how were you introduced to TOA? im an avid skimmer of the tellius tag on tumblr and saw toa crop up a few times in the past but the concept of fodlan as a setting fundamentally scared me for a good while because it was the only fe game i wasnt even remotely familiar with. then one winter holiday in 2022 i saw neffis leonardo crop up in the tag and i was like lmfao it would be fucking hilarious if i started writing edward again right and then i blacked out for the next 12 hours and suddenly im here.

do you have any pets? nope. i do want a rat a spider or a snake though. maybe a toad even

do you believe you have a type of character you gravitate towards writing? reiterating this from the last time i filled this out: little guys and pensive freaks. i also fundamentally like characters who experience internal conflict of interests between their morality and their loyalty/duty/other social trappings. its tasty!

do you have characters or types of characters you don’t think you can handle writing, but wish you could? i love digging deep into lore and piecing it together even if its not immediately evident and a bit fragmented (its the soulsborne enjoyer in me). BUT if i need to do this for a main or major character with a bajillion dialogue and context clues strewn across three playthroughs of a game and i could easily overlook things i would be a little too scared of getting soemthing wrong. "oh x loves orange juice" "WRONG x said as a one off in the middle of this heavy story segment that he hates orange juice and prefers strawberry milk actually" i would fucking die. i would die

what kind of scenes, situations etc do you believe you enjoy writing the most? UNRELIABLE NARRATION. shit you look at and go "hm that aint whats going on rn at all". love that shit. i try to not overuse it but i love when it becomes more evident midway through a scene. good stuff. i also love writing impulsive stupid responses and vividly descriptive scenes, but also i love writing affection and devotion in general, even if exceptionally gooey and cavity-inducing, even if ill-advised and misplaced. there's so much more i can add here but i love writing i love writing with people i love writing with y'all. love and peace.

and violence. i used to be scared of fight scenes but now i love thinking in those milliseconds between the violence. flurries and slurries of blood. can i rip more shit apart pretty please

do you have any scenario in mind for your muse(s) that gets you thinking “man i hope i get to write this one day”? [stuffs my fist in my mouth and screams]

incredibly loosely speaking. i want edward to realise he's been a bit fucked up actually and have to sit in that thought instead of shrugging past it as usual. i want chad to sit with someone and just connect with them so they don't feel as alone (yes this has happened i just love when this happens). i want denning to forcibly feel an emotion, and whether they get better or worse from it might depend entirely on their company.

favorite TOA-related memories? sorry that i keep bringing up edwards 37.5 damage astra during the final fight of apollyon ouranos i just can't stop thinking about it. that's so much fucking damage. that said i loved banding together against the impossible and FUCKING WINNING

Avareida was waiting in the small café in Jericho. They had promised their friend to meet them there, since they had arrived in the city the day before. They yawned. They were tired from their nightly excursion. They crossed their arms on the table, put their head on it, and tried to fall asleep when a waiter appeared.

"Can I get you anything?

"A double long ristretto espresso with whipped cream, but no cream," they grumbled, raising their head.

"There's no such thing," he answered embarrassed.

"I know. A strong coffee without sugar is fine."

"I'll be right back."

He left, they buried their head in their arms again. The door tinkled as it opened. Small heels clicked on the floor. Avareida recognized them as those of Thalia, their friend and history teacher at Nevermore Academy. They sighed and sat down properly.

"You're late, Thalia."

Thalia was a small, pudgy, laughing black woman. Her mother was descended from native Americans, and her father from black African slaves, and she made a point of showing her students all the horrors the colonists had committed in America. Avareida understood. They were a descendant of the Cree.

Thalia always wore very colourful clothes, probably, Avareida thought, because she wasn't that happy after all, and today was no exception: she had put on a yellow dress with white polka dots and a little pink hat to match her tights. Where did she get all her clothes? It was still a mystery.

"Yes, I'm sorry Rei, we had a little trouble at the academy yesterday…"

"What kind of trouble?"

The waiter served Avareida their coffee and they began to drink it while listening to their friend, who ordered a long coffee.

"Well, for a start, our former botany teacher wanted to destroy the school and to do so she resurrected Joseph Crackmore, her ancestor."

"Woah..."

"Three students managed to stop him, but one of the inhabitants of the town, who was a Hyde and who was killing people in the area, associated with this teacher and another student stopped him."

"Well…"

"And finally, the principal, Mrs. Weems, was found overdosed with belladonna, and one of our manchineel plants has disappeared. We suspect that thieves may have taken the-"

Avareida choked on their coffee. They coughed to regain their composure.

"Sorry, what were you saying?"

"It is suspected that thieves wanted to take this plant and came across Mrs. Weems, who then gave them a dose of belladonna, not enough to kill her though. The question is: who stole this manchineel, and for what?"

"Mmh… it's strange, this whole thing…" Avareïda said, looking outside.

Thalia nodded, the waiter gave her her order.

"Especially very dangerous! If this person doesn't know what it is, they could die! And if they know, we can be sure of their criminal ambitions!"

Avareida put down her cup, now finished, with the most innocent look in the world.

"Do you know what a manchineel tree is?"

"To be honest, I didn't know until this morning…"

"Read The Path of Poisons and How to Cure Them, by Avareïda Hydrurga, and you'll never have any doubts about a potentially poisonous plant again."

