Today, kilts have become a symbol of Scottish culture and are worn on special occasions like weddings, festivals, and Highland games.

22-23 june
Although I was leaving Brussels that day, I rose with a few hours still left to me, so I quickly headed out for some breakfast at the same café I visited before (the one guarded by the bulldog Marcel). As I ate my pain au chocolat and yogurt I carefully planned my time and returned to my hostel on time to check out, leaving that little corner of the city that had been mine for three days behind. Bag safely stowed in a locker, I took the underground tram circuit around to the Porte de Halle, the original city gate. This little castle pokes out from a stretch of public garden mostly populated by elderly migrants at this time of day, and I sat outside its pale walls without feeling too much of an urge to go inside. Since I was feeling hungry I sat down at a café around the corner for a sort of brunch, which was very tasty and European – savoury waffle, meat and cheese, a small pot of carrot velouté. And as with my breakfast it came with both a hot and cold drink of choice, so I was not going thirsty.
Saying goodbye to the city, I arrived at Bruxelles-Midi and boarded my first train of the next leg, headed for Frankfurt in Germany. This trip took about four hours of speeding across the the flat green countryside occupied by the occasional cow until we found the outskirts of Frankfurt—an industrial city, whose main station opened onto a wide and messy street full of clamour. Halfway through the train journey the Belgian police in their white shirts and jaunty hats departed to make way for the German officers, heavy in black with military berets and guns slung under their arms. There were more of these soldiers in the city itself, many more of them, standing post on the roads that teemed with agitated football fans. As I crossed into the city I saw them arguing bullishly with some rough characters causing a scene; and down by the river where the football festival was revving to life they were arriving in truckfuls.
My hostel was only five minutes down the road from the main station—I was only there for the night—so I was able to appreciate convenience where the rest left a little to be desired. It was hot and bright and the streets were so loud, I was covered in sweat as I threw my things onto a creaking top bunk and hurried out to find some dinner. Of course I had been aware that the football was on in Europe from all the Belgian flags and football-themed advertisements over in Brussels, but I was met something else altogether in Frankfurt. Every second person was dressed in colours, there were even Scottish men in their kilts loitering outside pubs, and people honking horns as they drove down the streets with flags hanging out of their car windows. Men were shouting and singing drunken fan chants on every corner, so I retreated into my headphones as I made my way towards the centre of town.
Frankfurt was suffocating and crass on that night, in that part of the city that was only tourists and football fans, mostly young Europeans whose arms were weighed down with their beers. I have a general principle of trying to eat interesting local food if I can, but it was clear that was not to be tonight. So I stopped at an American burger chain for dinner—unjustly expensive, but they get you by offering unlimited toppings on your burger and drink refills from futuristic machines. Then I walked to take a look at the city squares and the Frankfurt cathedral, which unlike the black or pale limestone churches I have seen so far, was built from a faded red rock, as were many of the old 19th-century buildings, But most of what was there in the old town was really new or reconstructed; it had all been destroyed in the war.
Going to sleep felt like a world apart from resting on the quiet canal bank of Brussels, with the window to our dorm open letting into the heat and sounds of the city at night. But when I woke up in the morning all those late partygoers seemed to have stumbled home, leaving the roads empty except for mountains of rubbish. Since I had a morning train I ate breakfast at the hostel (opting for a German delight of cold cuts on toast and chocolate cake) and went promptly to the station where I bought some supplies for the next leg of the journey. To make up for my burger of shame I bought a pretzel since that seemed sufficiently cultural and went to the platform to board my train to Dresden. This trip was just over four hours. I was sitting opposite an elderly German couple who I communicated with through vague smiles and nods. The German countryside was so completely different from Belgium; suddenly it became hilly and the trees were a blanket of deep coniferous green, broken up by patches of village, always white with red roofs. Every old town was marked by a gothic church spire, until at last we turned onto a track by a river and the much greater towers of Dresden came into view.
