both my ships got thOSE same line and this is beautiful
Amy x Laurie (little women 2019) and Five x Lila (TUA S4)
Amy & Lila: "Why"
Laurie & Five: "You know why" then proceed to break the girls's hearts, no explains, no excuses.
So now i realised why i love both ships immensly, kinda funny to get to know myself a little more through that simple conversation.
Turns out i valued 1)the understanding without needing any words, 2 minds in the same frequency and 2)the confidence in love that the other one have enough love to accept their wrong doings. lol, what's wrong with me

Laurie and Adaptive Attractiveness (Where is The Brown Skinned Laurie)
youtube
In Little Women, Louisa May Alcott wrote that Laurie has "curly black hair, black eyes and brown skin", but Laurie has never been played by a brown-skinned actor. In this episode you will also learn about Laurie's relationship with his grandfather and the loss of his parents. How Hollywood has actively erased major parts of Laurie's personality, such as his vanity and temper, things that also play major roles in his character arc, and why he moves on from Jo to Amy. Once again, this is something that is completely erased from Little Women films between 1933 and 2019.

Okay Little Women is one of those "childhood books you read and reread and love" for me. And hot take, Amy has always been one of my favorites and she gets a bad rap. And hotter take, even though Florence Pugh was way too old to play a convincing 12 year old, I really think the 2019 version was absolutely right not to cast a child (aka the 90s version of the film and Kirsten Dunst) in the role.
Because like. The novel spans a decade or so, counting both parts. And when it starts, Amy, while the youngest of the sisters… is 12. Jo is 15. Meg, the eldest, is 16. (Beth is 13.) Amy is the youngest, but not drastically. In the 90s version, Kirstin Dunst did a good job and all, but she's a child surrounded by adult actors. This makes Amy in turn seem even younger, and especially since Amy spends much of the second half of the book a) away from the rest of her family and b) marrying Laurie, having her be a literal child for half the film is… weird. Right? She's only 3 years younger than Jo. And yeah, there is a huge difference between a preteen and an older teen… but when you cast, as in the 94 version, an 11 year old and a 23 year old to play sisters three years apart, and, as the "childhood" part of the story only spans about a year of time before jumping 3 years to Meg's wedding (and then hanging out in Concord for another few years before Amy and Jo take off to pursue their careers/Art, which movies universally skip because they're pretty boring chapters of Meg Being A Newlywed and Look How Great Amy Is)… my point is, it's actually kind of nuts to insist that Amy and Amy alone gets a "child" actor and an "adult" actor, since she's supposed to be basically the same age as her siblings (only a year younger than Beth, who doesn't get a child actor!), and for most of the novel she's in her late teens anyway. The 2019 adaption did it right, fight me.

THIS.
theodore laurence did NOT visit amy march every day when she was at aunt march’s house to entertain her when she was sad and frightened for her sick sister and he did NOT instantly go see her again once beth was better even though he was exhausted and it was the middle of the night because he kept her promise of being there to tell her the instant beth recovered and he did NOT run after her in europe when she was driving a carriage because it was the first time he had seen her in years and he did NOT spend all that time in europe with her and he did NOT unknowingly picture her as his muse as he wrote his opera and he did NOT end up taking her “rousing” words seriously and using them to literally change his life after he hit rock bottom and he did NOT drop everything and travel across europe to be with her when her sister died even though he thought she despised him and he did NOT confess his love to her by T ENDERLY replying to her “How well we pull [the boat] together” with “So well that I wish we might always pull in the same boat. Will you, Amy?” and he did NOT refer to her as “my wife” every five seconds when they were finally married because he was, as he says “so proud of her” just for you crusty ugly bitches to say he only married her because he settled for her and he couldn’t have jo

