now he is neither but he is still a doctor!! s1 feels so much richer after having seen "day of the doctor" tbh i know how we got here! it was hard, agonizing, impossible choices. yet he's still here, and he chooses love every time. a coward. he would rather doom the entire universe as long as it kills him too; he cannot survive another genocide. he can't see it happen again. if he can't prevent it, he just wants to not see it. i love nine so much

and then ten. ten is more built from nine than ANY other regeneration i can think of. ten is rose, he's bad wolf, he's nine. he's the echo of donna, of tentoo. ten is someone struggling to find his place between "where he's already been, as remembered by rose" and "where he is destined to go, via donna" like he is so dragged along by fate. mf is a full on greek tragedy, he does NOT know what is going on

that's what makes the specials such a wreck (good/bad). when he was with rose, they were a painful but understandable match. with martha, kinda middle ground. with donna, it was fate. after them? after tentoo, after the most important woman in all creation? he's adrift. he clings to randos, he tries to be the hero so hard. and he fails. he trips and cries and sobs like a huge loser, over and over again. i do love him (and tennant is fully failed by 2/4 specials) but he's unraveling! little baby duck imprinted on their mommy who is gone. what's left, after that? martyr/savior complex and dubiously gay shit, i guess

tennant is a marvel, i have to say this. eccleston too, in different ways. davies has such a wonderfully human touch with these characters, iirc moffat draws a lot from fairy tales while davies pulled a lot from modern social commentary. jack is... something, but it was a different time. ten/master is sooooooo much. this era ended more than a decade ago

all in all, davies era is beautiful, it's decadent. it's complete nonsense bullshit a good chunk of time, but i don't think that's a negative; doctor who is like star wars to me, where i truly genuinely believe it's at its best when it's kind of bad. i mean, late 60s is MY era of who. base under siege nonsense galore. farting aliens. doctor who should be bad, in order to be good. i mean this, genuinely. attack of the clones is great. you get it

i feel more comfortable leaning into this ending knowing what comes later; knowing that davies comes back, knowing that ten becomes fourteen eventually and cleans up his shit, knowing that donna gets a better, more complete ending. it's honestly hard to say what i would think about this era without knowing about the 60th; i do think "journey's end" is a nonsense bullshit episode that is nonetheless very fun to watch, however cruel an ending it is for donna. very grateful we got a redux. moffat is writing for this new davies era too i'm so excited i want to throw up

anyway! excited to re-enter the moffat era but davies had so much sway over the new tone of the show, so much feels so dated but there's no denying the impact his episodes had at the time. there were cat people. it was thematically consistent. god i love it all so much. quel domage!

regis and angouleme mentorship-friendship-parenthood masterpost

canon interactions

their first interaction is that regis, in an attempt to stop geralt from accusing cahir of treachery, accuses angouleme of lying, who appears and tells him not to accuse her... and her typical nicknaming all adult men “uncle” to annoy them follows. [1]

also from when they first meet, angouleme rides regis’s mule, draakul. it is sort of suggested that she took the ride without permission (as normal equines cannot stand regis’ presence, so why would he give it up?), but on the malheur pass, angouleme rides draakul again. with character development and trust, it may be inferred that upon this second time, she took the ride with permission.

jana komárková (whose work might be counted as canon as the official illustrator of the czech editions) drew regis protecting angouleme when geralt and cahir fight (although her regis design is debatable, heh)

regis does not understand angouleme’s usage of swearing, but takes up using her funny sayings, such as “look at what the cat dragged in,” amongst others. (this can be seen as similar to a father emulating teenage slang he heard from his daughter - to be annoying, or genuinely because he thinks they are nifty)

angouleme approaches geralt and regis as they are speaking together in the palace rose gardens and bothers them with gossip. regis does not rebuke her or show signs of annoyance, and responds to her gossip with seriousness.

angouleme and regis take turns informing geralt about milva’s recent life events concerning her refusal of the baron’s marriage proposal

regis defends angouleme when he did not need to from fringilla when she antagonizes her [2] and probes her for information about geralt. regis interrupts fringilla and begins to argue with her, which presents considerable risk for him as she is a sorceress and demonstrates, even within the conversation, that she knows him to be a vampire. [3]

similarities which bond them

turmultous youth, cruelty, loss and regaining of ‘humanity' [4]

addictions which dull their pain and numb them to the loss of their friends [5]

what can they learn?

angouleme could learn peace, humanity, acceptance. this would be a step in the right direction for her to re-learn how to treat herself and others with kindness (though i think “learning respect” would be a little much, and something she doesn’t need). regis is a healer, so being alongside him would allow her to heal from pain and focus on regeneration, life, instead of the violent and dark past... she also could learn about not defining herself as what others might see her as, instead determining her identity for herself [10]

regis could learn the capstone of humanity, fulfilling his character arc - as humanity is defined by mortality, parent and child dynamics. vampires do not have anything like parental guidance, so this is a uniquely human concept. it seems to me that in a company set out to rescue a daughter, it would be grand if he should come to personally understand what the concept of a daughter is

general thematic contrasts

the sage and the student, the wise and the ignorant (but as it turns out, the teacher becomes the student...)

the past and the future (meet together in the present)

the dark and the light (regis is dark-haired, angouleme is light-haired, they also have night and day motifs)

why regis and angouleme, specifically?

considering regis’s dark past and struggles with addiction and violence, i think he would understand angouleme well. the stupidity of youth... but also the value of it, why it can’t be discarded or shamed...

additionally, regis is a vampire and not beholden to human worrying and fussing over a child, which angouleme would find to be suffocating (for example, geralt or milva would forbid her from participating in dangerous activities, but regis may just shrug and think it would be a good lesson for her. of course, this means that he must learn the human way to parent, which is to keep your child out of danger). this would make regis a good confidant for angouleme, who may not want to tell geralt or milva about dangerous activities for fear they would ground her or worry 

angouleme is exceedingly straightforward and regis is extremely philosophical which results in comedic exchanges

“child befriends strange otherworldly being” is always a great dynamic.

[1] one of the prominent themes of interactions in the witcher is when a parent meets a child which they will later adopt, but they meet on the wrong foot and dislike each other in the beginning. you can see this with geralt and ciri as well as yennefer and ciri.

[2] i characterize fringilla’s behavior in this scene towards angouleme as antagonizing her because suggesting that she unwillingly became pregnant isn’t a simple joke when one considers that fringilla is much older than angouleme and also angouleme is a csa survivor. to clarify, i don’t think fringilla is a bad person for this, but she went “too far” in the joke, as this may demonstrate that she is not close enough to angouleme to understand when she is comfortable and when she is not

[3] speaking of his nightly activities, as well as calling him only by his last names, which he tells no one, suggesting that she read his whole name from his mind. regis also mentions earlier that in order to stay safe in toussaint, he must ‘stay away from sorcerers,’ and he is clearly doing the opposite here.

[4] regis was not born with humanity, he had to learn it painstakingly after centuries of his only thoughts being of blood and parties. angouleme had humanity but lost it as she became a bandit and has been living ferally, her only thoughts of survival and a next meal. 

[5] regis lost all of his friends slowly when he became so unpleasant to be around and focused on his addiction. angouleme lost all of her friends slowly as they were killed off by the law or unspoken events

[6] regis states in baptism of fire that it did not matter who they drank from, as long as there was hemoglobin. angouleme states in lady of the lake that you can get drunk on cheap wines just as well as you can from expensive ones, and you puke the same as well...

[7] angouleme speaks about how mining operations work in the north case mines, much to geralt’s annoyance. regis speaks about logging operations in angren, much to everyone’s annoyance. regis speaks on about his backstory in baptism of fire (his past). angouleme speaks on about her plans for a brothel in lady of the lake (her future).

[8] regis was punctured by stakes when he was killed. both fulko artevelde and nightingale threatened to have angouleme gutted on a stake

[9] regis annoys geralt in baptism of fire multiple times, especially when he comes back for the fish soup scene. angouleme helps geralt when she makes her character debut and informs him about schirru’s plot.

[10] as it relates to regis saying that many would see him as a monster, a blood-drinking fiend... angouleme expects geralt and cahir to admonish her for her use of fisstech, and is aware that others see her as a no-good criminal. she could learn that all there is to identity is self-determination. also i definitely mean this manner of ‘determining your own identity’ in a transgender way thanks for reading

1. Ear (Right, torn)

Nadia drops the ear in front of Peter at the mess hall, which is less than ideal for a variety of reasons. A bit because it makes Peter want to eat his mystery soup a little less, but mostly because it causes Reggie from the kitchen to glare over at them. 

"What did I say about dismembered limbs in my mess hall?"

"Not allowed unless they're going in your food," Peter dutifully recites. "Though, can I just say, that's majorly creepy. Am I supposed to take that as 'If Abel had a food shortage, you'd become our very own renewable meat source'? Because that's how I've taken it."

Reggie doesn't respond except to narrow their eyes further, which isn't exactly inspiring. 

Peter turns back to Nadia. "Good afternoon, Nadia! To what do I owe the honor?"

"Someone gave this to Veronica but she said that it wasn't a 'good enough sample,'" Nadia says, with the look of an indulgent older sibling who's been given a mudpie. "I figured you might want it back."

Peter is never sure where he stands with Nadia; she didn't know him, before, and hasn't really shown any interest in getting to know him now, beyond awkward small talk when he goes to Veronica's labs. Still, as her hand's twitch against the wheels of her chair, he recognizes her bravado, as well as the devotion to someone who's just a bit crazy. He smiles at her, puts his spoon down, and picks up the ear. He doesn't want it, not really, but it was nice of her to bring it.

2. Finger (Left pinky, cut just above the palm)

Peter supposes that it’s his fault, walking up to another runner without loudly announcing his presence beforehand. Still, it's not like he knew Jody was sharpening her knife. 

"Peter, oh my god, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to!" Jody gasps, dropping out of her defensive stance as easily as she'd moved into it. Between them on the soft grass of the quad, Peter's finger lays forlornly.

"Since when do you use knives anyway?" Peter hisses, voice muffled by how he's shoved his hand into his mouth in a reflexive attempt to stop the pain. He knows that his body is working to fix it, that in a few hours he'll have a full hand again, but still.

"Tom gave it to me," Jody replies, more starry-eyed than the statement would've called for half a decade ago. Really, Peter should've expected the answer; De Lucas like it best when everyone is nice and well-armed.