This was only a temporary stopover, but I was captivated immediately by this mere glance from the window. I anxiously checked the time between our arrival and the departure of my next train. An hour and twenty minutes. Scrambling to find some change in euros for a locker, I stowed my belongings (helpful to be so light a traveller, that it all fitted into the cheapest option), bought a one-hour pass for the tram and went straight into town. Like Frankfurt, of course, this Dresden is hardly an original. But unlike Frankfurt it would perhaps like you to think that it is—the magnificent town square and its church were all rebuilt or restored in the old style. On the shore of the river were those remarkable gothic constructions seemingly untouched even though they'd once been little more than burnt-out shells, and a much older crowd of tourist than the last city I'd been, comprising mostly elderly German interstate travellers. The city, despite how much of it was lost not too long ago, was beautiful, so I promised myself one day I would come back.
The train from Dresden to Prague was my first time this trip on a train with compartments and a corridor. Everyone else in my compartment seemed to be Czech. They were less fascinated by the landscape than I was, as we wove between forested mountains and passed by the occasional lake. I had no opportunity to actually see Prague until we were in the middle of it, pulling to one final halt at Prague main station. Although nothing could be seen on the journey in, the moment I stepped outside the beauty of the city was evident. I went clutching the handful of Czech crowns I had secured at the station money exchange and began the walk towards my hostel. On the way I first saw the gleaming domes of the National Museum and the spires of many churches situated between the tall, pastel-coloured apartment blocks. The city's charm was uniform, and it reminded me more of Italy, with its three tiny minimarkets on every block and tiled pavements. I wasn't quite prepared for how hilly it was going to be—my walk turned out to be more of a hike.
After settling into my hostel, a nice shared apartment up on the fifth floor, I made plans for dinner. Venturing out I was surprised to see several tiny dogs being walked by their owners in the streets, never on leads but trotting along dutifully beside them. Some were so small you worried less about them wandering onto the road than someone stepping on them by mistake. I arrived at a pub recommended by the hostel where I sat out on the pavement and ordered the most Czech-looking thing on the menu—I have no idea what it was called, but it was like three pieces of tender pork on top of potato pancakes, each with a different type of cheese melted over. Valiantly as I battled this delight of Eastern Europe I only managed about two-thirds, and though it was actually delicious, I felt as though I would be happy to not eat it again for at least several years. So I walked back to the hostel, stopping at a supermarket on my way to buy a few treats from the expansive wafer bar section, already enchanted by the city of Prague, and the cloudless sky that was still warm and brightly lit well into the quiet evening.

Why was the first Union officer killed in the American Civil War wearing a grey uniform?
On May 21st, 1861 the 11th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment stormed Alexandria, Virginia, a mere week after Virginia had declared secession from the Union. The regiment’s commander, Col. Elmer Ellsworth, entered a local tavern to remove the Confederate flag that was flying on the roof of the building. While descending the steps with the flag he was ambushed and shot by the tavern’s owner, James W. Jackson, who was in turn bayoneted to death by another soldier. Col. Ellsworth became the first Union officer killed in the American Civil War, and one of the earliest deaths of the war in general. Today his uniform is on display at the New York Military Museum, complete with the bullet hole from his fatal shooting. However, to those not so much versed in Civil War history, something may seem odd about the uniform. Ellsworth was a colonel in the Union Army, but he was wearing a grey uniform.
Most Americans have learned that during the Civil War the Union wore blue and the Confederacy wore grey uniforms. However in the early months of the war this was not a hard and fast rule, more like a suggestion. At the beginning of the Civil War the US Army consisted of three classes of soldiers. The first were the 16,000 regular soldiers who made up the army before the war. These men would have had their regular service uniforms which would have been blue. Then there were the volunteers who enlisted when the war began. While many would have been issued standard uniforms many other units designed their own uniforms which were unique to that regiment. Finally there were local militia companies and regiments who existed before the war and had their own uniforms, most of which were not standard US Army issue. The men of the 11th NY Infantry were of the 2nd category, personally recruited by Ellsworth from New York City firefighters. Ellsworth himself designed the uniform, and since he was part of the zouave fandom, he designed a zouave uniform. Zouaves were originally French light infantrymen stationed in North Africa who wore a unique type of uniform with a North African flair. Since people at the time thought the French were awesome many militaries copied French uniforms. Both the Union and Confederate standard uniform was based on the French pattern. People at the time thought zouaves were especially awesome, so in no time militaries around the Western world were creating their own zouave units. This included Spain, Britain, Italy, Turkey, Brazil, Poland, the United States, and the Confederacy. Ellsworth made his uniform grey most likely because his first command was as the drillmaster of a militia unit called the Rockford Greys, which also happened to be a zouave unit.