Top 5 favorite Amy March fan fics!
Only 5!?
I really like the ones that offer a glimpse into their life while respecting the canon. Extra points for deepening a small scene or element in the book that deserves more exploration. And of course, AmyxLaurie cuteness.
They’re numbered but it’s not that strict. I really love them all.
1. It reminded me of you by lauraschiller
This one gets extra point for taking one of my favorite elements of Amy (and Laurie): faith. I found it absolutely lovely and telling that Laurie gave Amy an ebony cross after spending time with Estelle at Aunt March’s. And then she kept it for years! How dare people say that Amy and Laurie were not close?! Also, how does people just ignore the effect that faith had on Amy to become a better person?!
Anyway these are short but absolutely lovely scenes surrounding the ebony cross. Actually, lauraschiller has another story about John and Meg that is equally fantastic.
2. The art of parenthood by Beth Harker (Beth_Harker), Beth_Harker
This fic gives us a glimpse into Bess first year or so, when she was very ill and they didn’t know if she was going to survive. I can’t imagine what it was like to know how high child mortality was then and face the possibility of losing your baby. So this is very sad bit hopeful. And one of the greatest thing is to read how the situation made Laurie and Amy be more gentle and it brought them even closer, which does not always happen. Also, it features Amy painting!
(The author has other canon-compliant stories for them and other couples, so check them out.)
3. Spring breaks loose, but so does fear by lovelacegsl
This one is from my mutual and fellow Amy March defense squad member @lovelacegsl, and it was a lovely gift. And it’s a nice moment during their first years of marriage. It’s sweet, romantic and has steamy bits.
4. Not in so many words by therealchancewriter
The first chapter, especially, is very influenced in the 2019 featuring Amy's insecurities about being second to Jo. BUT! the rest is a heartbreaking, yet hopeful and loving story about Amy and Laurie's journey until they got Bess. It's amazing and it's super long. Each chapter is a little less than 10,000 words! (there aren’t really long stories in this tag) And it's steamy! The love scenes are very well written, they're tasteful and hot.
And! It has lovely JoxFritz moments. I love that the author shows how close the couples are and that there is absolutely no drama between them. They’re friends and they support each other.
TW for depression, post-partum depression, miscarriages.
5. Countryside Dream by valkyriex
This one is an AU but it’s absolutely beautiful. There’s not really many fics that give them a big family and this one gives them 5 children! It also has them living in Paris for a few years, which I loved. I know some people think that Amy should have remained a bit far because going back to Concord pulled her again to being “baby of the family” (she does goes back to sit on her mother’s lap the next day). So this is a nice compromise. And there’s a beautiful moment where her daughters discover her paintings.
Ok, there are my top 5, it wasn’t easy. There are many great stories, usually from the same authors, so I recommend checking their profiles.
Runner ups (but come on, I love them so much, all of them. And I read them constantly)
The other man by Tara R.A. Boomdiay
A lighthearted tiny shot of Amy and Laurie 20 years into their marriage. This is incredible, I love it so much
Visage through thine tears by Kamuela
Someone recommended this one to me, and Ican’t remember if it was you. But it’s another exploration of their difficulties having children.
Glory in the flower by frankie_bell
This would have been up there if it were finished. But alas, we haven’t had an update since 2020. So, if anyone wants, go ask for it, kindly.
I want your midnights (you and me forevermore) by reciprocityfic
This is the only modern AU that I have here by @reciprocityfic.
It’s a New Year’s fic so famous midnight kiss comes into play.
And, one of my favorite things: Jo totally shipping AmyxLaurie and basically putting them together and saying “kiss!” Like she basically did it in this fic.
Thank so much for the question, Niina!
Let me know if you read them.

So I read your post about how you got into fanfiction and it was very interesting! Do you write for any other fandom besides Harry Potter currently or just that?
Oh, I had missed this one.
I just write for the Harry Potter fandom. Partially because you can't control hyper-fixations and partially because most of the things I read aren't really fanfiction friendly if it makes sense (some of my favourite books aren't even novels). And the idea of writing fanfictions about tv shows weirds me out.
The only thing I could ever eventually write fanfiction for would maybe be AmyxLaurie from Little Women.

You know how in little women 2019 version, Greta used a golden color for the old days and blue one for the present BUT I just noticed how in many of Amy and Laurie’s scenes there are livid/happy colors like they were paintings and that blue color it’s often related to sadness and in this movie we see this color often used with present jo. It makes sense because in the old days, she was happy but in the present she was having a hard time. But Amy and Laurie weren’t? Like they were falling in love of course they weren’t sad lmao. And we finally see this blue tones with them it’s after Laurie’s leaves because you know, they fought, ergo they are sad. I don’t know if I’m clear but yeah, thank you Greta for portraying them in such magnificent way.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:
I RELATE TO AMY FREAKING MARCH SO MUCH AND I WOULD DIE FOR HER. SHE DOESN'T DESERVE THE HATE SHE GETS AND IT IS FACT THAT SHE BELONGS WITH LAURIE PERIODT
And I would not hear otherwise.

