Guru Ghasidas was born on 18 December 1756 in village Girodhpuri, 130 kms from Raipur, Chhattisgarh in an untouchable family. Ghasidas was born in a socio-political milieu of misrule, loot and plunder. Guru Ghasidas underwent the exploitative bitter experiences specific to untouchable communities in the hindu caste-ridden society. From an early age, he started rejecting social inequity and to understand the problems faced by his community. He traveled extensively in that part of India which presently Chhattisgarh state of India and advocated equal rights for all the untouchable communities. The Satnam Panth is based on the principles formulated by him. Guru Ghasidas through Satnamin principles initiated a socio-religious order, which rejected the premier position of Brahmins and completely demolished the exploitative and hierarchical caste system. According to Satnam Panth, truth is God and there is only one God, which is Nirgun (formless) and Anant (infinite). According to the 1901 census there were around 4,00,000 people adhering to the principles of Satnam Panth. The first martyr from Chhattisgarh in the Indian war of Independence of 1857, Veer Narayan Singh, was also deeply influenced by the teachings of Guru Ghasidas. Plot: Even though they struggle to make ends meet, Namdeo (Jitendra Joshi) and Ganga (Veena Janmkar) live a peaceful life with their children Laxmi (Gauri Ingawale) and Subhan (Mihir Soni). Namdeo, who works as a gardener, will go any heights to fulfill the wants of his family. He even does some extra work and bears all pains with a smile. However, their simple life turns ugly when they are faced with a number of obstacles.

Namdeo receives unconditional family-like support from his friend Magic Mamu (Siddharth Jadhav) and his wife Saira (Manasi Naik).

Review: Parents are always expected to work hard to present a better or a comfortable life to their children. But how acceptable is when children take up the responsibility to better the lives of their parents? Such an unusual yet interesting question is explored in Sudesh Manjrekar’s Kutumb. The characters and some of the events surely succeed in moving the audience but due to the writing and execution (in some parts), the film turns out to be just a one-time watch.

During the initial moments, the writers and the director use the visual medium very intelligently. The nature of the four characters, the love between them, their problems and their everyday life is described without much use of dialogues. And once Siddharth Jadhav’s character is introduced, the proceedings get a booster. But there was no need to include two songs without any gap to prove the dancing skills of the two kids. Despite that, the first half manages to lay a decent foundation.

The events that follow are appealing alright. But now the film starts treading on predictable lines. An over-emotional scene (not possible to reveal more), involving one of the main characters, appears silly. But what hurts the most is how the audience is made to watch a dance reality show for a long duration later on. The pre-climax and the climax should have been framed in a way that it gets the audience rooting for the kids.

A very interesting fact is observed in a number of Mahesh Manjrekar’s films including Kutumb. The main protagonist receives tremendous help from a supporting character who is Muslim by religion. Apart from Kutumb (where Jadhav plays Joshi’s friend), this is seen in his earlier films Kurukshetra, Viruddh, Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi!, Mee Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy and Shikshanachya Aaicha Gho. Co-incidentally, in three of the six films mentioned, Jadhav has played the concerned character.

Technical aspects like cinematography (Ajith Reddy) and background score can be included in the plus points. The editing is fine but it should have been tighter during the dance reality show scenes. Ajit-Sameer and Abhijit Kawthalkar’s music suits the film. Dialogues (Pravin Tarde) are effective and moving.

The performance area is the biggest plus point. Jitendra Joshi is brilliant as he pours his heart out while playing a caring father and husband. He is on a roll this year. Vena Janmkar too gets into the skin of her character with perfection and presents a realistic act. Gauri Ingawale and Mihir Soni deserve huge applause for not only giving mature performances but also showing some terrific dancing skills.

Siddharth Jadhav presents a lovable act. Manasi Naik is likable too. Vaibhav Mangale plays the bad guy well while Bhalchandra Kadam, his sidekick, is not bad either.

Overall, Kutumb can be seen once if you prefer emotional family dramas. The film will need positive word-of-mouth to succeed at the box-office. It will face opposition from next week’s awaited No Entry Pudhe Dhoka Aahey.