The teacher laughed a little.

"Haven't you finished your commercial?"

"Hey, my income depends almost entirely on the sale of this book! And I love money!"

Thalia sighed, looking up at the sky... well the ceiling.

"So, how was your trip to the South Pole?"

"Nice, I made a friend. I called her Katia."

"What do you mean you called her?"

"She's a female leopard seal. At first she was a bit aggressive, but eventually she accepted me completely."

Thalia smiled as she watched her friend sink into her seat, gesturing wildly as they explained their encounter with the animal. Rei had that look in their eyes when they talked about their travels… she loved to hear them tell their stories.

"Isn't that your mother's name, Katia?"

"Yeah, because she acted like a mother. She used to bring me food. Which was penguins. And since they're not part of my diet, I had to decline her offer…"

"How do you manage to make so many enemies among humans and so many friends among animals?"

"I'm beginning to think that I'm not the problem… well, anyway. Is your principal okay? I mean, belladonna's a hell of a poison."

"She's in the hospital. I'm going to see her right after. You can come with me if you want. I'll just have to stop by the police station first. As you know about poisons, you could help them, couldn't you?"

"I don't see how I could be of any use to them…"

Thalia got up and went to the counter to pay.

"You underestimate yourself… I'll buy your coffee, a welcome to Jericho gift. And since you don't have any money…"

"Thank you for your great generosity but I can still afford coffee."

"I don't want to hear about it. I'll buy you one."

"All right, all right…"

Avareïda stood up and put their brown jacket back on their shoulders. They ran a hand over their hair, which was still neatly tucked back.

"You'd look good with red hair," Thalia remarked, coming back to her.

"Do you think so? I might try it… But I like my hair black."

"Shall I show you around town, and on the way we go to the police station?"

"Oh, yes, I've always wanted to!" they sneered

Thalia gave them a flick.

"Sorry, I don't have much choice, I've been summoned as a witness… You're lucky you weren't there yesterday. You would have been suspected. What time did you arrive anyway?"

"A little before midnight," they lied.

In truth they had arrived at 9 p.m., but they had nothing to blame themself for and didn't want to get into trouble with the law…

The door tinkled again as it opened. Avareida sighed. They had chosen the wrong moment to steal the manchineel tree…

Thalia pushed open the door to the police station, and was immediately greeted by the sheriff. Rei found the man was sad. There was something tired in his eyes. But they didn't know what. The place was small, smelled of ink and coffee. The policeman questioned Thalia with his eyes after noticing Rei, who was going through all the corners of the police station with a curious eye.

"Avareïda Hydrurga, this is a friend who arrived last night. They were not there on the night of the incident if that's what you're wondering. But they can be a great help to you."

"You're exaggerating, Thalia…"

"I'm curious to see that…" the sheriff said

"All because I know a little about poisons," they sighed.

"Mmh, we'll see. In the meantime, I'll take your statement, Mrs Kedlan."

"No problem. Can Rei come along or do I have to be alone?"

"Since you're not a suspect, you can bring whoever you want."

"Then they're coming with me."

Galpin opened the door to his office and pulled the blinds wide open. A bright light flooded the room. He invited Thalia and Rei to sit down, which they did.

"Well, Mrs Kedlan, tell me what you know."

"Well, the boy who called the emergency room went to warn me and other teachers, and when I arrived, Mrs. Weems was lying in the greenhouse, and a manchineel tree was missing, but there was no sign of a crime. The thief knew the code of where the manchineel trees were put."

"What were you doing before?"

"I was in my classroom, correcting papers."

The policeman wrote everything down on a sheet of paper, Rei was silent.

"Well, do you know if Mrs Weems has any enemies?"

"I don't know of any. And even though we are not necessarily well regarded, she is well respected."

"I see, so you believe in the hypothesis of a robbery gone wrong?"

"I don't," Rei cut in.

The Sheriff opened his mouth and took a few seconds. He leaned back in his chair, put his pen and elbows on the table, put his hands together and intertwined his fingers before speaking.

"Why did he do this?"

"Why, when the thief had a manchineel tree in their hands, would they use nightshade to poison Mrs. Weems?"

"What do you mean?"

Avareida crossed her legs, sinking into her seat.

"The thief knew the code, so they came from inside the school. Mrs. Weems wouldn't have suspected them until they took the manchineel, and so wouldn't have stood in their way. This means that she interfered after they took the manchineel. Now, when you have a manchineel tree in your hands, you don't try to poison with belladonna."

"Why not?"

"If they had just thrown the manchineel at Mrs Weems, she would have been out of the way. For ever. A manchineel tree is toxic enough to poison you if you stay under it. Anyway, you'd better wait for the potential witnesses to wake up. Starting with Mrs Weems. She'll probably know what happened."

The sheriff nodded.

"Of course, but I like to get a head start…"

"It's possible that the botany teacher or the normie attacked her and stole the manchineel tree… That would fit very well with the fact that she attacked her and knew the code. And it would be the normie who poisoned her because…"

Thalia nudged her. Avareida fell silent.

"I have no more questions. You may go."

"Thank you, Sheriff Galpin."

Thalia stood up, Rei followed. They left the place.

