Formed in 2016, Jack Harlon & The Dead Crows are a psychedelic fuzz rock band from Melbourne,Australia, who incorporate elements of blues, stoner rock, folk and doom metal into their distinctive sound. Much of their music follows the character of drug-addicted outlaw "Jack Harlon," with songs that spin tales of desperation and survival in a fictitious western landscape. In 2023 the band released their third studio album 'Hail To The Underground' - A fuzz-drenched, genre-crossing collection of renditions by Jack Harlon & The Dead Crows selected for their musical importance and personal meaning. Filtered heavily through the spaced-out psychedelia of Jack Harlon's inimitable style, this collection includes songs originally written by lesser-known artists through a multitude of decades. Throughout their career, Jack Harlon & The Dead Crows have toured and performed with the likes of Greenleaf, Sasquatch, Wo-Fat and WHORES.....~

#180 - The Motorpnakotic Fragments - Motorpsycho (2014)
By technicality this is not a full fledged Motorpsycho album, but RYM counts it as one, so I’ll take what I can get.
After the release of Behind The Sun, Motorpsycho decided to hold a promotional event through exclusive pre-orders for a new album, and after 400 pre-orders were made the album would not be able to be pre-ordered again. Afterwards, each week the ones who pre-ordered the album will receive two songs in the form of a single. It took about 4 weeks before anyone could fully get their hands on this record fully, with 4 singles to boot. This would create the complete collection that is The Motorpnakotic Fragments, or The Motorpnakotic Manuscripts.
Was this 4 single and 4 week release pattern worth it? Not really, in my opinion. What you get here is to the similar vein of Behind The Sun and Still Life With Eggplant, though with a slight—late 90s indie rock twang to it all, which gives the band’s psych prog output a bit more of a unique flair on this collection of songs. You get a good amount of jams on here, not too long, not too short, with each song creating this uniquely old and noisy feeling, like a mix between 90s noise rock bands like Unwound and Sonic Youth, with a 60s style psych rock performance of Jimi Hendrix and early Amon Duul II, creating this rather interesting experience that I enjoy, and is the album’s strong suit.
I do think, though, this album never quite holds those big and interesting Motorpsycho moments that other albums have. It makes this feel much weaker in comparison to stuff like Let Them Eat Cake and Blissard, which had those moments in quite good amounts. Here, there are no moments that feel like Motorpsycho giving their all, which is rather disappointing because those moments are exactly why I love this band’s brand of prog rock. I do not expect them to create Death Defying Unicorn 2 or Still life With Eggplant 2 for this release, but I want a little more out of these already good songs.
This is an interesting release project for the band. It is unique, creative, and experimental. However, what is on here, whilst good, would work better for other albums in the band’s discography. It is not a bad album, but there are much better from this band out there.

Recorte.

Tarotplane is the solo project of PJ Dorsey from Baltimore, Maryland, who draws from 1970s krautrock and experimental psych to weave otherworldly landscapes of extended drone. Jennifer Kelly reviewed his last album, a split with Prana Crafter, noting “a deep space emptiness …[and] a guitar that loops and twists through whooshing stillness, the notes pinging through cavernous spaces.” Here he counts down some important records for us.
If you like this one, check out our Listed from Prana Crafter, the other half of the Symbiose split.
The Same—Sync Or Swim
youtube
I became aware of this record recently because of Jack Rollo who has a fantastic show on NTS radio show called “Time Is Away.” This is the work of Robert Cox who just recently has some of his work released under the name Rimarimba. Really fantastic reel to reel tape based guitar work that’s very inventive and distinctive. Sort of like a post punk version of Achim Reichel. I find that using equipment like the reel to reel creates something with a flavor that’s special.
A La Ping Pong—Go(1981)
youtube
Another recent discovery courtesy of my friend Andrea Ida. Frippertronics styled guitar workouts using a reel to reel. Love the textures he gets and both this and the Same really helped when making “Symbioses.”
Günter Schickert—Samtvogel(1975)
youtube
One of the finest guitar players during the Krautrock era. Manuel Gottsching gets most of the love, but for me this man is right up there. Totally individual style. It shows what one man a guitar and an echobox can do.
Deuter—Babylon(1971)
youtube
For me, this is in the top 10 of all the 70s German records. Incredible vibe. Tape loops, field recordings, ethnic instruments...has it all. Julian Cope fumbled hard when he did not include this in Krautrocksampler. I want all my records to have a little of this vibe.
Algarnas Tradgard—Rings Of Saturn(1972)
youtube
This is my favorite track from one of my most beloved albums. This band had a perfect blend of heaviness and experimentation. If this band were German rather than Swedish, they would be on everyone’s radar. While totally cosmic, there is a darker, almost gothic side to their work. They also were one of the first bands I knew of that blended the synth with more organic elements like violins and cellos. Maybe Amon Duul 2’s more dark and brooding cousin.
Claudio Rocchi—Rocchi(1975)
youtube
Rocchi is one of my absolute favorites. Similar to Franco Battiato but often has a more psych folk bent. Similar headspace to the Deuter. His track on this LP “Zen Session” is a masterpiece. I am drawn to guys like Rocchi who create their own universe.
Pink Floyd—Interstellar Overdrive (1967)
youtube
Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd is where it’s at for me. This recording was made for this film and it shows the more raw, experimental side of Barrett’s playing. it was the soundtrack to a very interesting documentary from Anthony Stern called “San Francisco.” Stern was a Cambridge friend of Syd’s.
Popol Vuh—“Newsclip 1971”
youtube
These guys are my other favorites. Love almost every era. I have learned so much from them. They had 2 excellent guitar players in Conny Veit and Danny Fichelscher with similar but distinctive styles. My side on “Symbiose” is dedicated to my friend Danny. Growing up I used to bring my guitar teachers tapes of Popol Vuh and ask them to teach me that style. Never really worked out sad to say. One day I hope to really bring more of Popol Vuh’s sacred music into my work.
Ame Son—Seventh Time Key I Just Want To Say(1970)
youtube
The description in the YouTube comments really do a nice job explaining why Ame Son were special. I used a riff from this track on my first album because I found it so inspirational. Not having a regular drummer in Tarotplane has always bummed me out a little, even more so when I hear this track. The playing is just so free and connected. The fuzz guitar is just amazing. Two members of Ame Son were in Daevid Allen’s Bananamoon group that later became Gong. Not too shabby a pedigree.
M.A.L—Deimos (1975)
youtube
I was doing a mix one day for a radio show concentrating on the more psychedelic side of post punk and I threw in a track from M.A.L. I had a little bit of his work that featured on weird Belgian Industrial/Avant Garde tapes from the early 80s, I assumed he was of that era. Turns out I was very wrong. Daniel Malempre (M.A.L) was in 70s Belgian group Kosmose. Around 1975 he sent personal demos to famed German record label Ohr. He never heard back, but a short time later, the famous “Inventions For Electric Guitar” came out using some techniques (but not all, it has to be said) on the reel to reel deck similarly to M.A.L. Gottsching had not used the reel to reel in that way prior to that release. Coincidence, maybe? After all, Achim Reichel pioneered some of these “innovations” several years before anyway. Really who can say? All I know is his style really influenced me and Daniel was nice enough to teach me how to use the deck in a new and innovative way. I am lucky to count him as a friend, and we now have a group together along with another friend Julian, called Omayyad. Sometimes meeting your heroes works out after all.