The testing for the coronavirus infection has gone up from 363 tests per 10 lakh per day on 1 August to more than 600 tests per 10 lakh per day at present, the ministry claimed. However, the positivity rate of COVID-19— calculated on the basis of a seven-day rolling average, has come down from 11 percent during the first week of August to 8 percent at present, Union Health Ministry Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said during a press briefing. India registered 60,975 new cases of the novel coronavirus infection, taking the overall case count to 31,67,323, while the toll climbed to 58,390 with 848 fatalities being reported in a span of 24-hours, the health ministry said in its morning update. As many as 15,000 people from different age groups participated in the survey — around 25 percent of them below the age of 18, 50 percent were between the age of 18 and 50, and the rest aged above 50. A prevalence rate of 34.7 percent was found among the participants aged between 5 and 17, the survey results show. As many as 31.2 percent of the people aged above 50 have recovered from COVID-19, it shows. Among those in the 18-50 age group, 28.5 percent people have developed antibodies against the virus. Arun Jaitley‘s “proximity” to the media, to put it mildly, was New Delhi’s worst-kept secret. Actually, South Delhi’s worst-kept secret, because beyond the southern borders of the BJP headquarters, nobody cared a flying fig for the man whose mass base, as Arun Shourie once put it, consisted of “six journalists” (here, here).

Jaitley’s “affable” nature, his “telegenic face”, his “articulation”, his “helpful nature”—adjectives poured into his funeral pyre—was shorthand for one of the most well-oiled PR machineries in Lutyens Delhi, which at one level enabled a pompous unelected, unelectable, politician to grandstand on the “tyranny of the unelected“.

At another level, of course, it was the cover for “environment-friendly journalism”: the source of motivated plants against political rivals, vicious gossip against party colleagues—and “papers” which the TV studio warriors picked up from the “Todarmal Lane School of Journalism” during the day and presented as “exclusives” at 9 pm.

As an Economic Times journalist tweeted at the height of the UPA-II “scams”, it was only fair that these media houses gave Arun Jaitley a byline for their “exposes”.

Handing Arun Jaitley the Information and Broadcasting portfolio in 2014, on top of finance, was, therefore, a masterstroke by Narendra Modi in the manufacture of consent for majoritarian excesses. There was now a single window for controlling licenses and permissions, and for unleashing the taxman or keeping them at bay.

Fall in line, or else.

Phone calls ensured who would be Editor or not, which anchor which front which show and take what line, which corporate could start a channel. Greenhorn “political editors” were placed in organisations with the dexterity of a bonsai artist, a process which had begun in 2004 but gained greater currency with the dawn of civilisation in 2014.

Little wonder, Jaitley earned the sobriquet “Bureau Chief“, for the “extraordinary influence he wields at two large-selling national dailies where his favourite journalists run political bureaus” to start with, but a task so onerous and performed with such aplomb over time, that it now takes two possibly more.

Guess you didn’t hear the words “Electoral Bonds“, possibly the most corrupt scheme unleashed by the Modi government to lubricate Indian politics, over the weekend?

Little wonder, therefore, that Arun Jaitley’s death resulted in a welter of personal grief from reporters, editors, anchors, and owners almost all of them serving in the National Capital Region, and most of whom dropped any sense of distance or detachment from their friend, source, mentor, benefactor, headhunter—and walking mate.

Since this is the age of “Om Shanti”, very few journalists could say “Rest in Peace” like Sankarshan Thakur of The Telegraph, and the freelance writer Swati Chaturvedi.

Since this is the age of preening, few could even admit that they didn’t know Jaitley, the journalist turned comic Akash Banerjee being one.

It’s one thing for someone like Rajat Sharma of India TV who knew Jaitley for nearly 50 years from college, or Jaitley’s adversary from his students’ union days, Vinod Sharma of Hindustan Times, to express a genuine sense of loss.

But for a Bhupendra Chaubey of CNN News18 to bring up his school? Seriously.

For the likes of former journalists Kanchan Gupta and Swapan Dasgupta, it was the loss of a “mentor” figure, whatever that means.

For the now legendary Navika Kumar of Times Now and former NDTV presenter Barkha Dutt it was an inexplicably a lot more, although by day’s end, Dutt couldn’t understand what the hoo-ha was all about.