"Why are you sharpening it, then? I'd say it's sharp enough already, obviously." Peter wiggles his pinky-less hand pointedly, though there's a significant part of him that's thankful that he only caught her after the knife was sharp enough to make a clean cut: a half-dull blade would've hurt more. Jody scowls, though her eyes still have an apologetic sheen to them. 

"Well, what are you doing skulking around like that? You nearly gave me a heart attack!"

"I was going to ask if you wanted to join me on a book exchange run because I heard a rumor that Fort Canton had the fifth Percy Jackson book," Peter huffs, "But now I think I should just go alone."

"Oh, don't be like that," Jody says. She picks up Peter's still bleeding finger from the ground and tosses it to him as she bends to tie her sneakers tighter. 

"What am I supposed to do with this?" Peter asks, making a face. The wound on his hand has closed up, overactive cells already starting to grow him a new pinky, but he puts the old one up to the spot for a moment anyway, pulling it away like a macabre mimicry of a fake finger magic trick.

"I dunno, that's none of my business, is it?" Jody snarks, "Now, let's go, before someone else gets that novel."

3. Kidney (Look, it’s been a hard week)

"Damn it, Peter," Louise Bailey hisses, and something hits Peter's back, fast enough that he knows she threw it, "I slipped on your intestines!"

"Sorry! Next time someone's slicing through me with a machete, I'll be sure to keep all my organs inside so I don't hurt you," Peter snarks back as she catches up with him. She didn't actually slip on his intestines, Peter knows, because his intestines are definitely still inside of his body, despite the large torso-spanning slash that he's weakly pressing his hands against -- it used to be hard for him to tell what he'd lost or what hurts, but he's become something of an expert at it since he's rejoined Abel. He's still not sure if that's a good thing. Still, Louise probably did trip on something of his, since whatever she threw at his back was too fleshy and soft to be anything but organic, and he's certain that a few of his less than vital organs spilled out. "You know, this is why I hate missions where I have to deal with people."

"Because you lose your organs?" Louise asks, voice dripping with sarcasm. 

"Yes, because I lose my organs! Zombies bite and scratch, but they don't throw knives or slice me up. I may be immortal but I can still feel pain," Peter says. Louise is quiet for a moment before she turns around. Peter slows down, nervously looking back towards her and, unfortunately, the direction that their pursuers are coming from. "Oi! What are you doing?"

Louise bends to pick something up and doubles back, cradling a fist-sized, burgundy thing in her hands. She tosses it and Peter catches it on reflex. "Here, it's yours anyway."

The kidney is a bit misshapen and smushed, probably from where Louise stepped on it, but it's still warm in his hands. Louise looks at him out the side of her eye like she's expecting him to just pull open his cut and pop it back in. He slides it into his backpack instead, already anticipating a lecture from Maxine about getting bio-goo on Township supplies. "Thanks, appreciate it."

4. Three toes, as well as one and a half loose phalanges (Big and index of right, big of left, god knows where those phalanges came from)

Paula frowns at Peter's feet. Peter frowns at the roof of the building that he still calls the Med Tent in his head. 

"Well, doctor?" He asks, "What's the verdict?" 

Paula moves her scrutiny to Peter's face. "I don't know how you managed to crush your feet like this-"

"I was carrying a supply crate and I tripped, alright, it's not like I did it on purpose," Peter defends. Paula continues as though he hadn't spoken.

"But, usually, I'd do an X-ray and maybe some surgery to re-set, then wrap the toes up for a few weeks. For you, I can tell that at least two of these have set wrong already, so I'll have to re-break them. Though I guess, I could always just amputate."

Peter considers this. "Which one will be faster?"

"The amputation, but you'd be off-balance while things grew back."

"I'd be off-balance with the wrap too," Peter waves her concern off like he's swatting a bug, "No, no, better the quick solution. Can I get anesthetic?"

"Can you get- Of course you can Peter, what kind of doctor do you think I am?" Paula shakes her head at him. "Sometimes, I wonder what's going on in that head of yours."

Peter grins at her, unrepentant and a little self-deprecating. "You and me both, Doc."

Later, after Peter's enjoyed some of the best pain-numbing that Abel can spare and has been given a blindfold because "If you don't stop looking down here and flinching, I'm going to have to cut even more and neither of us wants that," Paula hands Peter a biohazard bag. 

Peter shakes it experimentally and scrunches his nose at the sound of flesh bouncing around inside. "Are these my toes?"

"Yes. Bring them over to Veronica for me, would you? She's been trying to convince Maxine that it would be ethical to cut off one of your limbs for nearly a month now, anyway, might as well give her some actually ethically-sourced Peter parts."

"What am I, a mailman?" Peter asks, peeking into the bag and wincing with phantom pain. Paula frowns at him.

"Do you need a blindfold to wear on the way over to Veronica's as well?"

"Why, Doctor Cohen, I didn't think you were into that sort of thing," Peter leers, breaking into laughter when Paula throws a roll of bandages at him. "Alright, alright, I'm going!"

"And be careful of that foot!"

5. A rather large bone (???)

"That is not mine." 

Tom stares at Peter, unblinking. Peter likes Tom, he did even when Tom was more liability than friend, but god if he isn't creepy sometimes. 

"Are you sure?" Tom asks, looking from the bone, a massive thing that's clearly longer than Peter's forearm, to Peter. 

"I'm quite sure. I don't know who's out there missing a bone, but I like to think that I would've noticed losing a leg bone."

Tom hums, consideringly. He picks up the bone and swings it once, as though he's testing the heft and balance. Peter suddenly has a horrible vision of Tom, just as dangerous and De Luca-ish as he is right now, but also armed with a bone sword. He doesn't think that Janine would ever forgive him if he let that happen. 

"Actually, you know what?" Peter says, reaching forward and taking the bone from Tom, "I think this might be mine. Thank you for returning it, I'll just, uh, add it to the collection, as it were."

"You collect your own bones?" Tom asks. Peter, who is already too far in, just smiles back at him. 

"We all have our little hobbies," He offers. Tom raises his eyebrows but nods. Still, Peter makes a mental note to tell Jody to be on the lookout for any weird new quirks; Tom had seemed much too interested in the concept of a bone collection.

+ 1. Nothing

Five clears their throat as they enter Peter's curtained-off corner of the Med Tent. "Rare that you're trapped in here," They sign. 

"Unfortunately, even I need some time and doctor assistance to fix spinal trauma," Peter says, putting down the knitting that Jody gave him; he appreciates the gesture but knitting when one of your hands is pins-and-needles numb and you can only use the other if you hold your arm in a very particular position while your nerves knit themselves back together is more effort than it's worth. "Nice of you to come visit, though." 

Five makes a face, their classic I'm not sorry but manners tell me that I should be face, and signs, "Sam told me that I should come visit you. He says I shouldn't keep your things without asking."

"My things?" Peter asks, brow furrowed. "What do you have of mine? I didn't you'd be much for theft, Five. Well, theft among friends, that is."

"I'm not, it's just-" They cut themselves off and reach into their pocket with a heavy sigh. What they pull out is small, white, and clean. Peter's confused for a moment, wondering why in the world Sam thinks it's his, and then Five moves it in their hand and he gets a better idea of the shape and- huh. 

"That's one of my vertebrae." He says, though it sounds more accusing than he'd wanted. Five scowls. 

"I found it, fair and square. You just left it on the ground, obviously you didn't care about it."

"Five, my dearest, darling head of runners," Peter starts, desperately wishing that his hands were working enough that he could steeple them for emphasis. "I passed out from blood loss."

"That's not any of my business!" Five signs emphatically. 

Sometimes, Peter forgets that Five is like this; sometimes, in his head, Five is a big soft puppy that loves sports bras and Sam. The real Five, unfortunately, is a gremlin who does things like drink shampoo to win a bet and picks up garbage off the ground during runs just because they can. "Whatever, it's fine. I don't want it anyway."

Five looks at him suspiciously but puts the bone away. "Are you sure?"

"Very. I've already regrown most of the damaged pathways, I'm sure the bones are nearly back as well." 

"I wasn't really worried about you taking this one back," They say, finally coming closer to settle into the chair next to Peter's bed. "But it would've been okay if you did; I have three more."

"Three more?" Peter asks, "Are they all vertebrae or- Actually, nevermind, I don't want to know and I don't want them back."

"Good," Five grins, sharp as a wolf, "I wouldn't have given them to you anyway."

Deconstruction

Worldbuilding: Semblances II

Last time in Part I, we analyzed the failings of Semblances from a meta perspective. Now we’re going to look at them within the context of the actual show. Before we begin, let’s revisit that list of basic traits that are universally shared by Semblances.

A Semblance draws upon Aura as its source of power. When this fuel is depleted, a person can no longer use their Semblance, and must wait for their Aura to regenerate before it can be used again.

The specific ability or nature of one’s Semblance is alleged to be an expression of the user’s personality/character/soul.

Overuse of a Semblance can adversely affect a person and cause physical side effects, such as fatigue, headaches, or fainting.

Semblances can interact with Dust in such a way that their skills are augmented, resulting in the temporary acquisition of new subskills or secondary characteristics.

Through training and regular usage, Semblances can gradually become stronger or more advanced.

The intensity of certain emotions, such as stress, panic, despair, or rage, can cause a person to subconsciously activate their Semblance.

This refresher will be important as we go more in-depth. At the very least, it’ll save you the hassle of having to jump back and forth between tabs.

Limitations of Semblances

Recall point one. If your first instinct is to say, surely having a limited amount of Aura is a good limitation for Semblances, then you’d be forgiven for thinking that. In theory, it makes sense: a power based on a finite energy source does seem like a pretty significant drawback. My main issue with this being a credible limitation for Semblances is that we, the audience, have no way to gauge Aura depletion over time. And by extension, neither do our characters. In the first three Volumes, students used specialized monitors (usually on their scrolls) to keep tabs on Aura over the course of a sparring match. Not only do I like this because it’s a clever visual aid for relaying information to the audience, but also because it conveys clear worldbuilding information: characters don’t seem to have a way of innately sensing when their Aura is low. This idea seems to be reinforced again in V7.E3 - “Ace Operatives.” In the opening scene, Clover reminds RWBY and JN_R that their scrolls have been upgraded with Atlas tech, and they shouldn’t forget to use them. That line of dialogue is accompanied by Blake consulting her scroll for her teammates’ Aura levels. To my knowledge, there’s nothing in the canon that suggests characters can sense or feel when their Aura level drops, or how far away it is from depletion.

