summary: “We had a deal!” “I don’t make deals with fifteen-year-olds-” “I’m sixteen!” With a roll of his eyes, he departs from her - backing towards the still-opened doorway with his palms raised. “Sorry, your majesty. I don’t make deals with sixteen-year-olds.” She scoffs in reply, fists now tight around her hefty history book she wants to smash into the nearest flimsy board, for relief and maybe a little fun. “Un-fucking-believable.” warnings: nothin' but sass. physical violence? wc: 2,550
It’s Monday morning, or so she thinks. The shit-hole cabin holds a singular clock hoisted up on a dirtied wall, the plastic coated in fine dust to hide away the unmoving hands. They remain frozen in time at 6:25 AM when the sun should just be kissing the sky as it rises from a long slumber. Instead, it shines painfully bright through every opened window. Illuminating the unorganized mess she’s been living in for more than a day now. She asks Hopper if he could have chosen a more welcoming prison cell, and he tells her it belonged to his grandfather. The atmosphere shifts, and she’s suddenly commenting on the dilapidated decor, or lack thereof with a shimmering smile on her face. She’s kissing ass, and he’s laughing in agreement at just how run down it is. “I never bothered t’take care of it after he died. I just let it go. S’my fault.” The mirror to hold her reflection is stained by time. Rust creeping in like a virus around the edges, and blooming within the small cracks scattered across the surface. It’s not enough to hide unwashed hair and tired eyes, framing it all almost perfectly as she scrubs away dried spit from her teeth. It feels all too much like camping. Brushing her teeth with the aid of a water bottle, and pissing behind bushes without the proper use of a toilet. She’s never taken a vacation out into the wilderness but has a painful suspicion that this is what it was like. The closest she’d ever come to it would be when Steve elected to pitch a tent out in his large yard with the help of his mother, though still having access to anything they needed inside his home. If this was camping, it was miserable. Or maybe it was the bitterness of a night spent tossing and turning in the cold, November air.
Hopper had left sometime in the morning, waking her up long enough just to say he would be back soon before she surrendered to the ache in her bones. He was still gone, and it seemed the sun had risen high enough to signal it was now noon, or just after. Autumn is slow moving, muscles frigid and skin bruised from the abuse she had suffered, tumbling down the steps of her own home. It’s a hazy memory. But each touch to the discoloration brings her back to the moment she collides with the railing. With new light and a new day, she elects to finally sort through the mess Hopper had delivered in her laundry basket. She had only grazed the top once she spotted her toothbrush sticking out from the pile. She had only asked for the basics; bathroom supplies, a few clothes - at minimum a pair of underwear. She asks for her book bag and a goddamn actual pillow. But as she plucks and pulls, soil spills out from the fabric, and she takes a moment to process. It’s hard to even picture how it got there - difficult to stomach the idea of her sanctuary falling victim to the war of the unknown. The dirt falls to her temporary bed, easily swept away in a frantic motion to collect on the old floorboards. Autumn pulls various clothes from the basket, finally free to strip herself of a well-slept-in pajama set that she could no longer tolerate the smell of. She’s finally in warm clothes, sighing at the soft and clean fabric against her skin. She feels as if all is normal - if only for just a moment before her attention falls back on the pile. Her book bag is weighted, heavier than she remembers and it sits over a crumpled pillow. But as she moves it, a peculiar sound rattles within - not entirely expected. Inside, she finds school books - unfinished homework tucked away in folders, waiting to get a failing grade for incompletion. What rolls over their covers, however, are multiple rolled-up pairs of socks. Messy and balled up unnaturally - carrying secrets she only discovered once they were peeled apart.
Crystals and stones had been swiped from their places, and despite unknowing of their importance, they were rescued and brought to the girl in hopes tranquility would follow. Was Hopper only guessing? She can picture the man mumbling to himself as he piles the frail objects into his palm. Even the few jewelry pieces she wore for protection. Had this been her room she would have laid it all out perfectly, letting their energy fuel the small space. But this wasn’t home, and in this moment all she sees are fancy stones that go ignored in favor of school supplies. If she’s a prisoner in this place, she might as well find something to occupy her time. The room she stays in holds no natural light, forcing her out into the open where Hopper had slept for the night. He calls the too-short, rotten sofa his place of rest. Squished up in the dark where his flashlight shines down on an opened book, reading to himself and so focused he doesn’t notice the teen moving across the kitchen for a few crackers as a late-night snack. Now, the space is empty and she lays out her belongings on the creaking coffee table. As she sits, something beneath her crackles, and for a second she’s convinced the old sofa has finally surrendered, ready to collapse under the added weight. To her surprise, it doesn’t buckle, though the shift in thin blankets reveals a thin, opened book - something she was certain Hopper had been studying as she walked on by. She could ignore it. Rip it from its place, tossing it aside to avoid further damage. But black ink holds her focus - every neat curve and scratched-out sentence rings a bell of warning in her mind. It’s all too similar to someone she knows. Someone who signed permission slips, Birthday, and Holiday cards. And at the sound of Hopper’s engine, she realizes it’s been tucked beneath the sheets for a reason.
His entrance is hard to ignore. Heavy footsteps shake the boards and bags collide with the frame as he barges through, immediately locking eyes with the girl who stands far from the sofa - pretending to be busy with…nothing. She holds her book open, staring at the pages yet not truly absorbing the words they hold until he captures her attention. Bags are hoisted up onto still dusty countertops, contents piling high and nearly spilling over before he has the chance to pull them all out. “What is all of this?” One by one, it’s all revealed. Glass and floor cleaner - new rags that hadn’t been torn to shreds by moths. He even held a small canister of bleach, paired with gloves and a new bucket for the scum. “I have a broom in my car. And, most importantly,” he plucks two walkies from the bottom, offering one out to the girl. “A direct line of communication.” The teen gives an uncertain look, even skeptical as she looks it all over. “You ever hear about landlines? It’s all the rage,” The man lets out a sigh of annoyance, propped up by a strong hand over the counter, making her feel just a little smaller in the moment. “Landlines can be traced right t’you. Which, I’m not sure if you’ve noticed...you’re in hiding, right now.” Air fills her cheeks before blowing a raspberry, deflated by his tone. “Can’t take a joke, yeesh.” He continues to pull, leaving the space cluttered and a mess before tossing the bags to the side. Hopper seems ignorant to the possibilities of a secret uncovered, acting with purpose rather than tip-toeing around and examining the place where the mystery had been left. In their shared silence though, she looks. His scrawlings ran through her mind on a loop, senseless and full of wonder. “D’you see him?” “See who?” he questions without missing a beat - without even meeting her far-off stare as she’s swept away by the hurt in her chest. A wave warmed by summer's sun, boiling and burning up her insides. “My dad. D’you see him yet? Hear anything?” The question brings about a shift in the atmosphere, heavy, and filled with painful truths heard but unspoken. Autumn can see it all in his eyes, and the way his body stiffens.
She moves on, eager to ignore the suffocating feeling in her chest. “Thanks for the stuff. You didn’t have to gift wrap the stones, though,” she states with a small grin, finally closing up the book to rest just under her arm. “What stones?” “T-the gemstones in my socks? All rolled up?” It’s his turn to stare - empty eyes as his mind attempts to relive these last thirty-two hours. It’s scrambled up, a mess as he was forced into action and to take on this new role of guardian. You can see the memory light up deadened eyes as he hands the boy a list of her belongings, surrendering the chore entirely as he goes on his own path. “Steve got your stuff,” he mutters before ripping plastic away from new containers, adding to the garbage on the floor. It would have irked her if it weren’t for the sudden rush of shock to freeze each cell in her body. Autumn wonders if she had heard correctly - unable to process the idea of Steve rummaging through her dresser drawers for intimate materials. At least Hopper agreed to just scoop them all into a bag with his eyes closed. “That’s a joke, right?” When he doesn’t respond, she says a single prayer that the Earth would break open and consume her body and soul. A quick death with no afterlife for fear of repeating this same embarrassment. “We had a deal!” “I don’t make deals with fifteen-year-olds-” “I’m sixteen!” With a roll of his eyes, he departs from her - backing towards the still-opened doorway with his palms raised. “Sorry, your majesty. I don’t make deals with sixteen-year-olds.” She scoffs in reply, fists now tight around her hefty history book she wants to smash into the nearest flimsy board, for relief and maybe a little fun. “Un-fucking-believable.”
His heavy steps guide him out the door and into the wilderness. Fallen twigs and dried leaves crunch beneath his weight, allowing her to track just how far he wandered away from the cabin. The car door slams, and for a moment she wonders if he’s leaving again - until he returns with a beige box in hand, grease staining the sides. “You hungry?” There’s an immediate rumble that echoes in the small space, her body growing bored and tired of canned food and spray cheese on crackers. At their rate of bickering, she almost expects to find a mere two pieces remaining. But a nearly complete pizza proves her wrong. “Wow, the witness protection program is really stepping up its game.” The officer's stare is heavy beneath bushy brows, unamused and struggling to catch up on lost sleep for the sake of others - or even out of pure curiosity. A need to know keeping his brain wired at every minute of the day. He’s spent his morning talking business - driving all across town shopping and making plans in hopes of keeping the teen comfortable, though she doesn’t know it yet. Still, she apologizes and thanks him for the food. He could have left her for dead. He could have never cared enough to show back up at her home, waiting in the dark streets just to make sure she was okay before bursting through the front door. When his own walkie from work cuts through the silence, he’s almost grateful as he rips it from his waistband.
“What?” “Jim?” Another man's voice crackles on the other end, a heavy sigh following shortly after paired with the ramblings of another officer in the distance. “Where the hell have you been? We’ve been calling you - hell we even went to your place. No car, no nothin’.” Lips pursed and seek shelter beneath a thick mustache, the device pressed to them as he debates in a panic over what to say. He even spares a glance towards the girl, who offers no help as she tears into warm bread. “I-uh... I’ve been busy,” is his feeble excuse, sending the line into dead silence and pulling a look of disbelief from Autumn. A look that says, “That’s your best excuse?” and his shoulders immediately slouch. “Well, whatever you’re doin’, we’ve got somethin’ over at the station that requires your...expertise.” This is his reality check. Hiding out in the woods with a girl he rescued, and is now being summoned back to another world left behind in the chaos. Something forgotten as he struggled to grasp the concept of monsters and supernatural children. There’s a heavy sigh, unheard by Powell before asking about the situation. The officer watches as Autumn organizes the supplies he brought, crust hung from her teeth and pretending not to listen for confidential information. It’s a girl plucked straight out of school during lunchtime. Fists are bloody and adrenaline is long gone as she sits in waiting for her judgment. It’s someone they both know all too well; Heather Hunter. The sound of her name sparks something from the girl, looking to her protector with worried eyes, while he seems more irritated to be pulled back in with more important matters at hand. “I’m on my way,” he mutters before clipping the walkie back in place.
“Heather’s there?” Hopper spares her a glance, a dry chuckle passing his lips before moving further from her. “At least every other week. I told you, she’s bad news.” She remains unsatisfied with his response, turning back to the warm food. With a mouthful, she states, “Doesn’t seem so bad t’me.” She doesn’t notice the hard roll of his eyes, or how he snatches the hidden book from beneath the blanket before tucking it into his waistband, folded. “Don’t let anyone in while I’m gone. Keep everything locked and those windows covered.” “How long will you be gone for?” He doesn’t answer, which pulls her focus back in his direction to find him already trampling down the front steps. “Hopper!” She drops her second slice in the opened box, racing after him until she stands at the flimsy banister. “What the hell am I supposed t’do?” “I don’t know!” he calls back, clearly aggravated and uncertain of how to handle a teenager under the same roof as him. “Clean somethin’! Read a book, whatever! Just keep your ass inside!” The teen merely stares in awe and disbelief, mouth hung agape with hands resting over hips. He waits with one foot in the car, waving her off until she gives in to his demand, slamming the front door behind her. Autumn waits for the roar of his engine, and the sound of tires rolling over Earth before turning the focus back towards the sofa - now empty with the blanket tossed aside. She curses him, grumbling to herself as she parts the cushions in hopes it had just slipped through. Yet only dust collects at her fingertips.

