Atlantis Expedition: Science Division Departments

"Many of the scientists on Atlantis are organised into departments, each with their own department head. Dr. Rodney McKay was head of the Science and Research Division which most likely meant he was in charge of all of the science departments. Dr. Radek Zelenka was also the head of his own department. The various science departments on Atlantis are:

As I'm working my way through worldbuilding headcanons on the expedition, I figured I ought to start with the science division first. Above is my starting point: the canonical information at hand, to flesh out and give it some real-world reliability.

When I looked at it again, I realized it was, to put it politely, ill-thought-out crap that was only looked upon when the writers needed some random scientist around for episode material.

So, what considerations would an expedition like this actually need to take into account when hiring people?

At the very bare bones of it is "how many people can I fit through a wormhole in twenty or twenty-five minutes, plus supplies?". I went back and forth, prevaricated for a bit, and settled on 200 people if you really want to hoof it.

(Why 20-25 minutes? It's SGC's first stable-ish wormhole to another galaxy that's powered by a ZPM. They don't even know how much of a success that would be, or if they're just shoving people into a glorified shredder. Gotta pick and choose who you're maybe putting through the billion-dollar shredder. Y'know. Just in case.)

My initial rough estimations were about an even split between scientific and military personnel, which I kept on hand as napkin math to sanity check myself. This would be approximately 150 scientists.

What departments would there be, and how would it be divided? Who makes the priorities, and why?

The canon data is a mess, and as I worked through things, canon kept getting folded and refolded into different configurations because there's two competing priorities: the IOA/SGC, and Rodney's approach to pragmatism.

What was everyone expecting to see on the other side of that wormhole? Definitely not a city ship sunk into the ground of an ocean, and definitely not isolated from others (the Athosians were an unexpected godsend that kicked off the reason to have a plot in the first place). Whatever the IOA or SGC had in mind will quickly get thrown out the window, but needs must, and the departments were likely arranged long before the shipping manifest was decided.

I poked around the uniforms, because everyone is colour-coded, and there's five sections:

> Red (civilian, leader) - Worn by Dr. Elizabeth Weir, Teyla Emmagan, Colonel Samantha Carter and Richard Woolsey.

> Blue/dark blue or purple (scientist) - Worn by Dr. Meredith Rodney McKay and Dr. Radek Zelenka.

> Yellow (medical) - Worn by Dr. Carson Beckett and Dr. Jennifer Keller.

> Black (military) - Worn by Lt. Colonel John Sheppard and Major Evan Lorne.

> Green (technician) - Worn by Chuck and Amelia Banks.

This information is listed in both the "List of Atlantis personnel" and "Atlantis expedition uniform" pages on SGCommand.

Thus far that gets me two and a half departments in my hand: Scientist, Medical, and Technician (that's the half).

What would the SGC and IOA want the expedition to prioritize? Technology, and lots of it. This means that, probably, there's going to be more engineers than you can shake a stick at, and not a lot of pure sciences. Remember, it cost money to fire up the gate, and flinging people into another galaxy is an unfathomable amount of (international, at this point) taxpayer funds. You're going to want as much applied science as possible, and as much overlap in disciplines as possible.

(Unfortunately this does leave little room for error, so anyone that dies is capable of leaving a hole in potential research.)

Therefore, how would a top-down order of technological research look like? My assumption was this:

> Engineering of the city of Atlantis itself

 » ZPMs, auxiliary and/or complementary power sources

 » Materials and material manufacturing

 » Design specs of different technologies (jumpers, yes, but also anti-grav, shields, climate controls)

> Biological sciences

 » ATA gene therapies

 » Whatever the Ancients were working on regarding ascension

  ⇛ Helpful with the Ori once Atlantis is informed of that issue

To wit, neither addendum on the biological sciences bullet point is pertinent at the time of department formation, as Carson invented the ATA gene therapy after arriving in Atlantis, and the Ori weren't an issue for a similar reason.

