Homemade is cozy, cost effective and made to your liking; but coffee shops have their own brand of cozy, and foster a sense of community and creativity. There are hundreds of coffeehomes in Milwaukee and each is unique and warm, and seems to truly care for the ritual. We all know collectivo; but what is your favorite? Mine is FUEL in Riverwest. Fuel has that 1990’s punk in nyc vibe, and is neighboring a wonderful brewery and a legitimate functioning and super cool video store!

What is your favorite? Do you have a taste for something in the autumn? My family always stopped for apple cider donuts when we would head to our cabin in the fall, and to this day I love indulging in one. On the side of a fika break or at the end of a hard day, a nostalgic treat can feel so comforting. Bonus points if you make enough to share with friends- or visit your local baker and support small business. 1. Everyone is welcome. Old friends will always have a special place in your heart, but newcomers deserve equal warmth- people you haven’t met yet are often a wealth of interesting information and talent! You just don’t know them yet. 2. Be curious - remember to pass the baton in conversation. No one likes a conversation hog, or people who constantly draw the attention back to themselves. Ask questions, and actually listen to their answers, and be comfortable with the quiet spaces. You may be surprised by what you learn. 3. Food and drink don’t hurt. It’s not about inebriation or overindulgence, it’s about giving yourself a treat and sharing it with others. A beer can loosen up the anxious party goer, and sharing a chocolate can break the ice. If you are in the habit of feeling guilty around a little indulgence, try and keep it to yourself! The errant comments about food and body guilt are harmful, and definitely not cozy. Everyone deserves a treat once in a while, and it’s much more fun when you just relax and enjoy it. Plus; you never know what your neighbor is going through. 4. Avoid politics, money, work stress and gossip in conversation. Sometimes a friendly debate can be fun, but these topics can often result in a sour mood or a boring conversation. 5. Not too little; not too much- as a guest, ALWAYS bring something to contribute, even if it’s just a bag of ice or a bunch of wildflowers- at the same time, don’t try and outdo your party host. Allow them to shine. As a host, don’t go overboard with the cleaning, cooking or cost- or, alternatively, clean off your couch and make sure you at least have coffee in the cupboard. Von Trier is perfect. Aside from being really warm and welcoming, the waitstaff is lovely and the selection of drinks and food are divine. They have popcorn, and Glüwein, and hot buttered rum!