So you've already seen the new Little Women, right, and you liked it? Say, is this the adaption that manages to make me NOT ship Jo x Laurie in a romantic way, a feat not even the books managed? I always feel as if I'm failing LMA (and letting down the platonic m/f friendship side) for getting annoyed over Laurie x Amy every damn time. :)
Hi there!!
YES, I was fortunate enough to see a very early screening of it with the cast & Greta back in October, and I will say it again - it’s honestly the best film I’ve seen this year. Greta manages to find the core of the March sisters - their ambitions and anger and hope and love for each other and frustrations - and make them real and relevant and punk, and reminds us just how rarely women have been able to tell their own stories...and Florence Pugh you guys, FLORENCE PUGH, just give her her Oscar already.
But, okay, to answer your question...well, it’s complicated. And slightly spoilery so turn back NOW if you want to go into the film without knowing anything
(SERIOUSLY I AM GOING INTO DETAIL ABOUT THE JO/LAURIE and AMY/LAURIE RELATIONSHIPS IN THE NEW LITTLE WOMEN FILM)
Okay, so, the short answer is, yes and no.  Because yes, you’re going to ship Jo & Laurie (and not just because Saoirse and Timothee have such great chemistry together) - BUT!!!!!!!! Here’s the thing - and where Greta’s version is genius and brilliant and omg chef’s kiss - what this version ALSO shows is how Jo & Laurie really aren’t very good for each other, because they don’t - or aren’t capable - of forcing the other one to GROW.  Yes, their lives are enriched by being around each other and yes, they have this beautiful bond, but the film is pretty clear about how Jo can’t force Laurie to grow the fuck up and Laurie can’t force Jo to get out there and live her best life.
And the other genius thing about this version (and seriously, I love Greta SO much for this) is that the film shows all of the ways that Amy DOES force Laurie into being a better person and taking responsibility for himself and his actions (and Meg too - honestly, one of my favorite scenes of the film is between Meg & Laurie), and how Laurie helps Amy step out from behind Jo’s shadow and into the light as her own person.  The film spends time letting that relationship grow, and giving it space and time, so that when Amy & Laurie get together, it feels natural. (And also, Florence & Timothee do such a brilliant job - and also have great chemistry!) (Although, let’s be real, Timothee would have great chemistry with an actual rock :D)
But it also is very good about showing the messiness of the entire situation, and it’s handled beautifully.
So, honestly, I can’t say that you’re NOT going to ship Jo and Laurie - but I think you’ll find yourself understanding why they never would have worked, and why Amy and Laurie do. :DDD