"Rei, the normie was her son."

"Oh… Damn. You think I should go apologize?"

"No, it should be fine. You couldn't have known."

"You want to go to the hospital now?"

"Yeah, I'm just gonna stop by and buy her some flowers first. Then I can show you the plant shop, I think you'll like it."

"You know how to talk to me…"

Thalia smiled and walked towards a small shop on a street corner. Huge bunches of poppies, lavender and craspedias indicated that it was the beginning of summer. Avareïda liked poppies, especially pink, wild poppies. They found them particularly charming. They decided to buy some flowers for Mrs. Weems. Their friend went straight to the counter and ordered an assortment of peonies. Rei, on the other hand, walked slowly through the potted plants of different sizes and shapes. Crassulas, bonzaïs of all kinds, everything smelled of soil and humidity. The tables on which large bunches of leaves were placed to embellish the bouquets were made of rough wood. A few everlastings were drying, hanging from the ceiling. They remembered that Larissa had always liked immortals. Rei approached the counter.

"What can I do for you?" the florist asked with a smile.

"I would like a small bouquet of Calendula officinalis and Helichrysum stoechas."

"What colour should the marigolds be?"

"Yellow and orange please."

"Well, I'll make your bouquets, if you'll wait a few minutes."

"No problem," Thalia said

The florist disappeared into the back of the shop. Avareida continued her little observations.

"Rei, who are the flowers for?"

"For Mrs. Weems, I felt bad coming to the hospital without bringing anything."

"But you don't even know her?"

"What's the big deal?"

"And what flowers did you ask for?"

"Marigolds and shrubby everlastings."

"Why shrubby everlastings?"

Rei pointed to the little yellow flowers hanging from the ceiling.

"Because they don't wilt. That way, even if she doesn't wake up for several months, she can enjoy them. The marigolds will be dead, of course. And I like immortals. Besides, surviving belladonna poisoning, although it depends on the dose, is quite an achievement."

"Hm. A student injected her with physo… stuff. Apparently it stabilized her well and kept her from deteriorating."

"Physostigmine. He had the right reflex."

"What's physostigmine?"

"A poison found in Calabar beans."

Seeing the expression of incomprehension on Thalia's face, they continued.

"A vine of the bean family that grows in the tropical forests of Africa."

"But… why a poison?"

"Oh, it's a poison that has the opposite effect to belladonna. Belladonna slows the heart rate, Calabar bean increases it. It's what is used to treat atropine toxicity in general. If he'd put too much on her, it might have killed her, but if he hadn't put any on her at all, she'd probably have died anyway. It was a risk to take. You'll have to reward the boy."

"I see, fighting fire with fire."

"Sort of, yeah."

"So she was incredibly lucky that someone who knew about this came along…"

"You have no idea," Rei murmured thoughtfully.

The florist returned, their bouquets in hand. Thalia paid for her bouquet, Rei paid for hers.

"Say, florist lady," Rei asked, "do you have a loyalty card or something? I might come here regularly."

"Oh, yes, I do."

She pulled out a small card with a sunflower on it from behind the counter and applied two bramble stamps.

"Every 10 dollars you get a stamp, after 10, you get 10 dollars free. The first stamp is automatic."

"Thank you very much."

"You're welcome. Have a nice day."

"Have a nice day."

Thalia and Rei walked out of the little shop, each holding a bouquet. The streets began to fill up slowly. Rei was pensive. He wasn't sure if he wanted to tell Thalia that he knew Mrs. Weems. He was waiting to see if the woman had changed.

"Rei, shall we take my car to the hospital?"

"Shall we? Yes, I don't know where it is anyway."

"It's not far, we could walk but it takes about half an hour. I'd rather take the car, I'm in heels."

"I'm in heels too."

"Perfect, I parked it near the café."

Avareida followed her friend to the car, thinking about her last real conversations with Larissa.

"You can't, it's not normal to be like this."

"I didn't choose, Rissa, I'm sorry…"

"Stay away from me, you're disgusting."

"But… Rissa…"

"LArissa, for you. You know what, don't talk to me anymore. I don't want to be friends with your kind."

They shuddered, hoping that their old friend had changed. After all, they hadn't seen each other for almost thirty years. They couldn't hate her, even after all that time. Larissa had been a great support to them. She had helped them to integrate, which was more difficult with the two classes they had skipped. It was thanks to Larissa that they had a more or less normal school life. They had always gotten along with her very well. A smile passed over their lips as they remembered the nightly trips to the forest, the times they'd skipped school to go shopping, the coffees they'd had together. Rei shook their head. Yes, their relationship had been good for them. Not everything about Larissa Weems was a waste.

"Rei? Is everything all right?"

"Is it? Oh, yeah, sorry. I was just thinking about my years at Nevermore."

"Oh, come to think of it, did you know Larissa when you were there?

"From a... certain distance, I know she was there, I might have talked to her once or twice, but I'm not sure. She was already 18 when I entered the academy, I was only 13. I only had two years in common with her."

"That's right, I forgot that you were younger than me."

"When you're around 40…"

"Shh, don't talk about that, I'm still 20 in my head."

Avareida burst out laughing. Thalia frowned as she unlocked her car. Rei climbed into the front passenger seat.

