Galena, Illinois
One of my favorite places to visit is the town of Galena in the north-west corner of Illinois. It is a popular weekend getaway location for Chicago and Chicago suburb residents. My parents used to visit it over the weekend when I was a baby, but unfortunately I don't remember any of those trips! I had the fortune of visiting the town in 2021 and again in 2022.
It is a beautiful old-fashioned town surrounded by beautiful countryside. In the 19th-century, it was a lead mining town, hence the name "Galena." During the ice age, the land was not flattened by glaciers which is why the town is hilly, despite being in the midwest.
In the 19th-century, it was a very prosperous mining town and was more populous than Chicago from the 1830s to the 1860s. It was located on a stream connected to the Mississippi, making it also a trading town. As you can see in this photo, the silt thrown up by the frequent steamboats shrunk the steam and made it too shallow to steam through. Here are also some artworks housed at the Galena history museum of Galena during its peak.
The highway to Galena is the Ulysses S. Grant highway! :) That's Elihu Washburne's house in the background, too! I haven't gotten to visit it yet...
This is the post office that was built by Ely S. Parker, a member of Grant's staff during the Civil War and later U.S. Commissioner of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Here is Main Street!
This is the Galena Methodist Church that the Grants attended!
The train station!
This is the history museum! I will post more about it later :)
As I said earlier, there are a lot of hills...
This is the oldest home in Galena, the Dowling House. They have tours! It is also supposedly haunted.

On SALE now! Pre-order Price Guarantee: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/for-a-chance-to-walk-on-streets-of-gold-by-claire-weiner/
For a Chance to Walk on Streets of Gold is a personal history that weaves deftly across time, place, and generations. It moves from Poland and Russia where the poet’s grandparents were born and escaped persecution, to Chicago and its suburbs, where the poet grew up, to Florida, where her parents retired. Without sentimentality, but with respect and tenderness, these #poems speak of a #family’s vulnerabilities as well as joys. The reader experiences a deep sense of empathy for suffering and an equal ability to celebrate success.
Claire Weiner was born in Chicago and raised in the Chicago suburbs. She attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa, and then received a master’s in social work from the University of Chicago. Except for a decade in Los Angeles, she has spent most of her adult life in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She spent her decades-long, non-writing career working as a psychotherapist, helping people make more sense of their life stories. She began writing in earnest when her children were grown. Her work has been published in After Hours Press, Burningwood Literary Review, Uppagus, Muddy River Poetry Review, Pennisula Poets, Bear River Review and others. She and her husband now split their time between Michigan and Arizona, grateful to be surrounded by natural beauty in both places.
PRAISE FOR For a Chance to Walk on Streets of Gold by Claire Weiner
How finely wrought and realized these poems are. Ms. Weiner proffers a sampler only, but a sumptuous one, a harbinger of the feast forthcoming.

The Genie Team - Season 9 - “Siege of Chicago”
I do have a fresh idea for one episode of season 9 of The Genie Team… which I call “Siege of Chicago”. And this post serves as a list of important details and events about this episode. (note; I HATE it when my own ideas are altered or sugarcoated… and I HATE it when my ideas are completely ignored)
Genie Amara and Genie Michelle are possessed by spirits of evil, meaning that they have absolutely no control over their actions, emotions and desires.
Genie Amara and Genie Michelle are not bound by the rules of the genie, meaning that their wrists have no golden genie bracelets/handcuffs, they’re not connected to lamps, and they have free will to kill.
Working as a duo, Genie Amara and Genie Michelle create a category 7 super-hurricane with Chicago in the eye of the storm, and the hurricane covers the rest of Illinois, all of Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and nearly all of Kentucky, Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri, and half of West Virginia, and western Pennsylvania and western New York (state)… and the hurricane has 450mph winds, super heavy rains and downpours, lethal floods, and F-6 to F-7 tornadoes.
Genie Amara and Genie Michelle attack Chicago in the middle of the night, and seel off the city by attacking it and killing tens of thousands (possibly hundreds of thousands) downtown and in the neighborhoods and surrounding areas around the city (like how the Decepticons did in Dark of the Moon, but much much much worse).
