Dragon Injury Reference
[More like speculation than ‘reference,’ but i did research for this. I always recommend doing your own research, too]
WINGS [Specifically webbed/bat wings] - Wings are FULL of blood vessels, and will probably bleed a surprising amount if cut or punctured. These sorts of injuries heal can without much treatment, even if a large amount of the wing membrane is missing - Fractures of the wing should be splinted, and put into a wing wrap/sling - A dragon missing a wing wouldn’t be able to fly again, except with an extremely advanced prosthetic. Lots of small movements. Also having to get used to the weight difference -An aesthetic prosthetic could still be used to combat lopsided-ness, but would be bigger and more unwieldy than other sorts of prosthetics
MISSING LIMBS - A three-legged dragon would be able to walk and run normally, once they get used to the shifted centre of mass and balancing on only three legs - Arthritis IS more common because of the extra pressure on the remaining joints. Would be worse for heavier dragons - Wings could probably be used to balance/support body, if they’re large enough to touch the ground - Missing just the tip of the tail probably wouldn’t affect much, but larger portions WOULD as that’s a lot of body mass to suddenly lose - Tails also help with balance when running and steering when flying, so a dragon might trouble getting used to the difference
HORNS - Horns are have a core of bone covered with a sheath of keratin, and never shed. They are difference from antlers, which are pure bone and do shed. - The tip of a horn is solid keratin, and will not bleed. Could be sanded or filed down for aesthetic purposes, but otherwise not a big concern - Closer to the base WILL bleed, and should be treated accordingly. - Horns will regrow over several months or a year, but closer to the base they may not regrow at all. Deformation upon regrowing is also common
MISC - Some reptiles can get Metabolic Bone Disease [MBD] from lack of sunlight/uvb.  This causes the bones to weaken, which increases the likelihood of fractures and can make the legs/tail/spine crooked, among other things. In WoF specifically, I head-canon Rainwings, Leafwings, and Sandwings are susceptible to this. - Scales over a healed injury may be smaller and irregular. Also takes a little bit for the scales to grow back in the first place - running out of juice for this but. something something infection of whatever organ produces fire/breath weapon. Think that’d be neat.

We need to give winged whumpees more love. Consider:
As hurt, we've got...
Sick Whumpee struggles to sleep because their wings make lying down tricky. This makes them extra miserable when they're already sick, tired, and desperately need to sleep but just can't get comfortable.
When Whumpee gets badly injured on the field, it takes the whole team to pin them down so they don't thrash around and make it worse while Caretaker tries to treat them. They've got people holding their legs, arms, and wings, and as much as Whumpee screams and writhes in pain, they don't let go. While they try to pull their wing from their teammate's grip, Whumpee accidentally dislocates it.
Whumper restrains Whumpee and rips their feathers out, one by one... Or all at once, if they are so inclined.
Whumpee gets caught in some kind of trap that covers their wings in gunk, effectively pinning them to the ground as they desperately try to escape from Whumper.
Sick with a horrible fever, Whumpee feels freezing cold no matter how much they're actually burning up. They keep trying to wrap their wings around themself for warmth, but Caretaker keeps stopping them by spreading their wings out. Whumpee groans as they try to pull their wings back. Caretaker whispers an apology, but they still can't let Whumpee risk making their fever worse.
Whumpee gets knocked out in midair, plummeting to the ground completely helpless. Or slamming into every tree branch, rooftop, or clothes line on the way down.
And as comfort, there's...
Caretaker gives Whumpee a warm bath and massages the dried blood out of their feathers. By the time they're done, Whumpee is fast asleep.
Caretaker repositions the pillows and blankets on Whumpee's bed into a sort of nest, trying to help Whumpee get as comfortable as they can. Afterwards, they bundle Whumpee in a blanket, wrapping Whumpee in their own wings first to make the blanket fit around them better and provide some extra warmth.
After Whumpee gets badly injured, Caretaker bandages up their wings, trying to soothe them whenever they cry out from the pain. Unable to fly, Whumpee gets increasingly impatient with themself over the following days. Caretaker notices their frustration and gently encourages them to take it easy and let their wings rest.
Whumpee uses their wings as a blanket for both themself and Caretaker as they snuggle together on the couch.
When Whumpee can barely walk due to their injuries, the weight of their wings only adds to the struggle. Though they encourage Whumpee to stay in bed and rest as much as possible, Caretaker is happy to wrap their arm around Whumpee's waist and help them around the house. Whumpee rests a wing on Caretaker's shoulders as they make their way to the kitchen for some warm food.