About Jo March from Little Women
Wow. I didn’t see any of the movies so I’m head over heels for the upcoming adaptation. I’ve read Little Women again for like nth time, but first in the full version. I just couldn’t get enough time. So what’s my opinion? I mean everyone makes mistakes. Amy burning the manuscript? Or Laurie almost ruining Meg-Brook realtionship? They were too young to actually understand the situation and responsibility for it as a whole. So why am I so upset after reading the book?
1. Jo didn’t marry Laurie. Instead, she married Bhaer. Now what’s the problem? I mean the guy is almost the same age as her father, I know that some of you might not think of it as a great problem, but for me it was just too much. I mean Jo just could have stayed solo till the end just as how much she wanted. Also Laurie could have got some perserverence to wait for Jo, if he had waited like so many years to actually tell his feeings to Jo. I know that Laurie was uncomfortable with being turned down , but that doesn’t mean he can just go to Europe and get another girl...? For Jo, she could have just remained single. She just wanted to be friends with Bhaer, why couple them together? If she could stay in friendly terms with Laurie, why couldn’t it happen with Bhaer, who could have become a life mentor for her?
2. I don’t hate Amy. It’s true that Little Women is quite Jo-centered, but Amy wasn’t that hateful character to get all the badmouthing even after 120+ years. True she was a spoilt child, but she grew up well, she became a quite independent lady-like character who could even scold Laurie. Now comes my problem. After scolding Laurie, how did it just become love???? LMA could have just coupled them up with fine men and women who were unrelated to the March family. I just don’t understand why they were coupled. I know that they just had their own love story.... However, I didn’t see this Laurie character who would go for the sister if he couldn’t “get” Jo.... It seemed quite off for me. Also it mocked me how Mr. Lawrence reacted to the marriage of Laurie and Amy. I thought that he was in the JoxLaurie camp, then I felt betrayed. I felt so sad, seeing Amy and Laurie even considering to give out money for Jo and Bhaer. It was too cruel to pity Jo, just because they had more money. Even Laurie as a youngster didn’t do that. I was so mad at the second half of the second book.
It would have been nice if Jo and Laurie ended up together after 10+ years. I didn’t want Jo to reconsider Laurie right after turning him down. Hypothethically, If Jo could fall in love with Bhaer, why couldn’t she change her mind for Laurie? If she couldn’t reconsider, I would hve still supported her staying with her parents, but marrying Bhaer was just somehow too much, off limits....
I’m so sad that after reading the book I still have the movie break my heart again...

Even if the 2019 film is not perfect, I still think they did an excellent job with AmyxLaurie. Laurie looked totally smitten by Amy when he was talking with Jo. And, by the sound of it, it looks they had a pretty good trip back, if you know what I mean.
Hi, anon!
About AmyxLaurie in that film... I think if Gerwig had stuck with the original scenes for them, it would have worked much better. I talked about this here (x) and here (x).
The book never explicitly says that Amy had a crush on Laurie from the very beginning. But many adaptations had interpreted it as such, especially the 2018 modern adaptation and the 2019 film. I have no problem going through that route. Unrequited-to-requited love is always entertaining to watch. And I think it's something that can happen to any woman. An independent, smart woman like Amy can fall for an idiot. It happens all the time. (So many people reading this are nodding right now)
I would even accept the changes that Gerwig did, like altering the carriage scene so that Amy jumps to hug him. Then, Laurie standing her up and not apologizing in the studio is also part of this story. It shows how vulnerable Amy is when her feelings get in the way. She's telling Laurie that people can choose who to love, but she herself couldn't and Laurie is taking advantage of it whether he knows it or not. It's all part of the narrative that will climax in the garden scene.
That's why the garden scene is so powerful. That's Amy's wake-up call. At that moment she finally realizes how little Laurie respects her and how much he takes her for granted. And that he knows about her feelings! She's basically saying, “I love you but I'm not gonna let you do whatever you want with me.” Few people have that strength and willingness to walk away.
But it all means nothing when in the next scene Amy rejects Fred and goes running to find Laurie. I believe she rejected Fred because she didn't love him, and marrying him would be the same as what Laurie tried to do with her. What I don't understand is why is she so excited to see Laurie. And then she sort of implies that she wants to accept him now? Why? What happened in between? It doesn't make any sense!!!
Seems like there’s a missing scene there, maybe one where Laurie tells her he’s going to work with his grandfather? Or something that shows her (and us) that he genuinely loves her and is totally over Jo.
And then they reunite and they just kiss? And she's fine with it? How does that prove he's over Jo? In the book, they don't even have to say I love you, cause it's crystal clear. There are no doubts between them, they're in sync, and it's beautiful. But here, they needed a long serious conversation before that kiss. In the original script, Laurie has a whole speech and he tells her he loves her.
But in the final movie, there’s nothing that reassures the audience of Laurie’s feelings. And it only worsen when Jo “reconsiders” Laurie’s proposal. Jo is angry at Amy and mourns the loss of her “childhood love” (that’s how it is in the script! WTF! Wasn’t Jo a lesbian in this film?!)
Oh, and the “my lord” thing. Timothee made it sound more sexual than it really is. In the book, these two are living their own medieval fantasy where they are my lady and my lord, and their baby is the princess. Look, is the sex good? Hell yes! Remember, Amy has to be great or nothing. But “my lord” is not related to that.
