Edgar pondered that in silence, teeth nibbling thoughtfully on his bottom lip. That had always been a problem of his, accidentally idealising people. He tried not to, it didn’t take a genius to know it was unhealthy, but Amos managed to slip through the cracks. The wizard had become Edgar’s ideal of ‘good’-everything the younger man thought he should strive to be. It wasn’t fair, not to Amos and not to himself. “I’m sorry.” His reply came quietly, softly breaking the stillness. Uncharacteristically, the words were drenched in emotion, almost as though a broken sob would follow. Edgar rarely let his emotions out in a normal manner, preferring to use art and poetry to cleanse himself of hurt, but something about Amos brought out this different side of him. “You don’t deserve that.” He had enough to worry about without Edgar putting him on a pedestal. “I just ... it’s ... I admire you a lot.” The words poured from his mouth awkwardly, jumbled and nearly nonsensical. His cheeks flushed brightly, the redness spreading down his neck. “I’m sorry.”

I don’t know what to do anymore. How have I made so many mistakes? I adore Alice but I fear she will leave me. How do I show her my affections when I feel unworthy of even looking at her? I know we aren’t close yet but I would do anything for her and I know how much she adores you. I thought you would know how to handle this. I can’t lose her.

“So, you need to use some imagination, and we’ll be getting another bed and a few more toys, but the boys seem to like it!” Molly beamed, leading Amos across the threshold into the children’s room; the curtains were drawn back from the wide bay windows, and sun beams threw dappled light over the stone floor.

Like all the other rooms Molly, Greta, and Hestia had cleaned and furnished, the playroom’s contents were all mis-matched, with different woods, upholstery, bedding, and styles; but Molly had taken great pains to make sure the combination nursery/playroom was cozy, and welcoming: a place of refuge. After all, if the boys had to be uprooted, their temporary home had to be a place they wanted to be.

Crossing the room-- one of the largest in the castle-- Molly gestured to a modified crib. “It took some fiddling, but we found a set of cribs and put them together. For the younger ones, you know. The railings will keep anyone from wandering off. This one is Fred’s, and this one next to it is Georgie’s--if they aren’t next to each other, they’ll cry-- and I was thinking this one could be Ced’s!” Instinctively, Molly bent down and smoothed out the crib’s spread, a bright gingham quilt that, to Molly, seemed like just the thing Amos would wrap his little boy in back home. “So,” she straightened up, offering Amos a winning smile, “what do you think?”

Four Headcanons about Amos and Gideon

1. Gideon didn’t know Amos well in school, but he was familiar with the hordes of younger students in Hufflepuff who seemed to follow him around like a deity. He’d always found the trait to be somewhat indicative of the cult of personality that Amos continued to cultivate well into adulthood - the man was simply likeable, regardless of how you sliced it. By and large, Gideon always assumed that he could tell a lot about the kind of person someone was by the opinion they held of Amos Diggory; if it was positive, they were probably a good egg. If it was negative, he became immediately suspicious.

2. Gideon enjoys having Amos around the Prewett clan for many reasons, not least of which is getting Molly to dote on and ask about someone else for a change. While he’s incredibly thankful for the depth of concern that his eldest sister has for her baby brothers, it’s incredibly nice once in a while to see her lay her affections and worries onto the younger man’s head.

3. Gideon used Cedric, and by extension Amos, as a reason for committing his wand to Aversio in the more recent past. Though conflicted about the group’s aims, the young boy’s presence in his life and his father’s dedication to keep him safe made Gideon want to do everything possible to push for a quicker resolution to the war. The irony that the actions of the group continue to become more rash and reckless, thereby endangering innocents like Cedric, is not lost on the man and forces him to actively question his choices.

4. Gideon often wonders how he’d respond to the pressures in Amos’ life if the roles were reversed. While he can’t help but envision a day where he’d be able to have a family and live in a less turbulent world, the thought of raising a son in this environment terrified him. As such, Amos’ presence around the Prewetts acts as both a reminder of his aspirations and his fears, somewhat muting Gideon’s rambunctious nature around the other man.

1. Besides Davina, whom Millicent doesn’t get to see often, Amos is the closest thing Millicent has to a best friend. Scared of the war taking people she loves from her, she’s become somewhat of a recluse. She puts all her energy into her work in the hopes that those she loves stay safe. Amos is one of the only people who is able to pull her away from work.

2. Millicent considers Amos to be a far better person than she is. He selflessly stepped into the role of fatherhood, and she has always admired him endlessly for that.

3. Amos is the first person Millicent goes to when she needs to talk or rant. She knows he’ll be sympathetic, and she may even catch a glimpse of Cedric, who always makes her day better.

4. Whenever Amos brings Cedric to work, Millicent insists on having them stop by her office. Cedric gets to sit at her desk while she dotes over him. It never thrills Amos, but she’ll also give Cedric loads of sweets whenever he visits.

1.) Xeno heard about Amos at school before ever meeting him, and found through the grapevine that he was the man to see about magical creatures. From that day on, Xeno made a habit of approaching the other randomly without so much as a greeting or introduction, posing inquires about animals that he was trying to befriend/raise/learn about, and then scurrying off just as fast. 2.) Amos’ clean attractiveness inspired Xeno, for the first time in his life, to consider chopping his blonde locks. He never ended up going through with it, but he must’ve spent a solid hour total in front of his mirror, thinking of the tall blonde he’d seen in the corridors between classes that day, inspired and heavily considering the change. 3.) Xeno is uncertain how he feels about Amos now. He distrusts those in the ministry and the order, but can’t help the gut feel that he is a good man. 4.) Xeno finds it fascinating that Amos has a child already at (what he views as) such a young age, and is super appreciative of the bravery that it takes to create and raise a new life in such troubled times. He respects Amos for that.
