2020 started. Here are a few things I look forward to
Let’s focus on the positive. Nathaniel Rateliff has released a new song today! The title track to his upcoming album “And It’s Still Alright” which will be released on the 14th of February. I can’t wait. It sound more like the “old” Nathaniel, less funk, more Americana and Folk which leaves more room for the gloomy emotions.  In this song Nathaniel is dealing with the loss of his best friend and producers Richard Swift without being utterly sad. There is hope left.
youtube
Another highly emotional thing I look forward to is listening to Caspian’s new album “On Circles” for the first time on the 24th of January. Full range of emotions. I love emotions. I love Caspian. I don’t quite know what to expect  but since the first release “Flowers of Light” has an joyous element to it, it won’t too sad.
Hellas Filmbox (15.- 19. January) is the only film festival I attend regularly. It’s the Greek film festival in Berlin. Always wild, out of the ordinary and lots of food for thought. This years motto is “Feminine, sunny & blue”. Feminine like the whole festival including movies and the team behind the scenes, blue like the Greek ocean and sunny like the Greek sun which is also represented in this years poster. The opening movie “Winona” by The Boy combines all these things, except a woman named Winona but therefore some women hanging around the beach. I don’t know more yet. I look forward to it although I still quite haven’t understood the last film I saw from The Boy. Oh, and he will also play some songs live during the opening on the 14th of January. Apart from that I always, always recommend to surprise yourself. Watch some shorts.
AmericanaFest UK is my first music festival of the year. It will take place in Hackney, London, from the 28th-29th of January and an award show on the 30th. I love this festival because it not only shows the many different sides of Americana and Folk music but it takes places in many little venues, all in walking distance. During the day you can take part in the conference or just the showcase festival. I’ll get more into detail what to see in a couple of days.
And now for some tours I look forward to:
Sunset Sons – yep, I still love this band. And they’re finally coming back to Berlin….and other European countries. It will be fun and I hope they play “Alien” live, so I can sing along at the top of my lungs.
15.01. Amsterdam 16.01. Paris 18.01. Zürich 20.01. Stuttgart 21.01. Köln 22.01. Berlin
Jo Quail is one of a kind. When you see her for the first time, I promise you won’t look at a cello in the same way after she played. I remember how fascinated I was by the soundscapes she creates with her electric cello and some loops. So much experimental joy. I’m happy to see her again after many years of waiting.
19.04. Köln, Helios 37
20.04. Hamburg, Nochtwache
21.04. Berlin, Musik & Frieden
02.05. München, Feierwerk
Ok, the gig of The Slow Show in Berlin is sold out, like half of the dates of their stripped down tour and I just can’t wait. I still have to wait until March but it’ll be worth the wait. If you have the chance to travel to one of their gigs, do so. Trust me.
Last but not least is the Tour of Tours – a collective of musicians who bring you nothing but joy and laughter and love when they are together on stage, celebrating friendship. I still get goosebumps when I hear their “Song of Songs”. Every cell in my body is vibrating for excitement, my hands want to clap in rhythm. My grin gets bigger and bigger with every word – and that just happens when I watch the official live video on youtube! Just imagine how it’s when they playing live!
05.02. Essen, Zeche Carl
06.02. Köln, Gebäude 9
07.02. Osnabrück, Kleine Freiheit
08.02. Erfurt, FRANZ MEHLHOSE
09.02. Frankfurt, Brotfabrik
11.02. München, Muffatwerk Ampere
12.02. Hamburg, Uebel und Gefährlich
13.02. Berlin, Lido
14.02. Langenberg KGB - Kultur.Güter.Bahnhof
15.02. Hannover, Indiego Glocksee
OK, one more. Lilabungalow are back. Never completely away but they have new songs and a new show. Sort of. It’s their music, animation and whatnot in the Theater Erfurt. It’s called “Blindland//Lichten”. I don’t quite know but I love it when bands are using a different path than usual one. Unfortunately I can’t attend despite I’d love to. It’s 17th/18th of January. However, I just hope from the deepest part of my heart that they’ll repeat this performance either in Berlin or at least later this year again. I’m willing to travel for this.
I’m glad I wrote this little outlook. It’s a good reminder, I was already going down the wrong lane. But yes, 2020 will be a good music year.