Ergo, all non-biological engineering fields would have had higher billing, and thus more of them hired. The only exception would be medical, and I'm sure the SGC had the forethought to bully the IOA into its relevancy and make sure that department was as fully-stocked as they could manage.

Now what about practical considerations? Plans are nice and all, but rarely survive contact with reality, so some adjustment might be needed. This, I believe, the SGC considered, given their own history of needing to rapidly adjust on the fly.

Rodney, as Chief Science Officer (CSO), would be the one to not only make these kinds of decisions, but also to listen to the head of the expedition as to what needed to be prioritized. As the show has demonstrated, there can be a significant amount of shuffling around of employees based on the needs of a minute, and hour, a week, a month - for an indefinite amount of time? Basics are what gets the job done.

So what things would Rodney need to consider, or be directed to consider by Elizabeth?

Anyway.

While Rodney's spending his days with Benny Hill music playing in the background trying to get all of those priorities done on top of actually delegating work and doing whatever else Elizabeth (and John) want him to do, other people actually need to have some work to get done. So what are they doing?

It depends on who already does what, frankly. So in the above combined interests (amount of people that can fit through an intergalactic wormhole, competing IOA/SGC interests, realities of living in Atlantis), I'm proposing this set-up (commentary included):

Medical Sciences Department

Head: Carson Beckett (later, Jennifer Keller, later, whomever)

Contains: Surgery, psychiatry, physical therapy

Function: Maintaining health of expedition members

Examples of function: surgeries, medical prescriptions, recuperation from injuries, mental stability

Personnel quantity: 1 (Head) + 10 (surgical team) + 5 (nurses) + 1 (psych) + 1 (phys. therapy) + 1 (anesthesiologist) = 19 total

A/N: Nurses have training in medications and physical therapy, surgical team also doubles as general practitioners.

Life Sciences Department

Head: OC

Contains: Earth biologists, bio- & biochemical engineers, astro/xeno-biologists, botany, environmental chemistry, zoology, microbiology

Function: Auxiliary to Medical Department needs

Examples of function: pharmaceutical synthesis, analysis of unknown species, biological database creation, gene therapies (pharmaceutical adjacent)

Personnel quantity: 1 (Head) + 2 (Earth biologists) + 2 (bioE & biochemE) + 1 (astro/xenobio) + 1 (botany) + 1 (envchem) + 1 (zoo) + 2 (microbio) = 11

A/N: Both biologists also have training/specialization in genetics/gene mapping (assists both Carson and Katie), some input in requesting gate missions based on in-house needs.

Field Sciences Department

Head: OC

Contains: Linguistics, historical geography, cartography, ethnography, sociology, oceanography, hydrology, atmospheric physics, planetary physics

Function: Research pool for gate teams and any assigned missions

Examples of function: Preservation of refugee cultures, scouting for trade planets, analysis of back-up sites for establishment

Personnel quantity: 1 (Head) + 3 (linguistics) + 1 (histgeo) + 1 (cart) + 1 (ethno) + 1 (socio) + 1 (oceano) + 1 (hydro) + 1 (atmophys) + 1 (planphys) = 12

A/N: SGC duplicate all shoved into one department, mostly ignored in-house but their brains are picked for background dossiers when it comes to mission planning. Linguists trained in xenolinguistics, from the SGC, can cover the various anthro fields if necessary, also various training in structural linguistics. Main scientist pulls for gate team assignments, if something critical isn't needed (i.e. Ancient technology).

Applied Sciences Department

Head: Rodney McKay (or perhaps Radek Zelenka?)