11th NY Volunteer Infantry, early war
Thus the early Union Army was a hodgpodge of different volunteer and militia units with their own unique uniforms. The Confederate Army had an even bigger problem with uniform standardization as it was an army created completely by scratch comprised entirely of militia with their own unique uniforms or volunteers. Many early Confederate soldiers didn’t even have uniforms and went into battle wearing civilian clothing.
The result was that on both side you had a wide variety of uniforms in a wide variety of styles and colors. There were Union soldiers wearing grey and Confederate soldiers wearing blue. There were soldiers wearing uniforms that were from the wrong century and they might have had time machines.
2nd New Hampshire Militia Regiment
The Amoskeag Veterans, a militia unit from New Hampshire
There were soldiers who wore kilts
79th New York Volunteer Infantry
There were soldiers who wore Prussian style pickelhaubs with a skull and crossbone on them
Palmetto Rifles, a militia unit from South Carolina
There were soldiers who fought in wars of independence in their home countries and wore the same uniform after immigrating to America.
39th New York Volunteer Regiment, a unit comprised of Italian immigrants, many of whom fought in the Italian Unification Wars.
Literally anything could go. If I find out tomorrow that there was a Union regiment who dressed up as Roman legionaries and a Confederate Regiment who dressed up as Greek hoplites and they fought each other in a small early war skirmish in Kentucky it would not shock me.
This uniform madness all culminated at the First Battle of Bull Run, AKA First Manassas, where the wide variety of uniforms resulted in chaos and confusion. According to Gen. William T. Sherman friendly fire incidents occurred during the battle due the confusion. In one incident, the 33rd Virginia Regiment stormed two Union artillery batteries without being fired upon because they were wearing blue uniforms.
After the Battle of Bull Run both sides began the mass issuance of standardized uniforms to end the confusion and streamline logistics. By 1862 most soldiers had standard issue uniforms. There were some exceptions, most notable were zouave units because zouaves were just the bee knees I’ll tell you what. However, even then Union and Confederate zouaves wore blue and grey respectively. Specialized units might wear special uniforms, for example Union sharpshooters wore green uniforms as an early form of camouflage. Often milita and volunteer regiments wore standard uniforms with unique accessories so that they could retain some uniqueness. For example the 79th NY Infantry continued to wear kilts and the 39th NY Infantry wore their wide brimmed Italian hats with ostrich feathers. The 2nd Wisconsin “Iron Brigade” wore the hardee hat as a distinction because they were an elite unit of shock troops. However for the most part, the uniforms in the Civil War became the same.

Rowdy Roddy Piper x Fem Reader- "I Have The Weirdest Boner Right Now"
During the early 1990's, the end of 1991 to be exact, the World Wrestling Federation was becoming surprisingly a bit more edgier.
And this was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before the Attitude era, way before.
There were moments like the Mountie giving the middle finger at Summerslam and hinting he might get raped in jail, Jake "The Snake" Roberts slapping Miss Elizabeth, the Berzerker threatening to kill and stab the Undertaker with his sword in the ring, Papa Shango making Bobby Heenan's head bleed, Shawn Michaels throwing Marty Jannetty through a barber shop window, Sgt. Slaughter burning the American flag and other moments.
It's been said that Vince McMahon wanted to start an edgier WWF era during the early 1990's, even Mick Foley acknowledged this in one of his books, but the World Wrestling Federation's steroid scandal of the early 90's ruined the chance of the WWF going into an edgier direction, and so the World Wrestling Federation became really childish by making wrestlers play garbage men, racecar drivers, plumbers, cowboys, teachers, hockey players, baseball players, ninjas, etc. and having little to no edgy content.
Does that sound familiar?
It's crazy how much wrestling history repeats itself.
Now, the World Wrestling Federation was pretty childish before the steroid scandal, what with the Berzerker playing a Viking, the Mountie playing a literal Canadian mountie, Tugboat being a fat guy in a sailor hat, but after the steroid scandal they really got childish.