Having to rely on scrolls to monitor their Aura would be an excellent limitation to impose on an otherwise limitless superpower. Not only would it require the characters to constantly monitor their Aura, but it could introduce realistic problems. Like what would happen if a character’s scroll was lost, or destroyed, or its batteries died? How would that affect the character’s behavior in regards to Aura-related tasks? Great idea, right?

Now here comes the kicker: we don’t see any evidence of this in the show. When Team RNJR was traveling through Anima, none of them discussed having to find a village to recharge their scrolls. It’s not as if the trees have outlets that they can conveniently plug their scrolls into. Similarly, none of the characters from Volume 3 onward consult their scroll during fights to see where their Aura levels are at. You don’t see characters changing fighting styles midway through a fight in order to conserve what little Aura they have left. You don’t see characters minimizing the use of their Semblance in favor of more efficient tactics.

That’s why limited Aura doesn’t seem like a believable limitation for Semblances—not for a lack of possibility, but for a lack of execution. If characters made more of a fuss about it on-screen, I could buy it. But apart from one or two throw-away lines, characters don’t seem to pay attention to how Aura depletion affects Semblance usage, and by extension, they don’t adjust or change their tactics during combat to compensate for it.

Bear in mind that this discussion has only touched upon general limitations. We haven’t even addressed Semblance-specific limitations yet. Can Marcus Black only steal one Semblance at a time? Can Sun only make a certain number of clones at once? If Yang doesn’t eventually release the energy that she’s stored up, does it backfire on her? Is Pyrrha limited to only one type of magnetism, like ferromagnetism, or can she use more than one type? If Robyn uses her Semblance on someone who’s stating an incorrect fact, but they believe that fact to be true, then does it indicate that the person is lying? Does Hazel’s Semblance allow him to bypass/negate his Aura’s healing factor in order to stab Dust into his body?

And on and on it goes. A combination of vague or poorly-established mechanics for Semblances, coupled with the wide variety of Semblances, makes it impossible to predict what could be a hindrance for our characters down the road. This in turn creates a lack of stakes—how can we, the audience, be invested in the dangers that the cast faces, when we don’t know if those dangers are credible in the first place?

Active versus Passive Semblances

Usually when a character reveals information, it’s meant to answer questions, not create more of them. Such was the case when Qrow revealed his Semblance to Team RNJR for the first time—he brings misfortune, or rather, causes people (and objects in the nearby vicinity) to be blighted by bad luck via the manipulation of probability. Qrow is our introduction to passive Semblances, a term which, if I’m being honest, I’m not even entirely sure is canon. Someone’ll need to correct me on that, but for now “passive Semblance” will do. Because we have precious little information on the topic, I’m going to be relying on direct quotes.

Qrow: My Semblance isn't like most—it's not exactly something I do. It's always there, whether I like it or not. I bring misfortune. [1]

This passage tells us two different things: (1) passive Semblances are always active, and (2) passive Semblances can’t be controlled.

You can already see the problems with introducing a new concept this late in the game, because this new information clashes with what (few) previously-established rules we already have: Do passive Semblances require Aura? If Qrow’s Aura is depleted, will his Semblance continue to run, or will it become unusable like everyone else’s?

This ambiguity becomes even more frustrating when we acquire more information a little over a year later:

“It's not necessarily constantly running, it's more that it randomly spikes to cause unfortunate situations. If he chooses to amplify it in a fight, then yes, it does cost him.” [2]

Now we’re being told that that his Semblance isn’t “always there,” that Qrow can control it to an extent, and that his Semblance only depletes his Aura when he chooses to amplify it. Here we have an example of the character in the show being directly contradicted by one of the show’s creators. This implies that either they didn’t do a good enough job explaining passive Semblances the first time around, or they changed things after the episode aired. It isn’t just a he said/she said issue, either—Semblances requiring Aura is one of RWBY’s core mechanics for its pseudo-magic system, and by having a character whose Semblance breaks that cardinal rule, it makes the writing more difficult to believe or trust in terms of what’s canon versus what’s a retcon; what’s a subplot versus what’s a plothole. It doesn’t help when we get even more contradictory information from later episodes:

Qrow: I wouldn’t thank me. My Semblance brings misfortune. Sometimes I can’t keep it under control. [3]

I’m sorry, I thought we just established that Qrow can only amplify his Semblance. Now you’re telling us that he can partially suppress it too? Either he can’t control it at all, he can amplify it, or he can sometimes suppress its effects. Make up your damn mind.

The effects of his Semblance can be as minor as a coffee spill or as dire as a collapsing building… [4]

No! Stop it! Knocking over a Starbucks latte is not the same thing as demolishing a fucking building.

How is Qrow’s Semblance able to do something as insanely energy-demanding as toppling infrastructure without expending any Aura? How does his Semblance locate or prioritize variables in the environment to exploit/sabotage? Like, if there’s a mouse hanging out near some sort of Dust-powered generator in the building, does his Semblance send out subliminal messaging that convinces the mouse to chew through an electrical wire and cause the generator to explode?

Look, I refuse to believe that spilling a cup of coffee is somehow equal to setting off a stick of TNT or taking a wrecking ball to the side of a skyscraper. It doesn’t make any sense, which means that you have to provide a proper explanation for how it works. Because otherwise you’re going to be left with an audience that assumes Qrow’s Semblance is powered by (a) plot convenience, or (b) rats.

This—all of this, right here—is my issue with passive Semblances. (And don’t even get me started on Clover’s.)

Semblance Discovery, Auratic Plasticity

Did you notice the fancy scientific-sounding term in the heading?

Ooh. Auratic plasticity. That sounds official. You’re probably wondering where that term came from. A scene from Volume 5 you haven’t re-watched in a while (not that I can blame you). A World of Remnant episode, perhaps? Maybe it’s from one of the comics, or the director’s commentary on a DVD, or even an AMA on Reddit?

To answer your question: it didn’t come from any of those. Auratic plasticity is a term I coined exclusively for the Redux. Specifically, for talking about what goes behind discovering a person’s Semblance, and what factors are at play when that Semblance takes on its unique form.

Before we can talk about Auratic plasticity, however, we need to talk about all the ways someone discovers their Semblance. It can vary wildly from person to person. For some, their Semblance unlocks randomly while doing everyday run-of-the-mill things. As alluded to by Taiyang in V4.E9 - “Two Steps Forward, Two Steps Back,” Yang’s Semblance activated while she was getting a haircut. For others, it can be the byproduct of training, extreme stress, or an otherwise fatal encounter. [5] In rare instances, Semblances can be hereditary, thus removing any ambiguity of what that person’s Semblance will be when it first activates.

The reason why I bring any of this up is because RWBY’s official stance is that Semblances “generally reflect the wielder’s personality.” [6] If Semblances were generally tied to the personality of the wielder, then it would fail to account for the correlation between the circumstance that triggered the Semblance to manifest, and the resulting Semblance expression.

Let me give you a few examples.

Adaptive Semblance: Nora’s Semblance was unlocked when she was struck by lightning. Consider the fact that her Semblance allows her to absorb electricity without taking any damage from the electric current. Rather than her Semblance being tied to her personality, Nora’s is likely a case of an adaptive Semblance—as in, her circumstances required a very specific Semblance in order to survive the 10,000 amperes running through her body. Instead of her soul generating a Semblance tied to her personality, it prioritized generating a Semblance that would help her survive an immediate and life-threatening scenario.

Innate Semblance: Ruby’s Semblance was discovered one day while training. If we’re to assume that there weren’t any dangerous circumstances factoring into that training session, it’s likely that her soul generated a Semblance that was in fact tied to an aspect of her personality. In this case, her superspeed is a projection of her enthusiasm and hyperactive zeal, and her tendency to prioritize others’ wellbeing over her own, trying to figuratively (and in this case, literally) reach them before they’re harmed.

Hereditary Semblance: Weiss and Winter, and (presumably) Whitley, Willow, and Nicholas all share the glyph-based Semblance unique to the Schnee lineage. The confirmation of their Semblance being explicitly hereditary contradicts the idea that Semblances are an expression of one’s personality. If we go by that logic, it implies that—what, their personalities are all the same? They have no individuality? I’m sorry, but that’s just dumb.

This is why Semblance discovery is important, and why the canon should have paid more attention to developing it. There’s pretty compelling evidence for a person’s Semblance being tied to multiple factors apart from their “personality.” I know that I’m digressing here a bit, but the main reason why I bring up this correlation isn’t just because it clarifies inconsistencies with the canon. It also presents an opportunity to enrich the lore of the show.

In the Redux, Auratic plasticity is the ability of the soul to generate a Semblance based on either an immutable personality trait (innate), a scenario-specific survival method (adaptive), or a “genetic” trait that’s repeatedly selected for due to its inherent fitness (inherited). These three categories are determined by a value called hierarchical prioritization—basically, it’s the soul’s ability to decide what Semblance-trigger gets precedence. I’ll get into more detail when I start the Amendment, but it felt important to clarify my intentions early, so I could justify writing 700 words on why Semblance discovery is important.

Adverse Effects of Using Semblances

Unlike Limitations, which focuses on what a Semblance can or can’t do, Adverse Effects deals with the negative repercussions/consequences of using a Semblance.

Or in RWBY’s case, a lack thereof.

(For the moment, let’s set aside the magic/not magic discourse and acknowledge that yes, in the traditional sense, Aura, Semblances, and Dust are part of RWBY’s magic system, the same way bending is part of A:TLA’s.)

When designing a magic system, you’ve got to balance it. Otherwise, the system contains powers that are vaguely-defined, OP, and bereft of any costs.

One way to implement a system of checks and balances is by giving that system a cost for using it. In RWBY’s case, the only “cost” experienced by characters is physical fatigue whenever they overextend themselves. But in the grand scheme of things it’s not really a detrimental consequence, in part because of how infrequently exhaustion is viewed as a legitimate threat. Seriously. When was the last time you saw the main cast fail because they overdid it while using their Semblances? It just doesn’t happen.

One way you could implement a cost is by tying Semblance usage to a physical demand. According an article by Julia Belluz, Winter Olympic athletes consume anywhere between 1,300 - 2,500 and 4,000 - 7,000 calories on average per day.