Contains: Electrical/technical engineering, nuclear physics, civil engineering, astrophysics, laser/optical, chemical engineering

Function: Study, synthesis, and adaptations of Ancient technology

Examples of function: ZPM analysis with intent to duplicate, experimental duplications of Ancient technology materials, study of gate physics and construction with intent to duplicate, study and experimental duplication of other Ancient technologies (i.e. hyperdrives, cloaks, weapons, etc)

Personnel quantity: 1 (Head) + 3 (electreng) + 6 (techeng/gate techs) + 1 (nucphys) + 1 (astrophy) + 1 (LZ/opt) +  3 (chemeng) = 16

A/N: The people Rodney are yelling at most often, because mistakes mean kablooey. Also a lot of the people running around in an emergency. 1 nuclear physicist because Rodney pulls a lot of intellectual weight, and same with the astrophysicist and laser/optical person (mostly they're there as on-paper hires and back-ups/assistants for him for his own research).

Gate Technicians

Head: ??? Joint custody

Contains: Gate technicians

Functions: Auxiliary to Applied Sciences Department, interacts with the gate and the gate only

Examples of function: dialing, searching database for addresses, maintaining mission logs and planets visited, basic repair and maintenance of the gate, technical drawings as required by others

Personnel quantity: Chuck, idk +5 for full shift overlaps = 6 total (listed in Applied Sciences department as techeng/gate techs)

A/N: Technically nerds but are active duty, probably loans from SGC (maybe also Russia because of the DHD debacle?).

Gate technicians are, although folded into the Applied Sciences department, listed separately in order to better articulate their duties (and the fact that they get the green shirts). Shout-out to @spurious for enabling the idea that gate techs would do technical drawings 😁

Sum Total of Science Division Personnel

Medical: 19

Life Sciences: 11

Field Sciences: 12

Applied Sciences: 16

Total total: 19 + 11 + 12 + 16 = 58

This isn't anywhere close to my initial estimate of 150, but I think it adequately covers all the preconceived and actual responsibilities that the science division would need to handle in the expedition. Possibly I might update these numbers as I develop this headcanon further, but that would end up in a new post.

The sun was a comfort on her skin as Teyla lay back in her chair, relaxing for the first time in what felt like ages, soaking in the warmth. 

Weeks of rain and fog had shrouded Atlantis, her team's dour mood not helped by an overlong mission to P3S-403 where the town they visited was still held in the depths of winter. Returning to a break in the weather and warmer temperatures was most appreciated. Many of the city's residents had journeyed to the nearest section of the mainland to make the most of it.

Teyla shifted on the towel she'd spread over the chair John called a "deck chair" and let the balmy breeze carry the distant sounds of her teammates and fellow citizens of Atlantis past her. Ronon and John were having some sort of debate about surfing in between their actual surfing. Rodney was discussing, somewhat stridently, with Carson the potential venomous properties of a creature he'd found. Farther down the beach, Doctors Cole and Zelenka were talking and fishing, along with Major Lorne and Lieutenant Rivers. Teyla, Amelia, and Marie had been swimming earlier- Teyla amused by the Earth tradition of swimming while clothed in a bikini- and had now taken over a trio of the deck chairs that had been set out, relaxing after their exertion. Teyla was comfortable, by her hand was a drink Amelia called a tequila sunrise, and she was warm and drowsy.

The warmth shining down on her suddenly went cold and dark. Teyla cracked open an eye with a frown. 

Todd was looming over her, scowling. 

"You are blocking the sun," she informed him. 

His scowl deepened. "If you do not control your expedition leader, I may be forced to take drastic action." 

Teyla blinked. She was slightly intrigued, but not enough to actually get up from her comfortable seat. "That is not a good reason to block my sunlight," she retorted. 

Todd grumbled under his breath but shifted to the side. Amelia made a sound of wordless protest, as he was now blocking the sun from reaching her. Teyla lowered her sunglasses to raise an eyebrow at Todd. 

He snarled, softly, and dropped into a crouch beside her. He looked around, as if feeling hunted. 

Teyla found herself now curious in spite of herself. "What is the problem with Mister Woolsey?"

"He is insisting that I accept a garland of foul-smelling leaves in recognition of the accord between our peoples." 

Teyla had the garland of leaves and flowers that Woolsey had given her currently wound around her head. "Such as this?" she asked, touching her crown. 