The category 7 hurricane is formed in the blink of an eye in the middle of the night, taking the effected states by surprise and resulting in countless more deaths in those states.
The tsunami summoned by Genie Michelle is only half as tall and strong yet as fast as the tsunami in the movie “Geostorm”.
Matt, Inez and Jackie are among the 15,000 survivors in downtown Chicago. But they wouldn’t immediately alert Ellie and the genie team as they’re mainly focused on surviving the attack on the city… and they won’t alert Ellie and the genie team until the next morning when Amara and Michelle have completed their task at seeling off and isolating Chicago.
The New York Central, Pennsylvania Railroad, Chesapeake & Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio, Milwaukee Road, Burlington Route, Chicago & Northwestern, Northern Pacific, Great Northern, Union Pacific, Illinois Central, Gulf Modile & Ohio and Santa Fe engines are luckily out of the hurricane’s range.
Halfway through the episode, Genie Amara and Genie Michelle come frighteningly close to finding out the location of the Magical Emeralds.
When Genie Trista tries to use Dark Void on Genie Amara and Genie Michelle, the two evil-possessed genies dodge the attack and it hits me instead, putting me into a deep sleep and having neverending nightmares, resulting in Mina being out of the battle so she can watch over me.
Being possessed by a spirit of evil, Genie Michelle’s Deep Aqua Mirror has a dark special ability; creating evil clones of whoever is reflected in the mirror.
All of Chicago (downtown and surrounding suburbs and settlements) is flooded in water reaching 40 to 45 meters high.
When Genie Amara and Genie Michelle are sealed inside their lamps and are ridded of spirits of evil, the hurricane and the destruction to Chicago are magically undone, but not the casualties, and all residents in the surrounding effected states are not magically undone.
Out of the 2.8 million people in Chicago, 2,785,000 are dead by morning, leaving 15,000 people left, and Matt, Inez and Jackie are among those survivors, and most of said survivors are in the tall buildings in downtown Chicago.
Upon morning, Genie Amara and Genie Michelle are standing upon the two tall white attenas of Willis (formerly Sears) Tower.
With an emergency this big, the entire Genie Team is mobilized.
During the destruction spree, Genie Michelle uses her Deep Aqua Mirror to create swarms of demons from the reflections of Chicago residents.
During the initial attack on Chicago, Genie Amara uses her Space Sword to slice clean cuts through buildings.
During the night of the attack, Genie Amara summons lightning strikes that trigger 3-ton TNT-level explosions, with 10 lightning strikes per second.
Genie Amara and Genie Michelle aren’t actually fully revealed until they’re seen atop the Willis Tower the morning after the attack.
The hurricane’s heavy winds and massive downpours, as well as the 40-45 meter-flood in Chicago, cause the Mississippi River and the surrounding connected rivers to rage and and turn into a force of killer floods, effecting the states and settlements both inside and outside the hurricane’s reach.
Extra 1: before this episode, there’s a buildup to this episode throughout season 9 to where news spread about major cities and most other human settlements in India, China, Russia and North Korea being destroyed and erased one by one… and all human settlements in the Asian deserts, ranging from Israel to Mongolia are also destroyed and erased… and few survivors are left in China and Russia. Only Saudi Arabia is left unscathed.
Extra 2: this map shows the whole area that would be in the eye of the category 7 super-hurricane.
Extra 3: One way Genie Amara and Genie Michelle spread death and destruction outside the hurricane’s range is summoning meteor showers that destroy most of Seattle, El Paso, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, Arlington, Dallas, Houston, Charlotte, Raleigh, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Sacramento, Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Luis Obispo and New York City.
Extra 4: 65% - 70% of the population in Europe is destroyed throughout season 9 (after China, Russia and India are dealt with) and Mount Vesuvius erupts at twice the destructive intensity of its eruption in 79 AD.
Extra 5: Before attacking America, Genie Amara and Genie Michelle have completed decimated the military forces of Russia, China, India, Europe, with all bases, factories, nuclear silos, military harbors, and air bases completely destroyed.

