New Year, New Le(niency)

Before we start I’m going to plug my latest eBook — a collection of Grand Final reviews from the past decade. You can buy it here, or you could help me out by leaving a (glowing) review on Amazon…
We haven’t had a regular series episode of University Challenge for three weeks, which means that I’ve been able to distract myself by writing terrible poetry about the sky.
People going into Tesco When the sky is like this Into Sainsbury’s When the sky is like this
It also means that we have had our now-traditional Christmas interlude, with teams of well-to-do graduates from ten institutions having a crack at our favourite quiz.
This year there were three Cambridge colleges and one Oxford College, a ratio of 40% compared to the 29% we had in the regular series. Surely there are enough famous people who went to less salubrious establishments, but then again, maybe I’m wrong.
Sign up for The University Challenge Review
Spoilers ahead, be warned…
Durham were the only team who turned up for the first round, with Green Party co-leader Carla Denyer determined to take this very seriously, which I admired. They were the only team to score more than 200 points, which was 90 more than Queen’s, Cam who ranked second.
They were less dominant in the semis, beating Worcester, Ox by 35 points. Queen’s beat fellow Cambridge side Churchhill on a tiebreak to join them in the final.
This is where things get interesting.
The two sides traded early starters, with Denyer being perhaps controversially allowed the answer zirconium despite the fact she hadn’t actually buzzed. Queen’s had already buzzed incorrectly, but her teammate James buzzed at pretty much the same time Denyer started speaking.
However, watching back with frame-by-frame accuracy like a video assistant referee, it is clear that Denyer does start speaking before James buzzes. I paused the footage at the precise moment James buzzes and at that point Denyer has already said at the very least ‘zirc’.
I came on here with the intention of writing something about how the show was getting more lenient (hence the title), but the transgression isn’t as serious as I had originally thought. Denyer should still buzz of course, but crucially she starts answering before the buzz from James, which is why she was given a reprieve.
That’s enough fun (for now), let’s get on with tonight’s episode. If you want to watch it before reading the review you can do so here.
Here’s your first starter for ten.
Darwin, Cam face Edinburgh for the fourth quarter-final spot, with both sides comfortable winners in round one. In 2019, Darwin were 25 points away from facing Edinburgh in the Grand Final, losing 165–140 to St Edmund Hall, Ox in the semis.
Darwin’s Whitaker took eleven starters (the entirety of his team’s haul) in their first-round match, and he kicked things off in the same style with Paris. They took two bonuses on paintings of enslaved people before Whitaker took a second consecutive starter with the Argonauts.
This was slightly similar to the Denyer answer from the Christmas special, in that he answered after buzzing but before his name had been announced, and it looks as though he gave the answer in concert with his teammate Willis, who had buzzed a fraction later than he. Rajan lets them off but warns them against doing the same in the future.
Aiton loses five points for a guess of treason, but Whitaker can’t make it a hat-trick and the question drops. Mellor gets Edinburgh off the mark with Oxford English Dictionary next time out, and then Willis takes Darwin’s first non-Whitaker starter of the series with the Krebs Cycle on the picture starter.
A starter from Myles keeps Edinburgh in touch, but Whitaker reasserts his dominance with Mali on the following question, buzzing as soon as he heard the name of the capital city Bamako. A man who has done his revision, clearly. He takes his fourth with Ari Aster, and Edinburgh are going to need to start challenging him on the buzzer if they are to stand a chance.
The music starter, on Mussorgsky, goes to Aiton, and he corrects Saint-Saens to Satie at the last second to save five points on the bonuses. His streak continues with arc, then Edinburgh are cruelly denied the points for saying Dorothy Hodgkins rather than Hodgkin, which feels like needless pedantry.
Scourge, courtesy of Self, helps Edinburgh to close within ten points, but, perhaps predictably, Whitaker views this state of affairs as undesirable, and buzzes in with Grendel at the very next opportunity.
Aiton keeps Edinburgh in the game, but whenever things get a bit uncomfortable for Darwin, Whitaker is there to take the heat off. This time, on the second picture starter, with Elizabeth Siddal.
He ends the match with eight starters to his name, which is a slight drop-off from his first-round efforts, but remains by far the best in the match, and it is more than enough to earn his side a place in the quarter-finals.
Darwin 155–125 Edinburgh
Edinburgh can count themselves unlucky to have faced such a buzzer star in Whitaker at this stage, and performed decently in losing. Darwin look strong, but if Whiatker has an off day then they are very vulnerable.
Next week sees Wadham facing defending champions Imperial — join me for another recap. Goodbye.