Turning the page, building a home
Part One
Nesta begins a new life for herself after cutting herself off from Cassian, her sisters, and the rest of the group. Modern au.
---
Saturday, September 25th
The apartment is nearly empty. If not for the half-salvaged cardboard boxes and two cushions on a rocking chair, the spare rooms would have been nothing except walls and a dust-covered wooden floor.
Nesta takes it in; she stares at her shrunken world for an interminable amount of time. Afternoon sunlight streams in from the far window. She goes to it and presses one hand to the glass, her breath fogging it up as she peers out of her perch.
Is this really happening?
She feels distinctly separate from herself as she struggles to process the boxes, the bedframe, the cushions on the rocking chair—her rocking chair. Her bedframe. Her boxes full with her things, scarce as they are.
Her apartment. Her shrunken life… with a big bay window, through which golden sunlight pours in, like honey spilled into a morning coffee.
She turns back from the window and studies her living room. Emptiness has a smell, she thinks, one which she decides she’s going to rid this place of. It’s still the afternoon; she has hours before she has to pull blankets and a mattress together for sleep, and the best thing she can do right now is pull out the broom and sweep.
So she does.
She sweeps up all the dirt she can, catching the corners and edges, until the broom does about all it can do. Then she wipes, scrubbing at stains and spots, moving slowly from the stretching wood floor to the bare countertops, deciding for herself a sparkling kitchen. When she’s satisfied, she wipes down the walls, and starts all over again in the bedroom and bathroom.
Her bedframe is a skeleton in a tiny room, framed on one side with Gwyn’s old nightstand. She wipes the walnut wood down last, then sprays the room with some flowery spray Emerie had insisted on. Deciding she likes the smell, she douses the living area and bathroom in it too.
“Good,” she whispers to herself, quietly pleased.
A new start. A new start.
There’s no one dragging at her legs here. There’s no one showing up at her door at seven in the morning, bearing another invite to dinner. She has all the potential. Her shrunken world contains thousands more, and Nesta feels nothing but relief.
By dusk, she’s unpacked three boxes, all containing various, unorganized things, like clothes, paper towels and pretty bowls, spare parts of cutlery, and a couple of blankets. With a sheer bit of effort, she sets up her bed, struggling but eventually figuring it out, and makes a little nest for herself. A blanket and a pillow will do for now—it had always been enough before.
She places a plastic cup on the corner of the bathroom sink and places her toothbrush in it. On the shelf, she arranges everything to her liking. Shampoo and conditioner go in the shower—which she still needs to get a curtain for.
As she sets down a faded blue bathmat, it feels, somehow, a bit like a home.
Wandering back into the living room, Nesta looks at the few boxes left, trying to read her scribbled handwriting.
Books, books, books, on most of them. The last couple are basic things. Family things. One of Elain’s flower pots, Feyre’s second favorite wine glasses, and a few lamps Nesta’s sure Rhysand won’t miss.
These things can wait, she decides, drifting to the kitchen. Leftover pizza from when Emerie and Gwyn had come over earlier is an enticing thought, and Nesta eats two more pieces before sticking the box in the fridge. There’s not much in the fridge, she notes. She’ll have to go shopping tomorrow. Work begins on Monday.
She washes her face and brushes her teeth, tugging her hair from its braid and watching it swing loose. It’s gotten so long.
By ten, she’s curled up in her bare bed, covered in the blanket. Nesta has long since perfected the art of reading until she’s exhausted, so as to prevent the ugly feeling of lying awake in the dark; she’s exhausted now, and she shuts her book, placing it on the nightstand. With a lazy hand, she flicks off the lamp.
She’s asleep in seconds.
•
Morning comes quickly and early.
Blearily, Nesta checks her phone—it’s seven, and no one’s knocking on the door.
By eight, she’s showered and fresh-faced, and hungry. Common knowledge gained through years in Velaris tells her that there’s a bakery a block away from her building, but nervous reluctance stays her steps like sludge. Instead, she settles for cold pizza, and eats it on a paper towel as she scrolls through her phone.
Velaris wakes up, slowly, as Nesta eats. The human sounds of morning soon join the chirping of birds: voices on the street below, the quiet ticking of bikes, tinkling laughter rising like smoke. Clouds are gathering, and she thinks it’s going to be a rainy day.
Swallowing the last bite of pizza, she stands up and goes again to the window, watching the Sidra ripple to gray beneath the sky. It’s beautiful, ornate and full. She’s always loved the river.
There are so few boxes left and yet so much space to fill.
Empty, empty, empty.
Emptiness is a smell and it’s giving her a headache.
So much space to fill. Despite herself, there’s no sense of despair; only a glimmer of hope. She feels like an artist, free to fill a blank canvas.
Outside the window, a soft rain begins to fall.
Nesta settles herself in the rocking chair and calls Emerie. She picks up in two rings. “Hi,” Nesta says, watching the rain. “I want to buy a carpet.”
---
part one of my self-indulgent nesta healing fic! it’s pretty bare-bones here, but I’m going to do my best to build a fuller life for her in this story.