The WWF going edgier in the early 1990's would've been rather perfect for that era, considering in the early 90's Andrew Dice Clay and Sam Kinison were popular, controversial comedians infamous for lewd comedy that was shocking and controversial even back then, 2 Live Crew were a popular and controversial hip hop group infamous for their obscene, pornographic shock value lyrics and imagery, gangsta rap was on the rise, "Married With Children" was a popular and raunchy sitcom with a lot of oversexualized women and sex jokes, grunge rock was becoming popular, Madonna was at her most oversexualized (and arguably most shocking) in the early 1990's, hair metal bands were objectifying women---some hair metal bands even were the bad boys of rock 'n' roll causing controversy like Guns N Roses and Motley Crue, and Geraldo Rivera and Morton Downey Jr. had infamous talk shows that were predecessors to "The Jerry Springer Show".
In early 1992, Rowdy Roddy Piper was about to have a match with someone, and this match as well as this moment was filmed and broadcast on television.
Before the match began, you were standing outside of the ring whereas Rowdy was standing in the ring wearing his signature kilt and T-shirt.
Rowdy's hair was long and he didn't have bangs dangling over his forehead, his bangs were swept on the side of his head.
Rowdy looks so good when he doesn't have bangs covering his forehead and you wanted him to look good during this particular moment.
You were the valet for his opponent, and before Rowdy could take his kilt off, he was standing and looking at you wearing a rather provocative outfit that showed quite a bit of cleavage.
You weren't even distracting him before the match, but you did look up at him.
You were a beautiful woman, and Rowdy was walking up to you to get a closer look.
As Rowdy gazed at you, especially your cleavage, he was getting rather hard underneath his kilt and trunks.
So much so, the camera zoomed in on the crotch area of his kilt to see if he had an erection poking through his kilt.
Erections don't point forward while they're hiding inside of kilts, but rather they're slung sideways.
Although, you really wanted a moment where Rowdy's boner was protruding outwards in his kilt, basically his erection is clearly visible and everyone can see it pointing and sticking out despite that it's covered by his kilt, like that massive erection scene in "Anchorman" where Will Ferrell/Ron Burgundy is looking at Christina Applegate.
Rowdy's erection was pointing and sticking out a bit under his kilt.
Many people in the audience were laughing, giggling and pointing to Rowdy's erection, some parents were even covering their kids eyes.
"Uh oh!" Jesse Ventura exclaimed. "Looks like his roddy's gettin' a little rowdy!"
Some people in the audience laughed at that, whereas others rolled their eyes.
"The match hasn't even started and she's already turnin' him on!" Gorilla Monsoon stated.
There's a reason why Rowdy kept his kilt on before he shed it off, for this boner gag.
After the bell rung, Rowdy was attacked by his opponent before he could even remove his kilt, although Rowdy eventually stripped his kilt off during the match.
His erection also faded away during the match due to not looking at you and being distracted over you.
Before the match began, you could've easily raised and lifted up Rowdy Roddy Piper's kilt and showed off his erection bulging under his trunks.
During the late 1990's, Scott Hall wore kilts in WCW sometimes.
While WCW was a rather kid friendly company, it did have some adult-like moments in it, and you would've loved to have given Scott Hall an erection in the ring before he takes his kilt off and his boner is sticking out through his kilt.
No doubt he would love that too.
Even though the WWF was getting a little edgier in 1991, during 1991, Rowdy Roddy Piper had this shaggy hair with bangs that he didn't look too good with it.

Kilts for Men: Redefining Masculinity and Style Online
Men's kilts have a long and rich history in Scotland and can be worn for formal occasions, Highland games, and other cultural events. But they are not just for Scotsmen anymore; many men worldwide have worn kilts as a fashion statement or a way to connect with their Celtic roots.
If you're thinking about getting a kilt, there are a few things you should consider to ensure you choose the perfect style. In this blog post, we'll review some of the most important factors to consider when selecting a kilt online.
How to Choose the Perfect Men’s Kilt
Type of kilt
Many kilts are available, each with unique features and histories. The most common styles include the traditional Scottish kilt, the Irish kilt, and utility kilts for men (popularized in the US). Scottish dresses are typically made of tartan fabric and have a pleated skirt that reaches to the knee. Irish kilts are often made of solid-colored wool and have a more fitted, tapered look. Utility kilts are made of canvas or other heavy-duty materials and have a more industrial look.