Supriya Shrinate, the ET Now presenter who quit to contest the 2019 general elections wrote an elaborate panegyric on Facebook.

For Sudhir Chaudhary of Zee News, it was an occasion to demonstrate the “proximity” with a recent selfie.

"I spoke to his wife, Dr. Tejaswini Ji and expressed condolences on the passing away of Shri Ananth Kumar Ji. My thoughts are with his entire family, friends and supporters in this hour of grief and sadness. Om Shanti," he tweeted. The 59-year-old political leader, who was suffering from cancer, breathed his last at Shankar Cancer and Research Hospital in Bengaluru in the wee hours of Monday. Union Home Minister also expressed shock over Kumar's demise and extended condolences to his family. "Absolutely shocked and pained by the demise of very senior colleague and a friend Shri Anant Kumar ji. He was a seasoned parliamentarian who served the nation in several capacities. His passion and devotion for the welfare of people was commendable. My condolences to his family," Singh tweeted. He also said that Kumar's death is a big loss for the BJP and a personal loss for him. Kumar was holding charge of two key ministries - Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, and Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs in the Union Cabinet. He is survived by two daughters- Aishwarya and Vijeta and wife. His mortal remains will be kept at National College in Bengaluru at 10 am for last tributes.(ANI)

Everything you need to know about reshuffle no. 3 of Narendra Modi's Cabinet

Third reshuffle of the Union Cabinet, being termed the last one before the General Elections of 2019, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday promoted sincere and hardworking ministers, inducted new faces with potential and talent to work and silently dumped all those who proved to be the non performing and could not come up to the level of the Prime Minister's expectation.

The cabinet reshuffle has been guided by the "4P" principle: "passion, proficiency, professional and political acumen", aimed at delivering on Modi's vision of "New India" by 2022, the 75th anniversary of India's independence-an idea he had first flagged in March in an address to party workers at the BJP's headquarters in Delhi.

Three Top Changes

The 'Three Top Changes' made by Prime Minister Modi during this reshuffle of Union Council of Ministers were:

One - elevating Nirmala Sitharaman to Cabinet rank and giving her the key Portfolio of Defence Ministry.

Two - Suresh Prabhu shifted from Railways to Commerce and Industry Ministry.

Anantkumar Hegde

Hegde is a Lok Sabha MP from Uttara Kannada, Karnataka. He is a Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on ExternalAffairs and Human Resource Development.

With a deep focus on rural India, Hegde is the Founder President ofKadamba, an NGO working in the field of rural development, rural health, SHGs, rural marketing and other rural welfare programmes.

Raj Kumar Singh

Singh is a Lok Sabha MP from Arrah, Bihar. He is a Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committees on Health and Family Welfare, Personnel, Pensions and Public Grievances and Law & Justice. Raj Kumar Singh is a former IAS officer of the 1975 batch, Bihar cadre. He rose up the ranks to become the Home Secretary of India.

Hardeep Puri

Puri is a decorated former IFS officer of the 1974 batch, known forhis experience and expertise in foreign policy and national security. He is the President and Chairman of Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) think tank, and was the Vice President of International Peace Institute, New York.

As Head of the Indian Delegation to the UN Security Council, Puri had served as Chairman of the Counter-Terrorism Committee of the UN as well as President of the United Nations Security Council.

Gajendra Singh Shekhawat

Shekhawat is a Lok Sabha MP from Jodhpur, Rajasthan. He is a Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance and Chairperson of the Fellowship Committee.

As a technology-savvy, progressive farmer; Shekhawat is a role model for the rural community. He has an MPhil & MA in Philosophy from Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur.

Satya Pal Singh

Singh is a Lok Sabha MP from Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. He is a Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs and Chairperson of the Joint Committee on Offices of Profit. He is a distinguished former IPS officer of the 1980 batch, Maharashtra cadre, and has been recognized with medals like the Antrik Suraksha Sewa Padak a Special Service Medal. Born in Basauli village in Baghpat, Satya Pal Singh has a MSc and MPhil in Chemistry, MBA in Strategic Management from Australia, MA in Public.