PROFESSIONAL BATHROOM CLEANING TIPS Well, Megan said it right! Bacteria and viruses remain in the toilet bowl even after repeated flushing. Some of them splashed outside the bowl and some remain airborne. This was proven in a research conducted by Charles Gerba, a professor of microbiology in the University of Arizona. This means that a person can get infected with these germs by inhaling or touching the surface of a bathroom, that is if the bathroom is not properly cleaned. Regular cleaning is needed in the bathroom but knowing where to focus on cleaning and how to clean it properly is very important. Where and how to clean the bathroom? Here are the focus areas in the bathroom and how to clean them properly: Showerhead Cover the showerhead in a plastic bag and pour in white vinegar. Leave it overnight and rinse it in the morning. You can also descale it once in a month using a liquid descaler and an old toothbrush. To de-clog spray holes, use a needle. Shower curtains and liners For nylon shower curtains, clean it by using some old towels and detergent and spin them in the washing machine to remove soap scum and mildew. For curtains not machine-washable, mix a cup of detergent and a bathful of warm water. To remove stains, soak the curtains in a weak solution of bleach. Shower doors Make a paste using a cup of baking soda and a few drops of distilled white vinegar. Apply the paste to the door and let it sit for an hour. Then rub it using a microfiber cloth. Tub Fill the tub with hot water, leave it for 10-15 minutes before draining. Apply a bathroom cleaner and leave it for 15 minutes. Then scrub it. To maintain its cleanliness, give it a scrub weekly. Grout If there is a buildup of molds, remove it using a fungicidal bathroom spray. Remember to spray it regularly to prevent molds from growing back. For discolored grout, brush it using an old toothbrush or a grout brush with a solution of one-part bleach to four parts water. Grout is porous and highly susceptible to bacteria growth. So to prevent moisture and grime for infiltrating, seal the grout every six months. Toilet Pour a cup of baking soda in the bowl. Let it sit for a few minutes before flushing and brushing. To remove mineral deposits and limescale in the toilet, use a damp pumice stone. It is abrasive enough to remove spots and stains without damaging surfaces. Using an all-purpose bathroom cleaner and focus on areas under the rim, the toilet handle and outside of the bowl. Bathroom sink Pour white vinegar or baking soda on the surface and into the drain. Rinse it with hot water. Hand Towels Use bleach when machine washing them. Remember to replace them with clean ones every three to four days.
WHAT PROFESSIONAL BATHROOM CLEANERS CAN DO FOR YOU? Whether you’re on a busy schedule or guests are coming over next week, here are some good reasons why you should think about hiring professional bathroom cleaners: Save time You can do more by getting a second hand, especially on cleaning. You can enjoy more time for your family, friends, work, or just take another hour of sleep. Save energy You don’t have to do the scrubbing in every part of your bathroom. Hire someone to do it for you. So, sit back and relax. Trained professionals These guys know how and what areas in your bathroom that needs cleaning. They are equipped with the skills, tools, and cleaning materials to give your bathroom a fresh new look. You don’t have to worry about discoloration on using bleach in the wrong place. Keep the bathroom clean on a regular basis The bathroom is one of the most visited places in the house, at the same time is one of the most used places. Give it a regular cleaning schedule by setting an appointment with cleaning professionals. Custom cleaning Whatever your cleaning preference is, scented or non-scented, on a budget or not, you can plan out how your cleaning can be done. Discuss this with your professional bathroom cleaners.

A hassle-free guide to cleaning your hairbrushes - Times of India

A hassle-free guide to cleaning your hairbrushes - Times of India
As much as we care for our hair, we do not care the same for the things that help us maintain our hair. Many a times, the most basic yet the most useful item for our mane, like a comb or a hairbrush, gets ignored and is left unnoticed.
While we do not forget to wash our hair when it gets dirty, we shouldn’t neglect a dirty cob or a hairbrush too. An unclean hairbrush can damage your scalp to a great extent. It can make your hair oily and dirty, which can lead to unnecessary itchiness and hair-fall problems. Despite visiting expensive hair-care salons and using costly products, leaving your hairbrush dirty can call for a lot of trouble. Surely, cleaning your comb and hairbrushes regularly can be time-consuming, but with proper method and an easy guide, you can save a lot of time and effort. Here is a hassle-free guide to cleaning your hairbrushes easily.
What all do you need? – An old toothbrush – Your dirty hairbrush – Some baking soda – Shampoo
Step 1 The first thing you need to do is pull out all the hair strands stuck in the brush. If possible, do the same instantly after combing your hair. Not only will it fasten the process, but will keep the dust and dirt away from forming on the brush. Try and pull out as much of hair strands as you can, until it is impossible. You can then resort to a fine teeth comb to remove all the leftover hair from the brush.
Step 2 In the next step, you need to fill a little tub or the sink with warm water and add some cleaning shampoo. Put the brush into the water and leave it there for half an hour. This will rid your hairbrush of all the residues and make it free of all the leftover dry scalp-tissues. Thereafter, you can add a little baking soda to the water and let it rest for a while.
Step 3
The next step involves cleaning the hairbrush bristles with an old toothbrush. This will take care of all the oil and greasiness from the base of the brush. You can also add a little shampoo to give it a good scrub.
Step 4 Finally, you can use your hands for better results. After you are done, you can use a towel or let the comb or hairbrush dry out naturally. Remember that a hairbrush takes more time than a comb to dry. Do not forget to place the bristles facing downwards, so that the water can drain out.
Once it’s dry, your brush is ready for use.

Cleaning Tips
73 easy cleaning tips that you need to know!
We have put together some of our best home cleaning tips and tricks to help you get an impeccable home for a fraction of the price. Lots of natural, cheap, fast, useful and cheerful cleaning tips, with everything from foil to vinegar and lemons, which should save you time and money when cleaning your home.
1. Use a wet rubber glove to remove pet hair.
If Fido and Felix have ruined your house and are making you sneeze, there is a cheap and easy solution. A wet wash glove can easily be dragged on soft furniture such as sofas and curtains (and even the legs of the pants!) To remove animal hair.

2. Use a flip flop to remove pet hair
You don't have gloves to wash? Use a rubber flip-flop (clean!) On your furniture it will work just as well. It is especially useful if (like us) is constantly losing flip flops and ends with the odd ones.
3. Use a coffee filter to clean glass or mirrors easily
Ah coffee, you are what brings us out of bed, and now we have discovered that you offer much more. Step up dirty windows without any chemicals: simply move them with a clean coffee filter. It works like magic.
4. Wear socks to prevent your vacuum from accumulating coins
Don't throw those socks with a ladder! Save money and small precious items by using the foot of a pair of socks on your vacuum nozzle. It will capture any changes, hair bands and other pieces before they are absorbed.
5. Clean your microwave naturally with a cup of water
If your microwave looks a bit unhealthy after too many food explosions, don't worry, you can clean it for free in a jiffy. Simply place a cup of heat-resistant water with half a lemon and its juice in the microwave at high temperature for a minute or two. 1. Leave the mixture in the microwave with the door closed for 5 minutes for the steam to do its job, then easily clean the inside of your microwave. Lemon will let your whole kitchen smell clean and fresh!
6. Reuse cleaning sponges, simply clean them in the microwave
It may seem that you are constantly buying new packages of kitchen and bathroom cleaning sponges, and not only do the costs add up, but it is not good for the environment to keep throwing away the dirty ones. Get more use of your cleaning sponges by giving them a quick blast of one or two minutes in the microwave in a high setting. This will kill the bacteria.

7. Make a quick natural cleaning product for your entire home
Feel like a magician who saves money with this easy-to-eat recipe. Simply mix four tablespoons of baking soda and a liter of warm water to make a cheap and natural universal cleaner. Use it generously on your surfaces, floors and anywhere else you need a scrub.
8. Great tip to save money: clean the scale of lime in your shower with vinegar
We love it when we can make the ingredients in the kitchen cabinet become a cleaning product that eliminates germs. If you're looking for a more natural (not to mention thrifty) way to clean your home from top to bottom, Vinegar is your new best friend. Soak your shower head in a mixture of boiling water and vinegar to easily unclog any lime. More vinegar cleaning tips.
9. Use baby oil to remove fingerprints from stainless steel.
Baby oil is not only for smoothing and softening the skin, it is also a genius for lifting fat. If your kitchen hood or other stainless steel appliances are dirty with finger marks, place a small amount of baby oil on a clean microfiber cloth and clean them.
10. Use an old toothbrush to clean your bathroom
Do not throw away your old toothbrush, it can be a really useful tool. Rinse it in boiling water to eliminate germs and use it to enter corners and cracks that your vacuum cannot reach. It is especially useful in the bathroom, to clean hard-to-reach areas around the tap or drain.
11. Top cleaning tip: use a fabric softener sheet to prevent your container from smelling
There is nothing more annoying than emptying the trash to discover that it still smells bad afterwards. If you have a stinky container, place a fabric softener sheet next to the container bag for an instant air freshener. You can also experiment with different scented varieties.
12. Stop the shoes smell like baking soda
Again, baking soda to the rescue! If your sneakers or day shoes have seen too many sweaty walks and are getting a bit annoying, it is an easy problem to remedy. Sprinkle some baking soda on smelly trainers for an instant lift.
13. Get stains of wood marker with toothpaste
If the grandchildren have gone crazy with the markers on their railings, table or anything else made of wood, gently rub it with a little toothpaste to remove the stain. Then go and give them a good scolding and a nice (easy to erase) pencil set instead!
14. Clean the brush quickly with water and washing liquid
We don't really think about cleaning our hair brushes (apart from removing hair), but when you think about it, it makes sense that they get dirty with grease and the accumulation of products, just like our hair. Get rid of debris from hair spray, dry shampoo or any other hair product by mixing washing liquid and warm water and taking a dip.
15. Make a natural cleaning product with scented vinegar to help at home
Mix a part of white vinegar with a part of water to make a basic household spray (ideal for anyone suffering from allergies, as it is very mild). Can't stand the smell of fish and chips? Add some fresh herbs to the mixture: sage has a particularly clean smell, but you can experiment with anything that is really growing in your garden.
16. Unblock a clogged drain for free with baking soda
Baking soda to the rescue once again! This time it is a wonder to unlock hair or clogged drains. Pour a part of baking soda, followed by a part of vinegar, then cover with a damp cloth while the two react with each other to clean the drain naturally. Wait five minutes and then run hot water to clean it.
17. Clean the white shoes with toothpaste
Tennis shoes a little dirty? Coaches don't look so new after some muddy walks? No one will know that they are not fresh out of the box with this easy trick. White striped sports shoes can revive by rubbing with toothpaste. Slightly mint smell, an advantage.
18. Clean the kitchen cabinets with liquid detergent
Greasy and stained food cabinets can give you a new chance of life when you mix a stream of liquid detergent with some warm water; It is amazing how much dirt will come out of your sponge. Once you've seen it, you'll make sure that this becomes commonplace on your to-do list!
19. Clean your cutting board with lemon
Our cutting boards are used a lot, from joints of meat and fish fillets, to cutting fruits and vegetables almost every night, so it is not surprising that they end up a little tired. Lemons are excellent for removing stains from cutting boards, as well as to eliminate any smell. Still not changing? Sprinkle with baking soda and repeat.
20. Silver shines quickly with toothpaste
If you are lucky enough to own some precious silver pieces and bobs, keeping them in optimal condition could not be simpler. Improve those wedding gifts and silver jewelry with a little water and some toothpaste. Rinse and dry with a cloth and it should look like new. We believe it is one of the most satisfactory cleaning jobs.
21. Clean garden furniture with liquid detergent
If your patio furniture looks neglected after a busy summer, you should remove any spots of rain, lichen and bird droppings as soon as possible. Add a stream of liquid detergent to a bucket of warm water and rub the garden table and chairs. Then rinse them with the hose.
22. Quick tip: stop rusting on garden furniture with tomato sauce
If your patio furniture has also oxidized, apply a bit of ketchup before rubbing it with a cloth; Rust will rise immediately. Then use the rest of the bottle on a delicious summer barbecue!
23. Get rid of stains on clothes at a low price with liquid detergent
It is so frustrating to stain clothes with food or drink, and why does it always seem to be our favorite outfit? Do not fear, all is not lost. Rub the washing liquid directly on the stain and then rinse with water; It works on most fabrics, including wool or delicate silk, provided you do so immediately.
24. Use ketchup to make your copper pans shine
Copper is having a fashionable moment right now, and copper pans are a great way to modernize your kitchen. If they get dirty after use, there is a cheap solution hidden in your closet. The humble tomato sauce is really excellent for cleaning, and will make the copper pans shine after a quick massage.

