A female character can do bad things and be flawed and be annoying and say things she shouldn’t and get angry and be slutty and be loud and be unlikeable and do unhinged things and take up space all while being a good character to the story. I hate seeing women who are overly perfect on screen.

This also extends to real life when we talk about how women are inherently kinder, mature, emotionally stable, detail oriented, better at communicating, and natural care takers. No the fuck we’re not!! We are fucking human beings too who make mistakes and we hate to admit when we do, get angry with others and ourselves for the wrong reasons, ignore or ghost people instead of having that hard convo, use people to get what we want, etc. I’m not inherently good because I have a uterus. That’s gender essentialist bullshit!! It just causes women and girls to be put on this moral pedestal and when they make a mistake we can tear them down. But when a man makes a mistake “he’s still learning” and still gets more chances to prove himself. This is all in the way we socialize girls vs. boys!!

it kind of bothers me how no one in the sonic fandom seems to want to talk about amy's hidden depths. she's not just the "mom friend" or "girlboss" or "therapist friend" or "stalker" or any other boxes you try to fit her into. she has immense love in her heart for her friends and for the world. nothing is known about her backstory but its implied she has abandonment issues across multiple adaptations. she's willing to help others even at the cost of her own wellbeing. she never thinks about how what she's doing might affect her. like we know NOTHING about her life before she met sonic but she must have been really lonely if she has abandonment issues. just because her problems aren't in your face doesn't mean they aren't there. she is more than just the genki girl of the team, she too has her depth that i wish the writers would explore.

This was an interesting one for me. I picked it because it was available on KU as dual e-book and audio, so I could listen while I went about my day. I didn't mean to finish it in one day alone, but it sucked me right in.

I'm in two minds about it. If you'd asked me in the first 75% what I thought of it, I would have said it was great and recommended it, but the train quickly derailed for me. I still enjoyed it and I liked the story, but we all know I'm not capable of reading for just 'vibes' and there were a couple of plot twists that I felt came out of nowhere, for no reason, and weren't executed very well at all (their mother, Juniper's father, what really happened ten years ago). None of this really added to the story, in my opinion and the execution fell flat.

Still, there were a lot of gems in there for me. Having experienced a very similar injury in real life, one super common in ballerinas (three surgeries, constant pain, having to learn to walk on it again), I could relate a lot to everything Allie went through, and obviously the depression too.

Each time the pressure drove me to the surface for oxygen, it not only reminded me that my lung capacity was shit after going months without training, but also drove home the inescapable truth that I still wanted to live. Thirty-seven. For a couple of terrifying months, I hadn’t been entirely sure.

Fatigue won. Seems like it always does.

Sleep had become my greatest friend, and maybe, if I was being honest, a coping mechanism that was quickly turning into addiction. In unconsciousness, there were no ankle injuries, no rehabs, no decisions to be made about how hard to push myself and when. There were endless possibilities and zero consequences.

Speaking of Allie—and Hudson—I really liked them, their relationship was sweet and Hudson was obviously an (almost) perfect man (he went back for the dog!!).

"I told you I want you. I’m done hiding from it. Public. Private. Don’t care. This is real for me. It’s about to get messy."

“It’s already real. What do you need to feel safe?”

And Allie herself was a lovely, well-rounded character in general, I really liked her.

“You deserve someone who thinks you’re the world.”

However...

(There's always a however with me)

They very much felt to me like Xaden Riorson and Violet Sorrengail in a different font. Maybe it's just because I'm so entrenched in this fandom, maybe not, it's hard to tell being that it's my first contemporary of hers, but it felt like Rebecca has a type and that's cookie cutter versions of the same person, and also the same problems, same arguments, same conversations, even down to some lines.

I had a good chuckle at some of this:

“I want all of you. No masks. No walls. No more pretending what’s between us is fake when we both know it’s excruciating, and terrifying, and amazingly real. I want more than five minutes.” Panic shot into my blood like ice, but it quickly melted in the overwhelming heat coursing through me. “That’s not going to happen.” I’d never be foolish enough to let him in all the way again, not when he had a track record of leaving. “It is.” The certainty in his gaze didn’t stop me from lifting my hand to my other shoulder. “And I wish I was above using sex as a way to get you, to keep you. But I’m not.”

Oh God. If he stopped, I’d die. I’d simply combust right here and cease to exist.

“There’s no one else.” His lips ghosted across my stomach and his hands slipped under my shins. “Never was. Not for either of us.”

Hudson never lies to Allie...except by omission, in a big way. I had a little laugh at that. I also didn't really like Allie's sisters at all, or Hudson's, they're kind of terrible to them. I liked her best friend though: Rhiannon Kenna, and his brother Garrick Gavin, LOL.

All in all, I would recommend it, it was a good book, I'm just put off by the twists in the final 25% because I thought it was all going to tie together in a neat little bow, and it was anything but neat. A very strange ending and I'm left wondering why any of the book even happened. I don't know, those are my thoughts fresh off the final page 🤷‍♀️
