From the sketchbook to the canvas. I love, what Rebecca Solnit called, “The unconscious parts of the city”. Those parts that are industrial wastelands, steel ghost towns that artists immigrant too. I’ve lived in Boston’s waterfront lofts around south station in 1980s. Again in San Francisco’s Dogpatch hood in 2010. Now I’m in Brooklyn’s industrial east Williamsburg/bushwick hood. No longer “unconscious” as it has a thriving arts scene. But that success naturally matures, marked by tourists and sightings of baby strollers. The Gargoyle of Maynard. Grand eagle sits atop the old Maynard Trust Bank. Sitting there since 1923. The Bank is closed, it’s vaults are empty and feels like it hasn’t seen a good day since Reagan was president. But an artist bought it and I got a tour and of course a roof visit. A slice of urban exploring in this tiny town. Work in progress. Having analogue fun here. Blew up, printed, and cut out paper with temporary fixative to canvas. Now i can play in my Gotham neighborhood till I find the right composition.