Todd narrowed his eyes and inhaled. "Yes," he admitted. "Though yours does not smell quite so terrible." The sensory pits near his nose fluttered. "The scent is actually not unpleasant when combined with your own." 

Teyla smirked. "So complimentary. He must have you quite unsettled." 

Todd scowled at her grumpily, and ducked down further behind her chair as Mister Woolsey walked past them and down to an area where several people were grilling and cooking. 

Teyla rolled her eyes. "There is a very simple way to get him to stop," she observed. 

"And what is that?" Todd asked haughtily.  

"To accept the garland from him of course. Perhaps then he would leave you alone."

Todd made a desperate, wounded sound deep in his throat. 

Teyla sat up, no longer able to relax. "You wouldn't have to keep it if it smells so terrible," she observed. 

Todd sighed. He was sitting on the ground behind her chair now, as deep in shadow as he could get. His eyes were narrowed as he peered up at her. "I could not accept such a token and then discard it." He looked away, uneasy, as if the confession revealed more than he wished.

Teyla softened. “Come then.” She stood from her chair and knotted the towel around her waist, its thin material wafting around her legs like a skirt. She took her drink in her hand and walked past the chairs, making her way along the rocky ridge where they had been soaking in the sun and up to a path that led under the cover of nearby trees. 

Todd followed her eagerly, and when her bare feet stepping on broken branches and seed pods from the trees made her hiss and stumble, he offered his left hand to help her balance. 

She didn’t thank him, but said, “The trail opens up again further ahead.” And even as she spoke the rocky trail they followed became covered with loose sand. The trees to their right were only small specimens now, their roots twisting through the sand as the ground in that direction sloped away down to the water in a long smooth line. Teyla's feet sank into the sand; it was hot on the top, where the sun hit, but cooler and moist underneath when she dug her feet in. 

The trail continued along the high rocky ridge, but below them the sandy slope led to a small cove, and Teyla made her way down the side of the dune to where the sand was level on the water's shoreline. The sand here, and the rolling in of the waves, was undisturbed by any others, and only the distant sight of surfers and swimmers, and the occasional shouts from her friends and coworkers, prevented the cove from being entirely private.

Teyla arranged her towel-skirt beneath her and sat down, sipping her drink.  "I hope you did not get too much sand in your boots descending the dune," she said with more amusement than sympathy to Todd.

He hummed thoughtfully, pulling off one boot and tipping it upside down to pour out what was definitely a large amount of sand. "Your plea appears to have been ignored," he observed. 

Teyla laughed. "You are not exactly dressed to enjoy a day at the beach. Why did you come?" 

His eyes rested on her. "Because you invited me." He cocked his head. "Why did you invite me?" 

"To see if you would come," she admitted. "And here you are." She looked at him levelly, her sunglasses sliding down her nose so that she could look at him over the top of their dark lenses. 

"Well, my queen commanded my presence." He smirked. "How could I do anything other than attend her whim?" 

Teyla snorted. 

Todd's smirk spread, and he sat down beside her in the sand. 

"That will not help prevent you from getting sand in your boots," Teyla warned him.

"It seems an attempt to separate the sand from my person is doomed," Todd replied. He gazed back at her, amused despite any discomfort.

"I don't suppose Wraith have beach clothes," Teyla observed. 

Todd huffed and said wryly, "That would be accurate." He rubbed rough grains of sand between the pads of his fingers sadly. "Though it is unfortunate as well. Our normal attire does not do well in such an environment." 

Teyla leaned back on one arm, braced behind her against the sand, and held her drink in her other hand, rolling the ice inside so that it clicked against the sides of the glass. "You could adopt a popular tradition and wear nothing at all," she suggested.  

Todd drew himself up as if offended at the suggestion, but his smile grew sly and he leaned back on his left hand, mirroring Teyla's posture. "Would that please you?" 

"Me?" Teyla held her drink against her cheek, her skin feeling quite warm against the glass's icy surface. "We were discussing your comfort." 

"I am quite comfortable," he replied, grinning at her. 

