Graffiti Depicting Gladiators Found in Pompeii
Archaeologists have uncovered ancient graffiti depicting gladiators during excavations of the house of the Casa del Cenacolo Colonnato enclosure in Pompeii.
Pompeii was a Roman city, located in the modern commune of Pompeii near Naples, Italy.
Pompeii, along with the Roman town of Herculaneum, were buried under 4 to 6 metres of volcanic ash and pumice during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.
Recent excavations at the Casa del Cenacolo Colonnato enclosure on the Via dell’Abbondanza have found ancient graffiti drawings made by children using charcoal. The graffiti was likely made just prior to the volcanic eruption and depicts several scenes of Roman gladiators.

Gabriel Zuchtriegel, Director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, explained that children living in the complex must have come into contact with this extreme form of spectacularised violence at the amphitheatre.
“The drawings show us the impact of this violence on the imagination of a young boy or girl, subject to the same developmental stages that are still found today,” said Zuchtriegel
According to the archaeologists, drawings in a corridor adjacent to a service courtyard depict a scene of two gladiators confronting each other, along with a hunting game (venatio) featuring two bestiarii armed with spears.
In an area of the complex used for the storage of amphorae, another series of drawings were uncovered portraying two figures playing with a ball, a wild boar, and a boxing scene. Another boxing scene in the complex immortalizes the act of “knock-out”, but this depiction has been partly covered by whitewash and was drawn using a red mineral pigment.

This is a list of impressions and bad reviews written by greek and roman tourists on an Egyptian Tomb after visiting it:
“I visited and I did not like anything but the sarcophagus!”
“I was here.”
“I admired.”
“I, Ammonios, singularis of Italy, saw and admire it.”
“I cannot read the hieroglyphs.”
“Why do you care that you cannot read the hieroglyphs? I do not understand your concern!”

Fact of the Day 15.11.22 Graffiti has been found on the walls of the tomb of Ramesses VI in the Valley of the Kings that dates back 2000 years and was believed to have been left by Romans. Some inscriptions include “I cannot read the hieroglyphs” and “I visited and did not like anything except the sarcophagus”.

My favourite, which I think was found in Herculaneum: "We have pissed in our beds, we admit that we should not have. You ask why? There is no Chamberpot."

random person: so you like roman history huh? must be one of those fan girls who like the gods.
me, visibly shaking and rotating like i’m in a microwave: do you know that gladiators were often sex symbols to the women of rome? graffiti from pompeii describes one fighter who "catches the girls at night in his net" and another who is "the delight of all the girls." women literally wrote salacious things on walls about these men. humans are humans no matter where in history we are.

Dutch Tourist Caught Signing His Name on Ancient Pompeii Wall
A Dutch tourist has been arrested after allegedly vandalizing an ancient Roman building, near Pompeii in Italy.
The unnamed 27-year-old was detained on Monday after staff found graffiti on the wall of an ancient Roman building in black permanent marker. The tourist now faces charges of damage and defacement of artistic works, police said in a statement.

The incident occurred on Sunday (June 2) at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was also Italy's Festa della Repubblica national holiday - a day when state-run museums and archaeological sites open for free to the public, the Independent reported.
Italian culture minister Gennaro Sanguiliano said: "Once again our cultural heritage is the victim of incivility and idiocy… Yesterday it was the turn of a Roman domus in the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum, defaced by a tourist with a permanent marker." According to police, the graffiti was identified as the arrested man's tag.

Can we get a good look at the giant picture Suns has of the other iterators? I kinda wanna see it :0 It's just so grand.
Tumblr media
Sure! Sadly I don't have it all rendered/cleaned so this is a very rough sketch of it's design.
If I had more time I would love to make it look more like graffiti as I imagine that's the type of artwork Suns was inspired by.

Your rainworld ancients are just anthro dogs?
Sure they're "just" anthro dogs. If you don't find them satisfying then draw your own.
My logic was that ancients are likely related to the mammalian creatures of Rain World such as scavs, slugcats, lantern mice, and lizards. So they likely have two eyes, two ears, a nose, and a mouth. From the iterators we can infer they've got an upright posture.
From their masks they seem to have some sort of snout or long face, but maybe they have a flat face, judging by the statues in the depths and the spherical faces of iterators. I choose to interpret them as having snouts instead, because I like how it looks, and it's implied by various bits of graffiti in the game.
Tumblr media
From there I just kept drawing them to be closer to my own aesthetic preferences and I ended up with dog people.
So it goes. I like how they look, and they're very inspired by @tickfleato 's ancients.