2. Fabric
Once you've decided on the type of kilt, you'll need to choose the fabric. Skirts are traditionally made of wool, but many materials, including cotton, denim, and PVC, are available now. Consider the climate where you'll wear the kilt and your style. Wool is warm and durable, while cotton is lightweight and breathable. Leather and PVC can provide a more edgy look.
3. Color and Pattern
Kilts for men come in a wide range of colors and patterns, from earthy tones to bright plaids. When selecting color and design, consider the occasion you'll wear the kilt. A subtle, neutral color may be more appropriate for a formal event, while a bold tartan may be appropriate for a casual gathering. Additionally, consider your style and what colors and patterns you like.
4. Size and Fit
One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a kilt is the size and fit. Skirts are typically worn high on the waist, just below the ribcage, and should fit snugly but comfortably. Make sure you get the right size by measuring your waist and hips and look for kilts with adjustable waistbands or other ways to change the fit. Additionally, consider the kilt's length; it should fall to just above the knee, with the pleats opening in the back.
5. Accessories
No kilt is complete without a few essential accessories. Sporran pouches are worn at the front of the dress and can carry small items like your phone or wallet. Ghillie brogues are traditional Scottish shoes often worn with kilts, while hose (knee-high socks) and flashes (decorative fabric strips) are worn. Consider which accessories to complete your kilt outfit.
Where to Buy the Best Men’s Kilt
Men's kilts online shopping carefully considers several elements, such as the kind of kilt, fabric, color and pattern, size and fit, and accessories. Spend time thinking about your selections and trying on several styles to discover the ideal kilt to make you feel and look your best. We advise visiting the Scot Kilt Store to purchase skirts for all occasions.

John Paul Jones is an American technicolored biographic adventure film from 1959.
Plot
On screen narration opens with a United States Navy officer telling new midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy the story of John Paul Jones.
In 1759, twelve-year old John Paul is forced to flee Scotland when he attacks an English officer trying to enforce English laws against bagpipe playing and wearing kilts, symbols of Scottish nationalism. Going to sea, John Paul serves on several ships, becoming an experienced navigator by age 17 and by 1773 becoming master of a ship in the British West Indies. A fight with a mutinous crew member results in the mutineer's death, but because of the sailor's family connections, the governor of Tobago advises Paul to leave and change his name. Paul adds a new surname, becoming "John Paul Jones," and goes to visit a brother who lives in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Jones' brother has recently died, and he learns that he is to inherit his brother's estate, which includes two enslaved children, named Scipio and Cato, who are about to sold in the slave market. Jones, who in an earlier scene had expressed his hatred of the slave trade, frees the boys, who continue to work with him alongside his late brother's clerk, Peter Wooley. Jones also retains the services of his brother's attorney, the rising politician Patrick Henry,to assist in business matters. Jones and Henry share resentment of British rule in the American colonies, but Jones finds himself torn between their friendship and his interest in Henry's love interest, Dorothea Danders.
Jones' new love interest, Aimee de Telleson,is a lady in waiting to Marie Antoinette and, with Franklin's help, they persuade King Louis XVI to build a new ship for Jones, which will fly under the American flag with the name Bonhomme Richard. At sea, Jones engages in battle with the British ship Serapis. Though his ship is heavily damaged, Jones continues to fight on, telling British Captain Pearson, "I have not yet begun to fight!" Jones and his men overpower the British and seize control of the Serapis even while his own ship sinks.

Nobody is going to seriously harass you and record it. I’d know they’re just messing around. If you rub someones facial hair that you don’t know I think a boob grab is pretty acceptable in return. Guy or girl lol. Don’t touch me if you don’t want to be touched back. And no Nancy you wouldn’t break my teeth. Lol, but if you want to touch my beard you can just ask. And I don’t expect to touch your boobs in return unless you want me to. But somehow I doubt it lol. All in fun have a good one. Ok so if a guy walked up to her and started rubbing and caressing her hair, she would most likely 1. Punch them, 2. Yell sexual harassment and 3. press charges but because she’s a woman, she thinks it is ok. Thinking back only a few seasons, and the only guy wearing a skirt during Fashion Week. This month in Paris. With the extreme heat in Paris (temps in the 90s), a T-shirt would definitely be a cooler option than skinny pants. Roc Pride 2017 draws thousands to parade, festival
By Susan Jordan
“Happy Pride” echoed down the length of Park Ave. on July 15, when 12,000 people cheered on the Pride Parade. With 130 units, it was the largest in Rochester Pride history. At least 10,000 people attended the two days of the Pride Festival, also the biggest attendance ever.