"Oh? Well, if we’ve exhausted that topic and there’s nothing else to discuss, maybe it's time for a swim." She raised an eyebrow at him. "Are you planning on swimming?" 

"I'll have you know Wraith are excellent swimmers."

"I am certain," Teyla replied with false sincerity. "Though I feel that that your normal aura of threat would be difficult for you to maintain with your apparel sopping wet and squeaking with every step."

Todd threw back his head and laughed. "What is it you say, touché? I will concede your point. As you've won, I suppose I must divest myself of an article of clothing?"

I believe you are thinking of poker," Teyla observed.

"Am I?" Todd affected surprise. "Hmm. So, then you agree I don't owe you a forfeit?" 

"I didn't say that." Teyla's eyes shone. "Perhaps you should double the forfeit, as you confused the stakes."

Todd laid a hand to his chest as if wounded by her remark. "I? Confused? I am quite certain that it was you who mentioned the wrong game."

Teyla blinked in surprise. "Are you suggesting I should be the one to take off my clothes?"

"If that is what you wish, my queen," Todd agreed eagerly. 

Stymied, Teyla set her drink on the ground. She stood up, her skirt clutched around her. Then she released the material and it fluttered to the ground. "I am going swimming," she stated. 

"As you say, my queen." Todd cocked his head. "Though, surely it is dangerous to swim alone."

It's dangerous to swim with Wraith," she retorted. "Especially one who will not admit when they have lost."

Very well." Todd pulled off his other boot, wiggling his toes in the sand while making a face. He stood, undoing his coat as he moved to let it fall from his arms. He had a sleeveless shirt of a thin material that he wore under it; Teyla was certainly not watching the way it clung to his muscles. He continued, pulling the shirt over his head and pulling his long legs free of his long, tight leather pants, under which he wore nothing at all. 

"Am I now properly attired for swimming?" he asked her innocently, then affected a deep concern. "Though I heard one of the others mention sunburn and I wondered if I should be concerned. I have not bared so much skin in a long time."

Teyla took off her sunglasses, tossing them down on her towel, and then looked him up and down. Mostly down. She met his eyes. "It's not that much," she assured him. "I wouldn't worry."

Todd laughed easily again. He moved past her and into the water first, moving like a creature entirely comfortable with that environment.

Teyla huffed a small sigh of annoyance to hide her smile and focused on swimming. The water was warmer near the beach where it was only as shallow as her ankles, but quickly became cold when it was deep enough to swim in. She swam out to the mouth of the cove, about 200 yards, to where she could see the surfers quite well beyond the outcropping that set apart this cove. She paused there and her feet, treading under the water, struck sand. She set both feet down and found herself standing on a sandbar, the water only coming up to her collarbone. 

She'd seen no sign of Todd since entering the water, but, once she stopped, he surfaced near her. The droplets of water on his skin caught the sunlight, shining like jewels. He turned toward her grinning. 

"Are you enjoying your swim?" he purred, the sound warming her in a way that should not have been possible.

"The view was excellent, until recently," she replied. 

He caught the amusement in her expression and his grin widened in response. He lifted his hands out of the water to display a fistful of shells of a familiar bivalve in his left hand. "I have heard these are quite tasty." 

Teyla reached out to take them from him, examining the shells. 

Todd stood up on the sand bar, looming over her as he stepped close. His eyes flashed, without any aid from the sunlight. "It is said they are prized for their amorous properties." He grinned.

Teyla handed the shells back to him. His smile faded, though he did not let any true disappointment show.

"Take them back to the beach," Teyla said. "We can eat them there." She met his eyes, then looked away as if indifferent. "I would like to enjoy them while finishing my drink."

He grinned again. "Yes, my queen." The words were teasing, but his manner was eager. He dove back into the water and swam a circle around her before vanishing into the darkness of the ocean.

When he couldn't see, Teyla smirked. She dove back into the water as well, headed for the beach.