It wouldn’t be that much of a stretch to apply this to RWBY. Given the high-intensity acrobatics the characters perform on the regular, it would make sense that strenuous physical activity, coupled with Semblance usage, would create costs in the form of caloric needs. Maybe that’s an issue Team RNJR needs to deal with while backpacking across Anima. Is food a top priority for them? Do they have to restrict Semblance usage when running low on rations? Does the group ever have to hunt or forage for food to meet the energy demands of fighting Grimm?

Not only does this balance out Semblances, but it opens the door for potential worldbuilding. Is “Huntsman” ever used as a euphemism for “glutton”? Do all-you-can-eat buffets ban Huntsmen from their establishments? Do Huntsmen have a reputation for being less picky about food options? In places that use trade-and-barter systems, are Huntsmen willing to accept food as payment instead of lien?

I think that’s more or less everything I wanted to say about Semblances. I have a few unrelated nitpicks, but I can save those for another time. This post is already longer than I intended it to be.

We Need To Go

Characters: Inko Midoriya, Izuku Midoriya, Iida, Todoroki, Mr.Aizawa/Eraserhead, Katsuki Bakugo

Warnings: small use of swearing from Bakugo, spoilers from manga up to chapter 230ish

A/N: Hey there this is my first time ever writing a fan fic, I’ve had this idea in my head for some time now hope you enjoy!

Inko ran up to the gates of UA and pressed the door phone button to get into touch with someone to let her inside. The sound of air came out from the speaker when a voice says “Hello please state your name and reason for coming to UA” the robotic voice said from the other end of the line.

“My name is Inko Midoriya, and I’m here to see my son it’s an emergency!” she exclaimed trying not to be too loud because the sun had already set and she didn’t want to disturb anyone. After a few seconds of waiting the robotic voice came back.

“I’ll send over class 1-A’s homeroom teacher to speak with you” the voice states and Inko waited before she saw the shadow of her son’s teacher Eraserhead coming out from the dorm building.

“Hello, Mrs.Midoriya” stated Mr.Aizawa before he could ask Inko about why she is here Inko runs off towards class 1-A’s dorms “Wait!” Mr.Aizawa shouts “You can’t just go in there!”

“He’s coming, and I need to get my Izuko out of here!” Inko shouts back at Mr.Aizawa as he manages to stop her from going into the dorms.

“What are you talking about?” Mr.Aizawa questions

Inko manages to get out of his grasp and run up into the dorms, rushing into class 1-A’s common area where they’re eating their supper.

“Izuku!” Inko shouts “He’s here, he’s coming!” sounding very worried

Looking confused and worried Midoriya got up from where he was eating with his friends and rushed to his mother “What do you mean?” he asks “Who’s here, whos coming?”

Inko took a few seconds to slow her breathing down because she had just ran all the way up here “Your father” she states holding back the tears knowing if she didn’t get her son away something might happen to him

“What do you mean?” Midoriya says wanting to know why it was so bad that his dad was back from his work in America “Is it not good that dad is finally back, and that I can finally meet him because he left for a job in America when I was just 4 weeks old?” Midoriya questioned

“NO” Inko almost yells before she noticed that the rest of Izuku’s classmates were just on the other side of the room watching them in shock “ No it’s not good!” 

As Inko was about to tell Izuku about why it was so bad that his father had was coming when she thought whether if Izuku’s classmates should hear this or not

“Uh...umm” she started looking over at Mr.Aizawa, “I think that the rest of the class especially Katsuki should hear this”

Mr.Aizawa nods his head and asked if everyone could go over to the couches and to hear what Inko has to say

As everyone starts to head over to the couch Kirishima whispers to Bakugo “Hey man…” he starts “do you know whats going on with Midoriya’s mom?” he questioned

“How the hell should I know!” Bakugo grunts “I don’t care about shity Deku or his personal life”

Kirishima sighs at his friend’s response and takes a seat on the couch

As everyone takes a seat on the couch Inko was given a stool and a glass of water by her son ‘I probably look like I’m about to faint’ she thought to herself getting more nervous then what she needs to because she’s just talking to a group of 20 16-year-olds because it was probably for the best if everyone knew

Taking in a deep breath in as everyone had finally settled down Inko starts “ Oh..okay now I know you kids are probably confused about why I all asked you here” Inko says her hands trembling while holding the glass of water “but it’s better that you find out now rather than later that I’m taking my son away” as she stops and let the news set into everyone including Izuku, checking the time on her phone to see how much time she had until her husband would be getting off the plane and heading to Izuku’s location when she hears everyone in the room yell “WHAAT!!”

“What why?” Midoriya asked holding his tears back

“Well…” Inko saying slowly “If you kids haven’t heard yet from what Izuku and I were talking about earlier was that Izuku’s father is coming home”

“Well that sounds great” Iida states but questioned right after asking “but then why are you taking Midoriya away?” the class backing up their class rep with nods

“It’s because of his first quirk” Inko says looking up at everyone knowing how confusing this had become

“What do you mean by his first quirk?’ Todoroki questioned remembering that he had asked Midoiya just over a month ago about him having more than one quirk when at the jointed training class they had with 1-B he used a new quirk. But Midoriya was completely clueless on what happened and said that it must have manifested from his quirk

“Well you all know that Izuku has a quirk that allows him to increase his strength and speed” Inko recalls thinking back to what her son told her since she still hasn’t seen him in action “Well that wasn’t the quirk he was born with”

Everyone in the room shocked turned to look over at him surprised to see that he also has the same shocked look on his as everyone else “I…was...never...quirkless?” Midoriya said slowly “Even the doctor you took me to see when I was 4 even said I was quirkless, I didn’t even have the extra joint in my toe like he mentioned how everyone who had a quirk had that extra joint!” Izuku exclaimed

“It was your fathers doing” Inko states as she continued to state her reasoning “After you were about three weeks old I passed out due to exhaustion falling down the stairs at our old place and snaping the bone in my forearm that you could see the bone coming out,” Inko says rubbing a small scar on her left arm “Your father was holding you when it all happened, he had rushed towards me as I fell to the ground. He had tried to use his quirk but it couldn’t do much than putting the bone back into place and heal the broken bone”

“That doesn’t make sense,” Midoriya said, “You told me that dad’s quirk was fire breath” 

“That was a lie,” Inko says trying to not cry as she starts talking more about the past she had kept hidden to her son “Your father’s quirk isn’t fire breath...it’s regeneration” thinking back about what happened back in the past Inko carried on, “I told you that because he asked to keep the important things about him a secret”

Being as confused as ever Midoriya told her mother to go on

“Your father didn’t want us getting hurt because of him and his job so he told me before he left to tell you lies about the more important things,” Inko says just above a whisper so that everyone could hear

“What is his job if it could end up hurting us?” Midoriya questioned, “Was he a bad man?” Midoriya hoped that what he just asked his mom was far from true

“Heavens no!” Inko exclaimed half jumping out of the chair she sat on “In America, your father is their #2 hero!”

Everyone shocked that there was another student in the class who had a famous family member in the hero business, Midoriya jumps up almost yelling out “WHAAT!” 

“I’ll explain everything Izuku” Inko explains “But it’s easier to tell you this from the beginning”

“Continuing where I left off I had fallen down the stairs and broke a bone in my forearm,” Inko says recapping what she just told everyone “My husband’s quirk ‘regeneration’ was only able to heal the broken bone. As your father was reassuring me that everything was alright and that he was going to take me to the hospital to get stitched up, Izuku reached out from his grasp and held firmly onto my wounded arm” Inko paused and took a sip of her water noticing how dry it was and continued on the story “That was when we both realized that Izuku’s quirk manifested when the large wound on my arm had slowly started to heal and in no time flat the gouge on my arm had heald and had only left this small scar” Inko said pointing to the scar on her left forearm

Out of nowhere, Bakugo stood up and yelled: “Oi Deku you told me that you weren’t hiding a quirk!”

Midoiya held up his arms in defence “N-No Kacchan!” Midoriya says shakily “I never knew about this, I don’t remember any of this!”

“Katsuki” Inko says sternly “Izuku is right he doesn’t know anything”

Bakugo grunts and sits back down allowing Inko to continue on her story

“As I was saying,” Inko says clearing her throat “After Izuku healed my arm and me and Izuku’s father were no longer in shock from what just happened we drove off to the hospital.” adjusting her seat Inko continued on “After we got to the hospital we split up, Izuku and his father went to see a doctor to talk about your quirk and I went with another to see if there was anything missed when my arm was heald” Checking the time again to see that his plane had taken off 2 hours ago now and there were only 11 hours to go “What your father told me what happened was when they were testing out the power of your quirks limits as a 3-week old baby, to their surprise your power was so strong that you were able to re-generate a full broken wing to a butterfly”

Midoriya looked confused because he was pretty sure that was impossible to re-generate something that wasn’t there

“Your father knew at that moment that your quirk was too powerful and needed to be hidden,” Inko says watching her sons face change expressions every time something that he didn’t know about himself and his father was revealed

“So you’re saying that dad intentionally wanted me to be quirkless?” Midoriya asked

“Well…” Inko started “I don’t know”

“When I asked your father why he wanted your quirk to be hidden he had told me it was because of a villain he faced off a year prior to you being born,” Inko said “He had fought against someone who could steal other peoples quirks”

“Wait so you’re saying that dad went up against All For One?” Midoriya asked sounding worried

“Yes,” Inko said “He had gotten away after taking the quirk of his partner, your father had gotten out with only broken bones” Inko stopped wondering if she should go on then looking up to see everyone looking at her with anticipation

“Right,” Inko says clearing her throat, “Your father told me that if All For One found out who you are and what your quirk was there would be no stopping him from taking your power because he knew that All For One was after a quirk like that, the only reason your father got away without getting his quirk taken away because he didn’t use it”

The class started talking asking questions to the people sitting next to them. This happend for a few minutes before Mr.Aizawa told the class to be quiet by raising his voice and activating his quirk making the students quiet right away

After the commotion went down Inko continued “So a couple of days before your father left to go work in America your father had reached out to one of his friends from high school who was currently working on I Island who was working on a chip that can be used to disable quirks for people who couldn’t control their quirks or were being continuously injured by them” Inko says before finishing off the glass of water “Your father asked his friend about having one put onto you, but at that time your father’s friend only had the prototype because he was told that if something like what he made were to get into the wrong hands it would be really bad”

“I see, then how is it that my quirk was disabled,” Midoriya asked

“Well…” Inko continued “Your father had explained the issue to his friend who then agreed to place the chip in you.” Inko thought against what she was going to say next “Izuku...do you still have that scar on your left wrist and remember how you were bullied a lot and were asked multiple times by teachers if you were inducing self-harm on yourself?”

