Anatomy of a Handle Attachment: See the journey from a simple design to an (almost) finished hand-stitched handle attachment. And soon enough you’ll see where these babies land 👶🏻👜 The current project on which I’m working is the first ever machine-stitched tote bag in the program; but there is one item not at all machine-stitched, and that would be the handle attachment. From forming one to attaching it onto the body of the bag, it is all hand stitched. So, the next time you see your bag’s handle attachments, please be gentle with them. They have been through a lot, haha. 👜 💕 . . . . . . #atelierfoxenrose #leather #craftsmanship #artisan #artisanleather #italianleather @amblardleatheratelier #amblardleatheratelier #handleattachment (at Amblard Leather Atelier) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEuUJ20lCyI07TWAIj68OyzWr5cER88C4ibZjQ0/?igshid=1ferbvbia97ks

Project 13: Structured Bag with Rope Handles . I’m thrilled to present my first ever Rope Handle Structured Bag: The Pink Elephant Bag. . (And those of you with mind in the gutter, what do you see, haha!) . When you have been around @beatriceamblard you cannot help but feel inspired by the many bags that had come out of her imagination. She encourages creativity, although I can see the glee in her eyes when I propose a certain project. Later on as I curse myself for having certain features that demand difficult techniques, she just smiles like the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. But you know what? I’ll do it all over again. Under her guidance, everything is possible. So, come to @amblardleatheratelier You too can make this 👜 . . . . . . . #atelierfoxenrose #maroquinerie #leather #ALAproject13 #structuredbag #ropehandles #thepinkelephantbag #pinkelephant #amblardleatheratelier #elephant #craftsmanship #artisan #artisanleather #italianleather (at Amblard Leather Atelier) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDmwrUIFUaFxB-c-zJ6u7Np_O2JLy-2xhEg4mw0/?igshid=1gjsmw4fy959n

Project 13: Structured Bag with Rope Handles. Hello Ladies, this post will be for you, as it features something you may already have in your closet; but Gents, it may apply to you because you too may have carried bag with this feature: Rope Handles! Can you guess what design will come out of this project? . For this project, the leather amount and cutting may not be as much as my previous Tote Bag; but the technical difficulty gets more challenging and very demanding. Skiving (a technique where you slice off part of the layers of leather in a tapered mode, so that the edges of the object will appear thinner and more elegant) is prominently and more frequently used. . New to me is, of course, the construction of the rope handles. Most of the steps are quite straightforward; but the attaching of the handles to the body of the bag proves to be quite challenging. It involves the least stitching but the most demanding technique and patience. . . . . . . . #atelierfoxenrose #maroquinerie #leather #ALAproject13 #structuredbag #ropehandles #amblardleatheratelier (at Amblard Leather Atelier) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDkqCMcFpXQdhOHRq4bsiRNahDjaB3_-85QD9o0/?igshid=6x8q8w66knqn

Project 10: The Tote Bag Some parameters were given, but the design and actual dimension would be from me. When I looked at the straps, I thought of treating them as a guy’s suspenders. Thus, the bag would consist of a shirt, a pair of pants, and pair of suspenders. Yellow buttons were added as stitched-on appliqués. The navy blue pants acted as an outside pocket, for convenience. I love the surprise lollipop red interior lining, juxtaposed against the antique white and navy blue exterior leathers.🧵 . Because I wanted the bag to be able to be carried over the shoulder, the straps had to be long. And goodness, doing those 4 long straps at 40” each essentially would be the same as doing belts. So, as much as I complained to myself during the production of those straps, I was grateful to have had the experience. Thank you @amelie_laure for modeling the bag.👜 . . . . . . . #foxenroseleather #leather #maroquinerie #totebag #ALAproject10 #amblardleatheratelier (at Amblard Leather Atelier) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDc_6yOlJC1DqM_a_d3eNj-HgvkIgjM8xWVRyU0/?igshid=15w703xsvkdnu

About last night: Thank you for the love 💕 from @beatriceamblard who has nurtured me from a leather ignoramus to a decent leather artisan; and to @amelie_laure whose help and support have been too numerous to count; and to @mzztrzz whose presence, effervescence, and ebullience have been deliciously infectious during my 6-months of internship at the @amblardleatheratelier Also a million of thanks to my husband @dbucky for dropping me off, picking me up, and driving back to the workshop when I had forgotten things to take 💕 and 💋 to all my friends whose words of encouragement have lifted me up when I feel in doubt about my work. . . . . . . #atelierfoxenrose #leather #craftsmanship #artisan #artisanleather #italianleather #graduation2020 #AmblardLeathergraduation (at Amblard Leather Atelier) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFAHc3sF9IHs8Z9xlP1oc4ypjsrrozJhk8iCdU0/?igshid=11bgvakt3lnli

Project 10: Tote Bag Before the reveal, I’d like to show you what goes on behind the making of a tote bag: From an abstract image, to translating it to drawing on paper, and then converting it to patterns, using a 1-point and/or 2-point of symmetry; from cutting the leather, to splitting, skiving, gluing, and then more skiving. Crucial to the production are the steps; and I cannot emphasize this point more. One tiny misstep, and you might have to do it all over again. To Mme @beatriceamblard of the @amblardleatheratelier , all these steps are like breathing in and breathing out. She does not even have to stop to think. She knows exactly what each student in varying levels of the workshop is doing or is about to do, and she knows what steps need to be taken. I aspire to achieve that mastery, but I may not have the luxury of time. So I must work harder and faster.🧵 . . . . . . . #foxenroseleather #leather #maroquinerie (at Amblard Leather Atelier) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDcGRUcFmfZxMRE_v33CSz300YrS2heKIhEgIc0/?igshid=m1vc8aitliew