002. Ronon Dex

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:

I want Ronon to finish grieving Sateda and let the past go so he can move forward and start to rebuild with the survivors. Athos/Sateda survivors band together and form a new society that is stronger, and combines all of the best parts of both sides.

my OTP:

I love the idea of Melena being alive, and I love the bits of Jennifer/Ronon we got, and so I'm here for them in season 4, hate them after season 5 most of the time. I do have a soft spot for McDex, and then of course, I love OT4 a whole lot.

my cross over ship:

So, niche here. But one of my fav series has a character named Trace Thakur who is a super fucking awesome space marine who kicks ass and doesn't take names and I think she and Ronon could get along super fucking well.

a headcanon fact:

Ronon is like Daniel. he likes books, history and is fantastic at languages and he lies to Woolsey about not being good at writing bc he just doesn't want to.

How I feel about this character:

I love him, I hate what they did to Ford but I also am fine with it bc if Ford was around then we wouldn't have had Ronon and I like the dynamic shift he brought to AR-1

All the people I ship romantically with this character:

Rodney, John, Teyla, OT4, Evan, Jennifer, Amelia even bc lets be real, meeting when u round house kick someone is the face is epic.

My non-romantic OTP for this character:

Carson and Ronon bond over losing everything but still being alive.

My unpopular opinion about this character:

He's usually right and people need to listen to him more. And asking him for peace when he grew up under the shadow of the wraith and lost so much from him is just really weird to me. Asking survivors to forgive the people who killed them puts an emotional burden on the survivor that should never be there.

Another day, more My Policeman set pics of Harry in another vintage look (and little hair clippys for between shots!), and of him leaving set in a ‘Verdi’ footie jumper (we’ve seen him in that one before) and “that shade of blue” checkered Vans, what a bluegreener jeez. He’s also got an orange phone case now which I didn’t think much about but people seem real excited so okay, orange is the new pink I guess. Niall and Amelia were seen again, two days in a row now! A fan shared their pics of them- highlight is definitely the one where Amelia has her hand on his butt, how jealous are the Niall girls out there? And Louis liked a Josh Devine 1D throwback post. Every time Louis likes a throwback post I remember when that ‘today in 1D history’ account tried to quit and Louis was like oh no I love this account :( and they were like welp fuck my life never mind I guess I won’t quit after all… ever... and it makes me laugh every time. And the account is still up to this day!!