25. Remove wood furniture marks with a nut
Have you scraped your railings with the washing basket or hit your socket by taking off your shoes? Sounds strange, but a walnut (without shell) rubbed on furniture, floors or wooden rails scratched or scratched will be a pleasure.
26. Clean your bathroom with vodka
Is there a bottle of unloved vodka from a meeting? If you don't like making cocktails, you can always use it to make your porcelain accessories shine! Rub a little on a soft cloth and rub them.
27. Stop your pantry looking smelly with baking soda
Do you think the sheets and towels smell a bit stale during storage? Take out the baking soda again to prevent your linen closet from smelling damp. Leaving an open box of baking soda inside will mask odors.
28. Remove carpet stains with liquid detergent.
If you have just spilled a glass of wine, or something stained, on your carpet, act by dissolving a tablespoon of washing liquid in two cups of warm water and drying the stain until it disappears. Then, sponge the carpet with cold water and dry it.
29. Stop squeaking floors with baby powder
If you keep waking your husband by stepping on crunchy boards on the floor at night, he will thank you for trying this easy trick. Use talcum powder or baby powder to silence the noisy wooden floors. Drop a little to the ground and sweep in the cracks, cleaning up the excess.
30. Remove coffee stains with toothpaste.
Dirty mug? Like coffee stains on teeth, the answer to your problem is in the bathroom cabinet. Get rid of tea or coffee stains from your favorite cup by rubbing with toothpaste. Then rinse thoroughly to make sure your next drink has no mint flavor.
31. Use baking soda to clean your dishwasher
Keeping your dishwasher in good working order will save you a lot of money in the long run, and it's easy to do. To begin, shake the baking soda on a damp sponge and clean it around the edges of your dishwasher to remove any food residue.

32. Excellent cleaning advice: remove grease stains from glued clothing
If you have spots of oily food on a beloved shirt, you can save it thanks to an unlikely ally. Add a simple coke cake to your washing machine along with your detergent and run it in a normal cycle. The acid in the drink will help dissolve difficult stains.
33. Clean stains from your toilet with Coca-Cola
And that is not all that this humble soda can offer in terms of cleanliness. Put a dirty loo back to a bright white by pouring a can of cola. Let it sit in the bowl overnight, quickly rub it with a brush and then rinse the next morning to get a great effect.
34. Put a lemon in your refrigerator so it smells good
Why do so many of our favorite foods leave our stinky refrigerator? Cut a lemon in half and place one on the top shelf, one on the bottom shelf, to mask strong odors in your refrigerator.
35. Get rid of burning smells with salt
Burned your dinner? If the house now smells like burning, just sprinkle some salt on your burned pots or any food disaster to reduce it. Then reduce your losses and order a takeaway!
36. Clean your free pans with aluminum foil
Aluminum foil has many uses: on the one hand, you can use it instead of a scourer. Simply drag it into a ball and rub pots and pans. It's a great way to recycle your sandwich wrap, as well as save you money.
37. Sharpen your scissors with aluminum foil
Scissors break so easily, especially if you use them to cut paper or wrap gifts. But you don't need to replace them. Simply use your scissors to cut a piece of foil to sharpen them in an instant.
38. Remove the lime from your plate with vinegar
Keep your iron working well by removing excess lime. Simply heat it, unplug it and let it cool a bit. Fill the tank with a part of white vinegar for a part of water. Leave it for an hour, then empty and rinse.
39. Seal an envelope with nail polish
If you have a duff envelope that simply does not seal, or if you want to reseal a letter that was opened, use a drop of nail polish to glue it again. Opt for a transparent nail polish if you don't want it to look weird! We also like to use transparent nail varnish to prevent the stairs from spreading in our socks, so it is worth investing in a bottle to keep in the house.
40. Protect wood or laminate floors with a tennis ball.
Prevent your wooden or laminate floors from scratching with chairs or other furniture by cutting the tennis balls in half and placing them on the end of the chair, table and sofa legs as floor protectors.
41. Polish furniture with olive oil
In addition to having great health benefits, olive oil can be useful at home. Put a few drops in a duster and use it to polish your wooden furniture, much better than chemical polishing, and it will not cause any strong smell.
42. Cheap tip: wear old socks as dusters
Do you have a hole in your socks? Don't throw them away, give them a wash and then use them as a duster. The same goes for weird socks (which we always seem to finish, no matter how carefully we wash our clothes).
43. Use a pastry brush to clean the crumbs of your toaster
Obtain hard-to-reach crumbs and burnt pieces of your toaster by unplugging and sweeping with a pastry brush. This will help your toaster last longer and make crumbs less likely to catch and smell.
44. Get rid of greasy footprints on the walls with white bread
Sounds strange, but rubbing the finger marks with a slice of white bread will give your walls a new chance of life. We are not sure how someone discovered this, but we are grateful that they did ...
45. Prevent your washing machine from smelling vinegar
Washer smelly? Run it empty in a hot wash with a cup of white vinegar inside. This will also help remove lime and mold, making the machine last longer and clean more efficiently.
46. Clean your iron with salt and foil
If you have a dirty iron, remove accumulated dirt from the bottom with salt and foil. Turn on the iron and pass it on a piece of aluminum foil sprinkled with salt.
47. Clean your bathroom with a grapefruit
Get rid of water marks or stains in your bathtub by cutting a grapefruit in half, sprinkling some rock salt and giving it a good scrub. Have the other half for a nutritious breakfast!
48. Kitchen cleaning tip: decalcify your kettle with vinegar
Remove the lime from your kettle by filling it with half white vinegar, half water and soak overnight. In the morning, rinse it and the lime will disappear. Not only will your kettle last longer, but your drinks will also taste better (assuming you've washed the vinegar!)
49. Get rid of clothes moths naturally with herbs
Clothes moths make us very angry, and once you have them they can be difficult to remove. Make a natural repellent for clothing moths by packing some dried herbs such as lavender, clove, bay leaf, rosemary or thyme and placing it in your closet and drawers.
50. Use Vaseline to shine your shoes
Lack of bitumen? Use some reliable petroleum jelly to shine in a jiffy. It is also cheap.
51. Remove watermarks and cup rings from tables with a hair dryer.
If someone has not used a roller coaster and has marked their coffee table, use a hair dryer before cleaning the area with a small amount of olive oil. Hey-presto, good as new.
52. Clean your blinds with vinegar
Blinds can be a magnet for dust, dead insects and floating fluff. Make them look like new with an old sock. Mix a part of white vinegar with a part of warm water and rub the blinds with an old sock to remove dust and dirt.
53. Clean and disinfect your dishwasher with vinegar
Place two cups of undiluted vinegar in a dishwasher-safe container on the top shelf of an empty dishwasher and put it in a hot cycle. It should help clean the pipes and make it smell better.

