There’s little Vissenta can remember; that she remembers to wake, to move, to be what she thinks is a human being with most of their faculties intact, is a miracle in and of itself. 

Crafting a reasonable morning routine? Well, that’s completely unknown.

None of the little pinpricks in the fractured void of her mind, those brilliant needle-sharp bone-shard fragments that stab and startle her every time they pierce through, have offered up anything useful. No, useful is the wrong word; normal, is what she’s desperately searching for, every time she opens her eyes to the muzzy gray light of dawn, up and moving before any of her traveling companions.

—they would be so easy to kill, even Astarion, now that she knows that all it takes is a stake, all she’d have to do is take a knife, and another, and another, and—

She can’t completely quell the voice that whispers in the back of her mind, but she can calm it by tending to the steel she’s plucked from every body on the road. Vissenta whets her daggers beneath her shabby excuse for a tent, breathing in with each stroke, then back out again, drinking in the verdant air. No memory of wilderness, not at all, not like this - crisp, green, teeming with life (ripe for slaughter) - and she wants to pretend, for a moment, that she’s always been part of it.

A huntress, that’s all. A huntress sharpening her daggers, because there’s no use at all for a dull knife.

But with every pass of steel to stone, her head also thrums, a faint, pulsing agony, roiling her gut as she perfectly - exquisitely - pictures the cruel, slow twist of a blunt-edged blade. The way it rends, the way it pulls the flesh along when it finally catches hold. The way it skips and scrapes, the way its removal is a source of even more pain than its slow, wriggling insertion.

She remembers: a dull blade does have use, if there’s questions that need answers.

But she isn’t sure she even wants those answers.

Vissenta puts down the daggers before she can whet them down to even more useless slivers, then turns her attention to more mundane matters of the head; her hair’s still down, long, too long, long enough for someone to take hold of it in their fist and drag her—

—cruel fingers winding through her braid, hand and hair alike soaked in blood, her cries of pain strangled on a sickening wet bubble in her throat that refuses to burst, and another long plait swings in her vision, as bone-white as hers is coffin-dark—

—but she won’t cut it. Her hair has always been a point of pride; she knows this, somehow, even if she doesn’t know the rest, even though she knows it could be her undoing. Still, there’s a solution.

This is what people do, Vissenta tells herself, as she weaves together a plaited crown, starting just behind her ear, careful to avoid the ridges along her scalp that she discovered on the first night she scrubbed intellect devourer viscera from her skin and watched it float away downriver. They wake up. They tend to themselves. They—

—plan all you want, wretched thing, but you never could have planned for this, could you—

—face the day. And she won’t face it alone; she hears the crackle of the campfire’s embers as they’re stoked back to roaring life, and already her belly grumbles in anticipation of whatever magic Gale’s done - and she almost smiles at her own little joke, there - to turn their provisions into a hearty breakfast. As Vissenta pins and tucks the braid in place - lock-tight, no grabbing, no pulling, no swinging behind her as steady as a pendulum to count down the seconds before another untimely end - she sees the flash of silver out of the corner of her eye, as Lae’zel fixes her armor in place, as Shadowheart walks a wide circle to avoid the githyanki, as they all ready themselves for the day, just as she does.

There is no past; she can tell herself that for now, at least. The now keeps her alive, and keeps her blades sharp, and keeps her hair pinned, and keeps the voice—

—easy, so easy, cut them all and run—

Quiet.

Vissenta stands, and sheaths her daggers, and tucks back the loose strands of hair by her ears with shaking hands, and strides out to the sharp unknown of now.

This much, she’ll remember.

Sol Fertilis: Pleasure Venue Hierarchy

Prelude

These are the seven tiers of a Pleasure Venue’s hierarchy. In the past, during the Great Economic Collapse, there was a high prostitution rate and it went unregulated, leading to human trafficking, underage prostitution, and a high death rate due to murder and STDs. So a traveling rich woman named Takimura Kiwako decided to create a brothel to prevent further chaos. Her brothel grew bigger as more women joined and got sophisticated. This led to the attention of several Founding Fathers who attended this. Kiwako took this as an opportunity to get prostitution to be regulated as she had made good money on it. Afterward, she told them about how to please a woman and what “equipment” they could use. Once the PNP got elected, more brothels have been established, many being state-sponsored. When the rank laws were created, many unmarried Gamma Minus women were put into them due to their beauty. There were even orphan girls who were put into them as servants. 

Over the years, the lives of sex workers have begun to improve. There is a decrease in STDs, a low death rate, and an improved quality of life. However, there are still human rights concerns, as some of them were put into the Pleasure Venues as punishment for being connected to enemy troops or trying to escape during the war. 