It wouldn't be right to do a redux on SG1 without doing the same for SGA so here is the Atlantis version of the post about the things I like and things I don't like.  Probably not as long seeing as how I have literally half the material, but we'll see. I like: -Literally every word that comes out of Rodney's mouth.  I don't know if they have a dedicated writer who does nothing but comes up with things for him to say suitable to every occasion, but it is a sheer delight to listen to David Hewlett.  Practically every scene in Grace Under Pressure where he's basically talking to himself or hallucination Sam is pure pure gold.  His new whale friend! -Carson's accent, oh, I could just listen to it all day long.  It's such joy to listen to Carson talk as well.  He's not that old, but he calls everyone son and it's so adorable. -Tao of Rodney.  I probably would have made a separate post about it if Sunday hadn't made me so upset.  This episode made me cry and just...when Rodney starts trying to do nice things for people and actually apologizes to Zelenka and the Ronon hug!  Ugh, it's amazing -The way Radek talks to himself in Czech, especially when annoyed with Rodney -How we learn little things about Lorne, like him being a painter or that he sleepwalks -John and Elizabeth being possessed and fighting each other.  Who doesn't like a good possession episode?  Cadman/Rodney ftw, as well. -Woolsey taking over for Sam.  I was always going to be predisposed to liking him since I love Robert Picardo so much.  I liked that even though he was an antagonist when he first originated on SG1, he was a straight shooter and since I knew he was going to be on SGA, I figured he would straighten out even more, and they did a really good job of balancing the by the book guy with the living in the last frontier guy. -The city itself, it's really pretty and very cool, and has endless possibilities.  It flies! -David Hewlett's acting in the Shrine.  That opening video with him, I was absolutely blown away.  So good. -Ronon and John fighting with Bantos rods and hopping on one foot.  Bantos rod fighting scenes in general. -That real life siblings portrayed Rodney and Jeannie Miller.  It brought a huge element of awesome.  Jeannie is amazing! -The love triangle, for lack of a better term, was actually handled extremely well.  Granted, it's annoying in any shape or form, but Ronon and Rodney didn't get into some big pissing match over Jennifer and she made her feelings about what she wanted extremely clear instead of dithering around about it. -That Teyla realized it wouldn't be safe for her to be on the team while pregnant and that it was extremely hard to go back. Side note: I hate pregnancy storylines where the woman gets all shirty when people tell her to take it easy (particularly when her normal job is extremely dangerous) like they think she's less capable.   Uh, no, that's not being independent and strong, that's being stupid and selfish.  It is not weak to protect your child, it's common sense, and it reflects well on you, not poorly. -The song Beyond the Night and how they put it in the show.  It was so vastly different than anything either show had done before, but it was beautiful and well done. -Rodney, Jennifer, and Sam trying to get out of a hole in the ground together -Ronon and Teal'c fighting badass style together.  It took them a while, but they are the most metal crime fighting duo in the entire world -Rodney and Daniel interaction.  More and more and more please.  They bicker and snipe and work so well together, it's like a sarcasm orgy. -Ronon Dex fighting Wraith in a ware house.  Side by side cutting with Eliot Spencer fighting in a warehouse, please. -Todd the Wraith (and that they name the Wraith such ridiculous names). It's always better when your villains are ambiguously evil and you kind of like them.  Is Todd dead?  WE DON'T KNOW! -Ronon and Teyla holding hands while he takes her to the infirmary.  They are so adorable together and sweet. -While we're on the subject, I like Rodney and Jennifer together.  The only romance the show ever took the time to develop and too little too late some say.  But it makes sense to me and he learns a lot. -While we're further on the subject, I love the whole leaders in love thing that I could see going on with John and Elizabeth.  It also would have been nice to see develop. -Amelia kickboxing her way to victory -Chuck the Technician will never be as cool as Walter, but he's still pretty awesome -The episode where John time travels into the future and hologram Rodney shares with him everything that happened.  Really really cool. -Nanite hallucination for Elizabeth, really great job by Torri. -The Michael arc was very good, I think they could have done a lot more with it and planned it better, but the idea and him were really cool. -That Carson came back.  Oh, thank God that Carson came back.  A part of me is really sad that actual Carson is dead and some other man is living his life, but I figure he's the kind of man who wouldn't mind.  Rodney going and visiting his stasis pod gives me all kinds of feels.  Carson is literally the whole cinnamon roll too good and pure for this world meme. -Rodney delivers Torren! -Rodney being jealous of himself -Alternate dimension jumping Daedalus. -The way Rodney always says ZedPMs.  So Canadian! -Wraith Queen Teyla -Them trying to adjust to Earth again in the Return.  I love that Atlantis became their home and each other their family.  They don't belong on Earth anymore.   -John's speech to Teyla about how everyone is his family and there's nothing he wouldn't do for any of them -Woolsey kicking ass in their trial -Zelenka covered in body paint after spending time on the kid planet. -John's leadership style.  So casual, so intense.  "I'm sorry for shooting everybody!" -Ronon's smile.  Ronon's three freckles on his face.  His triangle eyebrows.   His hair.  His gun, ooh, I love his gun.  The way he lifts John in play that one time. -Twilight Bark/LOTR Beacon scene -The way everyone was obsessed with Lucius.  That was so funny. I don't like: -It felt like nothing was planned.  They just sort of...did whatever seemed cool to them and it resulted in poor resolution at times and extremely poor character/relationship development -That for an ensemble cast, so much emphasis was put on John and Rodney.  Maybe Buffy spoiled this as well for me, but in my opinion, if you're in the credits, you should be in every episode.  Even just a bit at the end or a bit at the beginning, but you should be involved.  (SG1 did this as well, but not as badly as SGA).  I could be wrong but they clearly made the effort to do this with John and Rodney so they were in every episode.  Even if the episode wasn't about them, there was some kind of scene with them in it.  So clearly, they were capable of that.  Things like Ronon and Teyla not being in the Vegas episode, annoy the heck out of me. -The kids leaving Rodney, Sam, and Jennifer to die in the hole.  Maybe I'm unrealistic, but I just feel like nobody would actually do that in such a dire situation. -They switched planets!  What about the Athosians new home?  It felt like we didn't even see what happened to them and then all of a sudden they were in a new place and missing from it. I always thought...maybe Atlantis was more about where it was then just the city itself.  Apparently not. -Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!  I mean, it'd probably be one of my favorite episodes if not for the end.  It's really cool that way, but I cannot forgive them for doing that to me.   Especially now that I know it was done on purpose to "shake things up" and for ratings since SG1 was ending. -Ford never had a chance.  He was never going to be my favorite, but they could have done so much more with him.  It's really sad how badly they botched that up.  Also, there's no reason they couldn't have actually developed him once they turned him into a psycho Wraith wanna be.  That would have been an amazing S2 character arc for him, but instead, it became 'guest star' and Ronon was clearly chosen to replace him. -Teyla's baby arc.  I get that Rachel was actually pregnant and I'm super glad they wrote it in rather than killing her off or making her stand behind furniture like a sitcom (totally not compatible with her active fighting or love of midriff-less clothing.)  But the whole thing was really rushed.  Like, how am I supposed to care about some random dude I've never met named Kanaan, who's the father of her baby?  Romance should evoke feelings, not blankness.  I just never got the chance to really care about them as a couple, which could be why I really have always seen Ronon and Teyla together, honestly. -They way they wrote Elizabeth out of the show.   It's horrendous and unacceptable.  They didn't know what to do with her?  Uh, so you actually take the time and figure it out.  Making her leave just because they wanted someone from SG1 to come on to the show is the stupidest thing.  She was amazing and a great leader and had a lot more to give.  So what if she was intended to be more of a General Hammond. Part of being a show runner is playing to your strengths and what people love.  Both of those things were Weir.  I love Sam, always have, always will, she did great, but, that was just another example of the horrible, horrible way Atlantis handled character development and why they were never quite as good as SG1.  Even the whole Elizabeth arc being resolved with her in a different Replicator body just felt wrong and disrespectful.  (All the Replicator stuff seemed a little bit off to me (especially as regards her) and maybe they just went a little bit crazy without taking the time to think things through). -The Genii as villains.  Ugh, they just rubbed me the wrong way.  Colm Meany is awesome as is Robert Davi, but they just didn't do it for me -Harmony.  Annoying children who deliberately manipulate adults and lie about what they've done to discredit another adult, are so awful.  Granted, Rodney is a petty, selfish, arrogant child himself, but John has no reason to suppose he's not telling the truth.  Not really.  Children shouldn't be allowed to get away with that.  It reminds me of my younger brother and he and I used to fight all the time when he would be a brat and annoy me on purpose.  My mom always said since I was older, I had to be more mature and not rise to it.  Perhaps true, but the most unfair thing ever and it still bothers me when I see it in others today. -Destruction of the Midway.  So sad, it was such a cool idea.  It's just annoying them always trying to figure out how to limit travel between Earth and Pegasus.  Just give them both ZPMs then! -Sam not being present at Brain Storm.  All the most brilliant scientists on Earth, my auntie.   (Bill Nye was cool!)  But just a simple exchange like Jennifer asking if Sam would be there and Rodney replying that no, she was off world, would have sufficed. -Remember when Jennifer, in her first scene, was all afraid of being CMO and didn't want the job?  Yeah, literally never mentioned again. Much more thematic problems with SGA, I'm afraid, but still plenty, plenty to love.