54. Make a bleach of natural clothes with lemon
If the white clothes and the bedding have turned yellow or are marked with orange spots, squeeze the juice of a lemon into 4.5 liters of hot water and immerse your clothes in it for an hour. Then rinse in the washing machine or by hand and dry.
55. Remove rust from cutlery with an onion
There is no need to cry for rusty cutlery, unless cutting an onion makes you cry. If your knives and forks have rusted, glue their ends on an onion a couple of times and the rust should rise immediately.
56. Cool Tupperware with baking soda
If your plastic food tubs have seen too many packed lunches or leftovers, and they are smelling or stained, you don't need to replace them. Simply invite them to a night at the spa! Soak them in the sink overnight in warm water with a tablespoon of baking soda, and the next day, after a rinse, they will look and smell again.
57. Remove adhesive stains with vinegar
If your grandchildren have been liberal with your book of stickers and have applied them to walls, doors, furniture or basically to any place where you do not want them, you will know that taking them off can leave a sticky mark. To address this, rub them several times with vinegar and let them soak for 15 minutes. Then return with a sponge and rub the mark.
58. Keep shoes shiny with hair spray
If you just gave your shoes a good shine and you want them to look flawless for as long as possible, give them some hair spray and you will see that they shine for much longer.
59. Use toothpaste to defog mirrors
If you get upset when, after a hot bath or shower, you can't see yourself in a fogged mirror, toothpaste might be the answer! Simply rub the mirror of your bathroom with toothpaste and wipe it with a clean dry cloth before showering and hey-presto: a foggy mirror easy to use.

60. Fill the nail holes in your wall with toothpaste
It seems crazy, but toothpaste is actually a very good replacement for Polyfilla, especially if you're in a hurry. Apply holes in the wall or ceiling with toothpaste and use food coloring in the paste before applying it if you need a wall color.
61. Use a lint roller to dust off
In addition to lifting the hair of pets in your clothes (why do they always love your most elegant outfit?), Lint rollers are a useful tool to remove dust from lampshades, mantles and even shelves. Just turn it over and voila!
62. Use liquid detergent to clean the blender
Dirty blender? These small tools have a serious use in winter, from making abundant soups to cranberry sauce or even mashed potatoes. All that work can make them look dirty, so for easy cleaning, spray some detergent and some warm water and start the blender as usual, be sure to open the lid first! Then just rinse.
63. Aggie Mackenzie Cleaning Council
How clean is the star of his house, Aggie Mackenzie, emphasizes the importance of keeping your iron in the best shape. To remove any excess lime in an old iron (which will block the steam holes) heat the iron, then unplug it and let it cool. Fill the reservoir with a solution of one part of clear vinegar in one part of water, leave it for an hour or so, then empty and rinse several times with clean water.
64. Polish leather with toothpaste
If you have a leather sofa, a jacket or shoes that are slightly worn, you can easily polish them with toothpaste. Just be sure to use paste without bleach or bleach to avoid stains. Rub it with a soft cloth and then rinse it with a wet one.
65. Use petroleum jelly to stop squeaky drawers
If you have a sticky closet door or a drawer that makes noise every time you open it, make things run smoothly again with a little petroleum jelly. It also works to loosen the hinges with ease.
66. Clean brushed stainless steel with baby oil.
Remove fingerprints, old food and stains from your pans and stainless steel appliances with just a drop of baby oil, rub them on a square of paper towels. However, it is worth noting that this only works for brushed stainless steel.

Who Still Shows Up on Their First Day of Work Anymore, Anyway?
(A piece I wrote for the Mall Au)
Rose Williams, (just for those who didn’t already know), the 18 year old Dominican Jamaican who dropped out of college inn her sophomore year; the one with brown and bright, yet dark eyes and the cute tooth gapped smile and the voluptuous dark locks, which were currently falling over her rather clear face; the one who sniggles at horrible jokes, snores lightly, laid out lazily on her twin bed in an equally as small and crowded, yet big and organized room. She still slept in the same pose and had the same breathing pattern that she had unconsciously developed sometime during the 7th grade when Britney Vega made fun of her for ‘sleeping like a Gorrila’ during a sleepover she had earned a pity invite to; quietly and as gracefully as a girl can.
The plain cream walls were adorned with posters of various celebrities and photographs of the young woman all around the room as well, each depicting a time before some type of outrageous and somewhat illegal activity ensued or right after they did. There is one polaroid above her bed, held there by tape, of a time during one of these adventures. She holds the camera, effectively capturing her friends jumping across a threshold of two neighboring buildings, her face from the node up being shown. Her hair was straight then, it was a different time. But not a different Rose. It couldn’t have been any later than 10 am and everything was right in the world. Everything was preserved perfectly in the stillness of–
“Rose!” The door to the mixed race girl slammed opened with enough force to banish Satan himself from the world, or in this case, the angels of rest from Rose’s body, prompting her to push herself up on her palms, turning her head towards her door, hair still eclipsing her face. Her mother, a 40 year robust, but chunky Dominican with shortened straightened burgundy and brown hair who, too, had brown intense eyes and an ugly laugh, stood in the door way, dressed to leave, looking angrier than a rabid chihuahua who just wanted to go outside.
“Why aren’t you up yet? She asks as Rose simply yawns and shamelessly shrugs her shoulders. "Get up and get ready, you’re going to be late! You have a job now, pendejo, you can’t afford to be late.” The woman then promptly exited the room, slamming the door closed as if her presence wasn’t enough to wake the poor girl. She stands a moment later, stretching in such a way that her shoulder, elbows, and spinal column erupted in a series of tiny pops before following the same ritual with her legs. She looks to her dresser, as she did almost everyday she’d wake up in this room before raiding it like a fat kid with a stack of singles in a candy store, pulling a white shirt, monochrome shorts and some socks. She throws them on quickly, happy she decided to shower last night, though she did all around hate the idea of doing so.
She checks her phone to see just how badly she’d done herself. Rose could recall every time in her decade and some change life span that she put an alarm on, including the time from last night when she did. She double and tripled checked that she had done so. What had done her in that morning was not the lack of the alarm but the lack of noise that left her phone. The ringer. The traitorous ringer had not been on. She stares at the top section of her phone at the digitally displayed speaker with a slash through it in anguish as she remembers the point in time when she had tapped the button to turn the ringer on before looking down, about mid way, to the time. In big, bold, mocking letters, the clock read '9:50’. Rose’s brown eyes widened in shock as the synapses in her brain snapped and popped as she remembered the time written in the email; the time she was supposed to report for opening was 9:00. The store was supposed to open at 10:00
“Shit!” She exclaims, now out in the hallway and scrambling to the bathroom in a still quasi-sleeping stupor. “Watch your motherfucking mouth, I’m not gonna keep telling you!” Her mother yells just as Rose slammed the bathroom door closed. The amount of focus Rose possessed just then tripled and then quadropuled as she seemed to gain access to more than 10% of her brain.
Cabinet, open. Toothpaste, grab. Look, cup. Toothbrush, grab. Toothpaste, open. Toothpaste, queeze. Toothbrush, catch. Cold water, on. Brush, teeth.
She looks into the mirror and was met with determined eyes, the same eyes that witnessed a myriad of things she’d never be able to tell.
Toothpaste, spit. Hands, water. Water, mouth. Mouth, swish. Mouth, spit.
She turns to the cabinet above the toilet and advances it, relishing in the taste of blood in her mouth. You could’t tell her she didn’t brush her teeth adequately this morning.Cabinet, open.
Washcloth, grab.
She turns around again and slides back in place behind the sink. There was a steady intensity increasing as she felt her heart beating in time to the war drums in her mind.
Cold water, off. Hot water, on. Wash cloth, wet.
The cloth is on her face, steaming in the mirror as she, again, peers into her own soul, scrubbing a night’s sleep away from her face quickly and quietly. Her brain slows again and she backs away, nodding at herself, grabbing a handful of scrunchies with one hand and balling up the cloth with the other. On her way out of the rocked bathroom, she shoots the rag and makes it into the hamper in the corner, as usual.
She dips back into her room and grabs a brush, her wallet, her phone and her name tag before dipping out at the speed of sound. Her mother, upon seeing her come out of the room, grabs her arm, as though she was six and didn’t know how to walk, and basically drags her out of the apartment. If no one knew the two any better, they’d label it as a kidnapping with the amount of force and speed Rose’s mother brought her out and to the car. The car locks click and both women get in smoothly, pulling of just as smoothly. The radio was on and blasting a smooth 70’s styled song.
Rose smooths her hair out of her face with her hand before bringing the brush to it. She caught some naps here and there but, smoothed things out before smoothly capturing the beastly, but amazing, hair into two twin buns. She relishes how her face looks on that particular day. She looked pretty ador–.
Of course. As if her hair had become birds in a now opened cage, the hairs in the front of her head sprung free and down into her face, taunting her. Rose tries to tuck her hair back but, again and again, and again, the hair just came back out. The darkskinned girl sighs and just rolls with hit. Without even looking to her mother, Rose could already feel her mother staring a hole in her face. She takes a deep breath and closes her eyes. “What is it, mama?” She asks, as though she didn;t already know the answer. Her mother took this as an invitation and begins to chastise Rose for all of her hair decisions.
When she was 15, well technically 14, Rose had saved up money from whatever she had left over from the day, and ran down to her local barber shop and got a hair cut to a scary length, commonly known among the African American hair community as the big chop. Everybody and their moms, dads, sisters, brothers, and cousins, first and second removed, had asked her why and she simply said because she knew it could be better. She didn’t regret it either. Her hair was badly damaged before and now it was flourishing like a beautiful flower. Her mother hated it because she knew she was taking after her sister, who had done the same and stopped 'killing’ her hair, or that’s how Rose and her sister called it.
Rose’s mother, though she was full Dominican, was more invested in gentrification and the assimilation of the American culture, which dictated, for the most part that straightened hair was in and would always be. And so now, she was going on a rant, as she always did, about how 'unruly’ Rose’s 'mop’ was. The younger woman looked out of her window and remembered why she was up, in the car with her hair hating mother. The mall had always been a safe haven for her. As she looks out at the zooming streets, she’d remembered vividly all of the times she’d been there with her three friends to wait out her mother, who had to work on the other side of town, whenever she’d get in trouble. It was where she’s had her first kiss and dumped that same pair of lips. This was the very same mall where she’d broken down in front of her friends when she received notice that she’d be staying wither mother rather than her father, who now lived in Southern California and the first place she’d gone when she had runaway from home. It was also the same place where she’d first been reprimanded for running away. And now it would her first actual, non-part-time, job.All this is to say, really, that the mall was more of a home than her current and past home were homes. And she loved it more than anything.