The Ministry of Pleasure managed the hierarchy with their outposts. The higher the tier, the more privileges the sex worker got. The sex workers can even be removed and would have to work in a different field, such as maids or cooks, losing the opportunities they could have if they lost their “sexual energy”. 

Hierarchy

Magistra- They are the Madame of the Pleasure Venue, one of the highest-ranking Gamma Minus titles. Many are proud of this because the title represents their survival. The Magistra is allowed to manage the prostitutes and would get a good pension once they retire. 

Courtesan- These are the flagships of their Pleasure Venues. There would be several in each to avoid conflict and never be one. They are deemed to be the most prized women because they are gorgeous, have a high education, are artistic, and wear luxury Sol Fertilian clothes. They have a high bidding price to spend the night with them, with the starting price being 5000 Novas (3750 USD). 

Concubina- These are the Courtesans quasi-married to widowed or unmarried Alphas who already had one child called Concubinatus. Among the previous requirements, they also had to be fertile. What is unique is that they have a right to reject the offer if they deem the Alpha to be unfit. Once in the Concubinatus, they are given a surname that shows the Alpha’s ownership. Along with that, they are given their private room, the Mauve Harem, and a personal servant who was their Antepuella. 

Pretiosae- They are the prized ones who have brought value to the Pleasure Venue. Similar to the red-light district in Amsterdam, they would be seen in a showcase under violet lighting. They are also highly educated but not as much as the Courtesans/Concubinas. They are educated in singing, dancing, massages, and the fine arts, but not allowed to learn about stories of myth and more reserved arts. They had to wear theme clothing like some in the hierarchy. They have an average price of 1000 Novas (750 USD). 

Prostibula- They are the standard sex workers. They are not seen by the client beforehand, usually waiting in the session room. They primarily wear clothes that go with the theme of the Pleasure Venue and would have slightly higher education than their lower counterparts. A client is allowed to pay from several Prostibulas at once for sex parties or orgies. They have an average price of 500 Novas (375 USD).

Jocus- They are the ones who are trained to please a client’s fetish, objectified to where they are used as human furniture, gimps, Nyotaimori, and put in bondage shows. They never spoke and had to wear very revealing clothing, sometimes in either latex or leather. They have an average price of 250 Novas (187.5 USD).

Saltatrix- This is where the Sol Fertilian sex workers had to start as the lowest prostitute or adult entertainer. In Pleasure Halls, they work as waitresses, strippers, burlesque performers, and erotic dancers. In the Pleasure Gardens, they become porn actors and subjects of pornographic magazines. Like the Prostibula, Pretiosae, and Courtesans, they primarily wear clothes that go with the theme of the Pleasure Venue. They do not have sex with clients as they have to train to handle sex. For private events, they have an average price of 100 Novas (75 USD).

Antepuella- They are the “front girls, meaning that they serve the Courtesans, escort the clients to them, and stay in front of the door to wait until the client leaves or when the Courtesans need help. They are rarely, if ever, seen by the clients. When they come of age, they’d go one step higher, educated for more than the basics for a Gamma Minus. 

Other positions

Meretricius- A male prostitute that caters to both men and women

Aurorius- Male Beta Minuses that have sex with the Saltatrix, Jocus, and Prostibula for pornography and sex shows.

Sociusmerces- This is a paid Gamma Minus companion that does not require sex. They are similar to sugar babies.

i was thinking about going to amsterdam to see them with my friend and it’s like 750€ for the both of us. it’s insane to me that the tickets are so expensive for concerts when they once were like 15€. plus all that additional stuff you could get if you would sell your kidney and first born for them. i love them but these prices are just painful to see :/

Non solo oro: ecco i metalli preziosi che hanno fatto (e che faranno) cambiare la storia. Oro e argento, noti da sempre, e poi i «nuovi» platino, palladio, rodio, osmio, iridio e rutenio Si definiscono preziosi perché costano molto e sono rari. Come i quadri e gli oggetti d’arte, i pesci degli acquari, le auto che partecipano alle gare, gli abiti di alta moda e gli ananas viaggiano solo in aereo. I venditori, infatti, vogliono incassare il più rapidamente possibile l’ammontare della vendita e spediscono i metalli preziosi in aereo per essere pagati il giorno stesso della consegna. Si tratta di otto metalli: oro, argento, platino, palladio, rodio, osmio, iridio e rutenio. L’oro e l’argento hanno partecipato a fare e disfare la storia dell’umanità da millenni (l’oro da 40.000 anni, l’argento da 6.000), gli altri sei, invece, sono stati scoperti all’inizio del XIX secolo e partecipano a plasmare la storia tecnologica dell’umanità. Sono tutti pesanti e pesati in once troy (31,10 grammi) da non confondere con le once avoirdupoids del sistema non-metrico anglo-americano (che pesano 28,35 grammi). L’oncia troy prende il nome dalla città di Troyes, nella Champagne francese, la regione in cui nel Medioevo si tenevano le sei fiere annuali dove i mercanti del nord Europa incontravano i mercanti del sud (soprattutto gli italiani) e scambiavano merci e denaro.