Week 6 - Project 9: Clutch, with Magnetic Clasp and one Interior Pocket, a major project done during Covid-19. This hand-stitched clutch, unlike the “Bird” clutch, has two gussets. The simple appearance betrays the challenging steps that need to be taken even before all the 3 layers of leather (main body/flap and backing, plus the interior/lining) are glued to each other. Sooo glad I keep the design and color simple this time with only an asymmetrical diagonal flap instead of a symmetrical one; so that I can focus on the demanding technique. The patient mind and guiding hands of Mme. @beatriceamblard are present in each step of the making of this clutch; je te remercie beaucoup, Béa. Tu es toujours très gentille et généreuse. 🧵 . . . . . . . #maroquinerie #leather #saddlestitch #clutch #purse #magneticclasp @amblardleatheratelier #foxenrose_leather #atelierfoxenrose (at Amblard Leather Atelier) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAbbJ2Pll5153VCFZX_nZzlbApBiRRUY6zhuj40/?igshid=1floh4de7ro0y

Week 5 - Project 8: Credit Card Wallet with Zipper, with pattern from the brilliant Mme. @beatriceamblard from the @amblardleatheratelier Well, finally this project is done! I was sooo close to finishing this wallet when Ms. Coronavirus rears its ugly face in San Francisco. With no access to just one tool for finishing the last edges, the project languished in my studio at home. No one in San Francisco had in stock the French produced tool, so I looked online and found someone in Ukraine who could supply me, until he found out Poland closed its borders, and his supplier was on the other side. Eventually I found a company in Utah that had it in stock, but the Shelter in Place there had slowed down the process of handling and shipping; but finally it arrived yesterday! Thank you @amelie_laure for the advice on supplies.🧵 . . . . . . . #maroquinerie #leather #saddlestitch #valettray #pinchedtray @amblardleatheratelier (at Amblard Leather Atelier) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-ibZFolhpZTrPzKjwFubD4L2kncmer_nGJWjc0/?igshid=1apkhc6znxyd7

I have been asked by some how I got the dachshund printed on the tray. Well, the answer is it was not printed. As you can see in the next few photos that it starts with a drawing/design, and then the design paper was superimposed on the “top” leather (light blue) and as I cut around the dachshund on the paper, it also cut out the same shape on the blue leather. The blue leather with the negative image of the dog is then pricked and stitched around the edges. The edge is then “finished” (several steps including cleaning the wax off the stitch, hammering the stitch, then sanding, dyeing, waxing, ironing, sanding again, waxing again, buffing, and cleaning.) Then the dark blue leather (already affixed with a foam pad) is affixed to the bottom of the light blue leather. And then I’m only half way done! 🧵 . . . . . . . #maroquinerie #leather #saddlestitch #valettray #pinchedtray @amblardleatheratelier (at Amblard Leather Atelier) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9i0Vt_FLwZsx0oemRqemuS6JUO3oTtO6_3J5g0/?igshid=1xs7nyxptd32r

Week 4 - Project 7: Envelope Clutch. In this project I learn how to do a gusset, and reinforcing the concept of two-point symmetry. I design the flap (the bird head and beak with the snap button as the eye) but using the basic pattern of gusseted envelope clutch by Ms. @beatriceamblard Only after the project is done do I realize that I have created two birds in essence: The one when it is closed (the purple bird) and the one when it is open (the red bird.) There are two challenges I face in this project: Stitching through four layers with only half of them pricked. If you look closely, the stitching on the gusset looks horrible, marking the first time ever that my back stitching sucks big time. And the other challenge is finishing the edges. Yet it is one more building block toward making the eventual goal of mine: A tote bag!🧵 . . . . . . . #maroquinerie #leather #saddlestitch #envelopeclutch #twopointsymmetry #gusset #gussetedclutch @amblardleatheratelier (at Amblard Leather Atelier) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9e8FPKFUPjIiNxvkjVtNYZWSskdHmJiJ0M3fo0/?igshid=nlpq2yfm5exb

Week 3 - Project 6: Valet Tray. This is the final project of Level 1, and I am so excited to share with you this little darling of mine. It has been a challenge to do this one, because of the shape of the dachshund that I had decided to do for this pinched tray. It is a surprise gift for David (and now he wants an identical one, since we have two dachshunds at home!) Moreover, there are a lot of detailed finishing (dyeing, buffing, and polishing the edges) and new ways of saddle stitching. The dark leather makes it difficult to sew as I could hardly see the pricked holes; but the result, I am extremely happy with it. And with this, I am moving on to Level 2. Thank you Mlles. @beatriceamblard and Amélie for their invaluable instructions and patience. Come on down to the Atelier and do a 1-day workshop!🧵 . . . . . . . #maroquinerie #leather #saddlestitch #pinchedtray @amblardleatheratelier (at Amblard Leather Atelier) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9UfVIjFo3tSn1VIy7XA73pO4jna07JSblg20A0/?igshid=ck53xq2ovrdz

Week 3 - Project 5: Zippered Pouch. In This project I learn how to use a mold to help form and put the zipper in place. I also learn how to take off zipper teeth, and to install the end stop. And this is the first time I sew one side and turn it inside out. As I said before, we’re learning the building blocks at the moment. All the projects have come from the patterns from Mlle. @beatriceamblard of @amblardleatheratelier Later on we can use these basic concepts and explode with creativity.🧵 . . . . . . . #maroquinerie #leather #saddlestitch #zipperedpouch #zipper (at Amblard Leather Atelier) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9UeD6qlo16P5LtmwyecEWwNZnjvTQL9kz6Sg00/?igshid=1646ffo9rq2uy