I've driven from the southern tip of Illinois to a place that's within an hour of the Wisconsin border at the north, it's over 5 hours and most of the time i was in the middle of fields, driving down a stupid highway. There's this huge...what do they even call the places with all the wind turbines? A farm? Is it a wind farm? Wind factory? I don't know. Point is, literally it's nothing but those. And in the dead of night, they all have little red lights that flicker. It's like a horror movie. Darkness, fog, not another car in sight. Red flickering lights surround out, but there isn't any starlight. Just that, and nothing else, for what seems like an eternity. If a car does show up behind you, it's damn near terrifying. You get scared you're in Jeepers Creepers. If they show up in front of you, chances are they blind you with their brights. The red flickering gives way to pure darkness, so thick that you can't see all that far in front of you. And then you end up in a small town. Dilapidated buildings surround Main St, and you get the feeling it's the only commercial area for all 103 people that probably live there. And then it's gone in a second, and you're surrounded by nothing again. There are probably fields of corn or soy beans surrounding you, but you can't see well enough in the moonless night to make anything out. You have to stop once or twice along the way, at the very least, just to fill up on gas at a place that looks nearly abandoned, only the overhead lights and an employee inside letting you know they're even open.
After a while, and i do mean around 3 or 4 hours, that gives way to suburbs. Mostly filled with white people with very little culture, if any. You might find a few points of interest, if you look hard enough. But they're the sort of 'attractions' that you drive by and look at for three seconds before moving on.
This is a state that actually has shit to do, too, but 90% of it is in Chicago or the surrounding area. There's a few other areas, if you're into nature, but still. A lot of the USA is farmland, some states almost entirely so. When people say there's nothing in their state, they truly mean it's mostly suburbs or mostly farmland or a mix of the two.
always blows my mind as a european when people talk about states like “yeah theres nothing in ohio/montana/wyoming/etc” because i look at a map like but. but theyre so big. every state could qualify as its own country what do you mean theres nothing there. and then i ask people from those states and theyre like “yeah theres nothing here” what do you mean theres nothing there!!!

The Haunted Atlas
Hull-House - Chicago, Illinois
41°52′18″N / 87°38′51″W
A Chicago landmark, now a museum, which in 1913 was widely believed to house a living "Devil Baby." Hull-House is still included in some haunted tours of Chicago and is said by some to exude an uncomfortable atmosphere.
Hull-House was built in 1856 as the residence of Charles J. Hull. Located in what was then the southwestern suburbs of Chicago, the house became surrounded by factories and tenements that housed thousands of immigrants. In the late 1880s, the house became the United States first welfare center, founded by social workers Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr. The center provided numerous services to the large numbers of immigrants who settled in the area. Hull-House was an oasis of comfort. It became so successful that a third floor was added. Eventually, 12 more buildings were added.
Addams had become interested in social work while traveling abroad in England. In the slums of Whitechapel, the setting of the famous Jack the Ripper murders, she went to work helping the poor and championing social reforms. When she returned home, she was fired with a zeal to do the same work in Chicago. She leased Hull-House and turned it into a settlement house for the poor, the abused and the homeless. She campaigned for funds among the wealthy women of the city.
Addams died in 1935. Her work has been continued by the Hull-House Association. Hull-House moved to new quarters in 1963, and the original house was preserved as a museum.
In 1913, a strange rumor about a so-called Devil Baby hidden away inside Hull-House seemed to come from nowhere and gather great speed as it spread throughout the communities of immigrants. For about six weeks, throngs of women descended upon Hull-House demanding to see the Devil Baby. The perplexed and vexed Addams explained and reexplained that there was no basis to the rumor.
In interviewing women about the story and why they believed it, Addams discovered that it seemed to be based on fears of the plight of immigrant women, especially older women with Old World mores and superstitions that involved religious beliefs and the treatment of women.