"And that was an old person's sentence."

"That's right, just mess with me. Just because you're four years younger than me doesn't mean you can. Watch out, time's catching up with you."

"Okay, boomer."

"So, shall we go to that hospital?"

"Well, get going, old girl."

Thalia grunted and turned on the ignition. As the car approached the hospital, Rei became lost in thought again. Thirty years had passed. But Larissa was not a forgettable character. Shit, they thought. They didn't want to risk loving her again. Yet they couldn't help but wonder how much she had changed.

"Say, Thalia. Are you still dating that other teacher?"

"Elizabeth? Yes, still. I mean, it's been a few weeks."

"And… your principal is okay with it?"

"She doesn't know about it. It's still new, we haven't told anyone around here, we don't want it to get out amongst our colleagues. Besides, I wouldn't be surprised if she was a lesbian."

"She? Lesbian?"

"Why does that shock you so much?"

"I don't know, I'd heard stories about her love for Gomez Addams, at the time, that's all."

Rei smiled a little. Of course she were a lesbian. They'd guessed it, at the time. But Larissa had locked herself in her closet so much that they'd come to believe it.

"Mmm… I don't know… But my gaydar rarely deceives me. You know, we're pretty close, though. Larissa is someone I like and respect very much. I think I can count her among my friends. She has a courage that I don't have and…"

Thalia's voice caught in her throat.

"God, I'm so glad she's not dead. The academy wouldn't have been the same without her."

"I hope she wakes up soon, then."

"Yes…"

Thalia parked the car in the hospital's large car park and got out. Rei followed her into the building. The hospital smelled clean and new. There was no smell of dirt, no smell of damp. It was all white. They were given the room number: room 128. They walked to the lift, without speaking.

The room was clean. Larissa was lying on her bed in a white patient's gown, her eyes closed, tubes in her nose and arms. A machine on the side was going "beep…beep…beep…beep…", as the lines representing her heartbeat distorted into spikes. Thalia readjusted her hat, which she had refused to remove at the reception desk, explaining her gorgon situation, and placed her bouquet in a vase, on the small cabinet next to the main one. Rei did the same. And then their eyes roamed over the principal's body. She had changed, yes. But she was still as beautiful… Very tall, too. Rei estimated her at almost 6"3. They were only a poor 5"7 feet tall.

"Get well soon, Larissa. The academy needs you again," Thalia said, as if the principal could hear her.

A nurse entered the room and motioned for the Gorgon to follow her.

"I'll be right back, Rei."

Rei nodded and left. They took the opportunity to take a closer look at their former friend's features. She was beautiful…

"So you're a lesbian, huh? You should have admitted it to yourself earlier, stupid. You'd better get over it soon. I think I'd like to see you again. You're lucky, I could have hated you."

They left the room to wait for Thalia, who soon returned with a smile on her face.

"Her condition is completely stabilised and she is starting to recover. She even showed signs of brain activity in some places that indicate a near awakening. She'll probably be back with us in a few days!"

Rei smiled. They loved to see their friend so happy. And the thought of Larissa waking up made them happy too.

I’m ollie! i’m 19 and when i’m not working or going to school i spend time with my partner @pukegaloor and my two cats. i also love to roller skate when i get the chance.

Background: No one ever thought that Bill Cipher would ever have children, let alone mostly HUMAN children but he did. Well it was more like one children. That children's name was Isaac William Cipher and he was born on the isle of the lost, a near year after his future captain, Hannah Hook, was born.

He grew up never knowing his mother, not really sure he ever had one and with no siblings to speak of. He and his father had a shakey relationship, and if you were to ask the boy the meaning of the world 'dysfunctional', he'd simply reply 'My family' with a blank face.

He joined Hannah's crew at 5 and became the front desk attendant, and started working at Ursula's Fish and Chips when he was 6. He spends most of his time with his crew and outside of them, no one ever really knows what he's thinking/feeling because he has a great poker face.

He feeds on controlled and non life destroying chaos, and is interested on visiting gravity falls if he were ever to get the chance. Hannah treats him as a little brother and even though it drives him nuts, he's secretly touched that she cares.

Backstory: Giulia Ferochii was born in Sicily to Antonio and Alessandria Ferochii. Her grandfather- Rodrico Ferochii- was the head of their crime family, Ferochii Branch of the Sicilian Mafia, and before they moved to America to escape the authorities, he already saw the potential in her when he observed her conning a neighborhood kid out of his pocket money at age 4. He started to train and groom her afterwards to eventually take his place as Head of the Family and she was subjected to harsh punishments for any failures. Her mother objected but remained quiet as she knew how volitile her father in law could be. Her father worked in the factories and also knew how violent his father could be as well but knew better than to say anything

Instead of attending public school, she was homeschooled by her grandfather and was taught the family business while having hired tutors to teach her basic knowlege and how to navigate politics and various social circles to further spread the Family’s influence.

During the summer of her 6th birthday, a collection went wrong and innocent blood was shed. Not wanting to deal with the aftermath due to his notariety, Rodrico instructed his capos to mantain their territory, packed up his family, bribed the taxi to drive them to the docks where they boarded a passenger ship with fake passports and sailed to America.