I love awards season, not just to see the films and series I love possibly be rewarded, but because it helps the year go by quickly. My last Oscar FYC event was the day before my first Emmy FYC event. My last FYC Emmy event was late August - my first film awards season FYC event will be this weekend.
Slowly but surely each studio will put forth their FYC slate. So far only a few have updated their page.
Amazon so far has up AIR, AMERICAN FICTION, BOTTOMS, THE BOYS IN THE BOAT, THE BURIAL, CASSANDRO
starring the always excellent Gael Garcia Bernal, with Bad Bunny

Sony has slim pickings for now with only DUMB MONEY, SPIDER-MAN ACROSS THE UNIVERSE and Ridley Scott's NAPOLEON (starring Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby) on their site. Surely their big bet is on the latter two.

WB hasn't updated their site and to me it's the biggest question mark of what their plans are. Surely the will put up BARBIE, but with DUNE PART TWO being pushed to 2024, the question is will they do the bare minimum qualifying run (releasing it in one of 6 cities by the end of the year) without cast promo or just do the campaign for the 2025 Golden Globes and Oscar season.

3. Descanso Gardens
Because I can’t resist a botanical garden! Gardens are becoming a go-to attraction for me on vacations, and the Descanso Gardens in Los Angeles did not disappoint. The day we went was not too crowded but was impressive enough to earn a huge crowd—a hidden gem for LA tourists!

4. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Panel at PaleyFest
The gardens were lovely, but there were two other attractions that were the real reason for my visit to Los Angeles. The first was PaleyFest to see Amy Sherman-Palladino, Daniel Palladino, and the cast of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel! Just before the fifth and final season started on Amazon Prime, we heard Alex Borstein and Rachel Brosnahan share their mourning process for the show’s ending, Caroline Aaron and Michael Zegen reflect on what these roles have meant to them, and Tony Shalhoub crack up the crowd. (And who knew I would be so starstruck by him? When he came on stage I wanted to scream, “YOU WERE SO GOOD IN GALAXY QUEST!”) Check out SO IT’S A SHOW’s Instagram for more highlights from when my podcast co-host Kyla and I visited the Dolby Theatre (home of the Oscars!).

4. John Mulaney: Baby J (2023)
A full year ago I saw John Mulaney on his From Scratch tour, and now you can enjoy the set at home. His joke about not being interested in science “from magnets to ducks” did not make the cut (and alas now I can’t remember the setup for that punchline), but the other 90% of a show that made me laugh so hard I cried is preserved forever.

5. The Muppets. (2015-16)
Why did this gem only last 16 episodes? In this one-season single-cam sitcom, the Muppets are working on Late Night with Miss Piggy, a setting that could’ve produced comedy gold for years. With the frazzled Kermit producing, the Electric Mayhem as the in-studio band, and celebrity guests through the felt nose, I’m glad I checked out these 16 eps even though they ended on a cliffhanger. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like for Miss Piggy to date Josh Groban or to hold grudges against every blonde actress in Hollywood, you won’t want to miss it either.

7. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. (2023)
Special in the way that the best coming-of-age movies are. I suspect Margaret’s insecurities about boys, bras, and besties will feel relatable to Gens Z and Alpha if for no other reason than this movie’s depiction felt scarily accurate to my own experience in the mid-2000s. I promise I will never start a review with the story of my first period ever again! At least, probably—at the rate we're going, it will never be apropos again. Read the full review at ZekeFilm. 2. The Academy Museum
The other reason I went out to Los Angeles: After years of pandemic-caused delays, I finally made it to the Academy Museum! Six floors of movie and Oscars history and memorabilia? You know I’m in my happy place, but casual movie fans will find something for them, too. Some of my favorite exhibits included the several-stories high Mount Rushmore backdrop used in North by Northwest, the gallery that used The Godfather to show each element of filmmaking, and the pianos from Casablanca. Fanny’s (named for Barbra Streisand’s character in Funny Girl) serves exceptional museum food, and I learned about deep cut filmmakers and movements I was only vaguely familiar with before I went. I’d give the Academy a gold statue for museum execution if I could!
3. Good Reads
A miscellaneous round up of good stuff I’ve read lately…
Final thoughts on 2022 Awards Season:
“How Avatar: The Way of Water Can Make $2 Billion and Still Feel Irrelevant,” Vox.com (2023)
“How Did We Let the Golden Globes Back In?” LATimes.com (2022)
Unexpected responses to Cocaine Bear:

Watching trends that need to be fixed:
“Mumbling Actors, Bad Speakers or Lazy Listeners? Why Everyone is Watching TV With Subtitles On,” TheGuardian.com (2023)
“Television Is Going Exactly the Wrong Direction. I Know the Solution.” Slate.com (2023)
Explorations of our malaise at work:
“How to Care Less About Work,” TheAtlantic.com (2021)
“The Age of the Crisis of Work,” Harpers.org (2023)
All the ways—okay, just some of the way—social media is on the struggle bus right now:

4. Current Exhibits at the St. Louis Art Museum
My membership to the SLAM always pays off. In April I indulged in two special exhibits:
The Age of Armor, which showcases the history of armor and battle gear with an emphasis on suits of armor. The galleries did a great job explaining how the armor functioned and provided model pieces to try yourself, but you know my favorite part was the Black Panther and Star Wars costumes at the end!
Monet/Mitchell: Painting the French Landscape compares the work of Claude Monet and American expat Joan Mitchell, and it brought me back to my magical trip to Giverny last summer!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/bc55decf577d8c1714b1338cad7f9299/d593b6c795bc09ff-35/s540x810/30a002c51867db052cd648267a9873d3b4de6673.jpg)
5. The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (1939)
Sumptous costumes and sets, Bette Davis doing the most acting, and Errol Flynn at his handsomest. This Queen Elizabeth I costume drama from Michael Curtiz is maximalist in aesthetic and romantic at its heart. Crowd: 7/10 // Critic: 9/10
6. Under the Umbrella: A Little Women Podcast (2023-)
Little Women superfans unite! Kate and Kelsey (friends and both teachers) are analyzing the book and film versions from every angle, and if you love the March sisters, Louisa May Alcott, or Greta Gerwig, they are going to be your new best friends.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/30da09874f6d47474ee5d81fad968222/d593b6c795bc09ff-cd/s540x810/cf870110db3bd3d9ab5d8a4af4038646129288e7.jpg)
7. Just Like Us: The Tabloids That Changed America (2022)
Last spring the Ringer Dish podcast did a deep dive into the ‘00s tabloids and their obsession with Brangelina, Bennifer, and ‘90s child stars gone wild—so basically everything I obsessed over in middle school. Bottom line: They probably didn’t make our world better, but those mags (and emerging online blogs and reality TV) sure tapped into parts of our brains that made them addictive. This eight-episode series challenges any assumption we have about about celebrity gossip being harmless—or frivolous.
Until May’s Round Up…
In spite of the current state of things, I’m still tweeting in denial as @tblake24. Come join me until this platform burns to the ground!

