It's been long enough since I last drew ponies that I've actually forgotten how I went about drawing them. So I decided to do a style study, using Penny as my subject! Ref'd a bunch of different artists to get a sense of their style, to better rebuild my own!
The one closest to my historical style is the one taking cues from Amarynceus, who is a fantastic artist btw, check their work out. Strong jawline, boxy snout- that's the good stuff.
I remember in the past being worried about having a style to call my own so that my work could stand out and be unique. Nowadays, I've found that style is one of those things that you can tweak and change at any time, depending on the needs of the piece. Plus style is a lot more than just your proportions and rendering style- even things such as composition, pose choices, and color palettes play a part in defining a style.

This is super cool! This artist, called Amarynceus does these pieces depicting airships. There are cruisers, battleships, even merchantmen and liners! There is mention of different countries or nations in the lines on the bottom of some. I imagine he/she has created an entire world for these creations! And I really love how most of the pieces are views from far off, and some the ships may be obscured by fog or something. I ran across them on Reddit, in the "Imaginary Airship" and "Imaginary Vessels" subs. All told I gathered 34! Next post I'll show the civilian ships.

Then his allotted destiny bound fast Diores, son of Amarynceus. A jagged rock struck his right ankle, thrown by Piros, son of Imbrasus, who came from Aenus as the leader of the Thracians. The disrespectful stone crushed both his tendons and shattered both his legs. He fell down backward onto the dust and stretched his arms towards his friends as he was breathing out his life. Then Piros, who had struck him, ran up to him and speared him through the navel. His intestines poured out of him onto the earth and darkness covered his eyes. As Piros darted back, Aetolian Thoas struck him with his spear beside the nipple, through the chest -- the bronze punctured his lung. Then Thoas came in close and pulled the heavy spear out of his chest, and drew his sharp sword, and with that he sliced Piros right in the middle of his belly, and took his life -- but did not strip his armor, because his Thracian comrades stood around him grasping their long spears, with their hair piled high.

First coloring for the amazing @amarynceus! This would be a lovely Twilight just being the graceful jerk that she is :P. There’s no doubt that the large amount of Tuna going on right now on their blog inspiration from Silf’s @royalsketchbook, and I’m not going to complain. Amar has this style that tows the line between real horse anatomy and the more animated features that we’ve come to love in the facial expressions.
You’ll find plenty of ships and boats that soar and float over on their blog. I highly recommend you check them out. There’s a current storyline going on that contains a bit of Tuna. Don’t want to miss out.

Normally I would have shied away from this, but the flowing body and mane made me want to take up the challenge. The challenge being how heavily inked the mane is already. From my knowledge before taking this on, coloring something this dark is impossible without relining the entire thing, and I couldn’t simulate Amar’s lines even if I tried. What I ended up finding is a ‘Color’ blend for layers and some brushes seemed to have a more desirable effect without replacing the original line work. I had to apply this to the original layer (for which I made many duplicates) which meant less room for error.
To note, these are actually show accurate colors being used, just the blending did de-saturated them a bit. I am very satisfied on how it turned out. While I wasn’t able to replace the darker lines completely, I was able to put enough color on them to make a difference. Really highlights the flow that’s in the original sketch.
I started out using a pastel brush that seemed to be doing alright, but made things a bit too dark, and made coloring the hair looks way too messy. Ended up using a soft airbrush to make the colors come out the way I wanted. Redid the entire thing. I might still have an example of the pastel somewhere. Just ask and I’ll send it to you if I haven’t already. I also found myself thinking that if I were to personify an Airbrush, it would be Amar. He seems very airbrushy.
One problem that was pointed out to me was how bright the colors ended up being for the mane. You could hardly make out the pinker spectrum as it seemed like it was emitting it’s own light. Using Twi’s outline color on a lower layer darkened it just right.
I must have colored this thing a dozen times, really. It was a fun challenge. I’m happy Amar gave me the go ahead to color their sketches.. I hope to do more soon.