Have a good week,
Dörte
P.S. Have you checked out Reuben And The Dark x AG’s new track “Hold Your Head High”, yet? It was released just yesterday. My hymn.

Consumer Guide / No.81 / singer-songwriter Lisa Redford with Mark Watkins.
MW : What can we expect from your new EP - Edge Of Love?
LR : Edge of Love has five self-written songs that are a blend of styles that I’m inspired by: Americana, country, folk, soul and classic pop. The songs are really heartfelt and I’m so proud of them; they really represent me as an artist.
It was produced by José McGill - who produced my last EP Another Place and Time - and there is a mix of band tracks and acoustic songs with really creative arrangements and instrumentation including dobro, pedal steel, acoustic and electric guitars, cello and piano.
There’s a real warmth to it with José adding some really lovely subtle sonic layers and textures. Lyrically, it’s romantic and bittersweet, exploring aspects of love and relationships with a theme of letting go. This includes realising how hard it is, and also letting yourself go; whether you know you need to, or letting yourself go emotionally – letting down your guard, even if that means the risk of getting hurt.
MW : When and where can we get hold of it?
LR : Edge of Love will be released worldwide on 10th May (2019). As well as being on all the digital platforms, it will be for sale at my website and Bandcamp store.
I’m really excited about the EP and can’t wait for people to hear it. So far, there has been an amazing response with lots of radio airplay, and lovely reviews.
MW : Will there be a video?
LR : There was an official music video for the first single Anything But Easy which was released on 22nd February (2019). It was filmed on a beautiful day in Walberswick and Dunwich in Suffolk by a really talented videographer called David McKenna.
We were fortunate that it was a glorious day and he captured such a wonderful light. The natural landscape where we filmed really compliments the song and was exactly what I wanted for this particular track.
Here is a link to the video:
https://youtu.be/8cT1opG9HiU
MW : Any plans to tour?
LR : I will definitely be doing shows to promote Edge of Love and I am also playing some lovely festivals in the summer.
I’ll be launching the EP at a special concert in my home city of Norwich on 9th May (2019) - the night before the release date - which will also feature some of the amazing musicians who played on the release.
I would really love to tour more of the UK, and Europe. The best way to see where I’m playing is to keep an eye on my social media and website.
MW : Looking back, what were some of your music highlights of 2018?
LR : Album highlights of last year include You Are Someone Else by Fickle Friends - and - I saw them play a brilliant set at Latitude festival last year, Love Is  Dead from Chvrches, Ruins by First Aid Kit, and May Your Kindness Remain by Courtney Marie Andrews - who I also saw play an incredible gig in the summer at Norwich Arts Centre.
I have recently started hosting a music show on Future Radio in Norwich, and the playlist is an eclectic mix of indie, folk, Americana and electronic : so I listen to a lot of bands, and artists, old and new, and still love discovering new music.
MW : How's your music column going?
LR : It is going well. Currently I’m really busy promoting the EP but I love to write about music, and in particular songwriting, when I can. Last year, I did some interviews for Songwriting Magazine which included Courtney Marie Andrews and Ethan Johns. They both provided fascinating insights into their writing and recording processes. I’ve also previously interviewed Sarah Darling and Bob Harris. As well as Songwriting Magazine, I write an arts and music column for website All Things Norfolk where I also share my music adventures and do reviews.
My most recent article for Songwriting Magazine is all about the inspiration behind my latest single, Anything But Easy, in a feature called Song Deconstructed:
https://www.songwritingmagazine.co.uk/interviews/song-deconstructed-anything-but-easy-by-lisa-redford/44573
MW : How's Bob (Harris) keeping? Is he still a source of support and encouragement?
LR : Yes, I saw Bob recently at the AmericanaFest conference earlier this year when he hosted a lovely In Conversation with John Oates. It’s always lovely to catch up.
It’s definitely been a real source of encouragement having had Bob’s support. I have been invited to record two Under The Apple Tree sessions on separate occasions, and he has featured all of my releases, first playing Be Around (a ballad from my first album Slipstream).