You scrub your dishes in your kitchen sink every day, but how often do you actually scour the sink itself? We tend to think of our sinks as being “clean” because they are constantly being rinsed with water (and a fair amount of dish soap too). Over time though, germs can get a foothold (did you know that it is actually dirtier than your toilet?). So now and again, you need to get serious about cleaning your kitchen sink. Otherwise, it won’t be a sanitary place to wash your dishes!
That means rolling up your sleeves, grabbing a few cleaning supplies, and putting some elbow grease into the job. In this article, we are going to teach you everything you need to know to get your sink spotless and germ-free!
Supplies:
Liquid soap
Baking soda
White vinegar (optional)
Lemon juice (optional)
Sponge
Old toothbrush
You’ll notice we’ve listed the white vinegar as “optional” here along with the lemon juice. That is because they can be handy, but whether or not they are appropriate depends on the type of sink you have.
Here are some specific precautions for cleaning different types of kitchen sinks:
Stainless steel: Keep acids and salts away from stainless steel, as well as ammonia and bleach. Also, avoid using sponges with an abrasive texture. You don’t want to damage the beautiful finish on your stainless steel sink. Some people said that you can use lemon despite its acidic properties. If you do this, we recommend not leaving it in contact with the steel for too long — or just skip it to be on the safe side.
Ceramic: This material may be scratched easily. For that reason, you should not use abrasive materials or cleaning agents.
Cast iron: Cast iron sinks come with an enamel coating, so you must take care when scrubbing it. Abrasive cleaners, sponge pads, and wire brushes should be avoided.
Copper: Do not use harsh chemicals. Avoid acids as well if the sink has a patina. Otherwise, the patina could be damaged or stripped away.
Stone: As stone is porous, it can absorb anything that comes into contact with it. For this reason, you should not use harsh chemicals or acids.
Porcelain: Mild acids like lemon juice or vinegar are usually fine so long as you do not leave them sitting for too long.
Basic Steps to Clean A Kitchen Sink:
Start by rinsing out your sink. Get all of the debris out of the way so that you can work.
Next, dust the inside of the sink with baking soda. Get a sponge and start scrubbing. In contact with the wet surface of the sink, the baking soda will form a paste. This is a great way to pull up any stubborn debris and also take care of stains. It should give your sink a bit of a polish as well.
Now it is time to tackle the drain flaps, the faucet, and the handles. Baking soda paste works great for this as well. Switch from the sponge to the toothbrush so you can get into all the nooks and crannies.
Rinse out the sink. Get a paper towel and wipe down the faucet and handles as well so that all of the baking soda is gone.
This final step is optional. If your sink finish is likely to be damaged by vinegar, do not do it. If vinegar is safe to use in your sink, soak a few paper towels in it, and then use them to line the inside of the sink as well as the faucet and handles. Go and do something else for 20 minutes, then come back and remove the paper towels. Finish up with one more quick rinse of your sink using dish soap and warm water.
Advice for Stubborn Stains:
Got a stubborn stain that just won’t come out? You may need to do some concentrated spot work. This is where you can use the lemon juice. Try mixing it in with some borax (so long as you are not cleaning a surface where borax will be too abrasive) and scrub hard.
Alternately, you can try again with the baking soda or the vinegar. Harsher products like ammonia, bleach, and hydrogen peroxide might work if absolutely necessary, but these can damage a lot of sink finishes, so use them only as a last resort.
Long-Term Care for Your Kitchen Sink
What is the best way to avoid having to give your kitchen sink a meticulous cleaning? You know the saying, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Well, that applies with kitchen sinks too.
After every use of your sink, rinse the entire basin thoroughly. Then grab a soft cloth and wipe down all the surfaces so that they are dry. Do that each and every time, and you will minimize the amount of maintenance your sink needs to stay sparkling clean.
Now and again, you will still have to thoroughly clean and sanitize your kitchen sink, but the more diligent you are with the daily rinse and wipe-down, the less often you will need to bring out the baking soda and the vinegar.
One last tip is to make sure you do not leave certain foods or beverages in contact with your sink for too long. Coffee grounds and tea bags are particularly notorious for leaving deep, stubborn stains on sink surfaces. The sooner you get these out of your sink and rinse out any residue, the better.
With Regular Cleanings, Your Kitchen Sink Can Retain Its Spotless Shine For Years to Come
Once you get your dishes washed, dried, and put away, the last thing you probably feel like doing is scrubbing down the entire kitchen sink. But you know what? A clean kitchen sink is worth it. Keeping your kitchen sink sanitized means you and your family stay healthy. And by buffing up the polish on your sink now and again, you can bring it back to that same beautiful shine it had on the day when it was new.

