Guru Ghasidas was born on 18 December 1756 in village Girodhpuri, 130 kms from Raipur, Chhattisgarh in an untouchable family. Ghasidas was born in a socio-political milieu of misrule, loot and plunder. Guru Ghasidas underwent the exploitative bitter experiences specific to untouchable communities in the hindu caste-ridden society. From an early age, he started rejecting social inequity and to understand the problems faced by his community. He traveled extensively in that part of India which presently Chhattisgarh state of India and advocated equal rights for all the untouchable communities. The Satnam Panth is based on the principles formulated by him. Guru Ghasidas through Satnamin principles initiated a socio-religious order, which rejected the premier position of Brahmins and completely demolished the exploitative and hierarchical caste system. According to Satnam Panth, truth is God and there is only one God, which is Nirgun (formless) and Anant (infinite). According to the 1901 census there were around 4,00,000 people adhering to the principles of Satnam Panth. The first martyr from Chhattisgarh in the Indian war of Independence of 1857, Veer Narayan Singh, was also deeply influenced by the teachings of Guru Ghasidas. Guru Ghasidas died in 1836 at the age of eighty but his legacy is still alive in the form of art, poetry, songs and politics. . . President of India visits Guru Ghasidas Jaitkham at Girodhpuri in Chhattisgarh

The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, visited Guru Ghasidas Jaitkham and attended the Bhoomi Pujan for a Saamudayik Bhavan at Girodhpuri in Chhattisgarh today. The President said that Guru Ghasidas was a remarkable social reformer among the dispersed community of this region almost 200 years ago. He struggled against social evils and injustice and fought for the poor and downtrodden. His message was simple: that truth and noble conduct are synonyms for God. He made efforts to eliminate the practice of untouchability and emphasized fraternity and social harmony. He also stressed women’s rights and supported widow marriage. The President said that the teachings of Guru Ghasidas have given direction to social reform among not only the Satnami Samaj but in entire Chhattisgarh. He expressed confidence that by imbibing the ideals of Guru Ghasidas, the people and government of Chhattisgarh would continue to work to build a society based on equality and unity.