Everyone stares at him in worry and sadness when they heard their friend was bullied a lot. Midoriya looks down at his left wrist “yes” answering the question “I was always asked that question by new teachers when they noticed my wrist, but I a told them that I didn’t really know where I got it from because I’ve had it for as long as I could remember”

“That is where the chip was placed” Inko stated “I was told that once the chip otherwise turns off, gets broken, or stops working the tracker attached to the chip will turn on and both me and your father would be notified and show your location,” Inko says grabbing her phone and showing them what she means by pointing at a red dot on the screen

“I first found when your father called me about it and that he will be coming back home to get you and take you to America with him so you can be as far away from All For One as possible” Inko says “The day before he left for America he had told me that he was going to leave and he said he wanted to take us both but was worried that we might get hurt and wanted us to be safe as he went further on his hero work”

Midoriya stunned at what his mom just told him and his classmates as he stood up and walked up to his mother and hugged her

“Izuku,” Inko said speaking barely over a whisper “I can’t let him take you away”

“I realize there is something I have known for some time but have never said, and, since I have just spent another 4 hours of my life in climate change academia I have to get this out of my system.

Please understand that many you reading this won't live to an old age... and likely will start scrolling after one or 2 more paragraphs... (edit...Ok I was wrong on this point. This is now my 2nd most shared post of all time..(edit)...make that my most shared)

The IPCC report and Paris accord are incredibly overly optimistic and that commits the world to a target that means the death of hundreds of millions if not more.

But it is worse than that.

Even the commitments made by countries in the Paris accord don't get us to a 2 degree world.

But it is worse than that.

The 2 degree target is now unattainable (unless the entire civilization of the world doesn't do a 180 today...) and is based on geo-engineering the climate of the earth as well as the sequestering of every molecule of carbon we produced over the last number of years and every molecule we are producing today and every molecule we produce tomorrow.... these technologies that don't exist wont exist and even if they did would likely cause as many if not more problems than they fix.

But it is worse than that.

The 2 degree target of the IPCC does not factor in the feedback loops that such as the increased albedo effect caused by the 70% loss of ice in the arctic, The release of methane from a thawing arctic. (there is more energy stored in the arctic methane than there is in coal in the world). This is called the methane dragon. If the process of the release of the methane, currently frozen in the soil and ocean beds of the arctic, which has already begun, spins out of control we are looking a an 8 degree rise in temperature. (this ignores the scientists that don't see this feedback stopping and ends up resulting in the world oceans boiling off and earth becomes Venus...but I digress.

But it is worse than that

Buuuuut...   we’re told over and over again he’s not Morpheus but he IS Dream.   Daniel, the baby that was transformed and is now Dream of the Endless.

And yes, I get that Morpheus is just an aspect of a greater whole. A facet of a being that is essentially a giant crystal made up of smaller facet entities.

Now, aside from Daniel-Dream being rendered a complete self-congratulatory moron in The Dreaming spin-off “I did not interfere because I did not want any martyrs.” (Among nightmares?!)  Note: I cannot forgive the writing that had Nuala going back under that glamour as a form of “empowerment” or Matthew’s idiotic and pointless death, or Goldie’s Pokemon‘s Cubone backstory, or Echo being shoved down our throats but I digress... 

I can’t help but feel that bread crumbs were laid to show that all is not as it seems in the realm of Dreams.

Item 1.   When Abel is murdered by The Kindly Ones (issue 66, part 10 of the Kindly Ones) he tells them that they cannot kill.  They can push their victims to suicide and they can push the victim to repent their sins but they cannot kill. They argue that he barely counts as alive and wouldn’t truly be dead unless Morpheus was killed anyway.

They say Morpheus, not Dream.  They said the name Morpheus.   The names have significance and importance all through this story.  This can’t just be a slip up.  Regardless, Daniel is able to bring Abel back exactly as he used to be, either via the memories he inherited from Morpheus or the piss-poor description given to him by Cain in his habitual bashing of his beloved brother. Would this have been possible if he was truly dead as The Kindly Ones inferred?

 Item 2.   And this one is a big one, perhaps the biggest one.    Hob AKA Robert, Morpheus’ immortal friend, has a peculiar dream shortly after Morpheus’ Death.   This is in The Wake Epilogue Sunday Morning, issue 73.   Robert Dreams of Morpheus.  This is important.  

A. Wouldn’t dreaming of someone like Morpheus make him live again even if it’s as a Dream Entity?  He- is- Alive. 

B. Did Daniel recreate Morpheus as a Dream entity for this dream?  Even if it means he’s been reinvented as a Dream Entity instead of as Dream of the Endless wouldn’t that mean Morpheus exists once more but free of being Dream of The Endless?  Was that his whole plan?   To die and then be re-created by Daniel so he could escape his role as Dream of The Endless? 

Is he living on Earth now under the name of Neil?   I wonder...  (This question is asked with tongue firmly in cheek.  I’m just still amused by the physical similarities.  I do NOT think Neil Gaiman is literally a preternatural being.) 

C.    Doesn’t this mean at least a version of Morpheus has to exist?  Even if he is now a Dream entity he exists.  We’re told over and over again that it’s never just a dream.  Such as with Constantine in issue 3.

In fact that comes up in Exiles (issue 74) that nothing is truly lost.  That’s a recurring theme in these comics.

D.   Destruction / Creation.  Destruction was in Hob’s dream. Hob / Robert never met Destruction.  He mentions that man looked like a lousy painter he saw once but never made that connection that the painter was one of Morpheus’ siblings.  One of the last times Robert dreamt of Morpheus was when Morpheus was going to Hell to rescue Nada and Morpheus had wanted to say good bye.  This time he saw Morpheus walking off into the sunset with “the painter.”   Was Morpheus giving Robert a farewell before he wandered off, having essentially done as Destruction and Lucifer had?   He resigned but he had done it in such a way that he was free from being Dream of the Endless yet there still was a Dream of The Endless to take care of things?   

E.  If Morpheus died and Daniel became Dream of The Endless but brought him back (perhaps as a Dream / Nightmare) that means Morpheus would be free of being Dream of The Endless, yet alive and have already paid his price to The Kindly Ones in his original death.

F.   Also if not Creation than Change.  Destruction became “Change” as we saw by his meal preparation (even if it wasn’t a very good meal).  Morpheus walked off arm in arm with Change in that Dream.  So ultimately if the moral is “Change or die” he did choose Change after all.   

G.   Why / How would Robert have dreamt of Morpheus being with Destruction when Robert had never known the painter he once encountered was Destruction?  That means the dream isn’t purely the product of Robert’s grieving, like when he dreamt of his lover who was killed by the hit and run.  That can’t be from Robert’s imagination.  If the dream was from Daniel why would he concoct this?  Why include someone Robert doesn’t know unless he’s trying to tell Robert something and used Robert’s dreaming as an excuse to resurrect Morpheus?  A version of Morpheus outside of Daniel lives.   He has to or that dream could not have happened.

H.  Remember Destruction’s quest to become a force of creation, to finally embody that “other side of the coin” as he believes all The Endless represent an aspect of sentient life and it’s opposite counterpart.   What if he’s finally done it?  Destruction is also change / Creation and he helped bring back his own wayward brother?

I.  Notice how Death isn’t there but Destruction is.  This stands out because when Wanda gave her ghostly farewell she was standing with Death.  This suggests that Morpheus is not dead as he is not with Death now.  The Destruction of his old identity and birth of a new one perhaps?   Change.  

J.  Daniel has no personal attachment to Hob / Robert.  Morpheus does.  Why would he be given this sort of dream unless Morpheus, himself, wanted Robert to have it? (Or if Daniel inherited that attachment when he became Dream).   One of the last times Robert dreamt of Morpheus it was right before Morpheus went to Hell to try to rescue Nada.   But if the dream is from Morpheus that very much means Morpheus has to be alive.  This was set after Morpheus’ death.  

K.  I don’t think anyone just dreams of The Endless.   Especially two of them, one of which he had only known as a random artist.  Daniel created this dream for a reason.    

Item 3.   A Dream of Cats, and Sandman: Overture have repeatedly told us that all it takes is a thousand souls to all dream of the same thing all at once to make it so.   Sandman has over a hundred million readers world-wide.  Neil Gaiman, himself, has said so.  Wouldn’t we have dreamt him back to life by now?

Item 4.  In Sandman: Overture all the different “Aspects of Dream” meet in the Edwardian era.  Each one is a different persona, a different incarnation of Dream of The Endless.

But they are not all Morpheus.  In fact they have enough autonomy and individuality and separation that for most of the story Morpheus mistakes Desire as a Cat incarnation of himself and none of the others are lost when the flowering version of Dream was killed.

  So that means theoretically that though Daniel is Dream of The Endless he CAN co-exist with Morpheus eve if they both are Dream of The Endless (or if Morpheus has freed himself from that burden).  Hell, they could even live in the same castle and not have to run into each other.

Morpheus always wanted a companion that was more like himself.  What if Daniel should have always been that companion and not his replacement?  Someone to ease the burden of ruling The Dreaming and to co-run things with  him.

All this time and it still feels like Neil Gaiman is writing ways to possibly bring Morpheus back, as if he’s struggling (and failing) at keeping him dead.  Just let it go. It’s all right.  Let him live again.  

Item 5.   Morpheus is a master of illusion.  He has created illusions so elaborate that they have tricked and deceived Gods, such as when he created the illusion of Loki to suffer under the snake, after he freed the Japanese Thunder God (that Loki swapped places with) all while Morpheus let the real Loki run free.  It took some time for Odin and Thor to realize it wasn’t Loki under the snake but an illusion.

Item 6.  What DID Morpheus and Loki talk about in private after Loki agreed to be in his debt?  Why was it not covered in the comics?  We have seen Loki kill people rather than be in anyone’s debt but suppose- just suppose the old trickster somehow did pay his debt in taking part in an elaborate charade?  

If Morpheus faked his death, it would not be hard for him to do, nor would it be impossible to trick The Kindly Ones the way he tricked Odin and Thor.   If Morpheus is somehow alive but no longer Dream of the Endless (or at least no longer acting as Dream of The Endless) who or what is he?  Did he settle on Earth and become a best-selling fantasy writer?    (Again, this part is just a joke because the physical similarities amuse me.  I really shouldn’t have to keep posting this disclaimer.  It spoils the joke.) 