This month’s Treats is on Poland. The postcard is from Gdansk. The recipe is for Polish paczki, which are like donuts. There are some ‘new’ snacks. I had the Bebe cookies for snack. That one was interesting. It said petit beurre which is French for literally little butter. Maybe it’s a special kind of cookie that originated in France. There’s a sesame candy/snap that sounds good too. There are some long looking wafer bars. Each one a different flavor. Some with chocolate, coconut, or hazelnut. There are a lot of pretzels. The coffee candy reminds me of the Indonesian coffee candy. I wonder if they taste similar?
This will probably be my last Treats box. I’ve been getting it for about 3 years. Amazon will stop their subscription for it at the end of this month. I feel like it’s time to try something new anyways. I’m thinking of getting Universal Yums. Specifically their Yum Yum box. It seems like they cover more countries, and I think you get more in depth info on the country and it’s snacks. You pick a country to start with, then they choose the next one. It’s a surprise each time like Treats is. I’m not sure what I’ll pick. They also have you fill out a quiz on what flavors you like and such. It might be more customizable that way.

SCENES WE'D LIKE TO SEE: VTUBER EDITION (S1, E4)
AW – Amelia Watson PM - Projekt Melody VA - Vox Akuma RP – Rin Penrose AC – Ai Candii RD – Rosedoodle
Unlikely Lines From A Children's Book AW: Mr. Stubborn wouldn't leave. He was the elected leader of the Conservative Party. AC: I'll huff and I'll puff, and I'll blow you, Albanese! PM: As Noddy looked at his new friends Rampant Rabbit and Linda The Love Egg, he realized he was in a very different kind of Toy Town. RP: And all the animals of Buttercup celebrated 'cause Percy Pig was going to the slaughterhouse and they never had to listen to that whiny little bastard again! VA: 'And the beautiful woman was cursed to sleep for 100 years.' And that's your defence, is it, Mr. Cosby? (Yagoo: He didn't do it, don't boo him.) AW: (English accent) "I'm Paddington Bear from Peru," said Paddington, "and if you show me where the toilet is, I'll poo out this condom of cocaine." RD: It's the absolutely horrific follow-up to "Netflix and Chill": Swallows and Amazons. AC: And was there a happy ending? Well, the prince did love massage parlours. VA: "I will never tell you my name, you will have to guess my name," said Rumpelstiltskin, really holding up the queue at Starbucks. PM: From under the bridge came the voice of the troll, (mimes typing) "Waa, women can't be Ghostbusters! Send." RD: Every day, Jack and Jill have to walk up a hill just to fetch one pail of water. But for just five pounds a month… AW: "Oh. It wasn't a giant peach after all," thought James as he watched the Big Friendly Giant put on his swimming trunks. RP: He pushed aside the clothes and there, at the back of the wardrobe, he found a magical land of nipple clamps and lube. PM: There's an enby in the cupboard! I think they're hiding from the UAP! (AC approaches the mic) Oh, come on, that's unfair! AC: I've been in this cupboard for bloody ages.
Things You Wouldn't Hear On a Quiz Show RD: You've already used your fifty-fifty to narrow down the options to A) In, or B) Out. Mr. Cameron, are you sure you want to ask the audience? AW: Well, in that round on Sexually Transmitted Diseases, you passed on four… PM: We asked you for things that start with an "E". You said "a great night out with the gals." AW: Welcome to America's only quiz about birds of prey. Fingers on buzzards, please. AC: Here at The Chase, we just want to reiterate that our chaser is not called "The Ladykiller" for any sexist reasons. Now, can you please welcome our new chaser, Millie "The Boob Wobbler" Lavigne. VA: So, the final round on Family Feud is sudden death. BOO! RP: Welcome to Eggheads. Well, we couldn't call it Smug Pricks, could we? AC: Welcome to Tipping Point, for people who are too thick to follow The Chase. PM: Name? Donald Trump- I mean, Jim! Occupation? President- I mean, washing machine salesman! RP: I'm afraid we're gonna have to take your first answer, so let's see if the capital of Azerbaijan is "Fucked if I know." AW: Is that your final answer? (pause) I'll marry someone else, then… RD: Well, at the end of this week's episode of Who Wants To Be A Canadian Millionaire?, the winner is Sam Ulman, who will be walking away with $20,000. But, of course, the real winner is Rose's dad Hugh at home who got two questions right and is going to brag on about it for the rest of the damn week. PM: Well, we've given the contestants their meth and sent them to Universal. Welcome to The Crystal Maze. RP: My chosen specialized subject? Uh, your wife. Yeah, you heard me. AW: (back to the audience, pretends to squat as if she's urinating) I've started, so I'll finish… AC: Well, that was the banker, and he says he thinks you're going to accept this deal, because in his box is your wife. RP: Well, today, it's Kelly Brook and Joey Essex versus Stephens Hawking and Fry. This is fucking Pointless.