Alphons Kannanthanam

Kannanthanam is a distinguished former IAS officer of the 1979 batch, Kerala cadre. He is also a practicing advocate. He became famous as Delhi's Demolition Man when he was Commissioner of the Delhi Development Authority, having cleared DDA areas of encroachment removing around 15,000 illegal buildings. This got him listed in Time Magazine's list of 100 Young Global Leaders in 1994. Kannanthanam retired from the IAS, to get elected as an Independent Member of Legislative Assembly for Kanjirappally in Kerala from 2006 to 2011.

The Six Dropped Ministers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also dropped six ministers from his council of ministers in Sunday's reshuffle.

Those dropped are Kalraj Mishra, Bandaru Dattatreya, Faggan Singh Kulaste, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Sanjiv Balyan and Mahendra Nath Pandey.

Kalraj Mishra- Mishra was Cabinet minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

Bandaru Dattatreya- Dattatreya was Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Labour and Employment.

Faggan Singh Kulaste- Kulaste was Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare.

Rajiv Pratap Rudy- Rudy was Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.

Sanjiv Balyan- Balyan was Minister of State for Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation.

Mahendra Nath Pandey- Pandey was a junior minister for Human Resource Development.

Apart from Pandey, who has been appointed Bharatiya Janata Party's Uttar Pradesh unit's president, it is believed that others were dropped due to non-satisfactory performance. However, Mishra, claimed he himself offered to resign as he crossed age of 75 years.

5) Satya Pal Singh, 61, is a Lok Sabha MP from Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. A 1980-batch Maharashtra cadre IPS officer, he resigned as the Mumbai Police chief to take a plunge into politics.

He was honoured by the central government in 2008 for his services with the Antrik Suraksha Sewa Padak and a special medal for extraordinary work in naxal-hit areas of Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh in 1990. Singh has written books, including on topics like tribal conflict resolution and naxalism.

Born in Basauli village in Baghpat, he has MSc and MPhil degrees in chemistry, an MBA in strategic management from Australia and an MA in public administrationnas well as a PhD on the naxalite movement.

6) Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, 49, is a Lok Sabha member from Jodhpur in Rajasthan. He is also a national general secretary of the farmers' wing of the BJP.

A sports enthusiast, Shekhawat has participated at the national and all-India inter-university level in basketball. He currently is a member of the All India Council of Sports and the president of the Basketball India Players Association.

He has MPhil and MA degrees in philosophy from Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur.

7) Hardeep Singh Puri, 65, is a 1974-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and served as India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2009 to 2013.

Known for his experience and expertise in foreign policy and national security issues, he is the president and chairman of the think-tank Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS). He was also the vice president of the International Peace Institute, New York.

His four-decade career in diplomacy included critical roles as India's ambassador to Brazil and the United Kingdom, and the Permanent Representative of India to Geneva.

An alumnus of The Hindu College, Delhi University, Puri was a student leader and active during the JP Movement. He briefly taught at St. Stephens College in Delhi before joining the IFS.

8) Raj Kumar Singh, 64, is a former IAS officer of the 1975-batch Bihar cadre and a former Union home secretary. He is a member of the current Lok Sabha representing Arrah in Bihar.

Singh studied English literature at St. Stephens College and is a law graduate. He also studied at the RVB Delft University in the Netherlands.

9) K J Alphons Kannanthanam, a Kerala-cadre IAS officer from the 1979 batch, quit the service in 2006 to join politics. He was also a practicing advocate.

Kannanthanam was known as the 'demolition man' during his stint at the Delhi Development Authority between 1992 and 1995 for having ordered razing of thousands of illegal constructions.

He began his political journey by becoming an independent MLA backed by the CPI(M) in Kerala in 2006, but joined the BJP in 2011. He is not a member of either House of Parliament.

Born in a non-electrified Manimala village in Kottayam district to a World War II veteran, he pioneered the literacy movement in India as the district collector of

Kottayam by making it the first 100 per cent literate town in the country in 1989.

He was elected as an Independent member of the Kerala Assembly from Kanjirappally in 2006.

Kannanthanam is a member of the committee set up to prepare the final draft of the National Education Policy, 2017. He has authored a book -- Making A Difference.