Caretaker asks Whumpee to hold still so they can draw their wings in their sketchbook. They say it's so Whumpee can see what their wings look like without trying to bend backwards in a mirror, but there's a silent understanding between the two that it's because they're both craving some time together. Whumpee starts to feel stiff from holding their wings out, but they can't help but smile a bit at the way Caretaker leans closer to watch the light move across their feathers. Though Whumpee had never seen their wings as anything particularly beautiful, they set off a sort of sparkle in Caretaker's eyes.
And maybe some wing-related dialogue, such as...
Whumper grinned, picking up a pair of wire cutters. The tool glinted in the flickering torch light. "Well, you've gone and flown a little too close to the sun, didn't you, Whumpee? Not to worry, though. You'll never fly again, when I'm through with you."
"Oh, why won't you sing for me, my beautiful songbird?" Whumper drawled as they ran a finger along Whumpee's throat. Whumpee only glared back. If it weren't for the muzzle, they would have spat on Whumper's shoes. They squirmed in their restraints, leather straps binding their wings close to their back.
"Oh, you poor thing... What happened to your wings? C'mere, let me look at them..." Caretaker pulled Whumpee into an embrace, grabbing their wings with gentle hands. Their breath hitched as they noticed that, under the tattered feathers, Whumpee's injuries were even worse than they thought.
Caretaker slapped sick Whumpee's cheek, trying to wake them up. "Hey, Whumpee, um. Listen, y-you're fever's getting worse and I just need to know... Whatever you are, do you go to a doctor or a vet?" They weren't exactly prepared for this winged stranger to show up on their doorstep half-dead. While they might have normally found their dilemma a bit comedic, right now it was hard to laugh. Whumpee desperately needed medical help, but they had no idea where to take them.
"Ngh-stop! Let go of my wings, or so help me I'll---" Whumpee's protests turned into a scream as Caretaker poured antiseptic onto a cloth and pressed it against their gaping wound. Whumpee passed out from the pain, falling limp with tears still streaming down their face. As their vision faded, they heard Caretaker's whispered apologies.
"Six months for the feathers to grow back?!" Whumpee's lower lip started to quiver. "B-but... I can't fly..." They took a wing in their hands, running their fingers along the bare, bloody skin where their feathers had been ripped out. Caretaker reached out to put a hand on Whumpee's shoulder, but Whumpee flinched back. A tear rolled down their cheek, stinging them as it landed right on an open cut on their wing. "Nonononono, th-there's gotta be something you can do! Anything! Please... I want my feathers back."
Just... Wings. Yeah.

Warning: Forced self cannibalism and cannibalism. Wing mutilation and amputation.
Fresh blood trickled down Whumpee's back as they leaned weakly against a wall.
Moving hurt too much, even breathing felt like they were tearing their back apart more.
Their wings were the only thing Whumpee could think about.
The muscles that worked the wings sent shock waves of pain through Whumpee's back.
"It's like they're crying. They feel empty", Whumpee's breath hitched.
Their feathers scattered the floor around them. They had lost quite a few because of stress.... and nervous preening.
They shook as they reached for one of the feathers. Tears flooded their eyes as they cuddled it close.
Whumper carried a plate in and set it down by Whumpee.
"I thought you'd be hungry after losing that much blood", Whumper smirked, "just some leftovers from my dinner."
Whumpee side glanced the plate, "I'm not interested."
"Oh, come on, they taste really good", Whumper chuckled, "I didn't do anything to them. Those are from my plate. They're fresh to. You need something to eat to regain your strength."
Whumpee cautiously reached for the plate and grabbed a small piece of meat.
"Is this chicken?", Whumpee smelt it before taking a bite.
"Well, kind of", Whumper smirked, "it is wings from a bird like creature."
Whumpee stopped mid chew, "what?", they squealed.
"Your wings are delicious, aren't they?", Whumper laughed.
"I'm going to throw up", Whumpee threw the food away from them and leaned forward to puke.
The movements caused their back to tear open the scab that formed on their back. More blood oozed down.
"Why? Why did you cut them off?", Whumpee yelled.
"I was tired of trimming your feathers, and you fighting me. Plus I was hungry", Whumper picked up the plate, "you eat these or I force feed you. Your choice, my hard work making these won't go to waste."
Whumpee looked at the plate, "I can't eat my own wings. Please, don't make me."
"You didn't even take care of them. Look at all the feathers everywhere. You pulled them off yourself", Whumper yelled, "eat."
