Hubungan suami isteri dalam Al-Qur'an adalah هُنَّ لِبَاسٌ لَكُمْ وَأَنْتُمْ لِبَاسٌ لَهُنَّ "Mereka adalah pakaian bagimu dan kamu adalah pakaian bagi mereka." (QS al-Baqoroh : 187) Para ulama menerangkan bahwa pakaian itu berfungsi sebagai penutup (ستر) dimana suami isteri saling menutupi aib, kekurangan dan kelemahan satu dengan lainnya. Juga berfungsi untuk menunjukkan : ◾ intimasi (ملاصقة) Karena adanya persentuhan yang menunjukkan intimasi ◾ kedekatan (قرب) Karena pakaian adalah sesuatu yang paling dekat dengan tubuh ◾ kesenangan (متعة) Karena pakaian itu memberikan pengaruh yang menyenangkan, membahagiakan dan menghibur keindahan (تجميل) Karena pakaian itu menghias dan memperindah dan perlindungan (وقاء)... Karena pakaian itu melindungi dan menjaga dari panas, dingin, kotor, dll... Allâhu Akbar, begitu indahnya al-Qur'an menggambarkan hubungan ini... Karena itu jadikanlah pasanganmu seperti pakaian bagimu, yang kau berupaya menutupinya, melengkapinya, melindunginya, menghias dirinya, mendekati, menyentuh dan berintimasi dengannya... Maka dengannya kau akan mendapatkan TUJUAN dari pernikahan... Yaitu وَمِنْ اٰيٰتِهٖٓ اَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُمْ مِّنْ اَنْفُسِكُمْ اَزْوَاجًا لِّتَسْكُنُوْٓا اِلَيْهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَكُمْ مَّوَدَّةً وَّرَحْمَةً ۗاِنَّ فِيْ ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيٰتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَّتَفَكَّرُوْنَ "Dan di antara tanda-tanda (kebesaran)-Nya ialah Dia menciptakan pasangan-pasangan untukmu dari jenismu sendiri, AGAR KAMU CENDERUNG DAN MERASA TENTERAM KEPADANYA , dan Dia menjadikan di antaramu rasa kasih dan sayang. Sungguh, pada yang demikian itu benar-benar terdapat tanda-tanda (kebesaran Allah) bagi kaum yang berpikir."