Once on land again, Rodrico got into contact with some American associates who set them up with a nice apartment and forged documents and they set up shop once more once getting familiar with the local crime families as to not step on toes and business started up as usual and Giulia’s training resumed.

At 13, she started to interact with petty thieves and other families and started to build her own circle of influence and rackets, much to the pride of her grandfather and the silent horror of her parents. When she was 15, her grandfather passed away and her father took up the reins of the family, despite have superficial training due to the attention heaped onto his daughter by his father.

Before he passed, Rodrico pleaded Giulia’s case about being the new Head of the Ferochii Family to the Sicilians,despite her being female and after some deliberation, agreed since her name had been passed around positively from various families, but only after she turned 18 and they knew that Giulia would be the one running the show behind the scenes.

She met Vito and Joe when she snuck out and instantly grew enamoured with the shy Vito eventually marrying him when he came back from war

current writing wips projects i can remember off the top of my head:

a corporation has unlocked a genetic code that gives people biological superpowers, and an alliance of rebels fights them under the guise of a university. Main characters powers include lightning, future sight, stars and making knives cut like through butter.

Magic and superhumans are slowly re-emerging and the UN forms a team of young heroes to fight threats. Members include a guy who is perma-bonded to a tech alien, Mother Nature's chosen one who is a drunk southerner, and a magical supersoldier who carries the mysterious, ambiguosly sentient blade that gave him free will.

two college students [a trans guitarist and a badass biker] are suddenly teleported to an endless plane containing the entirety of human creativity, imagination and mythology, and must partner with various eclectic weirdos from both sides to get home.

Aliens invade in the future and humanity fights back from advanced bunker systems. Also the alien's initial attack recharged the earth's magic aura that had dried up over the centuries, so magic is present too.

The adventures of The Eclectic Thieves, Murderers and Morality Guild, an adventuring party determined to wreck [their own] shit, with such characters as a bodybuilder tiefling with a flesh sword, a pair of twins [an artificer and a druid] who can't stand eachother, a pretty regular noble heiress who moonlights as a thief, a bloodhunter with severe hemophobia from trauma and a satyr bardess who isn't stoned, definitely.

A horror movie script despite the fact i hate them, about 4-6 friends who become the target of a serial killer. There's a supernatural theme and a twist at the end.

A sort of buddy cop drama about a woman who needs help investigating the crime ring she's involved in, so she gets her friend. Said friend is a sociopath who lives in a cabin in the woods and has no aversion to killing if necessary. He's a pretty nice guy compared to the rest.

An SCP Foundation fanfic about a barista/thrift store employee who joins a magical freedom fighter group by accident, gets magic powers and a cool ghost friend, and becomes a wanted figure by the secret organization controlling all of human history.

A Jojo's Bizarre Adventure fanfic set in the early-mid 2000s about the main jojo and her rootin tootin cowboy stand on a scramble to get allies to stop the Y2K Bug, which is a stand controlled by the main antagonist. Said allies are a nerd who can summon things, his brother the street brawler who absorbs energy, a biker who can reflect things, a goth with a lovecraft stand and a sentient, animate stuffed crow/raven who can appear as a larger bird.

A gender-neutral teen in alternate history early 2000s toronto unintentionally finds a piece of asteroid that is alien technology, and now must gather each piece before they cause damage or people use them for bad things. Inspired by shows like Static Shock and Spider-Man, basically.

A story in the style of shows like B99, Parks and Rec, Community and Abbott Elementary. Set in an office studio environment [NOT the office, have not watched it] and mainly serves as a tour of the big city and fictional US State i came up with. The main characters include a depressed bitch, her wheelchair roommate, a Palestinian-American michael jackson impersonator [Free Palestine], and a senior who's off his meds and on the latest trend.

And various spinoffs and sequels i'd rather keep secret for if i ever write my damn things.

Clearly i have too much of the thoughts. Just wanted to share.

The Top Movies of 2023

Every year I feel like I write the same spiel about the truly concerning  number of movies that I compulsively watched, and then make false promises about being more intentional about my film-watching and my blog-writing. But fear not, there's no overwrought analysis of my film watching this year, just an assurance that, for once, I have stayed true to my word and reduced my annual total by a sizable chunk. It was, however, still a lot. 

Truth be told, I've been trying to write this wrap-up for weeks now, but I found myself enveloped in the gloom that sets in during the first few weeks of any year, except this time the fog seems denser than ever. This is not a reflection on the state of movies right now though. While everything else has either gone to shit or currently in the process, movies have not been this good in 4 years. We're lucky to have some incredible filmmakers return to peak form (Marty S) and others showcase their talent for the first time (Celine Song). 

But this was also the year where domestically (The Kerala Story) and internationally (The Sound of Freedom), we saw an uptick in the mainstream success of conservative films built on the premise that the right-wing needs to go save good innocent people who are being taken advantage of by the savages. And shamelessly, people bought into this mediocre (at best) pandering, simply because it reinforces their narrow world view. As someone who constantly whines about the death of big dumb cinema, if this is the future of spectacle film, I might just be out on it.