Item 7.  Fiddler’s Green / Gilbert gives this annoyingly pretentious speech about why he shouldn’t be raised from the dead, because then his death loses all meaning so Daniel halts mid-way through resurrecting him even though choosing to stay dead kind of already gives his death no meaning.  Life is what gives life it’s meaning, Gilly, not its death.  

I initially took this scene to be Neil Gaiman using Gilbert as his mouth piece to lecture DC / Vertigo to not resurrect Morpheus but what if the reality is he only doesn’t want them to resurrect Morpheus because Morpheus never truly died as Abel implied.  “What died is a point of view.”  This also grants that indefinite safety net that Morpheus can’t fall victim to substandard writing quality like certain other characters have.  Isn’t that right, Danny?

Now here’s the important part.   If we go by issue 19 of House of Mystery Volume 2 it appears Daniel brought Fiddler’s Green Back anyway, despite his pretentious protests.  Could he have brought Morpheus back despite his protests?

Before I proceed I am going to say something potentially controversial in the Sandman fandom.   I HATE the scene.where Gilbert refuses to be brougth back. 

 I love Sandman.  I think it’s a gorgeously written work that I am deeply fond of but I hate that scene.

I hate that scene more than words can describe.  I like Gilbert but this scene… This scene…   His lines are pretentious and draw me out of the story entirely.  It is the only moment of Sandman where I feel knocked out of the lush and beautiful story given to us by Neil Gaiman and knocked over the head with a commentary that doesn’t really feel like it fits.  

Anne Rice fans suffer this sensation in the very first chapter of Blood Canticle and I, as a Sandman fan, suffer it here.

First, a death seems to have meaning because it was a terrible occurrence. The one who died still suffered it.   Still gave their life for a cause.   If they are brought back to life that doesn’t undo what they suffered.  It doesn’t change that they thought they would not come back.  It doesn’t change that they were mourned.  And it doesn’t change that they died without any knowledge or belief that they would come back.  It doesn’t change that sense of loss that was there at the time of death.  That cannot suddenly be erased.  

Joss Whedon handled resurrection surprisingly well in Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season six.  Was it the best season of Buffy?   Probably not.  It had it’s flaws- glaring ones (i.e. Spike’s near rape of Buffy) but it had its good points too.  The way Buffy’s death was handled was one of its good points.  

You can watch Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season five and still feel the weight and impact of Buffy’s death and sacrifice.   You still feel the grief of her friends.  Just because she comes back a season later doesn’t undo this, it doesn’t change that she didn’t know she’d come back, her friends didn’t know, and coming back- in and of itself, was traumatic.

You can’t undo a great story just by bringing back a character who died.  If the story is that fragile it wasn’t very strong to begin with, was it?

Resurrections, themselves, can be traumatic and devastating.  Buffy suffered because of her resurrection, ripped from a place of peace and comfort (“There was no pain, no fear, no doubt ‘til they pulled me out of Heaven…  I think I was in Heaven…”)   And as a result her death still packs a powerful wallop.    

Gwen Stacy was brought back in the Spider-Man comics (and later killed again…) but in that time people still wince and gasp when they revisit her first death, or watch the film version with Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man.

Most Game of Throne fans theorized that Jon Snow would come back but the death was and is still agonizing to watch. The resurrection doesn’t change that.  In fact there’s trauma tied to that resurrection because it damages the soul and there could be other side effects later.      

If something is truly well written than nothing can undermine that.   Nothing can take away the original impact.  That will always be there no matter what.  Sandman is such a work.  

Sandman is brilliantly written.   If Morpheus ever comes back there needs to be two stipulations.   1.   The impact of his death and resurrection would have to be handled with the utmost care.  And 2. (And this is a given) Neil Gaiman himself would have to write it.  There is no one else who could be trusted with it.  But if (this is a hypothetical if) if Morpheus ever came back I don’t think that could ever harm or undermine the original story.   It’s just too good to be that fragile.

I lost my mother to cancer.  I lost my stepfather to a drug overdose (that was probably suicide).  I lost people in my life and I won’t romanticize it.    I won’t pretend that the way they died had great meaning or purpose.  I miss them and sometimes resent.  I resent that my mother was a chain smoker.  I resent that my stepfather wasn’t stronger for my little brother who still needed him.  I miss the good times.  

When we mourn, we don’t mourn because of how the person died, we mourn because they are no longer alive.  We mourn the life. We mourn the things that never were- the potential that never came to pass.  We mourn not having them there in our own lives anymore.  

Life is what gives life it’s meaning, not the death.   Life doesn’t have value because it ends.   If you can’t find value in life without the fear of it ending, I don’t think you truly value it.   Life - really living is the appreciation of physical sensation, intimacy, connection with others, culture, art, history, all of that.   Life is what gives life value, not its ending.  

Too many works of fiction talk about immortality as a great tragedy.  

“Woe is me.  People I love will die.”   We mortals experience that too, constantly actually.   Stop acting like we don’t suffer loss.  That’s a pretty big part of the human condition.  

“Alas, I cannot find value in this because I have lived so long and have experienced all possible things already.” (I hate this trope!)

Oh, bullshit.   You’re five-thousand-years-old.   I doubt in those previous centuries you experienced binge watching Stranger Things Season two on Netflix while eating Pop Secret Homestyle Popcorn as you sit in a bean bag chair in a New York City apartment while it’s snowing outside.   Bronze Age hazelnut pudding while watching hogs wrestle each other for grubs in the afternoon sun doesn’t count.  Now shut up and pass the popcorn before I give you another “experience” you probably didn’t have centuries ago.    

To quote a certain Disney musical: “There is more to be seen than can ever be seen, more to do than can ever be done.”   LIFE is what gives life it’s purpose, not its death, not the looming dread that you can die.  But the infinite possibilities that come with simply being alive.      

Gilbert (in those above panels) is romanticizing his own death.  No, Gilbert, your death didn’t have meaning.  Even if it did, your insisting on staying dead undermined that meaning entirely.   It turned it into nothing more than pretentiousness.

And that’s why I’m kind of glad we get this throw away line here in House of Mystery Volume 2 issue 19 suggesting that Daniel didn’t listen to him after all…

Gilbert is Fiddler’s Green.  He’s a place in The Dreaming with sentience.  The place wouldn’t exist unless Gilbert was brought back from the dead despite what he wanted.  And Cain would know this.

Ha!  Thank you, Cain!  In one talk bubble I feel a certain vicious pleasure in knowing Mister “I must stay dead for my death to have meaning” was unheeded.  Is that cruel?   Perhaps.   But honestly I don’t care.  I don’t like when death is treated like the only way a life can have value.   And honestly, this throw-away line doesn’t undo any of the impact of reading the end of The Kindly Ones arc in Sandman or The Wake.  Hell, even Daniel bringing back Merv Pumpkinhead doesn’t undo how I felt when I saw the poor guy get blown to bits.   And even when Goldie wailed for Abel I still feel for the little guy though I know Daniel brought Abel back fairly quickly.  

Gilbert’s own speech about wanting to stay dead, in my opinion, did more harm to the sense of loss about his death, than the House of Mystery Volume 2 implication that he was brought back anyway.  

It’s Gilbert’s little speech that, I feel, lead to the craptastic death of Matthew in The Dreaming spin-off comics, which not only felt unnecessary but also felt like a bad rip-off of The Wake from Sandman.   So yeah, I kind of resent Gilbert / Fiddler’s Green a bit.  And he was such a sweet-hearted character for the most part too…

Death is a big deal.  It’s important.  It’s painful buuuut it’s not what gives life its purpose and it doesn’t suddenly increase the value of that life or how deeply someone is mourned.   That mourning comes from what the person did while alive, not merely that they are dead. The mourning is for the potential of what might have been, and for the experiences you will never have again with that person (or in the case of character resurrection) what the characters and reader thinks they’ll never have again.

I’ve met too many people who wax poetic about death and I’ve seen too much in the way of suicides and suicidal people in my own real life.  

I have a friend I’ve had to stop from doing harm to themself- have a friend I’ve had to call their mother in the middle of the night to keep them from doing something awful.  I’ve had to deal with said depressed friend rant and rave and even lie because they were angry I stopped them and pretend I somehow misunderstood what was going on… And eventually apologize to me and admit that they were going to kill themself.  And that is brutal to endure.  

As people like Voltaire (the musician) can tell you, this is all too common in the Goth / Gothic community.  People who relate to Gothic fiction thinking they have no way out in bad situations and then they read poems and stories where death seems to be the answer, because when you feel that way, you are drawn to works of fiction that reflect how you think and feel.  It’s why Voltaire had to write a song like Feathery Wings, because he has seen it and experienced it first hand, that sense of helplessness and had to overcome it and persevere.   We need more hope.

So I’m tired of fiction (particularly Gothic fiction) treating death like some great way to end a story.  I love Gothic fiction.  Is it wrong to want to see Gothic fiction with a little hope?          

I love all things Gothic but I’m tired of Gothic fiction treating death like it’s something better than being alive.  

“To die.  To truly be dead.  That must be glorious.”  - Bela Lugosi as Dracula.   Did no one realize that was the first emo vampire quote?

I may love Gary Oldman’s Dracula and Frank Wildhorn’s Dracula musical, but I feel Fred Saberhagen’s Dracula books and Frank Langella’s Dracula blow them out of the water.  Why?   Because ol’ Drac can be made sympathetic and realistic without wanting to die.   He likes being alive despite what he does.   And I appreciate this.  In fact I love it.    

It’s irresponsible to treat death like the best possible turn out for a character, to not hold value to the life itself.  It’s not death that gives life its meaning.  It’s life that gives death it’s meaning.  

When you die I imagine these questions for the newly fledged ghost.  Did you live well?  Did you taste all that you wanted to taste? Did you have good sensations?  Were you loved?  Did you do anything to make the world a better place because you were in it?  Did you help others?  Were you kind?  Life is what gives life its meaning.  

Romeo and Juliet may be tragic but I’m far more satisfied by the end of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.   And honestly Romeo and Juliet’s deaths ultimately always felt so senseless to me…  

In Sandman I hate that no one was able to make Morpheus value his life despite his grief and loss, that there was no one to comfort or console him.  I hate that no one (save for Madness herself, little Delirium) tried to save him.  I hate that he felt like death was the only way he could reconcile his past.  I hate how alone he was even when Matthew tried to stay with him in the end.   I hate that the character underwent all that change and beautiful character growth and evolution and still “had to die.”  (Whether he literally died is debatable and subjective but you know what I mean).  