Among those marching were LGBTQ-and-ally-owned businesses, LGBTQ community groups, welcoming and affirming churches, political figures including Congresswoman Louise Slaughter and NYS Assembly member Harry Bronson, and organizations like Moms Demand Action on Gun Control, Pit Rescue, Roc City Roller Derby, East Coast Two Spirit Society (Native American LGBTQ group) and the AFL-CIO.
The Parade units which won awards included Ruby Slipper award, for most imaginative depiction of annual parade theme by a walking unit: Brighton GSA; Community award, for best Not-for-profit organization walking unit to exhibit LGBTQ Pride: GVA United Church of Christ Churches; Rainbow award, for best for-profit float to exhibit LGBTQ Pride: Boyz Night Out; Stonewall award, for best not-for-profit organization float of annual parade theme: Rochester SAGE; Muther’s Favorite award, best float to incorporate annual parade theme: 140 Alex Bar and Grill.
Roc Pride unites the LGBT community in love
By Lissandra Dyer
With themes of free love to represent the community and flowers to represent the Flower City, Pride-goers experienced life free to be their authentic selves at ROC Pride’s “Summer of Love” on July 15 and 16.
Australian DJ Ray Isaac, musical guest at the ROC Pride Festival, wrote “We Stand United” to build strength for the community after the Orlando tragedy. Isaac joined Rochester’s LGBTQ community at Cobbs Park Hill on July 15 to sing pop hits and “We Stand United.”
More than a year has passed after the tragedy that befell Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Fla. on June 12, 2016. But the LGBT community still comes out to events like Rochester’s “Summer of Love” Pride Festival to openly be themselves and to connect with each other.
Isaac’s song is about recovery and moving past awful events together as a community. The song’s chorus said, “Sending Prayers of Hope/ We’re stronger than what they know/ We Stand United.”
Before Isaac started the song, he handed out streamers for the audience to wave while he performed.
Christa, 41, of Medina, said that Pride to her means “Being together, happy.” She and her partner Melissa traveled from Medina to experience Pride together with their child.
The Festival included food trucks offering options from empanadas to poutine. Booths sold pride flags for gay, trans, bisexual, and asexual community members, and the main stage held musical guests and drag performances. More performances, including a presentation for the Deaf community, took place on the Garden stage.
Holly, 24, of Rochester, marched with drag king troupe Boyz Night Out in the pride parade before the festival. Holly spent the pride festival with her dog, part mini-pincher, part chihuahua named Cocoa. He was sporting a gay flag as a cape. Holly said Pride to her means being able to have fun and “being able to live how you want.”
Another Rochester resident, Kabarr Liz, 27, was clad in drag makeup and enjoyed the music at the main stage. She said that Pride is “celebrating the fact that we’re able to be open.” The festival was her favorite Pride event.
Frank, 43, of Rochester, and his husband Michael enjoyed their first Pride event this year at the Festival. Together these Rochester Institute of Technology alums walked the grounds holding hands and wearing “Utilikilts,” which were kilts with pockets.
Pride opening ceremony welcomes dissenting voices
By Roy Hamlin
The slightly overcast skies the evening of July 14 couldn't withstand the strength of the rainbow, as the Roc Pride 2017 Opening Ceremony started a weekend of celebration. Speakers included Mayor Lovely Warren and City Council member Matt Haag. The Queers Against Cops group held a protest across Culver Rd. from Cobbs Hill Park, site of the ceremony.
With some adjustments ongoing to a slightly faltering sound system, the Ceremony began in a moving way with the arrival of 45 Ride for Pride bicyclists, in a coordinated mini-parade of rainbow colored tees. Craig and Kelly Ronald, who sported a pair of white tee shirts in the center of the human rainbow, explained the significance of their white shirts as representing the many who can't show their "true colors" yet.