Apologies to American Fiction, Poor Things, Ferrari, You Hurt My Feelings, The Boy and the Heron, The Holdovers and All of Us Strangers (all of which I have not yet seen), to Showing Up, King of Kotha, Marlowe, Your Lucky Day, The Boys in the Boat and The Last Voyage of the Demeter (all of which I saw and desperately wanted to love) and to myself for deciding to watch Ghosted, Heart of Stone, White Men Can't Jump and Salaar against my better judgement.

2023 was a spectacularly disappointing year for horror. The biggest hit of the year was Talk to Me, a movie that I liked but is so overwhelmingly despondent that it drowned out the scary aspects of it. Evil Dead Rise on the other hand harkens back to the classic horror franchise format, taking a tried and tested premise (cocky young person accidentally summons the dead) and putting it in an unpredictable new setting (a high rise building). It strikes the perfect balance between nightmarish, gruesome and goofy that makes you yelp and giggle all at once.

9. 2018

This is the type of peak Bruckheimer/Simpson disaster flick that just went away 10 years ago, only scaled down to fit the Malayalam film industry. Does that take away at all from the melodrama or spectacle? Not even a bit. It's incredibly well made and well-balanced emotionally, and the ingenuity of the production design ensures that it will continue to hold-up visually in years to come.

8. Maestro

If we put aside Bradley Cooper's obvious thirst for acknowledgement by the Academy and just look at Maestro on its own, you might get a glimpse of a movie that bends the classic Oscar bait biopic template to its own absurd ends. It's not a "cradle to grave" story nor does it limit its scope to a small, well-defined period in Leonard Bernstein's life. Instead it's much more impressionistic and formally inventive, giving the viewer a feel for who the man was in all aspects of his life. It's in direct conversation with the template of the "great man" biopic, starting down the path of each trope only to veer delightfully off course, whether that's by sidestepping into a dance sequence or literally running away just when a scene starts to feel too cliché.

7. Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.

As a person who cannot stand kid angst, I went into this movie expecting to like it with some reservations, which is very much how I felt about Kelly Fremon Craig's previous movie, The Edge of Seventeen. But Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. rises above the cringey uncomfortable moments we've come to expect from a coming of age story. It's wholesome and heartfelt, but with enough of a bite to it to overcome the usual allegations of saccharinity that are hurtled at a movie of this sort. It's finally perfect, with some great kid performances, and even greater showings from the adults. In particular, Rachel McAdams takes what could have been a put-upon harried mom role and adds just enough humour and sparkle to make her character feel fully fleshed out, without making the whole movie about her.

6. How to Blow Up a Pipeline

Every year there's a movie that feels like it's ripped from the inside of my skull. How to Blow Up a Pipeline is exactly that. It's not for everyone (people have been known to zone out in the first 15 minutes) because it's an intense, violent story about trying to spark a revolution. Here's the thing about this movie, it believes in the power of direct action against corporations. And so do I.

5. Afire

The latest film from Christian Petzold is on this list precisely for that reason. From the first time I watched Phoenix, I realised this was a director I'd want to be following closely. His movies are often strange and unpredictable, unfaltering in their portrayal of the weakest aspects of human nature while still somehow tying together and extremely compelling plot. Afire is to me the strangest of the lot, which is really saying something because his last movie was about a mermaid.

4. Polite Society

Nida Manzoor is not yet a household name, but I can't imagine that'll be the case for much longer. I was first introduced to her work in the excellent British punk rock comedy show We Are Lady Parts (which is about a group of British Muslim girls who start a punk band), and Manzoor brings that culture clash chaos into Polite Society. It manages to take a love of old-school film stunts, an iconic Bollywood number and quick-fire dialogue and roll all that up into an irresistibly charming story about sisterhood.

3. Kaathal: The Core

You might be able to argue that 2018 is on this list because of pure sentimentality and my personal attachment to Kerala. It's my list after all, my predispositions will be on display. Kaathal is not on here for those reasons. It's here because it's a heartfelt, earnest depiction of what being gay might mean in rural Kerala, and it somehow walk the tightrope between idealism and realism in a way that gives the audience hope that the unconditional acceptance of queer identities could be just around the corner. There's almost a straight line from Vijay Sethupathi’s role in Super Deluxe to this, but it's still a real pleasant surprise to see someone of Mammootty’s stature in an Indian film industry use that influence to make such a nuanced, emotional and ultimately hopeful film centred on a queer person. 

2. Past Lives

I could not for a long while explain why this movie hit home for me, but I think I'll give it a go. Past Lives depicts so clearly the struggle I've often felt to not let your present self erase your childhood memories and cultural identity, even if they're conflicting (as they often are). There is a familiar underlying fear in this movie that a happy memory you might have from a past life (if you will) would crumble under any amount of scrutiny, like an ancient paper suddenly exposed to sunlight. I've been told that I'm annoyingly sentimental about goodbyes (more so than usual, if you can imagine that) . After all, it's 2024 and very easy to stay in touch. But I know how easy it is to lose track of people that you loved deeply, like they were family even, simply because the physical and cultural distance was too wide to bridge through just social media. Past Lives made me think of them, and of all the different roads my life might have gone down and how, despite all that, I'd still choose to be where I am today. Schmaltzy, I know, but this is the movie to get in your feelings for.