The story had various ethnic versions. According to the Italian version, a young Italian woman defied her family and married an atheist. She became pregnant right away. A few months later, she hung a picture of the Virgin Mary on the wall. This angered her husband, who tore it down, ripped it up and swore he would rather have the Devil in the house. The couple was punished with the birth of a baby who looked like a miniature Satan, with horns, cloven feet, pointed ears, a tail and a scaly body. It could walk and talk and would run about the house threatening the father. It danced on church pews, laughed hideously and smoked cigars. Finally the father took it to Hull-House and beseeched Addams to take it in.
Other ethnic versions varied only in the sins that brought on the monstrous birth:
* An Irish girl failed to confess to her priest that prior to her marriage she had conducted an affair with
another man.
* A Jewish girl married a Gentile without her parents' permission. Her enraged father said he would rather have the Devil as a grandchild than have a Gentile for a son-in-law.
* A Jewish woman, who had several daughters, became pregnant. Her husband, desirous of a son, told her that he'd rather have her give birth to the Devil than to another girl.
* Two young Jewish women, one of them pregnant, attended a performance of the play Faust. The pregnant one looked too intensely at the stage devil.
* An Orthodox Jewish woman hid the truth about an illegitimate child, claiming that her second child, born in wedlock, was her first. Her third child was the Devil.
The visitors who came to Hull-House were convinced that Addams had taken in the Devil Baby and locked it away in the attic. Rumors circulated that discounts were being given to view the child. One man from Milwaukee called to say he wanted to organize a tour. Another woman, from the poorhouse, borrowed a dime to ride the trolley to Hull-House in hopes of seeing the monster, only to be crushed to hear the truth.
The rumor finally diminished. Addams wrote about the event in her book The Second Twenty Years at Hull-House, in which she theorized that the story had fired the imaginations of women who largely felt excluded from mainstream life in America. The Devil Baby was something they could grasp and understand. Seeing it would elevate their status.
The story has refused to die, however. It was rumored that the child remained locked in Hull-House until it died or that it was removed to a retreat in Waukegan, north of Chicago. Reports continue in present times that the Devil Baby still can be glimpsed in an attic window of Hull-House.
Other haunting phenomena have been reported. Addams's ghost is believed to haunt the premises, as well as the ghost of a woman who allegedly committed suicide in an upstairs room (no documents exist to substantiate the suicide). Individuals also have claimed to photograph ectoplasm and phantom monks inside the house.
The story of Hull-House was an inspiration for Ira Levin's 1967 novel Rosemary's Baby, in which a young wife is tricked into giving birth to the Devil's child.

Top Tips for Buying Horses in Chicago
Purchasing a horse is a big decision, whether you're a seasoned equestrian or a first-time buyer. Chicago, with its diverse equestrian community and ample stables, offers a wealth of options for prospective horse owners. However, navigating the world of horse buying can be overwhelming if you're not prepared. Here are the top tips to help you make an informed, confident decision when buying a horse.
1. Know Your Purpose
Before diving into the market, take a step back to assess your needs and goals. Why are you buying a horse? Are you looking for a competition partner, a pleasure riding companion, or perhaps a workhorse for ranching or trail riding? The right horse depends on your specific activities.
Competition Horses: If you're aiming to compete in disciplines such as dressage, jumping, or barrel racing, you’ll want a horse with a strong pedigree, advanced training, and relevant experience.
Trail Horses: For leisurely rides through the countryside, a calm, steady horse with good stamina and an easy-going temperament is ideal.
Work Horses: If your focus is on working cattle or other ranch duties, look for a horse with practical experience and a sturdy build.
Identifying your purpose will help you narrow down your options and focus on the horses best suited to your needs. Click here to know more information about Buy Horses in Illinois.
2. Establish a Budget
Horses come in a wide price range, from affordable options to elite, high-priced show horses. Establishing a budget will guide your search and prevent overspending. However, keep in mind that the initial purchase price is just the beginning. Owning a horse comes with ongoing expenses for:
Boarding (if you don’t have your own property)
Feed and supplements
Veterinary care
Training and riding lessons
Tack and equipment
Be sure to factor in these costs when determining your budget, so you can comfortably cover the expenses throughout the year.