Green Grooming: The Best Eco-Friendly Products For Men
When a 93-year-old broadcaster gets a rock star reception at Glastonbury you know there’s something in the water. That’s exactly what happened when David Attenborough made a surprise appearance on stage at the Eavis’ farm in June 2019. That something in the water? Unfortunately, it’s plastic. Happily, Britain’s favourite activist pensioner was there to celebrate the festival going plastic free. Sadly, it’s a drop in the ocean compared with the estimated truckload of the stuff that gets dumped into the sea every 60 seconds. Yes, we have a plastic problem.
It’s an ultra convenient substance with many uses, so it’s no wonder plastic is heavily used around personal care products. With hindsight, making disposable items out of a material that can take 400 years to degrade is a pretty dumb thing to do, and yet we’re still pumping it out. However, it’s not the only element of our daily ablutions that’s unsustainable. What’s even trickier to avoid than plastic? Palm oil. The rainforest destroyer is literally in everything we eat and dump on our hair and skin. It grows fast and has a very high yield so chemists love it, and it can be listed under a mind-boggling number of ingredients.
It’s easy to get down about the magnitude of the mess humankind is making of the world. But it’s even easier to change our habits.
Why should you use eco-friendly products?
We used to think “green” products were a bit of a flop compared with their chemically-infused counterparts, but now standards are so high we wonder what we ever saw in some of the polluting mega brands. Eco-friendly products tend to limit their impact on the environment in the following ways: the packaging can be fully recyclable, compostable or non-existent; the natural raw ingredients are sustainably sourced (meaning they are organically/bio-dynamically farmed and fairly traded); or they can be vegan (free from beeswax or other animal by-products), because animal agriculture is a major contributor to climate change.
Green products also won’t mess with your hormones or poison the wider environment with harmful chemicals (like parabens, PEGs, BHA, BHT, phthalates and reef killing oxybenzone) and they are certified (by the Soil Association, Natrue, Ecocert, RSPO, Rainforest Alliance or other recognised body).
Your New Eco-Friendly Grooming Regime
The most eco-friendly grooming regime is the one where you use up what you’ve got. Then, the next time you’re on the hunt for an item, make a better, informed choice: something that’s made closer to home, uses no plastic or is fully recyclable with ingredients that are responsibly sourced. Here’s a guide to some our favourites, including easy plastic-free swaps. Go on, Sir Dave would be proud.
Get a more natural dental routine
Floss? Silly single use tooth picks? Changeable brush heads? Dental hygiene is a plastic-filled minefield. Time to go back to basics on your dental brush. Bamboo is a fast-growing resource and will rot in your compost or council green waste (pull the bristles out with pliers when you’re done). Most dentists agree that technique is more important than the tool you use, so as long as you’re brushing adequately your gnashers won’t miss all the extraneous features that come with an electric one.
The Humble Co make regular and interdental brushes out of bamboo (so those D sticks can get the heave-ho too) and bamboo cotton buds – so your ear gunge won’t end up as an albatross’ lunch.
Swap paste for tabs
Mouthwash and paste in a tablet? Georganics and Lush both make dental tabs so you can move on from plastic tubes. The other benefit is carrying all you need for a trip away. Georganics paste comes in a jar with a bamboo spatula – and has plenty of five star reviews for the sceptical – and even make natural dental floss. Pure coconut oil is used for “pulling” (AKA teeth cleaning) and it’s 100% natural and anti-bacterial. Modern commercial toothpaste can also contain dodgy chemicals such as triclosan (increases antibiotic resistance in the environment) and BHT, so there’s another reason to make the switch.
Take the bar
We’re talking solid shampoo and cleansing bars. D R Harris’ Arlington shampoo bar holds the equivalent of a 300ml bottle of shampoo. All of the bars come in a thin plastic wrapping and are easy to store in the tin case they come with (which can be reused time and time again). They’re also made without palm oil, which frequently pops up in major shampoo brands. Elsewhere, Lush do a wide range of solid bars for all types of ablutions (including shampoos, cleansers, shower oil and even perfume) – and some of these can be cut to size like a block of cheese.
Don’t sweat it
Aerosol cans with plastic lids and twist-up roll-ons add to the ever growing plastic mountain. Sweat-proof yourself with Procoal’s vegan, charcoal based deodorant or Ben & Anna’s natural deo sticks that come in a push-up made entirely from cardboard. Somebody, please, tell the big brands it can be done.
Shave off waste
Try to buy better electrical devices for shaving, hair styling and body grooming and avoid cheap, badly made ones that won’t last. Along with toothbrushes, cotton buds and dental picks, single-use razors are a common sight on beach clean ups around the UK.
Metal safety razors and open razors can last forever with the right care and create barely any waste at all. Both can be a bit intimidating to use, however, so a metal or wooden handle with a changeable head will still limit the amount of plastic heading for the bin. Bulldog make a bamboo handle and even a bamboo razor stand – for anyone who actually uses one.
Using a hard shaving soap in a refillable wooden or ceramic bowl will also cut out the plastic container (these soaps tend to be chock full of palm oil, so it’s a trade-off – Murdock London’s contains organic, sustainable palm oil).
Bulk Up
The next time you’re getting your hair cut, ask if you can refill your shampoo bottle using the bulk supply. Davines, the Italian haircare brand, make it policy that their stockists should welcome and encourage clients to top up empty bottles at the barbers or salon.
Buying larger size products is also more economical. Online purchases account for a growing portion of CO2 emissions, and tend to be overpackaged, so maximise your order. And it’s usually cheaper per ml for a larger size. Bramley make shower gel in a one-litre size, which should take even the biggest clean freak a long time to get through.
Elsewhere, there are more refill options popping up where you can top up shampoo – independent health food stores and bigger chains like Whole Foods, Planet Organic and The Source Bulk Foods usually have a refill section for liquid shampoos and body cleansers.
Refills aren’t just for hair care, either: Le Labo offer refills at all its fragrance counters – with a 20% discount incentive to bring your bottle back.
Go organic and think local
The skin is the body’s largest organ and absorbs whatever you put on it. Overloading your skin with chemicals isn’t good for you long term and it’s even worse for the environment. Whatever goes down the bathroom plughole ends up in the ecosystem and eventually comes back to us through the tap or food chain.
Brands such as Weleda, Dr Hauschka, and Neal’s Yard have always been aware of this and use as much organic, traceable and fair trade raw ingredients as possible, some sourced directly from their own farms. Brands like ilā apothecary, Guy Morgan and Susanne Kaufmann generally have less of an impact due to a smaller scale, responsible operation. Independent brands can also be much more savvy about waste: east London-based MONTAMONTA repurpose used coffee grounds from local cafés for its Sage + Coffee body scrub.

16 Game-Changing Uses for Table Salt That Can Save Your Day Out of the Blue
New Post has been published on http://www.infolibrary.net/16-game-changing-uses-for-table-salt-that-can-save-your-day-out-of-the-blue/
16 Game-Changing Uses for Table Salt That Can Save Your Day Out of the Blue
Salt has been used for well over 6000 years, and we don’t expect it to go away any time soon. It’s used in a wide variety of situations and contexts, from cooking, to preserving all kinds of food, and to control & diminish fires. It’s one of the main reasons why we can transport food all over the world! And the best thing of all is that salt is crazy cheap almost everywhere, and its uses are virtually infinite!
Naturally, Bright Side has looked into some more wonderful and miraculous ways that salt can save your day from going overboard. Most of them are pretty easy to try out!
16. Bring back the natural color of old clothes
You tried everything you could think of to make those old clothes look new, or at the very least not so washed out, but nothing quite worked out. Try salt!
Just soak your clothes in a solution of salt water, and/or add a ¼ cup of salt into the wash cycle. You’ll surely be surprised at the results you’ll get.
15. Refresh and clean artificial flowers
This one’s pretty easy and surprising. No one likes dust in their artificial flowers, but dust is almost impossible to get rid of (at least permanently).
One easy-peasy way to keep your artificial flowers dust-free is to put some table salt into a bag (paper, preferably), add your artificial flora, and give it a shake. The salt will remove any traces of dirt and dust, and they’ll look wonderful again.
14. Get rid of lipstick marks
Those long-lasting and strong lipsticks can be a pain to wash off since they’re designed to resist water. You throw a beautiful and jaunty party, only to face lipstick on the glassware at the end.
Even after numerous dishwashing adventures, the lipstick won’t come off. Grrrr. What to do? Just gently scrub your glasses and glassware with salt (careful not to scratch them) before sending them to Washville. Trust us, the stains won’t be able to resist it!
13. Cheap and effective skin exfoliant
Salt can also be a great alternative to take care of dry skin. It removes dead skin, enhances your blood circulation, is an overall good way to improve your skin’s health, and it’s cheap!
It is especially effective if you apply it after one of those relaxing, hot baths. Remember: apply salt while your skin is still mildly wet, and massage it in a circular fashion. For better exfoliating results, use sea salt!
12. As a companion to toothpaste
Ever gotten yourself into a scenario where you don’t have toothpaste on hand? Just use salt!
Another pretty simple and handy hack is to actually add salt into your toothbrushing routine. It’s great to remove stains, to whiten your teeth, and even to disinfect them, because of the antibacterial properties of salt. Just don’t expect your teeth to whiten overnight, it takes some time and consistency to pull it off, but it’s well worth the wait.
Simply dip your wet toothbrush into table salt and brush your teeth gently. Alternatively, add a little bit of table salt on top of your toothpaste to make it smoother!
11. Test to see if your eggs are still good
Yes, eggs are the kind of thing that we tend to forget in the fridge. It’s not that we don’t know that they can go bad, it’s just we subconsciously think they’ll last longer than anything else.
If you find yourself in a situation where you don’t know if you should or can eat an egg, just do the salt-water test!
Just add cooking salt (2 tbsp should be enough) to a cup of water (or any other container, as long as it is large enough to hold the egg) and drop the egg inside. If it sinks, it’s good. If it floats, don’t eat it!
10. Pre-shampoo treatment for dandruff
Dandruff can tank your self-esteem if the problem is let loose. And you’ve probably tried a myriad of treatments and solutions for it and never quite got that satisfying payoff you were hoping for. But have you tried salt?
Before you splash shampoo on your hair, sprinkle some salt onto your scalp, massage it carefully and thoroughly for at least 5 minutes, then bring in the shampoo reinforcements. It does wonders for dandruff, and also helps your hair grow healthy, long, and strong!
9. Prevent ice formations
Ice can be a delicate problem during winter. Especially when you have to drop the kids off at school and then head to work, and your windshield is covered in ice the size of an iceberg!
Exaggerations aside, salt is a distinguished ally against ice, because it decreases the temperature at which ice freezes, working as an effective and cheap de-icer. Before heading to bed for the night, grab a small cloth, fill it with salt, and rub it across every inch of glass on your car. You’ll have an ice-free surprise in the morning!
8. Ease a sore throat
A solution of salt and water can do wonders for a sore throat. It loosens mucus, reduces swelling, and it expels bacteria and other irritants which can be the cause for your throat soreness.
Just add some table salt into a glass of water, and gargle it for between 30 seconds to a minute. You’ll be amazed at how strangely effective it is.
7. Remove watermarks from furniture
Another recurrent problem: those pesky marks on your furniture. The fact that most people forget that coasters exist, even after they’ve been provided with tons of ’em, is quite problematic if you’re throwing a party, or if you own a bar or pub. It can be a problem, and a hard one to get rid of conventionally.
A potentially easy way to get rid of ’em is to throw a little bit of salt directly onto the problem and scrub it gently with a sponge, preferably a wet one. You might just be able to get rid of that useless circle!
6. Make your toothbrush last longer
This is a surprising one, and a hack that’s both cheap and can help you save money. It’s pretty simple, really, just drench your new toothbrush in salted water for a while before using it, it will help it live a longer life! You can also spread salt all over the brush, and then submerge it in water.
5. Make your lips luscious and smoother
Salt’s not only good for exfoliating your skin, but also for your lips. Whenever you feel like your lips are dry, rough, and not-at-all luscious, just add salt!
A quick and easy way to do it is to add some table salt to a toothbrush and carefully brush your lips with it (again, circular motions have been proven to be the best). After you’re done, wash it off. Your lips will look splendid in no time!
4. Improve oral health by mixing it with water
Like we’ve already previously discussed, salt has great anti-bacterial properties, and can be a great and cheap way to maintain and improve your oral health without buying overly expensive products.
As with the sore-throat hack, you can gargle a solution of salt water for 30 to 60 seconds. It is a great way to relieve any injuries or sores that have befallen your throat, and it is especially effective at keeping your mouth fresh!
3. Get your fish tank sparkling again
Did your fish ever say, “I’m out” after living in a dirty tank for days and days on end? Fret not, this is another great and unconventional use for salt. Who would’ve thought you could use it to keep your fish tank sparkling, tidy, and free of mineral deposits from hard water?
Just rub the inside of your fish tank with salt, and rinse it afterward. But, and we cannot stress this enough, it is imperative that you thoroughly rinse your tank, and add a product to keep your water treated (such as Tapsafe) before putting your fish inside the tank again!
2. Unclog the pipes
If you have a clogged drain in your home that you’re desperate to unclog, but you have no drain cleaner on hand, just try salt! We’re serious, just drop a 1/2 cup of cooking salt into the nasty hotspot. Being naturally coarse and abrasive, salt will eat through the grease that’s inhabiting your clogged pipe.
1. Remove those impossible red wine stains
Perhaps the worst contender of them all: wine stains, particularly red wine stains. They can be some of the worst types of stains you can get on shirts, sweaters, carpets, and basically any kind of fabric that has had the unfortunate luck of having wine spilled on it.
This hack works best if applied while the wine stain is still fresh (right after the crime has been committed!). First, you need to dilute the stain by pouring water directly on it, and then cover it up with table salt. Leave it for about 10 to 15 minutes, and then scrub, and scrub, and scrub, until that troublesome stain is gone!
There’s still plenty unconventional uses for salt out there. If you know of some that we haven’t discussed here (or anywhere else), join in the discussion below, we’d love to discover more of them!