Death doesn’t have to be cruel.  Death isn’t ugly.   The embodiment of Death in Sandman is beautiful and simply fulfilling her purpose but she tries to be kind, tries to be a friend.  And she may also represent life.  The Ankh isn’t truly a symbol of death after all.  It’s Life Eternal.   She’s not treated as a cliche and yet here we get the old Gothic literature cliche.

It’s a petty thing to treat death like the ultimate way a story should end.   And I’m tired of it.  I’m tired of death (the action / event, not the anthropomorphic personification).

I’m not a fan of repeated comic book deaths and resurrections.  I never want Morpheus to be treated like Wolverine up to his umpteenth death in Marvel comics.  But I’m honestly tired of modern Gothic fiction feeling like the protagonist must die for the story to have purpose.  

Look at what they did to Showtime’s Penny Dreadful.  That wasn’t deep and meaningful.  That was senseless and petty.  The romanticism of killing characters for “purpose” or because they can’t bear to be alive is ugly, overrated, and done too often. I hated how Penny Dreadful ended, and in fact I felt that Vanessa’s Death spoilt and undermined a certain potential to break the most annoying of Gothic cliches.    

And yeah, I’m a Sandman fan who kind of hopes Hob’s dream wasn’t just a dream and that Daniel may have ignored someone else’s protests about probably not wanting to be brought back…

To Hell with wanting to be dead.  

Life matters. Your life matters.   Keep living.  Even if it’s hard, keep living.  You’ll find the good eventually.   These are the things people need to know, in fiction and reality.   It might be hard.  It might hurt but there’s good too.   There are things worth knowing even in the agony of loss.   There are things nothing can take away.

Hope is never truly gone.  Where there’s life, there’s Hope.  

Never, ever let go of Hope.  

Anyway, I went on a bit of a tangent there.  Sorry about that...

Item 8.   Morpheus wanted to quit.

Morpheus did not want to be Dream of The Endless anymore but he felt bound by his obligations and responsibilities.  He witnessed Destruction essentially quit and Lucifer retire to Earth.  

But Morpheus felt he couldn't do that.  At least not so long as he was Dream of the Endless but what if he found a way to exist but not as Dream of The Endless?  

Item 9.  Desire can enter The After Life.  This might not mean much (If Anything) but in Sandman Overture we learn that Desire can, not only enter the after life, but also pull souls out of the afterlife, as he / she does with the ghost of little Hope in Overture.  

Item 10.   “And nothing is truly lost.”  These are the lines issue seventy four (Exiles) ends on.

Item 11.   “Tired.”

Morpheus tells Death that he’s tired.   And I already brought up how that is what Lucifer said before he went to Earth but it was also Gilbert / Fiddler’s Green’s explanation as to why he left to Earth.  Until Morpheus says it, every character who said they did something because they were tired, it’s an immortal being going to live on Earth as a mortal.  Is Morpheus Neil Gaiman?

Item 12.   Remember what Morpheus said on the flight in Brief Lives?

He tells her that you can stop being anything.  I got the impression Morpheus doesn’t want to be Dream of The Endless anymore but that is not quite the same as not wanting to be alive.   

Item 13.  Nuala’s quote about running. 

Item 14.   Stars.    During The Wake issue 72 “The Lost Pages” we see / experience a spiritual assertion ending with the implication that Morpheus’ essence may have become a star now watching over The Dreaming.   Thanks to Sandman: Endless Nights and Sandman: Overture it is confirmed that in The Sandman continuity, much like in Stardust, the stars are never just stars.

In fact, according to “Little Endless” (Debatably canon) Morpheus’ sigil before creating the helm, had been a star.   

Item 14.  It’s my understanding that Neil Gaiman has repeatedly said that Morpheus had to choose to change or die and “he made his choice” but has he ever specified “he chose to die”?  Has he ever literally used those words?

Item 15.  Morpheus compares Dream of The Endless (as a whole) as a crytal or jewel and each aspect is a facet.  He is a facet.  And he talks about how if you move the Jewel you will see yet another facet and that facet isn’t the whole but part of something much bigger.  However a facet damaged on a crystal or jewel weakens the whole thing, causes a permanent damage.  For the jewel to be repaired it would have to be entirely reshaped, otherwise you have a horribly damaged rock.  ...Unless the jewel is merely turned and the original facet being isn’t replaced but just now hidden...

Item 16.   What death?  Matthew died in The Dreaming spin-off but now no one remembers that he has died and no one brings it up.  But to be fair that was a pretty awful comic and it didn’t deserve to be canon.   My point is if they ever do bring up Matthew’s death or explain why he’s back (though I doubt they will) the same could theoretically be done for Morpheus.   

Item 17. Cluracan’s dream.   Cluracan was rescued by Dream.  He told the story when time was distorted at The World’s End inn.  But in The Kindly Ones Morpheus and Nuala don’t seem to remember it. This indicates that it has not happened yet.  But at one point would there have been time for that to happen before Morpheus’ death?   The only explanation I can come up with is Morpheus is not truly gone because he would have had to make that visit later. 

Item 18.  And then there’s Neil Gaiman himself.  Despite “killing” Morpheus in 1996 he wrote Dream Hunters in 1997 then Endless Nights in 2003, Sandman: Overture between 2013 and 2016. 

He can’t resist going back to Morpheus.  Despite officially ending the story in 1996 he has revisited it at least three times since then. And each time writing for Morpheus.  Perhaps I’m mistaken but he only has so much backstory he can write (despite making Morpheus eons old) before he runs out of backstory and will want to write him in present day.   Morpheus is an itch he simply can’t scratch.   

So there you have it.  if Morpheus is ever brought back by Neil Gaiman within the Sandman Universe it won’t be because he’s a sellout.  It won’t be because he’s burnt out and run out of ideas. It won’t “ruin” the original Sandman.  The clues were there all along.   Morpheus is not dead.

Something else to note though not really related.   Neil Gaiman claims Morpheus doesn’t pet things but Daniel does.  I am pretty sure this is a genuine mistake but Morpheus does pet Cain’s head when he returns from Hell in Season of Mists and he pets the top of Baste’s head when he pays her a visit.  This isn’t quite related but I just thought I’d mention it.   Unless it was to establish how Morpheus IS changing and if that’s so then how could he have chosen death over change?

 Morpheus was changing whether he willed it or not.  If your choice is to change or die and he was already changing doesn’t that mean he chose change over death?

Avian ancestors did not go from "lump on back" to "wings." Cause for that to happen you need a reason to have the lumps form in the first place, and then STAY there. What purpous would having extra stuff on your back to carry around have? How would that be an evolutionary advantage? Epic Movie (Re)Watch #156 - Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

Spoilers Below

1) So there is this longstanding opinion that of the first nine Star Trek films, the odd numbered ones are weaker than the even numbered ones. And of the trilogy made up by Star Trek II, III, and IV, this is definitely the weakest. BUT it is also the strongest of the odd numbered ones with the original cast and not a bad movie at all.

2) Leonardo Nimoy made his theatrical directing debut with this film, making him the first Star Trek actor to direct anything Star Trek. This would be a pattern later seen in feature film directors William Shatner and Jonathan Frakes, while a number of other cast members would direct TV episode of their respective series. According to IMDb:

Paramount studio chief Michael Eisner resisted the idea of Leonard Nimoy directing, because he mistakenly thought that the reason for Spock's death stemmed from a hatred that Nimoy had about Star Trek. (He believed that it was written in Nimoy's contract that Spock had to die in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)). Nimoy told him that the contract is "in a file in the basement of the building you're sitting in" and suggested that he "get someone to pull it" for him.

Nimoy does a fine job as director and went on to do an even finer job in the sequel Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. But more on that later.

3) There is a gap in the opening credits of the cast where Leonardo Nimoy’s name would go. Although he is in this film, it is largely at the very end while other actors play younger versions of Spock until then. I like that they left that gap. It signifies the hole left in the crew by Spock’s death.

4) One thing I think this film does better than Wrath of Khan (and which The Voyage Home will do better than this film even) is flesh out the original crew members who are not Kirk, Bones, or Spock. An early example of this can be found in this exchange:

Kirk: “Mr. Scott, have you always multiplied your repair estimates by a factor of four?”

Scotty: “Certainly sir. How else would I maintain my reputation as a miracle worker?”

5) Christopher Lloyd as Kruge.

I love Christopher Lloyd, okay? Back to the Future is my favorite film of all time and Christopher Lloyd is freaking amazing in it. So the Back to the Future fanboy in me is more than happy to watch him in this film. And while he is no Khan, Kurge is a very admirable villain. Nimoy casted Lloyd because of his ability to be operatic, something which can be seen very well. Lloyd plays Kurge’s unhinged nature very well and even makes him a physically intimidating bad guy. Again, while he’s no Khan, that does not make him a bad villain. In fact I think he’s the best part of this film. He injects every scene he’s in with such life and energy that you can’t help but be drawn to him. Lloyd even said in an interview that this was one of his favorite roles to have played.

6) Bones’ having Spock’s mind in him is a perfect example of both this film’s greatest strength and flaw: great characters, not as great plot.

Bones having Spock’s mind in him creates for some great internal conflict and characterization. DeForrest Kelley gets to have a lot of fun in the part and it is a treat seeing Bones outside of his comfort zone and finding the middle ground between him and Spock. Unfortunately outside of one brief bar scene it doesn’t lead to much action in the plot. And by action I don’t mean blowing stuff up as much as doing something. What if Bones did something he thought was logical because he had Spock’s brain, but screwed up immensely because he’s not thinking like himself or like Spock but like the someone who wants to be one or the other. I’m a sucker for character development and studies, which this film provides in mass so I’m grateful for that. But unfortunately some of the fun and energy of other Star Trek films is lost in the process. It’s not a fatal flaw, the film is still good, but I do think it is its biggest weakness.

7) It bothers me so much that they just dropped Carol Marcus (Kirk’s ex and David’s mother, as well as lead scientist on the Genesis project) in this film and its sequels. Like seriously? There was no room in the script for even a namedrop? Why isn’t she studying the Genesis planet? Why are you dropping this awesome new female character? Why!?!?!?

8) Oh Bones...

9) Nichelle Nichols was originally upset at her minimal amount of screen time in the film, but was pleased when she saw what she got to do with that screen time.