How do customers buy beauty products today?

Blog:
In beauty and skincare, not everyone wants the same thing. Thanks to the internet, we now know that people from different places and ages like to shop for beauty products differently. Both shoppers and companies need to understand these differences to make smart choices and keep up with changes in how we buy beauty products.
There are two main types of shoppers: those who live in big cities love to shop from websites and local shops. At the same time, people from smaller towns prefer buying from big online stores like Amazon. This happens because city folks enjoy trying products in stores, and those in smaller towns like the convenience of shopping online.
Age also matters a lot. Young people are used to the internet and like to hunt for the best deals and the newest products online. On the other hand, older people might prefer going to stores to see and feel the products themselves and get advice on what to buy.
What people want from their beauty products can also depend on their lifestyle and what's important to them. Younger shoppers often look for products that are good for the environment and everyone, and they like real and active brands online. Older shoppers might stick with brands they've known and trusted for years, available at their favorite physical stores.
Online shopping for beauty products has grown a lot, especially with the push from recent global events, and it will keep growing. Companies are working hard to improve their online stores and ads to attract more customers. Shopping online is getting more exciting, with live videos and more ways to feel like you're part of a shopping experience, even if you're just on your phone or computer.
Money matters, too. People who have less to spend might look for cheaper deals online. But they might splurge on luxury items and special shopping experiences in stores when they have more money. Companies trying to sell beauty products need to understand these differences and make their products and ads fit what people in different places and of different ages want.
In short, knowing what different types of customers like helps people make better buying choices and helps companies sell more effectively. As shopping habits keep changing, one thing stays the same: having options makes shopping for beauty products interesting.
But it can be overwhelming too, just like they say, "too many cooks spoil the broth." If you feel overwhelmed while looking for products online - try UB's skin quiz. Developed with expertise, it goes beyond the basics to consider your lifestyle, environment, and goals, offering personalized recommendations. With our quiz, you're not just choosing products but building a skincare routine.
No more guesswork, just results. Start your journey to better skin today.

Bedroom Bliss: Where to Find the Best Beds Online
When it comes to your bedroom, the most important piece of furniture is undoubtedly the bed. It's not just a place to rest your weary bones; it's your sanctuary, your haven of peace and comfort. In today's digital age, the world of bedroom furniture has expanded beyond local stores, and there's a whole universe of options available at your fingertips. If you're in search of the perfect bed online, you've come to the right place. In this guide, we'll explore some of the best online destinations to find that dreamy, blissful bed you've always wanted. Whether you're looking for a cozy twin, a luxurious king, or a stylish platform bed, we've got you covered.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/88c05066006b87cb6c313ead3b48f312/d4805987a593fce6-66/s400x600/441827f57a1d5c9402f5827c0d6881391651fe9d.jpg)
1. The Elegance of E-Commerce: Why Buy a Bed Online?
In the past, buying a bed meant visiting multiple stores, navigating pushy salespeople, and making rushed decisions. Today, the digital landscape has revolutionized the way we shop for beds. With just a few clicks, you can explore a vast array of options, read reviews, compare prices, and have your dream bed delivered straight to your doorstep. Shopping for a bed online is not only convenient but also offers a broader selection of styles, sizes, and prices. Plus, you can do it all from the comfort of your current bed – talk about a seamless shopping experience!
2. The King of Convenience: Amazon Bed Online
For those who crave convenience, Amazon is a powerhouse for finding the perfect bed online. With an extensive collection of brands, styles, and prices, Amazon offers an unparalleled selection. You can read reviews, check out detailed product descriptions, and even benefit from fast shipping options, including Amazon Prime. 6. Sleepopolis Selections: A Haven for Sleep Enthusiasts