"You did this. You did all of this", Whumpee yelled back.
Whumper slapped Whumpee before picking up another piece of the meat and forcing Whumpee's mouth open.
Whumpee sobbed as they were forced to eat their own body.
Blood loss was getting to Whumpee. They thought they saw Caretaker opening the door and running to them.
Everything was blurry.
What was being said? Everything sounded like echoes.
"Who's there?", Whumpee jumped suddenly, "please no more, I'll be good. Don't touch me."
"It's Caretaker. Shh, it's Caretaker", someone held down Whumpee's hands, "don't fight. We are here to save you."
"Car-Caretaker?", Whumpee whispered, "Caretaker... you're here for me?"
"Yes, you are safe now", Caretaker stopped and rubbed Whumpee's head to comfort them.
"M-my wings, they cut off my wings", Whumpee cried and tried to bury their head in Caretaker's body, "they cut them and ate them. They forced me to eat them."
Caretaker sat on the ground to comfort Whumpee. They saw some pieces of bone that had been tossed away. Feathers were everywhere... Whumpee's feathers.
"I'm sorry Whumpee. I am truly sorry", Caretaker frowned as their friend shook, "I wish I could have found you sooner."
Emergency responders worked around them.
"Where is Whumper?", Whumpee looked up fearfully.
"They are being arrested", Caretaker soothed, "you are safe now. I finally found you."
"Could you grab some of my feathers so I can keep them", Whumpee asked as they were loaded onto a gurney.
"Of course I can do that", Caretaker comforted, "these nice people are taking you to the hospital. I will be there soon to help you okay."
"Okay", Whumpee nodded, "please don't forget me."
"I won't Whumpee. I promise."
Caretaker gathered several feathers of different sizes and color patterns.
They were shown the leftovers of Whumpee's wings.
"This is a nightmare", Caretaker sighed as they patted the wings gently, "this person is sick minded. They will pay for this."
Caretaker quietly watched Whumpee sleep.
They had had a busy few hours as the doctors had to carefully take care of Whumpee. Anything done wrong to the avian's back could be disastrous, especially if the wings were able to grow back.
Whumpee winced as their eyes opened.
Their eyes darted around the room. Their field of view was limited due to not wanting to move.
"Caretaker?", Whumpee whispered.
"I'm right here", Caretaker quickly knelt beside them, "right here."
"What's going on?", Whumpee frowned.
"You just got out of surgery, you were under for a few hours. You are resting now", Caretaker knelt beside them, "do you have any pain?"
"Not right now", Whumpee frowned, "is it bad?"
"It's not great", Caretaker sighed, "but the doctor believes if your wings do grow back, you shouldn't have any problems."
"Even if they grow back, it will be years before I have them the way they were", Whumpee felt a tear form in their eye, "do you think they'll grow back?", Whumpee whispered.
"Honestly, I'm not sure. An avian having their wings cut at the base doesn't normally happen", Caretaker sighed, "whatever happens I will help you get through or try my best to help."
Caretaker looked down, "I am so sorry I didn't get to you sooner. You were so hard to find and I know that isn't a good excuse. I'm sorry."
Whumpee weakly held out their hand to Caretaker.
Caretaker gently held it.
"You tried your hardest. I appreciate you saving me", Whumpee smiled weakly.
"Here is, uh", Caretaker quickly wiped a tear away, "your feathers you requested, I hope the ones I grabbed are okay."
"Thankyou", Whumpee reached for a feather.
"The leftover parts of your wings and the rest of your feathers are being taken care of by the Avian Society. I didn't know what was best for your wings and feathers, I hope it's okay I trusted them to the leaders", Caretaker sighed.
"That's okay, they will probably destroy them", Whumpee frowned, "I'll receive the cremated remains."
"Are you okay with that?", Caretaker made a concerned look.
"That's normal, because of what we are, most of our bodies are cremated.... unless it's an honored person. Some avians believe those people are gods and follow them", Whumpee sadly rubbed their feather across their face, "we don't want the bodies of our people to be dug up and studied in years to come."
Caretaker nodded, "I guess that makes sense", Caretaker glanced at Whumpee's back, "you should get some more rest."
"I feel like I've been hit by a bus... do you think I can eat yet? My last meal was my wings, and I don't want that to be the only thing in my stomach."
"Let me ask your nurse, and I'll go get you something if they allow it", Caretaker stood.