3. Research Local Sellers
Chicago and its surrounding suburbs are home to numerous equestrian centers, breeders, and private sellers. To find the right horse, start by doing thorough research into reputable sellers. Some options include:
Equestrian Centers: Chicago is home to several well-established stables that specialize in boarding, training, and selling horses. These centers usually have a variety of horses for sale, each with detailed histories and performance records.
Breeders: If you have a specific breed in mind, contacting a local breeder is a good option. Ensure the breeder is reputable, and ask for references or reviews from previous buyers.
Private Sellers: You can find horses listed for sale by private individuals, but exercise caution. Always request detailed information about the horse’s health, training, and history. It’s best to see the horse in person and, if possible, observe how it behaves in different environments.
4. Evaluate the Horse’s Health
One of the most important considerations when buying a horse is its health. Request a comprehensive veterinary check-up before making a decision. A pre-purchase exam will identify any underlying health issues that could affect the horse’s performance or longevity.
Soundness: Ensure the horse is physically sound and free of chronic issues that could affect its ability to perform.
Vaccination and Medical History: Ask for records of the horse’s vaccinations, deworming schedule, and any past injuries or surgeries.
Age and Lifespan: While older horses can make great companions, their lifespan and ability to handle heavy training or competition might be limited. On the other hand, younger horses can be more energetic but may require more training.
Work with an experienced veterinarian who specializes in equine care to get a thorough evaluation.
5. Consider Temperament and Experience
A horse’s temperament is crucial, especially for less experienced riders. You need a horse that suits your level of riding skill, whether that’s a calm, beginner-friendly animal or a more spirited horse for advanced riders. Key temperament traits to look for include:
Calmness: A steady horse is ideal for beginners or those looking for a reliable companion.
Training: A well-trained horse is easier to handle and can save you time and effort in teaching it new skills.
Personality Fit: Spend time interacting with the horse before making a decision. Does the horse seem friendly and approachable, or does it show signs of anxiety or aggression? A horse’s personality should align with your needs and riding style.

In the outskirts of Chicago lies a suburb that is home to a hidden gem of dental healthcare – Ifantis Dental care. This clinic has become synonymous with impeccable oral health services, especially in the specialized field of implant dentistry. The residents of Morton Grove, Illinois, and the surrounding areas have been witnessing the transformative smiles courtesy of the expert implant treatments available at Ifantis Dental care. With the keywords “Dental Implants Morton Grove” and “Implant Dentistry Morton Grove IL”, this clinic not only marks its expertise on the map but also stands as a beacon of hope for those dreaming of a flawless smile.
Understanding Dental Implants
Dental implants are the gold standard for replacing missing teeth because they offer a long-term and often permanent solution. An implant typically comprises a titanium post surgically inserted into the jawbone, which then fuses to the bone over several months in a process known as Osseo integration. Once stabilized, this post serves as a robust foundation for a crown, bridge, or denture that matches the patient's natural teeth.
Implants have revolutionized how we deal with tooth loss, providing benefits beyond aesthetics. They help preserve the jawbone and maintain the facial structure by preventing bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing. Additionally, implants restore the ability to chew efficiently and do not require alteration to adjacent healthy teeth, which is often the case in traditional bridge placement.
Ifantis Dental care: Pioneering Implant Dentistry in Morton Grove IL
Ifantis Dental care, led by a team of dental virtuosos, is at the heart of bringing advanced implant dentistry to Morton Grove, IL. Draped in a mantel of serene professionalism, the clinic presents a welcoming environment where cutting-edge technology and evidence-based dental practices are the norms rather than exceptions.

Each smile is a signature — distinct and personal. Ifantis Dental care embraces this philosophy by delivering personalized implant treatments tailored to individual needs and desires. From the initial consultation to the final placement of the prosthetics, patients receive undivided attention and care.
Their stringent protocol for implant placement begins with a comprehensive oral examination, including digital imaging and sometimes a 3D CT scan to evaluate bone density and structure. Ifantis Dentalcare also offers a variety of dental implant options including single tooth replacement, implant-supported bridges or dentures.