Alliance Executive Director Scott Fearing added his personal welcome, the first of many speakers to point out the apt presence of the protesters, given this year's Pride theme of the Summer of Love and the spirit of the ‘60s, which also was marked by protests and counter demonstrations. Fearing noted that the event was in "perfect shape" to provide an opportunity for believers to not only encourage peaceful protest, but to engage in dialogue, rather than deride and dismiss, another segment of a shared community.
Sashes were presented to Grand Marshal Wanda Martinez-Johncox and Honorary Grand Marshals ImageOut (represented by founder Larry Champoux) and the NYCLU (represented by Interim Director Iman Abid).
Queers Against Cops disrupted the ceremony, stating on their website that they are “tired of police presence at LGBTQ events and the capitalization of queer and trans identities.”
As the Rochester Gay Men’s Chorus began their performance of Queen's "Break Free" by John Deacon, and then their signature number, Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water", the protesters' boomboxes, megaphones, and protest chanting were respectfully silenced. Thanks to a common commitment to diversity, the dividing fence of intentions, albeit briefly, had indeed become a "bridge over troubled water”.

Ask how to customize this kilt
How to measure yourself
Waist - Our kilts are made to fit like a pair of cargo shorts. They will adjust approximately 5-7 inches from the waist measurement you provide. You want to measure with a measuring tape around where you normally have pants hang along your hip, and either over your belly or under it, which ever you prefer. Be sure to measure against your skin and not over clothing. If you measure over clothing it will make the kilt too loose and the measurements will be inaccurate. With the proper measurements you will only have to adjust the apron when you first try it on, and only minimal adjustments after that if you gain or lose weight. The great thing about this design is that you can adjust your kilt and it will never look different in appearance. The kilt will always look centered, level and well-fit.
Hip - Measuring around the hip area will help keep the kilt from being too snug around your hips, rear, and the Jewels. Length - This measurement is commonly done for utility kilts by kneeling. You want to take the measurement from the side of your hip. Measure from where the top of your jeans would be to the floor. This typically makes the kilt length to about mid knee.

Horseback Wrestling. Bone Tossing. Dead Goat Polo. Let the Nomad Games Begin!
By Neil MacFarquhar, NY Times, Sept. 15, 2018
CHOLPON-ATA, Kyrgyzstan--The American team that played a brutal version of polo at the World Nomad Games does not expect the sport to get picked up by the Olympics any time soon.
Why not?
“We use a dead goat,” said Scott A. Zimmerman, a team co-captain.
The game of kok-boru, with its headless goat carcass, was the main attraction at the weeklong international sports competition held this month in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan.
Other highlights included bone tossing, hunting with eagles and 17 types of wrestling, including bare-chested horseback wrestling, where the weaker competitor often clings desperately to the animal’s head as spectators roar in anticipation of him hitting the dirt.
The organizers hope to resurrect nomadic traditions, especially those of Central Asia, whose cultures were pushed toward extinction by decades of Soviet collectivization and then globalization.
While many top-flight athletes competed, qualifying for an event was easy: Basically anybody who signed up online could play. The bulk of the Czech Republic delegation, for example, was a group of male friends who fished around for an easy sport.
They discovered ordo, or bone tossing, which involves eight players using a chunk of cow bone to dislodge two-inch pieces of sheep bone from a large dirt circle. (It’s a lot harder than it sounds.) They could not, however, find the right bone bits in the Czech Republic with which to practice.
So how did they learn to play? They just thought about it, mostly, admitted the Czechs, who went home without any medals.
The outdoor events took place in two stunning venues--a hippodrome built for the Games on a high-altitude saline lake surrounded by the jagged peaks of the Tian Shan mountain range, and the vast meadows of a sweeping mountain gorge, where some 1,000 yurts were erected.
With archers clopping by on horses, and the smokey aroma of grilling meat, the meadow site evoked a nomadic encampment from a bygone era.
After 72 years spent under Communist domination--and more than two decades since the collapse of the Soviet Union--Kyrgyzstan and its neighbors are still trying to define themselves.
“We want to revive our historical identity,” said Kanat Amankulov, Kyrgyzstan’s minister for youth and sports.