Caretaker came back into Whumpee's room, but was startled to see a few winged people in Whumpee's room. They figured it was part of the Avain Council.
They all glanced at Caretaker.
"Sorry, I'll come back when you are...", Caretaker knew they weren't exactly welcomed, they put up with Caretaker because of Whumpee.
"Wait, you are Caretaker right. You saved Whumpee?", someone stepped closer.
"Y-yes sir, I was able to find them. I wish I could have found them sooner though", Caretaker frowned as they looked at Whumpee.
"Please come in, you're a hero for saving them. Please eat", another invited.
"Oh this is for Whumpee, they were hungry", Caretaker started to walk to the bed.
"Ah yes, thankyou for feeding them", they stepped back to allow room for Caretaker.
Caretaker knelt beside the bed, after a second of Whumpee struggling Caretaker started to help them eat.
"Thankyou", Whumpee smiled after swallowing a mouthful.
"You're welcome Whumpee. I'd do anything for you", Caretaker smiled.
"The council will leave now and allow you to eat and rest. Please let us know if you need anything. We will happily provide you with anything you need", they started to leave, "we will also return the remains of your wings to you when you return to your home."
Whumpee nodded, "thankyou for visiting me."
Caretaker sighed as they got up and sat down.
"I hope that was okay. I wasn't exactly sure what to say to them", Caretaker frowned, "I get nervous around them."
"You did good, I think they will be showing you a lot more respect after this", Whumpee smiled weakly, "I wish I had my wings to cover me up, I'm a little chilly."
"Though your wings are softer, I hope this will suffice", Caretaker pulled up a blanket and covered Whumpee.
"Yes thankyou, and thank...you", Whumpee yawned, "for the food."
"Your welcome Whumpee, get some rest. I won't leave you", Caretaker smiled as Whumpee's eyes slowly closed, "I promise."

Winged Whumpee who lost one wing in captivity. Just one, the other is okay/can recover.
But with one gone, they're out of balance. Walking is difficult, even sitting upright is a challenge. They can learn to adjust, but having to fight against that weight for the rest of their lives is going to cost them in the long run. And with only one wing, they can't fly either.
Now they have to choose. Do they keep their wing, their last remaining one, this piece of themselves? Which will make their lives more difficult and mess their body and bones up over time? Or do they get it removed, which is the better choice overall, but can they go through with it? Give up this piece of who they are, their life and identity?
If they get it done, do they wrap it around themselves before the surgery, sobbing at their loss? Or when they wake up and it's gone, do they break down, as they see their wing, seperated from them? Do they become numb, pushing the thoughts and trauma away?

Augusnippets Day 4: Amputation
Masterlist
tw: amputation, drugging, restraints
Bramble struggled fruitlessly against the cold iron bonds that were keeping him chained to the table face down. The hated metal made him so weak, unable to use his magic, completely at the mercy of the human who had trapped him.
"Well, now, this is a fine prize." His captor ran a rough hand along his sensitive wing, making Bramble shudder. "Gonna fetch a hefty payout. Aren't I lucky?"
Bramble bit back tears, feeling violated by the unwelcome touch. He'd always been so proud of his wings, which shimmered like a hummingbird in the morning sunlight. This filthy human didn't deserve to look at them, much less touch them.
"I wouldn't move if I were you. You'll be real sorry if you do," said his captor, as Bramble flinched away from his hands. "On second thought, I'd better make sure you can't move. These wings are too valuable to spoil."
Just out of the corner of his eye, Bramble could see his captor approaching with a syringe filled with milky fluid. Bramble cringed but didn't fight it. If he couldn't escape anyway, he'd rather be unconscious for this. As the cold drug entered his system, he could feel his limbs becoming heavy and numb, his mind becoming disconnected from his body.
But his fear didn't subside, and Bramble realized that his captor wasn't merciful enough to make him sleep. He'd just drugged him enough to keep him from moving.
Bramble squeezed his eyes shut as his captor picked up a saw from the tray, unwilling to accept what was going to happen, right up to the moment when the blade bit into his wing root.