He also played my song, Dragonfly, on a “Best of British Special” amongst major artists such as Coldplay, The Rolling Stones and The Kinks. I’ve also recorded two live sessions when he hosted a BBC Radio 2 show on Saturday nights. “Whispering” Bob’s also introduced me on stage twice: once at The Borderline in London, and again at C2C Country to Country Festival at the O2. It means such a lot to me having someone as respected as him be a supporter.
MW : What’s your view on the public outcry over dumping plastic?
LR : It saddens me that there is such a huge threat to the oceans. Plastic doesn’t go away. Only a small percentage of plastic is recycled worldwide.
I try to be conscious of my own plastic use, and reduce, and reuse as much as I can. For example, I always bring my own reusable shopping bags to shops, and completely avoid single-use plastic bags. I never use straws, and carry around my own water bottle rather then buying bottles. Naturally when I do use single-use plastics that can be recycled, I always ensure I recycle them.
It is important to stay informed on issues related to plastic pollution, and to try to raise awareness of the problem.
MW : Describe your music room and/or record collection and how you may be adding to it or re-organising it, and formats...
LR : I have lots of treasured music memorabilia that I try to keep organised and in good order. It is an extensive collection of vinyl, music books, CD’s and more unique items - mostly by The Smiths and Britpop artists. I have previously talked about the memorabilia for a BBC People’s History of Pop documentary and love how they bring special memories of going to gigs and festivals.
MW : What is your favourite plant, tree, garden?
LR : Sunflowers. I’m drawn to the sun and love how they’re vibrant, big, daisy-like and evoke feelings of happiness. They were also famously the subject of Van Gogh’s series of stunning paintings, definitely my favourite still-life.
Tree? It would have to be the mighty oak tree - chosen as the national tree of many countries and a beloved symbol of strength. It evokes feelings of nostalgia and memories of many dreamy summers.
Garden? The Plantation Garden in Norwich, which I often love to visit. It’s a stunning restored Victorian town garden, and its features include a gothic fountain, flower beds, lawns, woodland walkways, rustic bridge, Medieval wall and lots of architectural details. It’s beautiful and dreamy - a tranquil space in the city - and I have filmed some live acoustic videos there, and had photos taken. In the summer there are also outdoor Picturehouse cinema film screenings, which is a lovely way to spend a summer evening.
MW : Do you keep a ‘To Do’ list?
LR : I do have a to do list. I always have my notebook and diary with me. It’s a busy time at the moment with the new release, so I’m making a daily ‘To Do’ list and updating it helps me keep up with what I need to accomplish each day.
MW : If you could have six guests over to dinner, who would you invite & why, and what would you all eat & drink?
LR : Richard Curtis and Emma Freud - such a lovely, warm and benevolent couple. Emma recently made a lovely comment about my latest music video on Twitter, and I also make a very brief appearance in Richard’s new film, Yesterday, as a festival goer.
Stephen Fry - he would be full of fascinating conversation, is such a font of knowledge and we have a Norfolk connection.
Tom McRae - he’s such a brilliant songwriter. I love his witty and dry sense of humour. He asked me to support him at a recent concert. He is a inspiration.
Bob Harris - always love to spend time with him and talk music. He would of course be a lovely addition.
Adil Ray - we’ve chatted on social media. He’s really funny and intelligent. It would certainly be a special evening of laughter and stimulating, fun conversation.
We would have scallops to start, and then for mains we would enjoy pan-fried salmon with creamy garlic sauce and vegetables. Dessert would be a choice of mocha chocolate fondant, or tiramisu and, as I’m a real savoury fan, there would also be a selection of cheeses with crackers, red onion jam and ruby grapes.
Drinks would be a choice of red and white wine with some Dom Pérignon Vintage flowing throughout the evening too! Cheers!!

Aged 18 with over 4 years of live performance, playing guitar and writing songs, including festivals such as Mugstock, Pandorafest, Northhop and Vamos Americanafest. Lisa has fearlessly sung to thousands at St Mirren FC and was invited by the Scottish Football Association to perform at Scotland international games. Lisa released her debut EP in 2017, funded by Paisley 2021 UK City of Culture bid.