I mercanti italiani commerciavano varie merci con metalli preziosi, spezie e prodotti destinati alla profumeria pesati in once che divennero una misura accettata da tutti e passarono nella storia con il nome di once troy. L’oro e l’argento sono metalli «duttili», quindi un gioiello di puro metallo non potrebbe essere indossato: ecco perché un gioiello d’oro contiene 750 parti di metallo puro, e il resto è composto da altri metalli come argento, rame, nickel, ferro, zinco, stagno, manganese, cadmio o titanio. Nel caso dell’argento, la purezza è di 925/1000 (92,5%) e gli altri due metalli che compongono la lega sono il nickel e lo zinco. La stessa informazione si può “tradurre” in carati: nell’oro a 18 carati, ci sono 18 parti d’oro (che corrispondono al 75%) e 6 di nickel e zinco, soprattutto. Il termine carato proviene dall’arabo qirat, ossia grano di carrubo: in passato si riteneva che i semi di questa pianta avessero tutti lo stesso peso e divenne così una misura accettata da tutti i mercanti per pesare piccole quantità di merci preziose. Il termine è poi entrato nel linguaggio dell’economia, si parla per esempio di «caratura» per indicare le parti in cui è suddivisa la proprietà di una nave. Per le transazioni si utilizzano barre da 400 once per l’oro e l’argento, e lingotti da un chilo per tutti i preziosi, nel caso dei metalli più rari le transazioni sono realizzate su una base di 5-10 chili. Le negoziazioni di vari metalli preziosi sono realizzate fra le due controparti in via privata (over the counter) con il pagamento al momento della consegna, ma per l’oro, l’argento, il platino e il palladio è possibile negoziare dei contratti «futuri» per consegna a termine ed esiste anche il mercato delle opzioni. Questi strumenti finanziari sono largamente utilizzati sia dalle imprese minerarie che fissano il prezzo dei metalli che saranno estratti nei mesi successivi sia dai consumatori che conoscono il loro fabbisogno mensile e possono fissare il prezzo del metallo per i mesi successivi. È interessante segnalare che tutti questi metalli preziosi sono stoccati in luoghi molto precisi e altamente protetti. L’oro, l’argento, il platino, il palladio e il rodio sono sovente stoccati nei caveaux delle banche di Londra, Zurigo, Hong Kong, New York e le circa 37.000 tonnellate d’oro di proprietà delle Banche Centrali sono stoccate nei loro forzieri. Gli altri metalli, in pratica i platinoidi, sono anche stoccati nei grandi depositi dell’Aeroporto di Schipol (Amsterdam), di Singapore e di Hong Kong, cui di recente si sono aggiunti i depositi dell’aeroporto di Shanghai, ormai una grande piattaforma dell’Asia. I principali metalli preziosi sono estratti nelle miniere ma possono anche essere ricavati anche dai fiumi che trasportano pagliuzze e piccole pepite, come racconta il mito di Giasone e del vello d’oro. Nel passato i cercatori d’oro tendevano pelli di ovini nel letto del fiume per raccogliere queste pagliuzze brillanti, poi le mettevano ad asciugare al sole, infine le bruciavano per raccogliere l’oro. E la Colchide, regione dove si recò Giasone, è ancora oggi un importante bacino aurifero attivo. Mentre si estrae oro in varie regioni del mondo, con una concentrazione in Cina, Africa del Sud, Russia, Canada e USA, Australia, Messico, Perù, esistono poche miniere di argento e il metallo è soprattutto ottenuto come sottoprodotto delle miniere di rame, stagno, zinco localizzate nelle Ande, nelle Montagne Rocciose, in Cina, Russia e Australia. Plutone è stato molto parco nella distribuzione dei platinoidi sulla crosta terrestre, certo non imparziale. Questi metalli si trovano essenzialmente nelle miniere e nei fiumi localizzati in Sudafrica, negli Urali e in Siberia, con alcune presenze nelle Montagne Rocciose e in Australia. In Sudafrica, in una regione di origine vulcanica chiamata Rustemburg Ring, sono concentrate numerose miniere da cui si estraggono oro e platinoidi: pare che la caduta di un meteorite abbia creato una catena montuosa in cui sono contenuti molti platinoidi, perché i meteoriti contengono ferro e nickel e sono in effetti ricche in platinoidi.