When Whumpee walked through the door, the team was ecstatic. She’d been missing for just over a week now. They flocked to her, asking where she’d been, how she was, what happened? But she brushed it all off with “Oh, something personal came up”, “I’m doing fine”, “It’s kinda personal, don’t worry about it”, and the team left it at that. They weren’t ones to intrude on other people’s personal lives. But there was something about the way she hesitated before she answered, and how she never took off the big hoodie she was wearing that struck Caretaker as off. She never wore clothes like that. She liked to have room for her wings. Later that night, when everyone else was in bed, Caretaker came up to her room. Knock, knock. Timidly, Caretaker peeked his head into her room. “Hey.” “Oh, hi Caretaker.” “Do you mind if I come in?” “Nope. What’s up?” Whumpee asked. “I, uh, wanted to see if you were doing okay.” “...Yeah, I’m good.” “You, uh, you sure?” Caretaker asked. “You seemed kinda shaken when you came in today, and I’ve never seen you wear a hoodie that big before.” “‘s just a hoodie.” She mumbled. “It’s not a big deal.” “Normally it wouldn’t be for anyone else,” He admitted, “but I know you. You love to have your wings out so you can stretch them whenever you want. What’s up?” She sighed. “It’s- it’s nothing. Nothing to do with you guys anyway. Don’t worry about it.” “Whumpee, I’m the team’s medic. It’s my job to worry.” “Yeah. Yeah. I was gonna have to get this checked out anyway. J-just, don’t freak out, okay?” She was on the verge of tears now. “P-promise me you w-won’t freak out, please?” Caretaker was concerned now, but didn’t want to upset her more. “Yeah, okay. I promise. Now, let’s see what’s wrong.” Whumpee turned around, then pulled her hoodie off, wincing as it brushed against her wings- wing? She was missing a wing.

Augusnippets 2024 Day 4: amputation/degloving/vivisection
CW: winged whumpee, slavery, failed escape attempt, choking, dehumanization, amputation
Orthax's grip was painfully tight as he led Zem toward the metal table.
"You ungrateful, bird-brained, insolent idiot," Orthax muttered. "I didn't want it to come to this, but I can't have you trying to escape again."
Zem's eyes widened when they saw the scalpel next to the operating table.
"No." Zem tried to pull away from Orthax, but he was bigger and stronger. "No!" Zem yelled. The next thing they knew, Orthax grabbed them by the throat. Zem gasped and floundered for Orthax's arm. They couldn't breathe.
Just when they thought they would pass out, Orthax released them. Zem fell to the ground. They barely had a moment to catch their breath before hands were grabbing them and forcing them onto the table.
"Sorry about that," Orthax was saying. "They are easily flustered."
"It's no problem," the doctor said. "I'm quite used to the antics of avians. Now, let's get down to business. You only wanted the left wing pinioned, correct?"
Zem's blood ran cold.
"You can't be serious," Zem said. "You're not going to amputate my wing?"
"Don't be so dramatic," the doctor said, rolling their eyes. "I will only be removing a small part of the wing, enough to restrict your ability to fly."
Zem's eyes filled with tears. "No, please, no." They turned to Orthax. "Please Orthax, I promise I won't try to escape again. I swear it. Just don't do this."
Orthax looked at them with something like disappointment. "You've already broken that promise multiple times. Trust me, I don't want this either, but you've forced my hand." He turned to the doctor. "Yes, only the left wing."
"Very good." The doctor slipped on a pair of gloves. Orthax's hand was on Zem's chest, keeping them on the table. "Avians don't do well with anesthesia, so we will need to restrain them."
Zem fought with everything they had, but it wasn't enough. They sobbed openly in pain and despair as the doctor severed the end of their wing.

excuse me????? your highness you can't just put the image of somebody trying to cut off lucifer's wings (and him letting them!!!!! to save charlie!!!!!!!!) in my head like this??? how dare?? sadfg for real I'm gonna be having that image rotating in my mind for the foreseeable future, thank you very much... (them partly succeeding..... our guy's got three sets of them after all <3)
Listen, my dad made the mistake of letting me watch that scene from X-men once as a kid (content warning for the obvious, and it's not pretty), and wing amputation has lived rent fucking free in my head ever since. It's genuinely gut-churning to me in some ways, but in a way that I can't help but fixate on - especially for angelic characters, for whom the wings are not only a limb but a symbol of their divinity.
Like, I hate it, and I could never write it in a way that's permanent, but I also can't not fixate on it, and - I'm just saying. Lucifer, brutally, painfully wingless, for however long it takes him to painstakingly grow them back. Holding still for the process as well as he can because his daughter's soul hinges on this. Unable to fly, unable to access his divinity, unable to, frankly, deal with it -

Aziraphale was trembling, cold, lightheaded from the pain, clearly in shock. But even in this state, he knew that was a bad idea. "You can't. Crowley- Crowley, you can't." Because if he tried, all of Heaven would simply kill Crowley instead.