The Games also seek to create a kind of Brand Kyrgyzstan, attracting tourists to an impoverished, landlocked, predominantly Muslim nation of about six million people.
The emphasis on nomadic traditions casts Kyrgyzstan as part of a grander Turkic civilization, and perhaps equally important, helps counter the growing strength here of the intolerant Wahhabi strain of Islam imported by clerics educated in Saudi Arabia.
The Games started on a modest scale in 2014 when about 600 athletes from 19 countries took part. The third edition of the biannual event attracted 1,976 competitors, representing 74 countries.
The elaborate opening ceremony, with 1,500 dancers and other performers, retold the myth of creation from the nomad perspective. First came primordial earth, then man, horses, yurts and hence nomads--who gave rise to the rest of us. The performance rocked the sold-out 10,000-seat arena.
Team uniforms, on display at the parade of competitors, ran from the professional to the improvised. The Germans wore black sweatsuits with a few pairs of lederhosen thrown in for an ancestral touch, while the Pakistanis sported matching green vests and scarves.
Others teams looked as if they had wandered in from the nearest cafe; the man carrying the flag of Estonia wore jeans and a white T-shirt.
The United States fielded more than 50 participants, many of them Peace Corps volunteers working in Kyrgyzstan. The American kok-boru team, some waving their own cowboy hats, brandished the flag of Wyoming, home to 8 of 10 players.
The Games are somewhat controversial in Kyrgyzstan. Critics argue the money to produce them would be better spent on much-needed development like schools. Yet local participants reveled in the events.
As a circus performer, Aida Akmatova, 32, developed her signature trick of shooting a bow and arrow with her feet. At the Games, she competed in horseback archery.
“This is not just another performance, but a key event in my life,” she said. “I can help pass down our culture, our traditions.”
The rest of the world has been catching on to the appeal of the competition.
In 2016, the lone guest of honor was Steven Seagal, the former Hollywood action star. This year high-profile guests included President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey and Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary.
While the number of Western visitors remains relatively small, the Games attracted Kyrgyz from around the country, including Ulan Subanov, 27, an accountant, from Bishkek, the capital, who came to watch the kok-boru contests, ultimately won by his homeland.
“This is the most dangerous game in the whole world, you have to be fearless to play it,” Mr. Subanov said. “It is much more dangerous than American football.”
The rough, physically demanding game once served as the Kyrgyz equivalent of West Point, training warriors for the battlefield.
All eight players try to scoop up an 80-pound goat carcass off the dirt. Every effort provokes a hellacious, rugby-like scrum on horseback, with whips cracking and hooves pounding.
Any player who manages to wrest the carcass away gallops downfield to fling it into an elevated goal about the size of a kiddie pool.
The United States versus Russia was one of the first kok-boru matches. Given that the Russian players were of Kyrgyz origin, an American victory would have surpassed the upset of the “Miracle on Ice” hockey win at the 1980 Olympics.
The American players, most in their first game ever, struggled, with the announcer bellowing, “Whoooops!” every time one of them dropped the carcass.
At one point an American player, Ladd Howell, recruited because of his experience wrangling rodeo calves, broke away from the massed riders and galloped toward the goal. He threw the beast into the goal with such force that he fell in after it, provoking a roar of laughter from the stands.
While the game disturbs many animal-rights activists, Garret J. Edington, a co-captain of the American side, said the team was not there to challenge local traditions. “It is part of the culture that we are here to experience,” he said, adding that the winning team gets to eat the goat.
The British ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Robin Ord-Smith, was a bit flummoxed about how his country could participate in the Games. “We don’t really do nomads,” he said. Then, an inspiration: Scotsmen!
Oddball sports involving trials of strength, skill and dexterity? Check. Exotic national dress? Check. Tribes? Clans! So he imported four men in kilts for an exhibition display of Highland games including the caber toss, which involves throwing the equivalent of a telephone poll end over end.
While there’s no sign the caber toss will join the roster of official sports any time soon, the Games are expanding beyond Kyrgyzstan’s borders. Turkey will host the 2020 version.
“In a globalized world, people forget their cultures, what sets them apart,” said Mr. Subanov, the visiting accountant. “It is more interesting to live in a world with different nations, different cultures. It would not be good for the whole world to become New York.”