1. Killers of the Flower Moon

Every year, my number one movie is about storytelling, and this year is no different. It's not a purposeful trend though; I just respond very strongly to movies that play around with the idea that film is the most objective medium for storytelling. Killers of the Flower Moon is a premier example of that sort of subversion, although that doesn't necessarily come through for most of the running time of the movie. Superbly paced and tonally immaculate, Scorsese delivers one of his best films in the seventh decade of his career, and it hinges almost entirely on a perfectly calibrated performance from Lily Gladstone. But this film wouldn't work nearly as well if not for the incredibly nuanced and insightful ending that ends up being a testament to the art of adapting true stories.

There were some other bits and bobs from this year that I wanted to share.

As far as TV goes, Lockwood & Co. is perhaps the best new show of the year, despite it getting cancelled after the first season. It's spooky fun designed to satisfy horror mavens without turning away those who are not fond of your usual scares.

Slow Horses continues to be just as clever and callous as ever - a breath of fresh air in a somewhat stale spy-fic landscape.

And if you're looking for a traditional sitcom, there was none better this year than Primo.

As I write this, Killer Mike's Michael just won a whole bunch of Grammys. I've been a fan of him since I first stumbled onto the first Run the Jewels album, and this was the first time in recent memory that the Grammys made the cool choice in the rap categories. The only cooler pick would have been Mick Jenkins' new album, The Promise.

Other albums that I loved from this year include Cracker Island from Gorillaz and Paranoia, Angels, True Love by Christine and the Queens, both excellent entries into the pop-rock category for the year.

BIOGRAPHY

When Rufus was only 10 weeks old, his mother gave him up for adoption. He grew up in El Paso, Texas, and his adoptive parents Emil and June were very loving, eager to raise a child after trying and failing to have one of their own. Four years into his new life, his parents adopted again, a baby girl named Leah. Rufus and his sister became thick as thieves and he was very protective of her.

Rufus is very close to his adopted grandmother, Ada, who taught him to cook, speak Dutch and become a perfect gentleman. 

She also taught him how to use and manage his psychic abilities, which began showing when he was five years old. His ability works by touch, whether of an object or a person, offering Rufus flashes of information about their history. Now and again, he might get a premonition, but these are rare and especially draining.

Tragedy struck when Rufus was 12, however. After days of confusing visions and a horrible feeling that something bad was going to happen, 8 year old Leah was abducted in the night. Though Rufus tried to protect her, the boy was no match for the unknown kidnapper and she disappeared from his life just like that. The boy swore it wasn't a man, but a creature, though nobody believed him. Exhausted by the assumption that he was simply suffering from stress and trauma, Rufus stopped trying to convince his parents that Leah was taken by something, not someone. Ever since, Rufus has hoped to find his sister, delving deep into paranormal research through the years.

It was this mystery and another that drove Rufus to an interest in mysteries and crime, eventually leading to establishing himself as a private detective.

When he later in life tried to reconnect with his birth mother, the orphanage could only provide him with newspaper cuttings about her death, a murder which was never solved. He had no leads, no links, nothing to go on. All he knew was the staggering truth that his mother had been a sex worker, her murder swept aside because of her status in life. But she'd been sure to give him up to a good home before her death, and this loyalty stayed with Rufus. Her last act of love was a stark reminder that nobody should be judged for their position in life.

With a desire to discover the truth behind the loss of two very important women in his life, Rufus worked hard to do the same for other families, to try and bring them the closure or answers they needed.

After hounding the owner of Diamond Detective Agency for a whole summer, he initially started out as a PA / coffee boy, taking on baby cases such as missing cats and stolen bikes. He's allergic to cats but loves them anyway, grateful for the opportunity to start training himself as a detective. He did this while keeping his abilities secret, knowing full well that if anybody knew, they’d ridicule him right out of the agency, as well as calling all his work into question.

It was his accidental solving of another detective’s case that earned him a place as an official PI. Rufus figured out the most likely suspect involved in the kidnapping of a young boy who was promptly rescued and reunited with their family. Since then his skills have only gotten better and higher profile cases find their way to his desk. However, this doesn’t stop him from taking on private investigations of his own.

VERSES

Main Based in Texas (but willing to travel between states), Rufus works as a Private Investigator. Rufus had a pretty normal upbringing. A happy family, a nice house. But the ‘disappearance’ of his younger sister, Leah, and a harrowing experience he learned to be a ‘Close Encounter of the Fourth Kind’ tore all of that apart. Learning and researching as much as he possibly could about extraterrestrial contact on Earth, Rufus is still searching for his sister. He uses his job and his psychic abilities to aid him in that quest.

Chapter 1:

It was a normal day at the Hizuru marketplace. Many vendors from all over were trying to sell their products and make a profit. Of course, that did not stop one foreign woman from coming into the local hotspot. The woman considered herself lucky to get a stall, but there were rumors that thieves (better known as street rats by the royal guards) often steal at any given opportunity. The woman blew it off, considering it as a bluff and a marketing tactic to scare her off, and focused on her stall.

The bespeckled woman was meticulously placing her cabbage in neat rows when her first customer came by. 

Perfect! The woman thought as she stopped to greet the man. Time to make some money! She gave the man a big smile and scanned him. The man had short blonde hair and innocent blue eyes. He also gave off an air that screamed, “I have money,” by the way he was dressed. Thieves my ass, the woman scoffed internally. This guy seemed at least to be middle class. 

