You might well ask what the Commander is planning to do with that wine glass, since he's wearing a full-face helmet. Writer Larry Hama addresses just that point eight issues later, in G.I. JOE #24:

This is really the thing that has kept this ridiculous series alive (it was later revived by other publishers, and recently passed issue #300): Larry Hama's weird sense of humor and flair for eccentricity. The plots are frequently not much and the heroes are mostly no deeper than the plastic action figures on which they're based, but the ludicrous villains are consistently entertaining.

BARONESS IS THE NEW COBRA COMMANDER

I am sooooooo happy with this development…and also it was a neat touch to see for the first time in the IDW-verse, a Cobra Commander rocking the Marvel Comics mask…I am impressed that Baroness got all her hair to fit under that though

The Baroness has always been one of my fave comics villains so the fact that she’s going to be playing a big role in IDW’s GI Joe comics going forward makes me a happy fangirl <3

June 1982. Literally always saying this, also. Our heroes are introduced to the Baroness, one of the more competent of the recurring villains of the G.I. JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO series, in G.I. JOE #1. Writer Larry Hama eventually fleshed out her back story to some extent, and she, like her longtime boyfriend Destro, became a somewhat ambivalent figure, particularly after she learned that her perception of some of the events that set her on the road to becoming a radical right-wing terrorist had been mistaken.

GI Joe: Remixed, the Origin of the Baroness

Baroness Anastasia DeCobray-Cisarovna is the scion of two of Europe's oldest and wealthiest families; her mother's family were Russian aristocrat who not only survived the Bolshevik Revolution, but made it work for them, and then did the same with all the various other upheavals that befell their homeland. Her father's family, meanwhile were not only old money but REALLY old money. Family records prove that they had ancestors present when Charlemagne was crowned Holy Roman Emperor, and family lore claims descent from actual Roman Emperors, who themselves liked to claim descent from the heroes and gods of myth; DeCobrays have, at various points, served, slept with, fought for, and fought against every royal family in Europe (and a few outside it). This was heady stuff to grow up with. That said, her parents were, quite frankly, awful. Yes, they were generous philanthropists, but that was founded in vanity, wishing to be seen and celebrated for their acts of charity rather than out of a genuine desire to help others. In addition to their failures as people, they were also failures as parents Her mother was cold and distant, being more concerned with her own pleasures than caring for her children. Her father, meanwhile, was cold and domineering, insisting that she do exactly as told to uphold the greatness of the DeCobray legacy...although since he was a sexist pig, that meant looking pretty. That said, she was close to her older brother Daniel, who actually was the compassionate,e generous philanthropist her parents pretended to be. And so, one day, while on holiday from the exclusive boarding school to which her parents sent her, rather than return home, she decided to visit; upon arriving at his gleaming corporate office, she was informed that he was not present, having gone to visit one of the many refugee camps his charitable foundations were trying to supply. being a willful and somewhat sheltered teenager, he decided to visit him there. Now, her homelife may have been awful, but as she traveled around the camp trying to find Daniel, she got her first exposure to true misery. This was further compounded when she did find him...dead, a US soldier standing over his bloody corpse. She immediately leaped to the assumption that the said soldier had killed him; she was quickly informed that this was not the case, that the American troops had arrived after Daniel had been shot by criminals trying to force him to hand over the valuable supplies he was bringing, but that first image was burned into her mind forever. As she grew older, she became increasingly drawn to radical politics, to Marxism and to resistance to Western (and particularly American) imperialism. The final straw came when her parents informed her that she would be married to a rising star in global politics and finance. She was unimpressed by her new fiance, the Count Von Rani; yes he was handsome and charming, but so far as she could tell, there was nothing else there; he was just another smug, self-satisfied member of the neoliberal elite, of no real substance. but what really burned her was that her parents were treating her as nothing more than a pretty face to be bargained away to increase their own wealth and prestige. she ran off, determined to join the fight against Global Capitalism and Yankee Imperialism. In shor,t she resolved to become a far-left terrorist. However, even if she's utterly rejected her family and everything it stood for, her aristocratic upbringing is a major part of the Baroness' character. She may say otherwise and even believes what she says, but deep down she looks at the world, and the people in it, through the eyes of an aristocrat, and views herself as someone who is meant to command. This rather made her early years as a terrorist somewhat difficult, since she was frequently scorned as a rich dilettante merely playing at revolution; even after she'd proven her dedication to the cause, demonstrated her skill, she still had to put up with the fact that most of the men (and more than a few women) she worked with viewed her primarily as a sex object. And then she met Cobra Commander, who gave her the respect she deserved. And when she tried to demonstrate her appreciation for this by offering him her body, CC responded to her attempts at seduction by bluntly informing her that he had no interest in her save as a weapon to use against Cobra's enemies. This was possibly the single most important moment in her life since seeing those soldiers standing over her brother's corpse. The moment that she became a Cobra.