I really believe that the reason why 99% aren’t seeing results of energy work is they’re not utilizing the mind-body connection properly.
The Mind-Body connection is where true healing really occurs in the body. It’s due to the Mind-Heart coherence we hear about. It’s when the mind and the body are in connection – they start doing something magical to your nervous system. It creates what is known as Deconditioning. When we Decondition ourselves from our past conditioned Mindset and Emotional programming, we free our Energetic blocks and Emotions. The deconditioning process allows both a freeing of the emotions you suppressed and a Releasing of the Old Pattern that may no longer serve you in your life. At the same time, there’s potent work in the repatterning process because this is where the Identity Starts to Change.
As I mentioned in this Infographic, the pyramid of change shows us the most effective way to create transformation in the body (see right)
The Transformation Lives in the Identity
The work is really looking at those identity shifts.
It’s looking at how can you instigate the mind-body connection to create real sustainable results of success in your nervous system mentally, emotionally, and physically. The chakras help illustrate this beautifully because it gives you a beautiful mind-body map. It teaches you to easily Pinpoint: what’s not working? What area of your life is either suffering, imbalanced, misaligned, or maybe it’s not even so much suffering as just, it’s just a little bit off track.
When it comes to really diving into healing, it’s not just about healing a pattern or emotional wound. It’s about you having to realize there’s a person inside of you who’s on the other side of healing. That person has manifested differently. They Mentally, Physically & Emotionally have different relationships. Likewise, They may have different values, standards, or even different habits. You Might even have a different hairstyle! Your Transformation will be unique and authentic to you. It’s so much deeper than just a conversation of freaking go get some crystals, meditate once and hope for the best while you get a clearing ritual done.
Here’s the thing – The real hard truth is you gotta do that internal energetic work. You have to be willing to put in the work. The work is rooted in your Internal State of consciousness. It’s within, Working with Your mindset, the emotional healing, & the habits to sustain that healing.
That is what creates real results with energy work.
It is not a one-and-done microwave oven kind of situation and I think that’s where so many people want it to be. They want it to be the fancy quantum leap, and unfortunately, it’s not! Healing is a HABIT. It’s a perspective and Identity Shift that takes place in your body. You can experience a quantum leap with energy work. I’ve even experienced it myself. However sustainable healing in the Identity begins with really bringing in that self-awareness.
And It starts with doing energy work correctly.
If you’re having a hard time with energy work,
I highly recommend checking out The Ultimate Chakra Academy!
If you’re feeling: + I am stuck over-thinking, and constantly looping with an issue over and over. trapped in negative self-talk. + you’re having a hard time managing the ascension symptoms and not really knowing what to do about it. + You’re getting stuck feeling ‘projected on’ emotionally, or physically in your relationships. + You’re having a lot of hyper-empathy problems when you feel energetically and emotionally everywhere – maybe even attracting narassists LOOK –
there are 3 Days Left to Join the Academy, This work is made for the Spiritual Empath ready to work with the power of Energy Work via the charkas to truly help them Reconnect to Higher self, raise their vibration more naturally, open up to more receiving and spiritual alignment
by learning how to balance their chakras
But the real benefit? Is knowing what’s on the other side of Transformation!
It’s not about healing, it’s about who’s the person on the other side of that?
it’s about you gaining control of your thoughts and feeling more emotionally free than ever before! Does this person Reconnect to higher self and start attracting a better career? More Abundance? Better relationships? Remove TOXIC B.S. Focus on Their Self-Love? Internalize their Enoughness? Have an epic sex life? Speak their truth clearly and authentically? Receive easier by being more magnetic? The answer is up to you.