“Hello, Miss. I could not help but notice how big your cabbages were, and I wanted to buy some.”

“Of course!” The woman exclaimed. “I have the best selection in the country! I even grew them on foreign soil.” 

The man smiled. “Well, they look delicious. Can you tell me more about them?”

“Certainly! I actually got the seeds from the country of Marley and planted them around summertime. I had to make sure the temperature and soil were right enough for them to grow. Let me show you just how my hard work has paid off up close.” The woman made a move to turn around but was stopped by the man quickly grabbing her wrist. 

“There’s no need for that!” He said hastily. “I can see it all from here.” 

The woman gave him a puzzled look. “Are you sure? I can-” She was interrupted by a crash and a man cursing to himself. “What the- MY CABBAGES!!” she yelled out in horror. What was supposed to be a perfect stall was ruined by the top caving in and some cabbages on the ground. The woman immediately turned to find a man running off, followed by a blonde man who looked familiar.

Wait a minute. The rumors began to play back in her head.

“Thieves!!!”

"We are never doing anything risky like that again." The blonde huffed and playfully punched his friend in the shoulder. "I almost had it if you didn't fall."

The two had managed to outrun the guards by climbing up towers, hiding inside buildings, and running through a few crowds. Things like that have become daily for them, and getting the guards off their tails was not hard. 

His brunette friend laughed in response. "Look at the bright side, Armin. We at least got the cabbages."

Armin rolled his eyes. His friend was not wrong, but obtaining it almost cost them an arm and a leg. "Sure, Eren. Did you get anything else?" Eren grinned before pulling a small sack out of his pockets. He opened it a bit to reveal a small melon and some loaves of bread. "We will be eating good tonight!" Armin exclaimed and increased his walking speed. His mind was focused on the food.

Eren chuckled and followed his friend. They entered an alley where a boy and girl hid from the afternoon sun. The girl looked up at Eren, then at the sack, and looked away as if she was afraid to talk to him. Eren empathized with the girl. Eren was alone at first until he met Armin. He was in the same situation once, too, a poor orphan with nowhere to go and no one there to help. Now the two were considered street rats by the people of Hizuru. 

Eren stopped and dug inside his sack for a bread loaf. He gave the girl a small smile and handed the bread to her. She did not respond but furrowed her eyebrows. 

"I promise it is fresh. I know you need this more than I do."

The girl eyed the bread one more time before slowly taking it. She broke it in half and handed it to her brother.

"Thank you."

"You're welcome." Eren smiled and ran to catch up to Armin. The two continued walking until Armin suddenly stopped and looked over the corner they were in. "What's wrong?"

"Him." Armin pointed to a man riding through the streets in a white stallion. The man, with a face that matched his horse, looked rich based on his ridiculous outfit with too many designs and jewels to be considered normal. "I've heard rumors about this guy, Prince Jean, coming to visit the princess."

Eren peeked at the man with slight interest. "Really? This must be the tenth guy to visit the poor girl. I hear she rejects them all."

Armin shrugged. "Probably. He should leave when he gets the chance. I mean, look at the guy!" He said and pointed at the prince. "He has a horse face!" He laughed, and Eren joined in too. The two were about to head back home when they heard the prince yell and a child scream. 

"He even sounds like a horse," Eren muttered, running with Armin to the source. The two stopped when they saw Prince Jean yelling at the two siblings from earlier. The boy was down on the ground while his sister stood protectively before him. 

"You street rats deserve the worse punishment!" the prince yelled and began to raise his hand up to slap the girl.

"Tsk. It's people like you who disgust me." Eren frowned while holding the prince's wrist to stop him. Meanwhile, Armin quickly went to the kids and brought them out to safety. 

"What did you say?" The prince said, glaring at Eren. 

"I said you disgust me. At least if I was as rich as you, I could afford some manners." 

The prince saw red. "Oh, I will teach you manners," The prince yelled, pushing Eren towards a mud pile. 

"Eren!" Armin exclaimed and went to help his friend. The onlookers around them only laughed. The prince smirked victoriously and made his way past the castle gate.

Eren knew he needed the last laugh. "Hey, look at that, Armin. It's not every day you see a horse with two rear ends."

The prince stopped and glared at Eren. "You are nothing but a street rat. You were born as one, and you will die as one. There will be no one around to mourn you except for your fleas."

The prince's words angered Eren even more. He knew it was a losing battle. "Why you-" He yelled and ran after the prince, but the tall doors slammed shut in his face. "I'm not worthless, and I don't have fleas," he muttered, bowing his head in defeat. 

Armin sighed and grabbed Eren's arm. "C'mon, Eren. Let's go home."

MaryAnn L. Miller was born in Western Pennsylvania the day before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Some of her early memories are listening to the casualty lists on the radio, playing with ration cards, and parents rushing to close the curtains during air raid blackouts. The story of Princess Mafalda of Savoy was happening in Italy at that same time. Miller’s mother was named after the Princess, one of many Italian immigrants scattered throughout the Diaspora, perhaps aware of the suffering of their relatives remaining in Europe, but unable to change the horrors of Hitler and the Third Reich.