Travel Hygiene Tips: Staying Fresh on the Road
youtube
If you’ve ever stepped off a plane with stained and rumpled clothes, a pore-clogged face, a plane lag-induced headache, and a mouth that still tastes like hours-old airplane food, you know how tricky it can be to stay clean and rested while traveling. And that’s just the first leg of your trip-up. Where do you turn when access to basic facilities–like a shower and sink–becomes a distant memory?
Travel Hygiene Tips
If you’re properly prepared, you’ll be ready for whatever travel trial comes your route: to use an apple or lemon to improve your breath, to take a shower without water, or to fall asleep in even the most cramped, cacophonous of airline seats.
Enter the holy sextet of travelling freshness: hands, mouth, face, body, clothes … and mind. Whether you’re on a trek through the Amazon jungle or a bus tour through Germany, keeping fresh and clean on the road can improve your spirits, maintain health, and assure that fellow travelers and locals aren’t scared off by your haggard appearance and penetrating odor. Check out our traveling hygiene tips below.
Hands
Those travelers devoted to hand sanitization are religious about the act–and for good reason. As we report in Avoiding the Airplane Cold, you may be more than 100 days likelier to catch a cold while flying than you would on the ground, thanks mostly to low cabin humidity. One important style to protect yourself is by keeping your hands clean.
While physicians largely agree that washing hands with hot, soapy water is best for preventing the spread of germs, there are times when this simply isn’t an option for travelers. In these cases, your best bet is an alcohol-based sanitizer( in cloth or liquid form) such as Purell. Squirt and scratch before a restaurant dinner, after employing an ATM or after fondling a stone bust of Nefertiti at a souvenir shop.

Face
A clean face can do a lot to offset dirty hands and foul breath. When considering your face on the road, there are two things to keep in mind: the climate of your destination and your skin form. Leaving for Egypt’s desert sand? Pack plenty of lip salve and moisturizer. Hiking the rain forests in Costa Rica? Nature will help you out a little. But no matter where you’re traveling, sunblock is absolutely essential if you’ll be spending any time outdoors. Save room in your suitcase by packing a combination sunblock/ moisturizer or sunblock/ foundation.
Beyond staying hydrated, there’s the question of facial cleanliness. There are a bevy of waterless facial products that can be used on the road–say, while camping. Vichy offers a rinse-free facial cleanser and makeup remover; another option is facial-cleansing wipes from Aveeno. These separately wrapped cloths are are alcohol- and soap-free and don’t require any water.

Mouth
Is bad breath the greatest enemy to overall travelling freshness? Your fellow airplane passengers apparently think so. According to a Skyscanner poll of more than 1,000 people, the largest number( 19 percent) felt that” those with bad breath and BO” induced the worst seatmates.
So what to do to avoid that fouled, sticky savour in the mouth and that look of disgust from your neighbour on the plane or metro? Beyond the obvious mints or gum, and avoidance of garlic and kimchi( spicy pickled cabbage being the most popular variety ), there are a number of products that promote oral hygiene on the road. Colgate Wisps are disposable mini-toothbrushes that provide a quick and easy mouth-freshening option when you can’t brush your teeth for real. The brush head has a freshening bead that releases a mouth cleaning liquid when you scrub, and a pick on the opposite end provides a floss alternative. It requires no water to use, and the ingredients are safe to swallow( except for the brush itself, of course !).
Another product of choice is Listerine PocketMist, delivered to me as part of a hotel’s complimentary in-room toiletries. This is Binaca for the modern age–in a smaller key-chain-sized container and with a more potent punch. You can literally feel the bacteria being singed away.
There are also a number of foods that, rather than encouraging halitosis, assist clean out the mouth. Granny Smith apples are one such alternative, their tartness triggering the mouth’s natural rinse mechanism, salivation. Lemons and limes run great as well.
Clothes
If the cliche rings true –” look good, feel better “– then choosing the right clothes for the trip-up is a keystone of successful travel … as is keeping them clean and wrinkle-free.
In-transit, try a polyester “dry-fit” T-shirt–which is light-weight, wrinkle-free and exceedingly quick to dry–as your first layer. I like to pack a few, as they take up almost no room in my luggage. You can find them in athletic stores like Foot Locker and adventure travel outfits like REI, or online at Amazon( Hanes offers them for women and men .) Other wrinkle-free clothing, from button-downs to women’s pants, is readily available from travel goods retailers like Orvis.com and TravelSmith.com. And if you stain your wrinkle-free duds, try Tide to Go, which looks a bit like a magic marker but does a fairly decent undertaking of eliminating stains.
Don’t like the feel( or potential extra cost) of wrinkle-free garb? If you don’t have access to an iron, you might try Downy Wrinkle Releaser. The liquid product works by relaxing fabric fibers so that wrinkles can be smoothed out with your hand. Just spray on your crumpled top, stretch and smooth it out, and you’re done.
Along the same lines, one of the greatest fears for hikers and trekkers is getting wet, then getting cold, then getting sick. But even the casual traveler can benefit from a packable waterproofed jacket. Mine’s from Eastern Mountain Sports and it fits into its own pocket, constructing it easy to include in your carry-on. Here are a few options for women and men.
Related:Ridiculously Comfortable Travel Clothes That Don’t Sacrifice Style
Body
For the body, clothing can go a long way in at least giving the impression that you’re cool and dry. But when you’re in a water-free environment and desperate for a shower, there are a number of ” soap” products that can be used without water. The aptly named No Rinse Body Wash is a popular option for escapade travelers. Known in the health care field( for employ with bedridden patients) and also good for campers/ trekkers who don’t have the luxury of a shower, No Rinse products utilize a water-based odor neutralizer to provide a quick clean. Of course, the benefit here is that you don’t have to rinse.
I’ve also heard of some travelers employing a little of Dr. Bronner’s castile liquid soap, another favorite of backpackers, without water. It’s pretty exhilarating stuff, tingly all over. Don’t use too much though, as a little–around the neck, under the armpits–goes a long way.
Mind
Beyond bad breath and body odor, “freshness” is also a state of mind. Part of it is matching your expectations (” I want to stay clean, dry and awake “) with reality (” I’m on a three-day hike through the Rockies with no access to soap “). But remaining fresh and alert is about rest and relaxation, and one of the most admirable travel talents is the ability to fall asleep at will.
On the plane? Get a window seat so you have somewhere to lean, and try a neck pillow. Check out 8 Neck Pillows That Won’t Embarrass You on the Plane to see our reviews of eight neck pillows.
Besides medicinal products( watch our 9 Over-the-Counter Medicines You Should Pack for Every Trip or talk to your doctor ), I find drowning out the surround noise to be the most effect sleep aid. Noise-canceling headphones can replace the irritating low-level plane buzz with something more conducive to sleeping. But do your search on these before buying. If you’re going to invest the money–the popular Bose headphones will set you back 300 clams–make sure you get a fitting. The intent is defeated if the phones start pinching your ears or leave indentations in your temples after 20 minutes of wear.
Another method that’s often mentioned anecdotally( but probably isn’t doctor-recommended) is depriving yourself of sleep the night before your flight. The idea is that you’ll be so depleted, it won’t matter if you’re wrapped in a carpet and hung upside down–you’ll still be able to fall asleep.
For more ideas and tips-off, see Sleeping on Planes.