10) The fact that this captain is so casual and relaxed when he’s dealing with the theft of a ship concerns me.

11) While this film does do great with it’s characters, I feel like David and Saavik sort of suffer in this film. I think Robin Curtis does a good job in the part, but (in part of the writing and direction I imagine) she loses some of the energy and rashness Kirstie Alley brought to the part. She is a bit more of a stereotypical Vulcan, which is a shame because Alley’s strong headed nature was in part what made the part so interesting in the first place. David meanwhile is seen mostly as a scientist who made brash decisions in the past but (except for one notable FINAL decision on his part) largely does what is expected of him in the situation he finds himself in during the film. I would’ve been interested in seeing them push these characters and challenge them a bit more, but maybe that’s just me.

12) Remember how I said Kurge was the best part of this film?

Kurge [after his Klingon crew member blows up a federation ship]: “I wanted prisoners!”

Klingon: “A lucky shot!”

Kurge: “Animal.”

13) I will say that the potential relationship (platonic or otherwise) between David and Saavik is interesting, but I would have personally preferred a focus on the relationship between David and Kirk as father and son respectively. That’s not to say the film is bad because it doesn’t feature it (you should only ever judge a film based on what it is, not what it isn’t), it is just a personal preference I have.

14) So Spock - while regenerating from a boy into a man - has to go through pon farr. Pon farr is the process where every seven years Vulcans (male and female I believe) become aroused. They get blood fever, become violent, and eventually die I think (my knowledge of deeper Trek lore is defined largely by Wikipedia) unless they mate. So Saavik helps Spock but all we see is...well...

Was that sex? Did they have hand sex or something? Or did we just cut away before they had sex? I know there’s a deleted scene in Star Trek IV where Saavik is pregnant with Spock’s baby, but since it’s deleted I don’t know if it’s canon. I just don’t really know what happened.

15) Hey, that’s John Larroquette!

You probably wouldn’t see that if you weren’t looking for him, but still.

16) The death of David unfortunately doesn’t have much of an impact on me. I like the decision to kill him off in theory and I like that it is done in defense of Saavik and Spock (therefore making his character more active in the plot), but I am not invested in him enough as a character for it to effect me. The worst part of it is how it effects Kirk, which I will admit is greatly effective seeing the famous captain break down (even if only for a brief moment) because of the death of his son who he barely knew.

17) I think the decision to destroy the Enterprise is the best plot point in this film. It is the last thing you would expect and a great portrayal of just what the stakes are. This ship was as much a character in the 18 years since the original series as Kirk or Spock and we witness it’s destruction.

Kirk: “My god Bones, what have I done?”

Bones: “What you had to do What you’ve always done. Turned death into a fighting chance.”

18) Have I mentioned I really like Skurge as a villain?

Skurge [after being told the planet is killing itself]: “Yes. Exhilirating isn’t it?”

I don’t find his final fight with Kirk to be very effective though. Like David’s death, it just sort of happens and then is over for me. This might just be my own take on the scene though.

19) Yes. This. A developing relationship between Bones and Spock.

Bones [to a comatose Spock]: “But it seems I’ve missed you. I don’t know if I can stand to lose you again.”

20) I LOVE the entire ending scene on Vulcan.

It is interesting, compelling, and very well done. The entire Enterprise crew sacrificing their careers and futures to save their friend moves me. Bones literally risking his life for an ancient procedure all at the chance that Spock can live again is great and speak not only to his character but to their relationship. But the best part is the very final scene, where an absent minded and slightly amnesiac Spock speaks with Kirk and we see just how great their friendship is.

Spock: “Why would you do this?”

Kirk: “Because the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many.”

[Beat.]

Spock: “I have been and always shall be your friend.”

While weaker than the film which precedes and follows it, Star Trek III is still a worthy inclusion to the Star Trek canon. Its plot may be a bit weaker, but the analysis of the characters and their loyalty to each other (specifically to Spock) is the beating heart. There is some nice humor, great acting, and solid directing from Nimoy. All in all if you’re a fan of Star Trek or you liked Wrath of Khan, you should definitely give The Search for Spock a watch.

The Crimson Pendant.

//Or, in other words, most of my headcanons regarding Kuronue’s pendant and the reasons why it was “something important” to him, important enough to him to put his life on the line to try to retrieve it. Some I had posted years ago, some others I kept forgetting to do it (I’m the worst mun, considering I’ve been running this blog for over 4 years now and I’ve also had this muse for 5 or so, ha). It’s going to be a long post, kids, you’ve been warned.

For the new readers/followers/visitors, it’s worth noting that my Kuronue did not exactly die in the bamboo trap. His body was dragged out of it nearly lifeless by orders of the owner of the fortress we see in the second movie (Honoo no kizuna/Poltergeist Report) and put in a dungeon where his health was restored via black magic, his youki sealed by the same means, and spent years locked away, suffering different sorts of torture at the hands of this man and his subordinates. Clarifying this because it’s related to the main subject of this post.

First things first: He got it from Kurama. The “full” story you can find here.

Neither of them knew exactly just what kind of powers or abiilities it held or if it even had any.

Kuronue was the one who chose to wear it despite Kurama strongly advising against it several times for obvious reasons. The bat had (still does) a strong liking for the little shiny object and the glowing red stone on it. The fact that it was a “rare” only added to all of this, too.

Aware that Kurama isn’t exactly the kind of person who believes in things such as luck, Kuronue started referring to the pendant as his “lucky charm”, just to tease the fox a little, cause they had always been little shits to each other since the beginning, and neither seemed too keen on the idea of changing their ways on that matter, not so much at least, even if there now was actual respect between them.

“Perhaps it IS a lucky charm...” Kuronue once mused out loud, time -years- after he’d first started referring to that piece of jewelry as such, holding the blood-red pendant by its chain, examining it for a moment in the dim lights of the room both, him and Kurama, were resting in after a particularly big and successful heist. They were still far from being as infamous as they would later become, yet they had been gaining more and more power, wealth and respect (mixed with fear from other youkai most of times) among other things for a long time. Of course they both knew it was due to their hard work and skills combined, yet, Kurama never said anything against such musings -not outside their usual back and forth friendly shit giving at least- from then on.

Unknowingly, the more Kuronue wore the pendant, the more it fed not only from his energy but also from his soul, taking a small part of it’s essence and storing it within more exactly, something that didn’t cause any pain or discomfort to the bat, hence why Kuronue ignored what was going on.

Neither of them were aware of any of that until several years later, when they found out some information on the pendant through some acquaintances they made along the way. These youkai specialized on buying and selling all sorts of artifacts, rare magic ones among them, and as such, they had a vast knowledge on the matter. One of them showed great interest in Kuro’s pendant and even offered a big amount of golden coins for it despite it’s current state at the time -light scratches on it’s surface, mostly, all of which had come from his daily activities, of course-, an offer that Kuronue turned down on the spot. The other youkai didn’t push the subject any further as soon as he learned the bat had been wearing it for a while now and proceeded to reveal what he knew about it, which was basically how it works (same I’ll explain in the following bullet points).

What started as a shocking truth soon became something completely different. While it certainly had some big downsides (as they both would learn the hardest way several years later), having “part” of one’s soul in an artifact like this crimson pendant wasn’t as bad as it could seem at first since this item was made mainly for healing purposes. Putting it short, it was a healing aid for it’s owner and a greatly reliable one as it worked directly with the owner’s energy. While not exactly a substitute for traditional healing techniques, Kuronue appreciated that greatly regardless as he’d sometimes come home with a wound or two (or three...) after a job; the artifact making it easier for his body to recover in a shorter period of time than it normally would.

It was also mentioned to the thieves that, once the owner dies, the energy and essence within die as well, leaving an empty “vessel” that not always can be used again by someone else.

The pendant can also be used to store determined amounts of youki and hide them within so they can’t be easily sensed by others thanks to a spell in it (being the owner himself and youkai with high magic skills and knowledge on this piece and the specific spell on it the exceptions to the rule). The spell can be broken if one wants to either turn the pendant useless or be able to use it for themselves, but it’s difficult to do such thing given the “rare” origins of this item and, hence, the lack of information about it.

With that said, it’s easy to understand why no one showed any real interest in it during the time Kuronue was kept prisoner after the bamboo trap incident and how he was able to keep it with him all the time regardless of some of his captors knowing of it’s existence. Much to the bat’s fortune, they all dismissed it as “a useless trinket” as well as “some sort of emotional comfort” (the latter being not entirely wrong) and thus decided it was best to let him keep it for a while, that way he’d have something to cling to so he didn’t end up giving up and letting himself die -they wouldn’t let him die just yet anyway-, which essentially translated into more time for them to "have some more fun” with him and as a way to make sure Kuronue always had a reminder of better days and a little hope of ever making it out of there. Then again, it’s impossible to break a spirit if there’s no spirit to break.

Talking about the imprisonment time, the pendant played a key role in his escape. As some of you know, Kuronue’s youki was almost completely sealed all the time he was captive, leaving him only pretty much the amount necessary to live. The small extra amounts of youki his body managed to re-gain/regenerate sometimes, he stored them within the pendant, hiding them from everyone around, waiting for the moment when he’d finally build up a decent amount of energy and for a chance -the only he’d ever have perhaps- to try and fight his way out.

In the movie, it was never mentioned if the pendant Kaiki (the youkai that impersonated Kuronue) was the real one or a fake one so, in my headcanons, it’s safe to say Kaiki’s was a fake one while the real Kuronue had the real pendant with him all the time.

With all of this I’ve mentioned so far, it’s easy to see why Kuronue refused to leave his pendant behind while trying to escape the fortress that, to this day, represents Kurama and Kuronue’s last heist together. Had he left it behind, his fate would’ve changed drastically, excruciating relentless pain and a consequent death being the biggest possibility of all if the pendant was destroyed for, basically, part of his soul would’ve been crushed, most likely causing the rest of it to eventually shatter along with it, causing in the end (and I’ll quote SH1 here) a fate worse than death, as there would literally be nothing left from him. No soul, no spiritual remains, no nothing to go to an afterlife/heaven-hell/whatever you want to call it after leaving this plane -keep in mind that, in the yyh universe, there is an afterlife-.

If you asked Kuronue if he still thinks of his pendant as a “lucky charm”, he’ll right away tell you that he does, without a doubt. However, it wasn’t always like that as there was a time he experienced mixed feelings towards it (by now you should have a good idea as to why).