The songs received lots of radio play, an appearance on STV, the BBC at the Fringe, and comments from music people that she has immense talent and “will make it” one day. The songs were written between age 14 and 16. Title track Free Spirits has been included in the Fatea Autumn showcase compilation album of UK wide artists. Lisa won Renfrewshire Live and Unsigned Award May 2017 and has just been nominated for Best Female Artist in the Radio Wigwam awards. She was also a prize-winning finalist in the Salute Music UK Music Makers competition and the Radio Clyde Jim Diamond Awards.
In 2018, gained further recognition of her songwriting skills, reaching the finals of the Song Academy Young Songwriter competition, judged by Tom Odell and Guy Chambers. She also was selected for emerging artist showcase slots at Celtic Connections, Killin Folk Festival and Dougie MacLean's Perthshire Amber festival. Another aim, to take her music further afield, took Lisa to gigs in Newcastle, London, and even New York, where she was invited by the American Scottish foundation to perform for New York Tartan Week in April 2018. Her sound has been compared to early Taylor Swift (her initial inspiration, Suzanne Vega, Sheryl Crow, Regina Spektor, and Kirsty MacColl.

Recommendations for Americanafest UK, London, 27.-30. January 2020
Next week it’s time again to head over to London for Americanafest UK and find some new music to fall in love with. It’s a very lovely and pretty intimate showcase Festival with round about 75 emerging bands, a three day conference and an award show to top it off. Just like last year the venues are all within walking distance of each other in Hackney. I’ve spend some time and listened to the performing artists and want to give you a little recommendation of what I found interesting. I think with the conference it’s always what is useful for you, not only what sounds good.
For the full program head over to: theamauk.org.
28th of January 2020
Tumblr media
In the afternoon Austin Lucas will play a special gig at Night Tales. First delegates and then also festival wristband owners can attend this show at 5.15. Country with a punk attitude. It will be a special afternoon. The official showcases start at 6 pm.
I’ve seen Robert Vincent supporting Jarrod Dickenson last year and he man from Liverpool sounds very much like being from Nashville. Wonderful talent and I’m looking forward to hear him again. Another artist I’ve got on my radar for quite some time is Terra Lightfoot – pure, raw emotions. When I first read Irish Mythen name, I thought of a traditional Irish singer, singing old folk songs but she is plays in the “Canada House” (aka Moth Club). Easily explained: Born in Ireland, moved to Canada. First I saw a video of “The Auld Triangle” and there are the Irish roots and then I watched a whole lot more videos and what a powerhouse! Another powerhouse but in a different way is Lady Nade. She has got something very old in her voice, old Soul music inspired. Insanely beautiful! Maybe I’ve chosen Strung like a Horse because the drummer has blueish hair which happens to be my favorite hair color, maybe I’ve chosen them because they sound like a whole lot of fun and some big grins and some dancing. Well, it’s all of it. Same for Izaak Opatz, although in a slightly different way. Opatz has lyrics like “SHE GIVES ME LOVE UNDER THE TABLE  / I WAS HARD PRESSED AND NOT THINKING STRAIGHT / I’VE BEEN SO LONG DREAMING OF HER ANKLES / UN-SOCKED AND LOCKED ACROSS THE BACK OF MY WAIST” (Limited Liability).”
29th of January 2020
Tumblr media
First of there’ll be a lunch break set from Dan Sultan at 12:45 in the Empire Bar. “Start” you day, right? The first song I heard from Mapache was a heartfelt song in Spanish, touching even though I didn’t understand a word. The duo from California create wonderful harmonies, no matter if it’s in English or Spanish.  Songwriter and director Jonathan Wilson is this year’s musical director of the award and will also play a showcase – surely one I shall catch, hoping for some new songs of his upcoming album “Dixie Blur”. The latest release from the album, “In Heaving Making Love”, is such a catchy tune I want to listen to in endless loop. The Canada House might be my place to be. Two musicians I’ve been an watching for some time will play on the 29th: Catherine MacLellan and Megan Nash. They keep returning one way or the other and I’m excited to watch these two strong women performing their emotional music live.
youtube
For the nominees of the Award Show on the 30th of January please visit https://theamauk.org/news/8091170. There will be performances by Nick Lowe, Billy Bragg, The Milk Carton Kids, Felice Brothers, Ida Mae, Elles Bailey, Jamie Freeman and Danni Nicholls. Last year was good, this year will be better. Personally I always look forward to see Ida Mae again. And you?
See you next week,
Dörte
